Summary: Objective: China has the largest population of patients with epilepsy worldwide, which imposes a heavy burden on the public and health care systems. Several epidemiological surveys on epilepsy have been performed in China. Although these surveys grossly describe the prevalence and gap in treatment of epilepsy, the status of epilepsy centers is unclear. The number of epilepsy centers has increased substantially in recent decades. Therefore, a nationwide investigation of the scale and distribution, personnel, equipment, and epilepsy care capacity of each epilepsy center is of great value. Methods: In 2017–2018, a multicenter cross‐sectional survey was performed by the Commission on Standardized Development of Epilepsy Centers, China Association Against Epilepsy in 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. The survey consisted of 74 questions divided into four sections: (1) overview, (2) personnel, (3) essential equipment and facilities, and (4) epilepsy care service capacity. The questions ranged from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: There were 358 epilepsy centers for the 1.38 billion national population in 2016. Three quarters were in the eastern and western regions, and >90% were in tertiary hospitals. There were 9688 doctors engaged in epilepsy care, and 4.8% of doctors and electrophysiological physicians/technicians passed the national test for electroencephalography technical accreditation. A total of 9667 patients underwent resective surgeries in 2016. There were 888 vagus nerve stimulation procedures and 275 deep brain stimulation procedures. Significance: This study is the first unique survey of epilepsy centers in China. Despite their rapid development, epilepsy centers cannot meet patients' needs at this stage. Background: Surgery of parasagittal meningiomas (PSMs) is still technically challenging, for the balance between radical resection and preservation of venous circulation. In this article, we'd systemically introduce the technical nuances of a simplified strategy for radical resection of all types of PSMs. All the cases were operated by one single neurosurgeon from a single institution. Methods: Clinical charts of patients with PSMs between 2014 and 2020were retrospectively reviewed. A simplified classification method was adopted, which was based on the relationship between the tumor and superior sagittal sinus (SSS). Surgery aiming at radical resection and venous flow preservation was performed. Only in case of total occlusion of SSS, we performed tumor resection without reconstruction of the venous sinus. Results: Clinical data obtained in 55 consecutive patients (47 primary and 8 recurrent cases) were analyzed, among which 20 were with patent sinus, 27 were with partially occluded sinus and 8 were with completely occluded sinus. Forty-two (76.4%) and 13 patients (23.6%) had the same and improved functional status as compared to that of pre-operation, respectively. Four patients (7.3%) experienced transient neurological deterioration but improved to the normal level in the long-term follow-up. All patients achieved Simpson I/II radical resection. No patients suffered from post-operative recurrence in the follow-up duration of 27.05 ± 19.55 (2–91) months. Conclusion: Radical and safe resection of all types of PSMs is achievable and not difficult if the simplified surgical strategy mentioned in the article is adopted, no matter to which extent the sinus is invaded. The roles of some long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in intracranial aneurysm (IA) have been investigated in many studies. The aim of this study is to elucidate the mechanism of lncRNA metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1)/microRNA-143 (miR-143)/vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGFA) signal axis in vascular endothelial injury-induced IA. MALAT1, miR-143, and VEGFA expression in IA tissues and normal arterial tissues were detected. Matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) in tissues, von Willebrand factor (vWF) in serum and tissues, and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in serum were detected. The modeled IA rats were injected with silenced or overexpressed MALAT1 for detecting vascular endothelial injury. Vascular endothelial cells from patients with IA were abstracted and transfected with silenced or overexpressed MALAT1 to verify the impacts of MALAT1 on cell viability and apoptosis. The connections among MALAT1, miR-143, and VEGFA were verified by online prediction, luciferase activity, and RNA-pull down assays. Overexpression of MALAT1 and VEGFA and poor expression of miR-143 were found in IA tissues. Downregulation of MALAT1 inhibited blood pressure, the expression of ET-1, vWF, and MMP-9, as well as the apoptotic index of vascular endothelial cells of rats with IA. Downregulated MALAT1 inhibited apoptosis and promoted viability of vascular endothelial cells in IA. MALAT1 bound to miR-143 and miR-143 targeted VEGFA. This study suggests that MALAT1 elevates VEGFA expression through competitive binding to miR-143, thereby boosting apoptosis and attenuating viability of vascular endothelial cells in IA. The effects of microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified in epilepsy (Ep) in recent years, our research was focused on the functions of miR-494 in Ep and its inner mechanisms. The Ep modeled rats induced by lithium chloride-pilocarpine were treated with agomir-miR-494 or RIPK1-siRNA. The pathology of rat hippocampal tissues was observed. Expression of miR-494, receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) p65 was assessed by RT-qPCR and Western blot analysis. The hippocampal neurons of epileptic rats were successfully modeled, which were transfected with miR-494 mimics or RIPK1-siRNA to determine neurons' proliferation ability and cell apoptosis. The target relation between miR-494 and RIPK1 was measured by bioinformatics website and dual luciferase gene reporter assay. The expression of miR-494 was reduced, while the expression of RIPK1 and NF-κB p65 was amplified in hippocampus of Ep rats. Elevated miR-494 repressed the expression of RIPK1 to ameliorate the hippocampal neuron injury, accelerate neuronal proliferation, and restrain neuronal apoptosis via inactivating the NF-κB signaling pathway, causing a deceleration of Ep development. Furthermore, amplified RIPK1 was able to reverse the amelioration of neuronal injury in Ep rats which was contributed by upregulated miR-494. We found in this study that elevated miR-494 repressed RIPK1, causing an inactivation of the NF-κB signaling pathway and acceleration of cell proliferation, and suppression of apoptosis of hippocampal neurons in Ep rats, thereby attenuating the neuron injury and Ep development. Background: Internal neurolysis (IN) is an effective surgical treatment for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) without neurovascular compression (NVC) or postoperative recurrence. However, the trigeminal nerve is directly manipulated during the procedure, and there is a high incidence of trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR). The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze the outcome of IN and to explore its relationship with the occurrence of intraoperative TCR. Methods: Surgical and anesthesia records of 27 TN patients who underwent surgical treatment with IN at our department between March 2010 and September 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into 2 groups on the basis of the occurrence of TCR during surgery, and clinical characteristics were compared. Pain intensity was assessed by the Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) pain intensity score and BNI facial numbness score. Results: TCR was observed in 23 of 27 patients (85.2%); it manifested as obvious changes in mean arterial pressure and heart rate by at least 20% of the baseline values. Trigeminal nerve atrophy was found in 9 patients (33.3%). The immediate pain-free rate was 96.3%, and the "excellent" rate was 72.1% for follow-up, with a rate of numbness or hypesthesia of 97.1%. These outcomes were retrospectively compared between the TCR and non-TCR groups, and there was a nonsignificantly higher "excellent" rate in the TCR group than in the non-TCR group. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that IN is an effective treatment for TN without NVC and has a close relationship with intraoperative TCR. Objective: This study addressed the benefit of intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) compared with conventional neuronavigation-guided resection in patients with gliomas.Research Design and Methods: The Medline, PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases were searched up to 26 September 2015. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), two-arm prospective studies, and retrospective studies in patients with glioblastoma/glioma who had received surgical treatment were included.Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome measures were the extent of tumor resection and tumor size reduction for using iMRI-guided or conventional neuronavigation-guided neurosurgery. Secondary outcomes included impact of surgery on 6 month progression-free survival (PFS), 12 month overall survival (OS) rates and surgical duration.Results: We found that iMRI was associated with greater rate of gross total resection (rGTR) compared with conventional neuronavigation procedures (3.16, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.07-4.83, P < .001). We found no difference between the two neuronavigation approaches in extent of resection (EOR), tumor size reduction, or time required for surgery (P values ≥.065). Intraoperative MRI was associated with a higher rate of progression-free survival (PFS) compared with conventional neuronavigation (odds ratio, 1.84; 95% CI 1.15-2.95; P = .012), but the rate of overall survival (OS) between groups was similar (P = .799). Limitations of the study included the fact that data from non-RCTs was used, the small study population, and heterogeneity of outcomes across studies.Conclusions: Our findings indicate that iMRI more frequently resulted in more complete resections leading to improved PFS in patients with malignant gliomas. Skeletal myoblast (SkMB) transplantation has been conducted as a therapeutic strategy for severe heart failure. However, arrhythmogenicity following transplantation remains unsolved. We developed an in vitro model of myoblast transplantation with 'patterned' or 'randomly-mixed' co-culture of SkMBs and cardiomyocytes enabling subsequent electrophysiological, and arrhythmogenic evaluation. SkMBs were magnetically labeled with magnetite nanoparticles and co-cultured with neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVMs) on multi-electrode arrays. SkMBs were patterned by a magnet beneath the arrays. Excitation synchronicity was evaluated by Ca2+ imaging using a gene-encoded Ca2+ indicator, G-CaMP2. In the monoculture of NRVMs (control), conduction was well-organized. In the randomly-mixed co-culture of NRVMs and SkMBs (random group), there was inhomogeneous conduction from multiple origins. In the 'patterned' co-culture where an en bloc SKMB-layer was inserted into the NRVM-layer, excitation homogenously propagated although conduction was distorted by the SkMB-area. The 4-mm distance conduction time (CT) in the random group was significantly longer (197 ± 126 ms) than in control (17 ± 3 ms). In the patterned group, CT through NRVM-area did not change (25 ± 3 ms), although CT through the SkMB-area was significantly longer (132 ± 77 ms). The intervals between spontaneous excitation varied beat-to-beat in the random group, while regular beating was recorded in the control and patterned groups. Synchronized Ca2+ transients of NRVMs were observed in the patterned group, whereas those in the random group were asynchronous. Patterned alignment of SkMBs is feasible with magnetic nanoparticles. Using the novel in vitro model mimicking cell transplantation, it may become possible to predict arrhythmogenicity due to heterogenous cell transplantation. J. Cell. Background: Illicit drug use has become an increasing public health and social concern in the past decades worldwide. Intravenous injection has an elevated risk of infection. Needle embolism is a rare complication of intravenous drug users, Retained broken needles can lead to local complications, such as infection, but they also have the potential to embolize to heart or lung, and lead to serious complications.Method: We reported a rare case of an intravenous drug user which a retained broken needle fragments in the inferior wall of the right ventricle.Results: We performed a successful surgery and give our comments and recommendations for illicit drug use worldwide and in China.Conclusions: Illicit Drug use becomes a global problem because of its health and social harmfulness. Molecular signaling of cardiac autonomic innervation is an unresolved issue. Here, we show that glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) promotes cardiac sympathetic innervation in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, ventricular myocytes (VMs) and sympathetic neurons (SNs) isolated from neonatal rat ventricles and superior cervical ganglia were cultured at a close distance. Then, morphological and functional coupling between SNs and VMs was assessed in response to GDNF (10 ng/ml) or nerve growth factor (50 ng/ml). As a result, fractions of neurofilament-M-positive axons and synapsin-I-positive area over the surface of VMs were markedly increased with GDNF by 9-fold and 25-fold, respectively, compared to control without neurotrophic factors. Pre- and post-synaptic stimulation of β1-adrenergic receptors (BAR) with nicotine and noradrenaline, respectively, resulted in an increase of the spontaneous beating rate of VMs co-cultured with SNs in the presence of GDNF. GDNF overexpressing VMs by adenovirus vector (AdGDNF-VMs) attracted more axons from SNs compared with mock-transfected VMs. In vivo, axon outgrowth toward the denervated myocardium in adult rat hearts after cryoinjury was also enhanced significantly by adenovirus-mediated GDNF overexpression. GDNF acts as a potent chemoattractant for sympathetic innervation of ventricular myocytes, and is a promising molecular target for regulation of cardiac function in diseased hearts. Objective: We were interested in studying nigral degeneration with inclusion body formation and behavioral changes in rats after proteasomal inhibition. Methods: Observation of progressive behavioral and pathological changes in rats following a unilateral nigral injection of lactacystin, a selective proteasome inhibitor. Results: After administration at a concentration of 10 μg (2 μl) of lactacystin, when tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunostaining decreased gradually in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and corpus striatum, α-synuclein-immunopositive inclusion appeared extensively in the surviving neurons. We also observed the degeneration of diverse cellular organelles by transmission electron microscopy. The effect of cellular organelle degeneration on behavior, a clinical index, was striking and was statistically significant. Over the 3 weeks following the administration of lactacystin, a highly significant decrease in TH immunostaining was observed and α-synuclein-immunopositive inclusions gradually appeared. Interestingly, there was a strong correlation in behavioral changes and the increase in α-synuclein-immunopositive inclusions whereas the decrease in TH immunostaining did not seem to induce any behavioral changes. Conclusions: Our results reveal that unilateral nigral proteasome inhibition induces degeneration in the SNc and corpus striatum as well as behavioral changes demonstrating strong time dependence. OBJECTIVES An aortic aneurysm (AA) is caused by atherosclerosis with chronic inflammation. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have potential anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, we examined whether an already-formed AA can be treated by intravenous injection of bone marrow-derived (BM)-MSCs in a mouse model. METHODS AA was induced in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice by angiotensin II-infusion for 28 days through sub-cutaneous osmotic mini-pumps. After that, 1 × 106 BM-MSCs (in 0.2 ml saline) or 0.2 ml saline as a control was injected via the tail vein. Mice were sacrificed at 2 (saline group n = 10, BM-MSC group n = 10), 4 (saline group n = 6, BM-MSC group n = 7) or 8 weeks (saline group n = 5, BM-MSC group n = 6) after injection. The aortic tissues of each group were dissected. Aortic diameter, elastin content, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 enzymatic activity and cytokine concentrations were measured, as was macrophage infiltration, which was also evaluated histologically. RESULTS The incidence of AA in the BM-MSC group was reduced at 2 weeks (BM-MSC 40% vs saline 100%, P < 0.05), and aortic diameter was reduced at 2 and 4 weeks (2 weeks: 1.40 vs 2.29 mm, P < 0.001; 4 weeks: 1.73 vs 2.32 mm, P < 0.05). The enzymatic activities of MMP-2 and -9 were reduced in the BM-MSC group at 2 weeks (active-MMP-2: 0.28 vs 0.45 unit/ml, P < 0.05; active-MMP-9: 0.16 vs 0.34 unit/ml, P < 0.05). Inflammatory cytokines were down-regulated in the BM-MSC group (interleukin-6: 2 weeks: 1475.6 vs 3399.5 pg/ml, P < 0.05; 4 weeks: 2184.7 vs 3712.8 pg/ml, P < 0.05 and monocyte chemotactic protein-1: 2 weeks: 208.0 vs 352.7 pg/ml, P < 0.05) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-2 were up-regulated in the BM-MSC group at 2 weeks (IGF-1: 4.7 vs 2.0 ng/ml, P < 0.05; TIMP-2: 9.5 vs 4.0 ng/ml, P < 0.001). BM-MSC injection inhibited infiltration of M1 macrophages and preserved the construction of elastin. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that BM-MSCs might be an effective treatment for AA. A fixed retractor is routinely used during surgery for vestibular schwannoma to maintain the surgical corridor; however, brain injuries can be caused by use of retractors. The aim of this study was to present strategies for retractorless surgery for giant vestibular schwannomas and compare retractorless surgery with traditional retractor-assisted surgery to illustrate feasibility and potentially superiority of retractorless surgery. Clinical data of 61 patients with giant (≥4 cm diameter) vestibular schwannomas undergoing craniotomy were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into 2 cohorts: 1) 35 patients with traditional retractor surgery performed between June 2016 and July 2017; 2) 26 patients with retractorless surgery performed between June 2016 and July 2018. Duration of operation, intraoperative blood loss, extent of resection, rate of retention of facial nerve function, postoperative brain injury rate, intracranial infection rate, hospitalization time, and grade of facial nerve function were compared between the 2 groups. The incidence of postoperative brain injury was 3.84% in the retractorless surgery group, which was significantly lower compared with the traditional retractor surgery group (22.86%) (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found regarding the other characteristics compared. Through appropriate comprehensive measures, retractorless surgery for giant vestibular schwannomas is an achievable goal. Epilepsy is one of the most common diseases of the nervous system. Approximately one-third of epilepsy cases are drug-resistant, among which generalized-onset seizures are very common. The present study aimed to analyze abnormalities of the thalamocortical fiber pathways in each hemisphere of the brains of patients with drug-resistant generalized epilepsy. The thalamocortical structural pathways were identified by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in 15 patients with drug-resistant generalized epilepsy and 16 gender/age-matched controls. The thalami of both groups were parcellated into subregions according to the local thalamocortical connectivity pattern. DTI measures of thalamocortical connections were compared between the two groups. Probabilistic tractography analyses showed that fractional anisotropy of thalamocortical pathways in patients with epilepsy decreased significantly, and the radial diffusivity of the left thalamus pathways with homolateral motor and parietal-occipital cortical regions in the drug-resistant epilepsy group increased significantly. In addition to the right thalamus pathway and prefrontal cortical region, fractional anisotropy of all other pathways was inversely correlated with disease duration. The results provide evidence indicating widespread bilateral abnormalities in the thalamocortical pathways in epilepsy patients and imply that the degree of abnormality in the pathway increases with the disease duration. Labor division of the two brain hemispheres refers to the dominant processing of input information on one side of the brain. At an early stage, or a preattentive stage, the right brain hemisphere is shown to dominate the auditory processing of tones, including lexical tones. However, little is known about the influence of brain damage on the labor division of the brain hemispheres for the auditory processing of linguistic tones. Here, we demonstrate swapped dominance of brain hemispheres at the preattentive stage of auditory processing of Chinese lexical tones after a stroke in the right temporal lobe (RTL). In this study, we frequently presented lexical tones to a group of patients with a stroke in the RTL and infrequently varied the tones to create an auditory contrast. The contrast evoked a mismatch negativity response, which indexes auditory processing at the preattentive stage. In the participants with a stroke in the RTL, the mismatch negativity response was lateralized to the left side, in contrast to the right lateralization pattern in the control participants. The swapped dominance of brain hemispheres indicates that the RTL is a core area for early-stage auditory tonal processing. Seizures are a common symptom of craniocerebral diseases, and epilepsy is one of the comorbidities of craniocerebral diseases. However, how to rationally use anti-seizure medications (ASMs) in the perioperative period of craniocerebral surgery to control or avoid seizures and reduce their associated harm is a problem. The China Association Against Epilepsy (CAAE) united with the Trauma Group of the Chinese Neurosurgery Society, Glioma Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Neuro-Oncology Branch of the Chinese Neuroscience Society, and Neurotraumatic Group of Chinese Trauma Society, and selected experts for consultancy regarding outcomes from evidence-based medicine in domestic and foreign literature. These experts referred to the existing research evidence, drug characteristics, Chinese FDA-approved indications, and expert experience, and finished the current guideline on the application of ASMs during the perioperative period of craniocerebral surgery, aiming to guide relevant clinical practice. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are usually enriched in neural tissues, yet about 80% circRNAs have lower expression in gliomas relative to normal brains, highlighting the importance of circRNAs as tumor suppressors. However, the clinical impact as well as the pathways regulated by the tumor-suppressive circRNAs remain largely unknown in glioblastoma (GBM). Through bioinformatic analysis followed by experimental validation, we found that hsa&#95;circ&#95;0114014 (circLRRC7) was dramatically down-regulated in GBM when compared with normal brain tissues ( p < 0.0001). GBM patients with a lower circLRRC7 expression had poorer progression-free survival (PFS, p < 0.05) and overall survival (OS, p < 0.05). Analyses of the predicted target miRNAs of circLRRC7 in CSCD and CRI databases, in combination with the miRNA expression data in GBMs and normal brains from GSE database, revealed miR-1281 as a potential downstream target of circLRRC7. Subsequently, the target genes of hsa-mir-1281 were predicted by TargetScan, miRDB and miRNATAR databases. Intersection analysis and correlation test indicated that PDXP was a potential target of miR-1281. Background: Refractory epilepsy is a common and troublesome neurosurgical disease. This study is designed to compare seizure control and degrees in intellectual outcome in children with refractory epilepsy after surgical treatment., Methods: 20 children with refractory epilepsy were treated with tailored epilepsy surgery or vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). We used the Engel Epilepsy Surgery Outcome Scale to evaluate seizure control and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, fourth edition (WISC-IV), to test the children's intellectual outcomes 7-day preoperative and 3-, 6-, and 12-month postoperative., Results: In total, 14 cases were seizure free (Engel I) and 2 cases to have suffered few attacks since surgery (Engel II). In two cases, the frequency of seizures decreased by >90% (Engel III). In the remaining two cases, the effects of surgery on seizure control were not obvious (Engel IV). All children completed the WISC-IV test. On average, postoperative intelligence quotient (IQ) increased by 6.35 points 12-month postsurgery compared with the results of the preoperative tests ( P < 0.01). Second, intellectual outcomes after surgery in the Engel I and II groups increased by >3.88 points compared with in the Engel III and IV groups ( P < 0.05). Finally, there were no fatal complications over the long-term follow-up except for intracranial infection of two cases; postoperative subcutaneous hematoma occurred in one case and hoarseness in one case., Conclusion: Individualized epilepsy surgery is safe and effective for children with refractory epilepsy. Background: Illicit drug use has become an increasing public health and social concern in the past decades worldwide. Intravenous injection has an elevated risk of infection. Needle embolism is a rare complication of intravenous drug users, Retained broken needles can lead to local complications, such as infection, but they also have the potential to embolize to heart or lung, and lead to serious complications., Method: We reported a rare case of an intravenous drug user which a retained broken needle fragments in the inferior wall of the right ventricle., Results: We performed a successful surgery and give our comments and recommendations for illicit drug use worldwide and in China., Conclusions: Illicit Drug use becomes a global problem because of its health and social harmfulness. To help drug addicts and provide prevention and treatment services are the obligations and responsibilities of all medical workers.

BACKGROUND Sun's procedure is a surgical technique widely used in type A aortic dissection. The purpose of this study was to analyze clinical outcomes and morphologic changes in true and false lumen by computed tomography (CT) angiography after Sun's procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 51 patients who underwent Sun's procedure for acute Stanford type A aortic dissection extending down to iliac bifurcation between January 2013 and December 2014. The images of preoperative, one-month, three-month, and six-month follow-up were analyzed by CT angiography to measure the area and diameter of true and false lumen. RESULTS Four patients died before surgical intervention and postoperative deaths occurred in five patients (in-hospital mortality rate 10.6%). Only 42 patients (36 male, 6 female; mean age, 45.9±9.8 years; range, 24-65 years) with acute type A aortic dissection were involved in our study. Thirty-five patients (83.3%) suffered from chest or abdominal pain and only one patient (2.4%) was asymptomatic. Thirty-seven patients (88.1%) had hypertension as the most common comorbidity. In the ascending aorta, false lumen was eliminated and the change of true lumen was not significant (p>0.05). In the descending aorta, complete and partial thrombosis of false lumen were observed in eight patients (19.0%) and 33 patients (78.6%) by one-month follow-up CT scan, respectively. After the six-month follow-up, the rate of complete thrombosis increased to 36.1% and partial thrombosis decreased to 61.9%. The area and maximal diameter of true lumen were increased significantly (p<0.05), whereas significant decreases were found in the area and maximal diameter of false lumen (p<0.05). In the abdominal aorta, thrombosis was found in 52.4% patients at one-month follow-up CT. Furthermore, there were no significant changes in both true and false lumen within three months (p>0.05). Nevertheless, the false luminal area and maximal diameter decreased significantly (p<0.05) after six months, while these changes of true lumen were not significant (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS After Sun's procedure, aortic remodeling was a continuous process and occurred in a predictable model, and the extent of aortic remodeling varied at different levels. Remodeling in descending thoracic aorta was earlier than it was in abdominal aorta.

Embolisation of irregular and complicated aneurysms is a great challenge for neuroradiologists. To overcome possible complications of endovascular treatment of these type of aneurysms, methods such as intracranial stents, balloon remodelling, and the double microcatheter technique have been developed. The aim of the study was to report our preliminary experience with endovascular treatment of irregular and complicated intracranial aneurysm with coils using double microcatheter technique, and evaluation of its feasibility and clinical advantages. In this retrospective study, 37 cases diagnosed with irregular and complicated intracranial aneurysms and treated using double microcatheter method from July, 2013 to May, 2015, were followed up for six months after discharge. All the aneurysms were successfully embolized using the double microcatheter technique. Immediate post-embolization angiography showed no residual contrast filling in 35 cases, and residual filling in 2 cases. At discharge, according to the modified Rankin Scale score, all the patients recovered without any complications or death. A follow-up of 24 cases with digital subtraction angiography for 6 months revealed no recanalization. In conclusion, the double microcatheter technique for irregular intracranial aneurysms is effective and simple with few complications.

Background: Cranioplasty is considered as a routine procedure in everyday neurosurgical practice for the patient with cranial defect, however, there is no established consensus on optimal surgical timing., Objective: To compare the effect of early cranioplasty (1-3 months after DC) and late cranioplasty (3-6 months after DC) on the complications and recovery of neurological function in the management of patients who received decompressive craniotomy., Methods: In this paper, the authors report a systematic review and meta-analysis of operative time, complications and neurological function outcomes on different timing of cranioplasty. Randomized or non-randomized controlled trials of early cranioplasty and late cranioplasty surgery were considered for inclusion., Results: Nine published reports of eligible studies involving 1209 participants meet the inclusion criteria. Compared with late cranioplasty, early cranioplasty had no significant difference in overall complications [RR=1.14, 95%CI (0.83, 1.55), p>0.05], infection rates [RR=0.87, 95%CI (0.47, 1.61), p>0.05], intracranial hematoma [RR=1.09, 95%CI (0.53, 2.25), p>0.05]; subdural fluid collection [RR=0.47, 95%CI (0.15, 1.41), p>0.05]. However, early CP significantly reduced the duration of cranioplasty [mean difference=-13.46, 95%CI (-21.26, 5.67), p<0.05]. The postoperative hydrocephalus rates were significant higher in the early cranioplasty group [RR=2.67, 95%CI (1.24, 5.73), p<0.05]., Conclusion: Early CP can only reduce the duration of operation, but cannot reduce the complications of patients and even increase the risk of hydrocephalus. More evidence from advanced multi-center studies is needed to provide illumination for the timing selection of CP surgery., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

Molecular signaling of sympathetic innervation of myocardium is an unresolved issue. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of neurotrophic factors on sympathetic neurite growth towards cardiomyocytes. Cardiomyocytes (CMs) and sympathetic neurons (SNs) were isolated from neonatal rat hearts and superior cervical ganglia, and were co-cultured, either in a random or localized way. Neurite growth from SNs toward CMs was assessed by immunohistochemistry for neurofilament M and α-actinin in response to neurotrophic factors-nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and a chemical repellent, semaphorin 3A. As a result, GDNF as well as NGF and BDNF stimulated neurite growth. GDNF enhanced neurite outgrowth even under the NGF-depleted culture condition, excluding an indirect effect of GDNF via NGF. Quantification of mRNA and protein by real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry at different developmental stages revealed that GDNF is abundantly expressed in the hearts of embryos and neonates, but not in adult hearts. GDNF plays an important role in inducing cardiac sympathetic innervation at the early developmental stages. A possible role in (re)innervation of injured or transplanted or cultured and transplanted myocardium may deserve investigation.
