Based on remote sensing data and investigations, this paper focuses mainly on a general evaluation of environmental quality in the middle-upper areas of the Yellow River region using GIS technology, Arc/Info, and ArcView. In this paper, the upper areas of the Yellow River regions are divided into three parts: the north-east Qinghai-Tibet Plateau ecosystem areas, the Erdos Plateau-Hetao Plain ecosystem areas, and the Loess-Plateau ecosystem areas. The study analyses the current environmental situation and the overall environmental quality in each ecosystem area and determines the law of distribution of environmental quality in the three areas. Finally, the paper provides some suggestions to improve the ecological environment in each area, in the hope of yielding a scientific foundation based on planning ecological environment protection in the Yellow River basin. Abstract: Using the research results of eco-environmental evaluation for reference, this paper adopts three periods images which are respectively acquired in 1990, 2000, and 2010 as the main data sources. With the support of GIS technology, this paper quantitatively analyzes and evaluates the eco-environment situation and changes of the Tekes watershed by means of comprehensive index method and builds the thematic map of ecological environment factors. The results shows that the eco-environmental quality of the Tekes watershed has been in good condition, but in general, it tends to degrade slowly. With the comparison of the three periods assessment results, it is discovered that the eco-environment quality of 1990 is the best in Tekes watershed. There is a trend of decreasing by 4.0809 around 2000 year, but in 2010, it has improved slightly. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Aeolian sandy land in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin has attracted the attention of many researchers. However, its dynamics as well as its relevance to various factors has rarely been reported with integrated studies. In this paper, spatio-temporal dynamics of the aeolian sandy land in the basin was studied by interpreting Landsat images acquired from 1975, 1990, 2000, and 2008 with the help of geographic information system (GIS) technology. Spatially, the results showed a decreasing trend from west to east, which is from the Maquanhe wide valley in the headwater area to the middle and lower reaches of the river basin. Temporally, aeolian sandy lands in the basin showed a slow increasing trend, with an increase of 10.5% during the 1975–2008 period, spreading most quickly during the period of 1990–1999. The factors related to dynamics of aeolian sandy land were analyzed from the perspectives of two driving factors, climate changes and human activities. The climate-dominated natural factors are the internal driving forces for the development of aeolian sandy lands, and the human factors are the external driving forces responsible for the increase of the aeolian sandy land area. Abstract: Rapid land use change has taken place in many arid and semi-arid regions of China over the past decade, such as in Yellow River Basin. In this paper, changes in the land use pattern of the Yellow River Basin were analyzed using Landsat TM data in 1990, 1995 and 2000. The aim was to improve the understanding of changes in land use with a view to identifying potentially more sustainable systems of land use. Firstly, the mathematical methodology was explored and developed for spatial pattern changes of land use, which include the degree index model of land use dynamic, index model of land use degree, mean center model of land use and transformation model of land use. Based on these models, the changing spatial patterns of land use were calculated and analyzed. During the period 1990–2000, the areas of cropland, built-up land and unused land all increased, the area of cropland increased dramatically by 2917km2, while the areas of grassland and woodland decreased by 4668 and 33km2, respectively. Meanwhile, the spatial pattern of land use also experienced a great change. Then the driving factors of land use change were investigated, the governmental policies on eco-environmental protection, population growth and meteorological conditions were the major factors that caused the land use change in the past decade. The extent of economic losses due to a natural hazard and disaster depends largely on the spatial distribution of asset values in relation to the hazard intensity distribution within the affected area. Given that statistical data on asset value are collected by administrative units in China, generating spatially explicit asset exposure maps remains a key challenge for rapid postdisaster economic loss assessment. The goal of this study is to introduce a top-down (or downscaling) approach to disaggregate administrative-unit level asset value to grid-cell level. To do so, finding the highly correlated 'surrogate' indicators is the key. A combination of three data sets-nighttime light grid, LandScan population grid, and road density grid, is used as ancillary asset density distribution information for spatializing the asset value. As a result, a high spatial resolution asset value map of China for 2015 is generated. The spatial data set contains aggregated economic value at risk at 30 arc-second spatial resolution. Accuracy of the spatial disaggregation reflects redistribution errors introduced by the disaggregation process as well as errors from the original ancillary data sets. The overall accuracy of the results proves to be promising. The example of using the developed disaggregated asset value map in exposure assessment of watersheds demonstrates that the data set offers immense analytical flexibility for overlay analysis according to the hazard extent. This product will help current efforts to analyze spatial characteristics of exposure and to uncover the contributions of both physical and social drivers of natural hazard and disaster across space and time. Soil erosion is a serious environmental and production problem in China. In particular, natural conditions and human impact have made the Chinese Loess Plateau particularly prone to intense soil erosion area. To decrease the risk on environmental impacts, there is an increasing demand for sound, and readily applicable techniques for soil conservation planning in this area. This work aims at the assessment of soil erosion and its spatial distribution in hilly Loess Plateau watershed (northwestern China) with a surface area of approximately 416.31 km. This study was conducted at the Caijiamiao watershed to determine the erosion hazard in the area and target locations for appropriate initiation of conservation measures using the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE). The erosion factors of RUSLE were collected and processed through a geographic information system (GIS)-based approach. The soil erosion parameters were evaluated in different ways: The R-factor map was developed from the rainfall data, the K-factor map was obtained from the soil map, the C-factor map was generated based on Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper image and spectral mixture analysis, and a digital elevation model with a spatial resolution of 25 m was derived from topographic map at the scale of 1:50,000 to develop the LS-factor map. Support practice P factor was from terraces that exist on slopes where crops are grown. By integrating the six-factor maps in GIS through pixel-based computing, the spatial distribution of soil loss in the study area was obtained by the RUSLE model. The results showed that spatial average soil erosion at the watershed was 78.78 ton ha year in 2002 and 70.58 ton ha year in 2010, while the estimated sediment yield was found to be 327.96 × 10 and 293.85 × 10 ton, respectively. Soil erosion is serious, respectively, from 15 to 35 of slope degree, elevation area from 1,126 to 1,395 m, in the particular area of soil and water loss prevention. As far as land use is concerned, soil losses are highest in barren land and those in waste grassland areas are second. The results of the study provide useful information for decision maker and planners to take appropriate land management measures in the area. It thus indicates the RUSLE-GIS model is a useful tool for evaluating and mapping soil erosion quantitatively and spatially at a river watershed scale on a cell basis in Chinese Loess Plateau and for planning of conservation practices. The article discusses a study on the effect of land use/cover change (LUCC) on Lake Qinghai Watershed on the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Noted is the vulnerability and sensitivity of the lake's ecosystem to climate change and human interference. Through the use of geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS), the researchers were able to analyze LUCC pattern in the watershed between 1977 and 2004. Based on the analysis, the watershed is dominated by grassland and water body. It also revealed that LUCC magnitude in the watershed is low.
