Continuous monitoring of soil quality is vital to understand the effects and to identify best management practices for sustainable agroecosystems. This study focuses on evaluating the soil quality and crop yield sustainability in a long-term maize-wheat cropping system experiment spanning 47 years. Physical, chemical, and biological soil quality indicators were assessed at two soil depths (0–0.15 m and 0.15–0.30 m) under eleven fertilizer and amendment regimes i.e., 50 % NPK, 100 % NPK, 150 % NPK, 100 % NPK + Zn, 100 % NPK+ hand weeding, 100 % NP, 100 % N, 100 % NPK + farmyard manure (FYM), 100 % NPK(S), 100 % NPK + lime and control, laid out in a completely randomized block design. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to select a minimum data set (MDS) of indicators for soil quality assessment, followed by weighted additive approach to calculate the soil quality index (SQI). Results showed that balanced dose of NPK fertilizers, in combination with FYM or lime, enhanced average wheat grain yield by 39.9 and 29.4 % over sole 100 % NPK fertilizers, respectively. Treatment 100 % NPK + FYM recorded a significant improvement in aggregate stability, available nutrients, microbial biomass over control and 100 % NPK. The highest value of SQI (0–0.15 m) was recorded in 100 % NPK + FYM (0.99), followed by 100 % NPK + lime (0.86) and lowest in 100 % N (0.41). Omission of NPK, PK, K and S from fertilizer regime caused a decline of respective 33, 39, 22 and 6 % in the SQI, whereas, all the treatments recorded a decline in SQI in sub-surface layer. The average contribution of MDS towards the SQI of 0–0.15 and 0.15–0.30 m depth was labile carbon (LC) (30 %) > microbial biomass N (MBN) (28 %) > mean weight diameter (MWD) (17 %) > pH (16 %) > available K (6 %) and LC (33 %) > N mineralization (24 %) > MWD (22 %) > pH (21 %), respectively. The SQI positively correlated with average grain yield and SYI, highlighting the importance of soil quality for sustainable crop production. Liming materials are widely applied to alleviate soil acidification and increase rice yield in acidic soils, but their effects on nitrogen (N) use efficiency are still unclear. Here, we conducted a field-, pot-, and micro-plot experiment to investigate how the application of slaked lime (i.e., Ca(OH) 2) affects the fate of chemical fertilizer-N and straw-N in a double rice cropping system. In the field experiment, liming increased grain yield and N uptake by an average of 9.0% and 10.6%, respectively. In contrast, CaCl 2 application did not affect rice yield and N uptake, suggesting that the effects of lime application were not related to the addition of Ca2+. Results from a 15N tracer experiment (i.e., 15N-labeled urea and straw) indicated that liming reduced N uptake from fertilizer (−5.7%), but increased N uptake from straw (+31.3%). Liming also reduced soil retention of both urea- and straw-N and increased their loss rates. Taken together, our results indicate that although liming increases rice yield and N uptake, it lowers the use efficiency of fertilizer N and facilitates N losses. Abstract An 18-year field experiment was conducted on a highly acidic soil in the mixed farming zone of south-eastern Australia. The experiment was a fully phased design with three major treatment contrasts: perennial systems versus annual systems; unlimed versus limed treatments; and permanent pasture versus pasture-crop rotations. The hypotheses tested in this study were that a) perennial systems would be less acidifying than annual systems, and b) surface liming would lead to amelioration of subsurface soil acidity over time. Results showed that there was no significant difference in soil pH in terms of acidification rate and amelioration rate between perennial and annual systems, thus we rejected the first hypothesis. However, both perennial and annual systems did acidify or re-acidify soil. The re-acidification rate was at least 0.09 pH units per year in the 0–0.10 m depth under the limed treatment. The acidification rate was 0.005 pH units per year in the 0.10–0.20 m depth under the unlimed treatment. The vigorous lime regime of maintaining pH ≥5.5 (measured in 0.01 M CaCl 2) in the 0–0.10 m depth increased soil pH in the 0.10–0.20 m depth at a rate of the 0.04 pH units per year, hence we accepted the second hypothesis. There was clear evidence of alkali movement vertically over time, but it was confined within the top 0.30 m depth over the 18-year period of experiment. It is recommended that soil should be limed regularly to maintain pH ≥5.5 to keep the system productive and sustainable. A significant area in Brazil is covered with degraded pasturelands, which could be more appropriately used under no-till system. These soils are highly acid and physically fragile, and then there is a need to identify a better liming strategy that will improve the establishment of no-till systems. We hypothesized that the surface application of lime would be more efficient to alleviate soil acidity on degraded pastureland soils. A 4-year field trial examined the effect of a lime application (4.8 Mg ha −1 ) that had either been incorporated (0–20 cm) or surface-applied to an acid sandy loam Oxisol, originally under degraded pasture in Southern Brazil. Control treatments (no-lime) were applied with and without soil disturbance. A black oat ( Avena strigosa Schreb) – soybean ( Glycine max L. Merrill) cropping sequence was used for 4 years after no-till establishment. Soil chemical attributes, plant nutrient uptake, black oat dry biomass production and soybean grain yield were assessed. Soil acidity amelioration was achieved either by incorporating the lime or applying it onto the soil surface. Lime incorporation resulted in a faster neutralization reaction, whereas surface-applied lime provided longer lasting soil profile benefits. At 0–5 cm layer, both tillage treatments, especially with lime application, provided lower soil organic carbon levels than no-till treatments, with or without lime application, until the second year. These differences in soil organic carbon levels were not observed at the end of evaluation, after 4 years, probably because the residual tillage effect disappeared. Over time, the soil organic carbon levels at 5–10 cm layer were slightly increased or maintained close to the initial level, regardless of treatment. Overall, the plants responded to lime application, with an increase by 35% on soybean yield, regardless of the application method. Surface liming provided better economic returns than incorporated liming. Lime incorporation is not recommended in degraded lands due to the risks of SOC losses with soil disturbance and rapid pH increase. Despite of high soil acidity before no-till cultivation, the surface application of lime was the best alternative for alleviating soil acidity when establishing a no-till system on degraded pastureland. Upland rice is an important crop in the cropping systems of South America, including Brazil. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine influence of lime and gypsum on yield and yield components of upland rice and changes in the chemical properties of an Oxisol. The lime rates used were 0, 0.71, 1.42, 2.14, 2.85, and 4.28 g kg−1soil. The gypsum rates were 0, 0.28, 0.57, 1.14, 1.71, and 2.28 g kg−1. Lime as well as gypsum significantly increased plant height, straw and grain yield, and panicle density in a quadratic fashion. Adequate lime and gypsum rates for maximum grain yield were 1.11 g kg−1and 1.13 g kg−1, respectively. Plant height, straw yield, and panicle density were positively related to grain yield. Lime as well as gypsum application significantly changed extractable calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), hydrogen (H)+aluminum (Al), base saturation, and effective cation exchange capacity. In addition, liming also significantly increased pH, extractable phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), calcium saturation, magnesium saturation, and potassium saturation. Optimum acidity indices for the grain yield of upland rice were pH 6.0, Ca 1.7 cmolckg−1, base saturation 60%, and calcium saturation 47%. A field experiment investigating amendments of organic material including farmyard manure, paper factory sludge and crop residues combined with fly ash, lime and chemical fertilizer in a rice-peanut cropping system was conducted during 1997-98 and 1998-99 at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. The soil was an acid lateritic (Halustaf) sandy loam. For rice, an N:P:K level of 90:26.2:33.3 kg ha-1 was supplied through the organic materials and chemical fertilizer to all the treatments except control and fly ash alone. The required quantities of organic materials were added to supply 30 kg N ha-1 and the balance amount of N, P and K was supplied through chemical fertilizer. Amendment materials as per fertilization treatments were incorporated to individual plots 15 days before planting of rice during the rainy season. The residual effects were studied on the following peanut crop with application of N:P:K at 30:26.2:33.3 kg ha-1 through chemical fertilizer alone in all treatments, apart from the control. An application of fly ash at 10 t ha-1 in combination with chemical fertilizer and organic materials increased the grain yield of rice by 11% compared to chemical fertilizer alone. The residual effect of both lime and fly ash applications combined with direct application of chemical fertilizer increased peanut yields by 30% and 24%, respectively, compared to chemical fertilizer alone. Treatments with fly ash or lime increased P and K uptake in both the crops and oil content in peanut kernel compared to those without the amendments. Alkaline coal fly ash proved to be a better amendment than lime for improving productivity of an acid lateritic soil and enriching the soil with P and K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phosphorus is a critical nutrient for plant growth. Several agronomic practices have been promoted to improve soil fertility and crop productivity in Western Kenya. Yet, despite their benefits, a dearth of knowledge exists on their long-term effects on soil microbial biomass and phosphorus solubilizing microbial species (PSMs) abundance especially in this region. In a long-term (15 years) agronomic field trial, we selected 8 treatments that allowed for evaluation of 1) Effect of tillage in a maize-soybean rotation with fertilization and residue retention; 2) Effect of residue retention in a maize-soybean rotation with fertilization under conservation tillage; 3) Effect of N and P fertilization in a maize-soybean rotation with conventional tillage; 4) Effect of liming in a maize-soybean intercropping with conventional tillage; and 5) Effect of maize-soybean rotation versus intercropping under conservation tillage on microbial biomass and PSMs abundance. The study was conducted in a long-term conservation agriculture experiment (30 seasons) in a Ferralsol in Western Kenya in 2016 and 2017. Reduced tillage significantly (P < 0.05) increased microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) and abundance of different PSMs relative to conventional tillage, though the results were not consistent for some species. Residue addition significantly increased MBP and abundance of different PSMs compared to systems without residue addition. Liming significantly reduced PSMs abundance in 2016, though this was inconsistent for 2017. In 2017, no effect of liming on soil pH was found. Fertiliser addition significantly increased PSMs abundance in 2016, but this was also inconsistent for 2017. Some PSMs strains were significantly more abundant in maize and soybean intercropping system compared to rotation, and vice versa. Our study demonstrated that not only the agronomic inputs applied but also tillage and cropping systems employed can variably affect the soil microbial populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
