Alternately celebrating and denouncing the media as a mechanism for generating fame and dictating the tastes of mass culture, Emerson had become a major figure of mass culture himself, because he saw that the papers could be improved through young authors such as those he took on as his personal projects for professional development. His instrumentalist approach to mass media meant that he dedicated himself to its elevation in order to improve upon rather than dismiss its shortcomings. I argue that his contempt for the worst of the press was not evidence of his abandonment of mass culture, for he coursed through its channels incessantly, but instead was part of a broader diagnosis of its flaws directly serving his prescription for cultural and individual reform. That prescription specifically aimed to establish the most edifying personal and social dimensions of his romantic philosophy within the exigencies of modern mass culture by harnessing the power of accelerating communication technologies. Much has been written about Karl Marx's work as a philosopher, sociologist and political theorist, but much less is known about his career as a journalist. From 1852 to 1862 Marx wrote as a foreign correspondent for Horace Greeley's New York Daily Tribune, an immensely popular American newspaper with a wide range of domestic and international coverage. Between 1853 and 1859, he wrote hundreds of commentaries, many of them concerning British colonization of India. Marx used this opportunity to criticize capitalism and test his theories about society. Until he stopped covering Indian issues for the paper in 1859, Marx unabashedly criticized British rule in India and in the process demonstrated to American readers his style of argument. This article surveys the history of Horace Greeley's New-York Tribune to explore the social unease and contradictory impulses that gave rise to an American liberal tradition. It was said that the Tribune was both an organ for Republican champions of bourgeois property rights and the most influential reform newspaper in the U.S. Some writers of the newspaper formulated a social democratic ideology that showed a profound ambivalence toward the spread of market individualism and industrial capitalism. The term social democracy was used to describe the expanse between Marxism and bourgeois liberalism, a discursive space where the New-York Tribune was an important popular participant. It was found that the Tribune's social democratic commitments were highly dynamic, even in the two decades prior to the Civil War.
