In recent years, a large body of literature has accumulated around the topic of research paper recommender systems. However, since most studies have focused on the variable of accuracy, they have overlooked the serendipity of recommendations, which is an important determinant of user satisfaction. Serendipity is concerned with the relevance and unexpectedness of recommendations, and so serendipitous items are considered those which positively surprise users. The purpose of this article was to examine two key research questions: firstly, whether a user’s Tweets can assist in generating more serendipitous recommendations; and secondly, whether the diversification of a list of recommended items further improves serendipity. To investigate these issues, an online experiment was conducted in the domain of computer science with 22 subjects. As an evaluation metric, we use the serendipity score (SRDP), in which the unexpectedness of recommendations is inferred by using a primitive recommendation strategy. The results indicate that a user’s Tweets do not improve serendipity, but they can reflect recent research interests and are typically heterogeneous. Contrastingly, diversification was found to lead to a greater number of serendipitous research paper recommendations.

Abstract: Effects of mechanical compression and PTFE content on the through-plane gas permeability of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of PEM fuel cells are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A new test bed is designed and built which allows pressure drop and air flow rate measurement for various GDL samples. The measured values are used to calculate the through-plane permeability. Various GDLs are obtained and tested over a wide range of PTFE content and compression ratio. The experimental data show a reverse relationship between the through-plane permeability and both PTFE content and mechanical compression. An existing model for through-plane permeability of planar fibrous structures is revisited to develop a model that accommodates effects of PTFE content and mechanical compression. The proposed model captures the trends of the experimental data for the through-plane permeability, measured in the present study or reported by others. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A new technique was introduced for sand stabilization and re-vegetation by use of lignin sand stabilizing material (LSSM). LSSM is a reconstructed organic compound with lignin as the most dominant component from the extracts of black-liquor issued by straw pulp paper mills. Unlike the polyvinyl acetate or foamed asphalt commonly used for dune stabilization, the new material is plant-friendly and can be used with virescence actions simultaneously. The field experimental study was conducted since 2001 in China's Northwest Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and has been proved that LSSM is effective in stabilizing the fugitive dunes, making the arenaceous plants survive and the bare dune vegetative. The advisable solution concentration is 2% and the optimal field spraying quantity is 2.5 L/m^2. The soil nutrients of the stabilized and greened dune, such as organic matter, available phosphorous and total nitrogen are all increased compared with the control treatment, which is certainly helpful to the growth of arenaceous plants. The technique is worthwhile to be popularized because it is provided not only a new method for desertification control but also an outlet for cleaning contaminants issued from the straw paper mills. In order to design an optimal reinforcement of steel thin-walled beams with composite materials, it is worth analyzing two important, although often overlooked issues, which are the selection of the appropriate thickness of the adhesive layer and the effective anchoring length of the composite tape. This paper, which is part of a wider laboratory study devoted to the strengthening of thin-walled steel profiles, focuses on the second issue. The paper involves a description of laboratory four-point bending tests during which ten thin-walled steel beams made of a rectangular section with dimensions of 120 × 60 × 3 and a length of 3 m were tested. Two beams were taken as reference beams, and the other eight were reinforced using Sika CarboDur S512 carbon fiber composite tape, assuming four different effective anchorage lengths. The impact of the length of the anchoring of the composite tape on the value of the displacements and strains of the tested beams and on the value of the destructive load that caused tape detachment was analyzed. The following phase was numerical analyses carried out in the Abaqus program, which showed high consistency with the results of laboratory tests. In reference to the conducted tests, it was observed that the increase in the anchoring length of the composite tape has a slight impact on the change in the value of strains and displacements in the tested beams. Nevertheless, the increase in the effective anchorage length has a significant impact on the load value at which the composite tapes are detached from the surface of the steel thin-walled beam. The special large-slope V-shaped structure of underwater tunnels changes the ventilation characteristics during tunnel construction, making the traditional experience limited. Therefore, it is urgent to study the influence of the special structure on the safety of the air environment during construction. In this paper, a series of small-scale experiments were conducted to investigate the ventilation characteristics of V-shaped tunnels. The coupled effects of ventilation parameters (distance of duct outlet from working face  L 0 , air velocity at the duct outlet  u 0 ) and structural characteristics (digging length  L d , slope of the uphill section  θ) were considered. The extreme slope of the V-shaped tunnel of 8% was considered. The flow field and pollutant transport law were determined by using CO as a tracer in the experiments. The results show that  u 0  has a positive impact on the air return velocity, while  L d  has a negative impact, and neither of the other two factors has a significant effect. The transport characteristics of CO in V-shaped tunnels differ from those in flat tunnels, with the former tending to cause unconventional areas of high pollutant concentrations in the horizontal sections. Furthermore, the correlations between CO concentration and distance, ventilation time, and the influence factors discussed in this paper are derived from the experimental results. The conclusions provide guidance for the construction of V-shaped tunnels to prevent air pollution in the construction environment and to improve the working conditions of laborers. In recent years, computer vision-based structural displacement acquisition technique has received wide attention and research due to the advantages of easy deployment, low-cost, and non-contact. However, the displacement field acquisition of large-scale structures is a challenging topic as a result of the contradiction of camera field-of-view and resolution. This paper presents a large-scale structural displacement field calculation framework with integrated computer vision and physical constraints using only one camera. First, the full-field image of the large-scale structure is obtained by processing the multi-view image using image stitching technique; second, the full-field image is meshed and the node displacements are calculated using an improved template matching method; and finally, the non-node displacements are described using shape functions considering physical constraints. The developed framework was validated using a scaled bridge model and evaluated by the proposed evaluation index for displacement field calculation accuracy. A new configuration of continuum surgical robot is proposed, whose skeleton is composed of inner and outer layers. The outer layer is composed of miniature rotating modules connected in series and connected by orthogonal hinges, which can ensure the ability to resist unconventional torsion without losing the degree of freedom. The inner layer is a central support column with superelasticity. When bending, its superelasticity can make the overall configuration biased toward constant curvature bending, which is convenient for motion control and according to the new configuration, this paper establishes the kinematics model of the robot. Finally, the motion control experiment of the continuum robot is carried out. After the experiment, the average positioning error of the robot is 2.674 mm, and the average repetitive positioning error is 2.625 mm. This paper proposes a version of the deep-sea environment simulated test system for subsea control modules to solve the problem of incomplete testing systems for electro-hydraulic subsea control modules. Based on the subsea control module test requirements specified in APISTD17F, the test system in this paper is a highly integrated system, including a test hydraulic power unit, a control module test bench, a signal simulator, an electronic test unit, an umbilical simulator, a high-pressure chamber, and an incubator. Firstly, the design indicators of the test system were determined by analyzing the various functions of the subsea control module and its working environment. Secondly, the design scheme for the test system was proposed, and a detailed design was carried out. Finally, a hydro-electrical subsea control module for the Bohai Sea was fully tested with this system, with tests including the qualification test and the factory acceptance test. The test results show that all parts of the test system coordinated well and have achieved the design indicators, and the test system can simulate the working environment and complete a land test. The effectiveness and feasibility of the test system have been verified through the test. By adopting this system, the risk of subsea control module failure can be minimized, laying the foundations for future research and improvement of subsea control module testing equipment. Calculating the parameters of the ground shock induced by an underground explosion is a complex energy coupling problem. It is difficult to establish a unified ground shock coupling law from limited test data. This paper summarizes the research results obtained at home and abroad and systematically analyzes the coupling mechanism of craters formed by an underground explosion and the ground shock. The differences between the concepts of "closed-explosion critical depth" and "equivalent closed-explosion critical depth" are clearly explained. The spreading of the ground shock energy is attributed to the explosive expansion of the air cavity, revealing a linear relationship between the volume of the cavity region (or the volume of the crack region) and the ground shock energy associated with the underground explosion. The proportionality factor is related to the mechanical properties of the medium and is independent of the magnitude of the explosion equivalent. Based on this, a theoretical calculation formula and conversion method for the ground shock coupling coefficient were established. Explosion tests were conducted in clay and Plexiglass under varying burial depths. The test results were consistent with the theoretically calculated results. The food crisis has increased demand for agricultural resources due to various factors such as extreme weather, energy crises, and conflicts. A solar greenhouse enables counter-seasonal winter cultivation due to its thermal insulation, thus alleviating the food crisis. The root temperature is of critical importance, although the mechanism of soil thermal environment change remains uncertain. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the soil thermal environment of a solar greenhouse in Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, employing a variety of analytical techniques, including theoretical, experimental, and numerical simulation, and deep learning modelling. The results of this study demonstrate the following: During the overwintering period, the thermal environment of the solar greenhouse floor was divided into a low-temperature zone, a constant-temperature zone, and a high-temperature zone; the distance between the low-temperature boundary and the southern foot was 2.6 m. The lowest temperature in the low-temperature zone was 11.06 °C and the highest was 19.05 °C. The floor in the low-temperature zone had to be heated; the lowest value of the constant-temperature zone was 18.29 °C, without heating. The minimum distance between the area of high temperature and the southern foot of the solar greenhouse was 8 m and the lowest temperature reading was 19.29 °C. The indoor soil temperature tended to stabilise at a depth of 45 cm, and the lowest temperature reading at a horizontal distance of 1400 mm from the south foot was 19.5 °C. The Fluent and LSTM models fitted well and the models can be used to help control soil temperature during overwintering in extreme climates. In this paper, a novel T-shaped steel–concrete composite shear wall (TSCCW) is proposed. Low-cycle reciprocating tests were carried out on the TSCCW to investigate its performance in terms of its damage characteristics, hysteretic properties, energy dissipation capacity, stiffness degradation and ductility. A numerical model was established on the basis of the tests, and the correctness of the numerical model was verified. Afterwards, parameters such as shear span ratio, axial load ratio, rebar diameter, steel thickness, concrete strength grade and axial compression position were analyzed. The results show that the shear span ratio has a great influence on the performance of the TSCCW. A reduction in the shear span ratio from 2.1 to 1 reduces its stiffness by 333%. An increase in the axial load ratio will increase the load carrying capacity and stiffness of the TSCCW, and the deformation capacity will first increase and then decrease; it is recommended that the axial load ratio should be taken as 0.4. Increasing the steel thickness will improve the load carrying capacity, stiffness, deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity of the TSCCW to a certain extent. The contents of alkali and alkaline earth metals are higher in Zhundong coal, and there are serious problems of slagging and fouling during the combustion process. Therefore, it is of great significance to reveal the mechanism of slagging and fouling in the boiler of Zhundong coal. In this paper, first-principle calculations based on density functional theory are used to study the competition mechanism of alkaline metal oxides during the combustion process in Zhundong coal by establishing the Na2O(110)/CaO(100)-SiO2(100) double-layer interface model. The results show that the bond lengths of the surface of Na2O(110) and CaO(100) with SiO2(100) after adsorption were generally lengthened and the value of bond population became smaller, which formed a stable binding energy during the reaction. The electron loss of Na is 0.05 e, the electron loss of Ca is 0.03 e, and the electron loss of Na2O is greater than that of CaO. The charge transfer on the surface of Na2O with SiO2 is obviously higher than that of CaO and the orbital hybridization on the surface of CaO with SiO2 is weaker than that on the surfaces of Na2O with SiO2. Na2O is easier to react with SiO2 than CaO. The adsorption energies on the surface of Na2O and CaO with SiO2 are −5.56 eV and −0.72 eV, respectively. The adsorption energy of Na2O is higher than that of CaO, indicating that Na2O is more prone to adsorption reactions and formation of Na-containing minerals and other minerals, resulting in more serious slagging. In addition, the XRD analyses at different temperatures showed that Na-containing compounds appeared before Ca-containing ones, and the reaction activity of Na2O is stronger than that of CaO in the reaction process. This paper presents an experimental study of the seismic behavior of concrete columns reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. Seven full-scale square columns were tested under sustained compressive axial loading combined with monotonic or cyclic lateral loading. The test program included two types of reinforcement (GFRP and steel bars) and different axial load levels (0, 20, and 33% of the axial capacity). The experiments showed that GFRP reinforcement could be used in concrete columns subjected to lateral loads, provided that ties are capable of properly confining the concrete core up to failure, thereby contributing to improving their deformation and energy dissipation capacity. Plasma stimulation is a form of waterless fracturing as it requires that only the wellbore be filled with an aqueous fluid. The technique creates multiple fractures propagating in different directions around the wellbore. The intent of this paper is to present an experimental and numerical investigation of the degree of competitiveness of plasma stimulation with hydraulic fracturing, especially in the case of stimulating tight formation. Several cases were run experimentally. The samples included limestone and sandstone to investigate plasma fracturing in different rock types. In addition, the main goal of the experiments was to study the creation of fracture(s) under confining stresses, the type of rock, the amount of electrical energy used in the experiment, and the length of the wire to generate the plasma reaction. A laboratory plasma equipment was designed and used to accomplish the experimental work. The experiments were then numerically matched using a finite element numerical simulator, HOSS developed by LANL (Los Alamos National Lab). HOSS was developed to simulate high-strain-rate fractures such as those created by plasma stimulation. It accounts for mixed-mode fracture mechanics which are tensile and shear fractures. The simulator governing equations obey the conservation of mass and momentum in a solid-mechanics sense and account for the nonlinear deformation of rock material. The matching of the experiment allowed us to validate the HOSS simulation of the process and showed that the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental work. Using the HOSS simulator, we also investigated the effect of higher energy levels and/or short release time on a cement rock model. The pressure profile that is developed due to the energy release can vary in the peak pressure and the release time. The results showed that the plasma fracturing technique is an effective stimulation method in sandstone and limestone. Plasma fractures were developed in the rock samples and extended from the sample wellbore to the outer boundaries. The shape of the pressure pulse has an impact on the developed fractures. Moreover, the effect of plasma stimulation on natural fractures was studied numerically. It was found that natural fractures can arrest the plasma-generated fractures that propagate from the wellbore to the outer boundaries. In this paper, the indoor loading and unloading tests and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring tests of marble under different stress paths are carried out. Based on the AE events in the process of rock failure, this paper introduces the concept of information entropy of Shannon, and defines a new cumulative state information entropy which can characterize the degree of disorder and accumulation of rock microcracks. This paper also offers a comparative analysis on the evolution law of rock entropy under different paths and different loading and unloading conditions. The results show that the newly defined cumulative state information entropy can well reflect the order change of the loading and unloading process system, and there are significant differences in entropy evolution under different stress paths, but the entropy generally evolves with the development of the system from "quasi-equilibrium" to "far away from equilibrium". The higher the unloading level is, the greater the confining pressure is, the stronger the unloading disturbance is, and the entropy value drops sharply at the starting point of unloading. The faster the unloading rate is, the later the rock fracture instability is, and the later the entropy drop point of the system appears. The change rate of entropy value ∣ΔH∣ = 0.1 can be used as the precursory signal threshold of rock confining pressure unloading disturbance damage and peak rupture instability. Liquid hydrogen is one of the high-quality energy carriers, but a large leak of liquid hydrogen can pose significant safety risks. Understanding its diffusion law after accidental leakage is an important issue for the safe utilization of hydrogen energy. In this paper, a series of open-space large-volume liquid hydrogen release experiments are performed to observe the evolution of visible clouds during the release, and an array of hydrogen concentration sensors is set up to monitor the fluctuation in hydrogen concentration at different locations. Based on the experimental conditions, the diffusion of hydrogen clouds in the atmosphere under different release hole diameters and different ground materials is compared. The results show that with the release of liquid hydrogen, the white visible cloud formed by air condensation or solidification is generated rapidly and spread widely, and the visible cloud is most obvious near the ground. With the termination of liquid hydrogen release, solid air is deposited on the ground, and the visible clouds gradually shrink from the far field to the release source. Hydrogen concentration fluctuations in the far field in the case of the cobblestone ground are more dependent on spontaneous diffusion by the hydrogen concentration gradient. In addition, compared with the concrete ground, the cobblestone ground has greater resistance to liquid hydrogen extension; the diffusion of hydrogen clouds to the far field lags. The rapid increase stage of hydrogen concentration at N8 in Test 7 lags about 3 s behind N12 in Test 6, N3 lags about 7.5 s behind N1, and N16 lags about 8.25 s behind N14. The near-source space is prone to high-concentration hydrogen clouds. The duration of the high-concentration hydrogen cloud at N12 is about 15 s, which is twice as long as the duration at N8, increasing the safety risk of the near-source space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Erectile dysfunction (ED) predominantly affects men in their 40–70s and can lead to poor quality of life. One option for ED treatment is surgical implantation of an inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP). However, they can be associated with negative outcomes including infection, migration or fibrosis. To improve outcomes, the interaction between the IPP device and surrounding tissues needs further investigation and this could be achieved using pre-clinical testbeds, but they need to be informed by extensive tissue testing. In this study, an experimental approach is adopted to characterise the mechanics of horse penile tissue and establish a testing protocol for penile tissue. The whole penis segments were tested in plate compression tests to obtain whole penis behaviour which is necessary for validation of a pre-clinical testbed, whilst tensile and compression tests were performed on individual penile tissues, namely corpus cavernosa and tunica albuginea. The second part of the paper deals with the development of a computational model employing an inverse finite element approach to estimate the material parameters of each tissue layer. These material parameters are in good agreement with the experimental results obtained from the individual tissue layers and whole organ tissue tests. This paper presents the first study proposing realistic nonlinear elastic material parameters for penile tissues and offers a validated testbed for IPPs. Erectile Dysfunction (ED) affects over half the male population aged 40–70 potentially leading to poor quality of life. Patients not responding to conventional treatments of ED, are advised to use penile prostheses which can create an erection using implanted inflatable cylinders. A significant drawback of such prostheses, however, is the substantial tissue damage they can induce during their usage. Preclinical testbeds, including computational and bench-top models, could offer an efficient means of improving device designs to mitigate this damage but such testbeds require extensive knowledge of penile tissue properties. In this study, the authors determine penile tissue mechanics and apply an inverse FE approach to characterise the penile material properties required to validate preclinical models of the penis. With the convenient and fast requirements for construction in bridge engineering, prefabricated assembly technology is widely applied in engineering construction. Typically, prefabricated bridge decks are connected through cast-in-place wet joints. Wet joints, as the primary load-bearing parts of bridge decks, undergo complex stress and are prone to cracking and damage. Particularly in the negative bending moment region of bridges, the influence of tensile stress on wet joints is more severe, thus enhancing the mechanical performance and crack resistance of joints becomes crucial. This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of prefabricated reinforced concrete bridge deck panels with variable cross-sections under negative bending moments, focusing on the performance of Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) wet joints. Full-scale experimental tests were conducted on a 176 m steel truss composite continuous rigid bridge, employing C50 concrete panels with UHPC wet joints. Results show three distinct stages: elastic, crack initiation and propagation, and failure. The maximum failure load reached 822 kN, with a maximum displacement of 21.64 mm. Concrete strains indicate compressive stress near the wet joint and tensile stress near the loading positions. Cracks primarily develop at the wet joint interface and propagate under increasing load, ultimately leading to flexural–shear failure near the variable cross-section of the wet joint. Numerical simulations using ABAQUS/CAE (2020) corroborate experimental findings, closely matching load-displacement curves and identifying damage locations. The study demonstrates that UHPC wet joints significantly enhance crack resistance, meeting design requirements for improved mechanical performance in bridge structures subjected to negative bending moments. Scutellarin is widely distributed in Scutellaria baicalensis, family Labiatae, and Calendula officinalis, family Asteraceae, and belongs to flavonoids. Scutellarin has a wide range of pharmacological activities, it is widely used in the treatment of cerebral infarction, angina pectoris, cerebral thrombosis, coronary heart disease, and other diseases. It is a natural product with great research and development prospects. In recent years, with in-depth research, researchers have found that wild scutellarin also has good therapeutic effects in anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidation, anti-virus, treatment of metabolic diseases, and protection of kidney. The cancer treatment involves glioma, breast cancer, lung cancer, renal cancer, colon cancer, and so on. In this paper, the sources, pharmacological effects, in vivo and in vitro models of scutellarin were summarized in recent years, and the current research status and future direction of scutellarin were analyzed. Vietnam currently has 26 coal-fired power plants in operation, emitting a total amount of coal ash about 16 million tons/year of Fly Ash (FA) and Coal Bottom Ash (CBA). FA and CBA increase the costs of landfill space, and negatively affect the environment. Now, concrete lagging with steel arches is the biggest proportion of the type of current structural support in underground mining (about 70÷80%) in Quang Ninh coal area, Vietnam. The main objective of this research is to propose an optimized proportion of the FA and CBA of thermal power plants used in concrete mixture on making concrete lagging in SVP steel arches. This paper also presents the results of an experimental study using FA and CBA for making concrete lagging with the optimized proportion as cement and sand by the Advantest 9 (Control-Italy) system at the Laboratory of Underground and Mining Construction of Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG). The study result can be concluded that cement and sand replacement by FA and CBA are useful in lower grades of concrete such as M200 in making laggings of SVP steel arches of the underground mines in Quang Ninh coal area and in contributing to the environment protection. This paper proposed to use the impinging jets mixing process to improve the quality of residential heating and air conditioning. The main objective is to meet the requirements of occupants in terms of thermal comfort and air quality by proposing an optimal solution for the thermal homogenization improvement in the rooms by changing of the diffusers geometry and their arrangement in the ventilation and air-conditioning devices in blowing systems. This study involves both experimental and numerical studies of a three diffusers configurations composed of four peripheral jet with similar geometries and a central jet with a different geometry. All the configurations consist of four equidistant peripheral swirling jets, only the central jet that makes the difference between them. The configuration 1 includes a swirling central jet, on the other hand a circular central jet for the configuration 2 and finally a lobed central jet for configuration 3. The velocity and temperature distributions of the three configurations are investigated experimentally and numerically. Experimentally, the multifunction thermo-anemometer have been used to measure flow temperature and velocity. The dynamic and temperature features are more radially spread and get better homogeneity in configuration 3 and this is due to the energy distribution on the radial plane, which is relatively better than configuration 1 and configuration 2. The second part deals with numerical predictions of the dynamics and thermal fields of the three configurations considered. The study was realized using a RANS-based turbulence model. The numerical results are in reasonable agreement with our experiments for the three configurations. With this study, detailed information on the structure of the resulting flow is very useful to deepen the understanding of the physics of jet interaction and to validate turbulence models. The turbulence simulation is realized by the k-ω-SST model. This model gives a satisfactorily predicts the axial drop in velocity and temperature over the entire study range, demonstrating its ability to handle the interaction between swirling and lobe jets. Our results show that the geometry of the central diffuser is essential. This allows the axial velocity to decrease faster than configurations 1 and 2. This paper presents a proposed static test and numerical study on the mechanical properties of steel-shell–concrete-structure-immersed tunnel nodes, which is used to investigate the seismic performance and damage mechanism of steel-shell–concrete-structure-immersed tunnel nodes. The test is based on the immersed tube tunnel project in the deep China channel, and the nodes representing the outermost and innermost vertical walls of the immersed tube tunnel, i.e., L-shaped and T-shaped node specimens, were designed and fabricated at a scale of 1:5, and the specimens were mainly subjected to the combined effect of vertical axial compression and lateral displacement loads. The test results show that the L-shaped node will exhibit brittle damage characteristics with high lateral load carrying capacity and energy dissipation capacity during the ultimate load phase, while the T-shaped node exhibits bending damage with better ductility, so the outermost vertical wall should be locally reinforced to ensure the necessary ductility of the structure in the actual project. In addition, by comparing the numerical calculation and experimental results, it is found that there is good agreement in terms of load–displacement curves and crack distribution, which shows that the modeling method proposed in this paper can accurately simulate the mechanical properties of immersed tunnel nodes and can guide the section design of immersed tunnels with steel shell–concrete structures. With additional features and increasing cost advantages, e-textbooks are becoming a viable alternative to paper textbooks. One important feature offered by enhanced e-textbooks (e-textbooks with interactive functionality) is the ability for instructors to annotate passages with additional insights. This paper describes a pilot study that examines the effects of instructor e-textbook annotations on student learning as measured by multiple-choice and open-ended test items. Fifty-two college students in a business course were randomly assigned either a paper or an electronic version of a textbook chapter. Results show that the e-textbook group outperformed the paper textbook group on the open-ended test item, while both groups performed equally on the multiple-choice subject test.
