In modern manufacturing and service industries, urgent orders and service tasks are common, and the speed of handling such urgent tasks is an important indicator of production and service efficiency. In this study, we consider scheduling jobs on two parallel machines with the random arrival of an emergency job. The objective is to minimise the makespan, subject to a given maximum waiting time of the emergency job. We first show that the worst-case ratio of the existing algorithm LPT $ _l $ l -SPT $ _{m-l} $ m − l is at least 3/2 when m = 2. We then analyse some properties of the optimal schedule and derive lower bounds on the optimal makespan. Finally, we present an improved approximation algorithm with a tight worst-case ratio of 4/3. We establish a list of characterizations of bounded twin-width for hereditary classes of totally ordered graphs: as classes of at most exponential growth studied in enumerative combinatorics, as monadically NIP classes studied in model theory, as classes that do not transduce the class of all graphs studied in finite model theory, and as classes for which model checking first-order logic is fixed-parameter tractable studied in algorithmic graph theory. This has several consequences. First, it allows us to show that every hereditary class of ordered graphs either has at most exponential growth, or has at least factorial growth. This settles a question first asked by Balogh et al. [5] on the growth of hereditary classes of ordered graphs, generalizing the Stanley-Wilf conjecture/Marcus-Tardos theorem. Second, it gives a fixed-parameter approximation algorithm for twin-width on ordered graphs. Third, it yields a full classification of fixed-parameter tractable first-order model checking on hereditary classes of ordered binary structures. Drones are increasingly used for last-mile delivery due to their speed and cost-effectiveness. This study focuses on a novel locker-drone delivery system, where trucks transport parcels from the warehouse to lockers, and drones complete the final delivery. This system is ideal for community and intra-facility logistics. The research optimises the network design by determining the location of lockers, the number of drones at each locker, and the assignment of demands to lockers, minimising operating costs. Both single-parcel and multi-parcel capacity drones are examined. We build an optimisation model for each system, considering drone service capacity as a critical constraint. We design an algorithm combining average sample approximation and a genetic algorithm to address demand uncertainty. The algorithm's efficiency is validated through comparative analysis with Gurobi. Numerical experiments, using real and generated data, optimise the network design. Results show that the multi-capacity drone system requires fewer lockers and drones than the singlecapacity system. Although the single-capacity system yields lower drone delivery costs, it incurs higher truck delivery costs. Additionally, a comprehensive cost analysis compares the cost-efficiency of the locker-drone system with a conventional drone delivery system, revealing the cost-saving advantage of the locker-drone system. A constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), \(\textsf {Max-CSP}(\mathcal {F})\) , is specified by a finite set of constraints \(\mathcal {F}\subseteq \lbrace [q]^k \rightarrow \lbrace 0,1\rbrace \rbrace\) for positive integers q and k. An instance of the problem on n variables is given by m applications of constraints from \(\mathcal {F}\) to subsequences of the n variables, and the goal is to find an assignment to the variables that satisfies the maximum number of constraints. In the (γ ,β)-approximation version of the problem for parameters 0 ≤ β ≤ γ ≤ 1, the goal is to distinguish instances where at least γ fraction of the constraints can be satisfied from instances where at most β fraction of the constraints can be satisfied. In this work, we consider the approximability of this problem in the context of sketching algorithms and give a dichotomy result. Specifically, for every family \(\mathcal {F}\) and every β < γ, we show that either a linear sketching algorithm solves the problem in polylogarithmic space or the problem is not solvable by any sketching algorithm in \(o(\sqrt {n})\) space. In particular, we give non-trivial approximation algorithms using polylogarithmic space for infinitely many constraint satisfaction problems. We also extend previously known lower bounds for general streaming algorithms to a wide variety of problems, and in particular the case of q=k=2, where we get a dichotomy, and the case when the satisfying assignments of the constraints of \(\mathcal {F}\) support a distribution on \([q]^k\) with uniform marginals. Prior to this work, other than sporadic examples, the only systematic classes of CSPs that were analyzed considered the setting of Boolean variables q = 2, binary constraints k =2, and singleton families \(|\mathcal {F}|=1\) and only considered the setting where constraints are placed on literals rather than variables. Our positive results show wide applicability of bias-based algorithms used previously by [47] and [41], which we extend to include richer norm estimation algorithms, by giving a systematic way to discover biases. Our negative results combine the Fourier analytic methods of [56], which we extend to a wider class of CSPs, with a rich collection of reductions among communication complexity problems that lie at the heart of the negative results. In particular, previous works used Fourier analysis over the Boolean cube to initiate their results and the results seemed particularly tailored to functions on Boolean literals (i.e., with negations). We consider the numerical taxonomy problem of fitting a positive distance function \({\mathcal {D}:{S\choose 2}\rightarrow \mathbb {R}_{\gt 0}}\) by a tree metric. We want a tree T with positive edge weights and including S among the vertices so that their distances in T match those in \(\mathcal {D}\). A nice application is in evolutionary biology where the tree T aims to approximate thebranching process leading to the observed distances in \(\mathcal {D}\) [Cavalli-Sforza and Edwards 1967]. We consider the total error, that is, the sum of distance errors over all pairs of points. We present a deterministic polynomial time algorithm minimizing the total error within a constant factor. We can do this both for general trees and for the special case of ultrametrics with a root having the same distance to all vertices in S. The problems are APX-hard, so a constant factor is the best we can hope for in polynomial time. The best previous approximation factor was O((log n)(log log n)) by Ailon and Charikar [2005], who wrote "determining whether an O(1) approximation can be obtained is a fascinating question." We identify a sufficient condition, treewidth-pliability, that gives a polynomial-time algorithm for an arbitrarily good approximation of the optimal value in a large class of Max-2-CSPs parameterised by the class of allowed constraint graphs (with arbitrary constraints on an unbounded alphabet). Our result applies more generally to the maximum homomorphism problem between two rational-valued structures. The condition unifies the two main approaches for designing a polynomial-time approximation scheme. One is Baker's layering technique, which applies to sparse graphs such as planar or excluded-minor graphs. The other is based on Szemerédi's regularity lemma and applies to dense graphs. We extend the applicability of both techniques to new classes of Max-CSPs. However, we prove that the condition cannot be used to find solutions (as opposed to approximating the optimal value) in general. Treewidth-pliability turns out to be a robust notion that can be defined in several equivalent ways, including characterisations via size, treedepth, or the Hadwiger number. We show connections to the notions of fractional-treewidth-fragility from structural graph theory, hyperfiniteness from the area of property testing, and regularity partitions from the theory of dense graph limits. These may be of independent interest. In particular, we show that a monotone class of graphs is hyperfinite if and only if it is fractionally-treewidth-fragile and has bounded degree. The article focuses on studying randomized greedy matching algorithms, particularly the Modified Randomized Greedy (MRG) algorithm and its weaker version named Random Decision Order (RDO). It mentions the RDO algorithm is shown to provide a 0.639-approximation for bipartite graphs and a 0.531-approximation for general graphs, leading to a substantial improvement in the approximation ratio of MRG.

The study of approximate matching in the Massively Parallel Computations (MPC) model has recently seen a burst of breakthroughs. Despite this progress, we still have a limited understanding of maximal matching which is one of the central problems of parallel and distributed computing. All known MPC algorithms for maximalmatching either take polylogarithmic time which is considered inefficient, or require a strictly superlinear space of n1+Ω(1) per machine. In this work, we close this gap by providing a novel analysis of an extremely simple algorithm, which is a variant of an algorithm conjectured to work by Czumaj, Lacki, Madry, Mitrovic, Onak, and Sankowski [15]. The algorithm edge-samples the graph, randomly partitions the vertices, and finds a random greedy maximal matching within each partition.We show that this algorithm drastically reduces the vertex degrees. This, among other results, leads to an O(log log Δ) round algorithm for maximal matching with O(n) space (or even mildly sublinear in n using standard techniques). As an immediate corollary, we get a 2 approximate minimum vertex cover in essentially the same rounds and space, which is the optimal approximation factor under standard assumptions. We also get an improved O(log log Δ) round algorithm for 1 + ε approximate matching. All these results can also be implemented in the congested clique model in the same number of rounds. Estimating ranks, quantiles, and distributions over streaming data is a central task in data analysis and monitoring. Given a stream of n items from a data universe equipped with a total order, the task is to compute a sketch (data structure) of size polylogarithmic in n. Given the sketch and a query item y, one should be able to approximate its rank in the stream, i.e., the number of stream elements smaller than or equal to y. Most works to date focused on additive εn error approximation, culminating in the KLL sketch that achieved optimal asymptotic behavior. This article investigates multiplicative (1±ε )-error approximations to the rank. Practical motivation for multiplicative error stems from demands to understand the tails of distributions, and hence for sketches to be more accurate near extreme values. The most space-efficient algorithms due to prior work store either O(log(ε²n)/ε²) or O(log³ (εn)/ε ) universe items. We present a randomized sketch storing O(log1.5 (εn)/ε ) items that can (1 ± ε )-approximate the rank of each universe item with high constant probability; this space bound is within an O(√log(εn)) factor of optimal. We consider the classical problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function subject to a cardinality constraint, which, due to its numerous applications, has recently been studied in various computational models. We consider a clean multiplayer model that lies between the offline and streaming model, and study it under the aspect of one-way communication complexity. Our model captures the streaming setting (by considering a large number of players), and, in addition, two-player approximation results for it translate into the robust setting. We present tight one-way communication complexity results for our model, which, due to the connections mentioned previously, have multiple implications in the data stream and robust setting. Even for just two players, a prior information-theoretic hardness result implies that no approximation factor above 1/2 can be achieved in our model, if only queries to feasible sets (i.e., sets respecting the cardinality constraint) are allowed. We show that the possibility of querying infeasible sets can actually be exploited to beat this bound, by presenting a tight 2/3-approximation taking exponential time, and an efficient 0.514-approximation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example where querying a submodular function on infeasible sets leads to provably better results. Through the link to the (non-streaming) robust setting mentioned previously, both of these algorithms improve on the current state of the art for robust submodular maximization, showing that approximation factors beyond 1/2 are possible. Moreover, exploiting the link of our model to streaming, we settle the approximability for streaming algorithms by presenting a tight 1/2 + e hardness result, based on the construction of a new family of coverage functions. We study the computational complexity of (deterministic or randomized) algorithms based on point samples for approximating or integrating functions that can be well approximated by neural networks. Such algorithms (most prominently stochastic gradient descent and its variants) are used extensively in the field of deep learning. One of the most important problems in this field concerns the question of whether it is possible to realize theoretically provable neural network approximation rates by such algorithms. We answer this question in the negative by proving hardness results for the problems of approximation and integration on a novel class of neural network approximation spaces. In particular, our results confirm a conjectured and empirically observed theory-to-practice gap in deep learning. Reoptimization is a setting in which we are given a good approximate solution of an optimization problem instance and a local modification that slightly changes the instance. The main goal is that of finding a good approximate solution of the modified instance. We investigate one of the most studied scenarios in reoptimization known as Steiner tree reoptimization. Steiner tree reoptimization is a collection of strongly NP -hard optimization problems that are defined on top of the classical Steiner tree problem and for which several constant-factor approximation algorithms have been designed in the last decades. In this paper we improve upon all these results by developing a novel technique that allows us to design polynomial-time approximation schemes. Remarkably, prior to this paper, no approximation algorithm better than recomputing a solution from scratch was known for the elusive scenario in which the cost of a single edge decreases. Given a graph, the general problem to cover the maximum number of vertices by a collection of vertex-disjoint long paths seems to escape from the literature. A path containing at least k vertices is considered long. When k ≤ 3 , the problem is polynomial time solvable; when k is the total number of vertices, the problem reduces to the Hamiltonian path problem, which is NP-complete. For a fixed k ≥ 4 , the problem is NP-hard and the best known approximation algorithm for the weighted set packing problem implies a k-approximation algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, there is no approximation algorithm directly designed for the general problem; when k = 4 , the problem admits a 4-approximation algorithm which was presented recently. We propose the first (0.4394 k + O (1)) -approximation algorithm for the general problem and an improved 2-approximation algorithm when k = 4 . Both algorithms are based on local improvement, and their theoretical performance analyses are done via amortization and their practical performance is examined through simulation studies. Parameterization above (or below) a guarantee is a successful concept in parameterized algorithms. The idea is that many computational problems admit "natural" guarantees bringing to algorithmic questions whether a better solution (above the guarantee) could be obtained efficiently. For example, for every boolean CNF formula on m clauses, there is an assignment that satisfies at least m/2 clauses. How difficult is it to decide whether there is an assignment satisfying more than m / 2 + k clauses? Or, if an n-vertex graph has a perfect matching, then its vertex cover is at least n/2. Is there a vertex cover of size at least n / 2 + k for some k ≥ 1 and how difficult is it to find such a vertex cover? The above guarantee paradigm has led to several exciting discoveries in the areas of parameterized algorithms and kernelization. We argue that this paradigm could bring forth fresh perspectives on well-studied problems in approximation algorithms. Our example is the longest cycle problem. One of the oldest results in extremal combinatorics is the celebrated Dirac's theorem from 1952. Dirac's theorem provides the following guarantee on the length of the longest cycle: for every 2-connected n-vertex graph G with minimum degree δ (G) ≤ n / 2 , the length of a longest cycle L is at least 2 δ (G) . Thus the "essential" part in finding the longest cycle is in approximating the "offset" k = L - 2 δ (G) . The main result of this paper is the above-guarantee approximation theorem for k. Informally, the theorem says that approximating the offset k is not harder than approximating the total length L of a cycle. In other words, for any (reasonably well-behaved) function f, a polynomial time algorithm constructing a cycle of length f(L) in an undirected graph with a cycle of length L, yields a polynomial time algorithm constructing a cycle of length 2 δ (G) + Ω (f (k)) . k-center is one of the most popular clustering models. While it admits a simple 2-approximation in polynomial time in general metrics, the Euclidean version is NP-hard to approximate within a factor of 1.82, even in the plane, if one insists the dependence on k in the running time be polynomial. Without this restriction, a classic algorithm by Agarwal and Procopiuc [Algorithmica 2002] yields an O (n log k) + (1 / ϵ) O (2 d k 1 - 1 / d log k) -time (1 + ϵ) -approximation for Euclidean k-center, where d is the dimension. We show for a closely related problem, k-supplier, the double-exponential dependence on dimension is unavoidable if one hopes to have a sub-linear dependence on k in the exponent. We also derive similar algorithmic results to the ones by Agarwal and Procopiuc for both k-center and k-supplier. We use a relatively new tool, called Voronoi separator, which makes our algorithms and analyses substantially simpler. Furthermore we consider a well-studied generalization of k-center, called Non-uniform k-center (NUkC), where we allow different radii clusters. NUkC is NP-hard to approximate within any factor, even in the Euclidean case. We design a 2 O (k log k) n 2 time 3-approximation for NUkC in general metrics, and a 2 O ((k log k) / ϵ) d n time (1 + ϵ) -approximation for Euclidean NUkC. We address long-standing open questions raised by Williamson, Goemans, Vazirani and Mihail pertaining to the design of approximation algorithms for problems in network design via the primal-dual method (Williamson et al. in Combinatorica 15(3):435–454, 1995. https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01299747). Williamson et al. prove an approximation ratio of two for connectivity augmentation problems where the connectivity requirements can be specified by uncrossable functions. They state: "Extending our algorithm to handle non-uncrossable functions remains a challenging open problem. The key feature of uncrossable functions is that there exists an optimal dual solution which is laminar... A larger open issue is to explore further the power of the primal-dual approach for obtaining approximation algorithms for other combinatorial optimization problems." Our main result proves that the primal-dual algorithm of Williamson et al. achieves an approximation ratio of 16 for a class of functions that generalizes the notion of an uncrossable function. There exist instances that can be handled by our methods where none of the optimal dual solutions has a laminar support. We present three applications of our main result to problems in the area of network design. (1) A 16 -approximation algorithm for augmenting a family of small cuts of a graph G. The previous best approximation ratio was O (log | V (G) |) . Summary: Large‐scale linear time‐invariant (LTI) dynamical systems are widely used to characterize complicated physical phenomena. Glover developed the Hankel norm approximation (HNA) algorithm for optimally reducing the system in the Hankel norm, and we study its numerical issues. We provide a remedy for the numerical instabilities of Glover's HNA algorithm caused by clustered singular values. We analyze the effect of our modification on the degree and the Hankel error of the reduced system. Moreover, we propose a two‐stage framework to reduce the order of a large‐scale LTI system given samples of its transfer function for a target degree k$$ k $$ of the reduced system. It combines the adaptive Antoulas–Anderson (AAA) algorithm, modified to produce an intermediate LTI system in a numerically stable way, and the modified HNA algorithm. A carefully computed rational approximation of an adaptively chosen degree d$$ d $$ gives us an algorithm for reducing an LTI system, which achieves a balance between speed and accuracy. Confidence bands are used to estimate the likely range of the true parameter, whereas prediction bands provide an idea of the possible values of the parameter after applying a regression model. This study proposes an equation to construct confidence and prediction bands applicable to any linear or nonlinear chemometric regression model; that is, statistical methods used in analytical chemistry to establish relationships between two or more variables. The proposed equation is developed and presented as a useful tool to represent the uncertainty in estimates based on a set of data in chemical measurements. Once the set of data is adjusted as a regression model (linear, polynomial, or multivariable), the proposed equation can be used to construct confidence and prediction bands based on the adjustment equation. The proposed equation operates if the adjustment equation is continuous and derivable. The plot bands on any regression model provide a solid understanding of uncertainty assessment and have the advantage of total control and independence of algorithms and numeral approximations. Motivated by applications in the gig economy, we study approximation algorithms for a sequential pricing problem. The input is a bipartite graph G=(I,J,E) between individuals I and jobs J. The platform has a value of vj for matching job j to an individual worker. In order to find a matching, the platform can consider the edges (ij)∈E in any order and make a one-time take-it-or-leave-it offer of a price πij=w of its choosing to i for completing j. The worker accepts the offer with a known probability pijw; in this case, the job and the worker are irrevocably matched. What is the best way to make offers to maximize revenue and/or social welfare? The optimal algorithm is known to be NP-hard to compute (even if there is only a single job). With this in mind, we design efficient approximations to the optimal policy via a new random-order online contention resolution scheme (RO-OCRS) for matching. Our main result is a 0.456-balanced RO-OCRS in bipartite graphs and a 0.45-balanced RO-OCRS in general graphs. These algorithms improve on the recent bound of 12(1−e−2)≈0.432 and improve on the best-known lower bounds for the correlation gap of matching, despite applying to a significantly more restrictive setting. As a consequence of our online contention resolution scheme results, we obtain a 0.456-approximate algorithm for the sequential pricing problem. We further extend our results to settings where workers can only be contacted a limited number of times and show how to achieve improved results for this problem via improved algorithms for the well-studied stochastic probing problem. Minimizing the weighted completion time of jobs in the unrelated parallel machines model is a fundamental scheduling problem. The first (3 / 2 - c) –approximation algorithm for this problem, for some constant c > 0 , was obtained in the work of Bansal et al. (SIAM J Comput, 2021). A key ingredient in this work was the first dependent-rounding algorithm with a certain guaranteed amount of negative correlation. We improve upon this guaranteed amount from 1/108 to 1/27, thus also improving upon the constant c in the algorithms of Bansal et al. and Li (SIAM J Comput, 2020) for weighted completion time. The Probabilistic p-Center problem under Pressure (Min PpCP) is a variant of the usual Minp-Center problem we recently introduced in the context of wildfire management. The problem is to locate p shelters minimizing the maximum distance people will have to cover in case of fire in order to reach the closest accessible shelter. The landscape is divided into zones and is modeled as an edge-weighted graph with vertices corresponding to zones and edges corresponding to direct connections between two adjacent zones. The risk associated with fire outbreaks is modeled using a finite set of fire scenarios. Each scenario corresponds to a fire outbreak on a single zone (i.e., on a vertex) with the main consequence of modifying evacuation paths in two ways. First, an evacuation path cannot pass through the vertex on fire. Second, the fact that someone close to the fire may not take rational decisions when selecting a direction to escape is modeled using new kinds of evacuation paths. In this paper, we characterize the set of feasible solutions of Min PpCP-instance. Then, we propose some approximation results for Min PpCP. We generalize the celebrated isoperimetric inequality of Khot, Minzer, and Safra (SICOMP 2018) for Boolean functions to the case of real‐valued functions f:{0,1}d→ℝ$$ f:{\left\{0,1\right\}}^d\to \mathbb{R} $$. Our main tool in the proof of the generalized inequality is a new Boolean decomposition that represents every real‐valued function f$$ f $$ over an arbitrary partially ordered domain as a collection of Boolean functions over the same domain, roughly capturing the distance of f$$ f $$ to monotonicity and the structure of violations of f$$ f $$ to monotonicity. We apply our generalized isoperimetric inequality to improve algorithms for testing monotonicity and approximating the distance to monotonicity for real‐valued functions. Our tester for monotonicity has query complexity O˜(min(rd,d))$$ \tilde{O}\left(\min \left(r\sqrt{d},d\right)\right) $$, where r$$ r $$ is the size of the image of the input function. In topology optimization of transient problems, memory requirements and computational costs often become prohibitively large due to the backward‐in‐time adjoint equations. Common approaches such as the Checkpointing (CP) and Local‐in‐Time (LT) algorithms reduce memory requirements by dividing the temporal domain into intervals and by computing sensitivities on one interval at a time. The CP algorithm reduces memory by recomputing state solutions instead of storing them. This leads to a significant increase in computational cost. The LT algorithm introduces approximations in the adjoint solution to reduce memory requirements and leads to a minimal increase in computational effort. However, we show that convergence can be hampered using the LT algorithm due to errors in approximate adjoints. To reduce memory and/or computational time, we present two novel algorithms. The hybrid Checkpointing/Local‐in‐Time (CP/LT) algorithm improves the convergence behavior of the LT algorithm at the cost of an increased computational time but remains more efficient than the CP algorithm. The Parallel‐Local‐in‐Time (PLT) algorithm reduces the computational time through a temporal parallelization in which state and adjoint equations are solved simultaneously on multiple intervals. State and adjoint fields converge concurrently with the design. The effectiveness of each approach is illustrated with two‐dimensional density‐based topology optimization problems involving transient thermal or flow physics. Compared to the other discussed algorithms, we found a significant decrease in computational time for the PLT algorithm. Moreover, we show that under certain conditions, due to the use of approximations in the LT and PLT algorithms, they exhibit a bias toward designs with short characteristic times. Finally, based on the required memory reduction, computational cost, and convergence behavior of optimization problems, guidelines are provided for selecting the appropriate algorithms. Reactive silica materials like vitreous silica or cristobalite were dissolved at temperatures between 100 and 220 °C for up to 7 days in NaOH lyes. The liquid and solid reaction products were analyzed chemically. Sodium water glasses with silica concentrations of up to 27 wt % and molar SiO2/Na2O ratios of up to 3.7 were obtained. The experimental data were evaluated by an approximation algorithm. Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) have made great success in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era due to their relative resilience to noise and high flexibility relative to quantum resources. Quantum Architecture Search (QAS) aims to enhance the performance of VQAs by refining the structure of the adopted Parameterized Quantum Circuit (PQC). QAS is garnering increased attention owing to its automation, reduced reliance on expert experience, and its ability to achieve better performance while requiring fewer quantum gates than manually designed circuits. However, existing QAS algorithms optimize the structure from scratch for each VQA without using any prior experience, rendering the process inefficient and time-consuming. Moreover, determining the number of quantum gates, a crucial hyper-parameter in these algorithms is a challenging and time-consuming task. To mitigate these challenges, we accelerate the QAS algorithm via a meta-trained generator. The proposed algorithm directly generates high-performance circuits for a new VQA by utilizing a meta-trained Variational AutoEncoder (VAE). The number of quantum gates required in the designed circuit is automatically determined based on meta-knowledge learned from a variety of training tasks. Furthermore, we have developed a meta-predictor to filter out circuits with suboptimal performance, thereby accelerating the algorithm. Simulation results on variational quantum compiling and Quantum Approximation Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) demonstrate the superior performance of our method over a state-of-the-art algorithm, namely Differentiable Quantum Architecture Search (DQAS). Functionally graded materials are widely used in the aerospace, nuclear, and aviation industries because of their exceptional properties. The progressive and continuous variation in elastic and thermal characteristics across its surfaces reduces thermal stress within the material and increases its endurance. To study how functionally gradient thermoelastic nanobeams interact with abrupt heat in the context of nonclassical thermoelasticity with phase delays, this study introduces a new mathematical model incorporating memory-dependent derivatives. A heat transfer equation based on memory-dependent derivatives with two delay times can be formulated by combining Eringen's assumptions, the Hamiltonian principle, and Euler–Bernoulli's theory. The analytical solutions for the domains of the system were obtained in the field of the Laplace transform. The distributions of physical fields such as temperature, displacement, deflection, and flexural moment were found numerically using an approximation algorithm. Through the discussion of the computational results and the graphical figures, the effects of effective parameters such as kernel functions, time delay, and nonlocal quantum were indicated. Moreover, a comparison of the current thermal conductivity model with existing classical and nonclassical thermal conductivity models was established to confirm the proposed model. This paper demonstrates that the space of piecewise-smooth bivariate functions can be well-approximated by the space of the functions defined by a set of simple (non-linear) operations on smooth uniform tensor product splines. In atmospheric modeling, sub-grid parameterization is an important method for studying the topographic effects of solar radiation using high-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. For reducing the amount of computation, some approximate methods that can lead to errors are used in existing sub-grid parameterization schemes for clear-sky direct solar radiation (SPS-CSDSR). The lack of a high-precision fast terrain occlusion algorithm (HPFTOA) remains one of the biggest constraints in this field. This study proposed an HPFTOA. It mainly uses two kinds of acceleration algorithms. One method is to use a dynamic, lossless, and fast occlusion search radius. Another way is to use the rectangular grid for calculations within the accuracy of DEM data to avoid coordinate projection conversions. The test results indicate that the HPFTOA can carry out large-scale computation based on DEM data with a resolution of 90 m. Because it rarely uses approximation algorithms and considers the curvature of the Earth, SPS-CSDSR can achieve unprecedented precision. The HPFTOA can also be used in the fields of mountain solar energy assessment, remote sensing, and telemetry, including terrain-obscuring the probe. We study rectangle stabbing problems in which we are given n axis-aligned rectangles in the plane that we want to stab, that is, we want to select line segments such that for each given rectangle there is a line segment that intersects two opposite edges of it. In the horizontal rectangle stabbing problem (Stabbing), the goal is to find a set of horizontal line segments of minimum total length such that all rectangles are stabbed. In the horizontal–vertical stabbing problem (HV-Stabbing), the goal is to find a set of rectilinear (that is, either vertical or horizontal) line segments of minimum total length such that all rectangles are stabbed. Both variants are NP-hard. Chan et al. (ISAAC, 2018) initiated the study of these problems by providing constant approximation algorithms. Recently, Eisenbrand et al. (A QPTAS for stabbing rectangles, 2021) have presented a QPTAS and a polynomial-time 8-approximation algorithm for Stabbing, but it was open whether the problem admits a PTAS. In this paper, we obtain a PTAS for Stabbing, settling this question. For HV-Stabbing, we obtain a (2 + ε) -approximation. We also obtain PTASs for special cases of HV-Stabbing: (i) when all rectangles are squares, (ii) when each rectangle's width is at most its height, and (iii) when all rectangles are δ -large, that is, have at least one edge whose length is at least δ , while all edge lengths are at most 1. In generalized malleable scheduling, jobs can be allocated and processed simultaneously on multiple machines so as to reduce the overall makespan of the schedule. The required processing time for each job is determined by the joint processing speed of the allocated machines. We study the case that processing speeds are job-dependent M ♮ -concave functions and provide a constant-factor approximation for this setting, significantly expanding the realm of functions for which such an approximation is possible. In the non-uniform sparsest cut problem, we are given a supply graph G and a demand graph D, both with the same set of nodes V. The goal is to find a cut of V that minimizes the ratio of the total capacity on the edges of G crossing the cut over the total demand of the crossing edges of D. In this work, we study the non-uniform sparsest cut problem for supply graphs with bounded treewidth k. For this case, Gupta et al. (ACM STOC, 2013) obtained a 2-approximation with polynomial running time for fixed k, and it remained open the question of whether there exists a c-approximation algorithm for a constant c independent of k, that runs in FPT time. We answer this question in the affirmative. We design a 2-approximation algorithm for the non-uniform sparsest cut with bounded treewidth supply graphs that runs in FPT time, when parameterized by the treewidth. Our algorithm is based on rounding the optimal solution of a linear programming relaxation inspired by the Sherali-Adams hierarchy. In contrast to the classic Sherali-Adams approach, we construct a relaxation driven by a tree decomposition of the supply graph by including a carefully chosen set of lifting variables and constraints to encode information of subsets of nodes with super-constant size, and at the same time we have a sufficiently small linear program that can be solved in FPT time. We consider the class of disjoint bilinear programs max { x T y ∣ x ∈ X , y ∈ Y } where X and Y are packing polytopes. We present an O (log log m 1 log m 1 log log m 2 log m 2 ) -approximation algorithm for this problem where m 1 and m 2 are the number of packing constraints in X and Y respectively. In particular, we show that there exists a near-optimal solution (x ~ , y ~) such that x ~ and y ~ are "near-integral". We give an LP relaxation of the problem from which we obtain the near-optimal near-integral solution via randomized rounding. We show that our relaxation is tightly related to the widely used reformulation linearization technique. As an application of our techniques, we present a tight approximation for the two-stage adjustable robust optimization problem with covering constraints and right-hand side uncertainty where the separation problem is a bilinear optimization problem. In particular, based on the ideas above, we give an LP restriction of the two-stage problem that is an O (log n log log n log L log log L) -approximation where L is the number of constraints in the uncertainty set. This significantly improves over state-of-the-art approximation bounds known for this problem. Furthermore, we show that our LP restriction gives a feasible affine policy for the two-stage robust problem with the same (or better) objective value. We study the autowave front propagation in a medium with discontinuous characteristics and the conditions for its stabilization to a stationary solution with a large gradient at the interface between media in the one-dimensional case. The asymptotic method of differential inequalities, based on constructing an asymptotic approximation of the solution, is the main method of study. We develop an algorithm for constructing such an approximation for the solution of the moving front form in a medium with discontinuous characteristics. The application of such an algorithm requires a detailed analysis of the behavior of the solution in neighborhoods of two singular points: the front localization point and the medium discontinuity point. As a result, we obtain a system of equations for the front propagation speed; this distinguishes this paper from the previously published ones. We consider the weighted completion time minimization problem for capacitated parallel machines, which is a fundamental problem in modern cloud computing environments. In our setting, the processed jobs may be of varying duration, require different resources, and be of unequal importance (weight). Each server (machine) can process multiple concurrent jobs up to its capacity. We study heuristic approaches with provable approximation guarantees and offer an algorithm that prioritizes the jobs with the smallest volume-by-weight ratio. We bound the algorithm's approximation ratio using a decreasing function of the ratio between the highest resource demand of any job and the server's capacity. Thereafter, we create a hybrid, constant approximation algorithm for two or more machines. We also develop a constant approximation algorithm for the case of a single machine. Via a numerical study and a mixed-integer linear program of the problem, we demonstrate the performance of the suggested algorithm with respect to the optimal solutions and alternative scheduling methods. We show that the suggested scheduling method can be applied to both offline and online problems that may arise in real-world settings. This research is the first, to the best of our knowledge, to propose a polynomial-time algorithm with a constant approximation ratio for minimizing the weighted sum of job completion times for capacitated parallel machines. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) envisions enhanced surveillance and control for industrial applications through diverse IoT devices. However, the increasing heterogeneity of deployed end devices poses challenges to current practices, hampering overall performance as device numbers escalate. To tackle this issue, we introduce an innovative distributed power control algorithm leveraging the wireless channel's nature to approximate the centralized maximum-weight scheduling algorithm. Employing ubiquitous multi-protocol mobile devices as intermediaries, we propose a concurrent dual-hop/multi-hop backhauling strategy, improving interoperability and facilitating data relay, translation, and forwarding from end IoT devices. Our focus is directed towards addressing large-scale network stability and queue management challenges. We formulate a long-term time-averaged optimization problem, incorporating considerations of end-to-end rate control, routing, link scheduling, and resource allocation to guarantee essential network-wide throughput. Furthermore, we present a real-time decomposition-based approximation algorithm that ensures adaptive resource allocation, queue stability, and meeting Quality of Service (QoS) constraints with the highest energy efficiency. Comprehensive numerical results verify significant energy efficiency improvements across diverse traffic models, maintaining throughput requirements for both uniform and hotspot User Equipment (UE) distribution patterns. This article focuses on designing efficient iteration algorithms for nonequilibrium three‐temperature heat conduction equations, which are used to formulate the radiative energy transport problem. Based on the framework of relaxation iteration, we design a new accelerated iteration algorithm by reasonable approximation of the Jacobi matrix, according to the characteristics of the discrete scheme for the three‐temperature equations. Adopting the iteration framework, we analyze the advantages and disadvantages of several iteration algorithms commonly used in practice and the new iteration algorithm. Finally, we compare the new iteration algorithm with some other iteration algorithms by solving several nonlinear models, and show that the new algorithm can achieve significant acceleration effect. To address the control performance and harmonic suppression issues in maritime vessel rudder permanent magnet servo systems, a fractional-order PID controller was introduced into the existing improved repetitive control strategy. We used the Oustaloup approximation algorithm and particle swarm optimization for tuning the fractional-order PID controller. The optimized parameters substantially improved the control performance. By integrating the fractional-order PID controller with the improved repetitive controller, a composite fractional-order PID repetitive control strategy was formed. Finally, MATLAB/Simulink simulations were conducted to compare and verify the disturbance rejection and harmonic suppression capabilities of the improved control strategy. In this paper, the optimal approximation algorithm is proposed to simplify non-linear functions and/or discrete data as piecewise polynomials by using the constrained least squares. In time-sensitive applications or in embedded systems with limited resources, the runtime of the approximate function is as crucial as its accuracy. The proposed algorithm searches for the optimal piecewise polynomial (OPP) with the minimum computational cost while ensuring that the error is below a specified threshold. This was accomplished by using smooth piecewise polynomials with optimal order and numbers of intervals. The computational cost only depended on polynomial complexity, i.e., the order and the number of intervals at runtime function call. In previous studies, the user had to decide one or all of the orders and the number of intervals. In contrast, the OPP approximation algorithm determines both of them. For the optimal approximation, computational costs for all the possible combinations of piecewise polynomials were calculated and tabulated in ascending order for the specific target CPU off-line. Each combination was optimized through constrained least squares and the random selection method for the given sample points. Afterward, whether the approximation error was below the predetermined value was examined. When the error was permissible, the combination was selected as the optimal approximation, or the next combination was examined. Personalized travel itinerary recommendation algorithms are the focus of research in smart tourism and tourism GIS. Aiming to address issues present in travel itinerary recommendations for the increasingly popular "self-drive tour" mode, this study proposes an algorithm based on comprehensive tourist satisfaction to mitigate problems such as the neglect of important relevant factors and low degree of personalization. First, we construct a model of tourist satisfaction for travel itineraries by comprehensively considering factors including time utilization, the attractiveness of attractions, itinerary feasibility, and the diversity of attraction types. Unlike previous studies, we consider dining and accommodation time during the itinerary, the physical condition of tourists, and the diversity of attraction types, and establish penalty functions to flexibly constrain deviations from the expected conditions in itinerary planning. Then, with the optimization of comprehensive tourist satisfaction as the objective, we design a new algorithm to address the itinerary recommendation problem, supporting tourists in selecting must-visit attractions, restaurants, and hotels, as well as personalized preferences such as the sightseeing sequence. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms two baseline algorithms, providing higher comprehensive tourist satisfaction while also exhibiting greater feasibility in itinerary planning. In this paper, a joint optimization algorithm of offloading decision, energy harvesting time, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) location is proposed for user equipment (UEs)'s task completion latency problem in a communication–sensing–computing integration scenario with wireless energy supply. Under the constraints of causality of energy harvesting consumption by the UEs and conditional mutual information, the total latency minimization problem of the UEs is established. Firstly, the optimization variables of the problem are transformed from three variables of offloading decision, energy harvesting time, and UAV location to two variables of offloading decision and UAV location by means of the derived closed expression, and then the transformed optimization problem is decomposed into the offloading decision optimization sub-problem and the UAV location optimization sub-problem to be solved alternately and iteratively. The genetic algorithm is employed to tackle the optimization sub-problem of offloading decisions, and the successive convex approximation algorithm is applied to the drone positioning optimization sub-problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm in this paper reduces the average task completion latency by 35 percent and 15 percent, respectively, compared to the two baseline algorithms for different numbers of UEs. We study the synchronization properties of a generic networked dynamical system, and show that, under a suitable approximation, the transition to synchronization can be predicted with the only help of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian matrix. The transition comes out to be made of a well defined sequence of events, each of which corresponds to a specific clustered state. The network's nodes involved in each of the clusters can be identified, and the value of the coupling strength at which the events are taking place can be approximately ascertained. Finally, we present large-scale simulations which show the accuracy of the approximation made, and of our predictions in describing the synchronization transition of both synthetic and real-world large size networks, and we even report that the observed sequence of clusters is preserved in heterogeneous networks made of slightly non-identical systems. Natural and synthetic networked systems can be characterized by synchrony or asynchrony of groups of their nodes (clusters) and undergo different scenarios of synchronization transitions. We revisit the problem of property testing for convex position for point sets in ℝ. Our results draw from previous ideas of Czumaj, Sohler, and Ziegler (2000). First, their testing algorithm is redesigned and its analysis is revised for correctness. Second, its functionality is expanded by (i) exhibiting both negative and positive certificates along with the convexity determination, and (ii) significantly extending the input range for moderate and higher dimensions. The behavior of the randomized tester on input set ⊂ ℝ is as follows: (i) if is in convex position, it accepts; (ii) if is far from convex position, with probability at least 2/3, it rejects and outputs a (+2)-point witness of non-convexity as a negative certificate; (iii) if is close to convex position, with probability at least 2/3, it accepts and outputs a subset in convex position that is a suitable approximation of the largest subset in convex position. We present a new generalization of the bin covering problem that is known to be a strongly NP-hard problem. In our generalization there is a positive constant Δ , and we are given a set of items each of which has a positive size. We would like to find a partition of the items into bins. We say that a bin is near exact covered if the total size of items packed into the bin is between 1 and 1 + Δ . Our goal is to maximize the number of near exact covered bins. If Δ = 0 or Δ > 0 is given as part of the input, our problem is shown here to have no approximation algorithm with a bounded asymptotic approximation ratio (assuming that P ≠ N P ). We present a simple sublinear time algorithm that approximates all eigenvalues of A up to additive error ± ϵ n using those of a randomly sampled O ~ log 3 n ϵ 3 × O ~ log 3 n ϵ 3 principal submatrix. Our result can be viewed as a concentration bound on the complete eigenspectrum of a random submatrix, significantly extending known bounds on just the singular values (the magnitudes of the eigenvalues). We give improved error bounds of ± ϵ nnz (A) and ± ϵ ‖ A ‖ F when the rows of A can be sampled with probabilities proportional to their sparsities or their squared ℓ 2 norms respectively. Here nnz (A) is the number of non-zero entries in A and ‖ A ‖ F is its Frobenius norm. Even for the strictly easier problems of approximating the singular values or testing the existence of large negative eigenvalues (Bakshi, Chepurko, and Jayaram, FOCS '20), our results are the first that take advantage of non-uniform sampling to give improved error bounds. From a technical perspective, our results require several new eigenvalue concentration and perturbation bounds for matrices with bounded entries. Our non-uniform sampling bounds require a new algorithmic approach, which judiciously zeroes out entries of a randomly sampled submatrix to reduce variance, before computing the eigenvalues of that submatrix as estimates for those of A . This problem is known to be NP-hard and further proven to be W[1]-hard with respect to k by Koutis (Inf Process Lett 100:8–13, 2006); i.e., a f (k) n O (1) -time algorithm is unlikely to exist for any computable function f. However, there is still room to explore its parameterized complexity in the restricted case, in the hope of overcoming the general-case parameterized intractability. In this study, we rule out the fixed-parameter tractability of Determinant Maximization even if an input matrix is extremely sparse or low rank, or an approximate solution is acceptable. We first prove that Determinant Maximization is NP-hard and W[1]-hard even if an input matrix is an arrowhead matrix; i.e., the underlying graph formed by nonzero entries is a star, implying that the structural sparsity is not helpful. By contrast, Determinant Maximization is known to be solvable in polynomial time on tridiagonal matrices (Al-Thani and Lee, in: LAGOS, 2021). Thereafter, we demonstrate the W[1]-hardness with respect to the rankr of an input matrix. Our result is stronger than Koutis' result in the sense that any k × k principal submatrix is singular whenever k > r . We finally give evidence that it is W[1]-hard to approximate Determinant Maximization parameterized by k within a factor of 2 - c k for some universal constant c > 0 . Our hardness result is conditional on the Parameterized Inapproximability Hypothesis posed by Lokshtanov et al. (in: SODA, 2020), which asserts that a gap version of Binary Constraint Satisfaction Problem is W[1]-hard. To complement this result, we develop an ε -additive approximation algorithm that runs in ε - r 2 · r O (r 3) · n O (1) time for the rank r of an input matrix, provided that the diagonal entries are bounded. Privacy-preserving neural networks offer a promising solution to train and predict without user privacy leakage, and fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) stands out as one of the key technologies, as it enables homomorphic operations over encrypted data. However, only addition and multiplication homomorphisms are supported by FHE, and thus, it faces huge challenges when implementing non-linear functions with ciphertext inputs. Among the non-linear functions in neural networks, one may refer to the activation function, the argmax function, and maximum pooling. Inspired by using a composition of low-degree minimax polynomials to approximate sign and argmax functions, this study focused on optimizing the homomorphic argmax approximation, where argmax is a mathematical operation that identifies the index of the maximum value within a given set of values. For the method that uses compositions of low-degree minimax polynomials to approximate argmax, in order to further reduce approximation errors and improve computational efficiency, we propose an improved homomorphic argmax approximation algorithm that includes rotation accumulation, tree-structured comparison, normalization, and finalization phases. And then, the proposed homomorphic argmax algorithm was integrated into a neural network structure. Comparative experiments indicate that the network with our proposed argmax algorithm achieved a slight increase in accuracy while significantly reducing the inference latency by 58 % , as the homomorphic sign and rotation operations were rapidly reduced.
