• Deep-UV nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals of NaBe 2 BO 3 F 2 were successfully grown. • Calculated refractive indices suggest NaBe 2 BO 3 F 2 is a viable deep-UV NLO crystal. • The structure-property relationships are compared across the entire KBBF family. The deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal NaBe 2 BO 3 F 2 (NBBF) is grown by the spontaneous nucleation method with the dimensions up to 20 × 20 × 1.5 mm3. The crystal structure was determined using single-crystal x-ray diffraction analysis and its space group was defined as C2 , which belongs to the biaxial class. The optical properties including the transmittance and the NLO coefficients were first determined. The band structure and density of states of NBBF were also calculated. Based on the calculated refractive indices, the Sellmeier equations were fitted to evaluate its ability for deep-UV laser generation. Our results suggest that NBBF is a viable deep-UV NLO crystal. Metal sulfides with diamond-like (DL) structures are systematically investigated in this study for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral region. All the selected materials are characterized by a 3D framework connected by various sulfide tetrahedral units, such as [PS 4 ], [SiS 4 ], [GeS 4 ], [GaS 4 ], [InS 4 ], [CdS 4 ], [ZnS 4 ], [LiS 4 ], and [AgS 4 ]. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of these materials are analyzed on the basis of first-principles calculations. It is concluded that it is relatively easy to achieve good balance between the bandgap and the NLO effect. Additionally, moderate birefringence Δn (∼0.03–0.10) is required for practical mid-IR NLO applications. In particular, several metal sulfides with normal DL and defect DL structures, exhibiting superior mid-IR NLO properties, are highlighted. A new noncentrosymmetric borate, Na3Y3(BO3)4, was grown in the Na2O–B2O3–NaF flux system. Its open-framework structure features a large hexagonal tunnel (5.92 Å in diameter), which is extremely rare in borates. Two new quaternary selenides, namely Ba4Ga4SnSe12 and Ba6Ga2SnSe11, have been synthesized for the first time, representing the first two members in the A/M/Sn/Q (A = alkaline-earth metal; M = Al, Ga, In; Q = S, Se, Te) system. Ba4Ga4SnSe12 crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group P4̅21/c of the tetragonal system and has a three-dimensional structure. Its three-dimensional framework is built up from corner-sharing GaSe4 and SnSe4 tetrahedra with eight-coordinated Ba2+ cations residing in the cavities. Ba6Ga2SnSe11 crystallizes in a new structure type in the monoclinic centrosymmetric space group P21/c. The structure of Ba6Ga2SnSe11 features a zero-dimensional structure containing totally isolated distorted SnSe4 tetrahedra and a discrete Ga2Se7 unit with Ba2+ cations located between them. On the basis of the diffuse-reflectance spectra, the band gaps are 2.16 (2) eV and 1.99 (2) eV for Ba4Ga4SnSe12 and Ba6Ga2SnSe11 respectively. In addition, the electronic structure calculation of Ba4Ga4SnSe12 indicates that it is a direct-gap semiconductor with the band gap mainly determined by the [Ga4SnSe12]8− anionic framework. Transparent tourmaline NaAl 9 (BO 3) 3 Si 6 O 21 OH is first reported by combining experimental and theory calculation methods, which exhibits potential ultraviolet nonlinear optical properties. However, its nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were not explored so far, because a transparent crystal with high transmittance is scarce, being essential to optical functional materials. Here, we report a novel ultraviolet (UV) NLO tourmaline crystal with chemical composition NaAl 9 (BO 3) 3 Si 6 O 21 OH for the first time by combining first-principles analysis and experimental measurements. It exhibits a short UV absorption edge, considerable second harmonic generation effect and moderate birefringence, thereby facilitating its phase-matching coherent beam output in the range from visible to UV regions. We demonstrate enormously strongchiral effects from a photonicmetamaterial consisting of an array of dual-layer twisted-arcs witha total thickness of ∼λ/6. Experimental results reveala circular dichroism of ∼0.35 in the absolute value and a maximumpolarization rotation of ∼305°/λ in a near-infraredwavelength region. A transmission of greater than 50% is achievedat the frequency where the polarization rotation peaks. Retrievedparameters from measured quantities further indicate an actual opticalactivity of 76° per λ and a difference of 0.42 in the indicesof refraction for the two circularly polarized waves of opposite handedness. A new ternary phosphidopolysilicate (IV), KSi2P3, has been synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction. The compound crystallizes in a new structure type in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a=10.1327(5)Å, b=10.1382(5)Å, c=21.1181(10)Å, β=96.88(0)°, and Z=8. In the structure, all SiP4 tetrahedra are connected with each other by corner-sharing P atoms to form layers, which are stacked along c direction and separated by K+ cations. The two-dimensional structure of KSi2P3 contrasts with those of the two known members in the ternary A/Si/P (A=alkali metal) system, namely Na5SiP3 (zero-dimensional) and K2SiP2 (one-dimensional), which contains less amount of Si. With the development of laser technology and related scientific fields, understanding of the structure–property relationships in nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals is becoming more and more important. In this article, first-principles studies based on density functional theory, and their applications to elucidate the microscopic origins of the linear and NLO properties in NLO crystals, are reviewed. The ab initio approaches have the ability to accurately predict the optical properties in NLO crystals, and the developed analysis tools are vital to investigating their intrinsic mechanism. This microscopic understanding has further guided molecular engineering design for NLO crystals with novel structures and properties. It is anticipated that first-principle material approaches will greatly improve the search efficiency and greatly help experiments to save resources in the exploration of new NLO crystals with good performance. The new ternary sulfide Sn 2 SiS 4 has been synthesized via high-temperature solid state reaction. It crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P2 1 / c of the monoclinic system. In the structure, the Sn 2+ cations are coordinated to a heavily-distorted octahedron of six S atoms or a pentagonal pyramid of six S atoms, both geometries clearly demonstrating the effect of the stereo-chemically active electron lone pair on the Sn coordination environment. These SnS 6 polyhedra and the SiS 4 tetrahedra are connected to each other via corner and edge-sharing to generate a three-dimensional framework. Based on the diffuse reflectance measurement and the electronic structure calculation, Sn 2 SiS 4 has an indirect band gap of 2.00 eV. Interestingly, Sn 2 SiS 4 exhibits an efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity pertaining to Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation, which is superior to the important photocatalyst C 3 N 4 . The first two members in the quaternary A/A′/M/Q (A = alkali metal; A′ = alkaline-earth metal; M = As, Sb, Bi; Q = S, Se, Te) system, namely the KBaMSe 3 (M = As, Sb) selenides, have been synthesized by solid state reactions. They are isostructural and crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group P 2 1 / c of the monoclinic system. In the structure, the trivalent M atom (M = As, Sb) is coordinated to three Se atoms forming a trigonal pyramid with the Se atoms serving as the triangle base, showing the stereochemical activity of the ns 2 lone pair electron. The MSe 3 (M = As, Sb) trigonal pyramids are totally isolated from each other with K + and Ba 2+ cations located between them. The optical band gaps of 2.26 (2) eV for KBaAsSe 3 and 2.04 (2) eV for KBaSbSe 3 , were deduced from the diffuse reflectance spectra. The first principles calculations were performed to study the electronic structures of KBaMSe 3 (M = As, Sb) compounds and the results indicated that these two compounds are indirect band gap semiconductors.
