The primary heat transfer source in the conventional multi-cylinder drying of paper and board is conduction. Conduction is facilitated by high-tension contact with steam-heated cylinders, while convective drying, the main mass transfer source, operates as heated air flows over the article web in the pockets. This conduction process occurs at elevated temperatures and contact pressures to ensure effective contact between the wet paper web and the heated cylinders. The contact pressures and temperatures of the hot surface significantly influence the conductive drying characteristics. This research paper presents an experimental study that involves designing a simple lab-scale setup with in-situ and continuous sensing capabilities for various commercially available grades of paper and board. Embedded thermocouples measure the temperatures of the heated platen and the sheet, allowing the collection of flux data to determine heat transfer characteristics. The goal of this study is to ascertain the instantaneous contact coefficients for different basis weights as a function of moisture content. Paper-based microfluidic fuel cell (PMFC) has attracted great attention in the microfluidic fuel cell field in recent years. It utilizes the spontaneous capillary flow of reactant solutions in paper-based porous substrate to achieve passive transportations of fuel and oxidant, solving the fluid driving issue encountered in traditional microfluidic fuel cells and thus having broad application prospects in medical detection, wearable devices, micro sensors, environmental monitoring, and many other fields. However, the commercialization of this technology is impeded by the low output performance caused by the limited mass and energy transfer in PMFCs. To enhance the mass and energy transfer in PMFCs, numerous research studies have been conducted via experimental optimization of the cell materials and structures. Numerical analyses focusing on the structure–activity relationship of PMFCs were also performed recently. To provide a comprehensive and thorough review about the efforts devoted to improving performance of PMFC, research papers relevant to PMFC since its invention in 2014 have been extracted in this work and significant works were filtered to highlight the exciting advancements. The experimental studies were classified and discussed based on the key components involved in the PMFC system, followed by a critical review of the limited computational models. Potential directions for future research were also provided, aimed at overcoming the current technological challenges in PMFCs. Importantly, an innovative strategy of multi-scale simultaneous optimization of the cell properties is proposed considering the typical multi-scale feature of the PMFC system, which could inspire the designing of advanced cell materials with optimal multi-scale structures for applications of PMFCs. An experimental method using a novel design to characterize the air flow and water removal during vacuum dewatering in paper manufacturing is discussed. The experimental setup involves the intermittent application of vacuum, similar to commercial systems, using a rotating disk with slot opening arrangement. The system is capable of commercially realistic residence times of the order of milliseconds. The intermittent application of vacuum simulates vacuum dewatering on commercial paper machines. The air flow rate is calculated from changes in pressure and temperature in the vacuum tank underneath the sample. The role and importance of air flow during vacuum dewatering is studied by accurately measuring the air flow, properly taking into account the leaks during vacuum dewatering. The method described here provides for the first time accurate air flow and water removal data during vacuum dewatering. Methods of analysis of the experimental data are also presented. Steam heating characteristics of wet paper are studied experimentally and numerically. Experimental results show that suction pressure enhances energy absorption in the wet paper and decreases temperature difference in the paper thickness direction, and effects of suction pressure strongly appear in the high-permeability paper. Experiments also indicate that the absorbed energy rate is decreased with increasing in the heating time. Temperature, moisture, and pressure distributions in the paper thickness direction are calculated from the numerical simulation model. From the numerical simulation it is found that increasing of the moisture content and thickness of the condensation region reduce the absorbed energy rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A general model for through drying of tissue was developed based on the equations of continuity in combination with correlations for heat and mass transfer. The model incorporates different geometric descriptions together with corresponding heat and mass transfer correlations for flow through cylindrical conduits and flow through packed beds of cylindrical fibers. At low intensities, i.e., at low airflow rates and low drying air temperatures, the model shows very good agreement with experimental data found in the literature and accurately predicts a period of constant drying rate due to saturation of the drying air. However, at higher drying intensities, the model predicts drying rates that are generally higher than what is found in experimental studies described in the literature. The model also predicts a period of constant drying rate that has not been observed in experiments at higher drying intensities. To illustrate the effect of nonuniform pore size distribution on the average drying rate, a model including a variable pore size distribution was developed. The results show that the early onset of the falling rate period in through drying at higher intensities could be explained by channelling effects caused by a nonuniform pore size distribution. A general, dynamic model describing the drying mechanisms of paper has been developed. The model includes shrinkage and predicts temperature, moisture, and pressure profiles. It has been evaluated against steady-state as well as dynamic measurements on a multicylinder paper dryer. The results revealed critical sections where low web strength and maximum gas pressure occur. Measurements of the outer cylinder temperature provide reliable information on the accuracy of the predicted moisture profile since they show the position where the paper surface is dry. A mathematical model describing the heat and mass transfer in the dryer section of a paper machine has been applied to the production data from four paper machines. Model predictions for the machine speed are compared to actual machine speeds for a total of 163 data sets. The mathematical model assumes that the temperature and moisture content remain homogeneous in the thickness direction of the sheet. For three paper machines producing paper with basis weights ranging from 0.056 to 0.159 kg d.s./m2 the model predictions are adequate. For the paper machine producing the heaviest grades with basis weights ranging from 0.189 to 0.390 kg d.s./m2 the model predictions are flawed by a systematic error. For low machine velocities/high basis weights the machine velocity is over-predicted and for high machine velocities/low basis weights the machine velocity is under-predicted. This systematic error is caused by the assumption of homogeneous moisture content and temperature within the sheet being severely in error for thick sheets. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The present study investigates two models—two limiting cases—for the internal heat and mass transfer in a multicylinder dryer: the first model assumes that complete redistribution of heat and moisture in the thickness direction occurs instantaneously. The second model assumes that moisture transfer occurs only by vapor diffusion and that heat transfer takes place by conduction and condensation. The two models are written in dimensionless form, and applied for the same set of standard paper machine data. For basis weights below approximately 0.05 kg d.s./m2 the results are so close that the first, simple model is sufficient. A higher limiting basis weight—approximately 0.16 kg d.s./m2—was previously indicated by comparison of model predictions, assuming the simple model, to extensive sets of machine data from four different paper machines.
