Abstract

A growing body of research finds that neurotypical autistic traits are predictive of speech perception and language comprehension patterns, but considerably less is known about the influence of these traits on speech production. In this brief report, we present an analysis of vowel productions from 74 American English speakers who participated in a communicative speaking task. Results show higher autistic trait load to be broadly and inversely related to spectral correlates of vowel intelligibility. However, the statistical significance of this relationship is specific to autistic traits along the pragmatic communication dimension, and limited to female speakers.

Abstract

Inspired by erythrocytes that contain oxygen-carrying hemoglobin (Hb) and that exhibit photo-driven activity, we introduce homogenous-sized erythrocyte-like Hb microgel (μGel) systems (5–6 μm) that can (i) emit heat, (ii) supply oxygen, and (iii) generate reactive oxygen species (ROS; 1O2) in response to near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. Hb μGels consist of Hb, bovine serum albumin (BSA), chlorin e6 (Ce6) and erbium@lutetium upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs; ∼35 nm) that effectively convert 808 nm NIR light to 660 nm visible light. These Hb μGels are capable of releasing oxygen to help generate sufficient reactive oxygen species (1O2) from UCNPs/Ce6 under severely hypoxic condition upon NIR stimulation for efficient photodynamic activity. Moreover, the Hb μGels emit heat and increase surface temperature due to NIR light absorption by heme (iron protoporphyrin IX) and display photothermal activity. By changing the Hb/UCNP/Ce6 ratio and controlling the amount of NIR laser irradiation, it is possible to formulate bespoke Hb μGels with either photothermal or photodynamic activity or both in the context of combined therapeutic effect. These Hb μGels effectively suppress highly hypoxic 4T1 cell spheroid growth and xenograft mice tumors in vivo.

21. Three essays on retail globalisation and international trade

Abstract

Using the empirical context of Korea's retail sector, this thesis brings together three empirical essays that examine the significance of the retail sector in the global economy. The first essay examines how retail market powers influence the impact of tariff cuts on consumer prices in the context of Korea's tariff reduction since the mid-1980s. Using consumption-item-level consumer price index (CPI) and product-level tariff data with a new matching strategy, we empirically find that tariff cuts incompletely pass through to consumer prices. Guided by a simple theoretical framework based on an oligopolistic competition model with a nested CES demand, this essay considers markups charged by retailers as a new channel by which consumer prices do not fully react to tariff cuts. To identify the retail markup channel, we firstly find that tariff pass-through to consumer prices are deteriorated in regions with greater retail market concentrations. Further, this essay measures retail markups proxied by price-cost margins, and quantifies the degree to which retail markups exacerbate tariff pass-through using a new instrumental variable strategy. The instrument variable estimation reveals that a 10 percentage point increase in retail markups contributes to 1.73-1.96 percent lower tariff pass-through. Our results are robust with estimation based on limited four-year census data by which we account for store-level variations and geographical market heterogeneities in retail markup measure. We also estimate the retail markup channel augmented by spatial autoregressive (SAR) regression model to control for CPI's spatially cross-section dependence, and the results are robust. The second essay aims to answer the question about whether strategic interactions affect FDI (Foreign Direct Investment)'s market entry. From the literature, the answer is less clear as host-country markets are generally considered as being perfectly competitive. Under the imperfectly competitive market, however, even multinational enterprises cannot act in a vacuum. In this essay, we study the strategic aspect of FDI's entry into host-country markets. To study it, we use an empirical context of the Korean discounting retail industry where, as the first and the second biggest firms, a domestic retailer (Emart) competes with a multinational retailer (Tesco) by opening multiple stores across local markets. We empirically show that retail FDI enters host-country markets strategically by reduced-form estimations. Further, we build an entry game-theoretical model in which the strategic interaction is fully incorporated, and estimate the structural parameters of the model. The existence of strategic entry is clearly confirmed by structural estimation results. We also find that asymmetric information between foreign and domestic retailers play a key role in forming FDI's strategic market entry. Lastly, the third essay studies whether multinational enterprises affect domestic firms' markups. Since Korea liberalised retail FDI in 1996, foreign stores have proliferated over the Korean market whereas average markup of local stores has declined to a large degree. To assess the causal impact of retail FDI on domestic markups, we use the inverse propensity-score weighting regression (IPW) model combined with difference-in-difference (DD) approach. In this essay, we find that multinational retailers have a causal impact on reduction in average local markups. Through the lens of IPW and DD, we also find that the decrease in domestic markups is thoroughly driven by pro-competitive effects through the entry of foreign retailers, but productivity spillover effects induced by multinational retailers are limited. This essay also reveals that Korean large discount stores, of which scales, functions and product assortments are very similar to multinational stores, have no impact on average markups, indicating that only FDI plays a role in decline in markups.

Abstract

Nanostructured zeolite 13X, synthesized from basalt rock via alkali fusion and hydrothermal procedures, demonstrates excellent adsorption performance for light gases (CO2, CH4, N2, and H2). Its robust CO2 separation properties, evident in the adsorption capacity and selectivity order (CO2 >> CH4 > N2 >> H2). The measured adsorption isotherms fit well with the Sips equation, and heterogeneous adsorption behaviors correlate with the isosteric heat of adsorption and adsorption energy distribution. Predicted selectivities via ideal adsorbed solution theory range from 990 to 1,415 (CO2/H2), 244–360 (CO2/N2), and 135–254 (CO2/CH4), indicating significant potential for adsorptive CO2 separation. Natural-basalt-originated, nanostructured zeolite has been created for strong and selective gas adsorption characteristics useful for engineering applications including energy source creation and environmental cleaning, with the selectivity strongly correlated with polarizability. Abstract

Simple Summary: Accurate assessment of the presence and progression of bone metastases will guide individual treatment plans. Sophisticated cross-sectional imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), have gained favor due to their superior soft tissue contrast and resolution without the need for ionizing radiation. Many DWIS are available on clinical scanners, which show promise for objective assessment of bone metastases. Background: The purpose of this study is to compare turbo spin echo diffusion-weighted images in radial trajectory (BLADE DWI) with multi-shot echoplanar imaging (RESOLVE DWI) for imaging the metastatic lesion in the pelvic bone to find a correlation between ADC values and standardized uptake values (SUVs) of FDG uptake in PET/CT. The study also seeks to compare the values of metastatic lesions with those of benign bone lesions, specifically red marrow hyperplasia. Methods: The retrospective IRB-approved study included patients with bone metastasis and red marrow hyperplasia in the pelvic bone who underwent 3.0 T MRI with BLADE/RESOLVE DWI sequences and F-18 FDG PET/CT within one month. BVC (best value comparator) was used in determining the nature of bone lesions. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and standardized uptake value (SUV) were measured by a radiologist and a nuclear medicine physician. MRI image quality was graded with a Likert scale regarding the visualization of the sacroiliac joint, sacral neural foramen, hamstring tendon at ischial tuberosity, and tumor border. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and imaging time were compared between the two DWIs. Mean, peak, and maximum SUVs between metastatic and benign red marrow lesions were compared. SUVs and ADC values were compared. AUROC analyses and cut-off values were obtained for each parameter. Mann–Whitney U, Spearman's rho, and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests were applied using SPSS. Results: The final study group included 58 bone lesions (19 patients (male: female = 6:13, age 52.5 ± 9.6, forty-four (75.9%) bone metastasis, fourteen (24.1%) benign red marrow hyperplasia). ADCs from BLADE and RESOLVE were significantly higher in bone metastasis than red marrow hyperplasia. BLADE showed higher ADC values, higher anatomical scores, and higher SNR than RESOLVE DWI (p < 0.05). Imaging times were longer for BLADE than RESOLVE (6 min 3 s vs. 3 min 47 s, p < 0.05). There was a poor correlation between ADC values and SUVs (correlation coefficient from 0.04 to 0.31). The AUROC values of BLADE and RESOLVE MRI ranged from 0.892~0.995. Those of PET ranged from 0.877~0.895. The cut-off ADC values between the bone metastasis and red marrow hyperplasia were 355.0, 686.5, 531.0 for BLADE min, max, and average, respectively, and 112.5, 737.0, 273.0 for RESOLVE min, max, and average, respectively. The cut-off SUV values were 1.84, 5.01, and 3.81 for mean, peak, and max values, respectively (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Compared with RESOLVE DWI, BLADE DWI showed improved image quality of pelvic bone MRI in the aspect of anatomical depiction and SNR, higher ADC values, albeit longer imaging time. BLADE and RESOLVE could differentiate bone metastasis and red marrow hyperplasia with quantifiable cut-off values. Abstract

Prostate cancer continues to pose a global health challenge as one of the most prevalent malignancies. Mutations of the Forkhead box A1 (FOXA1) gene have been linked to unique oncogenic features in prostate cancer. In this study, we aimed to unravel the intricate molecular characteristics of FOXA1 mutant prostate cancer through comprehensive in silico analysis of transcriptomic data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). A comparison between FOXA1 mutant and control groups unearthed 1525 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), which map to eight intrinsic and six extrinsic signaling pathways. Interestingly, the majority of intrinsic pathways, but not extrinsic pathways, were validated using RNA-seq data of 22Rv1 cells from the GEO123619 dataset, suggesting complex biology in the tumor microenvironment. As a result of our in silico research, we identified novel therapeutic targets and potential drug candidates for FOXA1 mutant prostate cancer. KDM1A, MAOA, PDGFB, and HSP90AB1 emerged as druggable candidate targets, as we found that they have approved drugs throughout the drug database CADDIE. Notably, as most of the approved drugs targeting MAOA and KDM1A were monoamine inhibitors used for mental illness or diabetes, we suggest they have a potential to cure FOXA1 mutant primary prostate cancer without lethal side effects.
