Facing the challenges of a fast-growing ageing population - amidst the worldwide trends of declining birth rates and longer lifespans - the Hong Kong government has since two decades ago developed and implemented policies and plans for senior adults in Hong Kong to engage in third age learning, both formally and informally. This paper first argues for a critical need to evaluate the efficacy, adequacy and value of the policy and provision of third age learning in Hong Kong. It then discusses the choice between the functionalist approach and the critical educational gerontology (CEG) approach for a critical evaluation of the content and purpose of education for older adults. In this paper, CEG is conceived to be more comprehensive and robust than the functionalist approach that focuses primarily on learning for self-fulfillment and adjustment to older age. More broadly though, CEG views third age learning from a sociopolitical perspective and takes into account the empowering and liberating nature of learning for and by senior adults. Background: research in care home settings is often negatively focused, portraying life as sterile and devoid of meaningful experiences. Care homes have the potential to influence people's lives socially, physically and psychologically. It is important to understand what factors contribute to this.Objective: to conduct a systematic qualitative review of care home life and provide practical recommendations to enhance residents' quality of life.Methods: the following databases were searched: PsycINFO, Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. References from appropriate journals and individual articles were checked. Papers that fitted our selection criteria were selected. Two independent reviewers assessed methodological study quality. Thematic analysis and meta-ethnographic methods were adapted to synthesise findings.Results: thirty-one studies were identified. People in care homes voiced concerns about lack of autonomy and difficulty in forming appropriate relationships with others. Four key themes were identified: (i) acceptance and adaptation, (ii) connectedness with others, (iii) a homelike environment, (iv) caring practices.Conclusion: positive experiences in care homes can occur and are important for residents' quality of life. The review supports literature highlighting the need for relationship-centred approaches to care and emphasises the importance of understanding the resident's attitude towards living in care homes. This paper is based on the narratives of two groups of young Chinese immigrants who have come to Hong Kong for family reunification and who have apparently adjusted well to their new environment. It is argued that the values, beliefs, and ultimate concerns of these young immigrants have been the underlying forces behind their efforts in adjusting to the challenges in a strange land. Of particular importance are contentment and gratitude, a strong family concept, face', an urge for knowledge, a sense of crisis, faith in life, and the identity of a marginal man. These themes reflect the importance of cultural values in shaping migration behaviors. The differences found between the two groups also point to the need to understand migration experience in the context of the developmental stage as well as the social, economic and political situations at the time of migration. There is a dearth of social literature describing the comprehensive way of helping transsexuals who seek reassignment surgery. In view of this knowledge gap, this paper proposes a practice model to help transsexuals at different stages: assessment, surgery, and post-surgical follow-up. The characteristics of this practice model, its underlying theoretical framework, its focus of intervention, and the intervention at the multiple system levels (namely individual, family and organization) are described. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic condition that results in not only physical deterioration but also a spectrum of psychosocial outcomes that demand continuous adjustment and coping. Previous qualitative research into the illness experiences has been conducted mainly in Western populations, yet little is known about Chinese PD patients' adjustment. The aims of this qualitative description study were to (a) understand the illness and adjustment experiences, (b) explore the reasons for psychological distress and (c) discern the adjustment strategies adopted along the course of illness, from the perspective of Hong Kong Chinese PD patients. Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 14 patients from January to June, 2016. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Two themes emerged from the interviews: confronting the changes caused by Parkinson's disease and adjusting to living with Parkinson's disease. Participants reported experiencing turmoil due to progressive loss of functions and abilities, changes in role and identity and unattended emotional needs in the course of their illness. Considering the chronic and fluctuating nature of PD, rehabilitation programs should be applied to address not only the physical symptoms but also the psychological needs of PD patients. Background: Better understanding of interplay among symptoms, cognition and functioning in first-episode psychosis (FEP) is crucial to promoting functional recovery. Network analysis is a promising data-driven approach to elucidating complex interactions among psychopathological variables in psychosis, but has not been applied in FEP. Method: This study employed network analysis to examine inter-relationships among a wide array of variables encompassing psychopathology, premorbid and onset characteristics, cognition, subjective quality-of-life and psychosocial functioning in 323 adult FEP patients in Hong Kong. Graphical Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) combined with extended Bayesian information criterion (BIC) model selection was used for network construction. Importance of individual nodes in a generated network was quantified by centrality analyses. Results: Our results showed that amotivation played the most central role and had the strongest associations with other variables in the network, as indexed by node strength. Amotivation and diminished expression displayed differential relationships with other nodes, supporting the validity of two-factor negative symptom structure. Psychosocial functioning was most strongly connected with amotivation and was weakly linked to several other variables. Within cognitive domain, digit span demonstrated the highest centrality and was connected with most of the other cognitive variables. Exploratory analysis revealed no significant gender differences in network structure and global strength. Conclusion: Our results suggest the pivotal role of amotivation in psychopathology network of FEP and indicate its critical association with psychosocial functioning. Objectives: Research evidence has demonstrated disparities and barriers associated with mental illness, which creates challenges for individuals with mental illness to maintain physical, mental, and social health as they age. The aim of this study was to examine the meaning of aging from the perspective of individuals with mental illness and explore their motivations and challenges to adopting healthy aging lifestyles and practices. Method: Using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, interviews were conducted with 61 aging patients with mental illness aged 40 and older in community and institutional settings in Hong Kong. Results: Participants discussed the meaning of healthy aging in terms of meaningful occupation and use of time, and independence and autonomy. Motivating factors included a desire to avoid 'burdening' other people, to 'give back' to society, and gain back 'lost time'. These were connected to strategies for healthy aging, including social relationships and activities, spirituality, and healthy lifestyles. Challenges to adopting healthy aging practices included physical health difficulties and medication side effects, lack of purpose and boredom associated with daily routines and use of time, and conflicts and loss affecting family and peer relationships. Conclusion: Social and health services should be tailored to support aging individuals with mental illness and their families, addressing motivations and barriers to adopting healthy lifestyles. The present study tested the mediating role of adolescents’ emotional intelligence for the effects of family risks on adolescent adjustment in two Chinese settings, namely Hong Kong and Macau. A total of 804 Chinese adolescents (36.3% female) in Hong Kong (n = 441) and Macau (n = 363) completed a set of self-reported questionnaires. Findings based on path analysis suggested that economic stress was positively associated with family conflict. In addition, family risks including economic stress and family conflict were inversely associated with adolescents’ emotional intelligence and prosocial behaviors, and positively associated with both internalizing and externalizing problems. Bootstrapping supported emotional intelligence as a mediating mechanism between family risks and adolescent adjustment, as indexed by their prosocial behaviors, internalizing problems, and externalizing problems. Multi-group path analysis further demonstrated gender similarities in the risk and protective processes underlying adolescent adjustment. Extending the findings based on studies conducted in Western contexts, the present research indicated the detrimental effects of family stressors, including economic stress and family conflict, on adolescent functioning in Hong Kong and Macau. Psychological flexibility (PF) refers to an individual's capacity to deal with the present moment non-judgmentally and to commit to value-based actions. This study evaluated how parental PF, psychological adjustment to a child's illness, and psychological symptoms including anxiety, depression, and stress in parents are associated with asthma morbidity in children. Three-hundred and twenty-four parents of children aged 3-12 years with asthma completed a self-administered questionnaire to measure their PF, psychological adjustment, and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress, their children's asthma symptoms and their use of bronchodilators. Structural equation modeling was used to explore the relationships among these constructs. The results showed that poor PF was significantly associated with poor psychological adjustment to the child's illness and increased psychological symptoms in parents. Parental PF was found to be the only latent construct possessing a significant association with the child's asthma morbidity ( β = 0.27, 95% CI [0.09, 0.42], p = .002). In this article, the discussion of loss and its relationship to learning is based on the analysis of interview data from 39 older adults in Hong Kong and 40 in Australia. The focus of the research was on ageing and learning. The phenomenon of life changes, specifically losses, and their relationship to learning was frequently mentioned, and this theme is described here. Three different kinds of loss were identified in the data as motivators for organized or nonorganized learning or for negatively affecting learning. These included loss of aspects of health, of job, or of partner. The results are potentially useful to policy makers and learning providers in encouraging older adults to engage in learning as one way of coping with loss. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The role of disclosure on psychological well-being of adolescents with child sexual abuse experience was investigated in a subsample of 74 disclosers among 800 adolescents recruited in the community in Hong Kong. The results supported that CSA experiences have differential impact on adolescents’ psychological well-being. Family characteristics of the disclosers accounted for only a small amount of the variance in an array of psychological well-being measures. CSA characteristics were robust predictors of disclosers’ sexual eroticism and externalizing behavioral symptoms. Disclosers’ cognitive appraisal of CSA experience and quality of parental attachment were strong predictors of their self-esteem and internalizing behavioral problems. After controlling for the aforementioned factors, negative disclosure experience still significantly predicted lower self-esteem, higher sexual anxiety, more internalizing behavior, and more severe post-traumatic stress disorder responses. Research to understand the factors that generate negative disclosure experiences is needed for developing effective intervention strategies to mitigate the negative consequences of disclosure. The job satisfaction of live-in foreign domestic helpers ( FDHs) may influence their caring motivation and the quality of care they provide, which may in turn affect the health status of care recipients. This study identifies the factors affecting job satisfaction of FDHs caring for people with dementia in Hong Kong, focusing especially on the role of FDHs' adaptation status, job self-efficacy and care recipients' situation. A total of 152 FDHs taking care of people with dementia were recruited from 6 day care centres for elderly people in Hong Kong when they attended with their care recipients. Data were collected from February to August 2011 and the response rate was 95%. Participants completed questionnaires which included measures of care recipients' dementia severity and disruptive behaviours, FDHs' demographic factors, personal adaptation status, caregiving self-efficacy and job satisfaction. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to analyse the data. The results showed that longer stay in Hong Kong, better fluency in Cantonese (local dialect), greater satisfaction in living conditions, higher caregiving self-efficacy and less disruptive behaviour of care recipients were independently associated with stronger job satisfaction in FDHs looking after people with dementia. On the basis of these findings, we would suggest that employers should consider helpers who have been in Hong Kong for a longer period of time and speak fluent Cantonese, and have previous experience of taking care of people with dementia. Purpose: To test the effects of different self-efficacy beliefs on caregiver appraisals and depressive symptoms. We hypothesized that self-efficacy has a direct effect on depression while moderating the effects of behavioral problems on both negative (i.e., burden) and positive (i.e., uplifting) appraisals. Design and Methods: Ninety-nine Chinese caregivers of relatives with Alzheimer’s disease responded to measures of self-efficacy, positive gains, burden, depression, and care recipient behavioral problems. Data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and multiple regression. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis supported a 3-factor structure for the Revised Scale for Caregiving Self-Efficacy (obtaining respite, responding to disruptive behaviors, and controlling upsetting thoughts). Interaction effects in regression showed that caregivers with higher self-efficacy in controlling upsetting thoughts had more positive gains and less burden when confronted with more behavioral problems. Self-efficacy in obtaining respite had direct effects on burden and depression, and self-efficacy in responding to disruptive behaviors had a direct effect on positive gains, but not moderating effects. Implications: The results supported the multidimensional structure of caregiver self-efficacy and showed that efficacy in controlling upsetting thoughts was most important in buffering the effects of behavioral problems on burden and positive gains among Chinese caregivers. Aims. To report a study of the relations of prenatal psychosocial adaptation, social support, demographic and obstetric characteristics, uncertainty, information-seeking behaviour, motherhood normalization, self-efficacy, and commitment to pregnancy. Background. Prenatal psychosocial assessment is recommended to identify psychosocial risk factors early to prevent psychiatric morbidities of mothers and children. However, knowledge on psychosocial adaptation and its explanatory variables is inconclusive. Design. This study was non-experimental, with a cross-sectional, correlational, prospective design. Methods. The study investigated Hong Kong Chinese women during late pregnancy. Convenience sampling methods were used, with 550 women recruited from the low-risk clinics of three public hospitals. Data was collected between January-April 2007. A self-reported questionnaire was used, consisting of a number of measurements derived from an integrated framework of the Life Transition Theory and Theory of Uncertainty in Illness. Explanatory variables of psychosocial adaptation were identified using a structural equation modelling programme. Results. The four explanatory variables of the psychosocial adaptation were social support, uncertainty, self-efficacy, and commitment to pregnancy. In the established model, which had good fit indices, greater psychosocial adaptation was associated with higher social support, higher self-efficacy, higher commitment to pregnancy, and lower uncertainty. Conclusion. The findings give clinicians and midwives guidance in the aspects to focus on when providing psychosocial assessment in routine prenatal screening. Since there are insufficient reliable screening tools to assist that assessment, midwives should receive adequate training, and effective screening instruments have to be identified. Supervision is considered to be a determining factor in the quality of service to clients, the job satisfaction of social workers, and the level of professional development they achieve. How supervisors use their authority affects their relationships with subordinates, which in turn influences service outcomes. This case study reveals the micro-process of the interplay of power in the supervisor–supervisee dyad, the influence of cultural factors on attitudes toward hierarchical relationships, and subordination to authority in the supervisory dyad. Respondents who considered supervision to be counterproductive or disempowering employed tactics to hide their negative attitude, and concealed important cases and project materials, which hindered the disclosure of mistakes. Redistributing power in the current hierarchical supervisor–supervisee relationship could lead to fewer instances of game playing in the supervisory dyad and facilitate disclosure, which is important in ethical practice. Aim. This study aimed to explore the lived experience of sub-fertility among Chinese couples in Hong Kong. Background. In Chinese culture, the duty of young married couples is to bear children to carry on the family line. Married couples who are unable to bear children often experience personal psychological stress and social pressure. Design. Qualitative, exploratory study. Methods. Seven women and four men in Hong Kong were interviewed to explore their lived experiences of being involuntarily childless. Collaizi's phenomenological methods guided data collection and analysis. Results. Sub-fertile couples reported feelings of incompleteness, guilt, shame and isolation from the 'fertile' world. These couples acknowledged that sub-fertility had implications on their marital relationship and regretted not having treatment earlier. Some found ways to replace their 'loss' and to cope with their situation, and some rationalised by finding reasons that favoured being childless. Discussion. It is recommended that family planning should be incorporated into premarital screening and to provide timely support and counselling. Relevance to clinical practice. Family planning and fertility should be incorporated into premarital counselling. Sub-fertile couples should be encouraged to seek medical help, being provided with early referral for investigation and treatment and with support and counselling. Health care professionals should respect the decisions of sub-fertile couples with regard to investigations or assisted reproductive services. Through validation of the Adaptive/Maladaptive Perfectionism Scale (AMPS) (Rice & Preusser, 2002), this study examined the concept of perfectionism among Chinese elementary school students in Hong Kong. A total of 599 students from fourth to sixth grades with ages ranged from 9 to 13 years were recruited on a voluntary basis and with parental consent. They completed a Chinese translation of the AMPS consisting of 27 items. The scale taps into four dimensions of perfectionism, namely: Sensitivity to Mistakes, Contingent Self-Esteem, Compulsiveness, and Need for Admiration. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed. The results supported the AMPS subscales with moderate to high internal consistencies. However, four items were subsequently deleted due to lack of significance. The findings provide methodological and practical implications for future investigations of perfectionism among Chinese students, including those with gifts and talents - a sub-group within which perfectionism is often an issue. In-depth interviews were conducted for 203 Hong Kong Chinese in Mainland China (HIM) and 198 Mainland Chinese in Hong Kong (MIH), followed by two-level theme analyses, to examine their communication experiences and adaptation. The two groups were found to be dissimilar in terms of socioeconomic status, purpose of migration, and process of adaptation. Many HIM tended to evaluate the new environment from a “new workplace” view, mentioning adjustment and communication at workplace. Most MIH, on the other hand, used a “new home” approach, expecting a happy life with good income. The major challenge for most HIM was getting used to a less developed physical environment and an organizational culture with lower efficiency and work ethics. For most MIH, the main source of hardship came from insufficient protection for workers' rights and interests. Outcome-based education is a pedagogical process which focuses on the achievement of certain specified results. Outcome-based teaching and learning (OBTL), therefore, is concerned with curriculum design and ensuring that the contents, delivery, activities, and assessments are all aligned to help facilitate students to attain specific intended learning outcomes. This study explores whether and how outcome-based teaching impacts on the learning approaches of one cohort of undergraduate business students at a university in Hong Kong, China to undergo outcome-based teaching, newly introduced as part of a university-wide policy to adopt OBTL. The learning approaches of these business students were measured using John Biggs's (1987) Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ) to determine whether these students tended to favor surface learning approaches, deep learning approaches, or achieving learning approaches upon initial entry into the university. Changes in learning approaches were tracked, after a semester's exposure to OBTL, through survey and focus group interview methods. Findings indicated a significant amount of transference between learning approaches deployed by these students, demonstrating a high level of adaptability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To extend longitudinally an earlier study of the pathway from symptoms of emotional distress (ED) through self-efficacy (SE) and adherence to glycemic control (GC) in youths with diabetes, and to examine the contribution of different specific adherence behaviors to changes in GC.Methods: Fifty-six Hong Kong youths with diabetes received a follow-up evaluation 12-24 months after initial participation. ED, SE, self-reported adherence to medical regimen (SRA), and GC were assessed at both evaluations.Results: The pathway from ED to SE to SRA to GC was replicated. Participants' SRA to regular checks on blood glucose levels, and taking steps to maintain levels in the recommended range, explained significant variance in changes in GC.Conclusions: The model offers strategies to enhance health care in youths with diabetes. Findings support the importance of adherence to the medical regimen but emphasize the complexity of the relationship between adherence behaviors and GC. The Distinction between regulative planning based on power and generative planning based on information is examined through a case study of squatter clearance in Hong Kong. Rather than treating the two styles of planning as distinct and separate, the case material suggests the need to examine political processes that can produce generative influences on regulative planning interventions. The clearance of squatters without the provision of rehousing was transformed into the large-scale squatter resettlement program through resistance, and subsequent clearance policies have also been modified through protest and individual adaptation.
