Helianthus annuus is a potential metal accumulator plant, which can find application in cadmium (Cd) phytoremediation and provide economic gains in terms of oil yield. This study is focused on Cd accumulation analysis, physiological and biochemical responses of five varieties of H. annuus (DRSF-108, DRSF-113, LSFH-171, Phule Bhaskar and KBSH-44). Plantlets of all varieties were treated with various Cd concentrations (10, 50, 100, 300 and 500 mg kg−1) for 20, 40 and 60 days. DRSF-108 showed the maximum total Cd accumulation (430.52 mg kg−1) in whole plant while minimum accumulation was observed in KBSH-44 (150.66 mg kg−1) at 500 mg kg−1 Cd after 60 days. The highest level of proline and polyphenol in DRSF-108 were 27.206 µmol g−1 fw and 6.86 mg g−1 fw, respectively. Antioxidant enzymes (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase) also showed increased activity in response to Cd treatment. SEM-EDX analysis of potential accumulator genotype, DRSF-108, showed the distribution of intracellular Cd into plant tissues. Therefore, it is concluded that among five varieties, DRSF-108 was the most potential Cd accumulator and had a higher capacity for Cd tolerance compared to other varieties. Our findings may allow us to extend variety DRSF-108 for sustainable farming and Cd remediation. Phytoremediation of environmental contaminants is a promising strategy, however, the success depends on the use of suitable plants. Helianthus annuus is a good phytoremediator plant and the use of most promising genotype is desirable. This work evaluated five genotypes of H. annuus for cadmium accumulation and identified the best variety, DRSF-108 that can be used for cadmium remediation. Chromium (Cr) is a heavy metal that poses a grave threat to the ecosystem including plants. Chromium is very harmful to plants due to its effects on many physiological and metabolic pathways culminating in a negative impact on plant's growth, development, and ability to take up nutrients. Plants have developed physiological, biochemical, and molecular ways of defense against Cr, such as by augmenting antioxidant potential to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS). A number of genes have been discovered to play a significant role in the defense mechanisms of plants against Cr, for example, genes associated with the activation of phytochelatins, metallothioneins, and those of enzymes like glutathione-S-transferases. Along with this, a few miRNAs have been found to be associated in alleviating Cr stress and, to augment plant tolerance by controlling transcription factors, HSPs, and the expression of a few proteins and hormones. Defense pathway genes and miRNAs have been used for the generation of transgenic phytoremediator plants. Not only do the transgenic plants have a higher tolerance to Cr, but they also act as hyperaccumulators for Cr and have the potential to remediate other heavy metals. This article describes about environmental Cr contamination, Cr effects on plants, different genes and miRNAs involved in Cr stress mitigation and use of candidate genes, microRNAs for creating transgenic plant systems for phytoremediation, and the applications of CRISPR technology. It is expected that the integration of omics approach and advanced genomics will offer scope for more effective phytoremediation of Chromium in the coming years. Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans and animals, but lead to toxicity when taken in excessive amounts. Plants are the main source of dietary Se, but essentiality of Se for plants is still controversial. However, Se at low doses protects the plants from variety of abiotic stresses such as cold, drought, desiccation, and metal stress. In animals, Se acts as an antioxidant and helps in reproduction, immune responses, thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium is chemically similar to sulfur, hence taken up inside the plants via sulfur transporters present inside root plasma membrane, metabolized via sulfur assimilatory pathway, and volatilized into atmosphere. Selenium induced oxidative stress, distorted protein structure and function, are the main causes of Se toxicity in plants at high doses. Plants can play vital role in overcoming Se deficiency and Se toxicity in different regions of the world, hence, detailed mechanism of Se metabolism inside the plants is necessary for designing effective Se phytoremediation and biofortification strategies. The present study was planned to delineate the role of antioxidants and different functional groups ofRicinus communisandBrassica junceain the tolerance mechanisms toward cadmium (Cd) for phytoremediation. Application of Cd caused a reduction in dry biomass of 53.84% and 26.58% in root and 45.33% and 33.84% in shoots ofB. junceaandR. communis, respectively. Antioxidant enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione-S-transferase, and metabolites (proline) increased in both the species due to Cd exposure. The metal caused substantial changes in the functional groups present in the roots and leaves of the plants. A number of new peaks appeared in the Cd-treated plants, which indicate the production of the compounds responsible for the metal tolerance of these plants.R. communishas been found to possess a good antioxidant defense system against Cd stress and may be used for the phytoremediation of metal-contaminated soils in place of edible crops, which enhance the risk of contaminating the food chain. A field experiment was conducted in a combinatorial approach to evaluate the performance of five aquatic plants, singly and in all possible combinations of two plants, for As removal from 4 L of 2500 μg L −1 As in 30 days. Under As stress, Hydrilla showed an increase in growth rate (19%) in comparison to control, while other plants demonstrated a decline. Among different combinations, Ceratophyllum + Lemna , Hydrilla + Ceratophyllum and Hydrilla + Wolffia showed higher growth in As (92%, 43%, and 33%, respectively) than under control conditions. Total As removal (μg) in 30 days was found to be the maximum for Ceratophyllum + Lemna (4365) followed by Hydrilla + Ceratophyllum (3326) and Hydrilla + Wolffia (1896). In all combinations of plants, Hydrilla always contributed more than 50%. The study advocates the use of Hydrilla / Ceratophyllum as one plant of choice to be used in combination. The consequences of heavy metal contamination are progressively degrading soil quality in this modern period of industry. Due to this reason, improvement of the soil quality is necessary. Remediation is a method of removing pollutants from the root zone of plants in order to minimize stress and increase yield of plants grown in it. The use of plants to remove toxins from the soil, such as heavy metals, trace elements, organic chemicals, and radioactive substances, is referred to as bioremediation. Biochar and fly ash techniques are also studied for effectiveness in improving the quality of contaminated soil. This review compiles amelioration technologies and how they are used in the field. Abstract: The uranium (U) accumulation potential and ensuing biochemical responses were studied in Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle upon exposure to U (0, 20 and 100mgL−1). There was a concentration-duration dependent increase in U accumulation with the maximum being 78mgg−1 DW at 100mgL−1 U after 24h. Plants experienced an initial phase of the maximum toxicity (within 30min) followed by almost complete recovery after 24h. The recovery was attributed to an integrated modulation in the level of both enzymatic and molecular antioxidants (viz., guaiacol peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, proline, total phenolics) and also the constituents of thiol metabolism (viz., cysteine and glutathione). Thus, plants were found to be able to accumulate significant amount of U in a short time and to tolerate it efficiently. Hence, they may find application in U phytoremediation considering there accumulation ability, fast growth due to weed-like habit and world-wide distribution. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Arsenic contamination of the environment is a serious problem threatening the health of millions of people exposed to arsenic (As) via drinking water and crops grown in contaminated areas. The remediation of As-contaminated soil and water bodies needs to be sustainable, low-cost and feasible to apply in the most affected low-to-middle income countries, like India and Bangladesh. Phytoremediation is an aesthetically appreciable and successful approach that can be used for As decontamination with use of the best approach(es) and the most promising plant(s). However, phytoremediation lacks the required speed and sometimes the stress caused by As could diminish plants' potential for remediation. To tackle these demerits, we need augment plants' potential with appropriate technological methods including microbial and nanoparticles applications and genetic modification of plants to alleviate the As stress and enhance As accumulation in phytoremediator plants. The present review discusses the As phytoremediation prospects of soil and water bodies and the usefulness of various plant systems in terms of high biomass, high As accumulation, bioenergy potential, and economic utility. Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), imparts deficiency of soluble arsenic and other toxic metal (loid)s through rhizofiltration and phytoaccumulation. Without proper management strategy, this phytoremediation of metal (loid)s might fail and get reverted back to the environment, contaminating the nearby water bodies. This study, focused on bio-conversion of phytoremediating hyacinths, spiked with 100 times and greater arsenic, lead and cadmium concentrations than the average water contamination, ranging in 58.81 ± 0.394, 16.74 ± 0.367, 12.18 ± 0.153 mg Kg −1 arsenic, 18.95 ± 0.212, 9.53 ± 0.054, 6.83 ± 0.306 mg kg −1 lead and 2.79 ± 0.033, 1.39 ± 0.025, 0.92 ± 0.045 mg kg −1 cadmium, respectively in root, shoot and leaves, proving it's phytoaccumulation capacity. Next, these hyacinths has been used as a source of organic supplement for preparing vermicompost using Eisenia fetida following analysis of total metal content and sequential extraction. Control soil was having 134.69 ± 2.47 mg kg −1 arsenic in compare to 44.6 ± 0.91 mg kg −1 at premature stage of compost to 23.9 ± 1.55 mg kg −1 at mature compost indicating sustainable fate of phytoremediated vermicompost. This vermiremediation of arsenic and other toxic elements, restricted the bioavailability of soil pollutants. Furthermore, processed compost amended as organic fertilizer, growing chickpea, coriander, tomato and chilli plant, resulted in negligible metal(loid)s in treated samples, enhancing also plant's growth and production. The increasing industrialization and urbanization are also triggering environmental pollution, mostly unnoticed, in the case of soil pollution due to uncontrolled contamination by toxic elemental dispersion. The present study focused on this aspect and studied the clean-up of urban soil in a low-cost and eco-friendly way to restrict arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) contamination. Four potential ornamental plants, C atharanthus roseus (vinca) , Cosmos bipinnatus (cosmos) , Gomphrena globose (globosa) and Impatiens balsamina (balsamina) were used along with zero valent iron (ZVI) nanoparticles (Fe NPs) for remediation of the soil spiked with As (70 mg kg−1), Pb (600 mg kg−1) and Hg (15 mg kg−1) in a 60 d pot experiment. All plants were divided into four groups viz. control, spiked, spiked+20 mg kg−1 ZVI NP and spiked+50 mg kg−1 ZVI NP. FTIR and SEM were used for ZVI NP characterization. Soil and plant analyses and elemental assessments were done using ICP-MS, XRF and SEM. Among the four plants, cosmos showed the maximum accumulation of toxic elements (41.24 ± 0.022 mg kg−1 As, 139.15 ± 11.2 mg kg−1 Pb and 15.57 ± 0.27 mg kg−1 Hg) at 60 d. The application of ZVI NP at 20 mg kg−1 dosage was found to further augment plants' potential for metal(loid)s accumulation without negatively hampering their growth. Cosmos were observed to reduce soil As from 81.35 ± 1.34 mg kg−1 to 28.16 ± 1.38 mg kg−1 (65.38%), Pb from 1132.47 ± 4.66 to 516.09 ± 3.15 mg kg−1 (54.42%) and Hg from 17.35 ± 0.88 to 6.65 ± 0.4 mg kg−1 (61.67%) at 60 d in spiked + 20 mg kg−1 ZVI NP treatment. Balsamina was the most sensitive plant and showed the least metal(loid)s accumulation. In conclusion, three of these plants are potent enough to use together for a better and enhanced removal of toxic elements from the contaminated soil with cosmos to be the best amongst these in urban areas.
