A microgrid (MG) is always prone to the uncertainties of its demand variation and the generation of its non-dispatchable renewable sources when operating in islanded mode. Such variation events can lead to the voltage or frequency (VF) violation in the MG. However, there are some techniques available in the literature that can predict these events a few minutes ahead. Using such techniques, the VF violation can also be predicted and prevented with the introduction of a suitable preventive controller. Hence, this paper proposes a look-ahead controller that uses the short-horizon prediction data of demand and renewable generation to determine any prospective VF violation. If a violation is predicted, the proposed technique will aim to define the most optimal generation level of dispatchable sources, the MG's best network configuration and the engagement level of the supportive actions, such as exchanging power with neighboring microgrids, utilizing energy storages, a demand response and renewable energy curtailment (if and when available). The technical, reliability and environmental aspects of the MG are considered within the proposed technique along with the operational cost. The determined optimal control variables are then sent to the local controllers to apply the proper arrangements in the system to retain the VF within the desired range. To address the challenges of integrating ever-increasing renewable energy generation such as wind power and photovoltaic (PV) to the power system concerned, the wind-PV-thermal-bundled (WPTB) transmission mode could be employed to mitigate the intermittent power output from wind and PV units. In this work, based on the mathematical models of thermal generation units, wind turbines and PV units, the WPTB transmission system model is developed. Each load demand is modeled as a random variable under various operating conditions of the concerned power system. The Lyapunov linearization method is used to obtain the system matrix of each operation mode, and then all eigenvalues of the system can be attained. According to the generator participation factor, the oscillation modes of the power system are classified. The eigenvalue and damping ratio of each oscillation mode are employed to formulate the objective function of the optimal strategy for enhancing probabilistic small-signal stability, and the particle swarm optimization algorithm is used for global optimization. The secure operation of the power system can be ensured in a wider range by the designed optimization strategy in this work. With the target of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, renewable energy generation (REG) develops rapidly. The increasing penetration of REG brings along the problems of fluctuation in power flow and the possible abandonment of wind and photovoltaics (PV) generation. In this context, the so-called integrated energy system (IES) becomes a promising solution to the accommodation of REG thanks to energy storage systems and coupling devices inside. In this paper, the optimal operation model of an IES is first presented, with the schemes of green certificate trading and carbon emission right trading included to provide economic incentives for accommodating REG. Next, in order to address the problem of uncertainty in REG, the devices in the IES are divided into three types based on regulation flexibility, and a multi-time period optimal dispatching scheme is proposed, including day-ahead optimal scheduling, rolling optimal dispatching, and real-time control strategy. Finally, it is demonstrated by simulation results of a numerical example that the proposed method not only promotes the accommodation capability for REG but can also cope well with contingencies. Bidirectional power flow is becoming increasingly commonplace in modern distribution systems with the integration Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) and Energy Storage Systems (ESSs). This has facilitated in bringing generation closer to end‐consumers, thus leading to the emergence and rapid growth of microgrids. Additionally, due to the technological revolution in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), innovative business models have developed where willing and able participants of the power system can participate in the electricity market. In line with this evolution of both the electric power system and its participants, Energy‐as‐a‐Service (EaaS) is emerging as an increasingly prominent business model to address electrical grid challenges economically. EaaS encourages electricity grid customers to play a more active role and participate in different electricity markets. This paper introduces and simulates a variant of a Transactive Energy (TE) trading algorithm for microgrids. The paper describes the model in brief how multiple microgrids assets can trade electricity to ensure more efficient and economical local resource utilization. The main motivations of this research paper is to validate and test the suitability of the TE trading algorithm for a variety of conditions. With the proliferation of natural gas combined cycle units, the modern energy infrastructure has evolved into a coupled electricity and natural gas system, which often encompasses multiple large-scale and geographically-diverse energy areas. The similarity in electricity and natural gas consumption profiles in coupled systems gives rise to critical mandates for the coordinated optimization of electricity and natural gas operation. This paper presents a decentralized optimization framework, which considers wind energy and power-to-gas (P2G) technologies in the operation of integrated multi-area electricity and natural gas transmission system (IEGTS). First, a comprehensive optimal dispatch model is established for the multi-area IEGTS in a centralized manner where bi-directional flows of electricity and natural gas among multi-areas are optimized considering the stochastic nature of wind energy. In particular, a linearized transient-state gas flow model under mild assumptions is proposed to represent the dynamic characteristics of the natural gas sector. The centralized optimization problem is decomposed into a set of computationally-tractable subproblems that are solved independently in individual areas. The alternating direction multiplier method is employed to achieve a rapidly convergent solution while preserving the privacy of operation data shared among participating areas. Finally, case studies are carried out on two multi-area IEGTS with multiple wind generation scenarios which demonstrate the computational performance of the proposed method with P2G facilities operating in variable conditions. This paper focuses on transactive energy management in local energy communities and proposes a coalitional game model which considers the presence and utilization of flexible loads and the power output uncertainties from renewable energy sources. The superadditivity and balancedness of the proposed game model are proved rigorously by demonstrating that a nucleolus-based solution leads to a stable and fair payoff distribution scheme for all players. More specifically, the objective function is proved concave with its analytical expression, derived through an approximated piecewise linear function. The proposed allocation of realized payoffs is then proved to converge consistently to a nucleolus-based solution. It is demonstrated by numerical simulations that the grand coalition effectively increases the global payoff and the proposed allocation scheme contributes to peak shaving and valley filling in the overall load profile. A key feature of electricity generation in a distribution network is manifested by renewable generation with zero marginal cost. Existing market mechanisms are likely to fail in supporting such decentralized transactions while providing a reasonable price signal to compensate for the investment cost of renewable generators. Given this background, this paper first describes an average pricing market (APM) mechanism for pricing zero marginal cost renewable generation outputs in the distribution network. Then, a decentralized formulation of the APM mechanism is derived using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Convergence of the decentralized mechanism can be guaranteed under some mild conditions for parameter setting. Finally, case studies are carried out to demonstrate the presented market mechanism. Simulation results show that the problem of always bidding a zero price by renewable generators in some existing markets can be avoided. The presented method also provides a solution for organizing decentralized electricity transactions in the distribution network and can converge to similar results with those obtained by the centralized one, with a relative error less than 5%. A key feature of an electricity distribution market is that it may be dominated by renewable generation with zero marginal cost. Existing market mechanisms are likely to fail in this context since it cannot generate a reasonable price signal to compensate for the investment cost of renewable generators. Given this background, a double-sided auction market mechanism is presented for pricing the zero marginal cost renewable generation in the distribution system. Honesty is proved to be a dominant strategy for participants, which would enable the proposed mechanism to develop into a set-and-forget bidding market. The proposed market mechanism is also shown to be compatible with the nodal pricing system. Finally, case studies are carried out, and the results show that under the proposed market mechanism, the problem of always bidding a zero price by renewable generators in some existing markets can be avoided. Even when only renewable generation units with zero marginal costs participate in the bidding, the proposed mechanism can still produce a reasonable market clearing price. When adopting the average pricing market mechanism, merits of nodal pricing can still be retained and contribute to the enhancement of the operating efficiency of the distribution network. The global resurgence of hydrogen as a clean energy source, particularly green hydrogen derived from renewable energy, is pivotal for achieving a carbon-neutral future. However, scalability poses a significant challenge. This research proposes innovative business models leveraging the low-emission property of green hydrogen to reduce its financial costs, thereby fostering its widespread adoption. Key components of the business workflow are elaborated, mathematical formulations of market parameters are derived, and case studies are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of these models. Results demonstrate that the substantial costs associated with the current hydrogen industry can be effectively subsidized via the implementation of proposed business models. When the carbon emission price falls within the range of approximately 86–105 USD/ton, free access to hydrogen becomes a viable option for end-users. With the ever-increasing penetration level of renewable generation sources, a modern power system is facing more inevitable uncertainties that could lead to weakly damped oscillations. Detecting coherency among synchronous generators is one of the key steps of situational awareness for a given power system with a very high level of renewable penetration. In this paper, a wide-area measurement system (WAMS) based coherency detection algorithm employing the kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and clustering analysis based on affinity propagation (AP) is proposed for a power system with extensive penetration of renewable generation sources. First, several trajectory similarity indexes are presented for determining the similarity between the trajectories of any two generators in the center of inertia coordinate. Second, a KPCA-based method is presented to integrate the trajectory similarity indexes for addressing the correlations among multiple indexes. Next, the AP-based clustering analysis method is utilized to detect the coherency among synchronous generators without the need of prespecifying the number of clusters. Finally, Southern China power system and a part of northern China power system with Zhangbei wind farms included, both with very high levels of renewable generation penetration, are utilized to demonstrate the proposed WAMS-based coherency detection methodology, and the application to actual Guangdong power system in south China to verify the applicability and practicality. Identification of coherent generators (CGs) in power systems is one of the key steps in determining controlled islanding strategies. In this study, a wide‐area measurement system (WAMS) and agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) algorithm based coherency identification method is presented for interconnected power systems with aggregated renewable sources. First, the trajectories measured by WAMS are transformed to the centre of inertia based ones for better representing the dynamic behaviour of a given power system, and ten trajectory dissimilarity indexes are presented for determining the similarity of the trajectories of any two generators. Second, a CRITIC (CRiteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation) based method, in which entropy and the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient are integrated for reflecting the differences and correlations among multiple indexes, respectively, is presented to integrate the trajectory dissimilarity indexes. Next, the AHC algorithm is utilised to identify CGs. Finally, a modified New England–New York interconnected power system with a large number of renewables, a simplified actual Western Interconnection power system in North America and the eastern part of Guangdong power system in China with a recorded oscillation event happened are utilised to demonstrate the proposed wide‐area coherency identification methodology. SUMMARY With the advent of large-scale wind farms and their integration into electrical grids, more uncertainties, constraints and objectives must be considered in power system development. It is therefore necessary to introduce risk-control strategies into the planning of transmission systems connected with wind power generators. This paper presents a probability-based multi-objective model equipped with three risk-control strategies. The model is developed to evaluate and enhance the ability of the transmission system to protect against overload risks when wind power is integrated into the power system. The model involves: (i) defining the uncertainties associated with wind power generators with probability measures and calculating the probabilistic power flow with the combined use of cumulants and Gram-Charlier series; (ii) developing three risk-control strategies by specifying the smallest acceptable non-overload probability for each branch and the whole system, and specifying the non-overload margin for all branches in the whole system; (iii) formulating an overload risk index based on the non-overload probability and the non-overload margin defined; and (iv) developing a multi-objective transmission system expansion planning (TSEP) model with the objective functions composed of transmission investment and the overload risk index. The presented work represents a superior risk-control model for TSEP in terms of security, reliability and economy. The transmission expansion planning model with the three risk-control strategies demonstrates its feasibility in the case study using two typical power systems. The integration of numerous intermittent renewable energy sources (IRESs) poses challenges to the power supply-demand balance due to the inherent intermittent and uncertain power outputs of IRESs, which requires higher operational flexibility of the power system. The deployment of flexible ramping products (FRPs) provides a new alternative to accommodate the high penetration of IRESs. Given this background, a bi-level risk-limiting real-time unit commitment/real-time economic dispatch model considering FRPs provided by different flexibility resources is proposed. In the proposed model, the objective is to maximize the social surplus while minimizing the operational risk, quantified using the concept of conditional value-at-risk (CVaR). Energy and ramping capabilities of conventional generating units during the start-up or shut-down processes are considered, while meeting the constraints including unit start-up/shut-down trajectories and ramping up/down rates in consecutive time periods. The Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) optimality conditions are then used to convert the bi-level programming problem into a single-level one, which can be directly solved after linearization. The modified IEEE 14-bus power system is employed to demonstrate the proposed method, and the role of FRPs in enhancing the system flexibility and improving the accommodation capability for IRESs is illustrated in some operation scenarios of the sample system. The impact of the confidence level in CVaR on the system operational flexibility is also investigated through case studies.
