To find a new way to slow down the release of glufosinate (GA) pesticide and to solve the susceptibility to decomposition by soil microorganisms, a series of novel antibacterial polysaccharide-based sustained release beads (PSRB) were prepared. The PSRB was prepared by immobilization of GA loaded polysaccharide-based chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (PS-HACC) microcapsules in the core and layers of the multilayer sodium alginate beads. The PSRB was characterized by FI-IR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, and BET to reveal their composition and surface morphology. The optimal conditions of the slow release beads were as follows, the concentration of Ca 2+ , pH, temperature and the coating layer number was 0.1 mol/L, 7, 25 °Cand 3, respectively. The kinetic study showed that the slow release of PSRB was in accordance with the Higuchi kinetic model, and the FI-IR and XRD analyses revealed that the PS-HACC and GA were successfully cross-linked to the PSRB. BET showed that PSRB were greater than PSRB 3 at surface area, pore volume and pore size. Inhibition circles experiments demonstrated that WPSRB 3 has good antibacterial activity. The weed control in soybean with PSRB 3 application is perfect and the weed control cycle is long. Sodium alginate (SA) is widely used in the food, biomedical, and chemical industries due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and excellent film-forming properties. This article introduces a simple method for preparing uniform alginate-based packaging materials with exceptional properties for fruit preservation. The alginate was uniformly crosslinked by gradually releasing calcium ions triggered by the sustained hydrolysis of gluconolactone (GDL). A cinnamaldehyde (CA) emulsion, stabilized by xanthan without the use of traditional surfactants, was tightly incorporated into the alginate film to enhance its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV shielding properties. The alginate-based film effectively blocked ultraviolet rays in the range of 400-200 nm, while allowing for a visible light transmittance of up to 70 %. Additionally, it showed an increased water contact angle and decreased water vapor permeability. The alginate-based film was also employed in the preparation of coated paper through the commonly used coating process in the papermaking industry. The alginate-based material displayed excellent antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea, successfully extending the shelf life of strawberries to 7 days at room temperature. 3D multifunctional scaffold has been designed based on Cs/SA/NS/NPHA. Nanoparticles hydroxyapatite (NPHA) was prepared via precipitation method of sodium dihydrogen phosphate in presence calcium chloride. Different ratios of Chitosan (CS)/Sodium Alginate (SA) were used to prepare Cs/SA scaffolds in presence of CaCl 2 as a cross linker. NPHA was incorporated in CS/SA scaffold and neomycin sulfate (NS) was added as an antimicrobial agent. The structure and surface morphology of the scaffolds were investigated via infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. Additionally, Antimicrobial activity of the scaffold has evaluated against Gram- negative and Gram- positive bacteria. The result showed promising antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Furthermore, cytotoxicity against MG63 osteosarcoma cell and fibroblast normal cell line has investigated. The result showed anti-proliferative against MG63. DFT calculations and molecular docking were used to study the reactivity of the compounds. Nowadays, the combined knowledge and experience in biomedical research and material sciences results in the innovation of smart materials that could efficiently overcome the problems of microbial contaminations. Herein, a new drug delivery platform prepared by grafting sodium alginate with β-carboxyethyl acrylate and acrylamide was described and characterized. 9-Aminoacridine (9-AA), and kanamycin sulfate (KS) were separately loaded into the hydrogel in situ during graft polymerization. The grafting efficiency for the resulting hydrogels was 70.01-78.08 %. The chemical structure of the hydrogels, thermogravimetric analysis, and morphological features were investigated. The swelling study revealed that the hydrogel without drugs achieved a superior swelling rate compared to drug-loaded hydrogels. The hydrogel tuned the drug-release rate in a pH-dependent manner. Furthermore, the antibacterial study suggested that the hydrogels encapsulating 9-AA (88.6 %) or KS (89.3 %) exhibited comparable antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Finally, the cytocompatibility study conducted on normal lung cell line (Vero cells) demonstrated neglectable to tolerable toxicity for the drug-loaded hydrogel. Despite many technical challenges in the development of safe and environmentally friendly food packaging paper materials with excellent water and oil resistance using simple methods, producing paper-based functional materials using bio-based polymers is currently an important topic in the food packaging industry. In this study, novel water and oil-resistant coatings for the paper were developed through the combination of sodium alginate (SA), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (HSNPs). To impart oil-repellency to paper, SA and HPMC were first mixed uniformly and coated on the base paper, which was pre-treated with calcium chloride solution. A compact and tough coating layer was formed on paper due to the hydrogen bonding between SA and HPMC molecules, and the crosslinking between SA and Ca 2+ ions in the base paper. High water resistance of the paper was achieved through the coating of PVB and HSNPs on top of the coating of SA/HPMC. The final coated paper demonstrated outstanding oil resistance (kit rating: 12/12), water resistance (Cobb value: 4.23 g/m 2 ), low water vapor transmission rate (100 g/m 2 ·24 h), and improved mechanical properties. Electrochemical conductive hydrogels are being extensively explored in the fabrication of portable batteries and high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, the rational design of a new polyanionic electrically conductive hydrogels based on sodium alginate-g-poly(AM-co-ECA-co-AMPS) are described. rGO was incorporated into the hydrogel during the polymerization process generating rGO@ sodium alginate-g-poly(AM-co-ECA-co-AMPS) composite hydrogels to study the impact of rGO on the performance of the hydrogels. FT-IR, XRD, and SEM-EDX characterized the chemical composition, crystalline, and morphological structure of the new synthesized hydrogels. The electrochemical performance of as-synthesized hydrogels was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic, charge-discharge rate, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The supercapacitor performance for ECH2.5 composite hydrogel showed a capacitance of 753 F. g -1 at 1 A. g -1 with good rate capability and cycling stability up to 5000 cycles. Bio sustainable hydrogels including tunable morphological and/or chemical cues currently offer a valid strategy of designing innovative systems to enhance healing/regeneration processes of damaged tissue areas. In this work, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (T-CNFs) were embedded in alginate (Alg) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution to form a stable mineralized hydrogel. A calcium chloride reaction was optimized to trigger a crosslinking reaction of polymer chains and mutually promote in situ mineralization of calcium phosphates. FTIR, XRD, SEM/EDAX, and TEM were assessed to investigate the morphological, chemical, and physical properties of different mineralized hybrid hydrogels, confirming differences in the deposited crystalline nanostructures, i.e., dicalcium phosphate dehydrate (DCPDH) and hydroxyapatite, respectively, as a function of applied pH conditions (i.e., pH 4 or 8). Moreover, in vitro tests, in the presence of HFB-4 and HSF skin cells, confirmed a low cytotoxicity of the mineralized hybrid hydrogels, and also highlighted a significant increase in cell viability via MTT tests, preferentially, for the low concentration, crosslinked Alg/PVA/calcium phosphate hybrid materials (<1 mg/mL) in the presence of hydroxyapatite. These preliminary results suggest a promising use of mineralized hybrid hydrogels based on Alg/PVA/T-CNFs for bone and wound healing applications.

Hydrogels derived from natural polymers have received great attention, but their practical applications are severely hindered by the relatively poor mechanical properties. In this work, cellulose nanofibril (CNF) was used as a crosslinker to reinforce the sodium alginate (SA)/chitosan (CS) hydrogels for drug sustained release. The CNF was prepared via a combined process of ball milling and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) pretreatment and characterized using SEM, FT-IR, and XRD. Furthermore, the microstructure, mechanical/biological properties and swelling performance of SA/CS/CNF hydrogels were investigated. Results showed that 1.0 wt% CNF addition led to the increases of 23.6% in storage modulus and 54.4% in loss modulus for the SA/CS/CNF hydrogels, indicating that CNF addition was effective in reinforcing the three-dimensional entangled networks of the hydrogels. Moreover, the presence of CNF was found to weaken the swelling performance of SA/CS/CNF hydrogels. When the synthesized SA/CS/CNF hydrogel with 1.0 wt% CNF was applied as a carrier for drug release, 50.8% reduction in the release rate in simulated gastric juice was achieved, demonstrating its outstanding sustained release properties. Packaging is as important as the product itself because it is a crucial marketing and communication tool for business. Oxidized nanocellulose (ONC), extracted from agriculture residues of bagasse raw material using ecofriendly ammonium persulfate hydrolysis method, is used as support/reducing agent for the generation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via photochemical procedure and reinforcing element in paper functionalization. The natural polymer, sodium alginate (SA) is exploited to enhance the binding of the ONC-AgNPs over cellulose fibers. The SA/ONC-AgNPs bio-nanocomposite is incorporated on paper matrix, which represents a more suitable choice respect to other substrates for its renewable, biocompatible, biodegradable, and cost-effective properties. In this work, sodium alginate (SA) based "all-natural" composite bio-sponges were designed for potential application as wound care scaffold. The composite bio-sponges were developed from the aqueous amalgamation of SA and cellulose nanofibres (CNFs) in bio-extracts like Rice water (Rw) and Giloy extract (Ge). These sponges were modified by employing a simple coating strategy using vegetable oil-based bio-polyurethane (BioPU) to tailor their physicochemical and biological properties so as to match the specific requirements of a wound care scaffold. Bio-sponges with shared interpenetrating polymeric network structures were attained at optimized BioPU coating formulation. The interpenetration of BioPU chains within the sponge construct resulted in the formation of numerous micro-networks in the interconnected microporous structure of sponges (porosity ≥75%). The coated sponge showed a superior mechanical strength (compressive strength ~3.8 MPa, compressive modulus ~35 MPa) with appreciable flexibility and recoverability under repeated compressive loading-unloading cycles. A tunable degradation behaviour was achieved by varying BioPU coating concentrations owing to the different degree of polymer chain entanglement within the sponge construct. The physical entanglement of BioPU chains with core structural components of sponge improved their structural stability by suppressing their full fragmentation in water-based medium without affecting its swelling behaviour (swelling ratio > 1000%). The coated sponge surface has provided a suitable moist-adherent physical environment to support the adhesion and growth of skin cells (HaCaT cells). The MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay and hemolytic assay revealed the non-toxic and biocompatible nature of coated sponges in vitro. Moreover, no signs of skin erythema or edema were observed during in vivo dermal irritation and corrosion test performed on the skin of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. This paper reports the manufacturing by 3D printing of scaffolds for in-situ mineralization of hydroxyapatite using aqueous suspensions of alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-grafted cellulose nanofibers (CNF). Bifunctional CNF with carboxyl and aldehyde moieties were prepared from bleached bagasse pulp and crosslinked with PVA. Aqueous hydrogels for 3D printing were prepared by directly mixing PVA-grafted CNF with sodium alginate, with and without the addition of phosphate ions. A calcium chloride solution was sprayed during the printing process in order to partially crosslink alginate and to increase the dimensional stability of the printed gel. At the end of the printing process, the prepared scaffolds were dipped into a CaCl 2 solution to: i) complete alginate crosslinking and ii) promote hydroxyapatite nucleation and growth by reaction with phosphate ions. In order to better understand the mechanisms governing manufacturing of scaffolds by 3D printing, the rheological behavior of alginate/PVA-grafted CNF and the mechanical properties of unit filaments obtained by direct hydrogel extrusion were investigated. The final scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In this study, the immobilization technology was used to improve the LA yield and shorten the fermentation time. The optimum conditions to immobilize Lactobacillus pentosus ATCC 8041 cell were determined by Taguchi design L16 (4 5 ). The immobilized L. pentosus ATCC 8041 cells prepared by 2% sodium alginate (SA) and 6% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with the immobilization process by 0.10 M calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and 2.5% boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ) had the best performance of LA yield at the temperature of 35 °C, which is significantly higher than that of L. pentosus ATCC 8041 free cells. These cells maintained the stable and efficient performance in 15 repeated batch fermentation, and they also have excellent mechanical strength to keep from breakage caused by cell growth and agitation.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is an exciting class of sustainable and carbohydrate material, which has great potential applications in molecular adsorption. However, the complex preparation process and limited adsorption capacity of CNCs hinder its commercial application. In this study, we design a novel functional cellulose nanocrystals-based adsorbent by an ingenious mixing of lignin-containing cellulose nanocrystals (LCNCs), sodium alginate (SA), and calcium chloride solution. Benefiting from the sulfonate groups of lignin, carboxyl groups of SA, the maximum adsorptive capability of LCNCs/SA beads for methylene blue was found to be 1181 mg g -1 , which was significantly higher than previously reported biomass-based adsorbents. More importantly, LCNCs/SA beads can be reused several times. As a kind of potential absorbent, polysaccharide materials are limited due to weak stability, low absorption and recovery rate. Herein, a novel composite adsorbent - the magnetic composite gel beads (CMC/SA/graphene oxide@Fe 3 O 4 ) were prepared by combining carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), sodium alginate (SA) with graphene oxide@Fe 3 O 4 , and then utilized for the adsorption of Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ from the wastewater. The physicochemical property of CMC/SA/graphene oxide@Fe 3 O 4 beads were characterized in detail. The CMC/SA/graphene oxide@Fe 3 O 4 magnetic gel beads could separate easily from the wastewater and showed a higher stability due to the addition of graphene oxide@Fe 3 O 4 . The adsorption experiments show that the adsorption of Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ on the magnetic gel bead was well fitted with pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ reached 55.96, 86.28 and 189.04 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the magnetic gel beads had selective adsorption toward Pb 2+ . In addition, the magnetic gel beads still obtained 90% of the adsorption rates after five cycles, and showed good adsorption efficiency in the simulated real environment. The three-dimensional (3D) printed scaffolds were prepared by partial cross-linking of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril/alginate hydrogel using calcium ions for printing the hydrogel while maintaining its shape, fidelity, and preventing the collapse of the filaments. The prepared scaffolds were fully cross-linked using calcium ions immediately after printing to provide the rigidity of the hydrogel and give it long-term stability. The composition of the prepared pastes was adjusted in view of the description of the hydrogel and 3D printing parameters. The rheological properties in terms of thixotropic behavior and viscosity recovery of hydrogels were investigated by performing steady shear rate experiments. The results show that the viscosity recovery for pure alginate hydrogel was only about 16% of the initial value, whereas it was 66% when adding cellulose nanofibrils to alginate. Consequently, the shape of the pure alginate scaffold was soft and easy to collapse contrarily to the composite scaffold. The biomimetic mineralization process of printed scaffolds using simulated body fluid, mimicking the inorganic composition of human blood plasma, was performed and the hydroxyapatite nucleation on the hydrogel was confirmed. The strength properties of the fabricated scaffolds in terms of compressive strength analysis were also investigated and discussed. The results show that the alginate/TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril system may be a promising 3D printing scaffold for bone tissue engineering.

Probiotic (Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 9595) was encapsulated in alginate-CNC-lecithin microbeads to produce nutraceutical microcapsules. Addition of CNC and lecithin in alginate microbeads (ACL-1) improved the viability of L. rhamnosus during gastric passage and storage. The compression strength of the freeze-dried ACL-1 microbeads improved 40% compared to alginate microbeads alone. Swelling studies revealed that addition of CNC and lecithin in alginate microbeads decreased (around 47%) the gastric fluid absorption but increased the dissolution time by 20min compared to alginate microbeads (A-0). During transition through the gastric passage, the viability of L. rhamnosus in dried ACL-1 microbeads was increased 37% as compared to A-0 based beads. At 25 and 4°C storage conditions, the viability of L. rhamnosus encapsulated in ACL-1 microbeads decreased by 1.23 and 1.08 log respectively, whereas the encapsulation with A-0 microbeads exhibited a 3.17 and 1.93 log reduction respectively., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Two-dimensional (2D) culture systems do not represent the native microenvironment of the cells which is known to be three dimensional (3D), and surrounded by other cells from all directions. There exist interactions with other cell types in the same vicinity and this also cannot be replicated in a 2D culture. To study the cell-cell interactions between two or more cell types and their biological functions, a few 3D models have been used by different investigators. We have designed a 3D model to investigate the cell-cell interactions between various types of ovarian cells. The same model was also used to study the interactions between prostate cancer epithelial cells and stromal cells. This model uses hydrogel as the anchor matrix to fabricate the constructs and microencapsulation techniques to design multilayered microcapsules. In these multilayer microcapsules the different types of cells are compartmentalized by a sequential encapsulation process. In this chapter, we provide the protocol to compartmentalize two cell types in the same multilayer microcapsules. Although this chapter describes the fabrication of multilayer microcapsules with ovarian cells, the same approach could be applied to other multi-cell tissue-engineered constructs that require cell-cell interactions.

This work reported chitosan derivatives (CSD)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) blending with alginate to prepare hydrogel beads for small-molecule drug delivery for the first time. At the beginning, graphene oxide (GO) was successfully reduced using diverse CSD as reducing and stabilizing agents via facile heating. Then the obtained CSD/rGO was blended with alginate and crosslinked into hydrogel beads in CaCl2 solution. Finally, the beads were systematically evaluated as novel vehicles for pH-responsive small-molecule drug delivery. The optimal CSD/rGO/alginate beads showed a high drug-loading efficiency of 82.8% on small-molecule fluorescein sodium (FL), outstanding sustainable release of 71.6% upon 150h at a physiological pH and quick-release of 82.4% drug content at 20h in an acidic medium. Additionally, the cytotoxicity assay result suggested that the CSD/rGO/alginate beads showed negligible cytotoxicity to hepatic stellate cell lines, opening up possibilities for safe and efficient drug delivery., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. In the present study the effect of process (homogenization speed) and formulation (polymer-alginate-concentration, surfactant concentration, drug amount, perfluorohexane volume fraction and co-surfactant inclusion) variables on particle size, entrapment efficiency, and drug release kinetics of doxorubicin-loaded alginate stabilized perfluorohexane nanodroplets were evaluated. Particle size and doxorubicin entrapment efficiency were highly affected by formulation and process variables. Increase in homogenization speed resulted in significant decrease in particle size and increase in entrapment efficiency. Polymer concentration and perfluorohexane amount both had similar effect on particle size. Particle size increased by an increase in the amount of both. Entrapment efficiency increased by increasing polymer concentration. In case of surfactant concentration and drug amount, particle size and entrapment efficiency had optimum values and an increase in concentration of both of them behind a certain limit resulted in increase in particle size and decrease in doxorubicin entrapment. In vitro release profile of doxorubicin was an apparently biphasic release process and 7%-13% of drug released after 24h incubation in PBS, pH=7.4, depending on the nanodroplets composition but ultrasound exposure for 10min resulted in triggered release of 85.95% of doxorubicin from optimal formulation (formulation E1 with 39.2nm diameter size and 92.2% entrapment efficiency)., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Factors controlling the time-dependent mechanical properties of interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel materials are not well understood. In this study, alginate-polyacrylamide IPN were synthesized to mimic the stress relaxation behavior and elastic modulus of porcine muscle tissue. Hydrogel samples were created with single-parameter chemical concentration variations from a baseline formula to establish trends. The concentration of total monomer material had the largest effect on the elastic modulus, while concentration of the acrylamide cross-linker, N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBAA), changed the stress relaxation behavior most effectively. The IPN material was then tuned to mimic the mechanical response of muscle tissue using these trends. Swelling the hydrogel samples to equilibrium resulted in a dramatic decrease in both elastic modulus and stress relaxation behavior. Collectively, the results demonstrate that alginate-polyacrylamide IPN hydrogels can be tuned to closely mimic both the elastic and the viscoelastic behaviors of muscle tissue, although swelling detrimentally affects these desired properties.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has been proved to be a promising nitrogen removal method for treating ammonium-rich wastewater. However, because of the low-growth rate of anammox bacteria, maintenance of a sufficient amount of anammox biomass in reactor became a key factor in application. Gel immobilization is an efficient method to prevent biomass from being washed out and to promote hyper-concentrated cultures. This study focused on a nitrogen removal process by anammox enrichment culture immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate (PVA-SA) gel beads. The rapid startup of reactor demonstrated that gel entrapment was supposed to be a highly effective technique for immobilizing anammox bacteria. The anammox bacteria present in the enrichment were identified to be Jettenia-like species (>98%). Moreover, the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT), pH, and temperature on immobilized anammox processes were investigated. The effect of pH and temperature on the anammox process was evidently weakened in PVA-SA immobilized gel beads, however, the effect of HRT on the anammox reaction was enhanced. Therefore, a stable operated reactor could be obtained in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor, which proved gel immobilization was an excellent method to maintain the biomass in anammox reactor for application.

Topo-optical staining reactions were used to investigate the structures of bacterial cellulose, insect chitosan and alginic acid from brown algae. Polysaccharide complexes, glycosaminoglycans and sulfate groups were presented and demonstrated selectively. Chitosan and alginic acid are structurally similar to glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are constituents of human amyloid fibrils. The staining sequences shown can be used as reliable methods for histochemistry with light and polarization microscopy. Drug-delivery systems, using natural drug carriers, have become increasingly important because of their nontoxicity and biodegradability. In this study, firstly, quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC) was intercalated into the interlayer of organic montmorillonite (OMMT) to obtain the QCMC/OMMT nanocomposites, their structure, morphology, and thermal stability were investigated. Next, crosslinked alginate/QCMC/OMMT (AQCOM) microsphere was obtained by crosslinking with CaCl2, and the drug-controlled release behavior was evaluated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as model drug. The results suggested that, carboxyl groups in alginate and QCMC crosslinked with Ca(2+), quaternary ammonium groups in QCMC or OMMT electrostatically interacted with carboxyl groups in alginate, and there was stable three-dimensional network in AQCOM microsphere. The swelling ratio of AQCOM microspheres decreased with the increase of OMMT content, the lowest one was only about 45% compared to the microsphere without OMMT of 197%. Besides, the in vitro release results for BSA indicated that the AQCOM microsphere displayed more excellent encapsulation and controlled release capacities than the microsphere without OMMT. The in vitro active cutaneous anaphylaxis test was carried out on Guinea pigs, which revealed that AQCOM microsphere did not cause anaphylaxis. Therefore, QCMC/OMMT nanocomposites from natural materials are considerably suitable to apply as drug-controlled release carriers.

Crosslinked polysaccharide sponges have been prepared by freeze-drying of amorphous alginate-oxidized nanocellulose in the presence of a Ca(2+) ionic crosslinking agent. The new carboxyl groups on the surface of nanocellulose induced by the chemical oxidization provided the possibility of participating in the construction of an alginate-based sponge's structure and played a fundamental role in the structural and mechanical stability of ensuing sponges. Furthermore, enhanced mechanical strength induced by oxidized cellulose nanocrystals and the formation of a semi-interpenetrating polymer network from oxidized microfibrillated cellulose were reported. Together with the facile and ionic crosslinking process, the ultrahigh porosity, promising water absorption and retention, as well as the improved compression strength of the crosslinked sponges should significantly extend the use of this soft material in diverse practical applications.
