This review article provides an overview of various aspects of lunar exploration, including missions to the Moon, collection and analysis of lunar sample data in laboratories, and the processing and analysis of remote sensing data, particularly using radar techniques. Both remote sensing and in-situ methods are critical for advancing our understanding of the lunar surface and its properties. This review article focuses on the identification and quantification of water–ice deposits located in areas such as Permanently shadowed areas (PSRs) and the lunar poles (section " Lunar Poles and PSRs: A Special Environment "). These volatile resources have the potential to serve as valuable sources of fuel for future missions, making it crucial for the lunar community to determine their abundance and distribution. After thoroughly examining lunar samples using high-precision laboratory techniques, many preconceptions were dispelled which is highlighted in the section " Laboratory Investigation of Lunar samples ". But as in-situ observations are difficult to acquire, especially terrestrial bodies samples, remote sensing techniques allow the global understanding of the surface. The article specifically highlights the importance of understanding the electrical characteristics of the lunar surface and how radar inversion can provide valuable information in this regard. The " Conclusion " section of this review article serves as a key takeaway for readers, underscoring the critical role that both in-situ and remote sensing techniques play in advancing our understanding of the Moon. Imaging spectrometry is a powerful tool among remote sensing techniques to analyze the chemical compositions and physical properties of the lunar regolith. Recalibration of the classical method byLucey and co-workers with Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) data provides an opportunity to understand the FeO, TiO 2, and optical maturity distributions over the lunar nearside on a global scale. We estimated the chemical compositionsand optical maturity from the M3 spectral reflectance around the 1 µm region. The standard chemical compositions of the lunar landing sites were estimated based on origin optimization and data fitting. We obtained an optimized origin of (0.08, 1.18) for FeO and (0.07, 0.71) for TiO 2. The Spectrophotometric evaluations of Catharina and Cyrillus craters, located in the lunar nearside are categorized under the matured category. The estimation results reveal that the FeO wt % of the Catharina crater varies from 0.0002 to 19.62, and that of the Cyrillus crater varies from 0.0001 to 12.32. TiO 2 wt% of Catharina crater varies from 0.01 to 86.12, while Cyrillus Crater varies from 0.01 to 4.34. The optical maturity (OMAT) of the Catharina crater varies from 0.0001 to 0.19 to that of the Cyrillus Crater Varies from 0.01 to 0.17. The overall summary of the results points out that lunar regolith is a fabulous repository of FeO and TiO 2 and quantitatively this metal abundance may be more than the anticipated values. With the convenience and connectedness of the oceans in recent years, there has been an increase in naval traffic, which has prompted maritime surveillance to attract special attention due to its significant application in marine operations. Ships, because of their uneven and rugged design, appear as a brighter patch, which aids in their identification by the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), an active remote sensing technique. In this study, Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 datasets are used to detect vessels in the Gulf of Suez in order to examine the increasing maritime traffic induced by the Suez Canal blockage caused by the Ever Given ship becoming stranded in the canal on 23 March 2021 and being freed after 6 days on 29 March 2021. The usefulness of dual-pol spaceborne SAR datasets in ship detection is also determined. The analysis was performed within a time window spanning before, during, and after the blockage event. On the basis of the experimental results, Sentinel-1 images proved to be more effective compared to Sentinel-2 images for ship detection due to the all-weather capability of the Sentinel-1 dataset. To confirm the presence of water on the moon, many scientists of the world are making continuous efforts through remote sensing data of different missions. In this direction, the Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (DFSAR) sensor of the Chandrayaan-2 mission adds a very important chapter which is the world's first Planetary SAR mission of fully polarimetric capability with L- and S-band. This study utilizes the L-band fully polarimetric DFSAR data of Chandrayaan-2 mission for the PolSAR parameters-based analysis and ice detection in permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) of the lunar South Polar craters. The PSR IDs SP_875930_3125710, SP_837670_3387710, and SP_874930_3578760 of the lunar South Pole were selected for the polarimetric analysis using DFSAR L-band. Based on previous studies ((Li et al., 2018), two out of three PSR Ids (SP_875930_3125710 and SP_874930_3578760) were easy to identify for surface ice. That is why only two PSR IDs were used for polarimetric SAR analysis of DFSAR data for surface ice characterization and detection. The hybrid polarimetric simulation was also performed to the fully polarimetric L-band data to study stokes vectors and associated child parameters for the selected study area. The analysis of polarimetric distortions confirms the persistence of the polarimetric quality of the SAR data and for this, the polarimetric distortion analysis was performed with co-pol and cross-pol channels. Wave dichotomy-based Huynen decomposition and Barnes decomposition models were implemented to the fully polarimetric quad-pol DFSAR data. The eigenvalue-eigenvector-based decomposition model was also implemented to characterize the scattering behavior of the PSRs. A high correlation was obtained between Circular Polarization Ratio (CPR), entropy, and alpha for the 200 hundred points randomly collected from the image. Diversity index also showed a high positive correlation with CPR. The polarimetric quality of the data was evaluated with the scatterplot between the cross-polarimetric channels and it was observed that the L-band quad-pol data of DFSAR satisfies the criteria for PolSAR data of a monostatic SAR system. Analysis of the results obtained from the polarimetric SAR data indicated that the high volumetric scattering and CPR for the PSR ID SP_875930_3125710 may be due to ice clusters within the permanently shadowed region. Polarimetric analysis of the PSR (SP_874930_3578760) at Howarth Crater using L-band DFSAR data shows a low amount of volumetric scattering and a low CPR for most locations in the PSR. The different ranges of CPR and volume scattering for both craters indicate that polarimetric parameters and indices should be studied in conjunction with geomorphological parameters of the lunar surface, for unambiguous identification of surface ice clusters in the PSR. Urban area mapping is an important application of remote sensing which aims at both estimation and change in land cover under the urban area. A major challenge being faced while analyzing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) based remote sensing data is that there is a lot of similarity between highly vegetated urban areas and oriented urban targets with that of actual vegetation. This similarity between some urban areas and vegetation leads to misclassification of the urban area into forest cover. The present work is a precursor study for the dual-frequency L and S-band NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission and aims at minimizing the misclassification of such highly vegetated and oriented urban targets into vegetation class with the help of deep learning. In this study, three machine learning algorithms Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) have been implemented along with a deep learning model DeepLabv3+ for semantic segmentation of Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data. It is a general perception that a large dataset is required for the successful implementation of any deep learning model but in the field of SAR based remote sensing, a major issue is the unavailability of a large benchmark labeled dataset for the implementation of deep learning algorithms from scratch. In current work, it has been shown that a pre-trained deep learning model DeepLabv3+ outperforms the machine learning algorithms for land use and land cover (LULC) classification task even with a small dataset using transfer learning. The highest pixel accuracy of 87.78% and overall pixel accuracy of 85.65% have been achieved with DeepLabv3+ and Random Forest performs best among the machine learning algorithms with overall pixel accuracy of 77.91% while SVM and KNN trail with an overall accuracy of 77.01% and 76.47% respectively. The highest precision of 0.9228 is recorded for the urban class for semantic segmentation task with DeepLabv3+ while machine learning algorithms SVM and RF gave comparable results with a precision of 0.8977 and 0.8958 respectively. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing is a state-of-the-art tool for snow monitoring and snow parameters estimation. SAR remote sensing-based techniques, such as interferometric SAR (InSAR) and Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) have already proven useful in the estimation of geophysical parameters of snow. InSAR-based techniques utilize interferometric phase information from repeat-pass datasets for snow parameters retrieval. During the monitoring of snow, the large temporal gap between the repeat passes results in the temporal decorrelation in the snowpack, which leads to the loss of interferometric coherence. Hence, there is a need for a technique for snow parameters estimation, which can work with zero temporal baseline datasets. This study works on the development of a Polarimetric SAR Interferometry (PolInSAR) based modelling approach for snow-depth estimation using TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X datasets acquired in the pursuit monostatic mode (temporal baseline = 10 seconds). The study area of this work is the Manali region of Himachal Pradesh situated in the Beas basin. Multi-temporal analysis of the snow-depth variation is executed utilizing the two pursuit-monostatic TanDEM-X interferometric quad-pol dataset pairs of the dates 21 January 2015 and 22 January 2015. In this study, the PolInSAR-based Coherence Amplitude Inversion modelling approach is used for the snow-depth retrieval. The magnitude of the complex interferometric coherence is used during the modelling implementation. The snow extinction coefficient is estimated and used as an input during PolInSAR modelling. Further, a comparison of the calculated volume coherence magnitude and the observed volume coherence magnitude is done during model implementation for the snow-depth estimation. The snow depth is estimated at a resolution of 15 m × 15 m in range and azimuth directions respectively. The estimated snow depth for both the dates shows a precise correlation with the ground datasets. The rise in model retrieved snow-depth value from 0.84 m to 1.24 m is observed during the period. The retrieved results were validated using the ground data of snow depth from the Automatic weather station (AWS) of Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) installed in the Dhundi region of the study area for same dates. Forest plays an important role in carbon sequestration and biosphere-atmosphere interaction. Knowledge of forest biomass content helps in assessing its sustainability and thus mitigating climate change. The advancement in remote sensing technology provides the capability of estimating biomass at a large scale. Hybrid polarimetry has gained significant attention among other radar missions due to its fundamental advantages. In this article, the potential of hybrid polarimetric SAR is evaluated for the efficient forest aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation for Barkot Forest, Uttarakhand, India. Forest biomass is calculated by means of the extended water cloud model. Scattering parameters are derived using two widely used hybrid polarimetric decomposition techniques, m−δ and m–χ decompositions. Potential insight into the efficacy of these decomposition techniques toward biomass estimation is brought forth. The modeled AGB estimates were compared with fully polarimetric data-based estimated AGB. The estimation based on the m–χ and m−δ decomposition resulted in biomass estimation with an accuracy of 75.8% and 73.4%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to demonstrate the potential of space-borne datasets for forest height estimation over Indian tropical forests. Fully polarimetric space-borne SAR interferometry (PolInSAR) data is acquired at the L -, C-, and X-band frequencies. The X-band data are acquired in two modes—single pass and repeat pass. The datasets are compensated for decorrelation due to SNR and varying spatial baselines. The remaining major decorrelation is the volumetric decorrelation, which is modeled using random volume over ground model to estimate the PolInSAR height for all the three frequencies. The modified Three-stage inversion algorithm is utilized for forest stand height estimation. The effect of forest biomass on height inversion accuracy is assessed. Furthermore, a first-order estimate of the absolute temporal decorrelation is demonstrated for the repeat-pass space-borne PolInSAR datasets. Extensive field validation campaigns are carried out in the tropical forest ranges. The forest height is inverted using data at all the three frequencies and validated with field measured values. The zero-temporal baseline bistatic TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X and the L-band ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 result in a good height inversion with ${\boldsymbol{r}^2}$ and RMSE of 0.77 and 1.86 m (X-band) and 0.75 and 1.94 m (L -band), respectively. Furthermore, a comparison of estimated height of ALOS-2/PALSAR-2, TerraSAR-X, and RadarSAT-2 has been done with respect to the estimated height of TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X. It is observed that RMSE of height inversion with respect to TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X height is found to be 5.4 m, 7.6 m, and 12.8 m for ALOS-2/PALSAR-2, RadarSAT-2, and TerraSAR-X, respectively. Deep learning-based frameworks have not been much explored to incorporate the temporal dimension of the remote sensing data. In this research work, deep learning-based models have been developed which exploit the spectral-temporal domain of bi-sensor remote sensing data obtained from Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 satellites. Application of proposed deep learning frameworks has been tested for mapping transplanted paddy fields using Class Based Sensor Independent - Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (CBSI-NDVI) spectral reduction approach. Two deep learning-based models viz., one-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1-D CNN) and hybrid 1-D Convolutional Neural Network – Long Short Term Memory (CNN-LSTM) consisting of 1-D CNN and LSTM layers respectively were developed. For both of the models the optimized model hyper-parameters were also deduced. Though the performance of both the models were above satisfactory level still the 1-D CNN model performed slightly better than the hybrid 1-D CNN-LSTM based model with average overall accuracies of 93.75% and 91.25% respectively. The average F-measure values were computed as 0.93 and 0.90 respectively for the 1-D CNN based and hybrid CNN-LSTM based models. The Moon has a large potential for space exploration and mining valuable resources. In particular, 3He provides rich sources of non-radioactive fusion fuel to fulfill cislunar and Earth's energy demands, if found economically feasible. The present study focuses on developing advanced techniques to prospect 3He resources on the Moon from multi-sensor remote sensing perspectives. It characterizes optical changes in regolith materials due to space weathering as a new retention parameter and introduces a novel machine learning inversion model for retrieving the physical properties of the regolith. Our analysis suggests that the reddening of the soil predominantly governs the retention, along with attenuated mafic band depths. Moreover, semi-variograms show that the spatial variability of 3He is aligned with the episodic weathering events at different timescales. We also observed that pyroclastic regoliths with high dielectric constant and increased surface scattering mechanisms exhibited a 3He abundant region. For ejecta cover, the retention was weakly associated with the dielectric contrast and a circular polarization ratio (CPR), mainly because of the 3He-deficient nature of the regolith. Furthermore, cross-variograms revealed inherent cyclicity attributed to the sequential process of weathering effects. Our study provides new insights into the physical nature and near-surface alterations of lunar regoliths that influence the spatial distribution and retention of solar wind implanted 3He.
