BACKGROUND: Experimental studies have shown that disinfection byproducts (DBPs) including haloacetic acids (HAAs) can cause liver toxicity, but evidence linking this association in humans is sparse. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore the associations between HAA exposures and liver injury. METHODS: We included 922 women between December 2018 and January 2020 from the Tongji Reproductive and Environmental (TREE) cohort study in Wuhan, China. Urinary HAA concentrations including trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) and dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and serum indicators of liver function, including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) were measured. Liver injury was defined as if any of serum indicator levels were above the 90th percentile. Multivariate logistic and linear regression models were fitted to assess the associations of urinary HAA concentrations with the risk of liver injury and liver function indicators. Stratified analyses by age, body mass index (BMI), alcohol use, and passive smoking were also applied to evaluate the potential effect modifiers. RESULTS: There is little evidence of associations of urinary TCAA concentrations with liver injury risk and liver function indicators. However, urinary DCAA concentrations were associated with a higher risk of liver injury [odds ratios (OR) for 1-interquartile range (IQR) increase in natural log (ln) transformed DCAA concentrations: 1.45; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07, 1.98]. This association was observed only among nondrinkers (푝interaction =0.058). We also found that a 1-IQR increase in ln-transformed DCAA concentrations was positively associated with ALT levels (percentage change =6.06%; 95% CI: 0.48%, 11.95%) and negatively associated with AST/ALT (percentage change= -4.48%; 95% CI: -7.80%, -1.04%). In addition, urinary DCAA concentrations in relation to higher GGT levels was observed only among passive smokers (푝interaction =0.040). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that exposure to DCAA but not TCAA is associated with liver injury among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, lung cancer has become one of the most common malignant tumors in the world, which seriously threatens the life and health of mankind. Lung cancer is also the most common cancer in China. According to the latest report released by the National Cancer Center, the incidence and fatality rate of lung cancer in China rank first among malignant tumors, which has brought great disease burden to the Chinese. In this paper, using ethyl acetoacetate as the starting material, eight benzo[d]imidazolium[2,1-b]thiazole target compounds containing chromone were synthesized in five steps through alpha halogenation, cyclization, hydrolysis, condensation and cyclization reaction. MTT assay was used to evaluate the in vitro inhibitory activity of the target compounds on A549 and H2228 cancer cells. The IC50 values of the target compounds to A549 and H2228 cell lines ranged from 17.63 to 369.09 μmol/L. Some target compounds have moderate anti-tumor activity in vitro, which could be used to prepare related anti-tumor drugs for lung cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sex pheromones serve a critical role in Lepidopterans finding mates. Male moths perceive and react to sex pheromones emitted by conspecific females through a delicate pheromone communication system. Pheromone receptors (PRs) are the key sensory elements at the beginning of that process. The codling moth (Cydia pomnonella) is an important pome fruit pest globally and a serious invasive species in China. Pheromone‐based techniques have been used successfully in monitoring and controlling this species. We conducted ribonucleic acid sequencing analysis of the codling moth antennal transcriptome and identified 66 odorant receptors (ORs) in a population from Xinjiang province, China, of which 14 were PRs, including two novel PRs (CpomOR2e and CpomOR73). Four PRs that contain full‐length open reading frames (CpomOR1, OR2a, OR5, OR7) and four PRs with ligands that have not been reported previously (CpomOR1, OR2a, OR5, OR7) were selected to deorphanize in the heterologous Xenopus oocyte expression system. Specifically, we found that CpomOR2a and CpomOR5 responded to (E,E)‐8, 10‐dodecadien‐1‐yl acetate (codlemone acetate). Furthermore, CpomOR5 (EC50 = 1.379 × 10−8 mol/L) was much more sensitive to codlemone acetate than CpomOR2a (EC50 = 1.663 × 10−6 mol/L). Since codlemone acetate is an important component of C. pomonella sex pheromone, our results improve the current understanding of pheromone communication in codling moths and will be helpful for the development of pest management strategies. Aim: To explore the cross‐level relationships between group organisational citizenship behaviour, emotional intelligence, work engagement and nurse–patient relationship. Background: Group‐level factors influencing nurse–patient relationship are seldom studied. Method: A cross‐sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,246 nurses from 55 nursing groups in a 3A hospital in China, and the data were analysed by multilevel analysis. Results: Group organisational citizenship behaviour is positively related to nurse–patient relationship with work engagement as a mediator. Emotional intelligence moderates the relationship between group organisational citizenship behaviour and nurse–patient relationship. Specifically, high emotional intelligence reduces the positive impact of group organisational citizenship behaviour on nurse–patient relationship. Conclusions: This study provides new insights into the influencing factors of nurse–patient relationship based on the social information processing theory. In groups with high group organisational citizenship, positive work engagement and emotional intelligence, nurses are more likely to deliver better performance in patient care, leading to better nurse–patient relationships. Implications for Nursing Management: This study suggests that influencing factors at both group and individual levels should be considered while establishing nurse–patient relationships. In China, especially in countries with state-owned land use rights, the loss of urban bird diversity due to rapid urbanisation can't be contained or ameliorated by equitably weighing the ecological and economic values of land. Climate change could further threaten urban bird biodiversity and ultimately lead to a "tragedy of the commons". The Beijing Ecological Cultivation Area (BECA) is one such area that has suffered from low eco-efficiency due to climate change and chaotic management. There is a need to find more effective solutions for urban bird conservation to reduce the negative impacts of rapid urbanisation while avoiding wasting more conservation costs. For this purpose, the protection priorities for BECA based on 4 global future climate models (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5) for the years 2041–2060, 56 species of local resident birds in the "Beijing Terrestrial Wildlife - Birds" were used as study subjects, which were identified through systematic conservation planning (scp) with combinatorial modelling (MaxEnt-Marxan). In addition, three scenarios were innovatively developed in Marxan with maximum respect for the original land use types. The eco-efficiency and eco-corridor of these three scenarios were compared and identified through ArcGis. The results of the survey show that 'Comprehensive Conservation' has the largest mean distribution area, with the results for RCP 2.6–8.5 being: 52.34%; 65.25%; 48.34%; and 45.42%. It had the highest spatial continuity, the lowest fragmentation, and the highest conservation efficiency. Moreover, We recommend a phased implementation of the conservation plans and and suggest planning options for three landform types: High-altitude mountain; Medium or Low-altitude shallow mountainous; and Water conservation areas. It is important to establish ecological corridors from the Huairou district's northern part to the Yanqing district's northeastern part and beyond. This paper quantifies the land costs, ecological values and human impact factors of the planning area in a comprehensive climate context with the theme of conserving urban bird diversity. BACKGROUND: Experimental studies show that disinfection byproducts (DBPs) can inhibit oocyte maturation, decrease fertilization capacity, and impair embryo development, but human evidence is lacking. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the associations between exposure to drinking water DBPs and in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. METHODS: The study included 1,048 women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment between December 2018 and January 2020 from a prospective cohort study, the Tongji Reproductive and Environmental study in Wuhan, China. Exposure to DBPs was assessed by dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) in up to four urine samples, which were collected on the day of both enrollment and oocyte retrieval. Multivariable generalized linear mixed models, accounting for multiple IVF cycles per woman, were applied to evaluate the associations between urinary biomarkers of DBP exposures and IVF outcomes. Stratified analyses were used to explore the potential effect modifiers. RESULTS: The included 1,048 women underwent 1,136 IVF cycles, with 960 (91.6%), 84 (8.0%), and 4 (0.4%) women contributing one cycle, two cycles, and three cycles, respectively. We found that elevated quartiles of urinary DCAA and TCAA concentrations were associated with reduced numbers of total oocytes and metaphase II oocytes and that urinary DCAA concentrations with a lower proportion of best-quality embryos (all 푝 for trends<0.05). Moreover, elevated quartiles of urinary DCAA concentrations were associated with decreased proportions of successful implantation, clinical pregnancy, and live birth (14%, 15%, and 15% decreases in adjusted means comparing the extreme quartiles, respectively; all 푝 for trends<0.05). Stratification analyses showed that the inverse associations of urinary TCAA concentrations with multiple IVF outcomes were stronger among women ≥30 y of age (푝 for interactions<0.05). DISCUSSION: Exposure to drinking water DBPs was inversely associated with some IVF outcomes among women undergoing ART treatment. Further study is necessary to confirm our findings. Introduction: Metabolomic signatures of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Tibetan Chinese population, a group with high diabetes burden, remain largely unclear. Identifying the serum metabolite profile of Tibetan T2DM (T-T2DM) individuals may provide novel insights into early T2DM diagnosis and intervention. Methods: Hence, we conducted untargeted metabolomics analysis of plasma samples from a retrospective cohort study with 100 healthy controls and 100 T-T2DM patients by using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Results: The T-T2DM group had significant metabolic alterations that are distinct from known diabetes risk indicators, such as body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, and glycosylated hemoglobin levels. The optimal metabolite panels for predicting T-T2DM were selected using a tenfold cross-validation random forest classification model. Compared with the clinical features, the metabolite prediction model provided a better predictive value. We also analyzed the correlation of metabolites with clinical indices and found 10 metabolites that were independently predictive of T-T2DM. Conclusion: By using the metabolites identified in this study, we may provide stable and accurate biomarkers for early T-T2DM warning and diagnosis. Purpose: To investigate the characteristics of intracranial infection (ICI) in patients after neurosurgery, and the influence of rational use of antibiotics. Methods: The medical records of 127 patients with neurosurgery-related ICI who were admitted into Jincheng People's Hospital, Jincheng, Shanxi, China from April 2019 to April 2022 were selected. The results of bacterial culture and drug susceptibility tests of cerebrospinal fluid were collected, and the profile of bacteria in the cerebrospinal fluid specimens of patients and the different bacterial compositions were analyzed. Results: A total of 148 strains of pathogenic bacteria were cultured and isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid samples of 127 patients, out of which 91 strains of Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 61.49 %, and 57 strains of Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 38.51 %. The Gram-positive bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, and hemolytic Staphylococcus, while the Gram-negative bacteria comprised the pathogenic bacteria Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The Gram-positive bacteria were more sensitive to rifampicin (91.21 %), vancomycin (95.60 %), and linezolid (97.80 %), while the Gram-negative bacteria were more sensitive to imipenem (84.21 %), meropenem (75.44 %) and amikacin (77.19 %). Conclusion: Gram-positive bacteria are the main pathogenic bacteria implicated in ICI after neurosurgery in patients. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an 8‐week electronic couple‐based psychosocial support platform (WeChat) for gynaecological cancer. Design: Randomised controlled trial. Setting: Oncology hospital in Shaanxi Province, China. Participants: A total of 98 dyads of women with gynaecological cancer and their intimate male partners were included. Methods: Couple dyads were randomly allocated to either the WeChat couple‐based psychosocial support or to a control group receiving eight WeChat articles on general education content related to diet and exercise. Main outcome measures: The primary outcome was sexual function assessed with the Female Sexual Function Index. The secondary outcomes of relationship satisfaction and quality of life were assessed with the Chinese version of Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy‐General and The World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF. These outcomes were assessed before randomisation, and immediately and 3 months after the intervention. Results: The study showed that the sexual function of women participants in the intervention group did not reach a significant level compared with the control group. Relationship satisfaction in the intervention programme improved significantly (adjusted mean difference 4.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.0–7.4; p = 0.001) and quality of life (QoL 6.9, 95% CI 0.5–13.3; p = 0.035) 3 months after the intervention in women with gynaecological cancer. The intervention programme also showed significant positive effects on optimising relationship satisfaction (adjuste mean difference 3.0, 95% CI 0.3–5.7; p = 0.027) of male partners. Conclusions: The results provided additional knowledge and an evidence base for the application of the support programme to improve relationship satisfaction and QoL among couples living with gynaecological cancer. Insect herbivory on plant leaves is a major determinant of plant fitness, especially the growth and survival of tree seedlings in forests. Leaf size is believed to significantly affect the intensity of herbivory. Studies often assume the relationship between leaf size and herbivory to be monotonic; however, this relationship is influenced by many factors—the magnitude and direction of which are different—indicating a complex non-monotonic pattern. In this study, we investigated the herbivory of 5754 leaves of 422 seedlings belonging to 42 subtropical tree species over two seasons in southwest China. The effects of leaf size on herbivory differed among seasons; a hump-shaped pattern was detected in December, while a pattern of monotonic increase was detected in September. A variety of patterns, including complex non-monotonic hump-shaped patterns, as well as patterns indicating monotonic decrease and increase existed among species, although most species displayed no significant correlations. The relationship between leaf size and insect herbivory did not follow a constant rule, but differed across species and seasons, indicating that the effects of leaf size on the foraging preferences of insect herbivores may be contingent on both external (e.g., temperature) and intrinsic (e.g., other leaf traits) factors. Therefore, a one-off survey focusing on few species may not provide complete understanding of the overall pattern of the effect of leaf size on herbivory. Background: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of novel plasma radio frequency generator and its single-use polypectomy snares for endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of gastrointestinal (GI) polyps. Methods: A total of 217 patients with 413 GI polyps were recruited from four centers in China. Patients were assigned to experimental or control groups using a central randomization method. The experimental group used the novel plasma radio frequency generator and its matched single-use polypectomy snares (Neowing, Shanghai), while the control group used the high-frequency electrosurgical unit (Erbe, Germany) and disposable electrosurgical snares (Olympus, Japan). The primary endpoint was the en bloc resection rate, and the non-inferiority margin was set at 10%. Secondary endpoint included operation time, coagulation success rate, intraoperative and postoperative bleeding rate, and perforation rate. Results: The en bloc resection rate was 97.20% (104/107) in the experimental group and 95.45% (105/110) in the control group (P = 0.496). The operation time was 29.14 ± 20.21 min in the experimental group and 30.26 ± 18.74 min in the control group (P = 0.671). The average removal time of a single polyp in the experimental group was 7.52 ± 4.45 min, which was slightly shorter than that in the control group 8.90 ± 6.67 min, with no statistical difference (P = 0.076). The intraoperative bleeding rates of the experimental group and control group were 8.41% (9/107) and 10.00% (11/110), respectively (P = 0.686). No intraoperative perforation occurred in either group. The postoperative bleeding rates of the experimental group and the control group were 1.87% (2/107) and 4.55% (5/110), respectively (P = 0.465). No postoperative perforation occurred in the experimental group (0/107), while one case of delayed perforation occurred in the control group (1/110, 0.91%). There was no statistical difference between the two groups. Conclusions: Endoscopic mucosal resection of GI polyps with the novel plasma radio frequency generator is safe and effective, and non-inferior to the conventional high-frequency electrosurgical system. Autophagy plays an important role in the infectious processes of diverse pathogens. For instance, cellular autophagy could be harnessed by viruses to facilitate replication. However, it is still uncertain about the interplay of autophagy and swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) in cells. In this study, we reported that SADS-CoV infection could induce a complete autophagy process both in vitro and in vivo, and an inhibition of autophagy significantly decreased SADS-CoV production, thus suggesting that autophagy facilitated the replication of SADS-CoV. We found that ER stress and its downstream IRE1 pathway were indispensable in the processes of SADS-CoV-induced autophagy. We also demonstrated that IRE1-JNK-Beclin 1 signaling pathway, neither PERK-EIF2S1 nor ATF6 pathways, was essential during SADS-CoV-induced autophagy. Importantly, our work provided the first evidence that expression of SADS-CoV PLP2-TM protein induced autophagy through the IRE1-JNK-Beclin 1 signaling pathway. Furthermore, the interaction of viral PLP2-TMF451-L490 domain and substrate-binding domain of GRP78 was identified to activate the IRE1-JNK-Beclin 1 signaling pathway, and thus resulting in autophagy, and in turn, enhancing SADS-CoV replication. Collectively, these results not only showed that autophagy promoted SADS-CoV replication in cultured cells, but also revealed that the molecular mechanism underlying SADS-CoV-induced autophagy in cells. Author summary: SADS-CoV, a novel bat-origin pathogen belonging to the family Alphacoronavirus, was confirmed to be the aetiological agent that caused mass death of piglets in southern China in 2017. Strikingly, since the outbreak of SADS-CoV, multiple studies have highlighted the risk of cross-species transmission due to its broad cell tropism. A better understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms is expected to result in a more specific SADS-CoV prevention and control measures. As yet, the pathogenic mechanisms of SADS-CoV have so far not been characterized well. Here, we found that SADS-CoV infection induced a complete autophagy process in vitro and in vivo to facilitate virus propagation. Furthermore, it's indicated that ER stress and IRE1 pathway played indispensable functions in SADS-CoV-induced autophagy. Notably, we have provided first evidence that SADS-CoV PLP2-TMF451-L490 domain induced autophagy by interacting with substrate-binding domain of GRP78 to activate the IRE1-JNK-Beclin 1 signaling pathway. The article presents a study that determines the prevalence of contact sensitization to textile dyes in a non-patient population and in eczema patients patch tested in a tertiary hospital in Beijing, China. The study shows lower total positivity rate for patch testing with the baseline series of allergens in volunteers than that for patients. It found no significant difference in the prevalence of contact sensitization to any allergens between volunters and patients.

The article presents a study to find the pervasiveness of contact sensitization in university students in Beijing and to find the link in the prevalence of delayed hypersensitivity between eczema patients and a non-patient population. Volunteers from Peking University were recruited by stating that healthy volunteers were needed to test for the frequency of allergic reactions to common environmental allergens. Two hundred and five volunteers were patch tested.

In this study, based on the engineering background of the No. 8222 working face of the Tashan coal mine in Shanxi Province, China, true triaxial experiments were carried out on Geotechnical Consulting and Testing Systems rock mechanics testing machine using cubic coal samples, and the numerical simulation was conducted through the FLAC3D software. Moreover, the stress evolution law of different layers of extra-thick coal seams and the failure mechanism of top coal in the fully mechanized caving were investigated, and the failure structure model of top coal was established. Simple Summary: In this study, a case of infection with RVC was identified and the full-length genome of RVC in China was sequenced. A natural recombination event was observed in the RVC genome. Collectively, our data suggest that the RVC exists in China and it can be mixed with other diarrhea viruses, which brings new challenges to the prevention and control of diarrhea disease in pigs. Our data provide a new insight into the evolution of the rotavirus. Swine enteric disease is the predominant cause of morbidity and mortality, and viral species involved in swine enteric disease include rotaviruses and coronaviruses, among others. Awareness of the circulating porcine rotavirus group C (PoRVC) in pig herds is critical to evaluate the potential impact of infection. At present, due to the lack of disease awareness and molecular diagnostic means, the research on RVC infection in China is not well-studied. In this study, diarrhea samples collected from pig farms were detected positive for RVC by PCR, and the full-length RVC was not previously reported for Chinese pig farms. This rotavirus strain was designated as RVC/Pig/CHN/JS02/2018/G6P6. A natural recombination event was observed with breakpoints at nucleotides (nt) 2509 to 2748 of the VP2 gene. Phylogenetic analysis based on nsp1 revealed that a new branch A10 formed. Collectively, our data suggest a potentially novel gene recombination event of RVC in the VP2 gene. In recent years, increasing numbers of cases of acute gastroenteritis caused by Group A rotavirus (RVA) G12 strains have been reported in humans from many countries around the world, but G12 RVA detection in animals is currently less reported. Pigs are an important animal reservoir of zoonotic RVs and a mixing vessel for RVs. In 2020, RVA infection cases in piglets increased in China, which attracted more attention. During an epidemiological survey, a new type of porcine G12P[7] strain (CN127) was detected in pig farms across several provinces. Complete genome analyses revealed that strain CN127 possessed a Wa‐like backbone with a genotype constellation of G12‐P[7]‐I1‐C1‐M1‐R1‐A8‐N1‐T1‐E1‐H1. The A8 genotype is indicative of its porcine rotavirus origin. Sequence identities and phylogenetic analyses showed that the VP2, VP4, NSP1, NSP4 and NSP5 genes were most closely related to those of porcine rotaviruses, but the VP1, VP6, VP7 and NSP2‐3 genes were most closely related to those of human rotaviruses. CN127 likely emerged due to genetic reassortment between porcine and human rotavirus. In vivo experiments showed that CN127 infection caused gastrointestinal tract lesions in piglets and histopathological changes in the lung, liver and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs). In the small intestine, RVA antigen was detected in the duodenum and jejunum but not in the ileum. In the extra‐intestinal tissues, RVA antigen was detected in the lung but not in the MLNs. Viral RNA was detected in the intestinal and extra‐intestinal tissues as well as blood. This study reveals that RVA G12P[7] may become an epidemic strain in China and also provides further evidence that cocirculating human and porcine strains could produce new genotype rotaviruses with high virulence in piglets. Aims and objectives: To assess the prevalence and associated factors of depression and anxiety among caregivers of patients with atrial fibrillation. Background: Depression and anxiety are common in caregivers of patients with cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure and coronary artery disease. However, studies about depression and anxiety among caregivers of patients with atrial fibrillation are limited. Design: Cross‐sectional study. Methods: We enrolled 465 dyads of patients with atrial fibrillation and their primary family caregivers from Beijing Anzhen Hospital between September 2020 and March 2021. The patient–caregiver dyads were excluded if primary family caregivers had previous mental disorders before the patient diagnosis of atrial fibrillation. Depression and anxiety of patients and caregivers were measured by Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder‐7 scale. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess factors associated with depression and anxiety of caregivers. STROBE guidelines were followed to report this study. Results: The prevalence of caregiver depression (Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 score ≥5) and anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder‐7 score ≥5) was 14.0% and 13.5% respectively. Caregiver number of comorbidities ≥2 and patient depression were significantly associated with caregiver depression. Caregiver age ≥65 years, caregiver female sex and patient anxiety were predictors of caregiver anxiety. Conclusions: Depression and anxiety are common in caregivers of patients with AF. Better management of caregiver mental problems and associated factors may benefit both patients and caregivers. Relevance to clinical practice: Clinicians and nurses should pay more attention to depression and anxiety in caregivers of patients with atrial fibrillation, and provide support to caregivers in most need. Background: Extranodal natural killer T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL), nasal type, is a rare and aggressive malignancy that occurs predominantly in Asian and Latin American populations. Although Epstein-Barr virus infection is a known risk factor, other risk factors and the pathogenesis of NKTCL are not well understood. We aimed to identify common genetic variants affecting individual risk of NKTCL.Methods: We did a genome-wide association study of 189 patients with extranodal NKTCL, nasal type (WHO classification criteria; cases) and 957 controls from Guangdong province, southern China. We validated our findings in four independent case-control series, including 75 cases from Guangdong province and 296 controls from Hong Kong, 65 cases and 983 controls from Guangdong province, 125 cases and 1110 controls from Beijing (northern China), and 60 cases and 2476 controls from Singapore. We used imputation and conditional logistic regression analyses to fine-map the associations. We also did a meta-analysis of the replication series and of the entire dataset.Findings: Associations exceeding the genome-wide significance threshold (p<5 × 10(-8)) were seen at 51 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) mapping to the class II MHC region on chromosome 6, with rs9277378 (located in HLA-DPB1) having the strongest association with NKTCL susceptibility (p=4·21 × 10(-19), odds ratio [OR] 1·84 [95% CI 1·61-2·11] in meta-analysis of entire dataset). Imputation-based fine-mapping across the class II MHC region suggests that four aminoacid residues (Gly84-Gly85-Pro86-Met87) in near-complete linkage disequilibrium at the edge of the peptide-binding groove of HLA-DPB1 could account for most of the association between the rs9277378*A risk allele and NKTCL susceptibility (OR 2·38, p value for haplotype 2·32 × 10(-14)). This association is distinct from MHC associations with Epstein-Barr virus infection.Interpretation: To our knowledge, this is the first time that a genetic variant conferring an NKTCL risk is noted at genome-wide significance. In this work, a rapid detection method using solid sampling electrothermal vaporization atomic absorption spectrometry (SS-ETV-AAS) was established for cadmium in chocolate. The instrumental system includes a solid sampling ETV unit, a catalytic pyrolysis furnace, an AAS detector, and a gas supply system with only an air pump and a hydrogen generator. Herein, MgO material with 1.0–1.5 mm particle size was first employed to replace the kaolin filler previously used to further shorten the peak width and to thereby improve the sensitivity. With 350 mL/min of air, a chocolate sample was heated for 25 s from 435 to 464 °C to remove water and organic matrices; then, after supplying 240 mL/min hydrogen and turning down air to 120 mL/min, a N2/H2 mixture gas was formed to accelerate Cd vaporization from chocolate residue under 465 to 765 °C. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit (LOD) was obviously lowered to 70 pg/g (vs. previous 150 pg/g) with R2 > 0.999; the relative standard deviations (RSD) of repeated measurements for real chocolate samples ranged from 1.5% to 6.4%, indicating a favorable precision; and the Cd recoveries were in the range of 93–107%, proving a satisfied accuracy. Thus, the total analysis time is less than 3 min without the sample digestion process. Thereafter, 78 chocolate samples with different brands from 9 producing countries in China market were collected and measured by this proposed method. Based on the measured Cd concentrations, a dietary exposure assessment was performed for Chinese residents, and the target hazard quotient (THQ) values are all less than 1, proving no significant health risk from intaking chocolate cadmium for Chinese residents. Some Chinese researchers still think that reactions are induced by impurities or additives in the preparations. Little is known about the allergenicity of the herbs themselves. Sanjieling capsule and Huoxuexiaoyan pill are Chinese herbal medicines claimed to invigorate blood circulation, resolve hard lumps.

Trichomonascaceae is the largest family of ascomycetous yeast in the order Saccharomycetales. In spite of the extensive body of research on Trichomonascaceae in China, there remain new species to be discovered. Here, we describe four new species isolated from several rotting wood samples from Henan Province, Central China. Phylogenetic analysis of a combined ITS and nrLSU dataset with morphological studies revealed four new species in the Trichomonascaceae: Diddensiella luoyangensis, Sugiyamaella cylindrica, Su. robnettiae, and Zygoascus detingensis. Clustering in the Diddensiella clade, D. luoyangensis’ closest neighbour was D. transvaalensis. Meanwhile, Su. cylindrica clustered in the Sugiyamaella clade closest to Su. marilandica and Su. qingdaonensis. Also clustering in the Sugiyamaella clade, Su. robnettiae was most closely related to Su. chuxiongensis. Finally, Z. detingensis occupied a distinct and separated basal branch from the other species of the genus Zygoascus. These results indicate a high species diversity of Trichomonascaceae. Kodamaea includes a growing number of interesting yeasts of the family Debaryomycetacae that are widely distributed in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of different continents. During recent yeast collections in Henan and Yunnan Province in China, several isolates of Kodamaea were obtained from rotting wood, all of which represent undescribed taxa. Based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses (ITS and LSU rDNA), three new species are proposed: K. hongheensis f.a., sp. nov., K. ovata f.a., sp. nov. and K. yamadae f.a., sp. nov. In addition, sixteen Candida species, which are members of the Kodamaea clade based on phylogenetic analysis, are transferred to Kodamaea as new combinations. A severe egg-drop disease caused by the infection of a novel duck flavivirus outbroke successively in many provinces in southeastern China since 2010. It was identified as a duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) and named by Chinese Association of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine in the first symposium on waterfowl disease control, which was presumed to be a mosquito-borne flavivirus of the Ntaya virus subgroup in the genus Flavivirus, family Flaviviridae. Currently, a large number of studies have been conducted on the epidemiology, clinical symptoms and pathological changes, etiology, and rapid diagnoses of the virus. The disease remains a constant threat to the duck industry. In order to provide reference for subsequent in-depth study, in this paper, research progress on the disease was summarized based on previous studies. Background Visual inspection for tongue analysis is a diagnostic method in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Owing to the variations in tongue features, such as color, texture, coating, and shape, it is difficult to precisely extract the tongue region in images. This study aims to quantitatively evaluate tongue diagnosis via automatic tongue segmentation. Methods Experiments were conducted using a clinical image dataset provided by the Laboratory of Traditional Medical Syndromes, Shanghai University of TCM. First, a clinical tongue image was refined by a saliency window. Second, we initialized the tongue area as the upper binary part and lower level set matrix. Third, a double geo-vector flow (DGF) was proposed to detect the tongue edge and segment the tongue region in the image, such that the geodesic flow was evaluated in the lower part, and the geo-gradient vector flow was evaluated in the upper part. Results The performance of the DGF was evaluated using 100 images. The DGF exhibited better results compared with other representative studies, with its true-positive volume fraction reaching 98.5%, its false-positive volume fraction being 1.51%, and its false-negative volume fraction being 1.42%. The errors between the proposed automatic segmentation results and manual contours were 0.29 and 1.43% in terms of the standard boundary error metrics of Hausdorff distance and mean distance, respectively. Conclusions By analyzing the time complexity of the DGF and evaluating its performance via standard boundary and area error metrics, we have shown both efficiency and effectiveness of the DGF for automatic tongue image segmentation. Yamadazyma is one of the largest genera in the family Debaryomycetaceae (Saccharomycetales, Saccharomycetes) with species mainly found in rotting wood, insects and their resulting frass, but also recovered from flowers, leaves, fruits, tree bark, mushrooms, sea water, minerals, and the atmosphere. In the present study, several strains obtained from rotting wood in Henan and Yunnan Provinces of China were isolated. Based on morphology and a molecular phylogeny of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rDNA, these strains were identified as three new species: Yamadazyma luoyangensis, Y. ovata and Y. paraaseri; and three previously described species, Y. insectorum, Y. akitaensis, and Y. olivae. The three new species are illustrated and their morphology and phylogenetic relationships with other Yamadazyma species are discussed. This study applied the C-band vertically pointing radar with frequency-modulation continuous-wave technology to obtain the continuous observation data of four shallow and two deep snow events during the winter of 2015-2016 in the midlatitudes of China. Generating cells (GCs) were found near the echo tops in every event. The ice particle number concentration (N), ice water content (IWC), and median mass diameter (Dm) retrieved from radar Doppler spectra were used to analyze the microphysical properties in the snow clouds. The clouds were divided into upper GC and lower stratiform (St) regions according to their vertical structure. The fall streaks (FSs) associated with GCs were embedded in the St regions. In the GC regions, the N values in shallow events were smaller compared with those in deep events, and Dm and IWC were larger. In the St regions, N decreased compared with that in the GC regions, and Dm and IWC increased, implying the existence of aggregation and deposition growth. The growth of particle size and mass mainly occurred in the St regions. The increases of N were usually observed near -5°C accompanied by bimodal Doppler spectra, which might be caused by ice multiplication. The average ratios of the median N, Dm, and IWC inside GCs to those outside GCs were 2, 1.3, and 2.5, respectively, for shallow events, with 1.7, 1.2, and 2.3, respectively, for deep events. These values were basically the same as those for the FSs, implying the importance of GCs to the enhanced ice growth subsequently found in FSs. The larger values of N, Dm, and IWC inside GCs could be related to the upward air motions inside GCs. The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is an economically important aquaculture species in China. In this study, we developed and evaluated simple sequence repeat markers from expressed sequence tags of E. sinensis. Among the 40 wild E. sinensis individuals tested, 16 loci were polymorphic. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to ten. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.0667 to 0.9667, whereas the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.0661 to 0.9051. Background Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens–Johnson Syndrome (SJS) are drug-induced diseases with no well-established treatments. The application of corticosteroid therapy is controversial. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy is emerging as a promising new method for the treatment of these two diseases. The efficacy of combination therapy of IVIG and corticosteroid in the treatment of TEN/SJS has seldom been reported. Methods Sixty-five consecutive patients with either TEN or SJS, admitted over a 14-year period from January 1993 to October 2007, were treated with corticosteroid and analyzed retrospectively using SCORTEN, a severity-of-illness scoring system for TEN/SJS prognosis, to evaluate efficacy. For patients admitted after January 2001, additional therapy with a dose of 0.4 g/kg/day of IVIG for 5 days was applied. Results In the 45 patients with TEN treated without IVIG, 8.63 patients were expected to die based on the SCORTEN system, but 10 deaths were observed. Standardized mortality ratio (SMR) analysis [(Σobserved deaths/Σexpected deaths) × 100] suggested that patients with TEN treated with systemic corticosteroid were 16% more likely to die than those treated with routine therapy (SMR = 1.16; 95% confidence interval, 0.56–2.13). In the further study of combination therapy, 12 patients with TEN and eight patients with SJS were admitted. There were two deaths in the TEN group and one death in the SJS group, with 3.51 deaths expected on the basis of the SCORTEN system. SMR analysis showed that combination therapy had a tendency to reduce the mortality rate of TEN (SMR = 0.85; 95% confidence interval, 0.18–2.50). Nevertheless, in both the TEN and SJS groups, the difference in mortality rate between the two therapies was not statistically significant ( P = 0.651 and P = 1, respectively). In patients with TEN, combination therapy also reduced significantly the time of arrested progression ( P = 0.019) and the total hospitalization time ( P = 0.043), but could not reduce the time to the tapering of corticosteroid ( P = 0.96). In SJS patients, the times of arrested progression and hospitalization were also reduced significantly ( P = 0.019 and P = 0.0475, respectively). Likewise, the time to the tapering of corticosteroid was not reduced ( P = 0.122). Conclusion Combination therapy with corticosteroid and IVIG exhibited a tendency to reduce the mortality rate in comparison with the solo administration of corticosteroid. The decrease in the mortality rate, however, was not statistically significant. Combination therapy also arrested progression earlier and decreased the hospitalization time, meaning that the total dose of corticosteroid may be reduced. Urban heat islands (UHI) are a common phenomenon in most cities, and one of the most effective ways to mitigate UHI negative effects is with urban vegetation. This paper uses the mono-window algorithm for retrieving land surface temperature (LST) based on remote-sensing data, and simulates thermal effects in five situations, using different amounts of urban vegetation within the built-up area of Beijing. Our analyses indicated that the computed Near Surface Air Temperature (NSAT) of the current situation (25 July 2005) was 295.86 K at 02:47 which is comparable to the real observed mean NSAT (296 K) at that time. When all urban vegetation was removed, the mean LST and NSAT increased by 1.95 K and 0.92 K compared to the current situation. In addition, the mean NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) increased to 0.22-0.42, while the mean NSAT decreased to 294.98-293.08 K, which is close to a temperature comfortable to humans (295-293 K) in that area. Our work should provide information for the government of Beijing and the public on the importance of urban vegetation in counteracting effects of UHI during urban land use and management projects. Peanut allergens have not been studied in China. This study aimed to investigate (1) whether there are differences in the relative amounts of major peanut allergens between the Chinese peanut varieties and the American, and (2) the effect of cooking methods on peanut allergenicity. The allergenic property of raw peanuts and peanut preparations was assessed by immunoblotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relative contents of the major peanut allergens were quantified by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis densitometry. For results, Ara h 1 and Ara h 3 were major peanut allergens in China. The amounts of Ara h 1 and Ara h 3 in peanut varieties differ significantly and were both lower than the American varieties. The immunoglobulin E (IgE)-binding ability of different processed peanuts to IgE was not significantly different. Therefore, peanut varieties may induce different amounts of allergens. The relative lower contents of Ara h 1 and Ara h 3 may lead to the lower prevalence of peanut allergy. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Because of its nutritional and rheological properties, peanut is used in a wide range of different foods, and peanut allergy represents an important health problem. It is essential to identify the compounds of peanut allergens and to study their characteristics in order to explore approaches for the therapies and to breed the nonallergenic peanut seed. The aim of this study was to assess brown rust resistance in 60 new sugarcane varieties bred by the China Sugarcane System in recent years and in 34 major varieties cultivated in sugarcane growing areas in China. The resistance of these sugarcane varieties to brown rust was investigated in the field, and molecular markers were used to detect the brown rust-resistance gene Bru1. The results of the field survey showed that 66 (70.21%) of the 94 sugarcane varieties were highly resistant to moderately resistant, and 28 (29.79%) were susceptible to highly susceptible. The Bru1 gene was detected in 54 (57.45%) of the 94 sugarcane varieties. Seven highly resistant varieties and five resistant varieties did not carry Bru1, suggesting that they carry other genes associated with brown rust resistance. Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is a pathogen of infectious reproductive disease, which can cause stillbirth, mummification, embryo death, and infertility (SMEDI) syndrome in pigs. The objective of this study was to gain new insights into the evolution and phylogeny of the PPV1 genome. In this study, we isolated two new PPV1 (HLJ202108-Y and SDLC202109) from northern China and sequenced their whole genomes. The new isolates were found to have three amino acid substitutions (K195R, K562R, and S578P) in nonstructural protein 1. The VP2 amino acid site contained nine nonsynonymous substitutions, including six substitutions of the Kresse strain corresponding to the NADL-2 strain and three substitutions of A414S, S436T, and N555K. Genetic evolution analysis was conducted on 107 reference sequences available in the GenBank database, and 4–5 PPV1 taxa were defined. The new isolates were in the same phylogenetic cluster as strain 27a. The changes in the cluster, specifically marker amino acids, and their potential role in enhancing pathogenicity are discussed in this study. Furthermore, the evolutionary tree map results showed that the strains in China were evolving in two directions: one was becoming increasingly similar to early NADL-2 strains, while the other was evolving toward 27a-like strains. We also compared the proliferation ability of the isolated strains in susceptible cells by analyzing the multistep growth curves. The results showed that the virulence titer of the mutant strain was high. Background and Objectives: Diet is a modifiable risk factor of T2DM with the potential to improve the patients' quality of life. The diet-diabetes relationship has received considerable attention in past decades. This study describes dietary intake of nutrients in a matched case-control study of adults with and without T2DM.Methods and Study Design: Dietary nutrient intake was evaluated by semi-quantitative FFQ and biochemical indexes were studied in enrolled 207 participants with T2DM (diabetes group) and 215 healthy participants (control group). The t-test of two independent-sample and chi-square test were used to compare data by age and other characters. Exploratory factor analysis was used for dietary pattern analysis. Logistic regression analysis were used to test the effect of different dietary patterns and dietary intakes on the risk of T2DM.Results: The blood glucose, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the diabetes group (p<0.05). Three major dietary patterns were identified, "High-salt and high-fat", "Traditional Chinese" and "Western" dietary patterns. With or without adjustment, highest quintile of high-salt and high-fat dietary pattern showed a significantly higher risk of T2DM than the lowest quintile. (OR=2.08, 95%CI: 1.24, 3.49, OR=1.70, 95%CI: 0.98, 2.54, OR=1.67, 95%CI: 0.97, 2.51).Conclusions: Individuals with a high-fat and high-salt dietary pattern had an increased risk of T2DM. Spathaspora is an important genus of d-xylose-fermenting yeasts that are poorly studied in China. During recent yeast collections in Yunnan Province in China, 13 isolates of Spathaspora were obtained from rotting wood and all represent undescribed taxa. Based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses (ITS and nuc 28S), five new species are proposed: Spathaspora elongata, Sp. mengyangensis, Sp. jiuxiensis, Sp. parajiuxiensis and Sp. rosae. Our results indicate a high species diversity of Spathaspora waiting to be discovered in rotting wood from tropical and subtropical southwest China. In addition, the two Candida species, C. jeffriesii and C. materiae, which are members of the Spathaspora clade based on phylogeny, are transferred to Spathaspora as new combinations. Objective: This study aims to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of macrosomia and LGA (large for gestational age) in non-GDM (gestational diabetes mellitus) pregnant women in Fuyang, Anhui Province of China.Methods: A large population-based cohort study was conducted among non-GDM pregnant women aged 18-45 years. Maternal sociodemographic data prior to pregnancy were collected using interviewer-administered standardized questionnaire. Maternal obstetrical delivery records and newborn hospital records were extracted from antenatal care booklets and hospital discharge abstracts. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predictors of macrosomia and LGA.Results: The incidence of macrosomia and LGA was 9.2 and 15.9%, respectively. Mothers ≥35 years of age (aOR 2.75, 95% CI 1.98, 3.80), male neonates (aOR 1.68, 95% CI 1.51, 1.89), overweight and obese (aOR 1.61, 95% CI 1.34, 1.92 and aOR 3.05, 95% CI 2.05, 4.56, respectively) were associated with increased risk of macrosomia. Compared with the less educated mothers, the educated mothers were more likely to have increased risk of macrosomia. IFA (iron and folic acid) supplements intake during pregnancy was more likely to deliver macrosomia or LGA (aOR1.32, 95% CI 1.08, 1.49 and aOR1.42, 95% CI 1.24, 1.61, respectively) as compared with no IFA supplements intake. SCr (serum creatinine concentration) >80 µmol/L was related to decreased risk of macrosomia (aOR 0.73, 95% CI 0.61, 0.86) and LGA (aOR 0.67, 95% CI 0.59, 0.77) as compared with normal range (44-80 µmol/L).Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of macrosomia and LGA in non-GDM pregnant women in China. Healthcare educations and reasonable body weight are necessary for pregnant women to prevent macrosomia and LGA. Mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRVs) infect almost all mammals, and there are some reports on MRVs in China. In this study, a novel strain was identified, which was designated as HLJYC2017. The results of genetic analysis showed that MRV HLJYC2017 is a reassortant strain. According to biological information analysis, different serotypes of MRV contain specific amino acid insertions and deletions in the σ1 protein. Neutralizing antibody epitope analysis revealed partial cross-protection among MRV1, MRV2, and MRV3 isolates from China. L3 gene recombination in MRV was identified for the first time in this study. Background: Procambarus clarkii produces high-quality, delicious meat that is high in protein, low in fat, and rich in calcium and phosphorus. It has become an important aquatic resource in China. Our objectives are (i) to analyze the level of genetic diversity of P. clarkii populations; (ii) to explore the genetic differentiation (Gst); and (iii) to propose appropriate strategies for the conservation. Results: In this study, Shannon's index (I) and Nei's gene diversity index (H) for P. clarkii were high (I=0.3462 and H = 0.2325 on average and I = 0.6264, H = 0.4377 at the species level) based on the SSR markers. The expected heterozygosity value of 17 microsatellite loci in 25 crayfish populations was 0.9317, the observed heterozygosity value was 0.9121, and the observed number of alleles per locus was 2.000; and the effective number of alleles per locus was 1.8075. Among the P. clarkii populations, the inbreeding coefficient within populations (Fis) was 0.2315, overall inbreeding coefficient (Fit) was 0.4438, genetic differentiation coefficient among populations (Fst) was 0.3145 and gene differentiation (Gst) was 0.4785 based on SSR analyses. The cluster analysis results obtained by unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analysis, principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and STRUCTURE analysis were similar. A mantel test showed that the isolation-by-distance pattern was not significant. Conclusions: The high Gst among P. clarkii populations is attributed to genetic drift and geographic isolation. Three species of Scheffersomyces were identified during a diversity study of yeasts. All three are associated with insects and rotting wood in China. Phylogenetic analyses of a genomic dataset combining ITS and nrLSU revealed that these new collections are distinct from known species, thus three new species are introduced i.e. S. jinghongensis, S. paraergatensis, and S. anoplophorae. In our phylogenetic analyses, Scheffersomyces jinghongensis possesses a strong independent lineage and is closely related to S. titanus. S. paraergatensis is closely related to S. ergatensis, while S. anoplophorae is related to S. stambukii. Several differences in physiological traits and molecular data indicate that S. jinghongensis, S. paraergatensis, and S. anoplophorae are three newly identified species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Data from the continuous observations of four shallow snow events (echo top < 8 km) and two deep events (> 10 km) were obtained using the C-band vertically pointing radar with frequency-modulation continuous-wave technology with extremely high resolution during the winter of 2015 - 2016 in middle latitudes of China. Snow-generating cells (GCs) were found near the cloud top in each event. Reflectivity (Z), radial velocity (Vr), and the vertical gradients of Z (dZ/dh, where h is the vertical distance) and Vr (dVr/dh) showed different vertical distribution characteristics between the upper GC and lower stratiform regions (St regions). Fall streaks (FSs) associated with GCs were embedded in the St regions. In the deep events, the proportions of GC regions were slightly larger, but the average contributions to the growth of Z (33%) were lower than those in the shallow events (42%). The average d Z /dh values were usually two to three times larger inside GCs and FSs compared to outside. Bimodal Doppler spectra were used to establish the relationships between Z and the reflectivity-weighted particle fall speed (Vz) for the two regions. The vertical air velocity (Wa) and Vz were then retrieved, and the results showed that both the updraft and the downdraft were alternately observed in GC regions. GC locations were usually accompanied by strong upward air motion, with average speeds mostly distributed around 1.2 m s-1, whereas downward air motion often appeared between GCs. In the St regions, the speeds of Wa were mainly within 0.5 m s-1. The upper areas of the St regions consisted primarily of weak upward motion, whereas weak downward motion dominated the lower areas. There was no apparent difference in Wa inside and outside the FSs. The average Vz was slightly larger inside GCs and FSs compared to outside, with a difference of 0.1 - 0.3 m s-1 and 0.2 - 0.4 m s-1, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) is an emerging and re‐emerging epizootic virus of swine that causes substantial economic losses to the pig industry in China and other countries. The variations in the virus, and its co‐infections with other enteric viruses, have contributed to the poor control of PEDV infection. In the current study, a broad epidemiological investigation of PEDV was carried out in 22 provinces or municipalities of China during 2015–2018. The enteric viruses causing co‐infection with PEDV and the genetic diversity of the PEDV S1 gene were also analysed. The results indicated that, of the 543 diarrhoea samples, 66.85% (363/543) were positive for PEDV, and co‐infection rates of PEDV with 13 enteric viruses ranged from 3.58% (13/363) to 81.55% (296/363). Among these enteric viruses, the signs of diarrhoea induced by PEDV were potentially associated with co‐infections with porcine enterovirus 9/10 (PEV) and torque teno sus virus 2 (TTSuV‐2) (p <.05). The 147 PEDV strains identified in our study belong to Chinese pandemic strains and exhibited genetic diversity. The virulence‐determining S1 proteins of PEDV pandemic strains were undergoing amino acid mutations, in which S58_S58insQGVN–N135dup–D158_I159del‐like mutations were common patterns (97.28%, 143/147). When compared with 2011–2014 PEDV strains, the amino acid mutations of PEDV pandemic strains were mainly located in the N‐terminal domain of S1 (S1‐NTD), and 21 novel mutations occurred in 2017 and 2018. Furthermore, protein homology modelling showed that the mutations in pattern of insertion and deletion mutations of the S1 protein of PEDV pandemic strains may have caused structural changes on the surface of the S1 protein. Objectives. To describe the incidence, risk factors, and potential causes of preterm birth (PTB) in China between 2015 and 2016. Methods. The China Labor and Delivery Survey was a population-based multicenter study conducted from 2015 to 2016. We assigned each birth a weight based on the sampling frame. We calculated the incidence of PTB and the multivariable logistic regression, and we used 2-step cluster analysis to examine the relationships between PTB and maternal, fetal, and placental conditions. Results. The weighted nationwide incidence of PTB was 7.3% of all births and 6.7% of live births at 24 or more weeks of gestation. Of the PTBs, 70.5% were born after 34 weeks and 42.7% were iatrogenic. Nearly two thirds of all preterm births were attributable to maternal, fetal, or placental conditions, and one third had unknown etiology. Conclusions. This study provided information on the incidence of PTB in China and identified several factors associated with PTB. The high frequency of iatrogenic PTB calls for a careful assessment and prudent management of such pregnancies, as PTB has short- and long-term health consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A total of 472 samples from domestic pigs collected in China from 2015 to 2018 were tested for the presence of porcine circovirus types 2 and 3 (PCV2 and PCV3, respectively) by conventional polymerase chain reaction analysis. The prevalence of PCV2, PCV3, and PCV2/3 co-infection was 50.0%, 13.3%, and 6.78%, respectively. The complete genomic sequences of 66 PCV2 isolates and four PCV3 isolates were determined. Based phylogenetic analysis, the PCV2 isolates were assigned to three genotypes, PCV2a, PCV2b, and PCV2d, representing 13.6% (9/66), 25.8% (17/66), and 60.6% (40/66) of the total, respectively. All four PCV3 isolates shared a high degree of similarity in their complete nucleotide sequences (98.8–99.8% identity) and ORF2 amino acid sequences (98.6–99.5% identity). These results indicate that all three PCV2 genotypes (PCV2a, PCV2b, and PCV2d) are present on pig farms and that PCV2d has become the predominant genotype. The predicted amino acid sequences of the four PCV3 isolates indicated that PCV3-CN-JL53/PCV3-CN-LN56, PCV3-CN-HLJ3, and PCV3-CN-0710, belonged to the genotypes PCV3a, PCV3b, and PCV3a-IM, respectively. In view of the great harm that PCV2 causes to the pig industry, the epidemic trend of PCV3 should continue to be closely monitored. Gynostemma pentaphyllum, a member of family Cucurbitaceae, is a perennial creeping herb used as a traditional medicinal plant in China. In this study, six polymorphic nSSR and four EST‐SSR primers were used to genotype 1,020 individuals in 72 wild populations of G. pentaphyllum. The genetic diversity and population structure were investigated, and ecological niche modeling was performed to reveal the evolution and demographic history of its natural populations. The results show that G. pentaphyllum has a low level of genetic diversity and high level of variation among populations because of pervasive asexual propagation, genetic drift, and long‐term habitat isolation. Results of the Mantel test demonstrate that the genetic distance and geographic distance are significantly correlated among G. pentaphyllum natural populations. The populations can be divided into two clusters on the basis of genetic structure. Asymmetrical patterns of historical gene flow were observed among the clusters. For the contemporary, almost all the bidirectional gene flow of the related pairs was symmetrical with slight differences. Recent bottlenecks were experienced by 34.72% of the studied populations. The geographic range of G. pentaphyllum continues to expand northward and eastward from Hengduan Mountains. The present distribution of G. pentaphyllum is a consequence of its complex evolution. Polyploidy in G. pentaphyllum is inferred to be polygenetic. Finally, G. pentaphyllum is a species in need of protection, so in situ and ex situ measures should be considered in the future. • Attitudes among medical staffs are important in epileptic patients' diagnosis and treatment. • Neurological group were more positive toward epilepsy than non-neurological. • Nurses were more negative, as compared to doctors. • Age and title had significant impacts on the non-neurological staffs' performance. • Health education can be a new way of stigma-reducing public interventions in China. To assess attitudes concerning epilepsy among non-/neurological medical personnel from basic-level hospitals in southern China and identify significant predictive factors for future stigma reduction interventions. The Chinese Public Attitudes Toward Epilepsy (CPATE) scale was administered to 184 neurological and 264 non-neurological medical staff members from basic-level hospitals in southern China. Positively stated items in the PATE scale were reversely scored; in this case, a higher score would indicate a more negative attitude. The mean score of each item among the neurological group was statistically lower than that of the non-neurological group. The mean scores in both the general and personal domains of the CPATE scale were significantly lower among the doctors as compared to nurses. This was the first study to evaluate the attitudes toward epilepsy among medical personnel with different characteristics in basic-level hospitals in China. Health education can be a new model for stigma-reducing public interventions in China. Future strategies should first focus on improving access to correct knowledge about epilepsy among non-neurological medical staffs. This would be a vital breakthrough point to improve attitudes toward epilepsy in the whole society to help ease the disease burden on people with epilepsy, their families and the community in the years to come. Soil extracellular enzyme activities (EEAs) and ecoenzymatic stoichiometry (EES) play an essential role in soil nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition. Understanding EEAs and EES variation patterns and their influencing factors could offer direct information about the soil structure, function, and soil response to anthropogenic disturbances and climate change. This issue is noteworthy, especially in high-altitude areas where climate change is imminent and vegetation is diversified. This study measured different soil EEAs and EES characteristics and explored their key controlling factors along nine altitudes ranging from 2500 m to over 5200 m in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of western China. We also analyzed the effects of plant microhabitats on soil EEAs and EES. The results showed that most soil EEAs and EES had significant variability in spatial characteristics, and enzymatic activity increased with altitude. Compared to the soil nutrient distribution which also increased with altitude, this same change trend of soil EEAs and soil nutrients was inconsistent with the resource allocation theory. Microorganisms might mediate the effects of environmental factors on soil EEAs by altering the enzyme production efficiency. Specific soil EEAs (EEAs/g SOC), like soil enzyme carbon: phosphorus ratios (E CP), and nitrogen: phosphorus ratios (E NP), showed an opposing trend in variation, which decreased with increasing altitude. Plant microhabitats significantly promoted soil EEAs due to the accumulation of soil nutrients (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus). Soil EEAs and EES's spatial variability was mainly determined by edaphic factors, accounting for >70.24 % and 55.67 % of latitudinal variations, respectively. Generally, carbon and nitrogen limitations were substantial in this area and gradually alleviated with increasing altitude. • A water optical classification method was developed using density peaks. • The class-specific retrieval models of surface water turbidity were established. • Long-term dynamics of surface water turbidity was tracked using satellite images. • Interaction of water level and rainfall is probably the main environmental driver. Surface water turbidity (SWT), as a low-cost proxy of surface suspended sediment, is important for characterizing the hydro-ecological process and light availability in the lake or reservoir ecosystem. In this study, we proposed the combined use of HJ-1 charge-coupled device imaging and field observation to track the long-term SWT dynamics with environmental changes in Lakes Gaoyang, Hanfeng, and Changshou of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China. In situ remote sensing reflectance spectra were utilized to develop the characteristic spectral indexes for the SWT estimation in different water optical classes separated by a density peaks-based classification. Significant correlations were found between the red-, four-band, band ratio spectral indexes and SWT (determination coefficient >0.71 and root-mean-square error <8.32 nephelometric turbidity unit), suggesting a crucial role of the class-specific retrieval models for the SWT estimation in optically complex waters. The proposed method was further used to monitor the spatio-temporal SWT dynamics over the three lakes from 2008 to 2019, demonstrating that the significant SWT decline in Lakes Gaoyang and Hanfeng and the relatively stable trend in Lake Changshou during the 11-year period. Specifically, the SWT decreasing trends may be attributed to the water level linkage mechanism of Three Gorges and Wuyang Dams. In addition, analyses with simultaneous environmental factors showed that the seasonal and inter-annual variations of SWT appear to be closely correlated with water level and rainfall.
