In response to the challenges posed by small objects in remote sensing images, such as low resolution, complex backgrounds, and severe occlusions, this paper proposes a lightweight improved model based on YOLOv8n. During the detection of small objects, the feature fusion part of the YOLOv8n algorithm retrieves relatively fewer features of small objects from the backbone network compared to large objects, resulting in low detection accuracy for small objects. To address this issue, firstly, this paper adds a dedicated small object detection layer in the feature fusion network to better integrate the features of small objects into the feature fusion part of the model. Secondly, the SSFF module is introduced to facilitate multi-scale feature fusion, enabling the model to capture more gradient paths and further improve accuracy while reducing model parameters. Finally, the HPANet structure is proposed, replacing the Path Aggregation Network with HPANet. Compared to the original YOLOv8n algorithm, the recognition accuracy of mAP@0.5 on the VisDrone data set and the AI-TOD data set has increased by 14.3% and 17.9%, respectively, while the recognition accuracy of mAP@0.5:0.95 has increased by 17.1% and 19.8%, respectively. The proposed method reduces the parameter count by 33% and the model size by 31.7% compared to the original model. Aiming at the characteristics of remote sensing images such as a complex background, a large number of small targets, and various target scales, this paper presents a remote sensing image target detection algorithm based on improved YOLOv8. First, in order to extract more information about small targets in images, we add an extra detection layer for small targets in the backbone network; second, we propose a C2f-E structure based on the Efficient Multi-Scale Attention Module (EMA) to enhance the network's ability to detect targets of different sizes; and lastly, Wise-IoU is used to replace the CIoU loss function in the original algorithm to improve the robustness of the model. Using our improved algorithm for the detection of multiple target categories in the DOTAv1.0 dataset, the mAP@0.5 value is 82.7%, which is 1.3% higher than that of the original YOLOv8 algorithm. Visible satellite imagery is widely used by operational weather forecast centers for tropical and extratropical cyclone analysis and marine forecasting. The absence of visible imagery at night can significantly degrade forecast capabilities, such as determining tropical cyclone center locations or tracking warm-topped convective clusters. This paper documents ProxyVis imagery, an infrared-based proxy for daytime visible imagery developed to address the lack of visible satellite imagery at night and the limitations of existing nighttime visible options. ProxyVis was trained on the VIIRS day/night band imagery at times close to the full moon using VIIRS IR channels with closely matching GOES-16/17/18, Himawari-8/9, and Meteosat-9/10/11 channels. The final operational product applies the ProxyVis algorithms to geostationary satellite data and combines daytime visible and nighttime ProxyVis data to create full-disk animated GeoProxyVis imagery. The simple versions of the ProxyVis algorithm enable its generation from earlier GOES and Meteosat satellite imagery. ProxyVis offers significant improvement over existing operational products for tracking nighttime oceanic low-level clouds. Further, it is qualitatively similar to visible imagery for a wide range of backgrounds and synoptic conditions and phenomena, enabling forecasters to use it without special training. ProxyVis was first introduced to National Hurricane Center (NHC) operations in 2018 and was found to be extremely useful by forecasters becoming part of their standard operational satellite product suite in 2019. Currently, ProxyVis implemented for GOES-16/18, Himawari-9, and Meteosat-9/10/11 is being used in operational settings and evaluated for transition to operations at multiple NWS offices and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Significance Statement: This paper describes ProxyVis imagery, a new method for combining infrared channels to qualitatively mimic daytime visible imagery at nighttime. ProxyVis demonstrates that a simple linear regression can combine just a few commonly available infrared channels to develop a nighttime proxy for visible imagery that significantly improves a forecaster's ability to track low-level oceanic clouds and circulation features at night, works for all current geostationary satellites, and is useful across a wide range of backgrounds and meteorological scenarios. With satellite quantity and quality development in recent years, remote sensing products in vast areas are becoming widely used in more and more fields. The acquisition of large regional images requires the scientific and efficient utilization of satellite resources through imaging satellite task planning technology. However, for imaging satellite task planning in a vast area, a large number of decision variables are introduced into the imaging satellite task planning model, making it difficult for existing optimization algorithms to obtain reliable solutions. This is because the search space of the solution increases the exponential growth with the increase in the number of decision variables, which causes the search performance of optimization algorithms to decrease significantly. This paper proposes a large-scale multi-objective optimization algorithm based on efficient competition learning and improved non-dominated sorting (ECL-INS-LMOA) to efficiently obtain satellite imaging schemes for large areas. ECL-INS-LMOA adopted the idea of two-stage evolution to meet the different needs in different evolutionary stages. In the early stage, the proposed efficient competitive learning particle update strategy (ECLUS) and the improved NSGA-II were run alternately. In the later stage, only the improved NSGA-II was run. The proposed ECLUS guarantees the rapid convergence of ECL-INS-LMOA in the early evolution by accelerating particle update, introducing flight time, and proposing a binary competitive swarm optimizer BCSO. The results of the simulation imaging experiments on five large areas with different scales of decision variables show that ECL-INS-LMOA can always obtain the imaging satellite mission planning scheme with the highest regional coverage and the lowest satellite resource consumption within the limited evaluation times. In this paper, a multiscale Markov framework is proposed in order to address the problem of the classification of multiresolution and multisensor remotely sensed data. The proposed framework makes use of a quadtree to model the interactions across different spatial resolutions and a Markov model with respect to a generic total order relation to deal with contextual information at each scale in order to favor applicability to very high resolution imagery. The methodological properties of the proposed hierarchical framework are investigated. Firstly, we prove the causality of the overall proposed model, a particularly advantageous property in terms of computational cost of the inference. Secondly, we prove the expression of the marginal posterior mode criterion for inference on the proposed framework. Within this framework, a specific algorithm is formulated by defining, within each layer of the quadtree, a Markov chain model with respect to a pixel scan that combines both a zig-zag trajectory and a Hilbert space-filling curve. Data collected by distinct sensors at the same spatial resolution are fused through gradient boosted regression trees. The developed algorithm was experimentally validated with two very high resolution datasets including multispectral, panchromatic and radar satellite images. Morphological processing has found several applications in image analysis and pattern recognition. Some of these techniques, known as morphological reconstruction algorithms, have been employed for land cover classification in remote sensing data. In this paper, we analyse the mathematical foundations, applications, and limitations of reconstruction by dilation and by erosion oriented to urban extraction, using Sentinel-2 satellite data. Different techniques oriented to the proper determination of the marker and mask images, the basis for reconstruction, are proposed in this manuscript. In addition, in order to diminish the long computation time required for reconstruction, two parallel implementations using Multi-core and GPU, are proposed. According to our research, these algorithms can be considered as effective and non-supervised solutions for urban extraction applications based on multispectral satellite imagery. Nowadays, different image pansharpening methods are available, which combine the strengths of different satellite images that have different spectral and spatial resolutions. These different image fusion methods, however, add spectral and spatial distortions to the resultant images depending on the required context. Therefore, a careful selection of the fusion method is required. Simultaneously, it is also essential that the fusion technique should be efficient to cope with the large data. In this paper, we investigated how different pansharpening algorithms perform, when applied to very high-resolution WorldView-3 and QuickBird satellite images effectively and efficiently. We compared these 27 pansharpening techniques in terms of quantitative analysis, visual inspection and computational complexity, which has not previously been formally tested. Aircraft detection in remote sensing imagery has drawn much attention in recent years, which plays an important role in various military and civil applications. While many advanced works have been developed with powerful learning algorithms in natural images, there still lacks an effective one to detect aircraft precisely in remote sensing images, especially in some complicated conditions. In this paper, a novel method is designed to detect aircraft precisely, named aircraft detection using Centre-based Proposal regions and Invariant Features (CPIF), which can handle some difficult image deformations, especially rotations. Our framework mainly contains three steps. Firstly, we propose an algorithm to extract proposal regions from remote sensing imagery. Secondly, an ensemble learning classifier with the rotation-invariant HOG is trained for aircraft classification. Lastly, we detect aircraft in remote sensing images by combining the products of the above steps. The proposed method is evaluated on a public dataset RSOD and the results are performed to demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods. In order to solve the problem that irregular targets and dense targets are difficult to be detected in optical remote sensing images, this paper improved the YOLOV3 model Firstly, in order to further combine the feature information of different scales, the PaNet structure is introduced into the FPN part of the original YOLOv3, and the obtained effective feature layer is continued to be extracted for a round of feature. TSM is an essential parameter as it affects the biogeochemistry of the ocean. The high TSM range affects light penetration that's related to the photosynthesis of primary producers. The aim is to develop a TSM algorithm in Gujarat coastal water using remote sensing reflectance (Rrs), to monitor TSM concentration from the satellite. Seawater sampling and HyperOCR radiometer data collection were carried out in the northeast Arabian Sea. The high suspended matter was observed near the Gulf of Khambhat due to industries and riverine fluxes. For an accurate TSM algorithm, we compared the developed algorithm to previous studies. The TSM algorithm has been developed using the Rrs681/Rrs490 band ratio that has the highest linear correlation (R2 = 0.977, MSE = 19.06). Rrs band ratios demonstrated better compared to single Rrs bands. Satellite images were generated by applying the developed algorithm with the input of Rrs681 and Rrs490 from OLCI. The developed algorithm has been validated successfully with in situ TSM data points, collected across the Daman, Porbandar, and Okha coastal waters. The study indicates that the developed algorithm can be more robust and valuable for various satellite-based synoptic mapping of TSM, including the future Indian Oceansat-3 OCM mission. With the continuing increase in the number of images collected everyday from different sensors, the automated registration of multisensor/multispectral images has become a very important issue. This is particularly true when pre- and postevent image comparison is concerned: For this particular application, the requirement of obtaining the earliest possible postevent image imposes the use of data potentially possessing significantly different characteristics with respect to the pre-event image. Strongly inhomogeneous image pairs require robust automatic registration techniques, preferably based on resolutionindependent feature-based registration. In a previous paper, we proposed a mode-based feature-matching scheme mutated from the computer vision domain and adapted to pre- and postevent feature matching. Some of the weak points highlighted in that first version are addressed in this paper, where a new version of the method is proposed, which exploits a new piece of information, i.e., the adjacency between feature points, generally preserved across the disaster event. Extensive generation of synthetic cases allowed one to obtain significant feedback and, consequently, tune the algorithm. The goal of a remote-sensing system is to gather data about the geography it is imaging. In order to gain knowledge of the Earth's landscape, analysts develop postprocessing algorithms to extract information from the collected data. The algorithms are designed for a variety of application areas such as the following: the classification of various ground covers in a scene, the identification of specific targets of interest, or the detection of anomalies in an image. Traditional algorithm testing uses sets of extensively ground-truthed test images. However, the lack of well-characterized test data sets, as well as the significant cost and time issues associated with assembling the data sets, contributes to the limitations of this approach. This paper uses a synthetic-image-generation model in cooperation with a factorialdesigned experiment to create a family of images with which to rigorously test the performance of hyperspectral algorithms. The factorial-designed experimental approach allowed the joint effects of the sensor's view angle, time of day, atmospheric visibility, and the size of the targets to be studied with respect to algorithm performance. A head-to-head performance comparison of the two tested spectral processing algorithms was also made. Accurate tree-cover estimates are useful in deriving above-ground biomass density estimates from very high resolution (VHR) satellite imagery data. Numerous algorithms have been designed to perform tree-cover delineation in high-to-coarse-resolution satellite imagery, but most of them do not scale to terabytes of data, typical in these VHR data sets. In this paper, we present an automated probabilistic framework for the segmentation and classification of 1-m VHR data as obtained from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) for deriving tree-cover estimates for the whole of Continental United States, using a high-performance computing architecture. The results from the classification and segmentation algorithms are then consolidated into a structured prediction framework using a discriminative undirected probabilistic graphical model based on conditional random field, which helps in capturing the higher order contextual dependence relations between neighboring pixels. Once the final probability maps are generated, the framework is updated and retrained by incorporating expert knowledge through the relabeling of misclassified image patches. This leads to a significant improvement in the true positive rates and reduction in false positive rates (FPRs). The tree-cover maps were generated for the state of California, which covers a total of 11 095 NAIP tiles and spans a total geographical area of 163 696 sq. miles. Our framework produced correct detection rates of around 88% for fragmented forests and 74% for urban tree-cover areas, with FPRs lower than 2% for both regions. Comparative studies with the National Land-Cover Data algorithm and the LiDAR high-resolution canopy height model showed the effectiveness of our algorithm for generating accurate high-resolution tree-cover maps. Segmentation of real-world remote sensing images is challenging because of the large size of those data, particularly for very high resolution imagery. However, a lot of high-level remote sensing methods rely on segmentation at some point and are therefore difficult to assess at full image scale, for real remote sensing applications. In this paper, we define a new property called stability of segmentation algorithms and demonstrate that piece- or tile-wise computation of a stable segmentation algorithm can be achieved with identical results with respect to processing the whole image at once. We also derive a technique to empirically estimate the stability of a given segmentation algorithm and apply it to four different algorithms. Among those algorithms, the mean-shift algorithm is found to be quite unstable. We propose a modified version of this algorithm enforcing its stability and thus allowing for tile-wise computation with identical results. The monitoring of top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance time series provides useful information regarding the long-term degradation of satellite sensors. For a precise assessment of sensor degradation, the TOA reflectance time series is usually corrected for surface and atmospheric anisotropy by using bidirectional reflectance models so that the angular effects do not compromise the trend estimates. However, the models sometimes fail to correct the angular effects, particularly for spectral bands that exhibit a large seasonal oscillation due to atmospheric variability. This paper investigates the use of time series algorithms to identify both the angular effects and the atmospheric variability simultaneously in the time domain using their periodical patterns within the time series. Two nonstationary time series algorithms were tested with the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper time series data acquired over two pseudoinvariant desert sites, the Sonoran and Libyan Deserts, to compute a precise long-term trend of the time series by removing the seasonal variability. The trending results of the time series algorithms were compared to those of the original TOA reflectance time series and those normalized by a widely used bidirectional-reflectance-distribution-function model. The time series results showed an effective removal of seasonal oscillation, caused by angular and atmospheric effects, producing trending results that have a higher statistical significance than other approaches. Remote sensing (RS) scene classification is important for RS imagery semantic interpretation. Although tremendous strides have been made in RS scene classification, one of the remaining open challenges is recognizing RS scenes in low quality variance (e.g., various scales and noises). This paper proposes a deep salient feature based anti-noise transfer network (DSFATN) method that effectively enhances and explores the high-level features for RS scene classification in different scales and noise conditions. In DSFATN, a novel discriminative deep salient feature (DSF) is introduced by saliency-guided DSF extraction, which conducts a patch-based visual saliency (PBVS) algorithm using "visual attention" mechanisms to guide pre-trained CNNs for producing the discriminative high-level features. Then, an anti-noise network is proposed to learn and enhance the robust and anti-noise structure information of RS scene by directly propagating the label information to fully-connected layers. A joint loss is used to minimize the anti-noise network by integrating anti-noise constraint and a softmax classification loss. The proposed network architecture can be easily trained with a limited amount of training data. The experiments conducted on three different scale RS scene datasets show that the DSFATN method has achieved excellent performance and great robustness in different scales and noise conditions. It obtains classification accuracy of 98.25%, 98.46%, and 98.80%, respectively, on the UC Merced Land Use Dataset (UCM), the Google image dataset of SIRI-WHU, and the SAT-6 dataset, advancing the state-of-the-art substantially. Fluctuations in environmental parameters are increasingly being recognized as essential features of any habitat. The quantification of whether environmental fluctuations are prevalently predictable or unpredictable is remarkably relevant to understanding the evolutionary responses of organisms. However, when characterizing the relevant features of natural habitats, ecologists typically face two problems: (1) gathering long-term data and (2) handling the hard-won data. This paper takes advantage of the free access to long-term recordings of remote sensing data (27 years, Landsat TM/ETM+) to assess a set of environmental models for estimating environmental predictability. The case study included 20 Mediterranean saline ponds and lakes, and the focal variable was the water-surface area. This study first aimed to produce a method for accurately estimating the water-surface area from satellite images. Saline ponds can develop salt-crusted areas that make it difficult to distinguish between soil and water. This challenge was addressed using a novel pipeline that combines band ratio water indices and the short near-infrared band as a salt filter. The study then extracted the predictable and unpredictable components of variation in the water-surface area. Two different approaches, each showing variations in the parameters, were used to obtain the stochastic variation around a regular pattern with the objective of dissecting the effect of assumptions on predictability estimations. The first approach, which is based on Colwell’s predictability metrics, transforms the focal variable into a nominal one. The resulting discrete categories define the relevant variations in the water-surface area. In the second approach, we introduced General Additive Model (GAM) fitting as a new metric for quantifying predictability. Both approaches produced a wide range of predictability for the studied ponds. Some model assumptions–which are considered very different a priori–had minor effects, whereas others produced predictability estimations that showed some degree of divergence. We hypothesize that these diverging estimations of predictability reflect the effect of fluctuations on different types of organisms. The fluctuation analysis described in this manuscript is applicable to a wide variety of systems, including both aquatic and non-aquatic systems, and will be valuable for quantifying and characterizing predictability, which is essential within the expected global increase in the unpredictability of environmental fluctuations. We advocate that a priori information for organisms of interest should be used to select the most suitable metrics for estimating predictability, and we provide some guidelines for this approach. With the rapid development of remote sensing technology, satellite remote sensing images have been involved in many areas of people's lives. Remote sensing images contain military secrets, land profiles, and other sensitive data, so it is urgent to encrypt remote sensing images. This paper proposes a dual-channel key transmission model. The plaintext related key is embedded into the ciphertext image through bit-level key hiding transmission strategy, which enhanced the ability of ciphertext image to resist known-plaintext attack and chosen plaintext attack. In addition, a multiband remote sensing image encryption algorithm based on Boolean cross-scrambling and semi-tensor product diffusion is designed. Firstly, the pixel positions of each band of the remote sensing image are disturbed. Then, the random sequence generated by the four-dimensional chaotic system is processed and deformed to obtain a Boolean matrix. Based on the generated Boolean matrix and certain rules, the cross-confusion between the bands is carried out. Finally, the semi-tensor product operation is used in the diffusion process. Simulation results and experimental analysis show that the proposed algorithm obtains a larger key space and has stronger antiattack ability than other remote sensing image encryption algorithms. Recent years have witnessed an increased interest towards compression-based methods and their applications to remote sensing, as these have a data-driven and parameter-free approach and can be thus succesfully employed in several applications, especially in image information mining. This paper expands the algorithmic information theory frame, on which these methods are based. On the one hand, algorithms originally defined in the pattern matching domain are reformulated, allowing a better understanding of the available compression-based tools for remote sensing applications. In this paper, a novel subpixel mapping algorithm based on an adaptive differential evolution (DE) algorithm, namely, adaptive-DE subpixel mapping (ADESM), is developed to perform the subpixel mapping task for remote sensing images. Subpixel mapping may provide a fine-resolution map of class labels from coarser spectral unmixing fraction images, with the assumption of spatial dependence. In ADESM, to utilize DE, the subpixel mapping problem is transformed into an optimization problem by maximizing the spatial dependence index. The traditional DE algorithm is an efficient and powerful population-based stochastic global optimizer in continuous optimization problems, but it cannot be applied to the subpixel mapping problem in a discrete search space. In addition, it is not an easy task to properly set control parameters in DE. To avoid these problems, this paper utilizes an adaptive strategy without user-defined parameters, and a reversible-conversion strategy between continuous space and discrete space, to improve the classical DE algorithm. During the process of evolution, they are further improved by enhanced evolution operators, e.g., mutation, crossover, repair, exchange, insertion, and an effective local search to generate new candidate solutions. Experimental results using different types of remote images show that the ADESM algorithm consistently outperforms the previous subpixel mapping algorithms in all the experiments. Based on sensitivity analysis, ADESM, with its self-adaptive control parameter setting, is better than, or at least comparable to, the standard DE algorithm, when considering the accuracy of subpixel mapping, and hence provides an effective new approach to subpixel mapping for remote sensing imagery. In this paper, an unsupervised change-detection method for multitemporal satellite images is proposed. The algorithm exploits the inherent multiscale structure of the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) to individually decompose each input image into one low-pass subband and six directional high-pass subbands at each scale. To avoid illumination variation issue possibly incurred in the low-pass subband, only the DT-CWT coefficient difference resulted from the six high-pass subbands of the two satellite images under comparison is analyzed in order to decide whether each subband pixel intensity has incurred a change. Such a binary decision is based on an unsupervised thresholding derived from a mixture statistical model, with a goal of minimizing the total error probability of change detection. The binary change-detection mask is thus formed for each subband, and all the produced subband masks are merged by using both the intrascale fusion and the interscale fusion to yield the final change-detection mask. For conducting the performance evaluation of change detection, the proposed DT-CWT-based unsupervised change-detection method is exploited for both the noise-free and the noisy images. Extensive simulation results clearly show that the proposed algorithm not only consistently provides more accurate detection of small changes but also demonstrates attractive robustness against noise interference under various noise types and noise levels. With the complex building composition and imaging condition, urban areas show versatile characteristics in remote sensing images. In the literature of land-cover analysis, many algorithms utilize the features with structural information to characterize urban areas. Typically, these are more successful on some types of imagery than others, since they usually use only one kind or a few kinds of structural information. On the other hand, since levels of development in neighboring areas are not statistically independent, the multiple features (encoding the multilevel structural information) of each site in urban area depend on that of neighboring sites. In this paper, a new-come discriminative model, i.e., conditional random field (CRF), is introduced to learn the dependencies and fuse the multilevel structural information to obtain the essential detection. To meet the higher needs of some users, we introduce a two-component-based Markov random field model and show how to integrate it tightly with CRF model to refine the results from essential detection. As shown in the literature, ocean surface circulation can be estimated from sequential satellite imagery by using the maximum cross-correlation (MCC) technique. This approach is very promising since it offers the potential to acquire synoptic-scale coverage of the surface currents on a quasi-continuous temporal basis. However, MCC has also many limits due, for example, to cloud cover or the assumption that Sea Surface Temperature (SST) or other surface parameters from satellite imagery are considered as conservative passive tracers. Also, since MCC can detect only advective flows, it might not work properly in shallow water, where local heating and cooling, upwelling and other small-scale processes have a strong influence. Another limitation of the MCC technique is the impossibility of detecting currents moving along surface temperature fronts. The accuracy and reliability of MCC can be analysed by comparing the estimated velocities with those measured by in situ instrumentation, but the low number of experimental measurements does not allow a systematic statistical study of the potentials and limitations of the method. Instead, an extensive analysis of these features can be done by applying the MCC to synthetic imagery obtained from a realistic numerical ocean model that takes into account most physical phenomena. In this paper a multi-window (MW-) MCC technique is proposed, and its application to synthetic imagery obtained by a regional high-resolution implementation of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) is discussed. Urban functional area (UFA) recognition is one of the most important strategies for achieving sustainable city development. As remote-sensing and social-sensing data sources have increasingly become available, UFA recognition has received a significant amount of attention. Research on UFA recognition that uses a single dataset suffers from a low update frequency or low spatial resolution, while data fusion-based methods are limited in efficiency and accuracy. This paper proposes an integrated model to identify UFA using satellite images and taxi global positioning system (GPS) trajectories in four steps. First, blocks were generated as spatial units in the study area, and the spatiotemporal information entropy of the taxi GPS trajectory (STET) for each block was calculated. Second, a 24-hour time-frequency series was formed based on the pick-up and drop-off points extracted from taxi trajectories and used as the interpretation indicator of the blocks. The K-Means++ and k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) algorithm were used to identify their social functions. Third, a multilabel classification method based on the residual neural network (MLC-ResNets) and "You Only Look Once" (YOLO) target detection algorithms were used to identify the features of the typical and atypical spatial textures, respectively, of the satellite images in the blocks. The confidence scores of the features of the blocks were categorized by the decision tree algorithm. Fourth, to find the best way to integrate the two sub-models for UFA identification, the 10-fold cross-validation method based on stratified random sampling was applied to determine the most optimal STET thresholds. The results showed that the average accuracy reached 82.0%, with an average kappa of 73.5%—significant improvements over most existing studies. Automatic feature extraction domain has witnessed the application of many intelligent methodologies over past decade; however detection accuracy of these approaches were limited as object geometry and contextual knowledge were not given enough consideration. In this paper, we propose a frame work for accurate detection of features along with automatic interpolation, and interpretation by modelling feature shape as well as contextual knowledge using advanced techniques such as SVRF, Cellular Neural Network, Core set, and MACA. Reliable detection of clouds is a critical pre-processing step in optical satellite based remote sensing. Currently, most methods are based on classifying invidual pixels from their spectral signatures, therefore they do not incorporate the spatial patterns. This often leads to misclassifications of highly reflective surfaces, such as human made structures or snow/ice. Multi-temporal methods can be used to alleviate this problem, but these methods introduce new problems, such as the need of a cloud-free image of the scene. In this paper, we introduce the Remote Sensing Network (RS-Net), a deep learning model for detection of clouds in optical satellite imagery, based on the U-net architecture. The model is trained and evaluated using the Landsat 8 Biome and SPARCS datasets, and it shows state-of-the-art performance, especially over biomes with hardly distinguishable scenery, such as clouds over snowy and icy regions. In particular, the performance of the model that uses only the RGB bands is significantly improved, showing promising results for cloud detection with smaller satellites with limited multi-spectral capabilities. Furthermore, we show how training the RS-Net models on data from an existing cloud masking method, which are treated as noisy data, leads to increased performance compared to the original method. This is validated by using the Fmask algorithm to annotate the Landsat 8 datasets, and then use these annotations as training data for regularized RS-Net models, which then show improved performance compared to the Fmask algorithm. Digital image processing (DIP) has great application values in many fields, especially in remote sensing image processing, which represents the acquisition, enhancement, analysis, encoding, transmission, and storage of remote sensing images. With the development of chip technology and parallel computing technology, various digital image processing technologies have been successfully applied to satellite applications to help researchers exploit reliable information from remote-sensing images. However, the huge amount of images generated by ultra-high resolution optical remote sensing satellites put great pressure on existing transmission, storage, and processing technologies. Therefore, this paper proposes a spatio-temporal compression pipeline for remote sensing images based on lossy compression methods with ultra-high compression ratios to reduce the overhead required for the transmission and storage of remote sensing images while maintaining the quality of the compressed images. The accuracy and noise tolerance of 13 global models and 5 Case II chlorophyll a (chl a) retrieval models were evaluated using three dataset. It was found that if 5 % input noise related to atmospheric correction is considered, then the uncertainty associated with noise tolerance varied from 5.5 % to 55.6 %, and these uncertainties generally accounts for 15.63 % to 24.75 % of the total uncertainty. This observation suggests that an optimal algorithm not only should have a strong chl a concentration prediction ability but also should possess high insensitivity to the noise of remote-sensing imagery. The accuracy evaluations of chl a models were based on comparisons of chl a predicted models with chl a concentration measured analytically for field measurements. The results indicate that none of the selected chl a estimation algorithms provide accurate retrievals of chl a in turbid waters. This may be attributed to the strong optical influence of organic and inorganic matter at the blue green range, and the non-negligible of non-organic matter absorption at the red and near-infrared ranges. In order to solve this problem, the chl a concentration retrieval models must be further optimized. After being optimized using the empirical optimized method constructed in this paper, a single parameterized NDCI (normalized difference chl a index) model produces accurate retrievals in the Yellow River Estuary, Taihu Lake and Chesapeake Bay. If 5 % input noise associated with residual uncertainty 0of atmospheric correction is taken into account, the model produces only 29.96 % uncertainty for the remote sensing of chl a concentration in these three turbid waters. Alignment and parallelism are frequently found between objects in high-resolution remote sensing images and can be used to interpret and describe the observed scenes. In this paper, we propose new representations of parallelism and alignment as fuzzy spatial relations, which capture the imprecision in the semantics of both relations. We propose two novel definitions of alignment between objects: local and global. In local alignment, each object of the group is aligned with its neighbors, while in global alignment, every object of the group is aligned to all other members. Both definitions consider each object as a whole and are based on relative position measures. They are robust with respect to segmentation errors. Furthermore, we propose an efficient graph-based method to determine which are the locally and the globally aligned groups of objects from a set of segmented objects. In addition, we propose a fuzzy definition for the parallel relation, which is also based on relative position measures and is adequate to represent the parallelism between a globally aligned group of objects and another object or group of objects. In this paper, we present a novel unsupervised algorithm, called CLimate and rEmote sensing Association patteRns Miner, for mining association patterns on heterogeneous time series from climate and remote sensing data integrated in a remote sensing information system developed to improve the monitoring of sugar cane fields. The system, called RemoteAgri, consists of a large database of climate data and low-resolution remote sensing images, an image preprocessing module, a time series extraction module, and time series mining methods. The preprocessing module was projected to perform accurate geometric correction, what is a requirement particularly for land and agriculture applications of satellite images. The time series extraction is accomplished through a graphical interface that allows easy interaction and high flexibility to users. The time series mining method transforms series to symbolic representation in order to identify patterns in a multitemporal satellite images and associate them with patterns in other series within a temporal sliding window. The validation process was achieved with agroclimatic data and NOAA-AVHRR images of sugar cane fields. Results show a correlation between agroclimatic time series and vegetation index images. Rules generated by our new algorithm show the association patterns in different periods of time in each time series, pointing to a time delay between the occurrences of patterns in the series analyzed, corroborating what specialists usually forecast without having the burden of dealing with many data charts. This paper is an attempt to introduce the role of earth observation technology and a type of digital earth processing in mineral resources exploration and assessment. The sub-pixel distribution and quantity of alteration minerals were mapped using linear spectral unmixing (LSU) and mixture tuned matched filtering (MTMF) algorithms in the Sarduiyeh area, SE Kerman, Iran, using the visible-near infrared (VNIR) and short wave infrared (SWIR) bands of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument and the results were compared to evaluate the efficiency of methods. Three groups of alteration minerals were identified: (1) pyrophylite-alunite (2) sericite-kaolinite, and (3) chlorite-calcite-epidote. Results showed that high abundances within pixels were successfully corresponded to the alteration zones. In addition, a number of unreported altered areas were identified. Field observations and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of field samples confirmed the dominant mineral phases identified remotely. Results of LSU and MTMF were generally similar with overall accuracy of 82.9 and 90.24%, respectively. It is concluded that LSU and MTMF are suitable for sub-pixel mapping of alteration minerals and when the purpose is identification of particular targets, rather than all the elements in the scene, the MTMF algorithm could be proposed. This paper addresses the remote sensing image pan-sharpening problem from the perspective of compressed sensing (CS) theory which ensures that with the sparsity regularization, a compressible signal can be correctly recovered from the global linear sampled data. First, the degradation model from a high- to low-resolution multispectral (MS) image and high-resolution panchromatic (PAN) image is constructed as a linear sampling process which is formulated as a matrix. Then, the model matrix is considered as the measurement matrix in CS, so pan-sharpening is converted into signal restoration problem with sparsity regularization. Finally, the basis pursuit (BP) algorithm is used to resolve the restoration problem, which can recover the high-resolution MS image effectively. The QuickBird and IKONOS satellite images are used to test the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed method can well preserve spectral and spatial details of the source images. The development of satellite image acquisition tools helped improving the extraction of information about natural scenes. In the proposed approach, we try to minimize imperfections accompanying the image interpretation process and to maximize useful information extracted from these images through the use of blind source separation (BSS) and fusion methods. In order to extract maximum information from multi-sensor images, we propose to use three algorithms of BSS that are FAST- ICA2D, JADE2D, and SOBI2D. Then by employing various fusion methods such as the probability, possibility, and evidence methods we can minimize both imprecision and uncertainty. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach based on five main steps. The first step is to apply the three BSS algorithms to the satellites images; it results in obtaining a set of image sources representing each a facet of the land cover. A second step is to choose the image having the maximum of kurtosis and negentropy. After the BSS evaluation, we proceed to the training step using neural networks. The goal of this step is to provide learning regions which are useful for the fusion step. The next step consists in choosing the best adapted fusion method for the selected source images through a case-based reasoning (CBR) module. If the CBR module does not contain a case similar to the one we are seeking, we proceed to apply the three fusion methods. Preservation of spectral information and enhancement of spatial resolution are regarded as important issues in remote sensing satellite image fusion. In previous research, various algorithms have been proposed. Although they have been successful, there are still some margins of spatial and spectral quality that can be improved. In addition, a new method that can be used for various types of sensors is required. In this paper, a new adaptive fusion method based on component substitution is proposed to merge a high-spatial-resolution panchromatic (PAN) image with a multispectral image. This method generates high-/low-resolution synthetic component images by partial replacement and uses statistical ratio-based high-frequency injection. Various remote sensing satellite images, such as IKONOS-2, QuickBird, LANDSAT ETM+, and SPOT-5, were employed in the evaluation. Experiments showed that this approach can resolve spectral distortion problems and successfully conserve the spatial information of a PAN image. Thus, the fused image obtained from the proposed method gave higher fusion quality than the images from some other methods. The simulation of remote-sensing hyperspectral images is a useful tool for a variety of tasks such as the design of systems, the understanding of the image formation process, and the development and validation of data processing algorithms. The lack of ground truth and the incomplete knowledge of the Martian environment make simulation studies of Mars hyperspectral images a useful tool for automated analysis of Mars data. Hyperspectral near-infrared scenes of mineral mixtures have been simulated to analyze the contributions of surface minerals, atmosphere, and sensor noise on images of Mars. Modeling the remote-sensing process creates a means for the independent analysis of the influence of the environment and instruments on the detection accuracy of the surface composition (e.g., the scene endmembers). The end-to-end model builds surface reflectance scenes based on laboratory sample spectra, creates atmospheric effects using radiative transfer routines, simulates the instrument response function using CRISM data files, and adds instrument noise from thermal and other sources. The purpose of this paper is to understand the hyperspectral remote-sensing process to eventually enable the elevated detection accuracy of minerals on the surface of Mars. In this paper we present an improved watershed segmentation algorithm for settlement mapping from medium resolution satellite data over plain areas in China. The algorithm can increase the computational efficiency of the fastest reported watershed segmentation algorithm by 30-40%. We apply this method to a selected study area in southern Hebei Province, China. We acquired a Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM + ) image over this area in May 2000, two Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images in August 2004 and April 2005, and two Beijing-1 satellite images in May 2006 and May 2007. The three types of images have three similar spectral bands (green, red and near-infrared) with similar spatial resolution (30-32 m). Only the red and near-infrared bands were used in image segmentation for settlement area extraction. The extracted settlement results are compared with manual interpretation results by two people. We assumed the human interpretation results are of higher accuracy than the segmentation results. Our results indicated that our settlement area extraction method is effective. Many types of nonlinear classifiers have been proposed to automatically generate land-cover maps from satellite images. Some are based on the estimation of posterior class probabilities, whereas others estimate the decision boundary directly. In this paper, we propose a modular design able to focus the learning process on the decision boundary by using posterior probability estimates. To do so, we use a self-configuring architecture that incorporates specialized modules to deal with conflicting classes, and we apply a learning algorithm that focuses learning on the posterior probability regions that are critical for the performance of the decision problem stated by the user-defined misclassification costs. Moreover, we show that by filtering the posterior probability map, the impulsive noise, which is a common effect in automatic land-cover classification, can be significantly reduced. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed solutions on real multi- and hyperspectral images, versus other typical approaches, that are not based on probability estimates, such as Support Vector Machines. This paper addresses the question of whether data assimilation of remotely sensed leaf area index and/or relative evapotranspiration estimates can be used to forecast total wheat production as an indicator of agricultural drought. A series of low to moderate resolution MODIS satellite data of the Borkhar district, Isfahan (Iran) was converted into both leaf area index and relative evapotranspiration using a land surface energy algorithm for the year 2005. An agrohydrological model was then implemented in a distributed manner using spatial information of soil types, land use, groundwater and irrigation on a raster basis with a grid size of 250 m, i.e. moderate resolution. A constant gain Kalman filter data assimilation algorithm was used for each data series to correct the internal variables of the distributed model whenever remotely sensed data were available. Predictions for 1 month in advance using simulations with assimilation at a regional scale were very promising with respect to the statistical data (bias = ±10%). However, longer-term predictions, i.e. 2 months in advance, resulted in a higher bias between the simulated and statistical data. In this paper, we address automatic updating of land-cover maps by using remote-sensing images periodically acquired over the same investigated area under the hypothesis that a reliable ground truth is not available for all the considered acquisitions. The problem is modeled in the domain-adaptation framework by introducing a novel method designed for land-cover map updating, which is based on a domain-adaptation support vector machine technique. In addition, a novel circular accuracy assessment strategy is proposed for the validation of the results obtained by domain-adaptation classifiers when no ground-truth labels for the considered image are available. Abstract: The continued advancements in satellite sensor technologies have increased the number of objects that can be discriminated within satellite imagery. Effective segmentation of high resolution satellite imagery is currently a hot topic of research. Existing segmentation algorithms and applications contain many parameters and options which require the operator to select a proper set of parameters for a given data set. The setting of these parameters can be quite tedious and the same set of parameters may or may not work from one high resolution satellite image scene to the next. This paper presents a modification of a region based approach for unsupervised segmentation of high resolution satellite imagery as a solution to segmentation of land use coverage in QuickBird multispectral 2.44 m imagery. This type of segmentation is important to a variety of applications such as land use classification and urban planning. All region based segmentation approaches require a method for representing image regions/segments and judging the similarity between two given image regions/segments. In the proposed modification of this paper, region description is provided through the integration of band ratios. Region similarity measures are performed using Fuzzy Logic. The Hierarchical Split Merge Refinement (HSMR) algorithmic framework for unsupervised image segmentation is the foundation for this modification. In addition, this paper improves upon the merging and refinement processes of the HSMR algorithm. This paper investigates the applicability and limitations of combining multi-sensor data through data fusion, to increase the usefulness of the datasets. This study focuses on merging daily mean aerosol optical thickness (AOT), as measured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra and Aqua satellites, to increase spatial coverage and produce complete fields to facilitate comparison with models and station data. The fusion algorithm used the maximum likelihood (ML) technique to merge the pixel values where available, and then the optimal interpolation method to fill the remaining gaps. The algorithm was applied to a regional AOT subset. The results illustrate that the fusion algorithm can produce complete AOT fields with reasonably good data values and acceptable errors. The cumulative semivariogram (CSV) was found to be sensitive to the spatial distribution and fraction of gap areas and, thus, useful for assessing the sensitivity of the fused data to spatial gaps. Watershed transformation in mathematical morphology is a powerful morphological tool for image segmentation that is usually defined for greyscale images and applied to the gradient magnitude of an image. This paper presents an extension of the watershed algorithm for multispectral image segmentation. A vector-based morphological approach is proposed to compute gradient magnitude from multispectral imagery, which is then input into watershed transformation for image segmentation. The gradient magnitude is obtained at multiple scales. After an automatic elimination of local irrelevant minima, a watershed transformation is applied to segment the image. The segmentation results were evaluated and compared with other multispectral image segmentation methods, in terms of visual inspection, and object-based image classification using high resolution multispectral images. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can produce accurate segmentation results and higher classification accuracy, if the scales and contrast parameter are appropriately selected in the gradient computation and subsequent local minima elimination. This paper presents the Automatic Registration of Remote-Sensing Images (ARRSI); an automatic registration system built to register satellite and aerial remotely sensed images. The system is designed specifically to address the problems associated with the registration of remotely sensed images obtained at different times and/or from different sensors. The ARRSI system is capable of handling remotely sensed images geometrically distorted by various transformations such as translation, rotation, and shear. Global and local contrast issues associated with remotely sensed images are addressed in ARRSI using control-point detection and matching processes based on a phase-congruency model. Intensity-difference issues associated with multimodal registration of remotely sensed images are addressed in ARRSI through the use of features that are invariant to intensity mappings during the control-point matching process. An adaptive control-point matching scheme is employed in ARRSI to reduce the performance issues associated with the registration of large remotely sensed images. Finally, a variation on the Random Sample and Consensus algorithm called Maximum Distance Sample Consensus is introduced in ARRSI to improve the accuracy of the transformation model between two remotely sensed images while minimizing computational overhead. The ARRSI system has been tested using various satellite and aerial remotely sensed images and evaluated based on its accuracy and computational performance. The results indicate that the registration accuracy of ARRSI is comparable to that produced by a human expert and improvement over the baseline and multimodal sum of squared differences registration techniques tested. In recent years, many approaches have been exploited for automatic urban road extraction. Most of these approaches are based on edge and line detecting algorithms. In this paper, a new integrated system for automatic extraction of main roads in high-resolution optical satellite images is present. Firstly, a multi-scale greylevel morphological cleaning algorithm is proposed to reduce the grey deviation of the road regions. Secondly, based on the greylevel difference between road surfaces and environmental objects, a colour high-resolution satellite image is segmented into a simplified imagemap by using the mean shift algorithm, which consists of three stages. The first stage deals with image filtering, the second stage deals with colour segmentation, and the third stage is proposed to fuse small regions in the segmented image. The mean shift filter algorithm not only smoothes the image, but also preserves abrupt changes (i.e. edges) in the local structure. The mean shift segmentation algorithm is a straightforward extension of the smoothing algorithm, which preserves discontinuity. From the histogram of the simplified imagemap, we can find the potential road surfaces, and use greylevel threshold to convert the segmented image into a binary one. The binary image is processed by using binary mathematical morphological closing and opening to remove small objects and to open the connected street blocks. We use a contour tracing algorithm to remove holes in street-block regions and to detect the street blocks' contours. In this research we found that many street blocks' contours were preserved perfectly, except for some of them which were depressed. Finally, we utilize the convex hull algorithm to smooth the street blocks' zigzag edges and to close the gaps in some street blocks, and then, we get the road edges. The integrated system for road network extraction is tested on the red band of an IKONOS multispectral image; all algorithms in this study are developed in C++ under Windows XP operating system. Results of the road network extraction are presented to illustrate the validation of the extracting strategy and the corresponding algorithms in this research, and future prospects are exposed. An evapotranspiration method comparison was carried out by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI, Sri Lanka), at two locations in the Gediz Basin, Turkey, in the period from May to September 1998. In the IWMI study a number of ground-based techniques were compared with results obtained by remote sensing methods. Recently, a search of the satellite active archive yielded over 70 high quality level 1b images from NOAA/AVHRR over the same time period. The processing of these images with the SEBAL algorithm enabled us to build up a detailed time series of sensible and latent heat fluxes for a period of 120 days. In this paper a comparison is made between the sensible and latent heat fluxes determined from the present series of NOAA-14/AVHRR images and the results obtained earlier from various other prediction methods applied during the 1998 IWMI project. Specifically, the NOAA/SEBAL results are assessed against the scintillometer and temperature fluctuation methods. The results show that the NOAA derived evapotranspiration values follow the seasonal irrigation cycle quite well and correspond closely to the Landsat derived values, although they are lower than the results obtained with the traditional crop factor and Penman–Monteith methods. Multitemporal and multisatellite studies or comparisons between satellite data and local ground measurements require nowadays precise and automatic geometric correction of satellite images. This paper presents a fully automatic geometric correction system capable of georeferencing satellite images with high accuracy. An orbital prediction model, which provides initial earth locations, is combined with the proposed automatic contour-matching technique. This combination allows correcting the low-frequency error component, mainly due to timing and orbital model errors, as well as the high-frequency error component, due to variations in the spacecraft's attitude. The approach aims at exploiting the maximum reliable information in the image to guide the matching algorithm. The contour-matching process has three main steps: 1) estimation of the gradient energy map (edges) and detection of the cloudless (reliable) areas; 2) initialization of the contours positions; 3) estimation of the transformation parameters (affine model) using a contour optimization approach. Three different robust and automatic algorithms are proposed for optimization, and their main features are discussed. Finally, the performance of the three proposed algorithms is assessed using a new error estimation technique applied to Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), Sea-viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (Sea WiFS), and multisensor AVHRR-Sea WifS imagery. Image segmentation plays a significant role in remote sensing image processing. Among numerous segmentation algorithms, the region-merging segmentation algorithm is widely used due to its well-organized structure and outstanding results. Many merging criteria (MC) were designed to improve the accuracy of region-merging segmentation, but each MC has its own shortcomings, which can cause segmentation errors. Segmentation accuracy can be improved by referring to the segmentation results. To achieve this, an approach for detecting and correcting region-merging image segmentation errors is proposed, and then an iterative optimization model is established. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) The conflict types of matching segment pairs are divided into scale-expression conflict (SEC) and region-ownership conflict (ROC), and ROC is more suitable for optimization. (2) An equal-scale local evaluation method was designed to quantify the optimization potential of ROC. (3) A regional anchoring strategy is proposed to preserve the results of the previous iteration optimization. Three QuickBird satellite images of different land-cover types were used for validating the proposed approach. Both unsupervised and supervised evaluation results prove that the proposed approach can effectively improve segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new approach for sub-pixel co-registration based on Fourier phase correlation combined with the Harris detector. Due to the limitation of the standard phase correlation method to achieve only pixel-level accuracy, another approach is required to reach sub-pixel matching precision. We first applied the Harris corner detector to extract corners from both references and sensed images. Then, we identified their corresponding points using phase correlation between the image pairs. To achieve sub-pixel registration accuracy, two optimization algorithms were used. The effectiveness of the proposed method was tested with very high-resolution (VHR) remote sensing images, including Pleiades satellite images and aerial imagery. Compared with the speeded-up robust features (SURF)-based method, phase correlation with the Blackman window function produced 91% more matches with high reliability. Moreover, the results of the optimization analysis have revealed that Nelder–Mead algorithm performs better than the two-point step size gradient algorithm regarding localization accuracy and computation time. The proposed approach achieves better accuracy than 0.5 pixels and outperforms the speeded-up robust features (SURF)-based method. Objects in satellite remote sensing image sequences often have large deformations, and the stereo matching of this kind of image is so difficult that the matching rate generally drops. A disparity refinement method is needed to correct and fill the disparity. A method for disparity refinement based on the results of plane segmentation is proposed in this paper. The plane segmentation algorithm includes two steps: Initial segmentation based on mean-shift and alpha-expansion-based energy minimization. According to the results of plane segmentation and fitting, the disparity is refined by filling missed matching regions and removing outliers. The experimental results showed that the proposed plane segmentation method could not only accurately fit the plane in the presence of noise but also approximate the surface by plane combination. After the proposed plane segmentation method was applied to the disparity refinement of remote sensing images, many missed matches were filled, and the elevation errors were reduced. This proved that the proposed algorithm was effective. For difficult evaluations resulting from significant variations in remote sensing images of different satellites, the edge matching rate and the edge matching map are proposed as new stereo matching evaluation and analysis tools.
