Determining the methanol partition coefficient (K ow ) in octanol/water system is important to assess the risk of its impact to humans and the environment. In this paper, we report a novel method for the determination of the K ow of methanol with headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC), using a three-phase equilibrium-based phase ratio variation approach. Three headspace vials with different phase ratios [(1) 0.2 mL of water plus 3 mL of octanol, (2) 1 mL of water plus 3 mL of octanol and (3) 1 mL of water plus 10 mL of octanol] were used in the experiment. After pre-standing at 25 °C for > 10 h and equilibrating in the headspace oven at a temperature of interest for additional 25 min, the methanol signals of the vapor phase (i.e., the headspace) in these vials were measured by HS-GC, from which the K ow of methanol can be calculated based on the established equations. The results showed that the method has good precision (within 0.06 log unit in standard deviation) and acceptable accuracy (with method error within 0.5 log unit). A correlation between the K ow of methanol and temperature extrapolated the K ow values in a temperature range of interest. This work reports on a full evaporation headspace gas chromatographic (FE HS-GC) method for simultaneously determining the ethanol (EtOH) and methanol (MeOH) content in wines. A small sample (10μL) was placed in a headspace sample vial, and a near-complete mass transfer of ethanol and methanol from the liquid sample to the vapor phase was obtained within three minutes at a temperature of 105°C, which allowed the measurement of the EtOH and MeOH content in the sample by GC. The results showed excellent precision and accuracy, as shown by the reproducibilities of 1.02% and 2.11% for EtOH and MeOH, respectively, and recoveries that ranged from 96.1% to 104% for both alcohols. A novel method for the determination of the diffusion coefficient (D) of methanol in water and olive oil has been developed. Based on multiple headspace extraction gas chromatography (MHE-GC), the methanol released from the liquid sample of interest in a closed sample vial was determined in a stepwise fashion. A theoretical model was derived to establish the relationship between the diffusion coefficient and the GC signals from MHE-GC measurements. The results showed that the present method has an excellent precision (RSD<1%) in the linear fitting procedure and good accuracy for the diffusion coefficients of methanol in both water and olive oil, when compared with data reported in the literature. The present method is simple and practical and can be a valuable tool for the determination of the diffusion coefficient of volatile analyte(s) into food simulants from food and beverage packaging material, both in research studies and in actual applications., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. This study reports on a rapid method for the determination of methanol in paper-based materials by alkaline extraction, coupled with headspace analysis. Methanol partition equilibria between solid-liquid phases and vapor-liquid phases were conducted in two separate containers, from which an equation for calculating the total methanol content in the original paper sample was derived. It was found that the extraction equilibrium of methanol from solid sample could be achieved within 5min at room temperature using a high-speed disintegrator, and a subsequent neutralization step is an effective way to prevent methanol from being regenerated at high temperature during headspace equilibration. The results showed that the relative standard deviations for reproducibility tests were in the range of 1.86-6.03%, and the recoveries were in the range of 92.3-107%. The present method is simple and practical; it can be an efficient tool for quantifying the methanol content in paper-based materials and thus play an important role in the investigation of methanol migration behavior in food and beverage packaging., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. This study reports on a method for determination of methanol in paper products by headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC). The method is based on the hydrolysis of the pulp or paper matrix, using a phosphoric acid solution (42.5%) as the medium at 120 °C in 5 h (excluding air contact) in order to release matrix-entrapped methanol, which is then determined by HS-GC. Data show that, under the given conditions of hydrolysis, no methanol was formed from the methoxyl groups in the material. Reproducibility tests of the method generated a relative standard deviation of <3.5%, with recovery in the range of 93.4-102%. The present method is reliable, accurate, and suitable for use in batch testing of the methanol content in paper-related materials. The method can play an important role in addressing food safety concerns that may be raised regarding the use of paper materials in food and beverage packaging.

This paper reports on a desiccated full evaporation headspace gas chromatographic (FE HS-GC) technique for determination of the methanol content in dilute mill effluents. Anhydrous K(2)CO(3) was selected as the preferred salt for eliminating the water in the sample in the headspace sample vial. The results showed that the addition of 12 g K(2)CO(3) made it possible to introduce a larger sample size (up to 1 mL) into the FE HS-GC measurement, thereby increasing the sensitivity of the technique. At the given equilibration temperature (105°C), a near-complete mass transfer of methanol from the liquid phase to vapor phase (headspace) was achieved within 10 min. Replicate samples showed that the relative standard deviation of the method was less than 1.5%. Further, the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.12 μg and the recovery ranged from 95 to 104%. This paper reported a full evaporation headspace gas chromatographic (GC) technique for determination of methanol content in black liquors (pulping spent liquor). In this method, a very small volume (10-20 microL) of liquor sample is introduced into a headspace sample vial (20 mL) and heated up to a temperature of 105 degrees C. A near-complete mass transfer of methanol from the liquid phase to vapor phase (headspace), i.e., a full evaporation, can be achieved within 3 min. The methanol in the headspace of the vial is then measured by GC. The present method is simple, rapid and accurate.

Ozone-enhanced catalytic oxidation of methanol has been conducted at mild temperatures of 100-250 degrees C using a V2O5/ TiO2 catalyst prepared by the sol-gel method. The catalyst was characterized using XRD, surface area measurements, and temperature-programmed desorption of methanol. The oxidation of methanol with ozone in the absence of a catalyst gave about 30% conversion at 100 degrees C. Methanol oxidation over a V2O5/TiO2 catalyst at 100 degrees C gave very little conversion with oxygen, whereas the conversion increased to 80% with ozone. Methanol, having an inlet stream concentration of 15 000 ppmv, can be completely oxidized to CO(x) with an ozone-to-methanol ratio of 1.2, a temperature of 150 degrees C, and a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 60 000 h(-1). The apparent activation energy with ozone was calculated to be ca. 40 kJ/mol, which is much lower than that calculated with oxygen (60 kJ/mol). At low methanol conversion methyl formate was the main product, whereas higher conversions favored oxidation to CO(x). The results imply a consecutive reaction of adsorbed methanol species, favoring selectivity toward methyl formate at lower temperatures and ozone-to-methanol ratios and CO(x) at higher temperatures and ozone-to-methanol ratios. Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics was used to model the reaction with and without ozone in the feed. The model parameters were obtained using least-squares fit to a selected set of experimental data, and the model was subsequently compared to all experimental data obtained in this study.

Air emissions from the pulp and paper industry frequently contain reduced sulfur compounds (RSC), such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS) mixed with volatile organic compounds (VOC) (e.g., methanol, MeOH) and it is desirable to treat either one or both of these groups of compounds. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of VOC (MeOH) on the biofiltration of DMS. Results obtained from continuous experiments using three bench-scale biofilters packed with inorganic material clearly show that MeOH has a positive effect (11-fold increase) on the biofiltration of DMS. Further experiments indicate that MeOH addition enhances biomass concentration and viability (threefold) in the biofilters. However, a suspension of MeOH addition causes a rapid significant increase (twofold) in the removal rate of DMS, suggesting that the presence of MeOH also has a competitive effect on DMS biodegradation. This negative effect was also confirmed in batch experiments. The decrease of biofilter performance with time for a long-term suspension of MeOH addition indicates that MeOH addition is necessary to sustain a high removal rate of DMS in inorganic biofilters. Results on metabolic products of DMS biodegradation demonstrate that DMS is almost completely converted to sulfate in the absence of MeOH, while it is partially oxidized to elemental sulfur in the presence of MeOH.
