Abstract

Friendship is a central focus in children's lives and is important for healthy development. During the Covid‐19 pandemic, children experienced restrictions on their interactions with friends. This research heard the voices of 10 children (7–11 years) in England regarding their friendships, drawing on data collected through creative participatory methods including drawings, photography and collages, and accompanying unstructured interviews. Findings provide new insights into how children endeavoured to maintain their friendships through virtual interactions, street/doorstep visits, and artwork, and how friendship disruption affected their well‐being. Abstract

When the UK Health Service rationalised its Warwickshire provision in 2006, two hospitals were decommissioned. This author was appointed, as Writer-in-Residence, to produce a book documenting the process. This is an ongoing project containing reports, articles, and interview transcripts, with new material being woven around existing material and spaces, and is entirely handwritten by the author. Many texts have unforced errors, and transcripts punctuation schemes reflecting pauses, hesitations, breaks and restarts. But readers can only guess timing (and other nuances of gestured meaning) from context. This is unreliable practice, because careful - yet insensitive - readers may feel that testimonies are undermined by these impositions of visual and syntactical order. This paper champions the value of this book, despite the putative instability of some of its texts. Its status as a work in progress, and its mixture of both random and controlled juxtapositions, should draw in and gratify active readers. There is also original prose and poetry in the book emerging as a result of the process, yet the subversion of the familiar forms of both the book and of documentation itself could mean that fiction is seen as more reliable than fact, prompting us to question our prejudices and expectations. 4. Unweaving the Rainbow: poetry teaching in the secondary school I.

Abstract

The Poetry Research Project 1998 continues work begun in 1982 which analysed the practice of secondary school teachers when teaching poetry and their attitudes towards it. Then some 170 teachers in a single Local Education Authority (LEA) completed a lengthy questionnaire and a number were interviewed. The information gained by this means highlighted both good practice and a number of problem areas which teachers encountered. Sixteen years after that first survey, and following considerable change in the teaching of English and of poetry as a result of such initiatives as the National Curriculum, the survey was repeated with a group of over one hundred teachers from the same LEA. This, the first of two papers, reports mainly on teachers' attitudes to poetry, particularly the reading, writing and discussion of poetry and upon their concerns. The second paper, to be published in the Oxford Review of Education, March 2000, considers the effects of the National Curriculum, of SATs and of changes in examinations at 16+. Abstract

This paper argues that recent changes to two national high-stakes tests for English -- the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) in Aoteaora New Zealand and the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) in England -- have shifted the assessment emphasis further away from poetry than previously and have significantly constrained the defined space for the genre within examination specifications at 16+. In investigating the impact of these assessment changes, the paper considers opportunities that sample groups of teachers and their students in two culturally diverse cities have to engage with poetry in examination level classrooms and the constraints they experience. The research aims to inform international debates about poetry's position in culturally diverse classroom contexts and the implications of this positioning for teachers' professional knowledge and poetry pedagogy, as they prepare their students for high-stakes examinations. 6. New Light on the Author of the Twenty-Four Poems in Oxford, Bodleian Library, Digby 102.

Abstract

The twenty-four poems preserved in MS Digby 102 are anonymous. Josef Kail, their first editor, in 1904 drew a profile of the author that has remained unchallenged for more than a century. Over the years, Kail's conclusions were copied virtually without comment in anthologies and incidental thematic publications on individual poems. In 2009 two new critical editions of the complete sequence appeared virtually simultaneously and wholly independently from each other. One is by Helen Barr, the other I wrote as my doctoral thesis (Verheij ). On the subject of the identity of the author of the Digby poems we reached very nearly identical conclusions, albeit along wholly different lines. In this paper, which draws extensively from my thesis, I propose to deal in some detail with only my line of argument, Helen Barr's conclusions of course receiving due recognition. I examine in close detail the poet's profile as drawn by Kail of 'a priest, most probably an abbot or a prior', who 'as such ... occupied a seat in parliament and voted with the Commons'. In succession, all possible parliamentary roles for the writer are considered and dismissed. Internal thematic indications combined with external evidence of certain historical occurrences then lead to an alternative profile of a poet who worked and lived in close proximity to the Westminster centre of political power. Official documents and photographs are forms of alienation yet they carry imprints of the inner life of their subjects. An identity paper and photograph of the 18 year-old Anna Freud serves as the basis for an investigation of various aspects of her identity at the time – firstly her position in England as an ‘alien enemy’; secondly her emotional and sexual predicament, brought to light primarily through her father's response to Ernest Jones's supposed advances; and finally her own sense of self as deduced from the expression in the portrait, backed up by the evidence of her poetry. 8. Transition, transformation and the art of losing: Some uses of poetry in hospice care for the terminally ill.

Abstract

What lessons for psychotherapy can be drawn from the enjoyment and sustenance we find in the use of literature? This paper looks back on a recent creative writing project undertaken with patients in a hospice day centre, and suggested reasons why the patients found this activity not only enjoyable but also therapeutic. Both the hospice as an institution and the poetic form are defined in terms of a transitional space. The article shows how the act of reading and writing poetry places a value for patients on not knowing at a time when the plain hard facts of terminal illness loom large. The author describes a practical way of engaging with poetry in this context, and uses clinical material to describe how the literary arts can provide a transformational object, and a point of inspiration, that may help patients to negotiate the changes brought about by their illness. "Megan Heffernan's book, Making the Miscellany: Poetry, Print, and the History of the Book in Early Modern England, challenges the traditional understanding of poetry compilations in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. Heffernan argues that these collections, often referred to as "miscellanies," were not disorganized but intentionally arranged by compilers to create connections between poems. She explores the organizational features of these compilations and their impact on the development of vernacular poetry. Through case studies of various compilations and literary works, Heffernan demonstrates the active role of compilers and their influence on poetic form. This paper reflects on the role of London as male Beloved in Whitney's 'Last Wyll and Testament'. Such a characterization of the city, the paper argues, has two consequences. First, it complicates and provides an important challenge to the ubiquitous personification of London as female in early modern England. A copy of the poem was in England by the second half of the tenth century, perhaps even earlier. In the single surviving copy from England, two incipits from a gospel lectionary were added in the margins near the time of writing, and they shed much light on how this poem was consulted and probably used for guidance on specific issues faced by a tenth-century English court. From its origin as a theological statement about the capabilities of vernacular languages in continuing Patristic traditions, the Heliand was later valued as a text that offered clarification on how to deal with hostile military and spiritual threats to Christian kingdoms. In Ibis, the relegated Ovid inveighs against an unknown enemy, laying curse after curse upon him via complex and riddlelike allusions. Although the poem has now itself been relegated to the understudied margins of Ovid's corpus, this was not always the case. On the contrary: it was known and studied both in medieval England and on the Continent. This article argues that Ibis was a tool of teaching: for medieval instructors, the poem's puzzles provided a course in classical culture with which to teach mythography. Beyond the schoolroom, Ibis formed a potential model for moral behavior in Guillaume de Deguileville's Le Pèlerinage de la Vie Humaine and John Lydgate's The Pilgrimage of the Life of Man. Here, we see the limits of the exilic Ovid's assimilation into medieval Christian culture. The manuscript certainly ranks among the most important in English literature, yet it is something of a bibliographic nightmare. Charles Mason, who discovered it early in the eighteenth century, described its leaves as membra and disjecta, a fact which Sidney Cockerell confirmed when the book was taken apart for photography by the Scolar Press. From this fact, the author surmised that Milton originally wrote on separate pieces of unbound paper, a procedure that would have perhaps simplified some of the textual problems inherent in the class="truncate-text"> A substantial amount of narrative verse has been written and published in England in the first two decades of the 21st century. Several writers, including Bernardine Evaristo, Ros Barber, Patience Agbabi, and Moniza Alvi, have written successful and well-received longer narrative poems. These poems fall into various categories: novel in poems, verse novel, and narrative collection. Five features of these texts are distinguished: the reworking of traditional and popular story materials; the predominant deployment of traditional narrative and narrational technique; accessible verse technique; an interest in past subjects and an attempt to render them available to a contemporary readership; and an adoption of non-narrative and lyric modes. Plotlands can be briefly defined as places where individuals have historically self‐built holiday houses. This 56‐acre strip of land with 319 chalets is on the Humber estuary and lies close to Cleethorpes, a seaside resort, and Grimsby, a seaport now facing post‐industrial decline. Our cross‐disciplinary collaborative practice between poetry and visual art explores open, environmentally aware engagements and methodologies with landscape and rural place. We investigate the relation of social, environmental and energy politics, looking out to land and sea and back to the community. Our results include original art and poetry presented innovatively together in exhibitions and books, in addition to local people's responses to our methodologies and the work itself. Background Reflective practice is a well-established method of learning in pre-registration nurse education although student nurses can find reflection a challenging process. Design An exploratory descriptive approach. Methods Data were extracted from unstructured interviews with students and educators (n = 12) from one university in the North-West region of England, United Kingdom (UK). Data were thematically analysed. Results Poetry writing supports a meaningful exploration of events, which have the potential to lead to changes in perspective. Careful planning of the poetry writing process is required, to ensure the potential of this approach is realised. Conclusion Poetry writing is an effective way to reflect on clinical practice. This work has relevance and transferability to a wide range of professional disciplines, where reflective practice is encouraged. UN Resolution A/RES/61/266 called upon Member States “to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world”. This resolution has particular relevance for minority language groups where mother tongue – so vital to self-expression – is primarily a spoken medium, often ascribed low status. With few fluent readers and writers, and a consequent dearth of written resources, a vicious circle develops and linguistic and cultural heritage erodes. Not all governments are vigilant with appropriate policies and funding. Even in a community like Shetland, where there is no class connotation associated with speaking Shetlandic, the proportion of fluent dialect speakers is now relatively small. It therefore falls to the writer to create resources for children, to help stem the tide. Engaging in translation can also help raise the status ofdialectand pinpoint the somewhat arbitrary distinction betweendialectandlanguage. There are many problems in publishing in minority tongues; for example, uneconomic print runs, language authenticity versus contemporaneity, standardisation of orthography and the trend to “exotic-ise” dialect in mainstream literature. To the percussive rattle of dead-carts trundling through the city's streets to collect those who had succumbed to the illness, citizens conducted their lives around an epidemic that would kill between 75,000 and 100,000 Londoners. In tandem with the onslaught of plague, an epidemic of printed material spread through London's streets, commenting on and contextualizing the outbreak. The Great Plague of London provided more opportunities to share information through print than any previous outbreak. In his poem Epiloimia Epe, or, the Anatomy of the Pestilence (1666), William Austin relates his story of the outbreak while interrogating two aspects of print culture: first, print's capacity to convey truth and humanity during the stressful event of plague and, secondly, the medium's meaning to a seventeenth-century English author. This article argues that Austin's apprehension over the print medium is felt in two distinct ways throughout his lengthy poem: in the conflict he expresses over writing specifically for print and in his exposé of nefarious printing ventures that flourished during the epidemic. In his effort to capture the plague within the confines of a book, Austin finds himself torn between the medium he uses to carry his message forward and its insufficiency to convey the complexity of a city in disorder during plague times. With its deliberate construction and artful rhetoric, the Memorandum seems to contradict the idea of autobiography as a truthful and honest account of individual experience. This essay poses the question whether consciously elaborate poetic composition, far from being inhibiting, could provide a secure framework for female authorial expression at a time when female writing was generally met with apprehension. The abundant tensions and ambiguities in the poem—for example, in Moulsworth's depiction of her marriages and relationships with her husbands, her remarks about the deaths of her children or her attitudes to female education—suggest that poetry could open up a space for feminine self-expression precisely because of the generic constraints it imposes and the intricate layers of meaning that it is able to accommodate. For an early modern female poet like Moulsworth, literary self-affirmation takes the form of a delicate balancing act that strives to combine acceptance and rejection of the demands of patriarchy, submission and small-scale agency, reticence and open expression. Particular attention is paid to the appearance of Grendel in modern popular culture. The study examines three works in the evolution of the character and characterization of Grendel, namely the poem "Beowulf," the 1971 novel "Grendel" by John Gardner and the comic book "Grendel" by Matt Wagner. It is noted that Grendel's continued allure and fascination is supported by his mystery and that he is consistently portrayed as a creature of action without reflection. Although their poetry refers to and draws on the imagery of African slavery, the major poetic figures of the Romantic Movement in England rarely spoke directly against the slave trade and colonial slavery. Thus the issue of slavery, the transatlantic trade, and Britain's role in it, though well established in the nineteenth-century historical context, remained a subject only partially explored by the English Romantic poets, who were, at the time, more preoccupied with British domestic policy and the enslavement of their own nation. It makes the case that the villain of Donne's poem, the poet-turned-lawyer Coscus, may be Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634) and that two female figures in the poem may be Queen Elizabeth (r. 1558-1603). Donne attacks Coke and Elizabeth for their complicity in deploying an antiquated and backward-looking feudal ideal in order to lend prestige to the common law, to enrich the crown and its officers, and to frustrate the dynastic prospects of landholding gentry. Also, that even dangerous mad people were considered potentially curable.
