Thermodynamic and liquid water profiles can be retrieved by a ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR) in nearly all weather conditions, which is useful for detecting mesoscale phenomena. This paper reviews the advances in remote sensing of atmospheric profiles and cloud properties by MWR in central China. Comparative studies indicate that MWR retrieval accuracy is different under various skies, especially those that decay under precipitation. The off-zenith method is proven to be capable of reducing the impact of precipitation and snow on MWR retrieval accuracy. Application studies demonstrate that MWR retrievals are helpful for early warning of rainstorms, hailstorms, and thunderstorms. Moreover, MWR retrievals provide a way to study cloud properties. The temporal variations of cloud occurrence frequency (COF) and liquid water path (LWP) are different for low, middle, and high clouds, and the vertical distribution of COF is also different in autumn and other seasons. Note that MWR can infer valid retrievals over the eastern Tibetan Plateau due to the weak precipitation over there. Also, cloud properties over the eastern Tibetan Plateau present differences from those over central China, and this is related to the different characteristics of atmospheric water vapor between these two regions. To bring more benefits for mechanism study and early warning of severe weather and numerical weather prediction, the decayed accuracy of MWR zenith retrievals under precipitation should be resolved. The Qiangtang Basin is one of the largest Mesozoic petroliferous basins in China that is still unexploited for the petroleum industry. The basic geological issues and synthesis of the Qiangtang Basin related to the Tethyan evolution are still poorly understood. This volume presents 20 research papers to address the tectonic settings, basin evolution, and sedimentary environments of the Qiangtang Basin, which are key factors for a better understanding of the overall petroleum system. The Qiangtang Basin holds a Precambrian base developed in response to the Paleo-Tethys Hol Xil-Jinshajiang Ocean evolution, with enhanced sedimentary basin infilling during the opening and expansion of the Neo-Tethys Bangong-Nujiang Ocean in the Mesozoic. The Paleozoic basin framework of the Qiangtang demised as the Paleo-Tethys Ocean closed at the latest Permian, while the Early-Middle Triassic foreland basin underwent a negative basin inversion during the Late Triassic. The latter initiated a new sedimentary filling cycle of the Qiangtang Basin, which was triggered by the active extensional rifting and the onset of the bimodal volcanic eruption. Recent scientific exploratory drilling (QK-1 well) found that the Qiangtang Basin is characterized by multiple source rocks, of which the upper Triassic Bagong Formation and the lower Quse Formation exhibit the most hydrocarbon generation potential. The development of high quality and quantity source rocks in the Qiangtang Basin is ensured by regional to global-scale bottom-water anoxia and high primary productivity in the eastern Tethys realm in the Late Triassic and the Early Jurassic. The main reservoirs in the Qiangtang Basin include the Middle Jurassic reef-beach facies, the Upper Triassic carbonates, and the Lower Jurassic terrestrial clastic rocks. Two very-thick caprocks of gypsum in the Lower Jurassic and gypsum mudstones in the Middle Jurassic strata are found during the scientific drilling, which is interpreted as favorable regional-scale seals for petroleum entrapment in the Qiangtang Basin. The Tibetan Plateau is located in southwestern China. It has many important ecological functions, such as biodiversity protection, and is an important grassland agroecosystem in China. With the development of modern agriculture and animal husbandry, antibiotics are widely used to treat humans and livestock, and antibiotics cannot be fully metabolised by both. Antibiotics eventually find their way into the environment, affecting other parts of grassland agroecosystems. Triticale (Triticosecale wittmack) is an artificial hybrid forage that can be used for both grain and forage. This study revealed the diversity of seedborne bacteria in triticale on the Tibetan Plateau and the resistance of the bacteria to nine antibiotics. It identified 37 representative strains and successfully obtained the spliced sequences of 36 strains of the bacteria, which were clustered into 5 phyla and 16 genera. Among them, 18 strains showed resistance to at least one of the 9 antibiotics, and the colony-forming unit (CFU) abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) accounted for 45.38% of the total samples. Finally, the bacterial motility and biofilm formation ability were measured, and their correlation with bacterial resistance was analysed. This paper examines the local and non-local climatic effects of wetter arid areas of Northwestern China (ANWC) in summer using a fully coupled climate model. In response to soil moisture increase, the local air temperature significantly decreases, and precipitation increases in summer. The wetter ANWC results in a warmer and rainless climate over the Central part of North China Plain (CNCP). While the influence of increasing soil moisture on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) precipitation is negligible due to the high altitude. A cooler climate over ANWC leads to an abnormal descending motion occurring. Meanwhile, an anomalous high pressure and an abnormal anticyclonic circulation occurs in 500 hPa over the west of ANWC. Correspondingly, a huge anomalous cyclone circulation occurs over the northeastern part of China and Mongolia, which can hinder the northward movement of the East Asian summer Monsoon (EASM) and reduce the water vapor transport into Central China Plain. As a result, the weakened EASM thus leads to rainless over CNCP. As soil moisture increases over ANWC is stronger, the magnitudes of the influence on the atmospheric field become larger. On the basis of NCEP/NCAR version I daily reanalysis data from 1971 to 2000 and by the methods of inverse calculation, correlation analysis and comparative analysis, the influences of atmospheric heat source (AHS) over the Tibetan Plateau on the large-scale AHS and the general circulation in summer are studied in this paper. The results show that AHS over the plateau in summer may trigger a heat source wavetrain propagating northeastward along the coast from the East Asian continent and West Pacific to Bering Strait-Arctic or even North Amend. In addition, if AHS over the eastern plateau is intense, South Asian High moves to southeast and West Pacific subtropical high moves to southwest; on the contrary, if AHS over the eastern plateau is weak, South Asian High moves to northwest and West Pacific subtropical high moves to northeast. Therefore, South Asian High and West Pacific sub tropical high move in the horizontally-opposite directions in terms of interannual variation, for which AHS over the e stern plateau seems to be thermodynamically responsible. This paper estimates lake level variations over two small and adjacent lakes in the Tibetan plateau (TP), namely Gemang Co and Zhangnai Co, as well as the inland Dianchi Lake in China using CryoSat-2 SARIn-mode and LRM 20-Hz waveforms over the period of 2011–2018. Different retrackers and a dedicated data editing procedure have been used to process CryoSat-2 data for determining the lake level time series. The lake level estimations are indirectly validated against those from Jason-2 in TP and from in situ data in Dianchi Lake, both showing good agreement with strong correlation coefficients >0.74. The results of this paper suggest that the official ICE retracker for LRM data and APD-PPT retracker for SARIn-mode waveforms are the most appropriate retrackers over Dianchi Lake and TP lakes, respectively. The trend estimates of the time series derived by both retrackers are 61.0 ± 10.8 mm/yr for Gemang Co and Zhangnai Co in TP, and 30.9 ± 64.9 mm/yr for Dianchi Lake, indicating that the lake levels over three lakes were continuously rising over the study period. The results of this study show that CryoSat-2 SARIn-mode data can be used for monitoring many small lakes that have not been measured by other altimetry missions in TP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geofluids from natural springs connect with the crust and/or mantle in many cases, and their geochemical anomalies could be significant for the study on faults activity and even earthquakes. Several natural springs are distributed along the Lenglongling fault zone (LLLFZ) in the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, where the M s 6.9 Menyuan earthquake occurred on January 8th, 2022. Based on chemical and isotopic compositions (δD, δ18O, δ13C, and 3He/4He) of water and gas samples, the origin of geofluids and their potential correlation with fault activity even including earthquakes are preliminarily assessed in this paper. The δ13C CO2 values and 3He/4He ratios showed that the gas originating from the crust was associated with the metamorphism of carbonate rocks, whereas the δ18O and δD values of water samples indicated that the natural springs were predominantly infiltrated with precipitations from local mountains ranging 3.7 - 5.5 km in height. Obvious changes of Ca2+ and HCO 3 − concentrations in SZK spring waters in the surface rupture zones were observed in a short period (about three months) after the main shock, in contrast to those of the GSK springs far from the surface rupture zones. Such variations might be correlated with the stress increase prior to the 2022 Menyuan M s 6.9 earthquake. The mechanical fracturing of surrounding limestone rocks during the slipping movement of LLLF could facilitate the water-rock interactions. Compared to three-month observations after the main shock, relatively higher concentrations of HCO 3 − and heavier δ18O H 2 O values of the LHG springs were also observed in the short-term period. The shallow stored formation water might be squeezed along the cracks and rose to the surface during earthquake tremors, causing a sandblasting water phenomenon. • Ionic concentration of spring water showed anomalies with Menyuan M S 6.9 earthquake. • Two distinct causes of hydro-chemical anomalies revealed. • Bubbling CO 2 originated mainly from metamorphic and weathering carbonate in the crust. This paper reviews progress in the study of Tibetan Plateau (TP) climate dynamics over the past decade. Several theoretical frameworks, including thermal adaptation and the TP sensible heat (SH) driving air-pump, have been developed to identify the mechanisms responsible for the circulation anomaly produced by thermal forcing of the TP. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the thermal effects of large-scale orography, including the Tibetan and Iranian Plateaus (TIP), are crucial for the formation of the East Asian and South Asian summer monsoons (SASM) because the surface SH of the TIP is the major driver of the water vapor transport required for the genesis of the north branch of the SASM.The large-scale orography of the TP affects the Asian climate through thermal forcing in spring and summer, and mechanical forcing in winter. The TP forcing can also influence the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) onset over the Bay of Bengal (BOB) by enhancing the BOB warm pool at the surface and by modulating the South Asian High (SAH) in the upper troposphere. On intra-seasonal timescales, the TP thermal forcing significantly modulates spring rainfall in southern China and generates the biweekly oscillation of the SAH in summer. Despite climate warming, the atmospheric heat source over the TP, particularly the spring SH, exhibits a clear weakening trend from the 1980s to 2000s. This weakening of the spring SH contributed to the anomalous 'dry in the north' and 'wet in the south' rainfall pattern observed over East China. The palaeolake evolution across the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas has been extensively studied, but the timing of late Pleistocene lake highstands remains controversial. Robust dating of lacustrine deposits is of importance in resolving this issue. This paper presents C or optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) age estimates from two sets of late Quaternary lacustrine sequences in the Qaidam Basin and Tengger Desert (northeastern Tibetan Plateau). The updated dating results show: (1) the radiocarbon dating technique apparently underestimated the age of the strata of >30 ka BP in Qaidam Basin; (2) although OSL and C dating agreed with each other for Holocene age samples in the Tengger Desert area, there was a significant offset in dating results of sediments older than ∼30 ka BP, largely resulting from radiocarbon dating underestimation; (3) both cases imply that most of the published radiocarbon ages (e.g., older than ∼30 ka BP) should be treated with caution and perhaps its geological implication should be revaluated; and (4) the high lake events on the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas, traditionally assigned to MIS 3a based on C dating, are likely older than ∼80 ka based on OSL chronology. This paper uses the cloud resolving Active Tracer High-resolution Atmospheric Model coupled to the interactive surface model Hybrid in order to investigate the diurnal development of a lake-breeze system at the Nam Co Lake on the Tibetan Plateau. Simulations with several background wind speeds are conducted, and the interaction of the lake breeze with topography and background wind in triggering moist and deep convection is studied. The model is able to adequately simulate the systems most important dynamical features such as turbulent surface fluxes and the development of a lake breeze for the different wind conditions. We identify two different mechanisms for convection triggering that are dependent on the direction of the background wind: triggering over topography, when the background wind and the lake breeze have the same flow direction, and triggering due to convergence between the lake-breeze front and the background wind. Our research also suggests that precipitation measurements at the centre of the basins on the Tibetan Plateau are not representative for the basin as a whole as precipitation is expected to occur mainly in the vicinity of the topography. Abstract: Knowledge of the Little Ice Age (LIA) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is of critical importance for understanding the climate changes over the past millennium. However, the data associated with the extents and chronologies of TP LIA moraines are highly dispersed in literature. Lack of systematic integration of these data hampers us to further understand the nature of the LIA, especially from a perspective of whole TP. The paper reviews multiple types of dating on LIA moraines to examine the timing and nature of the LIA on the TP. These include ages of radiocarbon 14C, lichenometry, and cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN), by which we can cross-date the same or morphostratigraphically similar landforms. LIA moraines on the TP are usually present a few hundred to thousand meters beyond the contemporary glaciers. The morphological and stratigraphic evidence indicates multiple periods of glacier advance during the last millennium (LIA). At present, available chronology evidence allows to fully compare the timing of the LIA maximum extents. The glaciers reached and retreated from their LIA maximum extents by an asynchronous pattern between different parts of the TP. The majority of glaciers advanced to their LIA maximum extents at late-14th and early-14th century on the southern and northwestern TP, respectively. The glaciers retreated from their LIA maximum extents during 16th to early-18th, late-14th to early-15th and early-16th century on the southern, northwestern, and northeastern TP, respectively. In addition, the glacier advance period of late-18th to early-19th centuries and retreat period of late-19th century are common on the whole TP. Comparison with ice core records suggests that on the TP, the glacier fluctuations responded more strongly to temperature than to precipitation. By comparison of the LIA chronologies from a global perspective, this paper also concludes that the LIA maximum extents occurred commonly earlier on the TP than in North Atlantic and Southern Hemisphere regions, despite of the variability in the timing of LIA maximum extents on the TP and in the North Atlantic regions. Abstract: What are the geodynamic processes that caused these deadly earthquakes? Why have these earthquakes caused so much damage? What are the key lessons that we have learned from these devastating earthquakes? Answers to these questions will significantly enhance not only our understanding of earthquake occurrence but also our ability to reduce seismic hazard. Under the framework of bi-lateral cooperation on earthquake sciences between China and USA, the Second Bi-Lateral Workshop on Earthquake Sciences was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, from April 22 to 25, 2011. Among the goals of this workshop was a review of recent advances in the study of great earthquakes and the exchange of ideas on earthquake disaster reduction. The principle theme of the workshop was “Great Earthquakes in the 21st Century and Geodynamics.” This Special Issue contains a total of 24 papers presented during the workshop. In this paper, the application of a fully distributed hydrological model J2000 with limited hydrological data was investigated in an alpine small and glacierized catchment, the Qugaqie (55 km with 7.3% glacier area), in the central Tibetan Plateau (TP). The J2000 was examined to investigate the influence on model performance, as well as on data, parameters and sensitivities. The model was calibrated with time series of discharge at the basin outlet for the summers of 2006 and 2007 and validated for the summer of 2008 by examining multiple objective functions. The model coefficients of determination were 0.62 and 0.91 for the calibration periods in 2006 and 2007, respectively, and 0.56 for the validation period in 2008. Simulated discharge was generally less than the observed values for the calibration and validation periods. The sensitivity to alteration in meteorological parameter has revealed that a change in air temperature would cause a dramatic increase of discharge in the Qugaqie catchment. Hypothetical climate scenario experiments showed that the increase of air temperature by 1°C resulted in 14% increase in runoff, whereas 20% increase in precipitation caused 9% increase in runoff but 12% reduction in glacier melt. In this paper, the spatial gravity distribution over Tibetan Plateau and the gravity rate of change at Lhasa for different Gaussian filter radii are computed using GRACE data. Results show that the estimate of the gravity rate of change is spatialradius-dependent of the Gaussian filter. The GRACE-estimated gravity rate of change agrees well with the surface measured one. In other words, the GRACE-estimated gravity rate of change has a limited value as that obtained by surface measurement when the spatial filter radius reaches zero. Then numerical simulations are made for different spatial radii of the Gaussian filter to investigate its behaviors when applied to surface signals. Results show that the estimate of a physical signal is filter-radius dependent. If the computing area is equal to or less than the mass area, especially for a uniformly distributed mass, the estimate gives an almost correct result, no matter what filter radius is used. The estimate has large error because of the signal leakage caused by harmonic truncation if the computing area is much bigger than the mass distribution (or inverse for a small mass anomaly). If a mass anomaly is too small, it is difficult to recover it from space observation unless the filter radius is extremely small. If the computing point (or area) is outside the mass distribution, the estimated result is almost zero, particularly for small filter radii. These properties of the Gaussian filter are helpful in applying GRACE data in different geophysical problems with different spatial position and geometrical size. We further discuss physical sources causing the scalar gravity change at Lhasa. Discussions indicate that the gravity rate of change at Lhasa is not caused by the present-day ice melting (PDIM) (or Little Ice Age, LIA) effect because no ice melting occurs in Lhasa city and nearby. The gravity rate of change is attributable mainly to tectonic deformation associated with the Indian Plate collision. Large areas of the Tibetan plateau are only covered by a sparse network of ground snow sampling stations, while the snow cover is highly heterogeneously distributed due to wind, topography etc. Nevertheless, the snow accumulation and spatial patterns play an important role in the hydrological cycle. It releases moisture during the dry spring period before the onset of the monsoon season. Widely used MODIS snow cover products have been available globally since 2002. The understanding of the temporal and spatial distribution of snow cover in a given region calls for a comprehensive data representation method. In this paper a method to visualize both spatial and temporal aspects of snow cover distribution from MODIS 8-day composite data is presented. It is based on RGB display of the snow cover data which is grouped according to season. The RGB syntheses of snow cover distribution (RSD) were generated for the Nam Co Basin in the central part of the Tibetan Plateau during the years of 2002-2009. An alternating pattern of monsoon and autumn snow cover was identified in the western part of the basin which corresponds to the biennial character of the variations of the Indian monsoon. Monsoon snow cover was found in RSD images for the years 2002, 2004 and 2008 whereas in years 2003 and 2009 the autumn snow cover is dominant. The eastern part of the basin does not follow this general pattern since it is affected by the so called ?lake effect?, which is a snow fall induced by the passing of dry and cold westerlies over the lake surface during the winter months. The years 2002, 2006 and 2007 were identified as years with a particularly strong lake effect from the RSD images. Areas with permanent snow cover and areas that were snow free were both found to be relatively stable. Comparison of the lake effect at Nam Co with nearby Siling Co, where the lake effect is smaller or absent, suggests that the presence of an effective barrier on the opposite side of the lake is a prerequisite for the occurrence of the strong lake effect. Abstract: This paper describes a multi-temporal grid method for quantifying changes in glacier coverage. A multi-temporal grid synthesizes spatial, attribute and process components of glacier information by sequentially combining spatial data from satellite images or maps. It enables us to identify glacier retreat and advance areas in individual grid cells for three or more periods of data sets. Discrepancies among the sequential data sets were detected graphically and numerically, including noise from geo-location error, misclassification, or different interpretation results in various pixel resolutions. Noise was detected and corrected to a large extent by visualization of the synthetic grid. The paper compares the results with that from a common method based on individual data sets, focusing on the Mt. Naimona’Nyi and Mt. Qomolangma regions at the northern slopes of the Himalayas. Results show that the identified noise (e.g. by 2.5km2 in the Mt. Naimona’Nyi region) is much larger than measurement uncertainty calculated by sensor resolution and co-registration error (e.g. by 0.015km2 in the Mt. Naimona’Nyi region). After noise removal, we notice that glacier recession clearly accelerates. The multi-temporal grid method results in a better quantification of glacier variation. It shows that glaciers in the Himalayas have both retreated and advanced during the last several decades, with retreat dominating and accelerating. Glaciers on the northern slope of Mt. Qomolangma in the middle Himalayas retreat more extensively and faster than those in the Mt. Naimona’Nyi region in the western Himalayas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Rapid economic development has spurred land use change in China since the Chinese government initiated its economic reform in 1978. Although many papers have analyzed the characteristics of land use change, especially cropland conversion to non-agricultural use affected by economic development in the developed regions of China, relatively less attention has been paid to studying the characteristics of land use change affected by both economic development and environmental changes in its undeveloped regions. This paper analyzes the land use change and its driving forces in Dulan County, Qinghai Province on the Tibetan Plateau during 1990–2000. The land use change was studied based on the landscape metrics change and transition matrix of land use types, while its driving forces were analyzed according to climatic changes and socioeconomic development. The study indicates that the increase of land use benefits was given great attention; however, the protection of arid environment did not attracted much attention. The study suggests that the land use should be based on the sustainable protection of arid environment on the Tibetan Plateau. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Sensible heat flux greatly influences the Indian monsoon. In this study, we calculated sensible heat flux time-series for 12 sites over the western Tibetan Plateau using Price and Dunne's formula and adjusting the stability function. The time-series were derived from the field observations from the GEWEX Asian Monsoon Experiment (GAME)/Tibet programme under the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX). This paper demonstrates that monthly sensible heat fluxes show strong correlations with corresponding precipitation, and that the correlation coefficients increase with precipitation amount. The preceding winter and spring solid precipitation (snowfall and resulting snowpack) can also influence sensible heat flux in May, but the situation is complex. The correlations between heat flux and snowfall at Amdo, Naqu, and Lhasa are negative, but they are positive at Gaize (also known as Gerze) and Dingri. There is a significant relationship between how the variations from the mean calculated heat fluxes at Amdo differ from those at Rikaze, or Dingri, Cuona and Longzi, and their respective June-September precipitation amounts. This phenomenon may result from changes in circulation. When the sensible heat fluxes are above average north of the influence of the Indian monsoon and below average to the south, the summer monsoon circulation develops early and with greater intensity and precipitation, and vice versa. The contemporary carbon balance over the Tibetan Plateau is highly uncertain with a ten-fold difference between various estimates. In a warming world, the potential exists for a large carbon release from its permafrost which could compromise China's 2060 carbon-neutral goal. Here, we used a satellite- and inventory-based approach, ecosystem models, and atmospheric inversions to estimate that the carbon sink was 33.12–37.84 TgC yr−1 during 2000–2015. The carbon sink induced by climate change and increasing CO2 levels largely overcompensated for a livestock grazing-induced carbon source of 0.38 TgC yr−1. By 2060, the carbon sink is projected to increase by 38.3–74.5% under moderate to high emissions scenarios, with the enhanced vegetation carbon uptake outweighing the warming-induced permafrost carbon release. The restoration of degraded grassland could sequestrate an additional 9.06 TgC yr−1, leading to a total carbon sink of 57.78–70.52 TgC yr−1. We conclude that the Tibetan Plateau's ecosystems absorbed two-and-a-half times the amount of its cumulative fossil CO2 emissions during 2000–2015 and that their carbon sinks will almost double in strength in the future, helping to achieve China's pledge to become carbon neutral by 2060. The spring sensible heating (SSH) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), which can significantly affect the precipitation in China, has experienced three different stages of change, showing significant increasing (1961–1979, Stage I), decreasing (1980–2002, Stage II), and increasing (2003–2014, Stage III) trends. In this study, the impact of these different trends in TP SSH on spring precipitation (SPR) in China and their possible mechanisms are investigated, based on observations and the reanalysis product. In Stage I, the SPR represents a contrasting north-south pattern associated with the increasing TP SSH, showing increasing trends over southern China and decreasing trends over central and northern China. Further, the spatial distribution of SPR trends shows a contrasting east-west pattern in Stage II. That is, persistent weakening TP SSH plays a more crucial role in increasing and decreasing SPR over southwestern and southern China, respectively. However, compared with the significant trend in SPR in Stage III, the regulation of TP SSH on SPR weakens significantly. Dynamically, the increasing TP SSH in Stage I can strengthen the subtropical westerly jet in the upper layer, simultaneously configured with an anomalous cyclone in northeastern China, which deepens the East Asian trough. Thus, anomalous convergence in the upper layer occurs over central and northern China, favoring the downdraft. It then causes more cold and dry air to move southward in the lower troposphere, which then encounters the warm and wet southwest airflows, boosting the updraft over southern China. In Stage II, regression analysis shows that if the TP SSH increases, an anomalous cyclone in the middle and upper troposphere occurs over the western TP, causing the downdraft and less precipitation over southwestern China, while a cyclone in the lower troposphere occurs over the western North Pacific and extends to southern China, promoting the ascending motions and more precipitation in southern China. Glypholecia qinghaiensis An C. Yin, Q. Y. Zhong & Li S. Wang is described as new to science. It is characterized by its squamulose thallus, compound apothecia, ellipsoid ascospores, and the presence of rhizines on the lower surface of the thallus. The two westerly branches have a significant impact on the climate of the area on the eastern side of the Tibetan Plateau when flowing around it. A continuous drought event in Southwest China from the winter of 2009 to the spring of 2014 caused huge economic losses. This research focuses on the dynamic field anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau during this event using statistical analysis, attempts to decipher its mechanism on drought in Southwest China, and provides a regression model. We established that the anticyclone and downdraft over the Tibetan Plateau were weaker than usual during the drought, which would reduce the southward cold airflow on the northeast of the Tibetan Plateau and strengthen the west wind from dry central Asia on the south of the plateau. As a result, a larger area of the southwest region in China was controlled by the warm and dry air mass, which was acting against precipitation. The results will be of reference value to the drought forecast for Southwest China, and also encourage further research about how the Tibetan Plateau influence the climate on its eastern side. The genus Parachironomus has a cosmopolitan distribution including 85 valid described species worldwide. Species records and studies of the genus in the Tibetan Plateau are scarce. In this study, the genus Parachironomus from China is revised and two new species, Parachironomus wangi Liu & Lin, sp. nov. and Parachironomus nankaiensis Liu & Lin, sp. nov., are described based on adult morphology and molecular data. Paracladopelma demissum Yan, Wang & Bu is placed in the genus Parachironomus as a new combination. A neighbor-joining tree was reconstructed based on all known Parachironomus COI DNA barcodes. Snow on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is an important signal for the prediction of East Asian climate. In this study, the relationship between the TP spring snowmelt and spring and summer precipitation in Northwest China (NWC) was investigated, along with the possible mechanisms linked to the impacts of snowmelt on precipitation. The results showed that the TP spring snowmelt had significant impacts on spring and summer precipitation in NWC. For example, when there was a large spring snowmelt in the central- eastern TP, the spring and summer precipitation in the Hexi Corridor and southeast NWC was excessive, especially in summer; when there was a large spring snowmelt in the northern TP, the spring and summer precipitation was deficient across the whole of NWC, while a large spring snowmelt in the western TP led to deficient spring and summer precipitation in eastern NWC but excessive precipitation in western NWC. The possible mechanisms for this included the fact that more spring snowmelt over the TP led to higher soil moisture contents, which further resulted in weakened subtropical westerly and enhanced ridge over Xinjiang. By changing the TP thermal forcing, these anomalous atmospheric circulation conditions transported water vapor into NWC, thus creating excessive summer precipitation in that region. Extreme cold wave (ECW) events in Southwest China (SWC) often result in considerable socioeconomic impacts. Here, cold wave (CW) events over SWC are identified and classified into ECW and ordinary CW (OCW) events according to their intensity. Before a CW event, cold air accumulates over Siberia and the northern side of the Tibetan Plateau (NTP), with the latter determining the intensity of CW events over SWC, meaning it is a key factor in identifying the differences between the evolution processes of ECW and OCW events. The accumulation of cold air over the NTP is associated with a subtropical wave train from the North Atlantic, which is likely triggered by the tripole mode of the SST anomalies in the North Atlantic (NAT). Before an ECW event, the North Atlantic SST shows a negative-phase with a "warm–cold–warm" pattern. There are two wave trains—one from the subtropical North Atlantic and the other from high latitudes, which converge over the Tibetan Plateau and contribute to the development of a strong positive height anomaly that shapes the East Asian Trough (EAT). The northeasterly wind after the trough transports cold air to the NTP. There is no subtropical wave train during OCW events, the orientation of the EAT is only influenced by the high-latitude wave train. The cold air moves eastward and southward quickly and dissipates. On the interannual scale, the NAT is also conducive to the strengthening of the CW events over SWC. Understanding local encounters with large carnivores is important for promoting sustainable coexistence. The use of smartphones and social media in geographically remote areas offers a novel avenue to study human–wildlife encounters from a local perspective. We conducted a content analysis of mobile videos on social media (n = 207) to characterize human encounters with snow leopards, gray wolves, and brown bears on the Tibetan Plateau in China. We also used ethnographic interviews to understand the backgrounds and motivations of videographers. Results show large carnivore encounters are not necessarily conflictual. Over half of encounters are neutral without observable interference between people and predators. The likelihood of a "negative encounter" is significantly associated with the target species, the distance between the videographer and the animal, the level of human influence in the surroundings, and the presence of other animals (i.e., dogs and livestock). Local Tibetan herders document unusual encounters with carnivores using videos for various reasons, but what is deemed unusual is context‐dependent and fluid. Our study demonstrates that social media videos can provide valuable insights into the diversity and complexity of human–wildlife interactions. Five large earthquakes of M ≥ 7.0 (based on the magnitude scale of the China Earthquake Networks Center) occurred in and near the Tibetan Plateau during 2008-2014, including the Wenchuan M8.0 earthquake on May 12, 2008 (BJT). In this paper, the Tibetan Plateau was chosen to be the study region, and calculating parameters of pattern informatics (PI) method with grid of 1° × 1° and forecasting time interval of 8 years were employed for the retrospective study according to the previous studies for M7 earthquake forecasting. The sliding step of forecasting interval was 1 year, and the hotspot diagrams of each forecasting interval since 2008 were obtained year by year. The relationships among the hotspots and the M ≥ 7.0 earthquakes that occurred during the forecast intervals were studied. The predictability of PI method was tested by verification of receiver-operating characteristic curve (ROC) and R score. The results show that the successive obvious hotspots occurred during the sliding forecasting intervals before four of the five earthquakes, while hotspots only occurred in one forecasted interval without successive evolution process before one of the five earthquakes, which indicates that four of the five large earthquakes could be forecasted well by PI method. Test results of the predictability of PI method by ROC and R score show that positive prospect of PI method could be expected for long-term earthquake forecast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In their thoughtful paper entitled "An equable subtropical climate throughout China in the Miocene based on palaeofloral evidence", Qing Wang, Yan Li, David K. Ferguson, Wen-Bo Mo, and Nan Yang (2021) imply that China exhibited negligible latitudinal mean annual precipitation (MAP) gradients and lacked arid regions during the Miocene. They also speculate that there was no abrupt change in elevation of the Tibetan Plateau, nor that the plateau attained its present altitude or orography during that period. These conclusions were derived mainly by using a co-existence approach (CA) and 'incomplete data'. Here, we use CA with training data and also integrate a coexistence likelihood estimation, a pollen-MAP boundary, a desert-MAP boundary, and other newly published MAP data to show that Northwest China consistently exhibited drier conditions than South China and East China during the entire Miocene, with our new values being 300–500 mm lower than those of Wang et al. (2021). This implies that there were large spatial gradients of MAP in China during the Miocene, which may be directly linked with the growth of the Tibetan Plateau, the global cooling, as well as other factors. Abstract: Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) has just been listed into Stockholm Convention as a persistent organic pollutant recently. This paper studied the HBCDs in 79 wild fish from high mountain lakes and rivers of the Tibetan Plateau. The ∑HBCDs in fish muscles ranged from non detectable levels to 13.7 ng/g lipid weight (lw) (mean value of 2.12 ng/g lw) with a high detection frequency of 65.8%. α-HBCD dominated among the isomers and accounted for 78.2% of the total burden. Concentrations of ∑HBCDs in the fish were significantly correlated with the lipid content. A decreasing trend was observed between α-HBCD and trophic level. Positive correlation was also noted between the HBCD levels in fish from lakes and the annual precipitation, and this implied the long-range atmospheric transport of HBCDs to the Tibet Plateau. This was the first work to widely explore HBCDs contamination in the aquatic ecosystems of the Tibetan Plateau. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The impact of soil moisture conditions on the triggering of afternoon convection over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) was investigated by applying the convective triggering potential (CTP) and humidity index framework developed by Findell and Eltahir (2003a, https://doi.org/10.1175/1525-7541(2003)004<0552:acosml>2.0.co;2, 2003b, https://doi.org/10.1175/1525-7541(2003)004<0570:acosml>2.0.co;2) using a slab model. Atmospheric sounding observations from May to September from 2015 to 2019 from 16 sites were used for the diagnosis. The results showed that the thresholds of CTP and humidity index in the lower‐layer atmosphere (HIlow) are distinct from other regions such as the United States and India, suggesting an easier triggering potential for the TP due to its high altitude induced lower air density and higher buoyancy. The convection over the TP is mainly affected by the atmospheric background. The percentages of soil moisture‐controlled cases is close to 50% mainly located in the broadly central TP. In addition, the positive feedback is mainly located in the center of the TP. Negative feedback appears in the southwest of the TP. Soil moisture is the most critical factor for precipitation triggering in soil moisture‐precipitation feedback, while wind speed can also have certain influences. The impact of soil moisture on different outcomes has no significant correlation with land surface elevation differences. Negative feedback in the southwest of the TP appeals to a necessary enhancement requirement for sounding observations in the western TP. Abstract: Trade-off between the depth of an interface and the average velocity above the interface is well known in receiver function inversion. To resolve model ambiguity, surface wave dispersion data, which are sensitive to vertical shear velocity average, are commonly combined with P receiver functions in the inversion. In this paper, we design a joint inversion scheme using the neighborhood searching algorithm to solve shear velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle with receiver function and surface wave dispersion data. Two sets of stretched splines are implemented in the inversion to obtain smooth velocity profiles, separated by a specifically defined Moho discontinuity. We apply this method to the dense Hi-CLIMB seismic array in the central Tibetan Plateau (TP). The Indian crust is observed to subduct and underplate the Tibetan crust between the Yarlung-Zangbo suture and the Bangong-Nujiang suture, at the latitude of about 31.5°N. The crust thickens from about 50km below the Indian foreland to over 75km south of Bangong-Nujiang suture and turns shallower at around 65km under the Qiangtang block. We identify two zones with complicated Moho structure beneath the northern Lhasa block and southern Qiangtang block, indicating highly deformed Moho morphology, and beneath the Himalaya block associated with the underthrusting of the Indian Plate, respectively. A low velocity zone is present in the mid-crust in most parts of the profile under the TP with up to more than 10% velocity reduction. The low velocity structure is not continuous, forming discontinuous patches rather than channels, calling for a revision of the channel flow model. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Tibetan plateau contains thousands of small and big lakes. Changes in the water level of these lakes can be an important indicator for the water balance of the Tibetan plateau, but were until now extremely difficult to monitor: performing continuous in situ measurements at a large number of lakes is not feasible because of their remoteness, while radar altimetry is only capable of monitoring large lakes. Between 2003 and 2009 the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on board of the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) obtained world-wide elevation profiles during 18 one-month campaigns. Using the GLAS data it is possible to obtain lake levels at decimeter accuracy. Available GLAS data over the Tibetan lakes is selected by means of the MODIS lake mask. As a result, lake level variations between 2003 and 2009 of 154 lakes of over a square kilometer size could be observed. For these lakes, an analysis of annual water level trends is made, and then their yearly gained or lost water volumes are estimated. In total, an area averaged increase in lake level of 0.20m/year over the Tibetan plateau is observed between 2003 and 2009. Most of the individual lakes considered in this paper have little or no levels apparently documented, and so the ICESat data provide the first baseline measurements of these lakes in the vertical. The eight datasets of the summer (June-August) surface sensible heat (SH) flux over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are compared on the time scales of the climatology, interannual variability and linear trend during 1980-2006. These data sets include five reanalyses (National Center for Environmental Prediction reanalysis, NCEPR1 and NCEPR2, NCEP climate forecast system reanalysis, CFSR, Japanese 25-year reanalysis, JRA, and European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis, ERA40), two land surface model outputs (Noah model data of Global Land Data Assimilation System version 2, G2_Noah, and Simple Biosphere version 2 output by Yang et al., YSiB2), and estimated SH based on China Meteorological Administration (CMA) station observations, ObCh. The results suggest that the summer SH on the TP differs from one dataset to another due to different inputs and calculations. Climatologically, the ERA40 and JRA distribute rather uniformly while the other six products show similar regional disparities, that is, larger in the west than in the east and stronger in the north and the south than in the middle of the plateau. The mean magnitude of the SH averaged over the 76 stations above the TP varies considerably among each dataset with the difference of more than 20 W m between the maximum (G2_Noah) and minimum (ObCh). Nevertheless, they are consistent in the interannual variability and mostly show a significant decreasing trend corresponding to the weakening surface wind speed, in spite of the distinct trend for the ground-air temperature difference among the different data sets. Abstract: This paper presents detailed SHRIMP zircon U–Pb chronology, mineral chemistry, major and trace element, and Sr–Nd–Hf isotope geochemistry of two Cenozoic plutons (Karibasheng and Kuzigan) in western Tibetan Plateau, China. The Karibasheng pluton is composed of monzogranite, and the Kuzigan pluton consists of syenogranite, diopside-bearing syenite and diopside syenite. SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating on monzogranite, syenogranite and diopside syenite shows that they were emplaced in Miocene (12–10Ma). These rocks are metaluminous and show the affinities with shoshonitic rocks, i.e., alkali-rich (K2O+Na2O=8.6–13.4wt.%), high K2O contents (4.7–10.6wt.%) with high K2O/Na2O ratios (1.2–4.6), enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) (e.g., Ba=2200–9100ppm; Sr=840–3100ppm, most >1100ppm) and rare earth elements (REE), especially light REE (LREE) (La/Yb up to 168). The rocks are depleted in high field strength elements (HFSE) but show high Nb/Ta ratios (13.3–30.7). The granites have lower initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7091–0.7099) and higher εNd (T) values (−7.1 to −9.5) than the syenites that have initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7095–0.7117 and εNd (T) values of −8.6 to −12.2. Their zircon εHf (T) values (−7.2 to −9.7) are coupled with their whole-rock εNd (T) values, and plot along the mantle array. The amphibole–plagioclase thermometer and estimation of apatite saturation temperature indicate that the primary magmas had high temperatures (up to 880°C for the granites and up to 1100°C for the syenites). The source depth for the granites and syenites is <70–100km inferred by the metasomatic volatile phase (amphibole–phlogopite) relation, and thus most probably within the upper part of lithospheric mantle. Detailed elemental and isotopic data and major element modeling suggest that the granites and syenites were derived directly by partial melting of the veined lithospheric mantle that had been hybridized by the continental slab-derived melts. Abstract: Although many studies of the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake have described the ground deformation features, rupture mechanism, and structural features of the seismogenic fault zone associated with this event, debate remains concerning the total length of the co-seismic surface rupture zone and whether the earthquake ruptured the Qingchuan Fault in the northeastern segment of the Longmen Shan Thrust Belt (LSTB), China. In this paper, we present new field evidence that the Qingchuan Fault was ruptured by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and that the total length of the co-seismic surface rupture zone is up to 285–300km. Field investigations reveal that the earthquake produced a ≥60-km-long surface rupture zone along the pre-existing Qingchuan Fault, with the offset being mainly right-lateral strike–slip and a distinct component of vertical slip. Co-seismic surface ruptures are characterized by faults and extensional cracks. Field measurements indicate co-seismic right-lateral strike–slip displacements along the Qingchuan Fault of 0.3–0.6m and vertical offsets of 0.2–0.5m, which differs to the displacements observed along the central and southwestern segments of the Wenchuan surface rupture zone in the displacement amount and sense. The change in slip sense from thrust-dominated slip in the central and southwestern segments of the LSTB to right-lateral strike–slip-dominated displacement along the Qingchuan Fault (northeastern segment of the LSTB) reflects a change in the orientation of compressive stress along the LSTB, associated with eastward extrusion of the Tibetan Plateau as it accommodates the ongoing penetration of the Indian Plate into the Eurasian Plate. Abstract: Deciphering significant sedimentological processes from a set of sediment samples is an important step in reconstructing environmental changes. One approach going beyond classical methods is the unmixing of grain-size distributions. This paper presents a flexible end-member modelling algorithm that is based on eigenspace analysis and considers inherent uncertainties. It has been applied to the detrital grain-size components of lacustrine surface sediment samples of Lake Donggi Cona, Qinghai Province, China. It allows up to five grain-size end-members to be characterised and quantified in an optimal model. An end-member with a major mode in the clay domain accounts for 34% of variance within the grain-size data set. It may represent sedimentation of suspension load from linear and laminar runoff during heavy precipitation events in summer. Three end-members in the fine sand to medium silt domains make up 60% of lacustrine sedimentation. They may represent local to remote aeolian processes that peak in wintertime. A multimodal end-member explaining the remaining 6% of variance may represent further fluvial and littoral dynamics or random fluctuations and measurement errors. Several model runs of different scaling and numbers of end-members provided a suitable way to determine uncertainties inherent to the model. A comparison of 12 different model runs and their respective uncertainties yielded a distinct model of robust end-members. The clay and medium silt end-members are robust features of detrital sedimentation within Lake Donggi Cona. They alone explain 54.4% of total variance in the data. However, no spatial pattern or relation to water depth is found for any of the grain-size end-members. Thus, when past detrital sedimentation at Lake Donggi Cona is reconstructed, a special focus should be on the robust features attributed to aeolian and suspension-related sedimentation processes as well as on effective sediment mixing processes impeding a distinct correlation between grain size and spatial attributes. Further applications of the end-member modelling algorithm to other depositional environments are encouraged to demonstrate its universal applicability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Since the pioneer wide-angle seismic profile along the Yadong–Gulu rift acquired in 1974 by the ex-Institute of Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), several research programs aimed to deep geophysics, performed thanks to the participation of Chinese national and international institutions, have been developed during last 35years, including 23 wide-angle seismic profiles with total length of about 6000km. These profiles are unevenly distributed, most of them in eastern Tibet and few profiles in western Tibet. In this paper, we make a summarized presentation of all these wide-angle seismic profiles and provide an overall view of the seismic velocity structure of the crust beneath the broad Tibetan plateau, which is the product of the continuous convergence and collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates since about 50Ma ago. Different patterns of crustal thickness variation related to the tectonic blocks and along suture zones of the region are displayed. The crust thickness is confirmed to be about 70–75km under southern Tibet, and 60–65km under northern, northeastern and southeastern Tibet. The leading edge of the subducted lithosphere reaches the northern margin of the plateau and directly contacts with Tarim Basin. Westward of the 90°E boundary, the Indian crust is moving towards the northern edge of the plateau and collides with Tarim Basin at 80°E while reach the Bangong–Nujiang suture belt at 88°E; eastward of the 90°E boundary, the northern edge of the crust should be at 50–100km south of Bangong–Nujiang suture. Abstract: A N–S-trending active fault zone, which includes the Anninghe, Zemuhe, and Xiaojiang faults, forms the tectonic boundary of the Tibetan Plateau on its southeastern margin, marking the limit of the eastward extrusion of the Tibetan Plateau. In this paper, we document the Late Pleistocene–Holocene activity of the Zemuhe Fault, which is the central segment of the fault zone. We have been able to determine slip rate and the average recurrence interval of large earthquakes upon the fault, based on aerial photograph interpretations, field investigations, trench excavations, and radiocarbon age data. The Zemuhe Fault is mainly characterized by left-lateral offsets with a horizontal slip rate of ~10–12mm/yr, and a vertical slip component of ~2.0–2.4mm/yr. Trench investigations and 14 C ages reveal that at least four large earthquakes occurred during the last 1100–1500years, indicating an average recurrence interval of ~300–400years for M 7.0–7.5 earthquakes, consistent with the documented history of the region. Our results confirm that the Zehume Fault plays an important role as a tectonic boundary in releasing the strain energy caused by the southeastwards motion of the Tibetan Plateau. Abstract: There is a shortage of research concerning the relationships between land-use change, soil erosion, and soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) dynamics in alpine environments such as those found in the Tibetan plateau. In this paper, typical sloping farmlands converted from grassland 50 years ago in eastern Tibet were selected to determine dynamics of soil erosion, SOC, and total N associated with land-use change. Soil samples were collected from sloping farmland and control fields (grassland). The 137Cs, SOC, total N contents, and soil particle size fractions were analyzed in these samples. As compared with the control fields, 137Cs, SOC, and total N inventories in the sloping farmlands decreased by 30%, 27%, and 33%, respectively. Meanwhile variations in the three parameters were enhanced in the sloping farmlands, with coefficients of variation (CVs) of 38%, 23%, and 20%, respectively, for 37Cs, SOC, and total N. In addition, SOC and total N inventories significantly decreased with increasing soil erosion in the sloping farmland. In a sloping farmland with a steep 24° gradient, the 137Cs inventory gradually increased along a downslope transect with its lowest value at 0Bqm−2 in the top-slope position (0m). The soil clay (<0.002mm) content in such an area increased with decreasing elevation (r=−0.95, p=0.001). Significant correlations between 137Cs and clay (r=0.92, p=0.003), SOC (r=0.96, p=0.001), or total N (r=0.95, p=0.001) were also found in the farmland. These results showed that converting alpine grassland to sloping farmland accelerates soil erosion, losses in SOC and N, and increases the soil’s spatial variability. The combined impacts of tillage and water erosion contributed a significant decrease in the soil’s organic carbon and N storages. Particularly in steep sloping farmlands, tillage erosion contributed for severe soil loss, but the soil redistribution pattern was dominated by water erosion, not tillage erosion, due to the lack of boundaries across the field patches. It was also found that 137Cs, SOC, and total N moved along the same pathway within these sloping farmlands, resulting in net C and N losses during soil redistribution. Abstract: A Mt. Geladaindong (GL) ice core was recovered from the central Tibetan Plateau (TP) spanning the period 1940–2005 AD. High-resolution major ion (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, SO4 2−, NO3 −) time-series are used to investigate variations in atmospheric dust loading through time. The crustal source ions vary seasonally with peaks in dust concentrations occurring during the winter and spring which are consistent with atmospheric dust observations at local meteorological stations. However, both similarities and dissimilarities are displayed between the decadal variation of atmospheric dust in the GL core and dust observation records from meteorological stations, which can be attributed to local environmental effects at the stations. This paper compares the 1980s and 1970s as case periods for low and high atmospheric dust loading, respectively, two periods reflecting shifts in spring atmospheric circulation (a weakening of zonal and meridional winds) from the 1970s (a period of enhanced dust aerosol transportation to central TP) to the 1980s (a period of diminished dust aerosol transportation to central TP), especially a significant decrease of meridional wind speeds in the 1980s. GL ice core dust proxies (Ca2+ and K+) are correlated with Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) Aerosol Index (AI) data in spring over the TP and in the northwestern China (especially for K+). Thus variability of crustal ions in central TP ice core provides a proxy for reconstructing a history of atmospheric dust loading not only on the TP, but also in northwestern China. Abstract: It is generally believed that Cenozoic potassic and ultrapotassic volcanic rocks of the Tibetan Plateau were generated by partial melting of enriched mantle. This paper reports new data regarding the elemental and isotopic compositions of the KonglongXiang volcanic rocks (KVR; K2O/Na2O>2 and low MgO contents) in the middle–western Lhasa terrane, Tibetan Plateau. Ar–Ar isotope dating of a sample from the KVR yields an age of 21.3Ma, indicating that the KVR lavas erupted during the Early Miocene. The KVR consists mainly of trachyte and rhyolite. A comparison of the KVR with Cenozoic potassic volcanic rocks of the Tibetan Plateau and the results of melting experiments involving K-rich volcanic rocks, as well as other K-rich volcanic rocks from throughout the world, reveals that the KVR trachytes originated from a mafic lower crust containing K-rich minerals rather than from a mantle source. The KVR rhyolites were probably derived from the middle–upper crust. Based on age data, compositional data, and the regional tectonic setting, we propose that the formation of the KVR and associated N–S grabens was triggered by Early Miocene E–W regional extension in the area of the southern Tibetan Plateau. Abstract: The downward solar or shortwave radiation (SWD) and atmospheric longwave radiation (LWD) play essential roles in controlling alpine environment and ecosystem. Meanwhile, utilization of solar energy has a growing demand by local residents, due to high energy cost in high altitude regions. However, it is always costly for acquiring the radiation data and there are few studies on the radiation modeling in these regions. This paper presented the major characteristics of SWD and LWD over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), which were measured at 11 stations built in the region. The results showed that LWD received by TP is much lower than that of its surrounding areas and their monthly-mean differences can be up to 100Wm−2. On the contrary, SWD over TP is significantly higher than that over its surrounding areas, due to low extinction rate of airmass, water vapor, and aerosol occurred in TP. The recorded maximum value (∼0.9) of daily-mean transmittances much exceeds the upper bound (∼0.75) implied in most of the Angström–Prescott models; therefore, these models may under-estimate SWD over TP. One set of surface data-based estimate by a non-Angström–Prescott model and two sets of satellite estimates were also evaluated against the measurements. It is found that the surface data-based estimate, though not calibrated locally, shows a good agreement with the measurements and has an advantage of producing less root-mean-square errors and higher correlation coefficients than the satellite estimates. Under this condition, it is suggested to combine both the surface data-based estimate together with the satellite estimates in order to improve the accuracy of the SWD and LWD data. Abstract: The Tibetan Plateau covers an area of about one fourth of Europe, has an average elevation over 4000m above sea level, and is the water sources for about 40% of world''s population. In order to foresee future changes in water quality, it is important to understand what pressures are governing the spatial variation in water chemistry. In this paper the chemistry including major ions and trace elements in the headwaters of four major Asian rivers (i.e. the Salween, Mekong, Yangtze River and Yarlung Tsangpo) in the Tibetan Plateau was studied. The results showed that the content of dissolved salts in these Tibetan rivers was relatively high compared to waters from other parts of the world. The chemical composition of the four rivers were rather similar, with Ca2+ and HCO3 − being the dominating ions. The exception was the Yangtze River on the Plateau, which was enriched in Na+, Cl−, SO4 2− and Li due to silicate weathering followed by strong evaporation caused by a negative water balance, dissolution of evaporites in the catchment and some drainage from saline lakes. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Co, Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb, and Hg) and As, NH4 + were generally low in all the rivers. Anthropogenic impacts on the quality of the rivers were identified at a few locations in the Mekong River and Yarlung Tsangpo basins. Generally, the main spatial variation in chemical compositions of these under studied rivers was found to be governed mainly by difference in geological variation and regional climatic-environment. Climate change is, therefore, one of main determining factors on the water chemical characteristics of these headwaters of Asian major rivers in the Tibetan Plateau. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper we present sedimentologic, petrographic, and paleoecologic data from a ~810-m-thick section of late Neogene (ca. 9–7 to 1Ma) fluvio-lacustrine deposits in the high-elevation Zhada Basin of SW-Tibet. The tectonic evolution of the Zhada Basin region, located between the Himalayan Mountains in the S and the Transhimalayan Mountains in the N, is poorly understood, but sediment accumulation was probably initiated in response to the middle/late Miocene uplift of the Gurla Mandhata and Leo Pargil domes in the E and W, respectively. The sedimentary record can be subdivided into five stratigraphic units with distinctly different lithofacies associations (LA); these are, from bottom to top: a bedload-dominated fluvial LA (Unit 1, 0–90m); a nearshore lacustrine, deltaic LA (Unit 2, 90–220m); an offshore lacustrine LA (Unit 3, 220–500m); a nearshore lacustrine, fan-delta LA (Unit 4, 500–600m); and a fan-delta/alluvial fan LA (Unit 5, 600–810m). Clast and heavy mineral compositions revealed sediment supply from two different provenance areas, one from the south and one from the north/east, based on catchment geology of the Himalaya and Transhimalaya. Ostracode faunal assemblages are largely comparable to those of modern Tibetan lakes and allow the reconstruction of paleo-lake environments, including lake-level changes and salinity. The sedimentary pattern shows strong cyclicity at various scales (m, 10s m, and >100m). Small-scale cycles are interpreted as intrinsically-controlled depositional processes of deltas (lobe switching), whereas medium- and large-scale cycles are most likely forced by climate fluctuations. The overall evolution of the sedimentologic record includes: a strong and rapid increase in fluvial discharge in the uppermost portion of Unit 1, a transition from fluvial to lacustrine deposition during deposition of Unit 2, rhythmic variations in the style of lacustrine sedimentation during deposition of Unit 3, an increase in the supply of coarse clastics starting with deposition of Unit 4, and a transition from lacustrine to alluvial sedimentation during deposition of Unit 5. We speculate that the increase in discharge and, presumably, precipitation leading to the establishment of lacustrine conditions in the lower part of the section (Unit 2) is largely due to regional summer monsoon intensification during the late Miocene, and that the transition from lacustrine to alluvial sedimentation in the uppper part of the section reflects the onset of Northern Hemisphere glaciation and winter monsoon strengthening at ~2.6Ma. Abstract: In this paper, a frozen soil parameterization scheme is developed based on the Common Land Model. We modify a frozen soil parameterization scheme using soil matric potential to define maximum liquid water content when soil temperature is below the freezing point; the simulation performance is validated using the data from Maqu station on the Tibetan Plateau from 2005 to 2006. The simulated results indicate that the modified frozen soil parameterization scheme allows the liquid water to exist when the soil temperature is below the freezing point, and the simulated soil liquid water content is significantly improved. The simulated soil temperature is also improved because of the successful simulation of the soil liquid water content. The distribution of energy from the modified model is closer to the observed data. Also, the simulated latent heat flux from the modified model increases and the simulated soil heat flux descends compared with the original model. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Variations in glacier meltwater in the source regions of the Tibetan Plateau's (TP) largest lake (Selin Co) and China's longest river (Yangtze River) regulate the local and downstream water balance under the warming climate. However, the magnitude of their variations over the past four decades is still unknown. Here, we examine long-term changes in glacier mass balance over 1976–2017 using KH-9 and CoSSC-TanDEM-X data. We find that the mean rate of glacier mass loss (GML) has accelerated from −0.21 ± 0.11 m a–1 over 1976–2000, to −0.28 ± 0.14 m a–1 over 2000–11, and subsequently to −0.48 ± 0.10 m a–1 over 2011–17. Changes in temperature and precipitation are the major causes of GML. Over 1976–2017, the contribution of decadal GML to Tuotuohe sub-basin runoff ranges from 4.3 to 8.0%, while its contribution to increased lake volume change in Selin Co and Chibzhang Co-Dorsoidong Co ranges from 3.5 to 16.3% and 19.2 to 21.4%, respectively. The GML of source regions made relatively small contributions to river runoff and lake supply, but plays a vital role when precipitation decreases. The quantitative evaluation of the water balance for the sources of great rivers and lakes over the TP is therefore important for water resource management and hydrological cycle studies. This paper presents a new frozen soil parameterization in the land surface scheme (LSS). A modified approximation Stefan solution is incorporated in the framework of the land surface model-SiB2 to calculate the frost/thaw depth over time and to estimate the soil moisture and temperature profiles during the freeze/thaw cycle. The structure of the soil model in Simple Biosphere Model 2 (SiB2) is kept, but the governing equations of water balance and surface heat balance are modified to account for soil freezing/thawing. The model is calibrated and validated using the GEWEX Asian Monsoon Experiment (GAME)-Tibet observations at MS3608 site, Tibetan Plateau. First, the original SiB2 without frozen soil parameterization is calibrated using the observations in summer; an optimized parameter set for the short grassland in the Tibetan Plateau was obtained. Then, the modified SiB2 with frozen soil parameterization is validated using the soil moisture and temperature observations in winter. The results show that the new model estimates the frost depth precisely with an error less than 9% and predicts the soil temperature reasonably and phase transition time realistically. It also improves the soil moisture estimation in the surface layer and the root zone significantly. The mean absolute errors of simulated soil moisture using the new model are 0.020 and 0.013 in the surface layer and root zone, respectively, far below than those without using the frozen soil parameterization. The Tibetan Plateau experienced severe aeolian desertification during the mid‐ and late 20th century, but mitigation of this aeolian desertification has occurred since 2000 despite a warming climate. The causes of aeolian desertiffication and its mitigation have been debated by scientists because of their potentially huge significance for PR China and Asia, as well as for global climate systems. Based on a review of previous studies and our own investigations, it appears that aeolian desertification from the 1970s to 2000 was caused primarily by unsustainable and irrational human activities, and its mitigation since the 2000 was mainly attributable to a warmer and wetter climate, combined with decreasing wind intensity, for the Plateau as a whole. However, the dominant factors for mitigation varied spatially. The Government's ecological protection projects have been implemented in some places with dense population, and played a key role in the mitigation in these places. The Plateau's climate will likely become warmer and wetter in the 21st century based on Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 model simulations. If the simulation results are credible, mitigation of aeolian desertification will continue in the 21st century due to a combination of continuing grazing exclusion and rotational grazing, even without artificial revegetation. In this study, we analyze the relationships between summer afternoon low cloud cover and environmental conditions over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Using in situ measurements, satellite data, and reanalysis, and based on theoretical analysis, we find that there is stronger thermal turbulence, lower temperature, and higher frequency of low cloud formation for the same surface relative humidity over the eastern and central TP compared with eastern China. With the same sensible heat flux, decreased air density enhances buoyancy flux, which increases the planetary boundary layer height and moisture vertical transport. At the same time, with the same near‐surface relative humidity, lower temperature over the TP decreases the lifting condensation level, which increases the probability of the air parcel reaching this level. Compared to the low‐elevation region in eastern China, these two mechanisms enhance low cloud occurrence in the afternoon over the TP. Plain Language Summary: Previous studies suggested that planetary boundary layer processes play an important role in the formation of more low clouds in the afternoon over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, detailed mechanisms for the differences in low cloud occurrence in the afternoon over the TP versus eastern China (low‐elevation region) remain unclear.
