The grand challenges that humanity faces—poverty, inequality, hunger, conflict, climate change, deforestation, and pandemics, among others—hinder the progress of sustainable development. These issues can be addressed only by fundamental changes in behavior, as well as in the modes and processes of production and of business more generally. In this paper we will develop the concept of responsible innovation and discuss the potential and limitations of various models of corporate governance with regard to responsible innovation. Our analysis imports from the political sciences theoretical and empirical insights into how alternative forms of participative and reflexive governance can help address the social and environmental challenges that society faces. The paper thereby offers examples of innovative corporate governance that can help to generate innovations that do good and avoid harm. Discourse in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic explored its likely effects on the tourism sector including the nature of recovery. Viewed through the lens of Evolutionary Economic Geography, this paper examines the preferences of four stakeholder groups for future tourism development in Northern Devon. Specifically, it reports on their views from 2021 and 2022 of three potential scenarios which were elaborated before the pandemic, and it explores whether COVID-19 was a trigger event for a change in trajectory. There was consistent support for the most sustainable trajectory, which represented the continuation of the existing arc of development, not a fundamental change in direction triggered by COVID-19. Not only does this finding contribute a retrospective critique of early opinions on possible COVID-induced change, it suggests an alternative view of the role of trigger events in destination evolution. The pandemic offered space for reflection on tourism development, as a form of 'mindful continuation' of transformation, not a 'mindful deviation' identified in some previous studies. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to answer the question: does the pandemic affect the ability to achieve the sustainable development goals? Design/methodology/approach: The article analyzes selected, available literature on sustainable development, from the genesis of the phenomenon to the current situation. It invoked, among other things, the idea of the European Green Deal. The most current issues related to the pandemic reality were addressed. The themes and changes highlighted are based on data from available reports and statistical analyses. Findings: By the time the pandemic broke out, the sustainability goals had been achieved gradually. But the pandemic has forced policymakers to think long-term. The conditions for transition to the green economy, i.e. the green transition, have also become crucial. In many countries, including Poland, the need for better achievement of social goals in addition to economic or environmental ones has become apparent. Further work is needed to achieve the sustainable development goals. Research limitations/implications: The text refers to a limited number of studies. The problems presented in the paper still need to be empirically confirmed in relation to a greater number of examples, which should result in the publication of subsequent studies. It will also be necessary to fully diagnose the post-pandemic situation and retrace the threads taken up. COVID‐19 pandemic is still one of the biggest obstacles to meeting the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Helping the world retrieve from the pandemic and reviving activities require expeditiously examining the comprehensive SDG schemes. This paper draws on existing information and a thorough examination of the research to emphasize continuing challenges confronting the SDGs. It also determines the impact of COVID‐19 on sustainable development goal advancements and suggest a standardized framework to encourage the accomplishment of them in the post‐pandemic era. Before the pandemic started, the advancement toward accomplishing the SDGs was lagging. Global problems and the unequal supply of food, water and energy evidently pose a threat to the achievement of the SDGs. An evaluation is provided on the execution of the SDGs and factors such as the instability of the global political climate, geographical disparities, and exchange. Additionally, an insight is provided for post‐pandemic SDG actions on "Classification‐Coordination‐Collaboration" template in order to better understand the global picture. The current state of advancement is presented based on the emergency of SDG accomplishments considering regulations through categorization with science and research, which can realign the SDGs to their original course. The analysis suggests that attaining the SDGs necessitates a coordinated effort from all stakeholders, and collaboration is crucial to bolstering economic relations, encouraging technical development, and constructing a sustainable world. The 2023 SDG Summit, which will take place in September during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly high-level week, aims to review the state of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. As 2023 marks the mid-point to 2030, this meeting aims to respond to the impact of multiple and interlocking crises facing the world. The COVID-19 pandemic is only one of these critical crises. The pandemic meant an enormous backlash for the implementation of most SDGs, as discussed in the UN Secretary-General's mid-term progress report "Toward a Rescue Plan for People and Planet." Therefore, it is at once an important background to the Summit and one that highlights the common overarching structural issues that underlie SDG implementation, as the pandemic not only posed a global health crisis but also led to lasting changes in policy areas concerning the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda, such as health, mobility, trade, industry, finance, and sustainability. This paper engages with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the practices of the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) and the short-term policy narratives around the SDGs. Its goal is to document some of the changes the pandemic triggered in practices of sustainability governance, based on the findings of a 4-year project that draws on qualitative analysis of participatory observations at the HLPF meetings, document analysis, and in-depth interviews. The COVID-19 pandemic has had many deep social and economic impacts that go beyond health issues. One consequence is that the pandemic has made it even harder to mobilize the financial resources needed to pursue SDG 13 (Climate Action) as a whole and to fund climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts in particular. This is especially acute in respect of the efforts to achieve the targets set by the Paris Agreement and by the recent decisions in Glasgow. This paper looks at how the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated poverty and undermined climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, as a result of the switches in priorities and funding. Using a review of the recent literature, an analysis of international trends, and a survey among climate scientists, it identifies some of the impacts of the pandemic on climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts and discusses their implications. The findings indicate a decrease in funding to climate change research since the pandemic crisis. The bibliometric analysis reveals that a greater emphasis has been placed on the relationship between COVID-19 and poverty when compared to the interrelations between COVID-19 and climate change. Addressing climate change is as urgent now as it was before the pandemic crisis started, and efforts need to be made to upkeep the levels of funding needed to support research in this field. The aim of this paper was to examine whether the COVID-19 epidemic has slowed the fulfilment of one of the core tasks of the energy sector "Ensure Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy for All" (SDG7) taking into account corporate social responsibility. Four research questions and hypotheses were posed, relating to the perspectives of local authorities, the activities of large energy companies, the impact of the epidemic on the implementation of the SDG7 and, in addition, to the understanding of CSR principles from the point of view of ordinary entrepreneurs. A qualitative descriptive analysis based on two reliable databases and a survey procedure (Question 4) was used to answer the research questions posed. The goal was achieved by positively confirming three hypotheses and testing one negatively, relating to COVID-19's slowing role in SDG7 implementation. The analysis showed that the 2020–2021 epidemic in Poland has led to more initiatives in this area, contrary to expectations. However, they were linked to the simultaneous implementation of other SDGs, which distorted their importance for achieving Goal 7. In summary, although energy companies were more active than expected during the epidemic, they had a low contribution to SDG 7. This also applies to local authorities. An analysis of the knowledge about CSR in a group of entrepreneurs from the Lublin district (case study) confirmed the opinion appearing in the literature about the lack of understanding of the concept and the need for its application. The crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic has prompted governments and central banks to take unorthodox measures aimed at protecting the standard of living of people and sustaining the production and service activities of companies. The policy of aggressively increasing the supply of money has entailed a significant rise in the budget deficit and public debt. It is important to consider the extent of its impact on the escalation of inflation processes and to formulate suggestions regarding the economic policy. Inflation is already higher than the official indicators show it, because it is partly suppressed. The increase in the general price level does not fully reflect the actual inflation rate. We are dealing with shortageflation – the simultaneous occurrence of price inflation and repressed inflation accompanied by shortages. It is methodologically interesting to compare this current phenomenon, 3.0, with the suppression of inflation in the war economy, 1.0, and in the economies of state socialism, 2.0. Such comparisons highlight not only the similarities of these processes but also the differences resulting from the specificity of responses of households and businesses. This paper discusses five channels of unloading excessive savings, indicating the most beneficial ones from the point of view of sustainable economic development in the post-pandemic future. It is particularly important to prompt the conversion of compulsory savings into voluntary savings, and at the same time, to stimulate the transformation of the inflationary monetary reserves into the effective demand expanding the use of existing production capacities and investments creating new capacities. The world entered the post-COVID-19 era of coexistence with viruses, but people are still concerned as to whether there will be another virus outbreak in the future. Research on virus defense in the construction field is still underway, and considerable suggestions were proposed. If it seems these suggestions were adopted in many buildings, why is the pandemic still out of control? The main focus of this study is to explore a sustainable design strategy that should be adopted by apartment-style buildings in the post-pandemic era in terms of media, sensory, and action elements, and to analyze the applicability of these measures in specific buildings. The study analyzes cases of high-rise apartment-style buildings and used methods such as simulation analysis, direct observation, and comparative analysis to compare the design measures before and after the pandemic. The study shows that, while these measures mainly affect the environmental and social aspects of sustainability, some aspects of old buildings remain difficult to address. The existing standards of new building design need to be adjusted to make the necessary changes. Through our analysis, we concluded that, although the original green building system provides a good foundation for the adjustment of housing in the post-pandemic era, residential design should provide a more reliable framework for possible future pandemic defense. The study is based on the collation of research conducted by architects and experts, and presented in the relevant literature, and the specific analysis of completed apartment buildings within the context of the pandemic situation. This study provides a direction for apartment buildings to meet the challenges of sustainable development and paves the way for a clearer future in the field of construction building. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the post-covid-19 pandemic quality of life (QoL), body composition and physical activity (PA), and to investigate the gender differences in this relationship among college students. The article presents the results of a study on the impact of physical activity and body composition on the quality of life after the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on sports department students. The study aims to comprehensively understand this complex phenomenon and provide significant insights for the academic community and the broader society. Design/methodology/approach: The experimental study included a group of 54 women (age 22 ± 1.63) and 89 men (age 22 ± 1.85). The study included an examination of body composition and BMI and two questionnaires on physical activity level and quality of life. Body composition and BMI analysis was performed using a SECA mBCA 515 (seca GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg, Germany) with eight electrodes. The same group also completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Version (IPAQ-SF) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). Findings: The primary findings of this study highlight notable gender disparities in Quality of Life (QoL), physical activity, and body composition among college students following a series of study interruptions and one year of remote learning due to Covid-19. The research revealed that young women exhibited relatively higher levels of physical activity during the pandemic, resulting in better performance on body composition tests compared to the men in the study. Despite the adverse conditions brought about by the pandemic, including the closure of sports facilities and gyms, the authors did not observe any negative changes in women's body composition after 12 months. Conversely, significant and observable changes were noted in men's body composition. Furthermore, the women in the study reported relatively higher QoL levels compared to men in various aspects, including the physical, psychological, social relations, and environmental domains, following the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings of this research may provide valuable insights into the long-term effects of the pandemic on young individuals. It may also offer recommendations for universities, policymakers on how to support and enhance the quality of life for students as they navigate the unique challenges of a post-pandemic society. Research limitations/implications: The main limitation of the included study is a relatively small research group. In future studies, it is also possible to refer to different culturally diverse groups. In this study, the research group was culturally homogeneous, which can also be considered as a research limitation. Originality/value: The enhanced quality of life observed in women is likely attributed to their higher level of physical activity, a conclusion supported by research on body composition. Conducting gender-specific analyses of quality of life data, including studies related to COVID-19 and other specific investigations into sex differences, is of utmost importance. Having insights into these gender disparities in quality of life would serve as a crucial resource for comprehending the effects of a health crisis on both individuals and communities. It would also aid in the development of effective and equitable policies, public health initiatives, and targeted strategies necessary for achieving sustainable development. The crisis in tourism must be understood as an unforeseen event whose character affects the normal course of tourism and which reduces or cancels tourist arrivals (UNWTO, 2013). The paper presents a brief analysis of the measures adopted at international, European and national level in order to combat the effects of the Covid pandemic on tourism. At the same time, another objective of the study is to present viable solutions that can help restart tourism in our country. For example, the promotion of lesser-known natural and anthropogenic tourism objectives must be a priority and an opportunity for the sustainable development of tourism in times of crisis. The Romanian tourist offer can meet the tourists who are looking for less established tourist objectives and as such, less crowded. Another objective is to present a list of expectations of the tourism consumer, imposed by the pandemic context (health security, lack of congestion, peace), expectations that are also required as solutions to restart tourism. Tourists are reoriented, preferring family or individual tourism trips to green destinations and villages with special architecture, traditional cuisine and small accommodation units. The impact of COVID-19 on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) continues to be researched. Initial signals warn of significant setbacks in achieving SDG targets by 2030. The achievement of SDGs could abet improved protection from future pandemics. This article suggests reprioritizing SDGs to facilitate a more robust global response to future pandemics. Specifically, we recommend that SDGs 3, 6, 5 and 4 (in that order) are prioritized in order to optimize efforts at a more inclusive and resilient socio-economic recovery post-pandemic. This paper suggests that mandatory CSR regimes enable governments, in combination with corporate fiscal resources, to influence the selection and progress of these SDGs. The case of India's mandatory CSR regime is employed to illustrate our position. This study extends the debate on SDGs by raising the possibility of universal concentration on a few critical SDGs. The global spread of the COVID-19 virus has led to difficulties in many branches of the economy, including significant effects on the urban transport industry. Thus, countries around the world have introduced different mobility policies during the pandemic. Due to government restrictions and the changed behaviors of transport users, companies providing modern urban mobility solutions were forced to introduce new business practices to their services. These practices are also apparent in the context of the electric shared mobility industry. Although many aspects and problems of electric shared mobility have been addressed in scientific research, pandemic scenarios have not been taken into account. Noticing this research gap, we aimed to update a previously developed model of factors that influence the operation of electric shared mobility by incorporating aspects related to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on this industry. This article aims to identify the main factors influencing the electric shared mobility industry during the COVID-19 and post-lockdown periods, together with their operation areas and the involved stakeholders. The research was carried out on the basis of expert interviews, social network analysis (SNA), and the use of the R environment. The article also presents sustainable transport management recommendations for cities and transport service operators, which can be implemented after a lockdown caused by an epidemic. The results in this paper can be used to support transport modeling and the creation of new policies, business models, and sustainable development recommendations. Global responses to COVID-19 will impact on delivery of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, creating large uncertainties just at the time efforts need to be accelerated. This paper explores how COVID-19 could impact the success of meeting the targets with priority given to the four 'foundational' goals: SDG 1 No Poverty; SDG3 Good Health; SDG 14 Life Below Water and SDG 15 Life on Land as these are critical in maintaining a healthy human and environmental resource base on which progress towards all goals can be built. A scenario analysis examines futures across a spectrum in which i) social and health imperatives (lives) dominate, to ii) where economic imperatives (livelihoods) take precedence. Similarly levels of international co-operation are considered ranging from international recognition of urgent global agendas to fragmentation due to the isolation of individual states around national priorities. These give rise to 4 scenarios: a) Global Well-being Prioritized b) World Trade Recovers c) Poverty Gaps Widen c) Earth Systems in Danger and the likelihood of achieving the foundational SDGs in each is discussed. The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on the 11th of March 2020, but the world is still reeling from its aftermath. Originating from China, cases quickly spread across the globe, prompting the implementation of stringent measures by world governments in efforts to isolate cases and limit the transmission rate of the virus. These measures have however shattered the core sustaining pillars of the modern world economies as global trade and cooperation succumbed to nationalist focus and competition for scarce supplies. Against this backdrop, this paper presents a critical review of the catalogue of negative and positive impacts of the pandemic and proffers perspectives on how it can be leveraged to steer towards a better, more resilient low-carbon economy. The paper diagnosed the danger of relying on pandemic-driven benefits to achieving sustainable development goals and emphasizes a need for a decisive, fundamental structural change to the dynamics of how we live. It argues for a rethink of the present global economic growth model, shaped by a linear economy system and sustained by profiteering and energy-gulping manufacturing processes, in favour of a more sustainable model recalibrated on circular economy (CE) framework. Building on evidence in support of CE as a vehicle for balancing the complex equation of accomplishing profit with minimal environmental harms, the paper outlines concrete sector-specific recommendations on CE-related solutions as a catalyst for the global economic growth and development in a resilient post-COVID-19 world. Technology is shifting not only how the tourism industry is run but also the nature of work, working conditions and management control. This article examines the potential implications of technology-driven transformations on lower-paid lower-skilled tourism workers. With tourism expected to be the sector most affected by intelligent automation, greater attention needs to be given to the variegated impact on the workforce. Drawing on the concepts of surveillance capitalism, disruptive innovation and techno-solutionism, the article problematises these transformations and unpacks the rhetoric used by tourism and technology companies. Situating the discussion within UN Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG8), the article explores how – without proactive regulatory measures and worker-centric approaches – the expansion of intelligent automation in tourism workplaces risks exacerbating inequalities and precarisation of lower-skilled workers, exposing them to job losses and dislocation, dehumanising their role and gradually automating them out. Additionally, digital surveillance may shift power further towards employers, reducing worker agency and impacting on worker wellbeing. Overall, despite clear benefits, unfettered intelligent automation and digital surveillance risk disrupting established worker rights and protections and inadvertently moving the tourism sector away from the ideals of decent work for all. The COVID-19 pandemic marked an important breakthrough in human progress: from working habits to social life, the world population's behaviours changed according to the new lifestyle requirements. In this changing environment, university courses and learning methods evolved along with other "remote" working activities. For this quasi-experimental study, we discuss the effectiveness of the changes made by the LUMSA University in Rome, comparing two different groups of students who attended a master's course with blended and fully remote methodologies. Here, we focused our attention on the paradigm shift, comparing the data gathered during the blended course in the 2019/2020 academic year with data gathered during the same course, but conducted fully online, in the academic year 2020/2021. Considering the sample size and type, the group comparison was made using a non-parametric test (U-test). The statistical analysis results suggest that there was no substantial difference between the students' performance, confirming that the course changes made to adapt to the pandemic situation were successful and that learning effectiveness was preserved. Purpose: The recent outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has severely disrupted the operations of global supply chains (SCs) providing an opportunity for decision-makers to rethink and tune their existing strategies. To tackle the impacts caused by such a pandemic, this study aims to examine the contextual relations among the factors influencing supply chain viability (SCV) for achieving long-term Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Design/methodology/approach: A decision-aid approach by integrating Pareto analysis, grey theory and total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) has been propounded. The proposed approach examines contextual relations among the factors for SCV for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an emerging economy. This study contributes to theory, methodology and practice by exploring a new research problem in the context of the SCV and COVID-19 pandemic and by developing a new decision-aid approach. Findings: The findings reveal that the creation of SC digital twin and transformation of SCs to supply networks would help the policymakers to deal with the "new normal." Also, SC crowdfunding and policy development for health protocols are critical driving factors influencing SCV. The World is facing its worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The promotion of sustainable and inclusive economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all is undermined by the consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic. Food security is linked to the majority of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study aims to draw attention to the role of the food security objective, which is based on reliable, equitable and sustainable food systems that benefit from modern and equitable agricultural technologies. Food (in)security negatively affects human physical, social and economic development throughout life and is a significant environmental disruptor with serious consequences for planetary health. In this article, the authors propose the links between food security and sustainable development goals taking pandemic crisis into account to gain novel insights on whether and how recovery policies can be implemented simultaneously, which may lead to more nuanced findings in the global solution of SDGs.
