This paper describes the construction of a 0.25° × 0.25° daily soil temperature (TS) data set at six soil depths (i.e., 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 40 cm) based on a homogenized TS at more than 2,000 meteorological stations across mainland of China for 1960–2017. First, at each station, the observed TS is split into a daily climatology of 1981–2010 and a daily anomaly for 1960–2017. Then, they are respectively interpolated to 0.25° × 0.25° horizontal resolution by using the thin‐plain spline and the angular distance weight interpolation methods. Finally, a gridded multilayer TS data set is constructed from the sum of the above two gridded products. Latitude, longitude, and high‐resolution digital elevation models are explicitly incorporated into the interpolation processes. Selectivity tests indicate that the optimal interpolation distance for the TS anomaly field is 500 km, where the gridded data set may have maximum coverage of the entire Chinese mainland. The results show that the gridded TS climatology is slightly lower than the station observations. The differences between gridded and the station‐based TS varies ±3°C, with relatively large in SW and TIBET. For the gridded anomaly fields, the cross‐validation shows that the mean absolute errors between gridded and station‐based TS are generally less than 0.6°C in the YZ, SW, and SC, but they are above 1.0°C in the NW and TIBET due to the sparse station distribution and large topographic relief. From 1961 to 2016, the seasonal variability of the gridded TS is generally consistent with that of the surface air temperature. The gridded TS over the majority of land displays significantly positive trends in both summer and winter (p > 95%), indicating an overall warming land surface in China. The long‐term gridded TS data not only preserves the spatial features represented in the station observations, but also provides a spatio‐temporal continuous long‐term product of mainland China. Thus, it may be used in future studies, for example, evaluation of land surface model simulations, validation of satellite retrievals, land‐atmosphere interactions, and climate change. The land surface temperature obtained from remote sensing was widely used in the simulation of permafrost mapping instead of air temperature with the rapid development of remote sensing technology. The land surface freezing and thawing index (LFI and LTI), which is commonly regarded as the ground surface freezing and thawing index (GFI and GTI), can produce certain errors in the simulation of permafrost distribution on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. This paper improved the accuracy of the thermal condition of the surface soil in the Qinghai–Tibet Engineering Corridor (QTEC) by calculating the LFI (or LTI) and N-factors. The environmental factors affecting the spatial distribution of the GFI and GTI were detected by the GeoDetector model. Finally, the multiple linear relationships between the GFI (or GTI) and the environmental factors were established. The results from 25 monitoring sites in the QTEC show that the Nf (ratio of GFI to LFI) is 1.088, and the Nt (ratio of GTI to LTI) is 0.554. The explanatory power of the interaction between elevation and latitude for the GFI and GTI is 79.3% and 85.6%, respectively. The multiple linear regression model with six explanatory variables established by GFI (or GTI) has good accuracy. Soil moisture and soil temperature (SMST) are important state variables for quantifying the exchange of heat and water between land and atmosphere. Yet, long-term, regional-scale in situ SMST measurements are scarce on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), with even fewer are available for multiple soil depths. Tibet-Obs is such a long-term, regional-scale SMST observatory in the TP that has been established 10 years ago and includes three SMST monitoring networks, i.e. Maqu, Naqu, and Ngari (including Ali and Shiquanhe), located in the cold humid area covered by grassland, the cold semiarid area dominated by tundra, and the cold arid area dominated by desert, respectively. This paper presents a long-term (∼ 10 years) SMST profile dataset collected from the Tibet-Obs, which includes the original in situ measurements at a 15 min interval collected between 2008 and 2019 from all the three networks and the spatially upscaled data (SM ups and ST ups) for the Maqu and Shiquanhe networks. The quality of the upscaled data is proved to be good, with errors that are generally better than the measured accuracy of adopted SMST sensors. Long-term analysis of the upscaled SMST profile data shows that the amplitudes of SMST variations decrease with increasing soil depth, and the deeper soil layers present a later onset of freezing and an earlier start of thawing and, thus, a shorter freeze–thaw duration in both the Maqu and Shiquanhe networks. In addition, there are notable differences between the relationships of SM ups and ST ups under freezing conditions for the Maqu and Shiquanhe networks. No significant trend can be found for the SM ups profile in the warm season (from May to October) for both networks that is consistent with the tendency of precipitation. A similar finding is also found for the ST ups profile and air temperature in the Shiquanhe network during the warm season. For the cold season (from November to April), a drying trend is noted for the SM ups above 20 cm in the Maqu network, while no significant trend is found for those in the Shiquanhe network. Comparisons between the long-term upscaled data and five reanalysis datasets, including the ECMWF reanalysis v5 (ERA5), Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2), Global Land Data Assimilation System version 2 Catchment Land Surface Model (GLDAS-2.1 CLSM), GLDAS-2.1 Noah, and GLDAS-2.1 variable infiltration capacity (GLDAS-2.1 VIC), indicate that none of the current model-based products can reproduce the seasonal variations and interannual trend changes in the measured SMST profile dynamics in both networks. All the products underestimate the ST ups at every depth, leading to an earlier onset of freezing and a later onset of thawing, which essentially demonstrates that the current models are not able to adequately simulate winter conditions on the TP. • Sand wedge deposits were identified in the Early Miocene Wuqia Group. • Sand wedges occurred in braided fluvial environment under arid and cold climate. • The northern Tibetan Plateau surpassed 1000 m elevation in the Early Miocene. The uplift of the Tibet Plateau and its climatic effects have long been a hot topic in academic research. However, there is still significant controversy regarding the uplift history and related climate changes along the northern margin of the plateau. In this paper, we present sand wedge deposits from the base of the Wuqia Group (∼20 Ma) on the southwestern Tarim Basin, representing the oldest reported sand wedges in the Tibetan Plateau. A comprehensive study was conducted on lithostratigraphy, sedimentary environment, and macroscopic–microscopic features of the sand wedge deposits. The results indicate that the lithostratigraphic succession preserving the sand wedge deposits consists mainly of lenticular conglomerates and cross-bedded gravelly sandstone interbedded with medium–thin-bedded mudstone, consistent with the braided fluvial environment. The sand wedge deposits commonly exhibit a V-shape geometry and are filled with gravelly sandstone, with the gravels arranged parallel to the walls of the wedge. The clasts of the wedge-filled sandstone are well-rounded and show a unimodal grain size distribution. The quartz surfaces commonly display dish-shaped and crescent-shaped impact features, indicating an eolian origin and an arid climate. Based on the relationship between the formation temperature of modern sand wedges, the atmospheric temperature gradient, and altitude, the reconstructed paleo-elevation of the sand wedge deposits at the base of the Wuqia Group in the southwestern Tarim Basin is approximately ∼ 1000 m. These results indicate that the northern margin of the Tibet Plateau had already reached an elevation of ∼ 1000 m during the Early Miocene, forming a seasonal arid and cold climate. Soil water and soil temperature are important ecological factors and driving forces for ecosystem restoration and sustainable development, possessing great significance for climate modeling and prediction. The Hengduan Mountains in southeastern Tibet, China, are located in a climate-change-sensitive area, and the study of soil hydrothermal dynamics in this area is of great significance for local and global climatic change and water resource utilization. This study, based on the soil hydrothermal and meteorological data of the Hengduan Mountain area in Southeast Tibet, analyzes the dynamic change patterns of soil hydrothermal and meteorological factors and explores their influencing relationships. It was found that the dynamic change in soil water content affected by precipitation was "bimodal" type. Among the meteorological factors, soil water content has the strongest correlation with relative humidity. The intra-annual variation curve of soil temperature is similar to that of the atmospheric temperature, showing a "unimodal" type, and has the highest correlation with atmospheric temperature. Specifically, it takes 70 mm and 170 mm of precipitation to change the soil water content and soil temperature at the 150 cm depth. For every 20 °C change in atmospheric temperature, soil temperature above 150 cm changes by an average of 7.2 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lakes on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau (QTP) are widely distributed spatially, and they are mostly seasonally frozen. Due to global warming, the thickness and phenology of the lake ice has been changing, which profoundly affects the regional climate evolution. There are a few studies about lake ice in alpine regions, but the understanding of climatological characteristics of lake ice on the QTP is still limited. Based on a field experiment in the winter of 2022, the thermal conductivity of Qinghai Lake ice was determined as 1.64 W·m−1·°C−1. Airborne radar ice thickness data, meteorological observations, and remote sensing images were used to evaluate a quasi-steady ice model (Leppäranta model) performance of the lake. This is an analytic model of lake ice thickness and phenology. The long-term (1979–2017) ice history of the lake was simulated. The results showed that the modeled mean ice thickness was 0.35 m with a trend of −0.002 m·a−1, and the average freeze-up start (FUS) and break-up end (BUE) were 30 December and 5 April, respectively, which are close to the field and satellite observations. The simulated trend of the maximum ice thickness from 1979 to 2017 (0.004 m·a−1) was slightly higher than the observed result (0.003 m·a−1). The simulated trend was 0.20 d·a−1 for the FUS, −0.34 d·a−1 for the BUE, and −0.54 d·a−1 for the ice duration (ID). Correlation and detrending analysis were adopted for the contribution of meteorological factors. In the winters of 1979–2017, downward longwave radiation and air temperature were the two main factors that had the best correlation with lake ice thickness. In a detrending analysis, air temperature, downward longwave radiation, and solar radiation contributed the most to the average thickness variability, with contributions of 42%, 49%, and −48%, respectively, and to the maximum thickness variability, with contributions of 41%, 45%, and −48%, respectively. If the six meteorological factors (air temperature, downward longwave radiation, solar radiation, wind speed, pressure, and specific humidity) are detrending, ice thickness variability will increase 83% on average and 87% at maximum. Specific humidity, wind, and air pressure had a poor correlation with ice thickness. The findings in this study give insights into the long-term evolutionary trajectory of Qinghai Lake ice cover and serve as a point of reference for investigating other lakes in the QTP during cold seasons. This paper describes 2007/2008 inter-annual changes in runoff from the Zhadang Glacier located on the northern slope of Nyainqêntanglha Range, Tibet, and analyzes their causes. Precipitation increased by 17.9% in summer months of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007, drainage basin runoff decreased by 33.3%, and glacial meltwater decreased by 53.8%. Change in positive accumulated air temperature explained approximately half of the inter-annual difference in glacial meltwater using a degree-day model. This suggests that the glacier is extremely sensitive to changes in air temperature. Energy balance analysis showed that change in glacier surface albedo, considered to be caused by difference in precipitation form, resulted in the large inter-annual difference in glacial meltwater. It was shown statistically that precipitation form in the summer months of 2007 was mainly rainfall which comprised 71.5% of total precipitation, while during the same period in 2008 rainfall accounted for 30.7%, with the majority of precipitation falling as snow. Evaluation of changes in dry-wet climate is crucial in the context of global climate change to ensure regional water resources, ecosystem stability, and socio-economic development. Long-term daily meteorological data, including temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, wind speed, sunshine duration, and air pressure data from 1680 stations across mainland China from 1971 to 2019, were collected to investigate the temporal and spatial variations in aridity index (AI), precipitation (P), reference evapotranspiration (ET0), and the underlying driving climatic factors. Results indicated that the Northwest, Northeast, and Huang-Huai regions were undergoing significant wetting processes, while the Southwest and Southeast China were undergoing significant drying processes. The changing AI was mainly decided by the changing trends of ET0. For most regions, ET0 has undergone significant increases. The average increasing rate over mainland China was 3.76 mm/10a. Stations with decreasing trends were mainly located in the Tibet Plateau, Huang-Huai, and northern Northeast China. Trends in ET0 were negatively affected by the increasing changes in relative humidity and positively affected by the decreasing changes in wind speed and sunshine duration and the increasing changes in air temperature. Wind speed and relative humidity were found to be the main dominant factors driving the changes in ET0, and their contribution varied with regions. Huang-Huai and northern Northeast China showed a significant downward trend in ET0, mainly driven by the decrease in wind speed, while the increase in relative humidity was the primary contributor to the significant upward trends in ET0 across all other regions in China. Sun sheds were once used as an effective roadbed cooling technique in permafrost regions. Numerical and indoor-experiment results have confirmed the cooling effects of the sun-shaded embankments, but field-monitored data are still necessary to evaluate their long-term performance. This paper discusses the cooling effects of a sun shed over a section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway embankment, by examining near-surface air and ground temperatures and the permafrost table depth at the shaded section, at an unshaded embankment section, and in surrounding natural ground. Monitoring results from 2006 to 2010 indicate that the sun shed has lowered near-surface air temperatures and underlying permafrost temperatures beneath the embankment, and promoted permafrost aggradation. The estimated annual heat budget of the permafrost beneath the sun-shaded embankment section has been negative over the past nine years, indicating the sustained cooling performance of the sun shed. This study confirms the utility of sun sheds as an effective design and maintenance concept for infrastructure embankments in warm permafrost regions, provided that the structure can resist harsh environmental conditions. Concentrations of airborne particulate matter with a diameter ≤ 10 µm (PM10) strongly affect local, regional, and global environments, human activities, and human health. The Yarlung Zangbo River in the southern Tibet Plateau creates a serious dust hazard, but there are few detailed field measurements of this region's PM10 emission. To provide more information, we used a laser particle counter to measure PM10 concentrations above grassland floodplains, floodplains with a physical crust, shifting dunes, and shifting sand stabilized by planted trees. We used data from 9 days with a strong dust storm (between February and May 2021) to quantify spatial and temporal differences of PM10 concentration and the effect of meteorological conditions on emission and transport. The daily mean PM10 concentration ranged from 26.9 to 253.3 µg m−3 for a mean wind velocity ranging from 2.1 to 9.7 m s−1, and a maximum wind velocity ranging from 4.6 to 14.7 m s−1. Mean hourly PM10 can reach 800 µg m−3, and hourly wind velocity, air temperature, relative humidity, and soil temperature all affect PM10, but their effects vary spatially. The hourly mean PM10 concentration increased with increasing mean hourly wind velocity above the shifting sand surface, but we found no significant relationships at the floodplain sites. The hourly mean PM10 reached its maximum at a relative humidity of about 30%, with air temperature and soil temperature about 8 °C. Therefore, forecasting dust storms in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin will require knowledge of the land surface characteristics and the critical values of relative humidity and of air and soil temperatures. Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) from lacustrine sediments have been widely used to reconstruct mean annual air temperature (MAAT). Although many proxy calibrations relating brGDGT characteristics have been put forth, these calibrations may produce warm biases when applied to lakes in cold regions. We present an expanded Chinese lake surface sediment brGDGT‐MAAT calibration with 29 new surface samples from cold regions along with 39 previously published from Chinese lakes. We deployed sediment traps in a meromictic lake, Dagze Co, and compared results with previously published data from a dimictic lake, Lake 578 in Greenland, to determine potential seasonal and depth‐dependence of brGDGTs. In the meromictic lake, brGDGTs are primarily produced in the lake bottom water, whereas in the dimictic lake, the brGDGTs are produced throughout the water column and mainly reflect the annual bottom water temperature or mixing season water column temperature. We applied our refined calibration to a sediment core from Western Tibet to examine how fluctuations in temperature influenced the Guge Kingdom over the last 2,000 years. Our record reveals relatively warm temperatures during the Medieval Climate Anomaly, cooling of 2°C to −2°C during the Little Ice Age, warming into the eighteenth century, and stabilization after 1800 CE. The temperature variations coincided with a transition of dynasties in Western Tibet. Temperature sensitivity tests on barley distribution, the principal cultivated cereal in Tibet, suggest that a decline in temperature led to a decreased crop yield that may have factored into the disappearance of the Guge Kingdom. Plain Language Summary: Paleoclimate reconstructions from lake sediments can provide a wealth of information on past climate changes. The accuracy of these reconstructions depends on a modern "translation" between proxies and climate variables. Lacustrine branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) are viewed as a promising tool for reconstructing air temperatures. However, there is not a one‐to‐one correlation between air temperatures and lacustrine brGDGT‐based temperatures; therefore, we have to conduct calibration studies to understand how they are related. In this study, we compared sediment traps in a meromictic and dimictic lake to determine niche partitioning of brGDGTs. Comparisons between core‐top reconstructed and observed water column temperatures show that in meromictic lakes, brGDGTs are primarily produced in the lake bottom water, whereas in the dimictic lakes, they are produced throughout the entire water column and reflect annual bottom water temperatures or water column temperatures during the mixing season. We then establish a new calibration and apply it to a lake sediment record, which indicates that temperatures cooled during 1630 CE. This time period coincides with the disappearance of the Guge Kingdom. Using ecological niche modeling, we confirm that cooling led to a decline in barley, which has likely contributed to the collapse of the Kingdom. On 22 March 2021, an approximately 50 Mm 3 ice-rock avalanche occurred from 6500 m a.s.l. in the Sedongpu basin, southeastern Tibet. The avalanche transformed into a highly mobile mass flow which temporarily blocked the Yarlung Tsangpo river. The avalanche flow lasted ∼ 5 min and produced substantial geomorphological reworking. This event, and previous ones from the basin, occurred concurrently with, or shortly after, positive seasonal air temperature anomalies. The occurrence of future large mass flows from the basin cannot be ruled out, and their impacts must be carefully considered given implications for sustainable hydropower and associated socioeconomic development in the region. Abstract: In recent years, disasters caused by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) have taken place more frequently in Tibet than previously and have been the cause of considerable losses. Temperature fluctuations are believed a major influencing factor of GLOFs. However, if or how much climatic change influences GLOFs is a question that remains to be answered. In this paper, using 24 GLOFs related to 19 glacial lakes and temperature data from 14 meteorological stations, we explored the relationships between temperature variations on different temporal scales (annual, monthly, and daily) and GLOFs. There were three active periods for GLOFs in the 1960s, 1980s and 2000s in Tibet, when 16 of 24 GLOFs took place. All the studied GLOFs occurred in the ablation months (from May and September, and especially in July and August) and on ablation days with a monthly average temperature and daily average temperature that were both greater than 0 °C. Based on the analysis of monthly and daily temperature, GLOFs depend on the coupled influence of ablation temperature and accumulation temperature; even the accumulation temperature may be important. Based on this, temperature increments were defined, representing the change from accumulation to ablation temperature with a significant impact on GLOFs. There is an altitude effect on GLOFs, in that lakes at lower altitude generally burst earlier, whereas those at a higher altitude burst later. We investigate the impact of climate change on Gurenhekou glacier, southern Tibetan Plateau, which is representative of the tens of thousands of mountain glaciers in the region. We apply a three-dimensional, thermomechanically coupled full-Stokes model to simulate the evolution of the glacier. The steep and rugged bedrock geometry requires use of such a flow model.We parameterize the temperature and surface mass-balance (SMB) uncertainties using nearby automatic weather and meteorological stations, 6 year measured SMB data and an energy-balance model for a nearby glacier. Summer air temperature increased at 0.02 K a-1 over the past 50 years, and the glacier has retreated at an average rate of 8.3ma-1. Prognostic simulations suggest an accelerated annual average retreat rate of ∼9.1ma-1 along the central flowline for the next 25 years under continued steady warming. However, regional climate models suggest a marked increase in warming rate over Tibet during the 21st century, and this rate causes about a 0.9±0.3% a-1 loss of glaciated area and 1.1±0.6% a-1 shrinkage of glacier volume. These results, the rather high warming rates predicted and the small sizes of most Tibetan glaciers, suggest that significant numbers of glaciers will be lost in the region during the 21st century. Temperature is one of the primary factors influencing the climate and ecosystem, and examining its change and fluctuation could elucidate the formation of novel climate patterns and trends. In this study, we constructed a generalised temperature zone elevation model (GTEM) to assess the trends of climate change and temporal-spatial differences in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) using the annual and monthly mean temperatures from 1961–2010 at 144 meteorological stations in and near the TP. The results showed the following: (1) The TP has undergone robust warming over the study period, and the warming rate was 0.318°C/decade. The warming has accelerated during recent decades, especially in the last 20 years, and the warming has been most significant in the winter months, followed by the spring, autumn and summer seasons. (2) Spatially, the zones that became significantly smaller were the temperature zones of −6°C and −4°C, and these have decreased 499.44 and 454.26 thousand sq km from 1961 to 2010 at average rates of 25.1% and 11.7%, respectively, over every 5-year interval. These quickly shrinking zones were located in the northwestern and central TP. (3) The elevation dependency of climate warming existed in the TP during 1961–2010, but this tendency has gradually been weakening due to more rapid warming at lower elevations than in the middle and upper elevations of the TP during 1991–2010. The higher regions and some low altitude valleys of the TP were the most significantly warming regions under the same categorizing criteria. Soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is one of the largest fluxes in the global carbon cycle. Therefore small changes in the size of this flux can have a large effect on atmospheric CO2 concentrations and potentially constitute a powerful positive feedback to the climate system. Soil CO2 fluxes in the alpine steppe ecosystem of Northern Tibet and their responses to short-term experimental warming were investigated during the growing season in 2011. The results showed that the total soil CO2 emission fluxes during the entire growing season were 55.82 and 104.31 g C m-2 for the control and warming plots, respectively. Thus, the soil CO2 emission fluxes increased 86.86% with the air temperature increasing 3.74°C. Moreover, the temperature sensitivity coefficient (Q10) of the control and warming plots were 2.10 and 1.41, respectively. The soil temperature and soil moisture could partially explain the temporal variations of soil CO2 fluxes. The relationship between the temporal variation of soil CO2 fluxes and the soil temperature can be described by exponential equation. These results suggest that warming significantly promoted soil CO2 emission in the alpine steppe ecosystem of Northern Tibet and indicate that this alpine ecosystem is very vulnerable to climate change. In addition, soil temperature and soil moisture are the key factors that controls soil organic matter decomposition and soil CO2 emission, but temperature sensitivity significantly decreases due to the rise in temperature. High-pressure mafic granulites with a peak mineral assemblage of garnet + clinopyroxene + rutile + quartz were found in the Amdo basement, central Tibet. Two kinds of symplectites were identified that are composed of orthopyroxene + plagioclase ± spinel and hornblende + plagioclase around garnet, which were interpreted to develop during the retrogressing stages in the granulites. P-T estimates suggested that peak metamorphic conditions were about 860--920°C and 1.46--1.56 GPa, which retrogressed from post-peak phase at 820--890°C and 0.88--1.15 GPa to amphibolite facies at 550--670°C and 0.52--0.65 GPa. These three stages define a clockwise P-T path with near-isothermal decompression and cooling following the peak high-pressure metamorphism. This suggests that the Amdo granulites underwent an initial subduction to a deep crustal level of ~50 km and then were rapidly exhumed to a shallow crustal level (~20 km). The formation of Amdo granulites is considered to result from the arc-continent collision between the Amdo basement and the Qiangtang terrane in the middle Jurassic, which is a crucial step to the tectonic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau. The history of late Holocene glacier fluctuations in eastern Tibet was studied by determining the ages of trees growing on glacier deposits. Maximum tree ages yield minimum ages of AD 1760 and 1780 for moraine formation at the maximum extent of the 'Little Ice Age' glacier advances in two glacier forefields. Subsequent moraines could be dated to the beginning of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Larch trees from a third glacier forefield in southeastern Tibet show evidence of glacier activity from 1580 to 1590, from the end of the eighteenth to the beginning of the nineteenth century and from 1860 to 1880. One glacier at Mt Gyalaperi recently advanced in both 1951 and 1987. Periods of glacier advances can partly be correlated with periods of growth reductions in chronologies of total ring width and maximum latewood density derived from trees growing on slopes above the glacier valleys. Correlation functions with meteorological data suggest that maximum latewood density of subalpine Picea balfouriana, Larix griffithii and Abies delavayi var. motouensis is positively correlated with summer temperature, while ring width of these species and of subalpine Juniperus tibetica is also sensitive to winter conditions prior to the growing season.
