Due to their higher energy efficiency and better economic performance, distributed energy resource (DER) systems are expected to be one of the main energy supply forms in the future and have gained increasing attention in recent years. Thus, there is a need to boost our understanding of how to apply DER systems in different types of actual cases. This paper investigates a techno-economic analysis of a DER system applied in a real case in a hot-summer and cold-winter zone in China, where the climate is considered to be Cfa according to the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system. An urban underground transportation infrastructure system located in Changsha (China) was chosen to analyze the techno-economic performance of a natural-gas-fired DER system in comparison with a centralized energy system (CES). First, a scientific and reasonable application program of the natural-gas-fired DER system was developed by an overall load analysis (electric load, air-conditioner load, and domestic hot water load during the operating period). Based on this load analysis, this research combined the energy consumption and the actual operating situation and then compared and analyzed different types and capacities of equipment in this case. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis of the economic benefits was estimated by comparing the natural-gas-fired DER system with conventional CESs. Overall, the total annual cost of the DER system was reduced by 18.73%, and its additional investment can be paid back within about 2.2 years. Urban building energy modeling (UBEM) has attracted wide attention to the requirement for global carbon emission reduction. This paper presents a UBEM tool, AutoBPS-Param, to generate building energy models (BEMs) with parameterized geometry and detailed thermal zones, especially for complex building types, considering the shading effect from surrounding buildings simultaneously. Three building number scales and four scenarios were analyzed in the hotel-related buildings in Changsha, China. For the prototype modeling of Scenario 1, eighteen prototype building energy models for six building types in three vintages were created, and their simulation results were aggregated based on their representative floor areas. For AutoBPS-Param of Scenario 4, the method created one EnergyPlus (Version: 9.3.0) model for each building. The geometry of the prototype model was scaled and modified based on the target building's length, width, and number of stories. The surrounding buildings were also added to the AutoBPS-Param simulation to better capture the urban dynamic impact. The results showed that the annual electricity and natural gas energy use intensity (EUI) of the pre-2005 HotelOffice prototype model was 172.25 and 140.45 kWh/m2. In contrast, with the AutoBPS-Param method, the annual electricity EUIs of 71 HotelOffice buildings constructed before 2005 ranged from 159.51 to 213.58 kWh/m2 with an average of 173.14 kWh/m2, and the annual gas EUIs ranged from 68.02 to 229.12 kWh/m2 with an average of 108.89 kWh/m2. Building performance simulation can be used for retrofit analysis. However, it is time-consuming to create building energy models for existing buildings. This paper presented and implemented a rapid building energy modeling method for existing buildings by using prototype models and automatic model calibration for retrofit analysis with uncertainty. A shopping mall building located in Changsha, China, was selected as a case study to demonstrate the rapid modeling method. First, a toolkit named AutoBPS-Param was developed to generate building energy models with parameterized geometry data. A baseline EnergyPlus model was generated based on the building's basic information, including vintage, climate zone, total floor area, and percentage of each function type. Next, Monte Carlo sampling was applied to generate 1000 combinations for fourteen parameters. One thousand EnergyPlus models were created by modifying the baseline model with each parameter combination. Moreover, the 1000 simulation results were compared with the measured monthly electricity and natural gas usage data to find 29 calibrated solutions. Finally, the 29 calibrated energy models were used to evaluate the energy-saving potential of three energy conservation measures with uncertainty. The retrofit analysis results indicated that the electrical energy saving percentage of chiller replacement ranged from 1.57% to 13.51%, with an average of 8.27%. The energy-saving rate of lighting system replacement ranged from 1.92% to 11.66%, with an average of 6.43%. The energy-saving rate of window replacement ranges from 0.31% to 1.81%, with an average of 0.55%. Occupant behavior has an important impact on building energy consumption, and the accuracy of an occupant behavior model directly affects the reliability of energy consumption simulation results. Ultra-low energy buildings are crucial to achieving building energy conservation and carbon dioxide reduction in China. In order to effectively promote the development of ultra-low energy buildings in Hot Summer and Cold Winter Climate Zones. where most residents adopt a "part-time, part-space" pattern of intermittent energy use behavior, and to solve the problem of poor indoor thermal environments and the high incremental cost of ultra-low energy, the study described in this paper takes Changsha as an example to carry out a multi-objective optimization study on ultra-low energy housing using a probabilistic behavioral model. On the basis of a probability model representing the residents' actual behavior in Changsha, the optimization objective indicators, key variables and the technology benchmarks for ultra-low energy building were determined, then multi-objective optimization was carried out for a range of energy efficient technologies to obtain the Pareto optimal solutions. The results showed that the set of optimal solutions could reduce energy demand by 50.2 to 60.2% and reduce indoor thermal discomfort time by 3.52–11.09% compared with those of a reference base case, which just meets the requirements of the current design standard for energy efficient domestic buildings. An optimum solution for energy savings and indoor thermal comfort, along with economic costs, was identified, which can assist in decision-making by providing different preferences and provide useful reference for the design of ultra-low energy buildings in Hot Summer and Cold Winter Climate regions. With their focus on human production and consumption activities, cities incur massive energy consumption and CO2 emissions. An intercity connection is a typical complex system in which the interaction between cities is crucial for developing low-carbon outputs within the urban agglomeration. This paper presents the construction of the CO2 emission network of an urban agglomeration in the Yangtze River middle reaches megalopolis, based on the gravity model. Combined with social network analysis (SNA), a multilevel analysis framework is proposed to deal with the complexity, spatiality, and visualization of the CO2 emission network with reference to the network features, structural equivalence, and the rich-club phenomenon. The following results emerged: firstly, the spatial structure of the CO2 emissions was characterized by low robustness and compactness, indicating disunity among the studied cities. Secondly, there was found to be a strong correlation between regionalism and intercity connections, with geographically close cities playing a similar role in the network. Thirdly, the "rich-club" cities, including Wuhan, Changsha, Xiaogan, and Zhuzhou, dominated the connections, covering more than 87.1% of the network in the Yangtze River Middle Reaches Megalopolis. Reducing building energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy are essential to energy conservation. Photovoltaic thermoelectric heat pumps have been considered as a sustainable measure to supply detached houses with hot water, especially those that even do not have access to the power grid. This paper investigates a stand-alone photovoltaic/thermal integrated thermoelectric water heating system (PV/T-TEWH). A dynamic model of PV/T-TEWH is developed and validated. The performance of the system in Lhasa, Beijing, Changsha and Guangzhou is simulated and analyzed respectively, and the economics of the system are compared. Results show that PV/T-TEWH can rely on the electric energy it generates without additional power supply when the current is less than or equal to 1.4 A in Lhasa and 1.0 A in Beijing, Changsha and Guangzhou. The annual total heat gain of the PV/T-TEWH system increases as the operating current increases, but the COP of the system falls with the rise of operating current. When the system is operating at the currents of 0.6 A, 1.0 A, 1.4 A, and 1.8 A, the payback period shortens with the increase of current. Lhasa has the shortest payback period among four cities and it is only 2.2 years when the working current is 1.8 A. Further research is needed on the capability of residential communities to achieve energy self-sufficiency under the constraints of current standards of land use, in particular for the Hot Summer and Cold Winter climate zone (HSCW) of China, where the majority of communities are dominated by high floor-area ratios, thus high-rise dwellings, namely less solar potential per unit floor area, while most residents adopt a "part-time, part-space" pattern of intermittent energy use behavior, thus using relatively low energy per unit floor area. This study examines 150 communities in Changsha to identify morphological indicators and develop a prototype model utilizing the Grasshopper platform. Community morphology is simulated and optimized by taking building location, orientation, and number of floors as independent variables and building energy consumption, solar PV generation, and energy self-sufficiency rate as dependent variables. The results reveal that the morphology optimization can achieve a 4.26% decrease in building energy consumption, a 45% increase in PV generation, and a 13.2% enhancement in energy self-sufficiency, with the optimal being 39%. It highlights that energy self-sufficiency cannot be achieved solely through morphology improvements. Moreover, the study underscores the crucial role of community orientation in maximizing energy self-sufficiency, with the south–north orientation identified as the most beneficial. Additionally, a layout characterized by a horizontally closed and staggered pattern and a vertically scattered arrangement emerges as favorable for enhancing energy self-sufficiency. These findings underscore the importance of considering morphological factors, particularly community orientation, in striving towards energy-self-sufficient high-rise residential communities within the HSCW climate zone of China. Solar spectral irradiance distributions have a great impact on the photoelectric conversion performance of photovoltaic materials. By average photon energy, this paper assessed the practical conversion performance of ten types of photovoltaic materials based on the spectral measurements of Beijing and Changsha, China. Photon energy utilization efficiency was proposed to assess the practical conversion performance of photovoltaic materials at the same aperture area. Monocrystalline silicon had the best energy utilization efficiency when the spectrum is the red-rich or close to the reference spectrum. However, gallium arsenide would outperform it if the average photon energy exceeded 1.95 eV. Mismatch factor was used at the same rated output power of photovoltaic materials. It is found that the mismatch factor of perovskite with a 1.22 eV bandgap energy ranks the first place when the spectrum is the red-rich or close to the reference spectrum. However, the perovskite with a 1.83 eV bandgap energy has the optimal conversion performance at the average photon energy over 1.83 eV. Moreover, an ideal photovoltaic material with advanced properties was proposed for optimal performance with the regional spectra, which might provide useful instruction for photovoltaic industries to produce the most suitable photovoltaic material considering the annual regional spectrum. • A solar assisted ground source heat pump system with graded thermal energy storage (SAGSHP-GTES) was proposed. • Performance for two SAGSHP systems were simulated and compared in depth. • The SAGSHP system showed a poor η SC of around 19.4%, while the SAGSHP-GTES system showed excellent performance, with a high η SC of around 42.7%, and the problem of soil temperature reduction was solved. • The SAGSHP-GTES system was a feasible and efficient technology for hot water supply in all climate zones of China. The solar assisted ground source heat pump system (SAGSHP) is recognized as an efficient, clean and economical renewable energy technology for hot water supply. However, in SAGSHP systems with an all-day hot water supply, the solar collectors can only heat the water tank with intense solar radiation, which wastes moderate and weak solar resources. In addition, as the SAGSHP system draws heat from the soil for a long time, the soil temperature around the borehole decreases, causing the performance of the GSHP to deteriorate. To solve the above problems, a SAGSHP system with graded thermal energy storage (SAGSHP-GTES) was proposed. This paper investigated the performance and feasibility of the SAGSHP-GTES system, using a case study of hot water supply in a campus dormitory in Changsha, China. Firstly, the drawbacks of solar energy utilization in the conventional SAGSHP system were analyzed. Then, the SAGSHP-GTES system was modeled by TRNSYS, and its operational performance was evaluated and compared with the conventional SAGSHP system. Finally, the feasibility and performance of the SAGSHP-GTES system in different climate zones of China were analyzed. The results showed that the conventional SAGSHP system had a poor solar energy utilization efficiency, with an average thermal efficiency of the SC (η SC) of only around 19.4%. The long period of operation caused the soil temperature to drop from 18.1 °C to 2.78 °C, which led to a decrease in system efficiency and an increase in electricity consumption. By controlling the heat collection of the SC and the graded utilization of solar energy in the SAGSHP-GTES system, a high η SC of around 42.7% was obtained, which improved the system efficiency while eliminating the problem of soil temperature drop. After 15 years of operation, the soil temperature increased from 18.1 °C to 19.9 °C, which led to an increase in the coefficient of performance of the system (COP sys) from 3.77 kW/kW to 3.84 kW/kW and COP GSHP from 3.45 kW/kW to 3.5 kW/kW, and a reduction in electricity consumption from 51,746 kWh to 50,735 kWh. In addition, the conventional SAGSHP system was not feasible in severe cold zones (Harbin) and cold zones (Beijing) of China, where soil temperatures fell below 0 °C and freezing of the circulating fluid occurred, while the SAGSHP-GTES system showed excellent performance in all climatic zones of China and is a feasible and efficient technology for hot water supply. China has promised to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral before 2060. Achieving this target requires actions from all sectors, especially the building sector, which accounts for 33 % of the total energy consumption in China. Within this scenario, this paper introduces a new urban building energy modeling tool, Automated Building Performance Simulation (AutoBPS), to calculate urban building energy demands and to analyze energy retrofit and rooftop photovoltaic (PV) potential. AutoBPS uses a building-by-building approach to automatically generate multi-zone (one zone per floor) models based on the city building dataset, considering the shading effect by surrounding buildings. The tool simulates building energy use and PV generation via EnergyPlus. A downtown district of 3633 buildings in Changsha, China, was selected as a case study to demonstrate the features of the tool. Firstly, annual baseline energy uses of 1793 GWh were simulated by inputting Geographic Information System (GIS) data. Then, different energy conservation measures (covering envelope, lighting, cooling system upgrade, etc.) and roof PV generation systems were adopted to explore energy saving potential. The results showed that the window upgrade was the most energy-efficient individual measure for residential buildings, while the lighting upgrade was that one for commercial buildings. Altogether three measures could save 2.7 ∼ 30.7 % of annual site energy use intensity per building. The total energy demand could be reduced by 18.5 % by combining all measures and saved by 38.6 % when PV installation was added. Saving energy consumption of air-conditioning is essential to building energy conservation while satisfying the thermal comfort requirements of indoor environment. On the basis of human clothing adjustment behavior, a dynamic setting temperature (DST) that adapts to climate change was proposed in this paper, i.e. indoor air-conditioning setting temperature changes dynamically with outdoor air temperature; furthermore. A method was established to obtain the DST. The daily mean clothing insulation was predicted according to the historical temperature at first, then indoor thermal comfort temperature was calculated based on the variable clothing insulation, and finally the DST was determined. According to the value or range of predicted mean vote (0, -0.5~0.5, -1~+1) corresponding to the thermal comfort, three levels of DST were defined. The corresponding thermal acceptability rates were 95%, 90% and 73%, respectively. A simulation of DST was conducted in a public building in Changsha, China based on meteorological data of 2017. Three levels of DST ranges were obtained, varied from 20.1 to 27.8 °C in level I, 17.8 to 28.7 °C in level II and 15.4 to 29.7 °C in level III, respectively. The simulation results of operational air-conditioning energy consumption shows that the application of DST could save up to 65.5% of energy consumption compared with the traditional fixed setting temperature (FST), and the operational energy consumption decreased by 59.1% due to the application of level-III DST compared with level-I DST. Glass facades are widely used by architects due to their good aesthetics, super visual comfort, and good acoustics, but this structure may result in huge energy consumption. In this paper, a novel window with transparent insulation slats (WTIS) using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was studied. An optical and thermal model of WTIS was established and the validity of the model was verified by using experimental data. The instantaneous heat flux, dynamic solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) and dynamic overall heat transfer coefficient (k-value) were used to evaluate the comprehensive thermal performance of WTIS in comparison to that of normal double glazing (NDG). Besides, the effects of slat spacing and the transmittance of slat on the thermal performance of WTIS were analyzed. The results show that during the cooling season, the peak instantaneous heat flux entering the room through WTIS decreases by 32.7% compared with that through NDG. The average SHGC and average k-value of WTIS are about 20.6% and 17.37% lower than those of NDG, respectively. The total heat gain of WTIS is 35.03% lower than that of NDG in Beijing, while the figure for Changsha is 20.91%. The slat spacing and the transmittance of slat have a positive correlation with SHGC and k-value. A new variant of the two-echelon routing problem is investigated, where the truck and the drone are used to cooperatively complete the deliveries of all parcels. The truck not only acts as a tool for parcel delivery but also serves as a moving depot for the drone. The drone can carry several parcels and take off from the truck, while returning to the truck after completing the delivery. The energy consumption model for the routing process of the drone is analyzed, when it is utilized to deliver multiple parcels. A two-stage route-based modeling approach is proposed to optimize both the truck’s main route and the drone’s adjoint flying routes. A hybrid heuristic integrating nearest neighbor and cost saving strategies is developed to quickly construct a feasible solution. The simulated annealing algorithm is integrated with Tabu search, to improve the quality of the solution as well as the search efficiency. Random instances at different scales are used to test the performance of the proposed algorithm. The construction industry is among the pillars of China’s economic development. However, it causes high carbon emission and high energy consumption, which should be considered when drafting energy saving and emission reduction policies. The sustainable development of this industry lies in the effective estimation of carbon emission efficiency and implementation of energy-saving and emission reduction measures in accordance with local practical situations. First, investigations on the emission efficiency of the construction industry and relevant emission reduction policies in foreign developed countries were reviewed in this study. Second, the carbon emission efficiency of the construction industry in 13 prefecture-level cities in Hunan Province (China) from 2011 to 2017 were estimated using the SBM (Slack Based Measure) model involving unexpected outputs. Finally, specific suggestions on reducing the carbon emission of the construction industry were proposed. CO2 emissions in the construction industry increase annually as a response to economic development and urbanization. The carbon emission efficiency of Hunan Province’s construction industry maintained a stable growth rate in 2011-2017. The industry achieved an annual growth rate of 2.7% in 2017 from that in 2011. The carbon emission efficiency of Changsha City, Zhangjiajie City, and Yiyang City were relatively higher than those of other cities in the province. Such findings serve as a reference to the quantification of potential of Hunan Province in reducing the carbon emission, the formulation of specific carbon emission reduction goal, the augmentation of the means to evaluate energy saving and emission reduction, and the development of a low-carbon construction industry. The distributed energy system (DES) has increasingly attracted considerable attention from researchers due to its environmental friendliness and high efficiency. In the hot summer and cold winter areas, DES is an efficient alternative for district cooling and heating. A case study located in Changsha, China, which is a typical hot summer and cold winter area, is analyzed. Four control strategies are proposed in this study. The four cases under different control strategies are compared in terms of energy, economy, environment, solar fraction, and soil annual heat imbalance rate. Results show that the DES can be an energy saving and environmentally friendly alternative. The primary energy saving (PES) is more than 36.70% and can reach up to 48.04%, whereas DES can realize economical operation and reduce the emission of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and dust. In addition, DES consumes more electricity and less natural gas than the conventional energy system. These features are beneficial to the optimization of China's energy consumption structure. Moreover, the operation of seasonal thermal storage for the ground soil is effective in maintaining the balance of soil annual heat. The control strategy combining geothermal and solar energies is recommended due to its good performance and high flexibility.
