The notion of 1-planarity is among the most natural and most studied generalizations of graph planarity. A graph is 1-planar if it has an embedding where each edge is crossed by at most another edge. The study of 1-planar graphs dates back to more than fifty years ago and, recently, it has driven increasing attention in the areas of graph theory, graph algorithms, graph drawing, and computational geometry. This annotated bibliography aims to provide a guiding reference to researchers who want to have an overview of the large body of literature about 1-planar graphs. It reviews the current literature covering various research streams about 1-planarity, such as characterization and recognition, combinatorial properties, and geometric representations. A 1-plane graph is a graph embedded in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once. A 1-plane graph is optimal if it has maximum edge density. A red–blue edge coloring of an optimal 1-plane graph G partitions the edge set of G into blue edges and red edges such that no two blue edges cross each other and no two red edges cross each other. We prove the following: ( i ) Every optimal 1-plane graph has a red–blue edge coloring such that the blue subgraph is maximal planar while the red subgraph has vertex degree at most four; this bound on the vertex degree is worst-case optimal. ( ii ) A red–blue edge coloring may not always induce a red forest of bounded vertex degree. Applications of these results to graph augmentation and graph drawing are also discussed. A drawing of a given (abstract) tree that is a minimum spanning tree of the vertex set is considered aesthetically pleasing. However, such a drawing can only exist if the tree has maximum degree at most 6. What can be said for trees of higher degree? We approach this question by supposing that a partition or covering of the tree by subtrees of bounded degree is given. Then we show that if the partition or covering satisfies some natural properties, then there is a drawing of the entire tree such that each of the given subtrees is drawn as a minimum spanning tree of its vertex set. This paper starts the investigation of a constrained version of the point-set embed-dability problem. Let G = (V,E) be a planar graph with n vertices, G′ = (V′,E′) a subgraph of G, and S a set of n distinct points in the plane. We study the problem of computing a point-set embedding of G on S subject to the constraint that G′ is drawn with straight-line edges. Different drawing algorithms are presented that guarantee small curve complexity of the resulting drawing, i.e. a small number of bends per edge. It is proved that: • If G′ is an outerplanar graph and S is any set of points in convex position, a point-set embedding of G on S can be computed such that the edges of E\E′ have at most 4 bends each. • If S is any set of points in general position and G′ is a face of G or if it is a simple path, the curve complexity of the edges of E\E′ is at most 8. • If S is in general position and G′ is a set of k disjoint paths, the curve complexity of the edges of E \ E′ is O(2k). Hamiltonicity, book embeddability, and point-set embeddability of planar graphs are strictly related concepts. We exploit the interplay between these notions to describe colored sets of points and to design polynomial-time algorithms to embed k-colored planar graphs on these sets such that the resulting drawings have $\mathcal{O}(k)$ bends per edge. A digraph is upward planar if it admits a planar drawing where all edges are monotone in the upward direction. It is known that the problem of testing a digraph for upward planarity is NP-complete in general. This paper describes an O(n4)-time upward planarity testing algorithm for all digraphs that have a series-parallel structure, where n is the number of vertices of the input. This significantly enlarges the family of digraphs for which a polynomial-time testing algorithm is known. Furthermore, the study is extended to general digraphs, and a fixed parameter tractable algorithm for upward planarity testing is described, whose time complexity is O(dt · t · n3 + d · t2 · n + d2 · n2) where t is the number of triconnected components of the digraph and d is an upper bound on the diameter of any split component of the digraph. Our results use the new notion of upward spirality that, informally speaking, is a measure of the "level of winding" that a triconnected component of a digraph G can have in an upward planar drawing of G. Abstract: This paper studies how to compute radially layered drawings of graphs by taking into account additional geometric constraints which correspond to typical aesthetic and semantic requirements for the visualization. The following requirements are considered: vertex centrality, edge crossings, curve complexity, and radial distribution of the vertices. Let R and B be two sets of points such that the points of R are colored red and the points of B are colored blue. Let G be a planar graph such that |R| vertices of G are red and |B| vertices of G are blue. A bichromatic point-set embedding of G on R ∪ B is a crossing-free drawing of G such that each blue vertex is mapped to a point of B, each red vertex is mapped to a point of R, and each edge is a polygonal curve. We study the curve complexity of bichromatic point-set embeddings; i.e., the number of bends per edge that are necessary and sufficient to compute such drawings. We show that O(n) bends are sometimes necessary. We also prove that two bends per edge suffice if G is a 2-colored caterpillar and that for properly 2-colored caterpillars, properly 2-colored wreaths, 2-colored paths, and 2-colored cycles the number of bends per edge can be reduced to one, which is worst-case optimal. Abstract: This paper investigates the basic problem of computing crossing-free straight-line 3D grid drawings of graphs such that the overall volume is small. Motivated by their relevance in the literature, we focus on families of graphs having constant queue number and on k-trees. We present algorithms that compute drawings of these families of graphs on 3D grids consisting of a constant number of parallel lines and such that the overall volume is linear. Given a set of n points in the plane, any β-skeleton and [γ0,γ1]-graph can be computed in quadratic time. The presented algorithms are optimal for β values that are less than 1 and [γ0,γ1] values that result in non-planar graphs. We show a numerically robust algorithm that computes Gabriel graphs in quadratic time and degree 2. We finally show how a β-spectrum can be computed in optimal O(n2) time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We determine the reachability properties of the embeddings in R3 of a directed path, in the graph-theoretic sense, whose edges have each been assigned a desired direction (East, West, North, South, Up, or Down) but no length. We ask which points of R3 can be reached by the terminus of an embedding of such a path, by choosing appropriate positive lengths for the edges, if the embedded path starts at the origin, does not intersect itself, and respects the directions pre-assigned to its edges. This problem arises in the context of extending planar graph embedding techniques and VLSI rectilinear layout techniques from 2D to 3D. Many different approaches have been proposed for the challenging problem of visually analyzing large networks. Clustering is one of the most promising. In this paper, we propose a new clustering technique whose goal is that of producing both intracluster graphs and intercluster graph with desired topological properties. We formalize this concept in the (X,Y) -clustering framework, where Y is the class that defines the desired topological properties of intracluster graphs and X is the class that defines the desired topological properties of the intercluster graph. By exploiting this approach, hybrid visualization tools can effectively combine different node-link and matrix-based representations, allowing users to interactively explore the graph by xpansion/contraction of clusters without loosing their mental map. As a proof of concept, we describe the system Visual Hybrid (X,Y)-clustering (VHYXY) that implements our approach and we present the results of case studies to the visual analysis of social networks. Abstract: Cognitive experiments show that humans can read graph drawings in which all edge crossings are at right angles equally well as they can read planar drawings; they also show that the readability of a drawing is heavily affected by the number of bends along the edges. A graph visualization whose edges can only cross perpendicularly is called a RAC (Right Angle Crossing) drawing. This paper initiates the study of combinatorial and algorithmic questions related to the problem of computing RAC drawings with few bends per edge. Namely, we study the interplay between number of bends per edge and total number of edges in RAC drawings. We establish upper and lower bounds on these quantities by considering two classical graph drawing scenarios: The one where the algorithm can choose the combinatorial embedding of the input graph and the one where this embedding is fixed. Abstract: This paper studies the problem of computing orthogonal drawings of graphs with labels on vertices and edges. Our research is mainly motivated by Software Engineering and Information Systems domains, where tools like UML diagrams and ER-diagrams are considered fundamental for the design of sophisticated systems and/or complex data bases collecting enormous amount of information. A label is modeled as a rectangle of prescribed width and height and it can be associated with either a vertex or an edge. Our drawing algorithms guarantee no overlaps between labels, vertices, and edges and take advantage of the information about the set of labels to compute the geometry of the drawing. Several additional optimization goals are taken into account. Namely, the labeled drawing can be required to have either minimum total edge length, or minimum width, or minimum height, or minimum area among those preserving a given orthogonal representation. All these goals lead to NP-hard problems. We present MILP models to compute optimal drawings with respect to the first three goals and an exact algorithm that is based on these models to compute a labeled drawing of minimum area. We also present several heuristics for computing compact labeled orthogonal drawings and experimentally validate their performances, comparing their solutions against the optimum. Let C be the family of 2D curves described by concave functions, let G be a planar graph, and let L be a linear ordering of the vertices of G. L is a curve embedding of G if for any given curve Λ∈C there exists a planar drawing of G such that: (i) the vertices are constrained to be on Λ with the same ordering as in L, and (ii) the edges are polylines with at most one bend. Informally speaking, a curve embedding can be regarded as a two-page book embedding in which the spine is bent. Although deciding whether a graph has a two-page book embedding is an NP-hard problem, in this paper it is proven that every planar graph has a curve embedding which can be computed in linear time. A 1 -plane graph is a graph embedded in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once. A NIC-plane graph is a 1-plane graph such that any two pairs of crossing edges share at most one end-vertex. An edge partition of a 1-plane graph G is a coloring of the edges of G with two colors, red and blue, such that both the graph induced by the red edges and the graph induced by the blue edges are plane graphs. We prove the following: ( i ) Every NIC-plane graph admits an edge partition such that the red graph has maximum vertex degree three; this bound on the vertex degree is worst-case optimal. ( ii ) Deciding whether a NIC-plane graph admits an edge partition such that the red graph has maximum vertex degree two is NP-complete. ( iii ) Deciding whether a 1-plane graph admits an edge partition such that the red graph has maximum vertex degree one, and computing one in the positive case, can be done in quadratic time.
