This paper reviews the post-2010 debate on Athenian building accounts of the classical age, with particular regard to the fifth century BCE. An initial summary of the main papers in epigraphic research is provided. The essay aims to feed the debate on the relationship between the inscriptions, often of monumental form and impact, and the writings produced and presented by magistrates during the accounting examination, scheduled at the end of the assignment.

This paper will discuss methodologies, approaches and issues, emerging out of three major research projects that have investigated early histories of video art in Europe: REWIND (2004 ongoing), REWIND Italia (2011-2014) and EWVA (2015-2018). The paper will discuss how the projects have engaged with the history of the apparatus, the identity and status of the artworks, preservation methods, and the legacy of these video artworks today. A particular focus will be on semi-structured questionnaires for interviews structured to capture oral histories, memories and recollections, that in some cases would have been otherwise lost to future knowledge and the uncovering of lost artworks and their available documentation. The speakers - directly involved in the projects - will discuss solutions, risks and experiences encountered in the projects and future research perspectives for re-covering, collecting, archiving and narrating the histories of early video art in Europe. The paper will discuss also different practice-based research methods, platforms and engagement strategies, including re-installation and re-enactment.

The paper will present the detailed account of the Conference Funds and Collections of the person and personality in archives, libraries and museums: a resource, an opportunity, held in Bologna, at the University, October 26, 2016. The Conference was structured in nineteen reports and a final round table and involved librarians, archivists and museum professionals on the treatment of ‘cultural archives’: those cohesive and varied collections, gathered by people during their professional life, or simply out of passion and then given to public or private institutions. The presentation of projects and experiences implemented by various cultural institutions, not only by type but also by institutional affiliation, allowed the large audience to become aware of the Italian mature reflections on this topic. The event was also an opportunity for discussion between traditionally distinct professionals in order to create an advantageous ‘transversal’ dialogue about the management of cultural heritage.

The digital reproduction of archival records involves different rights as the right of scientific reseaech, the right of free expression of thought but also the right to privacy. These rights must be carefully balanced. The relationship between them is analyzed in legal terms, under Italian legislation, and in technological terms, just about the use of the technologies of the digital reproduction of documents, with particular attention to the concepts of communication and dissemination of personal data. The paper shows that the existing regulation framework fully meets the needs of protection of privacy, including in relation to technological changes taking place. Finally it proposes strengthening instruments like the statement of informed consent and the elaboration of specific policies to ensure the highest possible protection.

In the last decades the world has become rapidly smaller with the destruction of spatial barriers known as “globalization.” It is a term both annoying and exhaustive, signifying a syncretic and global perception of reality. This condition has been further made easy by the enormous amount of data made accessible to us. The accelerated transition from an analogue to a digital world has literally invaded us with information creating not only a huge cultural gap between generations, with all its consequences, but offering at the same time huge opportunities. This paper intends to describe how technology, not without obstacles, has changed the way to communicate culture, and to make it more accessible. Our cultural heritage requires technology to be known and furthermore in order to be preserved. Present archives and museums, whether large or small, must move along with times, giving large space to technology and to new professional skills. The protection of our heritage requires communication, which plays a decisive role in making everybody knowledgeable. It is paradigmatic today and a duty to use technologies in order to store, preserve, save and communicate this heritage.

This paper introduces similarities and differences between disciplines dealing with the formal description of cultural heritage. A particular focus is given to the usage of Semantic Web technologies to add value to data. By sharing open data and building a network of relations between cultural objects, the Linked Open Data cloud can be a new tool for disseminating knowledge. A case study on the Fondazione Zeri photo archive is here presented so as to exemplify methods and ontologies adopted for integrating domains.

This paper conjectures that standard archival descriptions are no longer efficient in order to answer to society needs, mainly in an intercultural perspective. After a brief evaluation of the peculiarities of cultural heritage different domain languages, the specific issues of archival descriptions are discussed, seeking the possible strategies - technological as well as cultural - valid to open to an integration of descriptive languages. A particular focus is proposed on RDA, an approach which shows to be the best candidate to harmonize the separate descriptions typical of archival domain and activating the potential informative integrations with any limitation of information environments and single content quality.

When conducting historical research, especially in archives of (state) administrations that hold many documents of a generic nature, one sometimes stumbles onto sources that do not reveal their importance at first sight, but only disclose their relevance over time. In this paper, we will discuss one such a document, unearthed during research on the colonial public healthcare infrastructure in the former Belgian Congo. Entitled “Situation des Constructions C.M.C. au 1-9-1954” and produced by t...
