This study investigates the application of hyperspectral image space–spectral fusion technology in lithologic classification, using data from China's GF-5 and Europe's Sentinel-2A. The research focuses on the southern region of Tuanjie Peak in the Western Kunlun Range, comparing five space–spectral fusion methods: GSA, SFIM, CNMF, HySure, and NonRegSRNet. To comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of these fusion methods, the study conducts a comprehensive assessment from three aspects: evaluation of fusion effects, lithologic classification experiments, and field validation. In the evaluation of fusion effects, the study uses an index analysis and comparison of spectral curves before and after fusion, concluding that the GSA fusion method performs the best. For lithologic classification, the Random Forest (RF) classification method is used, training with both area and point samples. The classification results from area sample training show significantly higher overall accuracy compared to point samples, aligning well with 1:50,000 scale geological maps. In field validation, the study employs on-site verification combined with microscopic identification and comparison of images with actual spectral fusion, finding that the classification results for the five lithologies are essentially consistent with field validation results. The "GSA+RF" method combination established in this paper, based on data from GF-5 and Sentinel-2A satellites, can provide technical support for lithological classification in similar high-altitude regions. Northeast China plays a pivotal role in producing commodity grains. The precipitation and temperature distribution during the growth season is impacted by geographical and climate factors, rendering the region vulnerable to drought. However, relying on a single index does not reflect the severity and extent of drought in different regions. This research utilised the random forest (RF) model for screening remote sensing indices. Relative soil moisture (RSM) was employed to compare seven commonly used indices: the temperature vegetation dryness index (TVDI), vegetation supply water index (VSWI), vegetation condition index (VCI), temperature condition index (TCI), vegetation health index (VHI), multi-band drought index (MBDI), and normalised difference drought index (NDDI). The effectiveness of these indices for monitoring drought during different developmental stages of spring maize was evaluated. Trend rates were employed to investigate the temporal changes in drought patterns of spring maize from 2003 to 2020, and the Sen + Mann–Kendall test was used to analyse spatial variations. The results showed the following: (1) The seven remote sensing indices could accurately track drought during critical growth stages with the TVDI demonstrating higher applicability than the other six indices. (2) The application periods of two TVDIs with different parameters differed for the drought monitoring of spring maize in different developmental periods. The consistency and accuracy of the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI)-based TVDI (TVDIN) were 5.77% and 34.62% higher than those of the enhanced vegetation index (EVI)-based TVDI (TVDIE), respectively, in the early stage. In contrast, the TVDIE exhibited 13.46% higher consistency than the TVDIN in the middle stage, and the accuracy was the same. During the later stage, the TVDIE showed significantly higher consistency and accuracy than the TVDIN with consistency increases of 9.61% and 38.64%, respectively. (3) The drought trend in northeast China increased from 2003 to 2020, exhibiting severe spring drought and a weakening of the drought in summer. The southern, southwestern, and northwestern parts of northeast China showed an upward drought trend; the drought-affected areas accounted for 37.91% of the study area. This paper identified the most suitable remote sensing indices for monitoring drought in different developmental stages of spring maize. The results provide a comprehensive understanding of the spatial–temporal patterns of drought during the past 18 years. The evaluation of satellite soil moisture is a big challenge owing to the large spatial mismatch between pixel-based satellite soil moisture products and point-based in situ measurements. Upscaling in situ measurements to obtain the "true value" of soil moisture content at the satellite grid/footprint scale can make up for the scale difference and improve the validation. Many existing upscaling methods have strict requirements regarding the spatial distribution and quantity of soil moisture sensors. However, in reality, soil-moisture-monitoring networks are commonly sparse with low sensor density, which increases the difficulty of obtaining accurate upscaled soil moisture data and limits the validation of satellite products. For this reason, this paper proposes a scheme to upscale in situ measurements using five machine learning methods along with Landsat 8 datasets and DEM data to validate the accuracy of a SMAP-enhanced passive soil moisture product for a sparse network on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The proposed scheme realizes the upscaling of in situ soil moisture data to the pixel scale (30 m × 30 m) and then to the coarse grid scale (9 km × 9 km) by using multi-source remote sensing data as the bridge of scale conversion. The long-time SMAP SM products since April 2015 on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau were validated based on upscaled soil moisture data. The results show that (1) random forest regression performs the best, and the upscaled soil moisture data reflect the region-average soil moisture conditions that can be used for evaluating SMAP data; (2) the SMAP product meets its scientific measurement requirements; and (3) the SMAP product generally underestimates the soil moisture in the study area. Mountain areas in China account for 69% of the total land area; however, it is still an urgent that we grasp the special ecological structure of mountain areas and maximize the resource advantages of mountain areas under the principle of maintaining a certain ecological level. In this paper, Landsat 5, Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2A images were used as data sources to monitor and analyze land development and ecological change in Gui 'an in 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2021, so as to explore ecological maintenance mechanisms. Firstly, random forest classification based on multi-source remote sensing data was used to classify land, and the five phases of land-use change were assessed using quantitative analysis, in order to analyze the mountain region's land-use-change characteristics at different stages of development. The results show that Gui 'an has the "two-stage", rapid-development, rapid-recovery mode. Each stage includes a development-and-expansion period and a construction-and-protection period. In the construction period, ecological recovery construction will be emphasized, and the change intensity and rate of the second stage are lower than that of the first stage. Secondly, using a remote sensing ecological index, vegetation coverage, and a landscape index, an ecological evaluation model of the study area was constructed to analyze changes in the ecological environment and its protection in the process of land development. The ecological maintenance status of the five stages was quantitatively monitored using the analysis methods of difference change and coefficient of variation. The results showed that in the first stage of land development and expansion, the landscape pattern and ecological quality fluctuated greatly, and the proportion of ecological quality of an excellent grade decreased by 28.46%. However, in the second stage, the change slowed down and remained unchanged, and gradually moved to the middle and upper level. The results show that there is a close relationship between ecological maintenance and the land development mode, and new mountain towns can maintain ecological quality and achieve sustainable development through a reasonable land development mode. At the end of this paper, the factors affecting the ecological maintenance capacity of Gui 'an are discussed, providing effective reference material and development models for the development of mountainous areas. The continuous transformation from biodiverse natural forests and mixed-use farms into monoculture rubber plantations may lead to a series of hazards, such as natural forest habitats fragmentation, biodiversity loss, as well as drought and water shortage. Therefore, understanding the spatial distribution of rubber plantations is crucial to regional ecological security and a sustainable economy. However, the spectral characteristics of rubber tree is easily mixed with other vegetation such as natural forests, tea plantations, orchards and shrubs, which brings difficulty and uncertainty to regional scale identification. In this paper, we proposed a classification method combines multi-source phenology characteristics and random forest algorithm. On the basis of optimization of input samples and features, phenological spectrum, brightness, greenness, wetness, fractional vegetation cover, topography and other features of rubber were extracted. Five classification schemes were constructed for comparison, and the one with the highest classification accuracy was used to identify the spatial pattern of rubber plantations in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020 in Xishuangbanna. The results show that: (1) the identification results are in consistent with field survey and rubber plantations area generally shows a first increasing and then decreasing trend; (2) the Overall Accuracy (OA) and Kappa coefficient of the proposed method are 90.0% and 0.86, respectively, with a Producer's Accuracy (PA) and User's Accuracy (UA) of 95.2% and 88.8%, respectively; (3) cross-validation was employed to analyze the accuracy evaluation indexes of the identification results: both PA and UA of the rubber plantations stay stable over 85%, with the minimum fluctuation and best stability of UA value. The OA value and Kappa coefficient were stable in the range of 0.88–0.90 and 0.84–0.86, respectively. The method proposed provides reliable results on spatial distribution of rubber, and is potentially transferable to other mountainous areas as a robust approach for rapid monitoring of rubber plantations. Forest logging detection is important for sustainable forest management. The traditional optical satellite images with visible and near-infrared bands showed the ability to identify intensive timber logging. However, less intensive logging is still difficult to detect with coarse spatial resolution such as Landsat or high spatial resolution in fewer spectral bands. Although more high-resolution remote sensing images containing richer spectral bands can be easily obtained nowadays, the questions of whether they facilitate the detection of logging patterns and which spectral bands are more effective in detecting logging patterns, especially in selective logging, remain unresolved. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the combinations of visible, near-infrared, red-edge, and short-wave infrared bands in detecting three different logging intensity patterns, including unlogged (control check, CK), selective logging (SL), and clear-cutting (CC), in north subtropical plantation forests with the random forest algorithm using Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery. This study aims to explore the recognition performance of different combinations of spectral bands (visual (VIS) and near-infrared bands (NIR), VIS, NIR combined with red-edge, VIS, NIR combined with short-wave infrared bands (SWIR), and full-spectrum bands combined with VIS, NIR, red edge and SWIR) and to determine the best spectral variables to be used for identifying logging patterns, especially in SL. The study was conducted in Taizishan in Hubei province, China. A total of 213 subcompartments of different logging patterns were collected and the random forest algorithm was used to classify logging patterns. The results showed that full-spectrum bands which contain the red-edge and short-wave infrared bands improve the ability of conventional optical satellites to monitor forest logging patterns and can achieve an overall accuracy of 85%, especially for SL which can achieve 79% and 64% for precision and recall accuracy, respectively. The red-edge band (698–713 nm, B5 in Sentinel-2), short-wave infrared band (2100–2280 nm, B12 in Sentinel-2), and associated vegetation indices (NBR, NDre2, and NDre1) enhance the sensitivity of the spectral information to logging patterns, especially for the SL pattern, and the precision and recall accuracy can improve by 10% and 6%, respectively. Meanwhile, both clear-cutting and unlogged patterns could be well-classified whether adding a red-edge or SWIR band or both in VIS and NIR bands; the best precision and recall accuracies for clear-cutting were enhanced to 97%, 95% and 81%, 91% for unlogged, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the optical images have the potential ability to detect logging patterns especially for the clear-cutting and unlogged patterns, and the selective logging detection accuracy can be improved by adding red-edge and short-wave infrared spectral bands. The mining industry production is an important pillar industry in China, while its extensive production activities have led to several ecological and environmental problems. Earth observation technology using high-resolution satellite imagery can help us efficiently obtain information on surface elements, surveying and monitoring various land occupation issues arising from open-pit mining production activities. Conventional pixel-based interpretation methods for high-resolution remote sensing images are restricted by "salt and pepper" noise caused by environmental factors, making it difficult to meet increasing requirements for monitoring accuracy. With the Jingxiang phosphorus mining area in Jingmen Hubei Province as the studied area, this paper uses a multi-scale segmentation algorithm to extract large-scale main characteristic information using a layered mask method based on the hierarchical structure of the image object. The remaining characteristic elements were classified and extracted in combination with the random forest model and characteristic factors to obtain land occupation information related mining industry production, which was compared with the results of the Classification and Regression Tree model. 23 characteristic factors in three aspects were selected, including spectral, geometric and texture characteristics. The methods employed in this study achieved 86% and 0.78 respectively in overall extraction accuracy analysis and the Kappa coefficient analysis, compared to 79% and 0.68 using the conventional method. Using remote sensing data to monitor large area drought is one of the important methods of drought monitoring at present. However, the traditional remote sensing drought monitoring methods mainly focus on monitoring single drought response factors such as soil moisture or vegetation status, and the research on comprehensive multi-factor drought monitoring is limited. In order to improve the ability to resist drought events, this paper takes Henan Province of China as an example, takes multi-source remote sensing data as data sources, considers various disaster-causing factors, adopts random forest method to model, and explores the method of regional remote sensing comprehensive drought monitoring using various remote sensing data sources. Compared with neural network, classification regression tree and linear regression, the performance of random forest is more stable and tolerant to noise and outliers. In order to provide a new method for comprehensive assessment of regional drought, a comprehensive drought monitoring model was established based on multi-source remote sensing data, which comprehensively considered the drought factors such as soil water stress, vegetation growth status and meteorological precipitation profit and loss in the process of drought occurrence and development. Ocean satellites provide accurate and precise data across various scales, making them a vital tool for investigating the association between global change and ocean processes. However, low-quality data creates unavoidable gaps in satellite data, diminishing its usefulness and continuity. These deficiencies can be resolved by implementing machine learning techniques as valuable tools. This paper details a new satellite data prediction tool titled "SatelliteFixer". The SatelliteFixer model, utilizing a custom-built random forest structure, can generate dependable data with enhanced temporal-spatial continuity. This model has demonstrated feasibility with diverse satellite data sources and light bands, and outperforms the basic machine learning approach. The juxtaposition of model data with in-situ cruise sampling results allows for widespread analysis of the movement and dispersion of suspended sediment. The above entails the inversion of long-term events and the observation of short-term events, which enables accurate seasonal analysis using continuous data without the influence of uneven data volume distribution and outliers, and is also the first-time satellite data has tracked the entire process of pulsed artificial flooding. Drought is an important factor that limits economic and social development due to its frequent occurrence and profound influence. Therefore, it is of great significance to make accurate predictions of drought for earlywarning and disaster alleviation. In this paper, SPEI-1was confirmed to classify drought grades in the Guanzhong Area, and the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), random forest (RF) and support vectormachine (SVM)modelwere established. Meteorological data and remote sensing datawere used to derive the predictionmodels. The results showed the following. (1) The SVM model performed the best when themodelswere developed using meteorological data, remote sensing data and a combination of meteorological and remote sensing data, but the model's corresponding kernel functions are different and include linear, polynomial and Gaussian radial basis kernel functions, respectively. (2) The RF model driven by the remote sensing data and the SVMmodel driven by the combinedmeteorological and remote sensing data were found to perform better than the model driven by the corresponding other data in the Guanzhong Area. It is difficult to accurately measure drought with the singlemeteorological data. Only by considering the combined factors can we more accurately monitor and predict drought. Due to the country's rapid economic growth, the problem of air pollution in China is becoming increasingly serious. In order to achieve a win-win situation for the environment and urban development, the government has issued many policies to strengthen environmental protection. PM2.5 is the primary particulate matter in air pollution, so an accurate estimation of PM2.5 distribution is of great significance. Although previous studies have attempted to retrieve PM2.5 using geostatistical or aerosol remote sensing retrieval methods, the current rough resolution and accuracy remain as limitations of such methods. This paper proposes a fine-grained spatiotemporal PM2.5 retrieval method that comprehensively considers various datasets, such as Landsat 8 satellite images, ground monitoring station data, and socio-economic data, to explore the applicability of different machine learning algorithms in PM2.5 retrieval. Six typical algorithms were used to train the multi-dimensional elements in a series of experiments. The characteristics of retrieval accuracy in different scenarios were clarified mainly according to the validation index, R2. The random forest algorithm was shown to have the best numerical and PM2.5-based air-quality-category accuracy, with a cross-validated R2 of 0.86 and a category retrieval accuracy of 0.83, while both maintained excellent retrieval accuracy and achieved a high spatiotemporal resolution. Based on this retrieval model, we evaluated the PM2.5 distribution characteristics and hourly variation in the sample area, as well as the functions of different input variables in the model. The PM2.5 retrieval method proposed in this paper provides a new model for fine-grained PM2.5 concentration estimation to determine the distribution laws of air pollutants and thereby specify more effective measures to realize the high-quality development of the city. In order to meet the objective demand for rapid, accurate, and efficient acquisition and monitoring of soil salinization. This paper collected 61 soil samples from the Kenli District (experimental area) and extracted vegetation and salinity indicators from the Landsat image to construct the salinity inversion model by random forest algorithm. Then, taking the Yellow River Delta as the study area, the conversion coefficient of spectral indicators between Landsat and MODIS images was constructed in the form of the ratio of the mean value. Through optimization, the upscaling conversion method based on land use regionalization was proposed to realize the upscaling inversion and dynamic monitoring of soil salinization. The results showed that: (1) The random forest model based on NDVI , RVI , EVI , SI3 , and SI5 can better predict the soil salinity in the experimental area, with R2 = 0.821 and RMSE = 2.811 (validation accuracy). (2) The upscaling conversion method based on land use regionalization can effectively reduce the statistical error and collinearity of spectral indicators constructed by MODIS images and improve their correlation with OLI data and soil salinity. (3) From coastal to inland, soil salinization gradually decreases in the Yellow River Delta. From 2000 to 2020, soil salinization increased first and then decreased, and the salinized soil accounted for 20.35%∼35.10%. This study used multi-source remote sensing data to realize the collaborative inversion at different scales, which was significant for the quantitative estimation of soil salinity, salinization control, and sustainable agricultural development in coastal plains. Precise vegetation maps of mountainous areas are of great significance to grasp the situation of an ecological environment and forest resources. In this paper, while multi-source geospatial data can generally be quickly obtained at present, to realize effective vegetation mapping in mountainous areas when samples are difficult to collect due to their perilous terrain and inaccessible deep forest, we propose a novel and intelligent method of sample collection for machine-learning (ML)-based vegetation mapping. First, we employ geo-objects (i.e., polygons) from topographic partitioning and constrained segmentation as basic mapping units and formalize the problem as a supervised classification process using ML algorithms. Second, a previously available vegetation map with rough-scale label information is overlaid on the geo-object-level polygons, and candidate geo-object-based samples can be identified when all the grids' labels of vegetation types within the geo-objects are the same. Third, various kinds of geo-object-level features are extracted according to high-spatial-resolution remote sensing (HSR-RS) images and multi-source geospatial data. Some unreliable geo-object-based samples are rejected in the candidate set by comparing their features and the rules based on local expert knowledge. Finally, based on these automatically collected samples, we train the model using a random forest (RF)-based algorithm and classify all the geo-objects with labels of vegetation types. A case experiment of Taibai Mountain in China shows that the methodology has the ability to achieve good vegetation mapping results with the rapid and convenient sample collection scheme. The map with a finer geographic distribution pattern of vegetation could clearly promote the vegetation resources investigation and monitoring of the study area; thus, the methodological framework is worth popularizing in the mapping areas such as mountainous regions where the field survey sampling is difficult to implement. The accurate and timely access to the spatial distribution information of crops is of great importance for agricultural production management. Although widely used, supervised classification mapping requires a large number of field samples, and is consequently costly in terms of time and money. In order to reduce the need for sample size, this paper proposes an unsupervised classification method based on principal components isometric binning (PCIB). In particular, principal component analysis (PCA) dimensionality reduction is applied to the classification features, followed by the division of the top k principal components into equidistant bins. Bins of the same category are subsequently merged as a class label. Multitemporal Gaofen 1 satellite (GF-1) remote sensing images were collected over the southwest of Hulin City and Luobei County of Hegang City, Heilongjiang Province, China in order to map crop types in 2016 and 2017. Our proposed method was compared with commonly used classifiers (random forest, K-means and Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Techniques Algorithm (ISODATA)). Results demonstrate PCIB and random forest to have the highest classification accuracies, reaching 82% in 2016 in the southwest of Hulin City. In Luobei County in 2016, the accuracies of PCIB and random forest were determined as 81% and 82%, respectively. It can be concluded that the overall accuracy of our proposed method meets the basic requirements of classification accuracy. Despite exhibiting a lower accuracy than that of random forest, PCIB does not require a large field sample size, thus making it more suitable for large-scale crop mapping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
