Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to predict a suitable paper substrate which has high capillary pressure with the tendency of subsequent fluid wrenching in onward direction for the fabrication of microfluidics device application. Design/methodology/approach: The experiment has been done on the WhatmanTM grade 1, WhatmanTM chromatography and nitrocellulose paper samples which are made by GE Healthcare Life Sciences. The structural characterization of paper samples for surface properties has been done by scanning electron microscope and ImageJ software. Identification of functional groups on the surface of samples has been done by Fourier transform infrared analysis. A finite elemental analysis has also been performed by using the "Multiphase Flow in Porous Media" module of the COMSOL Multiphysics tool which combines Darcy's law and Phase Transport in Porous Media interface. Findings: Experimentally, it has been concluded that the paper substrate for flexible microfluidic device application must have large number of internal (intra- and interfiber) pores with fewer void spaces (external pores) that have high capillary pressure to propel the fluid in onward direction with narrow paper fiber channel. Originality/value: Surface structure has a dynamic impact in paper substrate utilization in multiple applications such as paper manufacturing, printing process and microfluidics applications. Recently, Landon and Schaus [1] published a very interesting article providing an algorithm that allows the selection of a representative subset taken form a molecular library. The aim of this note is to argue that some aspects discussed in the article remain unclear despite it having passed a review process. That is because the manuscript check was not complete and, possibly, it was published prematurely. There are several concepts that are not well defined or explained in the text. This note will attempt to focus on some of those points, transmitting them to the reader with the hope that a door is being opened to a more complete discussion and understanding of the article. At the same time, this is a good opportunity to recall the relevance of this new and promising method.

In this study, continuous carbon reinforced C f /(Ti 0.2 Zr 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 Ta 0.2)C–SiC high entropy ceramic matrix composites were additively manufactured through paper laminating (PL), direct slurry writing (DSW), and precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP). (Ti 0.2 Zr 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 Ta 0.2)C high entropy ceramic (HEC) powders were synthesized by pressureless sintering and ball milling. A certain proportion of HEC powder, SiC powder, water, binder, and dispersant were mixed to prepare the HEC-SiC slurry. Meanwhile, BN coating was prepared on the 2D fiber cloth surface by the boric acid-urea method and then the cloth was cut into required shape. Additive manufacturing were conducted subsequently. Firstly, one piece of the as-treated carbon fiber cloth was auto-placed on the workbench by paper laminating (PL). Then, the HEC-SiC slurry was extruded onto the surface of the cloth by direct slurry writing (DSW). PL and DSW process were repeated, and a C f /HEC-SiC preform was obtained after 3 cycles. At last, the preform was densified by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) and the final C f /HEC-SiC composite was prepared. The open porosity of the C f /HEC-SiC composites, with the HEC volume fractions of 15, 30 and 45%, were 7.7, 10.6, and 11.3%, respectively. And the density of the C f /HEC-SiC composites, with the HEC volume fractions of 15, 30 and 45%, were 2.9, 2.7 and 2.3 g/cm3, respectively. The mechanical properties of the C f /HEC-SiC composites increased firstly and then decreased with the HEC content increase, reaching the maximum value when the HEC volume fraction was 30%. The mechanical properties of the C f /HEC-SiC composites containing 45, 30 and 15% HEC were as follows: flexural strength (180.4 ± 14 MPa, 183.7 ± 4 MPa, and 173.9 ± 4 MPa), fracture toughness (11.9 ± 0.17 MPa m1/2, 14.6 ± 2.89 MPa m1/2, and 11.3 ± 1.88 MPa m1/2), and tensile strength (71.5 ± 4.9 MPa, 98.4 ± 12.2 MPa, and 73.4 ± 8.5 MPa). From this study, the additive manufacturing of continuous carbon fiber reinforced high entropy ceramic matrix composites was achieved, opening a new insight into the manufacturing of ceramic matrix composites. Abstract: The aim of this study is to modify the surface of a commercial paper, using the cold plasma treatment in order to increase its hydrophilic character, thus minimizing the disintegration time and/or the energy consumption, needed to recycle cellulose fibers and obtain a homogeneous suspension. Plasma treatment was applied for different exposure times, under optimal experimental conditions of ground pressure and power. The treated paper samples were characterized by contact angle measurements. The plasma treated samples were disintegrated using a series of different number of rotations (rpm) and the resulting fiber suspensions were used to prepare laboratory hand sheets using a conventional sheet forming. Before paper making, the morphological characteristics of the fibers were evaluated by a MorFi analyser. The effect of plasma treatment on the quality of recycling was evaluated measuring the first-order entropy of the sheet formation. These results show that for similar entropy values, disintegration time for the reference samples is longer than for the treated samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the surface of the treated samples underwent strong oxidation, which is probably responsible for easy recycling of the paper samples. Abstract: Paper drying is an exergy costly operation, so also a few percent saving may be of importance. The entropy production for the paper drying process was therefore optimised for a conventional multi-cylinder drying machine, the PM2 newsprint machine at Norske Skog ASA in Skogn, Norway. The machine has 51 cylinders grouped in three drying groups; the cylinders are either heated from the inside by steam, unheated or operated under vacuum conditions. The same inlet drying air is supplied in all upper air-pockets of the machine. Our drying model for the paper temperature profile was first compared with measured data from the machine. The total entropy production of the drying process was next calculated, and then minimised subject to a fixed outlet paper moisture content. Inlet humidity and cylinder group conditions were varied. Optimum conditions were obtained for a range of inlet air humidities, and for different cylinder groupings. We found that it was very favourable to increase the inlet air humidity. Other changes had a negligible effect on the total entropy production. The results further pointed to the need for a revision of the current paper drying model, as the second-law of thermodynamics was violated at high air humidities with this model. In this study, we compared visual fatigue parameters caused by watching 2D and 3D display presented on Sony BRAVIA LCD 3DTV based on electroencephalography (EEG) signal. EEG features (δ, θ, α, β, α/β, θ/β, (α+θ)/β, (α+θ)/(α+β), gravity frequency of power spectrum (GF) and power spectral entropy (PSE)) of 19 electrodes divided into 9 regions were extracted by frequency‐domain analysis method. The 9 horizontal and vertica brain areas had a significant influence on δ power and θ Power The results indicated that 3D display caused more visual fatigue compared to 2D display. During the last two decades, a systematic re-examination of the whole information science field has taken place around the FIS—Foundations of Information Science—initiative. With the occasion of its Fourth Conference in Beijing 2010, a group of selected contributors and leading practitioners of those fields have been invited to contribute to this Special Issue. What is the status of information science today? What is the relationship between information and the laws of nature? Is information merely “physical”? What is the difference between information and computation? Has the genomic revolution changed the contemporary views on information and life? And what about the nature of social information? Cogent answers to these questions and to quite many others are attempted in the contributions that follow.

The accompanying papers in the first issue of Entropy, volume 5, 2003 were presented at the electronic conference on Foundations of Information Science FIS 2002 (http://www.mdpi.net/fis2002/). The running title of this FIS e-conference was THE NATURE OF INFORMATION: CONCEPTIONS, MISCONCEPTIONS, AND PARADOXES. It was held on the Internet from 6 to 10 May 2002, and was followed by a series of discussions –structured as focused sessions– which took place in the net from 10 May 2002 until 31 January 2003 (more than 400 messages were exchanged, see: http://fis.iguw.tuwien.ac.at/mailings/). This Introduction will briefly survey the problems around the concept of information, will present the central ideas of the FIS initiative, and will contrast some of the basic differences between information and mechanics (reductionism).

In this study, the quality of groundwater was assessed in a semi-arid region of India by using an entropy weighted water quality index (EWQI) and a pollution index of groundwater (PIG). The EWQI and PIG methods were used to evaluate data on physicochemical parameters in relation to drinking water quality standards. Groundwater samples were collected from the Dubbak region, Telangana state, India, and were analyzed for pH, total hardness, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, bicarbonate (HCO 3 - ), chloride (Cl - ), sulfate (SO 4 2- ), nitrate (NO 3 - ), fluoride (F - ), calcium (Ca 2+ ), magnesium (Mg 2+ ), sodium (Na + ), and potassium (K + ). The groundwater of the study region is alkaline in nature. The abundance of cations and anions based on their mean values is in the following order: Na +  > Ca 2+  > Mg 2+  > K + and Cl -  > HCO 3 -  > NO 3 -  > SO 4 2-  > F - , respectively. The calculated EWQI values ranged from 49.0 to 174.6, with an average of 93.3. Overall, EWQI data showed that only 60% of groundwater samples were of suitable quality for drinking, although only marginally, whereas the remaining 40% of samples were unsuitable for drinking purposes and would therefore require treatment. The values of PIG varied from 0.5 to 1.8, with an average of 1.0, which showed that only 63% of groundwater samples from the study area were suitable for drinking purposes.

The need to complete multiple tasks concurrently is a common occurrence both daily life and in occupational activities, which can often include simultaneous cognitive and physical demands. As one example, there is increasing availability of head-worn display technologies that can be employed when a user is mobile (e.g., while walking). This new method of information presentation may, however, introduce risks of adverse outcomes such as a decrement to gait performance. The goal of this study was thus to quantify the effects of a head-worn display (i.e., smart glasses) on motor variability during gait and to compare these effects with those of other common information displays (i.e., smartphone and paper-based system). Twenty participants completed four walking conditions, as a single task and in three dual-task conditions (three information displays). In the dual-task conditions, the information display was used to present several cognitive tasks. Three different measures were used to quantify variability in gait parameters for each walking condition (using the cycle-to-cycle standard deviation, sample entropy, and the “goal-equivalent manifold” approach). Our results indicated that participants used less adaptable gait strategies in dual-task walking using the paper-based system and smartphone conditions compared with single-task walking. Gait performance, however, was less affected during dual-task walking with the smart glasses. We conclude that the risk of an adverse gait event (e.g., a fall) in head-down walking conditions (i.e., the paper-based system and smartphone conditions) were higher than in single-task walking, and that head-worn displays might help reduce the risk of such events during dual-task gait conditions. Selection of a suitable fibrous raw material for the pulp and papermaking industries is a tedious process involving a lot of experimental procedures. This process can be reduced to some extent through computer-based simulation tools and treating the problem as a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. In the present study, selection of fibrous raw material is treated as an MCDM problem where chemical, morphological and physical properties of the fibers are considered as different criteria and study is done in context of Indian Pulp and Paper Mills. TOPSIS, its fuzzy variant (FTOPSIS) and its modified variant (MTOPSIS) are employed to identify the suitable selection of fibers. The results obtained by these methods when discussed with experts indicate that MCDM tools like TOPSIS (and its variants) can be an attractive alternative for simulation-based selection of fibrous raw material for pulp and paper industries. Because of the unique imaging mechanism of infrared (IR) sensors, IR images commonly suffer from blurred edge details, low contrast, and poor signal-to-noise ratio. A new method is proposed in this paper to enhance IR image details so that the enhanced images can effectively inhibit image noise and improve image contrast while enhancing image details. First, for the traditional guided image filter (GIF) applied to IR image enhancement is prone to halo artifacts, this paper proposes a detail enhancement guided filter (DGIF). It mainly adds the constructed edge perception and detail regulation factors to the cost function of the GIF. Then, according to the visual characteristics of human eyes, this paper applies the detail regulation factor to the detail layer enhancement, which solves the problem of amplifying image noise using fixed gain coefficient enhancement. Finally, the enhanced detail layer is directly fused with the base layer so that the enhanced image has rich detail information. We first compare the DGIF with four guided image filters and then compare the algorithm of this paper with three traditional IR image enhancement algorithms and two IR image enhancement algorithms based on the GIF on 20 IR images. The experimental results show that the DGIF has better edge-preserving and smoothing characteristics than the four guided image filters. The mean values of quantitative evaluation of information entropy, average gradient, edge intensity, figure definition, and root-mean-square contrast of the enhanced images, respectively, achieved about 0.23%, 3.4%, 4.3%, 2.1%, and 0.17% improvement over the optimal parameter. It shows that the algorithm in this paper can effectively suppress the image noise in the detail layer while enhancing the detail information, improving the image contrast, and having a better visual effect.
