High internal phase Pickering emulsions (HIPEs) constitute a significant research domain within colloid interface chemistry, addressing the demand for robust emulsion systems across various applications. An innovative nanoparticle, synthesized from a cyclodextrin metal-organic framework encapsulated with a composite of resveratrol and soy isolate protein (RCS), was employed to fortify a high internal phase emulsion. The emulsion's three-dimensional printing capabilities, alongside the encapsulated delivery efficacy for β-carotene, were thoroughly examined. Cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs), facilitated by cellulose nanofibrils, were synthesized to yield particles at the nanoscale, maintaining a remarkable 97.67 % cellular viability at an elevated concentration of 1000 μg/ml. The RCS nanoparticles demonstrated thermal stability and antioxidant capacities surpassing those of CD-MOF. The integration of soybean isolate protein augmented both the hydrophobicity (from 21.95 ± 0.64° to 59.15 ± 0.78°) and the interfacial tension (from 14.36 ± 0.46 mN/m to 5.34 ± 0.81 mN/m) of the CD-MOF encapsulated with resveratrol, thereby enhancing the RCS nanoparticles' adsorption at the oil-water interface with greater stability. The durability of the RCS-stabilized high internal phase emulsions was contingent upon the RCS concentration. Emulsions stabilized with 5 wt%-RCS exhibited optimal physical and chemical robustness, demonstrating superior performance in emulsion 3D printing and β-carotene encapsulation delivery. The solubility of cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) in aqueous media making it not suitable as sustained-release drug carrier. Here, curcumin-loaded CD-MOFs (CD-MOFs-Cur) was embedded in chitosan-graft-poly(lactic acid) (CS-LA) via a solid-in-oil-in-oil (s/o/o) emulsifying solvent evaporation method forming the sustained-release composite microspheres. At CS-LA concentration of 20 mg/mL, the composite microspheres showed good sphericity. The average particle size of CS-LA/CD-MOFs-Cur (2:1), CS-LA/CD-MOFs-Cur (4:1) and CS-LA/CD-MOFs-Cur (6:1) composite microspheres was about 9.3, 12.3 and 13.5 μm, respectively. The above composite microspheres exhibited various degradation rates and curcumin release rates. Treating in HCl solution (pH 1.2) for 120 min, the average particle size of above microspheres reduced 28.19 %, 24.34 % and 6.19 %, and curcumin released 86.23 %, 78.37 % and 52.57 %, respectively. Treating in PBS (pH 7.4) for 12 h, the average particle size of above microspheres reduced 30.56 %, 26.56 % and 10.66 %, and curcumin released 68.54 %, 54.32 % and 31.25 %, respectively. Moreover, the composite microspheres had a favorable cytocompatibility, with cell viability of higher than 90 %. The engineering of a new type of trifunctional biopolymer-based nanosponges polymerized by cross-linking beta-cyclodextrin ethylene diamine (βCD-EDA) with bifunctional hairy nanocellulose (BHNC) is reported herein. We refer to the highly cross-linked polymerized BHNC-βCD-EDA network as BBE. βCD-EDA and BHNC were cross-linked at various ratios with the help of DMTMM (4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium) as a green activator in deionized water as a solvent, which resulted in different morphological shapes of BBE. Some of these structures were chiral due to cross-linked liquid crystalline structures. A comprehensive characterization study was done to show their unique morphological, structural, and dimensional properties of BBEs. Moreover, to further investigate and to confirm the surface modification of the precursors and final BBE structures, Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, and X-ray diffraction were applied. The hairy nanocellulose particles were considered as the backbone, and the immobilized cyclodextrin cavities can capture doxorubicin, which was used as a model drug molecule via host-guest inclusion complexation. Finally, the obtained BBE networks showed different and sustained drug release profiles and pH responsiveness. BBE biopolymers were tested as biocompatible nanocarriers for controlled release. We realize that these structures are too big for anti-cancer drug delivery by injection or oral intake, but these structures have a high potential to be applied in wound dressing and implants. They could also be used for capturing antibiotics, dyes, and organic compounds from wastewater.

This study intended to design novel nanofibrillated cellulose/cyclodextrin-based 3D scaffolds loaded with raloxifene hydrochloride for bone regeneration. The scaffolds were prepared using two different types of cyclodextrins namely; beta-cyclodextrin and methyl-beta-cyclodextrin. The prepared scaffolds were evaluated by characterizing their porosity, compressive strength, in-vitro drug release, FT-IR and XRD as well as their morphological properties using SEM. Results presented that the prepared scaffolds were highly porous, additionally, the scaffold containing drug/beta-cyclodextrin kneaded complex (SC5) showed the most controlled drug release pattern with the least burst effect and reached almost complete release at 480 h. The in-vitro cytocompatibility and regenerative effect of the chosen scaffold (SC5) was assessed using Saos-2 cell line. Results proved that SC5 was biocompatible. Moreover, it enhanced the cell adhesion, alkaline phosphatase enzyme expression and calcium ion deposition which are essential factors for bone mineralization. When grafted β-cyclodextrin is used as targeting sites, Pluronic polymers have been introduced on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals by means of inclusion interaction between β-cyclodextrin and hydrophobic segment of the polymer. Because of the steric stabilization effect, surface poly(ethylene glycol) chains facilitate the dispersion and compatibility of nanocrystals, which also enhance the loading levels of nanocrystals in the hydrogel system. Meanwhile, uncovered poly(ethylene glycol) segments render the participating inclusion of α-cyclodextrin for the architecture of in situ hydrogels. Surface grafting and inclusion reactions were proved by solid (13)C NMR and FTIR. Grafting efficiency of β-cyclodextrin and inclusion efficiency of Pluronic on the surface of nanocrystals were confirmed by UV spectroscopy and elemental analysis. A significant enhancement of the structural and thermal stability of in situ hydrogels with high loading levels of modified nanocrystals (>5.77 wt %) was observed by rheological analysis. Further study reveals the performance and behavior of hydrogels under a different pH environment. Finally, in situ hydrogels were used as drug carrier for in vitro release of doxorubicin and exhibit the behavior of prolonged drug release with special release kinetics.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) increase the cake solids and drainage rate of belt-pressed biological or primary sludge when added to the sludge slurry along with conventional conditioning chemicals. These benefits are obtained at very low CD dosage. A 2.8 percentage point increase in cake solids was obtained in a full-scale trial with mixed primary and biological sludge from a paper mill. CDs also decrease the specific resistance to filtration and increase the capture rate of solids during belt pressing. Mechanistic studies showed that CDs increase the surface tension of c-PAM polymers in water and reduce the turbidity, indicating that they are able to aggregate the charged polymers, and, by inference, sludge particles treated with the polymer. A mechanism is proposed where CDs reduce excessively charged regions of the polymer-treated surface of the sludge, thereby facilitating its flocculation.
