This paper reports on the opening intervention of the Workshop: the title, objectives and structure are explained. The study day was proposed as a multidisciplinary comparison of the relationship between architecture and autism. The starting assumption was that this is not merely a relationship necessary to improve the living conditions of autistic people and their families, but also potentially useful to broaden the possibilities and viewpoints of architecture rather than limiting them. Some theoretical references are presented to support this hypothesis, which could guide the new technical possibilities which engineering and technology can make practicable to enrich the sensitive responsiveness of architecture.

Collage is no longer a simple representation of the project or either a discourse through images meant to remain confined to the format of paper architecture. In the digital age, it has become a decisive tool in the design process. It is thanks to Photoshop collages that the new generations of architects, active since the early 2000s, began to challenge their discipline and its history, to reactivate interrupted paths and to introduce fragments of retroactive visions in the contemporary project, avoiding stylisation resurged in the postmodern times. Through the work of Office, and its unpublished drawings, the essay proposes to reconstruct the advent of Photoshop collage and its perspective vision as design criteria in today’s architecture.

Between the end of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century, the south of Italy becomes one of the central destinations of the Grand Tour, travelers and foreign artists tell the landscape through the drafting of travel reports and drawings that give back an image of the places often changed over time. In particular, the territory of Campania and above all the city of Naples and the adjacent Phlegrean territory, exerts a certain charm that translates into the creation of real works of art. The work of the French architect and landscape painter Prosper Barbot is part of this context, thanks to two trips undertaken at the beginning of the XIX century, he draws up a corpus of drawings in which, through a technique that is anything but static, shows an image of the places visited completely new and personal. Through the selection of some of these designs, the paper intends to illustrate how the author’s gaze and interest have outlined the image of urban environments and spaces related to the Phlegrean and Neapolitan context.

In the second half of the 18th century, renowned archaeological sites and exuberant nature attracted travellers from many parts of Europe to Sicily. They wanted to end their Grand Tour on the Island in search of the picturesque and sublime cities, ruins and landscapes of a mythical, wild, Mediterranean territory. The fourth volume of the Voyage pittoresque ou description des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile by Jean-Claude Richard Abbé de Saint-Non, published in two parts in 1785 and 1786, marked the arrival point of the artistic, archaeological and naturalistic interests of many travellers who arrived on the Island in those years. These were symbolically represented by Dominique Vivant Denon, appointed by Saint-Non to describe the places and monuments in writing, which had also been described through the images of the artists who had accompanied him during the trip. The abbot, dismantled and reassembled the texts of the diary of Denon, also in the fourth volume, as he had done in the previous three volumes, published in original form only at a later time, and only in the case of Sicily (Voyage in Sicile, 1788). Denon’s diary, published ten years after its original editorship and without the full-bodied historical insights later added by Saint-Non, kept the freshness of the author’s travel impressions intact. This diary will be the main reference of this paper that intends to retrace the journey from Messina to Catania, along the traces of the roads of eastern Sicily, also through the images handed down by the artists who accompanied him: the landscape painter Claude-Louis Châtelet and the architects Louis-Jean Desprez and Jean-Augustin Renard.

The architectural project has had different ways of representing itself and has been evolving for about a century, following the progress of science and technology that, with the advent of digital technology in the 1960s, completely subverted how a project idea was presented. Each historical period, which not by chance had its own way of representing architecture, responds quite accurately to what can be called the influential trends of the time. It is no coincidence that the beauty of architecture corresponds to models of life and society that are never in antithesis. Architectural research has historically had, until the Modern era, a way of representing itself quite univocally and has rarely tried to dialogue with the other arts, even in moments of greater reaction to the art and architecture of the time. My personal experience in the use of collage as a tool for the definition of the architectural project was mainly focused in the search for models of representation, using firstly paper collage and, later, the photo collage, with the new possibilities to impress a photographic plate and even later, in the 1980s, with the use of the photocopy. The advent of digital technology has also allowed us to perfect this mechanism, even though it has almost completely lost the dexterity in the composition of the drawing and deprived the author of the uniqueness of the work, allowing the digital to reproduce infinitely the work itself. These various and complex techniques can only be accomplished through the manual and intellectual capacity of those who know mechanisms that are not purely technical, but which are rather found in a complete whole that is the architectural project, legible in its essence and materiality.

Through sheer determination and courage, Kahn has researched the nature of concrete. Each of his renowned works in exposed concrete is itself an important chapter in the history of architecture for the exploration into concrete’s formal expression, beyond the lesson of Le Corbusier. Kahn’s obsession on concrete fabrication processes, and the values of joint, growth and ornament, are systematically examined in the paper. Moving through the many construction systems experienced by Kahn, from the discovery of exposed concrete in the form of béton brut at the Yale Art Gallery, the paper culminates in the reconstruction of the artistic and technical characteristics of two great worksite, the Salk Institute and the Dhaka Parliament. Kahn’s path to the true ‘nature of concrete’ and the main techniques and poetic discoveries such as the ‘liquid stone’ of the Salk Institute and the expression of ‘growth’ at the Dhaka Parliament, are examined.

The Smart City word borns as an answer to some important problems that the XXI century city is asked to answer: population growing, urbanisation, climatic changes. The development of the XX century city was carried on in a deregulated way, without considering that the “Earth good” was limited and its ecosystem breakable. It is into this crisis climate that the concept of intelligent city borns and develops. The paper aims to study this issue from the origins of the word and from the historic evolution that made the concept real.

COLONIE DI VACANZA ,ARCHITETTURA ,LITORALE - Abstract
This paper concerns a new type of buildings, called “colonie di vacanza”, appeared in the Italian coasts during the Thirties. The objective is to show the typological organization and the original architectural issues of Italian “colonie di vacanza” (here translated as “holiday colonies”) as outcomes of the educational programs and as a reflect of changing ideas about coastal landscape. These extraordinary shaped buildings were conceived for the holidays of children, temporary separated from their family and taken to a healthy place, where they could expose themselves to the benefits of marine water, fresh air and sunlight. This experience was developed from the middle of the 19th century to the last decades of the 20th century. Medicine, Propaganda, Pedagogy, and Leisure are the key words of an extraordinary experience of tourism that involved many generations of Italian people. As a social phenomenon, the Holiday Camps are not especially Italian: as they are a direct outcome of industrial society, they are diffused in many countries. But the Italian experience is characterized by the quality of its architectures, representing a real field of experimentation. In the Italy of the fascist regime, the holiday colonies experience was over its original starting point - the fighting against the tuberculosis and the development of a moral pedagogy against the diffusion of the socialist thought among young proletarian people -, and it was characterized by the specificity of the social program and by the quality of its architectural issues. After sketching out the three times that characterized the Italian experience – the battle against tuberculosis before WW1, the “colonie di vacanza” as a propaganda tool in the Thirties, and the discovery of education by leisure in the Sixties -, the paper shows the typological organization of Italian Holiday Camps during the Thirties as an outcome of the educational programmes, and its original architectural issues as a reflect of changing ideas about coastal landscape. The actual key words that describe the holiday colonies experience during the Thirties are neither Leisure nor Medicine, but Propaganda. The text analyses the relationship among the “colonie di vacanza” and the great investment on children’s holidays as a way to strengthen social consensus made by the fascist regime, the image of modernity transmitted by their architectural shapes, the different kinds of architectural references that we can recognize in the buildings (the iconography of imperial rhetoric of arch and columns; the search for the expression of industrial culture; the transfiguration of buildings in “mechanical toys” (giochi meccanici); the references to Modern Architecture); and finally their relationship with the natural landscape. Once isolated Monuments in the Seashore, and now enigmatic presences in the contemporary tourist resorts, the Italian Holiday Colonies manifest the search for a positive relationship with landscape at the time of Modernity, but they also question the future relationships among City, Sea and Human Life.

Interior design studios are still too little concerned with designing for autism, instead, these issues are left to building regulations, accessibility manuals, supportive technology, or linked to the prescriptive application of guidelines. However, this approach to the design of living environments cannot suffice, since it does not take into account the multiple facets of autism in many aspects of life. In this paper, some examples will be described of design experiences of architects all over the world who have been able to mediate between the generalizations needed to build guidelines and the study of specific preferences.

Research on the sensual experience of place is not a mainstream topic in the architectural debate; it is more common in other disciplines like landscape architecture or interior design. The curriculum sometime offers opportunities of cross-pollination between disciplines; students in architecture courses might be exposed to different theories of space more typical to other fields. This paper explore the teaching/research nexus within QUT Master of Architecture research stream; the focus of the discussion is students’ experimentation with people’s experience and navigation of the public space. Theories of placemaking in relation to urban design are first introduced; then the teaching/research nexus is discussed; finally students’ experience in approaching phenomenological research within the Master of Architecture are presented.

Known since the since the twenties of the nineteenth century, when the temple was completely taken to the light and rebuilt to host the “Museo patrio”, the Capitolium of Brescia has been object of many studies, first of all the volume “Museo bresciano illustrato”, published in 1838 to the end of investigations carried out between 1823 and 1826. In spite of the interest from many scholars of the Roman architecture in Cisalpine, the temple has never been studied systematically, even if during the seventies Antonio Frova, with Giuliana Cavalieri Manasse and Maria Pia Rossignani, started to study and to catalog the architectural material publishing first results in occasion of the nineteenth centenary of the Temple’s dedication in the 1973. In anticipation of the publication of the last field investigations and of the researches that recently have been realized both on the Capitolium and on the Republican Sanctuary, expected in 2013, this paper aims to present architectural blocks and fragments of the architectural decoration in a catalogue resulted by a census both of the pieces replace in situ and of those ones still on the ground.

This concept paper aims to destabilize the limits and delineations of conventional architectural thinking by disclosing its ambiguities and contingencies through the centralization of the inhabitation-displacement nexus and, by extension, the figure of the inhabitant. Building upon our January 2019 workshop at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Germany, entitled: Inside Out – Outside In: Shifting Architectures of Refugee Inhabitation, its keynote interventions by Prof. Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi and Prof. Romola Sanyal, together with the vast array of topics and methodologies brought to the table by our presenters, we primarily argue towards the concept of inhabitation as an epistemic shift of both the site and the subject of architectural (knowledge) production. Shifting our focus particularly to the sites and subjects of displacement (i.e., ‘the refugee’/ ‘the migrant’ and beyond) enabled us to centralize the concept of inhabitation as a modality of the architectural spatial production of an otherwise through the prime subject figure of architectural authorship: the inhabitant.

This paper is about the architectural experience which evolved through the design of cemeteries. Describing five different cases, we identified the relationship between the foundamental principle of the enclosure and its variations due to specific contextual conditions, both related to existing historical elements and to the local landscape. In this way the project for new cemeteries or their enlargement become an experimentation on "identity variations".

The paper presents the results of geophysical surveys carried out in three large monumental complexes in Hierapolis to document their still-buried structures. in particular, different geophysical techniques (Ground-Penetrating radar, electrical resistivity Tomography, Magnetometry and Seismic refraction Tomography) were integrated to collect new data for the reconstruction of the layout of the porticoes surrounding the civil agora and the Gymnasium. Furthermore, in the apollo Sanctuary, combining the geophysical techniques and the recently acquired architectural data, it was possible to better understand the tectonic context of the sacred site and to document the relationship between the seismic fractures and building a, whose podium rested on them.

thanks to systematic sampling and pre-existing knowledge of the composition of the three orders of the theatre, the paper presents a detailed study of the criteria adopted for the procurement of marbles used in the construction of the scaenae frons. the building site of this monument has been the object of many studies, given its exceptional state of conservation, the dedicatory inscription mentioning the Dokimeian marble and the assumed involvement of aphrodisian craftsmen in the decoration process. the present research offers new data regarding (i) the first phase of the scaenae frons (augustan and Julio-Claudian era), (ii) the chronological development of the severan building site (early to late severan period), (iii) the provenance of the marbles used the logeion and the three orders (mainly from Marmar tepe and thiounta quarries), and (iv) the distribution of white and coloured marbles (both local and imported) aimed at emphasising the central section of the scaenae frons.

This paper is the result of collaborative work and joint construction. Our intention is to explain the utterly uncertain and always debatable connection between architecture and philosophy. Namely, this is an elucidation of the reconstruction of the connection between philosophy or theory on the one hand, and architecture on the other, by making reference and explaining “The Architectural Philosophy” (Eisenman’s concept), thereby introducing a few premises that would regulate the status and form of the copula “and” between these respective fields. The first premise could regard the various kinds of inspiration that philosophy or theory has produced in the field of architecture, or even the results of various encounters and dialogues between philosophers and architects. Indeed, today the philosopher is awakened in the architect. On the other hand, it seems to us, and this is our second premise, that it is indeed possible to explain the uncertainty of the encounter between an architect and a philosopher through the example of their collaboration or exchange.

Two strong concepts like “geometry” and “architecture” can be enhanced if they are correlated to each other, especially if the link between them is the word “construction”. From the abstract form of the first concept to the tangible physicality of the second one, the distance seems really short. The assume is confirmed both for the traditional representation and the digitally expressions: it constitute the foundament of the architectural formation and production. This is valid for the architectural dimension but also for the urban one. In this context the treatises can be considered as a source not inedit but still with great disciplinary and interdisciplinary implications: a distillate of knoledge coming from multiple cultural matrices. The paper wants to demonstrate that the territory can be read and confirmed in the fortified city, which for centuries has been considered the prevailing urban model., Due concetti forti come “geometria” e “architettura” possono risultare vieppiù rafforzati se insieme correlati, specie se il legame è costituito da un terzo termine: “costruire”.

Wherever we live, in the affluent West, in emerging economies or in the poorest countries, the increasing presence of waste is a common experience that triggered many design experiments. Environmental sustainability is obviously the narrative glue which keeps together these researches, but it does not explain alone the attitude of waste and its recycling strategies (both in a material and conceptual sense) to become the engine of design and get so compelling solutions. Though the ethical intentionality is an integral part of these proposals, their aesthetic effectiveness lies more plausibly in the ambiguous relationship between past and present triggered by the very idea of recycling: between the reassuring continuity of the known and the threatening return of the removed, between nostalgia for the familiar and its inevitable estrangement. This book collects together 46 papers presented at the Third Biennial Conference of i-Rec, International Group for the Diffusion of Research and Information on Post-Disaster Reconstruction. The various sections of the book cover the technical and administrative aspects of housing and other buildings after disaster. The approach to post-disaster shelter and reconstruction exemplified by this volume is fully interdisciplinary. A very wide range of perspectives is covered, including the disciplines and sub-disciplines of seismic and structural engineering, architecture, applied geography and geology, environmental psychology, paediatrics, development studies, economics, medicine and public health, management studies and political science. The volume is also intended to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the floods that severely damaged Florence in 1966 and did terrible damage to priceless art treasures.

This paper presents the key steps of the digitazation project of the Digital Palladio project of the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura (CISA) Andrea Palladio. Goals of this project have been the collection, enhancement and accessibility of the whole of visual items documenting the activity of the architect Andrea Palladio, through the digitization and storing of more than 33.000 items. Our work aimed to operate within this framework, in order to define a basic methodology regarding the digitization of the most relevant items of the whole of materials representing the documental system on the Andrea Palladio works that can be summarized in six dimensionally and typologically different documental subsystems: photographs, Palladio’s own hand drawings, modern surveys, archival documents, ancient maps, printed XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries books.

Architettura ,Sostenibilità ,Innovazione - Abstract
The change in life rhythms and styles of the contemporary society has brought to a parallel change in the housing features, entrusting a more and more important role to night and day living buildings. Commercial premises, fitness and sport centers, cinemas and theatres, nurseries and meeting areas, offices and administrative services are located in macro-structures, where, with an accelerated cadence, the individual is brought to spend the whole day, putting in diubt the role of the traditional housing spaces. Starting from the accurate study of the functional and constructive features of the three buildings mentioned, ther paper aims to allow a wider consideration about social structures, unstable balancing between fiction and reality to be, for which innovation, technology and sustainability have a preference valence.
