Abstract Patterned paper sensors such as letter- and barcode-shaped sensors have become a subject of growing interest due to the potential in information embedding and data interpretation, which brings a requirement on easily fabricating these paper-based analytical devices. The answer, in part, may lie in the influence of paper structure on the performance of paper-based analytical devices. After investigating the effect of physical properties of paper on precipitation and non-precipitation assays for detecting Fe(II), here we propose a simple and promising approach for barrier-free paper patterning. Without building hydrophobic boundaries, the precipitates of sensing reactions on low-bulk and medium-thick paper substrates allow patterned signal readout directly. As a proof of concept, barrier-free patterned paper sensors for detecting heavy metals were fabricated, with detection limits of 0.25 ppm for Fe(II), 0.4 ppm for Ni(II), and 0.5 ppm for Cu(II). Our work provides a valuable perspective on fabrication of patterned paper sensors. There are many scientific studies conducted by using duckweed to remove heavy metals from waste water. Duckweed plants have been used first time with this study for the removal of heavy metals from the paper-based packaging used as raw materials in recovered paper production. Objective of this study was to use an environmental friendly method to remove or decrease heavy metals from paper, paperboard and corrugated board. A mixture of Lemna minor, L. gibba and Spirodela polyrrhiza from duckweed taxa was used for the phytoremediation applications. The phytoremediation application was carried out on paper-based samples for 7 days in a batch reactor system to remove heavy metals such as lead, zinc, cadmium, nickel, copper, chrome and aluminum from the samples. Results showed that the duckweed plants can be used during the removal or decrease in heavy metal concentrations in the paper based packaging. It was determined that there was no removal or reduction heavy metals in the surface treated paper packages with low grammage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paper, a readily available renewable resource, comprises of interwoven cellulosic fibers, which can be functionalized to develop interesting low-cost adsorbent material for water purification. In this study, polyethyleneimine (PEI)-functionalized paper was used for the removal of hazardous pollutants such as Au and Ag nanoparticles, Cr(VI) anions, Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Cu 2+ cations from spiked water samples. Compared to untreated paper, the PEI-coated paper showed significant improvement in adsorption capacities toward the pollutants investigated in this study. Kinetics, isotherm models, pH, and desorption studies were carried out to study the adsorption mechanism of pollutants on the adsorbent surface. Adsorption of pollutants was better described by pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model. Maximum adsorption of anionic pollutants was achieved at pH 5 while that of cations was at pH > 6. Overall, the PEI-functionalized paper showed interesting Langmuir adsorption capacities for heavy metal ions such as Cr(VI) (68 mg/g), Ni 2+ (208 mg/g), Cd 2+ (370 mg/g), and Cu 2+ (435 mg/g) ions at neutral pH. In addition, the modified paper was also used to remove Ag-citrate (79 mg/g), Ag-PVP (46 mg/g), Au-citrate (30 mg/g), Au-PVP (17 mg/g) nanoparticles from water. Desorption of NPs from the adsorbent was done by washing with 2 M HCl or thiourea solution, while heavy metal ions were desorbed using 1 M NaOH or HNO 3 solution. Analytical filter papers are generally made of fibrous cellulose which has the potential to adsorb metal ions. In this study, blue band ashless filter paper was used to demonstrate one of the sources of error in the determination of the concentration of Fe2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions. For this purpose, the metal ion content of standard solutions in the 1-100 mg/l concentration range was analysed via FAAS before and after the filtration process. The corresponding results and the calculated percentage errors due to adsorption are presented. The effect of pH on the adsorption process was also investigated. Activated carbon and soil samples were spiked with each metal ion and the solid phases from the resulting solutions were separated by both filter paper methods and centrifugation. In the statistical estimation of the results, the paired t-test was applied for non-filtered and filtered solutions in the concentration range 1-100 mg/l using the data analysis tools available in MS Excel®. The use of filter paper caused systematic errors, particularly at lower metal concentrations, and hence centrifugation or a filtering process using techniques other than filter paper is favoured as a better approach towards estimating the concentration of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution.
