Solar interfacial evaporation based on wood-derived materials has been considered a promising strategy for desalination and wastewater purification. Herein, we adopted delignified wood (DW) as the water transport substrate and lignosulfonate (LS)-modified narrow-band gap semiconductor nickel disulfide (NiS 2 ) as the light-absorbing agent (LS-NiS 2 ) to fabricate a high-efficiency evaporator (LS-NiS 2 @DW). On the one hand, the high absorbance (>95%) within a broad wavelength range and excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of LS-NiS 2 endow efficient solar energy utilization. On the other hand, the hydrophilicity of DW facilitates water activation, which results in a lower evaporation enthalpy of LS-NiS 2 @DW (1274.4 kJ kg -1 ) than that of pure water. By combining LS-NiS 2 and DW, LS-NiS 2 @DW achieved an evaporation rate as high as 2.80 kg m -2 h -1 under one sun irradiation (1 kW m -2 ), and the evaporation efficiency reached 87.4%. Notably, LS-NiS 2 @DW exhibits a high evaporation rate (2.42-2.69 kg m -2 h -1 ) in simulated seawater for 24 h with no salt crystals formed on the surface. Moreover, LS-NiS 2 @DW shows high antibacterial activity with about 90% reduction in bacterial survival rate. This work could provide new perspectives for the design of a high-efficiency wood-based photothermal evaporator.

Electroplating effluent contaminated with heavy metals posed a major threat on the aquatic ecosystems. The effect of the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) enriched sludge on simultaneous removals of sulfate and nickel was identified. Batch tests showed that SRB biogenic precipitation could completely eliminate the nickel (100 %) with sodium lactate as carbon source at pH 7 within 3 d, and enhanced in the presence of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ , while inhibited at high concentrations. The formation of NiS 2 (confirmed by XRD, EDS and FTIR) indicated that the nickel was removed mainly through chemical bond. RDA analysis showed that COD/S ratios and the iron had the greatest influence on the performance. High-throughput sequencing indicated that the SRB enriched sludge was dominant with Desulfovibiro (43.3 %) at genus level. Finally, a pilot-scale experiment with SRB biological precipitation demonstrated that it could partially replace chemical precipitation for removing sulfate and nickel, and greatly improved the removals of ammonia-N, total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the sequential Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic process. This approach could greatly minimize the secondary contamination and chemicals dosing for pH adjusting and chemical coagulation. Therefore, SRB-based metal removal performance is a promising technology to realize a high-rate and low-cost process for treating practical sulfate rich metal-laden wastewater. The unique electrocoagulator proposed in this study is highly efficient at removing Ni-EDTA, providing a potential remediation option for wastewater containing lower concentrations of Ni-EDTA (Ni ≤ 10 mg L -1 ). In the electrocoagulation (EC) system, cylindrical graphite was used as a cathode, and a packed-bed formed from iron scraps was used as an anode. The results showed that the removal of Ni-EDTA increased with the application of current and favoured acidic conditions. We also found that the iron scrap packed-bed anode was superior in its treatment ability and specific energy consumption (SECS) compared with the iron rod anode. In addition, the packed density and temperature had a large influence on the energy consumption (ECS). Over 94.3% of Ni and 95.8% of TOC were removed when conducting the EC treatment at an applied current of 0.5 A, initial pH of 3, air-purged rate 0.2 L min -1 , anode packed density of 400 kg m -3 temperature of 313 K and time of 30 min. SEM analysis of the iron scraps indicated that the specific area of the anode increased after the EC. The XRD analysis of flocs produced during EC revealed that hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) were the main by-products under aerobic and anoxic conditions, respectively. A kinetic study demonstrated that the removal of Ni-EDTA followed a first-order model with the current parameters. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) forms stable complexes with toxic metals such as nickel due to its strong chelation. The electro-Fenton (EF) process using a cathode made from palladium (Pd), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and carbon felt, fed with air, exhibited high activities and stability for the removal of 10 mg L(-1) EDTA-Ni solution. Pd/RGO catalyst was prepared by one-pot synthesis; the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated nanoparticles and RGO were well distributed on carbon felt, forming three dimensional architecture with both large macropores and a mesoporous structure. The cyclic voltammetric results showed that the presence of RGO in Pd/RGO/carbon felt significantly increased the current response of two-electron reduction of O2 (0.45 V). The key factors influencing the removal efficiency of EDTA-Ni, such as pH, current and Fe(2+) concentration, were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the removal efficiency of EDTA-Ni reached 83.8% after 100 min EF treatment. Mechanism analysis indicated that the introduction of RGO in Pd/RGO/carbon felt significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic activities by inducing •OH in the EF process; direct H2O2 oxidation still accounted for a large amount of EDTA-Ni removal efficiency.

A series of Ni-based catalysts were prepared using hydrogen reduction of Ni/Al hydrotalcite-like compounds (Ni/Al HTlcs) synthesized by coprecipitation. The physico-chemical properties of Ni/Al hydrotalcite-like compounds and the corresponding Ni-based catalysts were characterized using inductively coupled plasma (ICP), BET surface areas, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results indicated that Ni/Al HTlcs with layered structures could be successfully prepared by the coprecipitation method, and the characteristic HTlcs reflections were also observed in the XRD analysis. The NiO and Ni0 phases were identified in all Ni-based catalysts, which displayed randomly interconnected pores and no layer structures. In addition, the studies also found the Ni/Al HTlcs and Ni-based catalysts had high specific surface areas, low pore volumes and low pore diameters. The catalytic hydrogenation of ethyl acetate to ethanol with Ni-based catalysts was also investigated. Among the studied catalysts, RE1NASH-110-3 showed the highest selectivity and yield of ethyl acetate to ethanol, which were 68.2% and 61.7%, respectively. At the same time, a major by-product, butyl acetate, was formed due to an ester-exchange reaction. A proposed hydrogenation pathway for ethyl acetate over Ni-based catalysts was suggested.
