Purpose: Some studies have claimed that Chinese thinker Hu Shi (or Hu Shih) received and responded to John Dewey's educational ideas only at a theoretical level and did little for education at a practical level. This paper reexamines Hu's reception of Dewey's ideas with a focus on how he used those ideas to solve China's educational and social problems during the late 1910s and 1920s. Design/methodology/approach: This paper draws upon what Schriewer (2012) has called "theories of reception." Rather than focusing on the international dissemination of ideas and knowledge, this approach emphasizes the reception of foreign ideas from the perspective and needs of the receiver, interpreter and/or reader who apprehends such ideas within a particular socio-cultural context. Findings: This paper finds that Hu not only received -- and examined -- Dewey's educational ideas in a systematic way, but also used them pragmatically to reform China's systems of education as part of the New Culture Movement after 1919. Originality/value: This research offers a new understanding of Hu's reception of Dewey's educational ideas. It shows that Hu was not merely a "thinker" in the field of education but also a "doer" who sought to apply Dewey's ideas in practice. This new view allows us to reevaluate Hu's role in the modernization of Chinese education.

Purpose: The paper aims to explore the emotion learning experiences of some Chinese immigrants in Canadian engineering workplaces. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on life history style interviews with 14 Chinese immigrant engineers and 14 key informant interviews. Findings: Research respondents constructed a competitive, masculine, and individualistic engineering "culture" in Canada, where the emotional and the relational, supposedly central to the Asian and Chinese culture, are largely devalued. To fit into the individualistic culture, some Chinese immigrants learned to change their patterns of socialization and some became hard-nosed competitors. To ameliorate the deleterious effects of the alienating workplace environments, some resorted to their cultural teaching to maintain emotional health; some also tried to build collegiality and collectivity to humanize their work settings. Research limitations/implications: The study was not a comprehensive study of the emotion work in engineering workplaces. It does not capture the emotional order that may as well exist to afford different people differential negotiation power in the engineering culture. Social implications: The study suggests that while emotional connection and personalized relationship are "culturally" discouraged in engineering workplaces, they are of significant use value for immigrant workers and should be addressed to create humanized work environments. Originality/value: This is one of the few articles that examine emotion learning at the intersection of gender, race and class relations. (Contains 1 note.)

After Deng Xiaoping's 1978 reform and opening, foreigners had a chance to see adult education in China. As a result, many met Yao Zhongda, Chief of the Bureau of Workers' and Peasants Education. From 1921 onwards, adult education has been a vital corollary of Communist revolution. Although Yao's biography was extremely relevant to what foreigners saw, few knew much about their host. Yao made enthusiastic responses to Roby Kidd's efforts to "open" China to the Toronto-based International Council of Adult Education. By 2013, he was 88 years old. The primary purpose of this paper was to capture his biography and reflect on what it means for 21st century China. A secondary purpose was to alert Beijing scholars to the importance of this key actor in the colourful drama of globalization and adult education in China.

This article presents an interview with Professor Gui Shichun, a well-known figure in the academic field in China. Professor Shichun is credited with being the first scholar who introduced applied linguistics studies into China. He has established several other records of "the first in China," hence has long been called "the brave pioneering explorer" in his field in his country. He also established and held the first national symposium on applied linguistics and English teaching in 1980 and the first international symposium on foreign language teaching in China in 1985. Further, in 1978, he also started advocating the application of international mainstream language testing theories and established the nation-wide English Proficiency Test (EPT) in China. Over the years, he has supervised many MA students as well as Ph.D. students who are now very active in the field of language testing and applied linguistics. In the interview, Professor Shichun talks about his career history and shares his experience that made him switch to applied linguistics. (Contains 2 footnotes.)

Records of individuals who achieved rebirth in the pure land of Amitãbha Buddha began as a genre of hagiography in eighth-century China and began appearing in Japan in the late tenth century. Thereafter these ōjōden were produced repeatedly throughout Japanese history in greater numbers than in China, and came to function as a form of prooftext for the establishment of the Pure Land school. Focusing on an apocryphal Indian ōjōden created in the late Heian period, this paper evaluates the form and content of ōjōden as a unique genre of Japanese religious literature exhibiting influences from monastic bibliography, miracle texts, and the category of adbhutadharma in Indian Buddhist literature. A biography of Shi Yafeng, an academician and the father of glaciology in China is presented. Shi began as a young geomorphologist and became a legendary glaciologist with 50 years of contributions to glaciological science. Shi Yafeng has been head of the Glaciology and Geocryology Division in the Institute of Geography. He was born in March 1919 in Haimen City, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from the Department of Geography, Zhejiang University in 1942.

The article explores the life and literary works of author Jiang Yingke. He was born in Taoyuan, Huguang province in China and attained his jinshi status in 1592. As for his civil service career, he worked as magistrate of Changzhou district in Suzhou prefecture and as Director of the Bureau of Evaluation in the Ministry of Personnel. His works include "Xuetaoge ji," a short collection of prose and poetry completed in 1600, "Huang Ming shiliuzhong xiaozhuan," a collection of biographical sketches, and "Xuetao si xiaoshu," an anthology of jottings, anecdotes, poetry criticism, and jokes.

This article reports that there has been a marked increase in the publication of biographies and works of reportage related to the Chinese Communist Party and state leaders. This has created something of a publishing phenomenon and there is every indication that it will continue to develop. Periodicals have featured in the present publishing frenzy, and publishers are in competition to produce works of reportage on the lives of the nation's leaders. Because of Comrade Mao Zedong's unique role in the Chinese revolution it is understandable that he is the focus of such attention. At the same time, interest in Mao Zedong reflects a deep reverence for the achievements of Older Revolutionaries in general, their outstanding political morals and frugal lifestyle. This public interest has been further grown by the fact that because political life in China was not sufficiently open to public scrutiny, the leaders have, in both their political and private lives, worked under a cloak of mystery. Some works make a point of dwelling on the details of Mao Zedong's early married life. There are also works that negate entirely the political struggles that occurred after 1949, including the "Suppression of Counterrevolutionaries," as well as the "Three-Anti and the Five-Anti Campaigns."

This article explores a succession of biographies of Zhu Yuanzhang, founder of the Ming dynasty. It highlights the three versions of the biography of Zhu written by Wu Han. It notes the recognition received by the biography from Ming historians despite the emergence of biographies from other writers. It also explores the circumstances in which the biographies were written. Some essays on the rise and consolidation of Ming power are discussed. In addition, the article addresses the impact of the development of modern biography on the writing of biographies of Zhu.

A biography of Tak-Hang Chan, a scientist, is presented. He was born on June 28, 1941 in Hong Kong, China and studied at University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ontario. He then went to University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario to complete his under graduation and also worked part time. Later he completed his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Chemistry at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. Presently he is engaged in research related to pharmaceutical chemistry.
