The presenter's paradox is a phenomenon wherein adding low-value information alongside high-value information reduces the overall effectiveness of communication. This is because receivers tend to evaluate messages using an averaging, rather than additive, approach. In the context of journal submissions, the presenter's paradox arises when authors undermine their papers' value by adding extra components that fail to maintain the high standard established in the core of the paper. These additions might take the form of excessive control variables, supplementary analyses, hypotheses, words, tables, figures, or citations. Teaching students how to employ their personal voice has always presented a unique challenge to composition instructors. Although teaching students how to engage in scholarly dialogue lies at the heart of every composition program, many students remain unsure, intimidated, and even skeptical of this mode of communication. As a result, research papers often take the form of unsupported monologues in which citations are merely ornamental, lengthy summaries, or numerous information resources are cited without one voice serving as an arbitrator. Library instructors face the same dilemma as composition instructors do when teaching students how to apply information to their research. Beyond teaching students how to identify an information need and to effectively and efficiently access and critically evaluate information, library instructors must teach students how information and personal voice are incorporated into research. In doing so, library instruction corrects the common misunderstanding that research equates to integrating resources into a prewritten paper, that any opinionated resource is acceptable to use, that the research process is similar to writing book reports, and that mediation between scholarly voices is unnecessary. By learning about personal voice in library instructional sessions, students begin to develop their own scholarly identity, understand the conversation of scholarship, and realize the function that their personal voice serves, as well as the strength and integrity that the research process lends to it. Several network features and information retrieval methods have been proposed to elucidate the structure of citation networks and to detect important nodes. However, it is difficult to retrieve information related to trends in an academic field and to detect cutting-edge areas from the citation network. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that detects the trend as the growth direction of a citation network using network representation learning(NRL). We presume that the linear growth of citation network in latent space obtained by NRL is the result of the iterative edge additional process of a citation network. On APS datasets and papers of some domains of the Web of Science, we confirm the existence of trends by observing that an academic field grows in a specific direction linearly in latent space. Next, we calculate each node's degree of trend-following as an indicator called the intrinsic publication year (IPY). As a result, there is a correlation between the indicator and the number of future citations. Furthermore, a word frequently used in the abstracts of cutting-edge papers (high-IPY paper) is likely to be used often in future publications. The Harbingers project, which studied the working lives and scholarly communication behaviour of early career researchers (ECRs) over 6 years, found evidence of changing attitudes to questionable (grey) publishing. Thus, whilst predatory publishers have come to be treated with equanimity, as a problem easily dealt with, there was growing concern with the high volume of low-grade research being generated, some of which by 'grey' open access publishers for want of a better name (questionable and non-standard have also been used). With the recent announcement (2023) that the government of Malaysia (a Harbinger case country) is not providing Article Processing Charges (APCs) for articles published by MDPI, Frontiers and Hindawi on quality and cost grounds, we set out to see what lay behind this decision and whether other countries exhibited similar concerns. Information was obtained by asking Harbinger country leads, mostly embedded in research universities, from Australia, China, France, Israel, Malaysia, Poland, Spain, UK, and the US to conduct desk research to establish what is happening. It was found that countries, like ECRs, appear to have formed into two different camps, with China, Poland, France, and Spain joining Malaysia in the camp of those who felt concerned about these publishers and the UK, US, Israel, and Australia belonging to the camp of the unconcerned. Explanations for the split are furnished and whether the Malaysian position will prevail elsewhere is considered. Finally, in this paper, we have aired issues/concerns, rather than provided robust, systematic data. For a systematic study we shall have to wait for the fuller study we are hoping to conduct. After two-years of talking to around 170 early career science/social science researchers from China, France, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Spain, UK and US about their work life and scholarly communications during the pandemic, the Harbingers-2 project is in possession of a mountain of verbatim data. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the kinds of comments ECRs are raising, with a focus on those that provide a particular interesting and illuminating take on ECRs' experiences under difficult times. Comments, for instance, that might challenge the established order of things or that presage big changes down the line. The selection of comments presented here were made by the national interviewers shortly after the completion of the last of three rounds of interviews (two interviews in the case of Russia). The understandings, appreciations and suggestions thus raised by the ECRs are insightful and constructive, which is what we might have expected from this cohort who are very much at the forefront of the research enterprise and veritable research workhorses. Sixteen broad scholarly topics are represented by quotes/comments, with the main focus of the comments on a subset of these: research performance and assessment, scholarly communication transformations, networking and collaboration, social media and access to information/libraries, which suggests, perhaps, where the action, concerns and interest mainly lie. Around 170 early career researchers (ECRs) from 8 countries were interviewed about the whole range of their scholarly communication attitudes/behaviours during pandemic times and this paper analyses what they said about predatory journals in a wide range of scholarly communication contexts. Because of the delicacy of the topic there was just one question exclusively directed at predatory journals, which asked about policies rather than actions, which yielded nevertheless wide-ranging comments on the topic. ECRs also volunteered information on predatory journals in another half dozen questions, most notably including one on questionable research practices. The source of data was mainly the final interview of three undertaken, with some comparisons made to rounds one and two. Findings disclose the existence of a whole raft of formal and informal assessment policies/codes that direct ECRs to legitimate journals and away from predatory ones. Despite being junior, ECRs are very accultured to the criteria of what is considered as prestige and quality and believe predatory publishing is not even conceivable. They are far more concerned about low-quality research, preprints and borderline 'grey' journals. Western conceptualisation of journalism as a profession and an academic discipline fundamentally represents systemic challenges to how journalism could be theorised, researched, and practised in ways that address and reflect the specificities of non-Western contexts such as Africa. It is in this context that calls for recognition of locally relevant epistemologies of journalism have generated vigorous debates among journalists, journalism educators, and communication academics. The authors argue that, in a rapidly changing world that recognises diverse perspectives, communities, cultures, national differences, and various ways of doing things, journalism education and practice should no longer be viewed through the linear and dominant lens of Western theoretical and practical ways of knowing. The comparative analysis presented in this paper provides critical insights into new approaches to theoretical and methodological developments that inform the discipline, with the aim to inspire and encourage wider debate in international communication field across cultures. This paper proposes that the system of scholarly communication and publishing must be tailored to the new technological (Internet) and social (Open Access) realities. It addresses, in particular, the need to revise and adapt the mission of academic journals so that they meet the new needs of science and society. After two-years of repeat interviewing around 170 early career science/social science researchers from China, France, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Spain, UK and US about their work life and scholarly communications in pandemic-times, the Harbingers project is now in possession of a mountain of data on what constitutes a very important academic topic. The purpose of the paper is to share the early highlights of the data, with a focus on the main and lasting impacts of the pandemic. The data presented comes from the national interviewers, who had conducted 3 rounds of interviews with their 20 or so early career researchers (ECRs) over two years and, thus, knew them well. They were asked to provide an ‘aerial view’ by identifying the most important impacts they had detected while things were still fresh in their minds. The main findings are that: 1) ECRs, the research workhorses, have generally proved to be resilient and perseverant and some have prospered; 2) the pandemic has fast-tracked researchers to a virtual and remote scholarly world, with all the advantages and disadvantages that comes with it. The data, however, is nuanced, with significant differences occurring between countries, especially China and France. As scholarly communication becomes more multimodal in nature, research articles embrace semiotic resources in appended genres such as the graphical abstract (GA). As an established genre in Chemistry research articles, GAs visually remediate chemical processes or research niche. However, this genre still remains in a peripheral area of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses as ESP practitioners mainly focus on textual modes. With limited opportunities to compose GAs, students foster genre remediation skills that are limited to textual genres only, ignoring the potential of reading-to-design skills. Upon student composition and critical reflections on GAs, as well as qualitative and quantitative data collection from a survey and interview involving professors, young researchers (YRs) and students, this paper examines rhetorical functions as well as image and text relations, while throwing some light on skills and challenges involved when GA composition is intentionally embedded in an ESP course, and discusses ensuing pedagogical implications. • Switching from reading-to-write to reading-to-design skills. • Embedding critical visual literacy tasks and student remediation of RAs. • Visual remediation awareness through student agency and reflection. Background: The Pediatric Trauma Society (PTS) is a multidisciplinary organization, with scientific presentations at its annual meeting addressing trauma care from prehospital through rehabilitation. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the scholarly areas of focus of presentations at the annual meeting over the society's first 5 years and evaluate research dissemination. Methods: Data were collected on abstracts presented between 2014 and 2018, including titles, authors, and abstract classification. PubMed and Google Scholar searches identified abstracts that resulted in publications. Journal impact factors were identified. Results: Over 5 years, 491 of 635 (77.3%) abstracts were accepted. The number of submitted and accepted abstracts increased, but the acceptance rate was stable (range = 72.1%–81.2%, p = NS [nonsignificant]). The most frequently accepted categories included "Epidemiology," "Abdominal or Thoracic Trauma," and "Neurosurgery or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)," whereas "Trauma Nursing" and "Quality Improvement" were less common. Among the 2014–2016 abstracts, 55.4% of podium and 24.3% of poster presentations were published. Abstracts categorized as "Epidemiology," "Education & Injury Prevention," and "Neurosurgery or TBI" were commonly presented but uncommonly published. The median journal impact factor of publications was 2.1 and 2.0 for podium and poster presentations, respectively (ranging from 0.11 to 10.25). Bibliometrics Conferences Pediatric Research Scholarly activity Trauma SDC T Presentation of research findings as an abstract and the subsequent publication of the associated manuscript are necessary steps of the scientific research process (National Research Council, 2003). Without presentation and publication, methods cannot be disseminated, research findings cannot be validated, and patient care cannot be advanced. Bibliometrics, defined as the statistical analysis of written publications to determine research output and its impact, can serve as a marker of the quality of scientific output from an organization (Desai, Veras, & Gosain, 2018). The Pediatric Trauma Society (PTS) is a relatively young organization founded in 2011 after leaders in pediatric trauma sought to create a group dedicated to the prevention, advocacy, and data-guided care for injured children (PTS, 2011). In 2014, the PTS held its first annual conference in Chicago, IL. Since the first meeting, participation within the organization and at the annual meetings has substantially grown. In recognition of the high-level content presented at the annual meeting, the American College of Surgeon's Trauma Center Verification Program has included the PTS on the list of acceptable organizations in which trauma medical directors can seek membership and active participation to satisfy the requirement of national organization involvement (American College of Surgeons, 2019). The PTS is a multispecialty society, with membership that includes physicians, residents, nurses, advanced practice providers, students, prehospital providers, and other (such as psychologists, physical, occupational, respiratory therapists) specialists. Presentations at the annual meeting address pediatric trauma care over the entire continuum, from prehospital through rehabilitation, and include randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, clinical outcomes studies, and process or quality improvement studies. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to describe scholarly activity presented in the first 5 years of PTS annual meetings, identify topical areas of focus of presentations, and evaluate research dissemination of the findings of these presentations. METHODS: We obtained abstracts submitted for presentation to the PTS annual meetings from 2014 to 2018. Abstracts chosen for presentation were classified on the basis of whether they were podium or poster presentations. Author names and institutions were collected. Abstracts were grouped into one of 21 categories (as selected by authors at submission): basic or translational science, outcomes, clinical or surgical care, critical care, emergency medicine, education and prevention, epidemiology, innovation, guidelines, prehospital care, quality improvement, trauma nursing, trauma systems, rehab or psych or social work, firearms, abdominal or thoracic, vascular, thermal or burn, spine, neurosurgery or traumatic brain injury (TBI), and orthopedics. To best capture related publications, PubMed and Google Scholar searches were performed using abstract titles, key words, one or more of the authors, and author institutions. Only abstracts from 2014 to 2016 were included to allow a 2-year window for each abstract to be submitted as a manuscript and published. If a study had been published before the PTS annual meeting, it was not considered in the final count. After each publication was identified, the journal's impact factor for the year of publication was obtained using Journal Citation Reports. If an impact factor could not be found for a given year, the impact factor from the prior year was used. If a manuscript was not published in an indexed journal, the manuscript was still considered as a publication in the final count. Descriptive results are presented in frequencies (percentages) and medians (interquartile ranges) where appropriate. RESULTS: Over 5 years, 635 abstracts were submitted and 491 (77.3%) were accepted. Of those, most (69.7%) were podium presentations and the remaining (30.3%) were poster presentations (Table 1). Each PTS annual meeting had between 61 and 77 podium presentations over 4 days, but poster presentations increased from 11 in 2014 to 35 in 2018 (range = 11–44). Abstract submission increased from 98 (2014) to 149 (2018). Although the number of submitted and accepted abstracts has increased, the acceptance rate has remained stable (range = 72.1%–81.2%, p = NS [nonsignificant]; Figure 1). The number of abstract submissions to the Pediatric Trauma Society has steadily increased over time, whereas the acceptance rate for podium presentation has been relatively flat. "Epidemiology" was the most common abstract category (Table 2). This category was followed by "Abdominal or thoracic trauma" and then "Neurosurgery or TBI." The number of "Epidemiology" podium presentations stayed consistent each year (range = 7–13). The category with the most yearly variation was "Abdominal or thoracic trauma" (range = 3–14). Topical areas that were less represented included "Trauma nursing" and "Quality improvement." "Guidelines" and "Critical care" were the two categories with the lowest number of abstracts. Among the 342 podium presentations over the first 5 years, only 20 were focused on firearm-related trauma. The 2018 PTS annual meeting had a higher number of firearm-related presentations (n = 7; Figure 2). The most common categories in aggregate were Epidemiology, Abdominal or Thoracic Trauma, and Neurosurgery/TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). In any given year, one of these three categories was the most common for accepted podium presentations. Publication Outcomes: There was a noticeable lag time between presentation and publication of 1.4 and 1.8 years (see Supplemental Digital Content Figure 1, available at: http://links.lww.com/JTN/A35). Thus, only accepted abstracts from 2014 to 2016 were analyzed for publication metrics. During that time, 193 abstracts were presented at the podium. Among these abstracts, 107 have been published as full papers (55.4%). Among the 74 posters presented, 18 were published (24.3%). Overall, 46.8% of presented abstracts from 2014 to 2016 were published as manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. The Joseph J. Tepas Best Presentation Awards (established in 2016) recognize the best presentations at the annual PTS meeting by a physician and a nonphysician. Dr. Joseph Tepas has been memorialized as a model pediatric surgeon and researcher who built a pediatric surgery residency program dedicated to the expert care of injured and sick children. The publication outcomes associated with winners of the Tepas award are variable. For 2016, the abstracts presented by both Tepas award winners have been published as manuscripts, one in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (JTACS) and one in the Journal of Pediatrics. However, neither of the Tepas award-winning abstracts from 2017 has resulted in a published manuscript as of this manuscript's preparation. Publication Metrics: Published manuscripts presented on the podium had a median journal impact factor of 2.1 compared with a median impact factor of 2.0 for published manuscripts presented as a poster. The range of impact factors varied from 0.11 to 10.25 (see Supplemental Digital Content Figure 2, available at: http://links.lww.com/JTN/A36). The official journal for PTS is JTACS. A minority (28%) of accepted abstracts were published in JTACS, and the remainder (69.2%) were published in journals other than JTACS. Four (3.7%) were published in nonindexed journals. Among the 18 poster presentations, only one manuscript was published in JTACS. The remaining abstracts were published in non-JTACS (72.2%) and four (22.2%) in nonindexed journals. Most papers were published in surgical journals, followed by pediatric and emergency medicine journals. Only one of the nursing abstracts was found to be published and that was in the Journal of Trauma Nursing (JTN). Figure 3 compares rates of abstract acceptance versus rate of publication by topical categories. Those topics that were commonly presented but uncommonly published included "Epidemiology," "Education & Injury Prevention," and "Neurosurgery or TBI." We also found that projects in which a nurse or advanced practice provider was the first author were more often process or quality improvement projects and were less likely to result in publication. This could be because surgeons must publish to advance in their careers and gain professorship and other promotions, whereas nurses may not follow an academic career path. In addition, process and quality improvement projects can be difficult to publish unless they can demonstrate sustainability over time. Figure 3. DISCUSSION: This study analyzed the scholarly output of the PTS over its first 5 years. We found that the number of abstracts submitted to the annual meeting has grown over the years and that slightly more than half of abstracts presented as podium presentations are published. Approximately a quarter of those presented as posters are published. Podium presentations were more likely to result in publication than poster presentations. Most publications were found in low-impact factor journals and published outside of the society's official journal. We have demonstrated the relationship between acceptance and publication by topical areas. Abstracts from topics with low representation (such as trauma nursing and vascular trauma) and those commonly presented but uncommonly published (such as Epidemiology, Education & Injury Prevention) may be an area of opportunity for the PTS to focus and improve dissemination of results specifically. This type of analysis is relevant not only to the PTS but also to any professional society seeking to assess and improve its impact. To our knowledge, the PTS is the youngest society to undertake this type of bibliometric review, but other societies have undertaken reviews of their scholarly output (Greig et al., 2019). Our results show that fewer abstracts make it to publication from the PTS than older and more established pediatric surgical organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Surgery (AAP-SoS) and the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA). Seventy-two percent of abstracts from the AAP-SoS annual meetings were published from 2009 to 2013, and 68% from the APSA meetings from the same period (Greig et al., 2019). Mentorship in the publication process and continued encouragement of nonsurgeon involvement in the society may address limitations in the number of peer-reviewed publications and improve the impact of the scientific content of the PTS annual meeting. The etiology for abstracts not progressing to peer-reviewed publications is multifactorial. One prior study found that abstracts may not become published because the author did not have enough time to write a manuscript or because a study was still ongoing (Sprague et al., 2003). A certain proportion of research may not even be submitted for publication if the study yielded negative results. The scientific community should encourage the presentation and publication of negative study results because of their potential clinical impact (Ivanov et al., 2017). Among the 491 presented abstracts in this series, only four were related to basic science. The focus on clinical research rather than basic science research is consistent with other pediatric surgical associations. A review of the abstracts submitted at the annual meetings for the AAP-SoS and APSA showed similar findings in the paucity of basic science submissions (Greig et al., 2019). The category with the highest number of abstracts presented at the PTS was "Epidemiology." This is not surprising, as identifying epidemiological data and trends is critical to preventing and treating pediatric trauma. To increase publication rates and to disseminate more clinically applicable research, the PTS has employed numerous strategies. In 2018, the PTS implemented a formal Publications Committee that reviews manuscripts in advance of submission to JTACS, the official journal of the PTS. The Publications Committee aims to improve acceptance rates by suggesting revisions and edits prior to submission. Authors competing for the Tepas Award are now required to submit a manuscript for publication to JTACS, which will likely result in a higher publication rate for the award-winning manuscripts. To address the low representation of nursing-led studies or low publication rates for nurse-authored studies, the PTS has formed a partnership with the Society of Trauma Nursing (STN). This partnership aims to increase the publication of nurse-led projects, including process and quality improvement. The STN-affiliated journal is JTN, which aims to disseminate generalizable quality improvement initiatives (traumanurses.org/resources/stn-journal). Because these efforts are relatively new, it is too soon to determine the impact on publication metrics for the annual meeting. In addition, we have identified topical areas commonly presented at the meeting but infrequently result in publications. Ongoing efforts should focus on the dissemination of results from this group of abstracts. LIMITATIONS: This study has several limitations. Despite extensive searching, we may not have identified all published manuscripts, particularly in nonindexed journals. We also may have missed publications specifically found in other research databases, such as Scopus or EMBASE. In addition, we did not analyze the publication metrics for studies presented at the 2018 annual meeting because of the lag time between presentation and publication. The use of the journal impact factor as a quality metric may be misleading. Journal impact factors can represent the importance and visibility of a journal in a particular discipline but are subject to variability (Paulus, Cruz, & Krach, 2018) and do not necessarily indicate manuscript quality. Finally, we have used bibliometrics to describe and understand the impact of the scholarly works presented at the annual meeting. The true impact would be measured by improvements in patient care resulting from disseminating this work but is not readily quantifiable. This study identified the volume of presentations that progressed to publications but did not specifically identify barriers; future research should delve deeper into this, possibly by follow-up surveys with abstract presenters. CONCLUSION: The PTS is a relatively new society and has made tremendous strides in its first 5 years related to the publication of the scientific meeting content. Although the number of abstracts submitted to the annual meeting is increasing, a large percentage of the scholarly effort of PTS members presented at the annual meetings remains unpublished. The published work is mainly in surgical and low-impact factor journals. Focused efforts to increase publication of presented abstracts, including implementing a Publications Committee, requiring abstracts desiring to be considered for awards to submit a manuscript, and partnering with the STN, are in place. Efforts to identify pediatric trauma research barriers are needed to advance patient care and improve outcomes for vulnerable and injured children. Ongoing evaluation of the scholarly body of work presented at PTS annual meetings will be useful in developing society and its members. KEY POINTS: Much scholarly work remains unpublished. The PTS has partnered with the STN to increase publication of nursing-led studies. Periodic evaluation of the scholarly body of work is useful in the development of a society and its members. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the aptness of “information literacy”, conceptualized as a socially contextualized phenomenon, for analyses of interdisciplinary scholarly communication. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents a conceptual analysis. Two influential representatives of the social turn in the information literacy literature are taken as starting points: Annemaree Lloyd’s conceptualization of “information literacy practice”, and Jack Andersen’s conceptualization of information literacy as “genre knowledge”. Their positioning of information literacy as a socially contextualized phenomenon – by use of practice theories and rhetorical genre theory, respectively, – is analysed against an illustrative example of interdisciplinary scholarly communication. Findings – Conceptualizations by Lloyd and Andersen explain information literacy as socially contextualized in terms of stable norms and understandings shared in social communities. Their concepts have the potential of explaining changes and innovations in social practices including scholarly communication. If we combine genre-theoretical and practice-theoretical concepts – and accentuate the open-endedness of social practices and of genres – we can enhance the understanding of information literacy in settings of interdisciplinary scholarly communication where the actors involved lack shared conventions and assumptions. Originality/value – The paper suggests that the fluid features of social contexts should be accounted for in the information literacy literature. By combining genre-theoretical and practice-theoretical concepts in a novel way it offers such an account. Explores science and social science early career researchers' (ECRs) perceptions and experiences of peer review, seeking also to identify their views of any pandemic-associated changes that have taken place. Data are drawn from the Harbingers-2 project, which investigated the impact of the pandemic on scholarly communications. Peer review, one of the activities covered, is singled out as it proved to be the activity of greatest concern to ECRs. Findings are obtained from interviews, which covered around 167 ECRs from China, France, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Spain, UK and US, supplemented by an international survey that took the data out to a bigger and wider audience for confirmation and generalisation. Results obtained are enhanced by comparisons with pre-pandemic evidence yielded by Harbingers-1, the forerunner of the present study, and anchored in an extensive review of the literature. Main findings are: 1) most ECRs were experienced in peer review, both as reviewers and authors, but few had formal training; 2) half the ECRs had a lot or some reservations as to whether peer review vouches for the trustworthiness of research; 3) inadequate reviewers and slow processes were the main peer review associated problems; 4) there was a strong feeling that some kind of compensation, whether monetary or reputational, could help in dealing with these problems; 5) the pandemic impacted most on the speed of processing, with the majority of ECRs saying it had slowed the process; 6) nearly everyone thought that any pandemic-induced impacts would be temporary. This paper presents the results of a survey aimed at gauging the potential acceptance of a collaborative and Web 2.0 inspired scholarly communication sector. While this sector has seen the birth of a multitude of innovative initiatives, there is still little empirical evidence of the acceptance of such initiatives by researchers. We received 349 completed questionnaires from researchers of many different disciplines. The results of the survey show that there is a strong positive attitude towards Web 2.0 and open publishing approaches. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how the migration from the print world to the electronic environment has affected the motivations, attitudes and behaviours of researchers in scholarly communication. Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes the form of an investigation that is both quantitative and qualitative. The study was split into three phases: understand the issues affecting researchers (focus groups and interviews); an online survey of 6,344 researchers measuring attitudes and digging deeper into issues: telephone interviews to understand differences between different groups change. Differences in opinions were examined across discipline. Findings – While there has been some change in the behaviour of researchers, there has been little change in their motivations for publication. Researchers want other researchers' data but are less inclined to share their own. Researcher attitudes towards repositories are very mixed. Researchers highly value peer review. The pressure to over-publish at the expense of quality is exaggerated. Research limitations/implications – Further research is required to measure the impact on researcher motivations and attitudes of external pressures that were emerging at the time of this study. This includes the growing influence of funding bodies, the economic downturn and its impact on institutional budgets, as well as subsequent advances in the digital revolution. Practical implications – This research suggests that, while technology may have positively impacted the efficiency of scholarly communication, the drivers behind scholarly information exchange remain relatively unchanged. Moreover, changes to the scholarly information business model will only be successful if they continue to satisfy the underlying motivations and needs of researchers. The use of peer review within both the scholarly communication system and the UK's Research Assessment Exercise is reviewed. The common denominator is that of peer-reviewed academic journals, since peer review is used by referees to aid publication decisions and by RAE panel members to evaluate a department's research performance. We propose that since academic research is now subject to peer review at all stages of evaluation, it is becoming an accepted method of rewarding (by funding) research. The growth of electronic publications (both toll-access and open access) provides possibilities for changes to some of the process of peer review and RAE, but the fundamental model of peer review to reduce the number of poor quality publications will remain. The paper concludes that because of the many criticisms of peer review, it is unwise to base funding decisions on second level peer review of articles that have already undergone peer review. The cycle of scholarly communication is perpetuated by those who create, evaluate, disseminate, and consume research. This paper distinguishes that the stakeholders most directly involved in this process are researchers, academic publishers, and university libraries. Whereas researchers and libraries often submit and disseminate work for free, academic publishing companies monetize their product. In this instance, the product is research, and the clientele is university libraries, who are coerced into multiyear contracts with publishers, often costing in the upwards of millions, to tens of millions of dollars. With university library budgets squeezed thin, it could be advisable to seek alternative accessible sources, beyond that of the costly subscription journal. This exploratory study surveyed 110 academic professionals to investigate how these users engage with scholarly communication and use open access (OA) resources. The study found that though outcomes of commercialized academic publishing have disrupted the transfer of research, users are hesitant to rely solely upon OA sources, despite the perception that they are of equal value to traditional commercial sources. The author concludes that in order for research to be transferred fairly between all actors of scholarly communication, that both researchers and university libraries must strive to make OA resources commonplace. From the end of the Second World War to the 1990s, Albanian folklore from throughout the Yugoslav space was collected and studied in Kosovo. This opened the possibility of a contact and a collaboration with schools and trends developing in folklore studies among all the peoples of Yugoslavia and beyond. However, this was not the case with folklore studies developing over the border in Albania. Scholarly communication with Albania became possible during the 1990s, yet alongside this conversation there were circumstances that affected the physical existence of the Albanian people in Kosovo. This brought about a period of stagnation from the point of view of folklore studies. For scholars of folklore, as for the whole population at this time, the accent was on survival. Albanian folklore scholars in Kosovo only managed to publish a few learned journal issues a year, thanks to donations from the Albanian Diaspora in Europe. After the year 2000, the conditions and opportunities for the development in the study of Albanian folklore in Kosovo changed completely. This provided an opportunity not only to open out to other Albanians in the Balkans, but also to come to terms with trends and perspectives in folklore studies across Europe. In this encounter, the theoretical and conceptual legacy of folklore studies in Kosovo has also been faced with the shift in the boundaries of the discipline of folklore studies, as well as its interplay with social and cultural anthropology, as has been the case for many other peoples in Europe. In my paper I will try to present the historical background and circumstances of Albanians living in Kosovo, which influenced the research and publications of the Folklore Department at the Institute of Albanology in Prishtina, as the only institution for the academic treatment of Albanian folklore. Less usefully, their systems and economies are often co-opted and decontextualized in short-sighted attempts to "gamify" various aspects of learning or training. However, given that games are highly controlled, conditional, choice-and-consequence-based, problem-solving environments in which players are expected to interact with simulated settings and elements after agreeing to take on particular roles and subject positions, there are promising potential uses of these experiences in academic contexts that have not been fully considered. Motivated by the imperative to explore alternative modes and methods of scholarly research and communication, and guided by the values of open social scholarship practices, this paper reconsiders games not as things to study, but as instruments to study with. Given that games can function as simulations, models, arguments and creative collaboratories, game-based inquiry can be used as a potential method of post-secondary and post-graduate humanities research and scholarly communication. While these ideas have been explored in a preliminary way in relation to a number of different academic disciplines (Donchin 1995; Boot 2015; Mitgutsch and Weise 2011; Westecott 2011) this paper is meant to catalyse a humanities-calibrated consideration of the pragmatics and potentials of game-based research, games as instances of critical making and scholarly communication, and more complex forms of game-based learning than those currently practiced. This paper presents a brief overview of open interface options and use cases for Crossref metadata. The collective effect of the community's use of metadata on content discoverability—and the need for richer metadata to support research communications—are presented in the context of a greater focus on non-bibliographic metadata. An increase in metadata querying and the core operating principle of transparency are discussed as aligned factors in making open, high-quality metadata a strategic priority for Crossref. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to understand the needs of humanists with respect to information and communication technology (ICT) in order to prescribe the design of an e-humanist's workbench. Design/methodology/approach -- A web-based survey comprising over 60 questions gathered the following data from 169 humanists: profile of the humanist, use of ICT in teaching, e-texts, text analysis tools, access to and use of primary and secondary sources, and use of collaboration and communication tools. Findings -- Humanists conduct varied forms of research and use multiple techniques. They rely on the availability of inexpensive, quality-controlled e-texts for their research. The existence of primary sources in digital form influences the type of research conducted. They are unaware of existing tools for conducting text analyses, but expressed a need for better tools. Search engines have replaced the library catalogue as the key access tool for sources. Research continues to be solitary with little collaboration among scholars. Research limitations/implications -- The results are based on a self-selected sample of humanists who responded to a web-based survey. Future research needs to examine the work of the scholar at a more detailed level, preferably through observation and/or interviewing. Practical implications -- The findings support a five-part framework that could serve as the basis for the design of an e-humanist's workbench. Originality/value -- The paper examines the needs of the humanist, founded on an integration of information science research and humanities computing for a more comprehensive understanding of the humanist at work. This article looks positively at how AI can enhance communication and academic skills, including teaching and research. The article explains what AI, Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), and chat-GPT are and highlights a few AI-based tools that are currently in use to improve communication and academic skills. It also mentions potential AI problems, such as a lack of personalization, societal biases, and privacy concerns. Despite millions of dollars being spent on research each year in Canada, little attention is paid to the dissemination of the results of research. There is a disconnect between Canadian public policies in this area; although a high priority is assigned to the generation of research, there is a lack of policies addressing its dissemination. Meanwhile, the environment in which research knowledge is being disseminated is undergoing a profound transformation because of several important drivers. In particular, these drivers include new technology, changing research patterns, new users, economics, and commercialization. The major objective of this study was to examine the rapidly transforming environment in which research knowledge is disseminated and determine whether there is a need for a national research strategy to adapt to the new, dynamic scholarly communication environment in Canada. To address the latter question, the study adopted a consensus panel process. A consensus panel of 10 Canadian academic researchers from across Canada from a variety of disciplines and at different stages of their careers was recruited from over 70 volunteers. The objective of the panel was to reach a consensus on priorities for research into scholarly communication in Canada. The consensus panel identified five major themes in which there is a need for research in scholarly communication in Canada: Knowledge systems; knowledge/data storage and retrieval; power and infrastructure within the academy; knowledge production and the social contract; copyright and intellectual property. These themes are expanded upon in more detail in the full paper and specific research topics discussed. The results of this study also clearly support the creation of a more holistic and integrated knowledge ecosystem for scholarly communication. The purpose of the study was to examine the status of Africa in the open access environment as well as the challenges of providing global visibility to African research outputs. A descriptive bibliometric approach was adopted for the study. Data was extracted from two world repository directories (Registry of Open Access Repositories - ROAR and Directory of Open Access Repositories - DOAR) and Directory of Open Access Journals - DOAJ to determine the presence of Africa and size of repositories and records found in the directories. Findings reveal that only 20 African countries have presence in ROAR and DOAJ, but 22 countries have presence in DOAR. South Afiica has more repositories in ROAR and DOAR while Egypt has over 70% of African contributions to DOAJ. The subject coverage of the repositories indicates that there are more publications in the sciences than there are in the social sciences and humanities; the preferred languages of publication in the directories are English, German and French. Though there is slow adoption of publishing in open access journals in Africa, there has been an increase in the number of open access journal articles from 2,019 in 2005 to 24,997 in 2014. The present study explores the motives, activities and benefit researcher seek or gain from joining ResearchGate academic social network. The result of the study indicates that ResearchGate is popular among research scholars in Pondicherry University. The motive of joining ResearchGate by scholar are many, however, majority of the scholars agrees that joining ResearchGate enable them to connect with people who have similar interests. Similarly, majority of the scholars stated that the main activity they involve themselves besides many activities in ResearchGate is reading articles and reviewing paper posted by others. Finally, ResearchGate has enhanced their ability to stay abreast with new/latest developments in their field of research. The study analyses contributions to Library and Information Science (LIS) by researchers representing various disciplines. How are such contributions associated with the choice of research topics and methodology? The study employs a quantitative content analysis of articles published in 31 scholarly LIS journals in 2015. Each article is seen as a contribution to LIS by the authors' disciplines, which are inferred from their affiliations. The unit of analysis is the article‐discipline pair. Of the contribution instances, the share of LIS is one third. Computer Science contributes one fifth and Business and Economics one sixth. The latter disciplines dominate the contributions in information retrieval, information seeking, and scientific communication indicating strong influences in LIS. Correspondence analysis reveals three clusters of research, one focusing on traditional LIS with contributions from LIS and Humanities and survey‐type research; another on information retrieval with contributions from Computer Science and experimental research; and the third on scientific communication with contributions from Natural Sciences and Medicine and citation analytic research. Background: The COVID-19 outbreak highlighted the importance of rapid access to research. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate research communication related to COVID-19, the level of openness of papers, and the main topics of research into this disease. Methods: Open access (OA) uptake (typologies, license use) and the topic evolution of publications were analyzed from the start of the pandemic (January 1, 2020) until the end of a year of widespread lockdown (March 1, 2021). Results: The sample included 95,605 publications; 94.1% were published in an OA form, 44% of which were published as Bronze OA. Among these OA publications, 42% do not have a license, which can limit the number of citations and thus the impact. Using a topic modeling approach, we found that articles in Hybrid and Green OA publications are more focused on patients and their effects, whereas the strategy to combat the pandemic adopted by different countries was the main topic of articles selecting publication via the Gold OA route. Conclusions: Although OA scientific production has increased, some weaknesses in OA practice, such as lack of licensing or under-researched topics, still hold back its effective use for further research. Like human cultures, research cultures are passed down from one generation of scholars to the next. The advent of predatory journals and conferences is damaging existing research cultures. Predatory publishers and conferences carry out a fake or incomplete peer review that allows low-quality, un-vetted research to become a part of the scholarly record. This article examines predatory publishers and conferences within the framework of the five functions of scholarly communication.
