This paper reviews the work of the Glasgow Quality of Life Group, a limited life project (1986–1990) within the Applied Population Research Unit of the then Department of Geography and Topographic Science at the University of Glasgow. It explores the contribution of Ronan Paddison, and the wider innovations and impact of the group's work. It argues that these innovations were methodological, strategic, and challenged the prevailing wisdom of the day that understood GB to riven by a simple north-south divide, in which the 'north' was perceived to be the poorer partner in every way. This paper represents a short ethnographic encounter with the site of the COP26 Climate Conference in Glasgow in 2021. It communicates an experiential picturing of the site as it was assembled and disassembled, as this was recorded in notes, conversations, via phone footage and in a short talk afterwards with human geography colleagues at the University of Glasgow. The paper seeks to make sense of this short experiential encounter by drawing from scholarship on ethnography, security and events of emergency assemblage. Purpose — The purpose of this paper is to chart the development and growth of open access and institutional repositories at the University of Glasgow, Scotland from initial work in 2001 to the University's recently launched service, Enlighten. The University of Glasgow is a signatory to the Scottish Open Access Declaration and recently released a statement on Open Access. Design/methodology/approach — The study will focus on the key lessons learned through a twin track approach of advocacy and service development during the DAEDALUS Project (2002-2005) and the transition of that work to a University service called Enlighten. This service includes a repository for published and peer-reviewed papers which has now had over 2 million hits and over 270,000 PDF downloads since it was established in February 2004. Findings — The paper reveals the lessons learned by the Library and the project team. It also identifies the range of issues which must be addressed in the successful implementation of a repository and its transition to a production service. These include the development of content policies, copyright clearance and the cultural change necessary to populate a repository service. These challenges have and continue to be addressed by the repository team at the University of Glasgow. Originality/value — This paper provides details of the lessons learned in the practical experience of setting up an institutional repository and ensuring its transition to a full and supported University service. The article discusses the highlights of the Screen Studies Conference, held on July 2-4, 1999 at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. The speakers in the opening plenary session included Lee Grieveson, Shelley Stamp and Kristen Whissel, who presented a variety of perspectives on early film cultures between 1907 and the 1910s ranging across textual readings and discussions of film audiences, both in relationship to the address of contemporaneous films, and the gendered and class-based constructions of the social spaces of film theatres.

The article discusses the highlights of the Screen Studies Conference that was held at the University of Glasgow in Scotland from July 3 to 5, 1998. An uncertainty over what constitutes the object of study of the history of cinema and television institutions and the history of film and television criticism was highlighted by the speakers. Laura Marks gave a presentation on the predicament of the alienation of academic study from creative production. This article historicises a dream analytic intervention launched in the 1930s by Scottish psychiatrist and future professor of psychological medicine at the University of Glasgow (1948–73), Thomas Ferguson Rodger (1907–78). Intimate therapeutic meetings with five male patients are preserved within the so-called 'dream books', six manuscript notebooks from Rodger's earlier career. Investigating one such case history in parallel with lecture material, this article elucidates the origins of Rodger's adapted, rapport-centred psychotherapy, offered in his post-war National Health Service, Glasgow-based department. Oriented in a reading of the revealing fourth dream book, the article unearths a history of the reception and adaptation of psychoanalysis from within a therapeutic encounter and in a non-elite context. Situating Rodger's psychiatric development in his Glasgow environment, it then contextualises the psychosocial narrative of the fourth book in relation to contrasting therapeutic commitments: an undiluted Freudianism and a pragmatic 'commonsense' psychotherapy, tempered to the clinical psychiatric, and often working-class, interwar Glasgow context. An exploration of pre-recorded dreams, transcribed free associations, and 'weekly reports' reveals that in practice, Rodger's Meyerian attitude worked productively with Freudian techniques to ennoble the patient's psychosocial testimony and personal wisdom. This psychotherapeutic eclecticism underpinned and made visible the patient's concurrent faith in and resistance to psychoanalytic interpretation. Chronicling a collaborative route to psychotherapeutic knowledge within a discrete encounter, the article situates post-war treatment values in the interwar impasse of outpatient psychiatry. This paper reports on a Medieval History Access course in which the author utilised teaching methods not traditionally associated with the discipline. The paper outlines the practice and outcomes of two of these methods: collaborative group work and embedded rhetorical training for essay writing. From her experience of these methods and her students' reflections on them, the author challenges her readers to engage more formally in discussion concerning the notion of discipline-specific pedagogical practice and asks whether such practice should ever be static. Background: A copy of Scleromyceti Sueciae, a work on which the nomenclature of many fungi is based was known to occur in Scotland's Glasgow University Botany Department but the buildings were devastated by fire in 2001 and the whereabouts of this important work, if it existed, was lost. Its re-finding is reported herein. Results: The Glasgow copy of Scleromyceti Sueciae, an uncut first edition of Fries' work, was located in the Glasgow Museums in its original cabinet being transferred there years before the fire and its specimens being now databased. It is one of the few existing uncut copies of this important scientific work and one of the best-preserved copies of the first edition. Conclusion: The discovery of this first edition of Scleromyceti Sueciae emphasizes the significance to reserve special conservation for important collections by early mycologists. It also allows interested mycologists world-wide to know of the existence in Glasgow of an uncut, first edition copy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article provides information on studies related to industrial relations by researchers from the Department of Social and Economic Research at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Michael Farbman and Charles Mulvey will conduct research on the effects of collective bargaining structures on the structure of earnings. Laurence Hunter in association with the Manpower Services Commission is engaged in a program to investigate the nature and dimensions of the labor shortages in West Central Scotland. In November 2003, the Scottish Executive Education Department (SEED) commissioned the SCRE Centre at the University of Glasgow to evaluate the impact of Section 15 of the Standards in Scotland's Schools etc Act 2000. The evaluation took place between January 2004 and August 2005. A major strand of the research was the impact of the presumption of mainstreaming on special schools, including an exploration of the changing role of special schools, and the changing demands on staff in special education. The evidence presented in this paper suggests that whilst there may be widespread support for specialist provision within a policy climate of inclusion, the sector has undergone significant changes in the last few years. These changes have had a particular impact on the curriculum, teaching and learning, and ‘specialness’ of special schools. However, not all of these changes are due to the impact of mainstreaming. This paper considers how Hegel's philosophical idealism influenced the thinking and practical activities of four successive holders of the Chair of Moral Philosophy in the University of Glasgow between 1866 and 1927. It argues that their activities were shaped by Hegelian concepts of citizenship, which engendered a commitment to encouraging the organisation and development of liberal adult education. It considers how their support for social movements promoting new educational opportunities, notably university extension, the WEA and social settlement houses, had a substantial and lasting impact on the evolution of adult education during the twentieth century. Currently we can say that our autoimmune defense system is an appropriate recognition system, more than just a defense system of the body, given the large increase in automine diseases and viral infections with the appearance of the covid-2019 pandemic and its termination. Evidence for the relationship between exposures in fetal life, infancy, childhood and early adulthood, and risk of chronic disease in later middle-age continues to accumulate. Further understanding of the associations between exposures acting over the life course and current morbidity and mortality in middle-age and later must depend upon the follow-up of previously established cohorts. This paper describes the design of, and background to, a follow-up of individuals who participated in a survey of student health in the University of Glasgow between 1948 and 1968. 15 332 students, almost a quarter of whom were female, had detailed medical information collected from a doctor-administered questionnaire and physical examination. Participation was voluntary; approximately 50% of the student population took part and these students were rep-resentative of the entire student population. Data collected include: socio-demographic, behavioural, developmental, anthropometric, and clinical details, as well as details of medical history and family health and structure. Data are over 95% complete for most variables. Over 40% of students were examined on two or more occasions with 1026 students (6.8%) having four or more examinations. Over 90% of students were from social classes I–III. Eighty-two per cent (12 533/15 322) of the students have been traced and flagged through the National Health Service Central Register and attempts are on-going to increase this figure. Those study members who have been traced are representative of the original cohort. To date 1111 (7.2%) of those traced have died. These data constitute a unique record of the health and physical development of a large cohort of students from Glasgow. Follow-up to investigate the relationship between indices of health and development, (height, weight, blood pressure), health behaviours and social circumstances in childhood and young adulthood, and mortality and morbidity in later adulthood is under way. This essay discusses eighteenth-century student borrowings from the University of Glasgow, using these as a case study to examine how digital transformations of manuscript sources might help us move beyond received narratives and technologies of Enlightenment. It argues that while many of the assumptions of digital systems are inherited from Enlightenment discourses, freeing data from the confines of physical space using simple digital approaches has considerable potential for allowing us to construct a fuller, more detailed, and more democratic history of eighteenth-century readers and reading, surfacing idiosyncrasies, continuities, sociality, and forms of interconnection. The article focuses on the Nintendo Wii technology, developed by Pearse Hannigan, David Lagan, and Adam Gray, final year dental students at the University of Glasgow Dental School. The concept, which intends to aid dental students practice their operative skills, won the Dental Innovation Technology Ideas Award. The article examines the religious congregation associated with the Cathedral Church of St. Mungo in Glasgow, Scotland, giving particular attention to the Cathedral members' economic and social status. The economic effects caused by the removal of the University of Glasgow from the Cathedral's neighborhood are therefore documented. The importance of religion and church membership to Glasgow's middle class during the city's late 19th-century growth is also explained, along with the relationship between church officials and the Cathedral's congregation.

Due to a problem of identification, how to estimate the distinct effects of age, time period and cohort has been a controversial issue in the analysis of trends in health outcomes in epidemiology. In this study, we propose a novel approach, partial least squares (PLS) analysis, to separate the effects of age, period, and cohort. Our example for illustration is taken from the Glasgow Alumni cohort. A total of 15,322 students (11,755 men and 3,567 women) received medical screening at the Glasgow University between 1948 and 1968. The aim is to investigate the secular trends in blood pressure over 1925 and 1950 while taking into account the year of examination and age at examination. We excluded students born before 1925 or aged over 25 years at examination and those with missing values in confounders from the analyses, resulting in 12,546 and 12,516 students for analysis of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively. PLS analysis shows that both systolic and diastolic blood pressure increased with students' age, and students born later had on average lower blood pressure (SBP: -0.17 mmHg/per year [95% confidence intervals: -0.19 to -0.15] for men and -0.25 [-0.28 to -0.22] for women; DBP: -0.14 [-0.15 to -0.13] for men; -0.09 [-0.11 to -0.07] for women). PLS also shows a decreasing trend in blood pressure over the examination period. As identification is not a problem for PLS, it provides a flexible modelling strategy for age-period-cohort analysis. More emphasis is then required to clarify the substantive and conceptual issues surrounding the definitions and interpretations of age, period and cohort effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on her experience of teaching social work at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, the author, an Australian social work academic, explores the question of whether there is a role for 'foreign' social work educators and refutes the suggestion that this is inappropriate. The article presents an assessment of the Longitudinal Care Project (LCP) which is offered as a medical curriculum that evaluates the quality of patient care in the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland. It delineates the design of the instructional system, annual assessment of students, and ecological influences of LCP. Tables that depict the objectives, pedagogic overlap, suitable chronic conditions, student evaluation, activities, and development of LCP are also presented.

Objective To validate a five-item, semi-quantitative, short food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ) designed to estimate daily legume consumption over a week, against results obtained from 7-day food diaries (7-day FD). Design Participants completed a 7-day FD and at the end of this period completed the SFFQ, to indicate the number of times they ate five legume-containing dishes in the previous week and what size portion of each dish they consumed. Daily legume intake (g day−1) was calculated for both methods and participants were classified into tertiles of intake for each method. Subjects/setting Fifty-one healthy females aged 25–55 years, employed at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK between May 2003 and December 2004. Results The two methods produced a similar mean intake of legumes [SFFQ: 14.8 (95% CI: 9.9–19.8) versus 7-day FD: 14.9 (95% CI: 9.3–20.6) g day−1] and the Pearson’s correlation coefficient was 0.353 ( P = 0.038). Exact agreement within tertiles and gross misclassification were 54.9% and 9.8% respectively. The weighted kappa statistic indicated fair agreement between the two methods (κ = 0.262). Conclusions The SFFQ is an acceptable instrument for estimating legume consumption over a week and can be used to rank individuals according to the intake of this food group in similar nutrition intervention studies. While there is a wealth of literature and research on radical adult 'popular' education for social change, most of it looks forward and speculates on the educational processes best able to help the oppressed of the world overcome naive passivity and become critically aware 'subjects' of social change. Within a critical education framework, this article looks in the opposite direction, starts with activists who are already critically aware and works backwards through their life histories to search for the educational experiences, formal and informal, considered to have been most influential in their development. Two hundred and seventy-eight members of the new Scottish Socialist Party responded to a questionnaire inquiring into a range of possible educational influences leading them to become socialist activists: this article analyses the findings of that study, draws comparisons with other research in the more generalised area of 'active citizenship' and considers the implications this might have for adult educators working in the field of popular education. The article presents a Glasgow student cohort study that aimed to prove that socioeconomic circumstances experienced throughout the life course are significant predictors of adult health outcomes. Study subjects were Glasgow University students between 1948 to 1968. Results demonstrated that early life socioeconomic position determines higher risk of certain causes of death in adulthood.
