This article presents abstracts of papers presented at the seventh annual meeting of Society for Psychophysiological Research held at the Vacation Village Hotel in San Diego, California from October 19-22, 1967. One of the papers explored monocular visual evoked potentials as an index of maturity of human neonates. Another paper focused on habituation differences to tactile stimulation for waking and sleeping infants. In this paper the role of state in determining a psychological or physiological response is not disputed.

This paper explores the degree to which the Tijuana-San Diego metropolitan region functions as a transborder metropolis. It is shown that the border is quite porous, especially for work and shopping. In addition, the two metropolitan economies are much more complementary than competitive, with San Diego specializing in high-order services and the "new economy" while Tijuana primarily functions as a manufacturing center, based on maquiladora. However, much more cooperation and collaboration are needed in several areas: improving trade infrastructure; addressing the deficits in social infrastructure (especially in Tijuana); making the border crossings more user-friendly; expanding educational opportunities for Latinos in both areas; more priority to environmental problems, especially air quality and sewerage; attempting to reduce the public sector fiscal differentials between the two areas; and more attention to income distribution issues. This paper documents the initial process by which a San Diego middle school, located in a low-income and predominantly Hispanic neighborhood and repeatedly failing to meet No Child Left Behind provisions, restructured into an academically rigorous, detracked charter school. The discussion of the political experience and working relationships between the charter organizers, the school district, and its superintendent illustrate the often contentious process of community mobilization and deliberation. The involvement of faculty from the University of California San Diego and community groups as contributing partners enhances our understanding of the creation of educational reforms or the transformation of passion into practice. This paper is based on an invited address for the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers (APAHC) at the 2010 American Psychological Association (APA) Convention in San Diego, California. It is in response to the Ivan Mensh Award for Distinguished Achievement in Teaching presented to the author at the 2009 APA Convention. This article addresses two key themes in the instruction and professional development of clinical psychologists: internalization and management matters. The author asserts that these process and content topics characterize critical training ingredients in preparing students for the future practice of clinical psychology within modern academic health care settings. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate spatial resolution effects on image classification. Classification maps were generated with a maximum likelihood (ML) classifier applied to three multi-spectral bands and variance texture images. A total of eight urban land use/cover classes were obtained at six spatial resolution levels based on a series of aggregated Colour Infrared Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangle (DOQQ) subsets in urban and rural fringe areas of the San Diego metropolitan area. The classification results were compared using overall and individual classification accuracies. Classification accuracies were shown to be influenced by image spatial resolution, window size used in texture extraction and differences in spatial structure within and between categories. The more heterogeneous are the land use/cover units and the more fragmented are the landscapes, the finer the resolution required. Texture was more effective for improving the classification accuracy of land use classes at finer resolution levels. For spectrally homogeneous classes, a small window is preferable. But for spectrally heterogeneous classes, a large window size is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using both quantitative and interpretive approaches, this article provides an in-depth analysis of the changing representations of the border region in the newspapers of San Diego and Tijuana over the last decade. The major daily newspapers, the San Diego Union-Tribune, and El Mexicano, have been sampled over a 10-year period. For the Union-Tribune, photo-journalistic coverage evolves in relationship to changing political realities, though the images may tend toward a more polarized reading than the text. Initially the photographs in the Union-Tribune depict the border as boundary. By 1998 increased emphasis on regional trade is reflected in the photojournalistic coverage. Until 2000, coverage in El Mexicano is much more static, always representing the border as bridge from the perspective of Mexican official culture. Comparative analysis of the representational strategies used in both cities suggests alternatives that cross borders rather than reinforce them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This exploratory paper represents a preliminary reflection on the ways people talk about LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), elective surgery to correct refractive errors in the eye. It explores the interplay between narrative, identity, and health risk through a qualitative examination of both lay narratives involving LASIK and the ways LASIK surgeons may present the operation. Data were collected through participant observation in San Diego, California. Findings suggest that LASIK talk focuses on not only the operation's transformative nature but also on its risks. Examination of the treatment of risk in pro-LASIK narratives calls into question assumptions about individual agency and rationality that are common in present health services conceptualizations of patient-physician trust. Risk rationalization through talk of one's wisdom in selecting a surgeon may be found in relation to any elected surgical operation due to the otherwise culturally problematic nature of exposing oneself to unnecessary medical risk. This paper reviews the integration of an active teaching program into a busy treatment facility, All first and second year medical students at the University of California, San Diego take part in a series of didactic lectures and small group discussions, while third and fourth year students have the opportunity of joining a treatment team for 4 to 6 weeks. All psychiatric residents spend a minimum of 8 weeks working on the unit, and one fourth year resident is chosen to work with the staff for a year. The interactions between treatment teams and students in various stages of development help maximize enthusiasm and the commitment to the best patient care possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the extent and correlates of discrimination faced by young, accented, Hispanic males in Chicago, Illinois and San Diego, California, using the outcomes of job applications by matched pairs of Anglo and Hispanic job seekers. This is one of the first examples of audits being used in the labor market area. The audit methodology provides a powerful basis for examining discriminatory hiring practices, because it permits direct comparison of hiring outcomes for pairs of Anglo and Hispanic job seekers with similar labor market qualifications. Authors of this paper first present differences in Anglo-Hispanic success rates in filing applications, obtaining interviews, and obtaining jobs. They then focus on the correlates of differential success in obtaining interviews and in subsequent job acquisition. Results of this study strongly suggest that discrimination in hiring exists, but that one needs to learn more about the circumstances surrounding differential treatment. Greater understanding of the patterns of discriminatory treatment and the circumstances under which its likelihood increases is crucial to provide guidance on where to target civil-rights enforcement efforts.

It discusses exemplary case studies of community involvement in government, and provides an in-depth discussion of community participation in the affairs of the Engineering Traffic Division in San Diego, California. This paper evaluates the application of dispersion models to estimate near-field pollutant concentrations in two case studies. The Industrial Source Complex Short-Term Model (ISCST3) was evaluated with hexavalent chromium measurements collected within 100 m of two facilities in Barrio Logan, San Diego, CA. ISCST3 provided reasonable estimates for higher pollutant concentrations but underestimated lower concentrations. To understand the observed distribution of concentrations in Barrio Logan, a recently conducted tracer experiment was analyzed. The tracer, sulfur hexafluoride, was released at ambient temperature from an urban facility at the University of California at Riverside, and concentrations were measured within 20mof the source. Modeling results indicated that Industrial Source Complex--Plume Rise Model Enhancement and American Meteorological Society/U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regulatory Model--Plume Rise Model Enhancement overestimated high concentrations and underestimated low concentrations. A diagnostic study with a simple Gaussian dispersion model that incorporated site-specific meteorology was used to evaluate model results. This study found that incorporating lateral meandering for nonbuoyant urban plumes in Gaussian dispersion models could improve concentration estimates even when downwash is not considered. Incorporating a meandering component in ISCST3 resulted in improvements in estimating hexavalent chromium concentrations in Barrio Logan. Credible near-source concentration estimates depend on accurate characterization of emissions, onsite micrometeorology, and a method to account for lateral meandering in the near field. Three different training strategies often used for supervised classification—single pixel, seed, and block or polygon training—are compared in this paper. The range parameter of semi-variograms obtained from sample image subsets of each land-use/land-cover class was used to measure the autocorrelation level during training set selection. Eight training sets with different sizes were generated and then applied to image subsets with three multispectral bands and variance texture images in the classification of six land-use classes. The classification results using these training sets were compared at five resolution levels an d were based on six Color Infrared Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangle (DOQQ) subsets of different urban land types in urban and rural fringe areas of the San Diego metropolitan area. The performance of different training strategies is shown to be influenced by the training size, the image resolution, and the degree of autocorrelation inherent within each class. Training approaches had more impact on classification results at fine resolution levels than at coarse resolutions. For spectrally homogeneous classes, a spatially independent, single-pixel training approach is preferred. But for spatially heterogeneous classes, small block training has the advantage of readily capturing spectral and spatial information and reduces the amount of interaction time for the analyst. Interest in emotions in the workplace has accelerated rapidly over the past decade. The impetus has come from several sources and has led to bodies of research on a variety of topics. Although these bodies of work are not yet fully developed, they all show promise, and portend that the study of emotions in the workplace has the potential to add to the understanding of behavior in organizations. In the aggregate, affective experiences contribute to the affective component of attitudes such as job satisfaction, and eventually to judgment-driven behaviors such as a decision to quit a job. Affective Events Theory seems to present a very useful framework for understanding the role of affect in the workplace. The widespread and increasing interest in affect at work is documented by symposia and caucuses at the Academy of Management annual meetings since 1996, the formation by Neal Ashkanasy of the Emonet discussion group and the successful First Conference on Emotions and Organizational Life held in San Diego, California in 1998. This conference has resulted in the forthcoming publication of an edited collection based on the best papers from the conference. A second conference is scheduled to be held in August 2000 in Toronto, Ontario.
