China has become the world largest paper and paperboard producer. However, pulp and paper industry has involved high resource consumption and severe pollution especially for water. This research has assessed the eco-efficiency of China's pulp and paper industry at the national level and provincial level. An overview regarding the cleaner production of China's pulp and paper industry was presented to reveal the measures for reducing environmental impact in the last two decades. Slacks-based measure was used to analyze the efficiency levels of 16 provinces' pulp and paper industries. To uncover the underlying causes of eco-efficiency performance, Malmquist–Luenberger index was calculated to discover the drivers of productivity growth of pulp and paper industries. Our results showed that the pollution treatment of China's pulp and paper industry has made progress in terms of water consumption and water pollution, although the absolute amount of pollution discharge is still large. Chemical oxygen demand emissions are still the first critical influencing factor of pulp and paper industry's inefficiency. Furthermore, efficiency progress was the dominating contribution of the industry's productivity growth between 2010 and 2013. The policies for adjusting the industrial structure of pulp and paper industry have resulted in the scale effects through eliminating backward production capacity and accelerating merger and acquisitions. Moreover, the productivity of pulp and paper industry was underestimated when the undesirable outputs were ignored. It indicates that the stricter environmental regulations have positive effects on paper companies to internalize environmental pressures in the production activities through environmental management. Abstract: Recent years have seen increasing demand for wider application of strategic environmental assessment (SEA), especially SEA of major policies, as a powerful instrument to safeguard the environment during the rapid industrialization and urbanization in China. Debates on SEA are concentrated on its feasibility and effective implementation in practice. This study applies Emergy analysis within the framework of social–economic–natural complex eco-system theory to overcome the limitations of methods used for assessing regional sustainability so far. This established model is tested in the case of Chinese paper industry to assess the sustainability of 5 policy scenarios. The results show that Emergy-based Indices (EbI) are more effective to measure the sustainability of industry complex ecosystem, thus EbI approach is very useful in SEAs on policy scenarios of a given complex ecosystem. Purpose: Unlike ordinary products, festival food gifts like mooncakes in China are prone to excessive packaging, using various materials and complicated decorations, which increases the resource and environmental burdens of consumption. This study evaluated the environmental impacts of different mooncake packaging options, including metal, wood, and paper-based packaging. Methods: This study sampled 64 mooncake packaging types (with low, medium, and high prices) in the Chinese market and employed life cycle assessment modeling to quantify and analyze the environmental impacts of different mooncake packaging types. Based on these results, this study identified environmental-friendly options and shed light on directions to alleviate unnecessary environmental impacts associated with the packaging of massive seasonal festival food. Results and discussion: The weight of packing materials associated with 1 kg of mooncake product ranged from 0.5 to 2.5 kg (with a mean value of 1.2 kg), resulting in average greenhouse gas emissions of 2 kg of CO2-eq, or approximately 67 times the value of ordinary food packing (0.03 kg of CO2-eq). Among the three packaging types, metal-based packaging had the highest environmental impacts, followed by wood and paper-based packaging. The outer packaging was the dominant contributor to the environmental impacts of metal-based packaging, while the impacts of wood and paper-based packaging were primarily derived from the middle packaging materials, which mainly consisted of individual packaging boxes and fixed pallets. Higher-priced mooncakes had heavier packaging weight and greater environmental impacts, suggesting that they bear more environmental responsibility. Conclusion: Excessive and extravagant packaging was responsible for the increasing environmental burden associated with mooncakes. For both mooncake producers and consumers, turning back to the essence of the festival itself will be crucial for mitigating the environmental impacts of packaging. This study is an initial attempt to quantify the environmental impacts of traditional festival food packaging, and the study results facilitate evidence-based policymaking to transition the festival commodity packaging sector in a more sustainable direction. Many field experiments have found high nitrous acid (HONO) mixing ratios in both urban and rural areas during daytime, but these high daytime HONO mixing ratios cannot be explained well by gas-phase production, suggesting that an unknown daytime HONO source (Punknown) could exist. The formula Punknown ≈ 19.60x NO2 x J(NO2) was obtained using observed data from 13 field experiments across the globe. The additional HONO sources (i.e. the Punknown, HONO emissions, and nighttime hydrolysis conversion of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on aerosols) were coupled into the WRFChem model (Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry) to assess the P unknown (hydroxyl, hydroperoxyl, and organic peroxy) radicals (ROx) (= OH + HO2 + RO2) in the coastal regions of China. Results indicated that the additional HONO sources produced a significant improvement in HONO and OH simulations, particularly in the daytime. Elevated daytime-mean Punknown values were found in the coastal regions of China, with a maximum of 2.5 ppb h-1 in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The Punknown produced a 60-250% increase of OH, HO2 and RO2 near the ground in the major cities of the coastal regions of China, and a 5-48% increase of OH, HO2 and RO2 in the daytime meridional-mean mixing ratios within 1000 m above the ground. When the additional HONO sources were included, the photolysis of HONO was dominated in the OH production rate in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou before 10:00 LST with a maximum of 10.01 [7.26 due to the Punknown] ppbh-1 in Beijing, whereas the reaction of HO2 + NO (nitric oxide) was dominated after 10:00 LST with a maximum of 9.38 [7.23] ppb h in Beijing. The whole ROx cycle was accelerated by the additional HONO sources, especially the Punknown. The OH production rate was enhanced by 0.67 [0.64] to 4.32 [3.86]ppbh-1 via the reaction of HO2 + NO, and by 0.85 [0.69] to 4.11 [3.61]ppbh-1 via the photolysis of HONO, and the OH loss rate was enhanced by 0.58 [0.55] to 2.03 [1.92] ppbh-1 via the reaction of OH + NO2 and by 0.31 [0.28] to 1.78 [1.64] ppb h - 1 via the reaction of OH + CO (carbon monoxide) in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Similarly, the additional HONO sources produced an increase of 0.31 [0.28] to 1.78 [1.64] ppbh- 1 via the reaction of OH + CO and 0.10 [0.09] to 0.63 [0.59] ppbh-1 via the reaction of CH3O2 (methylperoxy radical) + NO in the HO2 production rate, and 0.67 [0.61] to 4.32 [4.27]ppbh-1 via the reaction of HO2 + NO in the HO2 loss rate in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The above results suggest that the Punknown considerably enhanced the ROx concentrations and accelerated ROx cycles in the coastal regions of China, and could produce significant increases in concentrations of inorganic aerosols and secondary organic aerosols and further aggravate haze events in these regions. With the development of human society and the acceleration of urbanization, the impact of construction projects on the ecological environment is increasingly attracting attention. Conducting an ecological environmental impact assessment of construction projects is crucial to protect the ecological environment and achieve sustainable development. To estimate how construction projects would affect the value of ecosystem services, this paper develops the China Land Use Feature Data Sets (CLUFS) and uses the Beijing "One Line Four Mines" project as an example. Research found that the project's conservation and restoration zone and the landscape construction zone will significantly enhance the ecosystem regulation services value. The conservation and restoration zone will increase by 30% from the current 1.413 billion yuan per year to 1.836 billion yuan per year, and the landscape construction zone will increase by 69% from the current 400 million yuan per year to 676 million yuan per year. The tourism development zone, dominated by urban construction, will result in a decrease in ecosystem regulation services, from 19.26 million yuan per year to 17.60 million yuan per year by 9%. Overall, the "One Line Four Mines" project achieved a balance of ecological value and surplus. The method proposed in this paper for predicting the impact of ecosystem regulation services value on construction projects can be used to quickly evaluate the effects of different planning schemes on the ecosystem services value of land parcels to help urban planning decision-makers control the condition of land use. It can provide new indicators for the ecological environment department to incorporate ecological benefits into the evaluation system of planning schemes and new methods for evaluating the ecological protection effectiveness of projects. This paper presents an in-depth study and analysis of the impact of foreign trade on cement products and the ecological environment in China through Granger causality analysis. Based on the theoretical basis of foreign trade, ecological environment, and the relationship between them, a general equilibrium model is used to empirically analyze the "three effects" of foreign trade in Chinese cement products on the ecological environment, and the effects of import and export trade on ecological environment and the net effects are calculated, respectively. Then, based on the data of domestic and foreign cement product production and trade, the purpose, scope, and environmental impact factors of the ecological impact of foreign trade of Chinese cement products were determined by the life cycle assessment method, and the inventory analysis was carried out in phases based on the six aspects of nonrenewable resource depletion, global warming, photochemical ozone generation, acidification, eutrophication, and human health damage. The results were characterized and standardized, and the hierarchical analysis method was used to weight the evaluation of each environmental impact type, and finally, the resource consumption coefficient and environmental impact load index values and corresponding ratios were determined based on the green product evaluation method. This paper establishes an index system for the ecological and environmental impacts of foreign trade of cement products, which is a guide for the ecological and environmental impacts of foreign trade of other products in China. The results of the study on the ecological and environmental impacts of foreign trade of Chinese cement products also have important practical significance for the formulation of regulations and standards related to the cement industry, the adjustment of the import and export structure of cement products, and the improvement of production equipment and processes. Research on environmental footprint family (EFF), including these studies of environmental footprints and footprint family, has been widely applied to environmental impact assessment and sustainability evaluation. Although some bibliometric studies have focused on footprint indicators, there is still the lack of the contrast of Chinese and foreign literature in the field of EFF and the conclusions of successful practices at home and abroad in recent years. Unlike most previous papers, we improve the search strategy for collecting accurate documents data and compare China and foreign from a unified international perspective. Two datasets covering 1103 Chinese and 6011 foreign articles between 1996 and 2019 were collected to compare their bibliometric differences in EFF research. We not only comparatively investigate the overview of Chinese and foreign articles in EFF field based on the objects of publications, journals, authors, and institutions, but also explore their differences in the conceptual and intellectual structure from the aspects of keywords and citation analysis. For example, we can deduce that Chinese articles tend to engage in applied research and lack of theoretical innovations and breakthroughs in this field. Globalization and technological revolutions are making the world more interconnected. International trade is one of the major approaches linking the world. Since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan shocked the global supply chain, more attention has been paid to the global impact of large-scale disasters. China is the second largest trader in the world and faces the most frequent natural disasters. Therefore, this study proposes a gravity model for China's bilateral trade tailored to national circumstances, and estimates the impact of natural disasters in China and trading partner countries on Chinese imports and exports. We analyzed Chinese and trading partner statistical data from 1980 to 2012. Study results show that: (1) China's natural disasters have a positive impact on imports, but have no significant impact on exports, (2) trading partner countries' natural disasters reduce Chinese imports and exports, (3) both development level and land area of the partners are important in determining the intensity of natural disaster impacts on China's bilateral trade. Rapid development and agglomeration of manufacturing industries in China inevitably lead to serious environmental pollution problems. The government restrains development of manufacturing industries through environmental regulation policies, but this may affect manufacturing industries agglomeration. Therefore, studying the impact of environmental regulation (ER) on manufacturing agglomeration (MA) is a critical prerequisite for the sustainability of China's manufacturing industry. Based on the panel data of 41 cities in Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China from 2003 to 2017, this paper explores the threshold effect of ER on MA using a panel threshold model and analyzes the heterogeneity impact of ER on MA in different regions and analyzes the dynamic mechanism and contribution of each influencing factor on MA using a panel vector autoregressive model. The results show that (1) there is a double threshold effect of ER on MA, showing an inverted "U"-shaped effect of rising and then falling; there are threshold effects of ER on MA based on foreign direct investment (FDI) and economic development level (EDL). The effect of ER on MA has the threshold effect under different FDI and EDL level, in which the effect based on FDI shows an inverted "U" shape relationship of rising and then falling; the effect based on EDL shows a growing trend. (2) There are 29 cities in YRD region in the "weak regulation" or "strong regulation" stage, both of which are not conducive to MA. (3) ER has a facilitating effect on MA, but with the extension of forecast period, this facilitating effect turns into an inhibiting effect. MA is mainly influenced by itself and transportation conditions (TC). The current Chinese electricity market and carbon market are built relatively independently, without coupling and synergy, and the incoherence between the two markets is beginning to emerge. Carbon emissions costs in the carbon trading market will affect the marginal cost of renewable energy and thermal power in the electricity market, limiting market participants' profitability. In order to simulate and evaluate the changes of LCOE of renewable energy and thermal power in the "electricity-carbon" market environment, this paper presents the calculation method of carbon emission cost of thermal power and CCER benefit of renewable energy based on the relevant regulations in China, and calculates the carbon emission cost transmission rate of thermal power based on Cournot model. In addition, we proposed a method for calculating the LCOE based on the international common calculation method for LCOE, combined with China's taxation policy and the cost and benefit factors of renewable energy and thermal power in the carbon market, and proposed a method for calculating the LCOE applicable to the "electricity-carbon" market environment in China. The findings indicate that as a result of the influence of the carbon market, the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) cost of thermal power will increase, and the profitability of thermal power in the electricity market will be further reduced. Land use and land cover (LULC) changes are of vital significance in fields such as environmental impact assessment and natural disaster monitoring. This study, through an analysis of 1432 papers over the past decade employing quantitative, qualitative, bibliometric analysis, and knowledge graph techniques, aims to assess the evolution and current landscape of deep learning (DL) in LULC. The focus areas are: (1) trend analysis of the number and annual citations of published articles, (2) identification of leading institutions, countries/regions, and publication sources, (3) exploration of scientific collaborations among major institutions and countries/regions, and (4) examination of key research themes and their development trends. From 2013 to 2023 there was a substantial surge in the application of DL in LULC, with China standing out as the principal contributor. Notably, international cooperation, particularly between China and the USA, saw a significant increase. Furthermore, the study elucidates the challenges concerning sample data and models in the application of DL to LULC, providing insights that could guide future research directions to accelerate progress in this domain. Improving green energy efficiency is crucial to promoting China's high-quality economic development and reducing the environmental pollution. In this paper, the Malmquist-Luenberger index measures the green energy efficiency of 30 provinces in China from 2004 to 2019. Based on the measurement results, the spatial Durbin model is used to empirically study the impact of environmental regulation on green energy efficiency and its spatial spillover effects. The results show that China's green energy efficiency is low, and its growth mainly comes from technological progress (TECH) rather than technological efficiency (EFFCH). The eastern region has the highest efficiency of green energy, followed by the West and the lowest in the Central region. The estimation results of the spatial Durbin model show that both environmental regulation and green energy efficiency have a significant spatial correlation. Environmental regulation can improve the green energy efficiency in the local province but inhibit green energy efficiency in the adjacent provinces. The deployment of energy storage systems can play a role in peak and frequency regulation, solve the issue of limited flexibility in cleaner power systems in China, and ensure the stability and safety of the power grid. This paper presents a comprehensive environmental impact analysis of a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system for the storage and delivery of 1 kW-hour of electricity. Quantities of copper, graphite, aluminum, lithium iron phosphate, and electricity consumption are set as uncertainty and sensitivity parameters with a variation of [90%, 110%]. The results show that global warming potential is 9.08E+01 kg CO2 eq. and fossil resource use is 1.21E+03 MJ, with uncertainty ranges of [8.54E+01, 9.23E+01] and [1.15E+03, 1.23E+03], respectively. Electricity consumption during the manufacture and installation process is the greatest contributor to climate change (CO2 eq. emissions), accounting for 39.71% and largely owing to non-renewable sources, followed by cathode materials at 27.85% and anode materials at 18.36%. The disposal and recycling process offers emission reductions but requires an additional 1.17% use of fossil resources. Sobol T indices for the quantity of electricity are the highest for acidification, climate change, fossil resource use, and ionizing radiation. By considering the pathway of China's electricity mix from 2020 to 2050 under the Paris Agreement's 2° target, the potential for environmental emission reduction in the system is evaluated. The results show that the greener electricity mix could lead to a 24.59% reduction in acidification impact, a 35.74% reduction in climate change impact, a 33.24% reduction in fossil resource use, and a 44.13% reduction in ionizing radiation impact. The sustainability of the coking industry is supported by reasonable production profit and environmental quality requirements. The traditional measures substantially increased the related costs for enterprises to reach standards. This paper aims to develop a comprehensive cost combined environmental impact assessment method that is necessary for the analysis of wastewater treatment systems. Typical three coking wastewater treatment processes in China were evaluated. Results showed that eutrophication dominantly contributed to the overall environmental effect. Improving effluent quality could significantly reduce the total environmental impact. In terms of an economic perspective, the price of raw materials was the main factor that affected the operating cost of comprehensive treatment. Based on subsystem analysis, the pretreatment stage accounted for the majority of environmental and cost burdens, respectively reaching 64%-78% and 64%-86%. Optimizing the pretreatment process by enhancing the efficiency of high concentration raw material recovery and substituting toxic raw materials for extractant could reduce the environmental impact and economic cost by 43.8% and 57%, respectively, which was an effective way to improve the potential performance of coking wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Preferential access to scarce resources can bring competitive advantages and better performance to enterprises. However, the existing literature has a relatively single research path on the influencing factors of enterprise resource access, which has lack of sufficient research from the perspective of multidimensional environment. In particular, as an important factor affecting enterprises' access to external resources, few studies have given empirical results on the impact of political factors such as government structure on enterprise resource access. Preferential access to scarce resources can bring competitive advantages and better performance to enterprises. However, the existing literature has a relatively single research path on the influencing factors of enterprise resource access, which lacks sufficient research from the perspective of multidimensional environment. In particular, as an important factor affecting enterprises' access to external resources, few studies have given empirical results on the impact of political factors such as government structure on enterprise resource access. Through the discussion of multidimensional environmental factors, this paper can provide theoretical reference for the reform of government institutions and the establishment of good political relations between enterprises and the government. Focusing on the multidimensional environment of government structure, political relations, and enterprise resource acquisition, this paper takes 129 enterprises in Central China as samples and uses the structural equation model to empirically verify the relationship between the formalization of government structure, liaison mechanism, decentralization, and enterprise resource acquisition, especially the easing effect of political relations. The results show that the formalization of government structure is promoting enterprises to obtain policy resources and financial resources; the liaison mechanism helps enterprises to obtain financial resources and market resources; decentralization has a significant positive impact on enterprises' access to policy resources and market resources; and political connection magnifies the positive effect of government structure on enterprise resource acquisition, but there are differences in different dimensions. With the increase in battery usage and the decommissioning of waste power batteries (WPBs), WPB treatment has become increasingly important. However, there is little knowledge of systems and norms regarding the performance of WPB dismantling treatments, although such facilities and factories are being built across the globe. In this paper, environmental performance is investigated quantitively using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology for a dismantled WPB manufacturing process in Tongliao city of Inner Mongolia Province, China. The functional unit was selected to be one metric ton of processed WPB, and the average data of 2021 were used. The results indicated that WPB dismantling treatments are generally sustainable in their environmental impacts, because the life cycle environmental effects can be neutralized by the substitution of virgin products with recycled counterparts. Of all the processes of dismantlement, Crude Lead Making, Refining, and Preliminary Desulfurization, were the top three contributors to the total environmental burden. The results of the sensitivity analysis showed that increasing photovoltaic power, wind power, and natural gas usage may significantly reduce the burden on the environment. On the basis of our findings, some suggestions are put forward for a policy to promote environmental green growth of WPB treatment. Although this paper is aimed at the power lead–acid battery, the research method is also of significance for the power lithium-ion battery, and we will conduct relevant research on the disassembly process of the power lithium-ion battery in the future. This paper conducts a textual analysis of the reports on the work of local governments to measure local governments' attention to environmental governance and study the impact of these concerns on corporate green innovation. We find evidence that local governments' attention to the environment will significantly improve corporate green innovation, and the government can promote the green technology innovation of enterprises by providing support and strengthening supervision. Further research shows that the uniformity between the central and local governments and environmental attention pressure from higher-level government reinforce the influence of local environmental attention on corporate green innovation. Nitrogen application rates (NARs) is often overestimated over the rice (Oryza sativa L.) growing season in the Taihu Lake region of China. This is largely because only individual nitrogen (N) losses are taken into account, or the inventory flows of reactive N have been limited solely to the farming process when evaluating environmental and economic effects of N fertilizer. Since N can permeate the ecosystem in numerous forms commencing from the acquisition of raw material, through manufacturing and use, to final losses in the farming process (e.g., N2O, NH3, NODue to image rights restrictions, multiple line equation(s) cannot be graphically displayed. leaching, etc.), the costs incurred also accumulate and should be taken into account if economically-optimal N rates (EONRs) are to be established. This study integrates important material and energy flows resulting from N use into a rice agricultural inventory that constitutes the hub of the life-cycle assessment (LCA) method. An economic evaluation is used to determine an environmental and economic NAR for the Taihu Lake region. The analysis reveals that production and exploitation processes consume the largest proportion of resources, accounting for 77.2% and 22.3% of total resources, respectively. Regarding environmental impact, global warming creates the highest cost with contributions stemming mostly from fertilizer production and raw material exploitation processes. Farming process incurs the biggest environmental impact of the three environmental impact categories considered, whereas transportation has a much smaller effect. When taking account of resource consumption and environmental cost, the marginal benefit of 1 kg rice would decrease from 2.4 to only 1.01 yuan. Accordingly, our current EONR has been evaluated at 185 kgNha-1 for a single rice-growing season. This could enhance profitability, as well as reduce the N losses associated with rice growing. The analysis of the impact of central environmental protection inspection (CEPI) on corporate environmental, social, and governance（ESG) performance is important for reforming the operation mechanism of CEPI to improve its effectiveness and fundamentally enhance corporate ESG to achieve sustainable development. This paper empirically examines the mechanism of the impact of CEPI on corporate ESG performance using a multi‐period difference‐in‐differences (DID) model with a research sample of 674 listed firms in China from 2013 to 2018. The results show that CEPI can significantly improve corporate ESG performance, and the strengthening of regulation by local governments is a potential channel. The important internal governance mechanisms of foreign and institutional investor shareholding, as well as the external governance mechanisms of analyst following and media coverage, can effectively strengthen the improvement effects. Further analysis also reveals that there are differences in the effectiveness of different inspection approaches, with "look‐back" inspection outperforming routine inspection. Heterogeneity at the firm and regional levels is also a critical factor in causing differences in the effectiveness of ESG performance improvements. This work not only enriches the research on the micro‐effects of CEPI on firms but also provides a reference for firms to improve their ESG performance and use ESG for investment and business decisions. The cities are the consumption concentration of energy, resources, and the concentration of CO emissions. The cities' area only accounted for 2% in the world's surface; however, their population accounted for about 50% of the total population, and CO emissions accounted for about 80% of the total emissions. The cities lie in a key position in solving the global climate change. China's urbanization level was just exceeding by 50%, which was in the intermediate stage of urbanization. The rapid development of the urbanization process and the expansion of city scale have brought economic growth and all kinds of environmental issues. Therefore, is there an optimal city scale which can make cities maintain economic growth and can also reduce or even avoid the environmental problems in the meantime? The question deserves deep research. Based on the background, the data from 1998 to 2014, and the goals of the cities' economic and environmental benefits, this paper builds the optimal scale model for the cities, and obtain two conclusions: (1) in a certain period and range, the cities have the optimal scale; (2) for the cities in China, the optimal scale is about 1.78 million people. As the significant residuals in the sewage treatment system, sludge treatment and reuse play a pivotal impact on the environmental sustainability study in China. In this paper, two sewage sludge treatment systems have been investigated, calculated, and analyzed, including the conventional treatment system (Scenario A) and improved reuse system (Scenario B), respectively. The results demonstrate that (1) Compared to Scenario A, Scenario B is a comprehensive system, which integrates a sewage sludge treatment system and a brick production system for sludge recycling. (2) After considering the brick system (scenario B), on the one hand, the sludge treatment capacity has been enhanced and raised sludge utilization; on the other hand, negative influences have also generated due to the non-renewable resources input and several outputs. (3) In Scenario A and Scenario B, the input resources part reflects the main impact (about 59.6% in the entire emergy value). (4) In this new paper, the UEVs are 2.73E + 11sej/kg and 6.29E + 11sej/kg in Scenario A and Scenario B, respectively. (5) The emergy sustainability indexes (ESI) are 0.012292 and 0.00848, which express the weak comprehensive effects in Scenario A and Scenario B. (6) Scenario B has a more extensive range of change than Scenario A because of the more resource input for the sensitivity analysis. In China, where energy activities, predominantly driven by fossil fuel combustion, account for nearly 90% of the country's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and coal power alone contributes over 40%, the shift towards carbon neutrality is a critical national ambition. This study conducts a comprehensive comparison of the environmental impacts of solar photovoltaic power generation (SPPG) and coal power, employing both life cycle assessment and ecological footprint analysis. We meticulously analyze the complete lifecycle of SPPG, pinpointing key stages of GHG emissions, and offer nuanced, localized policy recommendations. Our findings indicate that a 1 kWp SPPG module emits 1,601.18 kg of GHGs over its lifespan, equating to 1.35 kg/kW-h per unit of electricity produced--substantially lower than the 4.81 kg/kW-h emitted by coal power, thus highlighting the latter's heightened environmental detriment. Additionally, this study assesses the ecological footprint of both energy sources in Ningxia. SPPG emerges with an ecological surplus, showcasing a per capita footprint of 0.0342 hm², compatible with Ningxia's ecological capacity. In stark contrast, coal power exhibits a sustained ecological deficit over the past 5 years, with a growing per capita footprint of 0.6529 hm², underscoring its unsustainability. This research provides a detailed comparative analysis of the environmental impacts of SPPG and coal power in Ningxia, offering valuable insights for energy policymakers and industry stakeholders. It underscores the urgent need for industrial restructuring towards more sustainable and renewable energy sources, aligning with China's broader objectives of environmental preservation and achieving carbon neutrality. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is widely used to evaluate product's life cycle environmental impact and identify the environmental weaknesses. However, it is difficult for existing LCA software to perform flexible LCA analysis based on the product life cycle characteristics and industry background. Meanwhile, under the existing LCA research model, product designers and manufacturers are usually not LCA evaluators, resulting in a certain time gap between the evaluation results and product improvement. Designers with less experience in green design often find it difficult to identify high environmental impact links in products at different life cycle stages and product levels, and updated products are challenging to meet various environmental restrictions. This paper establishes a multi-module product life cycle analysis model that combines product industry background that includes basic information, assessment information, structural information, and restriction information to achieve the multi-scenario of product LCA in different dimensions in a typical domain. The calculated mechanism of the dynamic power emission factor is built according to the service time and space dimensions. The proposed method forms an integrated environmental performance evaluation of household appliance (EPEHA) system. A software assessment and an optimization method are proposed to improve the EPEHA system. The results of this study show that these proposed methods can improve the timeliness and diversity of results analysis of product LCA in the field of household appliances in China. The universal data exchange format and simple operation interface of the EPEHA system enable people related to the product to quickly understand the environmental impact of the product in different scenarios, even if they lack green design knowledge and professional software training. Informal environmental regulation plays an important role in green innovation, which is of great significance to realize the win-win situation between environmental protection and economic development. However, few studies have focused on the incentive effect of informal environmental regulation on innovation motivation. Based on the panel data of 286 cities from 2003 to 2018, the DID (difference-in-differences) model is used to investigate the impact of pollution Information Transparency Index (PITI) published by ENGOs (Environmental Non-governmental Organizations) on substantive green innovation. The results show that PITI disclosure has a significant positive and robust effect on substantive green innovation in China. Additionally, heterogeneous analysis shows that key environmental protection and highly innovative cities benefit more from PITI disclosure. The effect in the second stage is stronger than in the first stage. Mechanism analysis shows that PITI disclosure enhances substantive green innovation through FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) and human capital channels. Coordinating and managing the contradictions among the environment, resources and economy is an urgent problem in China. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces and cities in China from 2004 to 2017, this paper empirically studies the impact of environmental regulation on China's high-quality economic development and the mediating effect mechanism through the spatial Durbin model and threshold model. The results show that China's high-quality economic development shows a fluctuating upward trend, and the east is higher than the middle and west. Environmental regulation significantly inhibits high-quality economic development, but its impact is moderated by accelerating industrial upgrading, promoting technological innovation, and enhancing foreign direct investment. As the primary driving force, technological innovation has a significant spatial spillover effect. The results show that industrial upgrading has no threshold effect, and technological innovation and foreign direct investment have the characteristics of a 'U' single threshold. Since the reform and opening up, with the progress of science and technology, China's economy developed rapidly, but the attendant environmental problems are becoming increasingly serious, environmental efficiency evaluation has been paid more and more attention in China. This paper used the SBM model to measure the environmental efficiency of the mainland of China's 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities from 2000 to 2010 and analysed the overall situation of the industrial environment efficiency during the 10th and the 11th five-year plan in China. The results show that the overall industrial environmental efficiency of China is low, but it shows a rising trend, and there is a big gap between provinces and regions. At the same time, this paper used the Moran's I index to analyse the spatial correlation of the environmental efficiency. The results show that the industrial environmental efficiency agglomerate in the whole country and it has an obvious spatial autocorrelation. High-high environmental efficiency agglomeration area most distribute in the eastern zone, and low-low environmental efficiency agglomeration area is mainly distributed in the western zone, the location distribution showed significant differences. Over 3 billion plastic bags are consumed in China every day, which brings great challenges to solid waste management. Although Chinese government has implemented the 'plastic ban' in 2008, many people still use plastic bags in their daily lives. This paper examines the determinants of plastic bags usage behaviour among 392 consumers in China from the perspective of the extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB). The extension is implemented by adding three variables: convenience, environmental concern and ethical belief. The empirical results indicate that consumers' attitude towards using plastic bags, subjective norm, perceived behaviour control and convenience are all statistically significantly and positively related to the intention to use plastic bags. Meanwhile, environmental concern and ethical belief have significant but negative effects on consumers' attitude and intention to use plastic bags. The attitude towards using plastic bags partially mediates the effects of consumers' environmental concern and ethical belief on their intention to use plastic bags. In addition, this study confirms the appropriateness of the TPB model and shows that the extended TPB model has good predictive power in understanding consumers' intention to use plastic bags. This paper briefly reviews different types of sustainability indicators being applied and discusses the trends of sustainability in China by time-series scores based on a set of indicators. The analyses indicate that provinces in China with high socioeconomic conditions tend to have better environmental status and stronger capacity to use resources and energy in an efficient manner. The paper then argues that the perspectives of future generations should be taken into account in sustainability assessments, highlighting that the development of an assessment methodology with a time dimension for future generations will be urgently needed to reflect the genuine nature of sustainability. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) has evolved as an environmental management and sustainability tool. Despite common principles shared by EIA globally, there are considerable variations in EIA processes across countries. In this paper, we reviewed and compared EIA processes of China, Queensland State of Australia and Nepal considering five key steps (selection of consultants, report preparation, public participation, report review and approval, and monitoring and evaluations) of EIA. Our review indicated that the EIA is well recognised in legal instruments in all state and countries under consideration and there are both similarities and differences in key steps of EIA. Monitoring of EIA recommendations and the integration of feedbacks from the past and current practices are important in improving EIA processes. This study also found that there are elements for possible improvement in existing EIA processes by each state and country introducing the best practices from others' EIA system. Some of the practices that Nepal can follow from the EIA processes of Queensland and China are licensing and accreditation of individuals and firms to conduct EIA, establishment of separate monitoring unit within regulating department, development of clear guidelines for approvals and monitoring, and the use of independent third-party auditing in EIA monitoring. Polluting firms typically relocate to avoid stringent environmental regulations. Based on China's Two Control Zones (TCZ) policy, we examine the impact of environmental regulation on firms' location decisions. The results show that in the upwind TCZ near interprovincial areas, the distance of polluting firms to the border is significantly reduced after environmental regulation is tightened. Green finance is a financial activity for supporting environmental improvement, for tackling climate change and for conserving and efficiently utilizing resources, which is also a requirement for sustainable economic development. Existing researches on the green finance policies and policy systems are still in their infancy, which are predominantly qualitative analyses, while empirical studies concerning the green finance policies are scarce. This paper combs the development course of China's green finance, and then evaluates the effectiveness of carbon emissions trading pilot programs through robust regression. The results reveal that China's total carbon emissions are still on the rise, though the emission intensity is declining by years. The carbon emission intensity is lower in the pilot areas with relatively developed economy, where the carbon emissions trading pilot programs are obviously effective in reducing the carbon emissions. Referring to the control variables, the increase of foreign direct investment (FDI) and technology progress (TE) both reduce the intensity of carbon emissions, while the increase of per capita GDP will lead to the deterioration of the environment; Environmental support effort (ENVI) has not yet played a role in slowing down environmental pollution. Thus, China's current green finance policy system should strengthen the reform of policy guarantee and market operation, which has certain reference value for further improving the policy system and promoting the development of green finance. Chen and Jing Wu on challenges and opportunities of SEA in China, one by Kaiyi Zhou and William R. Sheate on comparative analysis of the legal requirements of SEA, and one by Cun-Kuan Bao, Ying-Wei Gao, Ying-Lie Zhou, Li Ou-Yang, He Huang, Dahe Jiang and Lex Brown on management framework for SEA.

The middle reaches of the Yellow River (MRYR), located in northern China, are the transition zone between semiarid and semi-humid climates. As one of the climate-sensitive regions in China, MRYR has fragile ecological environment and serious soil loss, which leads to geological disasters such as landslides, collapses and mudslides caused by extreme precipitation to occur. However, scarceness of the high-resolution precipitation data over MRYR limits the assessment of the environmental impacts caused by climate change, especially for extreme precipitation. In this paper, we design a Residual in Residual Dense Block based network (RRDBNet) model for the statistical downscaling of precipitation in MRYR, and compare the proposed RRDBNet with the generalized linear regression model and two popular deep learning-based models. The results show that the proposed RRDBNet model has a good performance on precipitation simulations, which can well reproduce the spatial-temporal characteristics of high-resolution precipitation. Especially, RRDBNet has substantial improvements in extreme precipitation compared with othermodels. On the probability density function of daily precipitation, it is further demonstrated that RRDBNet performs better on extreme precipitation frequency. Our results suggest that the statistical downscaling based on RRDBNet may be an effective tool for historical and future climate simulations from global climate models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The regenerative design framework aims to ‘engage a broader range of possibilities by moving beyond the immediate building and site boundaries’. It implies that the environmental performance of buildings requires a revised definition so that it considers not only the building itself, but also its contribution beyond its own boundary, i.e. neighbourhoods. In high-density cities, outdoor spaces are culturally considered as the extension of one’s living spaces. The environmental performance of neighbourhoods is particularly important to the health and wellbeing of urban inhabitants. This paper aims to define the environmental performance of neighbourhoods in high-density urban context based on the experience acquired in previous studies in Hong Kong over the last 15 years. These studies cover a wide range of environmental issues including urban climate, outdoor thermal comfort, and daylighting design in high-density cities. Subsequent development of the assessment tools for environmental performance of neighbourhoods in Hong Kong is also presented. The framework of stakeholder engagement, as an integral part of the neighbourhood assessment tool, is discussed. This paper highlights the distinctive features of the environmental performance of neighbourhoods in high-density urban context and how it influences the professional practices in Hong Kong. This paper uses both objective and subjective indicators to investigate the impacts of coal mining on the wellbeing of host communities. It also looks at the relationship between these two measurements of wellbeing. Both objective and subjective indicators show that coal mining has no obvious impact on family income, but negative impacts on air quality. Subjective wellbeing indicators also reveal the negative impacts of coal mining on water safety, inflation rate, price of necessities and income disparity. The only positive impact associated with coal mining is the improvement of housing conditions, revealed by only objective indicators. Some objective indicators are good predictors of subjective wellbeing indicators (e.g. income and air quality) using both aggregated data and individual data, others not (e.g. housing and education). The inconsistency between objective and subjective indicators might be attributed to scope issues, scale discordance etc. This paper empirically confirms both sets of indicators are needed when measuring wellbeing, and illustrates approaches to examine the relationship between objective and subjective wellbeing indicators. China has been plagued by hazy weather for a long time. Adjusting the energy consumption structure and reducing fossil energy consumption proportions are key to solving environmental problems. The "Electricity substitution" development strategy advocates "substituting electricity for coal, oil, and gas." To establish an efficient energy consumption structure, the strategy is conducive to an increase in the proportion of electricity in the terminal energy consumption market. Therefore, it is important to comprehensively compare the economic and environmental substitution benefits of electricity and other fossil energies when promoting the electricity substitution strategy. In this paper, the energy substitution cost evaluation model is established to compare economic benefits, and a life cycle assessment calculation method is used to obtain the environmental benefits of electricity substitution. Based on the calculation results, the environmental benefits are quantified as the economic cost with an environmental value standard. The comprehensive economic-environmental evaluation results obtained reveal that in the three substitution directions, the effect of substituting electricity for fuel oil is the most obvious. The substitution index considering the economic and environmental cost is 5.25%. "Substituting electricity for oil" can be used as a priority area to promote the electricity substitution strategy. The sensitivity analysis results reveal that reducing the proportion of coal-fired power generation, improving the proportion of clean electricity, and making strict financial penalties for creating pollution, can play strong roles in promoting electricity substitution. This paper provides a new research perspective for the comparison between electricity and fossil fuels. Faced with both economic and environmental pressures, how to improve energy efficiency in a green way is gradually attracting attention. Reasonable environmental regulations can promote the green transformation of energy and improve green energy efficiency, which is of great practical significance for achieving global sustainable development. This paper measures the green energy efficiency of 30 Chinese provinces in 2019 based on the Super-SBM model, selects five representative antecedent conditions of three environmental regulation dimensions: command-and-control, market-incentive, and voluntary public, and uses fsQCA to explore the group effects and enhancement paths of different types of environmental regulations on green energy efficiency. The results found that (1) there are four green energy efficiency enhancement paths: government pressure type, market mobilization type, government-led public association type, and multiple subject type; (2) commandand-control type environmental regulations play an important role in enhancing green energy efficiency in most provinces; and (3) multiple subject type enhancement paths can achieve higher green energy efficiency. This study investigates the impact of environmental regulation on green energy efficiency in order to provide reference and reference for the improvement of green energy efficiency in China's provinces. This paper discusses China’s policy of developing an ecologically based circular economy (CE). In this paper, CE is understood as the environmental dimension of the wider vision of China as a ‘harmonious society’, formulated by the 16th Party Congress in 2002 in response to the social and environmental problems following in the wake of the unfettered economic growth policy of China after Mao Zedong’s death in 1976. The 18th Party Congress of CCP in 2012 further strengthened the official resolve to develop China as an ‘ecological civilization’ characterized by harmony between man and nature under the epitome ‘Beautiful China’. The paper discusses CE in this wider context. It is based on a review of literature on CE available in English. The aim is to present a more comprehensive understanding and critique of the Chinese version of CE as part of a wider policy for socioeconomic transformation and development of an ecologically based society, than has so far been done. The paper concludes by discussing bottlenecks and challenges confronting the implementation of CE in this wider socioeconomic context. Many dams have been constructed around the world. Compared with the potential losses of life and economy, the environmental impacts caused by dam breach were less analyzed. As a systematic theory, the set pair analysis method deals with both the certainty and uncertainty of a system or process as a whole. But when dealing with the analysis of environmental impacts with obvious uncertainty, the fuzziness feature of the indices was not considered comprehensively. Hence, this paper introduced the connection degree of set pair analysis in five grades, and the cloud model-based weight calculation method to improve the evaluation. The proposed method was applied to the case study of Qianping Reservoir, Henan Province, China, showing that the comprehensive environmental impacts caused by the potential dam breach were medium. The paper describes major developments of environmental impact assessment (EIA) in China since 2003 when its EIA law became effective, with emphasis on those aspects not sufficiently touched upon by most researchers so far. These range from threshold-based categorization, evolution in scoping, expansion and upgrading of a series of technical guidelines for EIA, addition of water and soil conservation plan to EIA, public consultation and social impact assessment to interaction with other major means of environmental management in China (i.e. total pollution load control, discharge permit and cleaner production). Based on a literature review, exchanges with EIA practitioners and the author's daily work on EIA, it is found that EIA in China has evolved into a fairly comprehensive and technically adequate system. The biggest problem lies in its poor enforcement and implementation, which is the focus of this paper. By examining each practical step in reviewing, enforcing and implementing EIA, the paper evaluates EIA's role in optimizing decision-making (e.g. by alternative analysis), EIA implementation and its supervision piloted in China, underlying technical, procedural and institutional issues and concerns, and the disconnect between project EIA and plan/regional EIA, both with regards to theory and practice. The main reasons for weak EIA enforcement and implementation are discussed, which include the political system and incentive mechanisms, institutional arrangements, and regulatory and methodological shortcomings. Rapid expansion of shale gas development in China raises environmental and human health concerns. Several studies present related information on these concerns in the United States and Canada, yet they are few in China at present. This paper presents a series of original and published mineralogical and trace elements data from two gas shales (Niutitang shale and Longmaxi shale) considered as producing gas shale in China. Mineralogical and geochemical data surveyed can be applied to evaluate the potential environment pollutions during shale weathering and hydraulic fracturing. After compilations of the mineralogical and trace elements data, we can conclude that (a) there is generally more pyrite compared with carbonate for Niutitang shales, indicating that Niutitang shales are more prone to generate the hydrogen ions than Longmaxi shales; (b) many of the environmental hazardous trace elements considered here show an association with organic matter and/or pyrite, indicating that these trace elements are prone to mobilize and release during shale weathering and hydraulic fracturing; (c) some environmental hazardous elements like As, Ni, and Ba that have extremely high concentrations in some regions as compared with the screening limits for soil and drinking water should attract more attention; and (d) clay‐rich shale with abundant organic matter may be the most favourable shale gas reservoir for the Niutitang shale, especially for those shales in Lower Yangtze region. The midpoint impact assessment methodology and several weighting methods that are currently used by most building Life cycle assessment (LCA) researchers in China, still have some shortcomings. In order to make the evaluation results have better temporal and spatial applicability, the endpoint impact assessment methodology was adopted in this paper. Based on the endpoint damage oriented concept, four endpoints of resource exhaustion, energy exhaustion, human health damage and ecosystem damage were selected according to the situation of China and the specialties of the building industry. Subsequently the formula for calculating each endpoint, the background value for normalization and the weighting factors were defined. Following that, an endpoint damage oriented model to evaluate the life cycle environmental impact of buildings in China was established. With the aggravation of global warming and the increasing demand for energy, the development of renewable energy is imminent. Floating photovoltaic (FPV) is a new form of renewable energy generation. However, the impact of FPV on the aquatic environment is still unclear. By long-term empirical monitoring and data analysis, this paper reveals the shading effect of large-scale FPV power station on aquatic environment for the first time. The results show that: (1) Compared with the non-photovoltaic (NP) zone, FPV only significantly reduces the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the photovoltaic (P) zone. (2) The concentration of chlorophyll a , nitrate nitrogen and total phosphorus increase, while pH and ammonia nitrogen decrease. FPV only causes an effect of the same order of magnitude as the initial concentration, and has no significant adverse effects on the nutritional status of the water body at a coverage ratio less than 50%. (3) FPV has a cooling effect on the water body during the daytime and a thermal insulation effect at night, with the most pronounced impact on peak water temperature (T w). The heating and cooling process of T w in P zone usually lags behind the NP zone by 1–3 h. The diurnal fluctuation and vertical difference of T w as well as the stability of water body are reduced under the shading of FPV, alleviating the influence of climate change on T w and water body stratification. (4) If 10% of the water area larger than 1 km2 in China are used to develop FPV, more than 900 million tons of CO 2 emissions can be reduced, and about 5 billion m3 water can be saved, which is significant in the context of climate change. Land use cover (LUC) classification is one of the most important applications of optical remotely sensed data, while LUC mapping outcomes are used for global, local mapping, ecosystem assessment and environmental process monitoring. Hence, in this study, in order to evaluate the advantages and drawbacks of supervised classification schemes, the paper chose the optical image data of Landsat 8 OLI in Miyun county to test supervised classification and introduced Parallelepiped Method (PM), Minimum Distance (MD), Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs) to improve classification accuracy of LUC mapping and to obtain the reliable LUC distribution. The four classified images reveal that the study area is dominated by considerable areas of forest land, with the overall accuracy found to be 87.89% (kappa = 0.8524) using SVMs, 85.26% (kappa = 0.8205) using MLC, 82.11% (kappa = 0.7813) using MD, and 74.74% (kappa = 0.6920) using PM. Based on the overall accuracy and kappa statistics, SVMs might be the first option in terms of classification accuracy without taking into account of the time costly and standard PC and laptops. The average electricity consumption per capita in China still has significant room for growth. Under the current rigid residential electricity pricing, it is very important to study how factors other than price can promote electricity conservation among residents. This paper uses micro-survey data of 2018 and 2020 to analyze energy efficiency and the rebound effect through a stochastic energy demand frontier model, as well as to examine the role of news propaganda in this context. The research conclusions are as follows: (1) News propaganda promoting electricity saving can weaken the rebound effect of electricity use, which can lead to better electricity savings. (2) The energy efficiency of residential electricity has improved significantly compared to previous years, and the rebound effect has decreased. (3) Electricity prices have a negative impact on electricity consumption, while income, household size, home area, and extreme temperatures have a positive impact. The economic relationship between China and Myanmar is regarded as a win-win cooperation. However, Chinese investments, especially in extractive and natural resource sectors, are associated with a number of unwanted environmental consequences. Moreover, the environmental impact assessment (EIA) quality of Chinese enterprises has often been criticized. EIA identifies adverse impacts to the environment through evidence-based decision making. On this basis, this paper provides an evaluation of Chinese EIA performance within the natural resources sector through a structured review of 15 environmental impact statements (EISs). This research also evaluates the EISs of the three largest and most controversial projects, the Myitsone Hydropower Dam, Lappadaung Copper Mine and Sino-Myanmar oil and gas pipelines. The findings reveal several omissions, inadequacies and deficiencies in all the projects with a significant number of EISs falling short of satisfactory quality. Through the analysis, the paper summarizes the factors affecting the EIA performance and proposes feasible recommendations to improve EIA practices in Chinese development projects in Myanmar. Environmentally extended input-output analysis (EEIOA) has long been used to quantify global and regional environmental impacts and to clarify emission transfers. Structural path analysis (SPA), a technique based on EEIOA, is especially useful for measuring significant flows in this environmental-economic system. This paper constructs an imports-adjusted single-region input-output (SRIO) model considering only domestic final use elements, and it uses the SPA technique to highlight crucial routes along the production chain in both final use and sectoral perspectives. The results indicate that future mitigation policies on household consumption should change direct energy use structures in rural areas, cut unreasonable demand for power and chemical products, and focus on urban areas due to their consistently higher magnitudes than rural areas in the structural routes. Impacts originating from government spending should be tackled by managing onsite energy use in 3 major service sectors and promoting cleaner fuels and energy-saving techniques in the transport sector. Policies on investment should concentrate on sectoral interrelationships along the production chain by setting up standards to regulate upstream industries, especially for the services, construction and equipment manufacturing sectors, which have high demand pulling effects. Apart from the similar methods above, mitigating policies in exports should also consider improving embodied technology and quality in manufactured products to achieve sustainable development. Additionally, detailed sectoral results in the coal extraction industry highlight the onsite energy use management in large domestic companies, emphasize energy structure rearrangement, and indicate resources and energy safety issues. Conclusions based on the construction and public administration sectors reveal that future mitigation in secondary and tertiary industries should be combined with upstream emission intensive industries in a systematic viewpoint to achieve sustainable development.
