Purpose: Narrative accounts of subjective consumer experience are, in one form or another, an essential of qualitative market research. Ethnographic research and ethnographic poetry have obvious connections with the literary form, yet this form has had limited application. Based on the assumption that poetry as a craft is a somewhat limited narrative in ethnographic studies and specifically in studies that attend a consumer vulnerability agenda, this paper aims to contribute to a literary-based perspective. This paper advocates for ethnographic poetry as a consideration of disseminating qualitative data for those researchers immersed in ethnographic research with diverse and vulnerable populations. Design/methodology/approach: The paper draws on a range of extant literature to draw out the distinguishing features of ethnographic poetry, in which to situate ethnographic narratives of two studies of consumer vulnerability. To assist in this, scholarly discussion in the paper is interposed with a series of interludes written in the ethnographic poetic style. These interludes are intended to epitomise merits of such an interpretive research approach. Findings: This is a research paper seeking to draw attention to, and develop a relatively neglected research approach, ethnographic poetry. Researcher reflections, drawn from two ethnographic studies, suggest some tangible consequences of this research to generate further discussion of consumer vulnerability. Research limitations/implications: The overall aim is to extend discussion of the particular qualities of ethnographic poetry that might contribute to better serve qualitative research approaches, when conducting ethnographic research. Practical implications: The paper advocates a stronger focus on ethnographic poetry to liberate the imagination of researchers and readers alike to enrich and compliment the analysis of narrative forms of qualitative data drawn from an ethnographic approach. Originality/value: This paper addresses the concept of ethnographic poetry, stemming from narrative-based qualitative research, which will be entirely new to many researchers and practitioners. Trainers played an immensely important role in ancient sports. Yet, they often disappear in the descriptions of great athletic feats in epinician poetry, the poems of praise that celebrated great athletes in the ancient world. This paper examines the manner in which trainers fade from epinician narrative and argues that their disappearance may have to do with the nature of the body and the role of trainers and physicians in the Greek world. Admitting the importance of trainers might challenge the notion that the greatness of athletes stemmed from birth and breeding. This paper provides an unexpected and extraordinary example of research data from a Photovoice project conducted with ex-prisoners in South Australia. It focusses on the contribution made by one of the participants who chose the pseudonym 'Deer'. Deer joins me as a co-author, her voice shines in this paper, albeit through a pseudonym she chose for the project. Photovoice, a qualitative research method, uses a feminist framework and typically produces rich thick accounts of lives and experiences that cannot be adequately captured by quantitative research. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of research data collection each have merits, but qualitative approaches tend to engage the researcher, participant and later the reader on a more personal level. Moreover, unexpected findings are more likely to arise when researchers ask participants to express what they believe is important to their experience. This paper offers a fresh perspective on the representation of the Muse(s) in Pindar. Two recent studies addressing this issue have argued for a clear distinction between the epinikia and the cult songs. This paper aims to reassess this approach and to offer a different perspective on the problem, focusing on the metaphors applied to the relationship with the Muse(s). While the image as drawn by Kantzios and Maslov emerges as simplistic, some of the metaphors can be linked to the given genre because they are based on analogies to the context of performance, which also enhance the cognitive effect of the poems. The paper attempts an analytical study of the poetics of Kamala Das through the specific prism of the feminist ideology. Das, with her novel spectrum of poetry, announced the arrival of a fresh and indomitable female voice on the Indian English literary scene. Debunking the artifice of patriarchy and its oppressive function, she set out to live her life on her own terms. Her writings speak volumes about her extremely free and courageous outlook on life. We barely meet any inhibitions or ambiguities in her. Her verse verily reflects what she felt, thought and actually lived out. She is India's answer to the American coterie of confessional poets as she limns a brutally honest portrait of her deeply felt angst, pain and bewilderment against the male-dominated superstructure in our society, in the most striking of confessional tones. A perusal of her ballistic verse opens floodgates to the understanding of the plight and predicament of the females' section entrenched against the particular backdrop of the stereotypical Indian set up. Her anger and exasperation become her panacea. Besides numerous positive transformations and unique opportunities in language pedagogy, the post-method era brought with itself several challenges for language teachers. After intensive research and empirical studies, the use of literature was welcomed in ELT classrooms. But the question arises as to what extent and in what ways does literature support language learning? In an attempt to answer these questions and fill this lacuna, the present paper highlights ways in which literature assist language teachers. Moreover, the paper presents resourceful strategies to frame exercises using poems for ELT classroom. Shakespeare's Sonnet 65 is used to illustrate some vital themes explored in this paper. In spite of the observed difficulty level of the sonnet and the layers of meaning it encapsulates, dynamic and engaging activities can be crafted out of this poem. This paper explores what light an examination of the poetry of witness to trauma can shed on the treatment of trauma victims. In particular it looks at how the cultural act of writing poetry can restore a sense of a third to traumatized people. The paper examines in detail: "Dedication" by Czeslaw Milosz. Two aspects of the author's approach to the subject emerge: (1) the author links the details of the trauma experience to details in the non-traumatized world, and (2) the author describes his own limitations and inadequacy as witnesses. A case example is offered of a couple where one partner suffered an extremely traumatic childhood is described. In the end, the therapist and the husband admit their helplessness in the face of the wife's trauma, and this provides a kind of healing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses a corpus of so-called carmina gratulatoria, or gratulatory poems, composed by 17th-century Hungarian peregrines in Hebrew. The paper argues that this understudied type of text offers a valuable resource for a wide range of fields due to the sociohistorical, cultural, and linguistic information the texts contain. England's ambassador in Madrid from 1620 to 1624 and from 1635 to 1638, Sir Walter Aston was a fluent speaker of Castilian and convert to Catholicism. His interest in Spanish literary culture, in circulation of poetry in manuscript, and in translation played a key role in his negotiation of the religious and political differences that affected him and his circle personally and divided the state he served. The Astons' ambivalent position made them valuable intermediaries and at the same time vulnerably peripheral. Alexander Samson identifies a key performance witnessed by Aston in Spain on the eve of the Spanish match that is linked with a sonnet found in Secretary of State Edward Conway's papers and with the later translation by Aston's secretary, Sir Richard Fanshawe, of Antonio Hurtado de Mendoza's play Querer por sólo querer. Set within the frame of World Literature, and dwelling on the multifaceted concept of networking, this paper aims to provide a temporal pattern concerning the transfer/import of postwar North American poetic trends within the Romanian poetry of the 1980s. By relating the aestheticized model of Romanian (neo)modernism to the more direct, biographical discourse of the Beat poetry, the influence of which emerged upfront in Romanian poetry starting from the late 1970s, as well to the Confessional model the paper explores overlapping temporalities within the two literary systems, whereby the paradigms of (neo)modernism and postmodernism, respectively, clashed, due to the homogenizing effect of the communist context. Along these lines, I outline the notion of diachrony in synchrony of the Romanian poetry of the early 1980s, when several poetic patterns pertaining to different stages of North American poetry exerted a simultaneous influence during a very short time interval. The attempts made by Romanian poets to synchronize with, or borrow from Anglo-American literature, also involved relaying certain attitudes, views, and values – both aesthetic and largely ideological – that were specific to the source culture. This paper is about poetry and pilgrimage in Tembilahan, Indragiri Hilir, where Abdurrahman Siddiq, a prominent alim who lived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, is buried. In addition to his treatises on theology, mysticism, and ethics, Abdurrahman Siddiq is also renowned for his contribution to Islamic literature in Sumatra. He is a famous Islamic scholar and is respected in Indragiri Hilir for his spiritual messages delivered in the form of sya'ir (poetry). Malay Muslims have preserved the saint's legacy through the act of pilgrimage and various cultural events and festivals. This paper argues that the recitation of Abdurrahman Siddiq's poems during the pilgrimage to Tembilahan and Islamic festivals shows how Malay Muslims honor their respected saint. This paper presents the study of the author's style of A.S. Pushkin based on the comparison of his poetic texts with the texts of contemporary poets. The purpose of this study is to determine the features of the author's style of A.S. Pushkin using machine learning methods. This paper describes the construction of several classifications based on different groups of features, as well as the classification based on a combined set of features from different groups. The quality of all constructed classifications is also analyzed; special attention is paid to the interpretation of the neural network solution and the identification of features of the author's style. In order to realize the effect of intelligent poetry style analysis, this paper applies the text classification algorithm to the poetry style analysis, combines the knowledge representation algorithm to perform text classification and recognition, improves the algorithm, and applies it to the poetry style analysis model. Moreover, this paper combines intelligent algorithms to construct a poetry style analysis system, constructs the system's functional modules, preprocesses the poetry documents in the corpus, and maps them to the vector space that can be directly processed by the computer. In addition, after constructing the system model, this paper verifies the poetry style analysis system based on the text classification algorithm through simulation experiments. From the research results, the effect of the poetry style analysis method based on the text classification algorithm proposed in this paper is very good, which meets the actual needs of poetry style analysis. In this paper, I attempt a bridge between linguistics, in particular text pragmatics, and school reading of literary texts. I propose a linguistic model of these peculiarities of the reading of literary texts, especially poetry, that have been called ‘aesthetic reading’, arguing that a linguistically founded basis is what is lacking for school engagement with (not only literary) texts. In the last years there has been extensive research on the linguisticsliterature interface; however, what is surprisingly still missing, is a consistent linguistic model of literary reading. In this paper, I propose such a model and show that ‘aesthetic reading’ involves a distinct reading strategy that can be captured in terms of text-world-models and the differentiation between coherence and text sense displaying. Consciously reading poetry amounts, linguistically seen, to a close reading (i) especially focusing marked expressions, i.e., deviations from phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and textpragmatic routines, (ii) maintaining of unsolved ambiguities and thus (iii) generating an array of ‘authorized inferences’ that can be productively used for a principled plurality of interpretations. I specify this proposal and illustrate it with two cases of marked pronominal reference, arguing that my proposal has some important implications that make it particularly suitable for school context. Though Rupert Brooke' "The Soldier" has often been interpreted, categorized or dismissed as a poem on idealized patriotism, its underlying nationalistic and colonialist/imperialist dimensions have not been duly treated alongside its patriotic dimension. Since the 1980s, there has been a resurgence of interest in such interrelated themes as patriotism, nationalism, and postcolonialism due to the engagement of some political, philosophical, and literary theorists with a wide range of conceptual and moral debates. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine Brooke' poem in greater detail and, consequently, to update the previous research on this poem in the light of these debates. The main thesis of the paper is that Brook' "The Soldier" is a multifaceted poem which has a variety of different features which can be interpreted on various levels, namely patriotism, nationalism, and colonialism/imperialism. This article is a comparative study of the critiques of developments in Shona and Swahili poetry that began in 1970s Tanzania and 1980s Zimbabwe, after the introduction of regular patterns in Shona poetry (late 1950s) and of free verse in Swahili literature (late 1960s). These verse forms became the object of heated debate about the nature of ‘tradition’ and of ‘colonial’ innovation among scholars, intellectuals and poets. These debates went beyond notions of stylistic canons; rather, they focused on identity, as closely connected with tradition and the need for decolonization. The problem recognized in this paper is that this criticism became prescriptive, implying the risk of limiting verbal-artistic expression in terms of style and content. This article shows a continuity between these different contexts in relation to critical opposition to stylistic innovation and freedom of (expressing) thought. By comparing the poetry and philosophy of the Tanzanian poet Euphrase Kezilahabi and Zimbabwean poet Chirikure Chirukure, this paper problematizes the terms of these debates and proposes an inductive and aesthetic approach to texts that avoids prescriptivism. Mathematical visual poetry is a poetic genre whereby metaphorical expressions are created using mathematical structures. Within the structure, the poetics are understood by the cross-mapping of numerous conceptual domains including visual, lexical, and mathematical. Here I focus on one particular mathematical visual poetic structure: what I call a Similar Triangles Poem or Proportional Poem. To illustrate the ideas discussed, I present “Pandemic Meditation,” a mathematical visual poem; in particular, I discuss how this mathematical poem uses the mechanisms of poetic metaphor in the context of the embodied mind. The intent of this paper is not to explain “Pandemic Meditation,” for explanations of poetry serve only to kill it. Instead, the intent here is to give the reader the tools to access similar triangles poems in general, and this expression in particular, and to show how it functions within the definitions of poetic metaphor. This paper hopes to argue that the representations of and engagements with landscape by poets writing in English in Northeast India are embedded within the larger cultural and political contexts of the region. Indigenous communities across the world attach profound cultural, political, economic and spiritual significance to the territories they traditionally inhabit. It is for this reason that the preservation of their natural environment becomes crucial to the preservation of their cultural identities. Representations of the landscape by poets of Northeast India reflect the significance attached to and the intimate relationship shared with the natural environment by its diverse indigenous communities. The poets also display their awareness of the threats of ecological degradation faced by the region and the anxiety these threats have produced amongst the local population. In a personal paper about the author's animus, Watsky explores his fascination with Louise Glück, after attempting to solicit first her poetry for Jung Journal and then an interview about her voice in her poetry shortly after her death. He realized he had projected his anima onto a complete stranger known only through her writing. Suspicious of his motives, he proceeds to read her entire oeuvre during a two-week period, exploring their intersections and their divergences. Watsky then narrates a previous projection onto the writer Joanna Field who turned out to be the Freudian analyst Marion Milner. Romantic-period studies have been keenly sensitive to the notion of mobility across borders, both in literal and figurative terms, investigating it in relation to issues of personal and national identity. This essay discusses Byron's various forms of border-crossing with specific reference to his Italian years, starting with the most immediate loco-geographic meaning of the term, that is, Byron's traversing the many frontiers that marked the Italian territory, partitioned in a plurality of states. The focus is on Byron's experience of the technologies of control which were set into place in the early nineteenth century, testified by his traveling papers and registered, often with a touch of humor, in his correspondence. Byron's musings on the practices and implications of the documentary control of mobility and identity spilled over, in a more serious key, into the concerns of his poetic output, notably in the lines of his 1819 lyric "To the Po." Translating the notion of borders and border-crossing onto the page, here Byron resisted the crystallizing of identity at work in the biopolitical domain by making the fluidity of the history-laden river Po the locus of his rebirth as transnational subject. Although as a response to the New Cross and Grenfell Tower fires Jay Bernard's collection Surge (2019) engages with the themes of loss and mourning, no critical attempt has been made to approach this complex sequence of poems from the perspective of the poetic elegy. This paper argues that reading Surge as a neo-elegy sheds light on Bernard's intervention in current discourses on the grievability of Black lives in order to carry out their work of mournful protest. I intend to show the ways in which Surge endorses and enhances the ethico-political purpose and innovative expansiveness – regarding time, voice, and place – that characterize the contemporary Black elegy to address the past and ongoing struggles of the Black British community. Even if rooted in British postcolonial history, Bernard's project in Surge resonates with the concerns of the Black Lives Matter global movement and the body of Black elegiac poetry developing around it. Integrating literacy practices in science classrooms can help students read complex scientific text, write arguments as part of shared cross-disciplinary practices, and engage with content. In the Linking Science, Mathematics, and Literacy for All Learners program, middle school science, mathematics, ELA, and special education teachers have been implementing multimodal STEM text sets that include a range of texts and scaffolds that support instruction and students' content learning. One of these strategies combines reading and writing in unique and creative ways: poetry writing! Blackout and found poems are accessible approaches to help students focus on key words and ideas in a complex text, pull out those words to work with them, and then reconstruct them into a poem. This approach can be used in a variety of ways, and in some of the examples provided, students include an altered page from a scientific article on which they find their words, black out the rest of the text, and then illustrate the entire document to help show their message [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, an esthetic revolution awakened a new interest in traditional poetry, which was considered the depositary of the Volksgeist and the most faithful representation of the national character. This paper raises the possibility of using the concept of author function to prove the high coherence with which German Hispanism, and in particular Ferdinand Wolf, considered the people of Spain as the authorial subject of Spanish romances. To do so, I will review the increasing interest in folk poetry since the 1750s contextualizing it within the new processes of the creation of national identities and Europe's special attraction to the Spanish case. Secondly, I will connect this revival to both new esthetic sensibilities that revolutionized the concept of authorship, such as expressive theories, and the creation of a collective subject (das Volk) as the origin of romances. The counterfeit works of Rafael Bolívar Coronado (1884–1924) represent a phenomenon with unusual repercussions on critical reception. This author managed to publish more than twelve volumes with false authorship and content, from "crónicas de Indias" to collections of poetry. This article presents a theoretical approach regarding literary falsification in general and highlights the concepts of lightness and multiplicity to propose an interpretation of the Bolívar Coronado case. This paper also deals with the artistic dimension of literary forgeries as creative works that use the same methods and strategies as fiction writing. The set of falsified works by this author can be interpreted as a conceptual proposal that questions the functioning of the literary field of his time. Likewise, his proposal can also be framed within the cultural criticism that the forgery tradition entails: it questions not only the difficult discernment between the concepts of truth and lies, but also the rigidity of some guardians of cultural institutions and the system of legitimation, awards, and literary reviews. This paper offers a new reading of the Tithonus/Dawn couple in Sappho's Tithonus poem. It identifies three elements lurking beside the Tithonus/Dawn couple: eros, chronos , and gêras. It suggests that eros, chronos , and gêras haunt this heterosexual couple, altering the power dynamics between them, just like the third element looming beside the couple in the queer couple theory of Lee Edelman (2004) and Brilmyer et al. (2019). In Sappho's representation of Tithonus and Dawn, these three elements entangle themselves with the couple at different stages through integration, destabilization, and conjunction, thus establishing alternative models to the heterosexual couple norm. This paper uses visual network analysis (VNA) to do an exploratory data analysis of instapoetry, focusing on the use and co-occurrences of hashtags connected to Scandinavian instapoetry. The goal was to reveal and explore some of the networked patterns and processes connected to the production and distribution of instapoetry, by using digital methods. Through descriptive measurements of metadata of instapoetry and a visual network analysis, this paper has been able to identify characterizations of such patterns. Findings reveal that the Scandinavian instapoetry community is small and Norwegian dominant, with an established use of semantically close words related to poetry being used as tags to organize and make the poetry findable. In addition, the hashtags also reveal larger popular themes and topics. Reoccurring themes are emotions, interpersonal relations, and mental health. While they at one scale state something about the content of the poems, some of these tags bring instapoetry into other communities and interest spheres on Instagram, with prominent examples being interest spaces of specific mental illnesses, but also, by way of one high-visibility instapoet, into the interest sphere of nature photography and Norwegian tourism promotion. Author Henrika Ringbom's collection of poems entitled Händelser ur Nya Pressen 1968–1974. Prosadikter (2009) is a rare piece of Finland-Swedish literature. Rewriting news from a Finland-Swedish evening press paper during the 1960s and 1970s, it offers a view on the colonial mind-set of the Nordic countries. The poems not only depict political events from various parts of a global world, they also open up an unmarked category in Nordic literature, that of race and whiteness. An essential part of Finland-Swede's self-understanding goes back to its status as a minority. This applies even to Finland-Swedish literature. It also has a notable tradition of female feminist writing that runs through the 20th century. Finland-Swedish literature, however, belongs also to a majority when it comes to Western ideas of race and whiteness in a Nordic context. In my analysis, I show how Ringbom scrutinizes events from a phase Tobias Hübinette and Catrin Lundström (2014) call the "white solidarity" (1968–2001), characterized by antiracism, anti-apartheid, social justice and gender equality, but also of color-blindness. I show how Ringbom contributes to the current discussions of political Nordic literature with a rich, complex, ambivalent and defamiliarizing way. The poems actively remind us how both political events and political poetry are complex and contradictory. Rather than offering a clear-cut poetic activism, Rinbom writes political poetry of the second degree, one that examines and reflects upon the conditions of politics, popular media, and political poetry. The present paper examines how Cassandra Clare uses Edgar Allan Poe's work to create her own stories in The Dark Artifices saga. She published this trilogy between 2016 and 2018 and used three of Poe's poems as the main source of inspiration for each novel. The first one, Lady Midnight, is based on "Annabel Lee"; the second one, Lord of Shadows, draws from "Dreamland"; and the last one, Queen of Air and Darkness, has "The City in the Sea" as inspiration. Clare uses Poe's poetry both directly as chapter titles, indirectly in the plot, and, in the case of the second and third book, as an introduction to the novel. Furthermore, she uses gothic aesthetics and concepts to make a connection with the American writer. The analysis is approached from a theoretical framework based on Julie Sanders' Adaptation and Appropriation, and Genette's theory of transtextuality. It will analyze how this saga engages with Poe's ideas and aesthetic in this young-adult fantasy story in order to assess whether this new approach to the Gothic is an appropriation of Poe's work, and how it is achieved. Challenging critic Pramatha Chaudhuri's claim that Bengali women authors lacked a genuinely feminine voice, the writer Radharani Devi embarked on a literary experiment – adopting a nom de plume, "Aparajita Devi," she started writing poetry in a markedly "feminine" style about women's experience of everyday domestic life. Aparajita's language, buoyancy, and humor introduced a new esthetic into Bengali poetry. And her poems were wildly popular. This paper makes a two-fold examination: First, it demonstrates Aparajita Devi's originality by addressing how her narrators' vocalization of everyday worlds, delivered in ordinary language voicing common people and circumstances, blew a gust of fresh air over the serene, decorous landscape of Bengali women's literature. And second, it asks what makes her poems so compellingly feminine. While Aparajita was applauded for restoring the feminine to women's writing, did it come instinctively to women writers or was it a persona that any writer could adopt? This paper brings together two well-known poets from the Western and the Eastern worlds, T. S. Eliot and Mudhaffar al-Nawwab. Although they are not considered symbolist, they have used many symbols, each in his own context to serve their aims. Both are concerned with the issues of their age and have found water symbolism an exemplary way to convey their mode of commentary on the distress of their age and nations. For this purpose Eliot's "The Waste Land" discussed with special focus on the employment of water symbols, while "A Reading of the Notebook of Rain" is chosen from one of al-Nawwab's long poems to elucidate the use of such symbols. Synesthesia, among other rhetorical devices, has played a prominent role in conveying the intended messages in the realm of poetry. Nonetheless, it has not grabbed adequate attention to its nature and function. Belonging to the domain of comparative literature, this essay has benefitted from analogy studies as its methodology to render novel perspectives in the meaning and reading of the poetry of Sitwell and Ebtehaj. Here, we have attempted, firstly, to foreground the function of synesthesia and, secondly, to enrich the understanding of the mentioned poets. This paper concludes that the realization of synesthesia heavily and helpfully affects the perception of literary poems. In addition, to showcase such influence, a reasonable number of poems by Sitwell and Ebtehaj were subjected to scrutiny, indicating that a great deal of their poetry is best understood only after investigating synesthesia. My discussion of Davy intervenes in several critical debates about Romantic literature and science. First, I show that for Davy, 'literature' and science were neither inimical nor even merely analogous disciplines. Poetry was not simply related to scientific discourse because both expressed the enquirer's understanding of nature; it was formally related to experimental enquiry as a formulation on paper of the mental organization of the world-as-apprehended that is both akin to and a preparation for the mental organization of the world-as-apprehended that takes form as experimental design. Second, Davy's poetry, developing Coleridge's, constitutes a development of the prospect-view tradition in that it is as concerned with the mental process of prospecting as it is with the object viewed. In this respect, it is a modification of the materialist account of perception of the medical and scientific men who set the agenda of the Bristol circle in which both Coleridge and Davy first flourished – Erasmus Darwin and Darwin's main advocate, their mentor Thomas Beddoes.
