Background: The prevalence of psychiatric disorders by demographic characteristics in elderly people is poorly understood, at least in the northwest of Iran. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of various psychiatric disorders in the elderly population in East Azerbaijan Province, Tabriz. A total of 1000 aging people were randomly selected from the general population. Data were collected using valid structured instruments and face-to-face interviews by trained psychologists. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR (SCID-IV) and Abbreviated Mental Test Questionnaire were used. Chi-square (χ2) test was used for categorized variables, and an independent T-test was carried out for quantitative variables. Results: Overall, 38.5% of the elderly had at least one mental disorder (47.2% women, 27.3% men). The prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and any anxiety disorders was 16.6% (22.4% female and 9.3% male) and 16.7% (23.1% female and 8.6% male), respectively. Likewise, the overall prevalence of any depressive symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), general anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and panic disorders were 21.6%, 7%, 5.3%, and 5.9%, respectively. The prevalence of any mental disorder in the first, second, and third quartiles of the socio-economic level was 54.3%, 37%, and 17.8%, respectively. The prevalence of any mental disorders among the marginalized and the non-marginalized population is 55.3 and 31.5%, respectively. Conclusions: We found 38.5% (47.2% women, 27.3% men) of the elderly people had any mental disorders, and 21.6% of them had any depressive disorders. The prevalence of mental disorders in elders was almost like adults and middle-aged people in this study. A temperature‐induced counter‐current homogenous liquid‐liquid extraction procedure performed in a burette has been proposed for the isolation of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 from various fruit chip samples. In this method, a homogenous solution of deionized water and cyclohexylamine is added to the solid sample and the resulted mixture is vortexed. In the following, the liquid phase is taken and passed through the burette filled with a mixture of calcium oxide (as a phase separation agent) and sand (to avoid clumping the calcium oxide). By doing so, the temperature of the solution is increased by hydration of calcium oxide and consequently, the homogenous state is broken and the aflatoxins are migrated into the resulted tiny droplets of cyclohexylamine. This phase is collected on the top of the solution owing to its low density with respect to an aqueous solution. Numerous parameters which can affect the efficiency of the suggested approach were evaluated and under the best situations, great repeatability, low limits of determination and quantification, and high extraction recoveries were acquired. BACKGROUND: Enterococci are naturally found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of animals and humans, as well as animal-derived foods and vegetables. We here aimed to determine the prevalence, antibiotic resistance, and virulence determinants of E. faecium and E. faecalis in traditional cheese in the North-west of Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty specimens of popular traditional cheese from dairy stores of Urmia and Tabriz, Iran, were collected. Identification of the genus and species of enterococci was done using molecular and phenotypic techniques. RESULTS: Forty-eight (96 %) of 50 traditional cheese samples were harboring Enterococcus spp, including Enterococcus faecalis (n= 40; 83.33 %) and E. faecium (n= 8; 16.67 %). The prevalence of enterococci ranged from 1.1×105 to 9.7×104 CFU/g, and 1.1×103 to 9.8×103 CFU/g in Urmia and Tabriz samples, respectively. Rifampicin resistance (n= 38; 79.2 %) was the most common pattern observed in the susceptibility test, which was followed by quinupristin/dalfopristin (n= 33; 68.75 %). Among E. faecalis isolates, cpd (100 %), ace (92.5 %) and gelE (87.5 %), and among E. faecium isolates, gelE (100 %) and asa1 (75 %) were found to have the most common virulence genes. CONCLUSION: E. faecalis was the predominant species, displaying more virulence determinants. It also had high antibiotic resistance, as compared to E. faecium. The enterococci identified here commonly expressed virulence and antibiotic resistance determinants. So, it is required to improve the maintenance and production quality of traditional cheese to avoid enterococci contamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The present study was designed and conducted to evaluate multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment costs and the resulting economic impact imposed on MS patients in Iran.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, among randomly selected 300 MS patients, registered in the MS Association of East Azerbaijan Province, Iran (1 year after their treatment began). The regression analysis, ANOVA, T-test, and chi-square were used.Results: The average amount of out-of-pocket payments (OOPs) by MS patients during the previous year was 1669.20 USD, most of which was spent on medication, rehabilitation care, and physician visits. Their mean annual income was 5182.84 USD. Fifty four percent of families with an MS patient suffer from catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and 44% experience poverty caused by the OOPs. Occupational status, having supplemental health insurance, and being residents of Tabriz significantly affect OOPs, CHE, and the resulting poverty (P < 0.05).Conclusion: The catastrophic financial burden of health care costs on MS patients and their families justifies health policymakers to promote pre-payment systems and provide subsidies to less well-off patients to protect them from the unfairness of OOPs and its resulting CHE and poverty. Tenuazonic acid (TeA) is a secondary toxic metabolite that is produced by some Alternaria species. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of TeA in fruit juice samples. A total of 50 (40 Grape; 5 Apple; 5 Orange) fruit juice samples were collected from Tabriz, Iran local market and were analyzed for TeA contamination via HPLC-UV. Analyte extraction was done by acetonitrile/water/formic acid (84/16/1 v/v/v). Lower limit of quantitation and upper limit of quantification for the developed method were 10 μg/L and 4000 μg/L respectively. Recovery ranged was between 96 to 108 %. The results showed 42.5% of grape juice samples were contaminated with TeA and the average concentration of TeA was 139.2±115.5 μg/L. However, it was not detected in apple and orange juice samples. This is the first study on the presence of TeA in Iranian food samples and showed that the necessity of more supervision on the production of grape juice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Superwoman refers to the identity of a woman who performs several important roles simultaneously and full-time, such as being a wife, mother, and homemaker while holding a job. This study aims to examine the career experiences of Iranian superwomen who maintained their mental health while holding multiple roles.Methods: Data for this qualitative study were collected via semi-structured interview and analyzed using conventional content analysis. The study participants were 12 multi-role women from different occupations in Tabriz, North West of Iran selected through purposive and theoretical sampling. The women's mental health status was assessed using Mental Health Continuum-Short Form questionnaire before participating in the research.Results: The results were classified into three main categories. The first category included Underlying Factors of Job Experience with six subcategories, including Limited job opportunities for women, Educational context (mindset shaped in the parental home), Commitment or freedom in obtaining a job and its continuation, Personality traits, and Non-cognitive skills (emotional intelligence and spiritual intelligence); the second category included the adopted strategies to solve career problems with two subcategories: effective strategies, including the benefits of having a mindset of abundance and having a vision and strategic planning, and ineffective strategies, including the benefits of having a mindset of scarcity; and the third category included Perceived Consequences of employment with two subcategories: psychological consequences and social consequences, with both subcategories including some positive and negative further subcategories. Moreover, a conceptual relationship between the main categories and the subcategories was evident.Conclusions: The content obtained not only supports the findings about the experiences of multi-role women in cultures outside Iran, but also points to the unique aspects of Iranian superwomen's life experiences and narratives. Computed tomography (CT) is now the primary diagnostic method for head trauma because of its ability to demonstrate the nature, extent, sites, and multiplicity of brain injuries. Although there have been numerous reports on the CT findings of most types of intracranial injury, the findings in brainstem injury have not been well described. This study aimed at comparing the autopsy findings of brainstem in head trauma in comparison with CT scan results. Two hundred patients with head trauma, who expired after a period of time of hospitalization, were assessed in a diagnostic value study. Brain stem involvement was determined by autopsy as well as CT scanning of the brain during their hospitalization. The results of the two methods were compared with each other, emphasizing on the type and location of probable lesions in the brain stem. Considering the autopsy as the method of the choice, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of CT scan in brain stem lesions of patients with head trauma were calculated. The effect of primary cause of head trauma, survival time and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) were evaluated, as well. Brain stem lesions were detected in 39 (19.5%) patients in autopsy. However, CT scan revealed brain stem lesions in 23(11.5%) cases. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV of CT scan was 59%, 100%, 100% and 91% respectively. The most common lesions of the brain stem region were as contusion of pons (8.5%), medulla (5%) and midbrain (4.5%). There were 6 (3%) cases of ponto-medullary junction tearing and 1 (0.5%) case of cervico-medullary junction tearing. CT scan is a specific method of evaluating patients with probable brain stem injuries after head trauma, but low sensitivity limits its efficacy. Underground construction of the Tabriz metro line 1 involved boring twin tunnels with two earth pressure balance machines in alluvial deposits. Although this type of machine is recommended for excavation in fine soils, its performance was evaluated in this project where part of the ground consists of alluvial deposits with particle size ranging from silt to boulder and even rock blocks. It was found that the tunnel boring machine (TBM) performance was highly reduced due to the variation in ground conditions. Many types of problem were observed during the excavation in coarse grained alluvial deposits including high cutter-head torque, excessive wear of tools, breaking of TBM parts and ground instabilities in the form of large settlement and ground collapse. A trial effort was implanted to stabilize the overburden ground by the injection of cement grout, but this proved to be unsuccessful. In both cases, the excavation operation was delayed. With the experience gained from the excavation of the first tunnel and use of foam with a high foam expansion ratio as a soil conditioner in closed mode, the performance of the TBM in the second tunnel improved. Background & objectives: As private hospitals and institutions increase drastically, the health care market has changed to a comparative market and thus many factors affect the selection of hospital by patients. The aim of this research was to recognize the factors affecting hospital selection decisions (governmental and private) from the patients' viewpoint in Iran. Method: This research is a descriptive-analytical study which has been done cross-sectionally. The Research population was comprised of patients hospitalized at Emam Reza Governmental Hospital and Shams Private Hospital of Tabriz, Iran. A total of 376 samples participated in research who were divided between two hospitals using proportional allocation method. Required data was collected by a researcher-made questionnaire. Data was analyzed using Chi-Square and T-Test statistical tests. Findings: Findings show that some factors including referring to hospital by ambulance, physicians' advice, family income, insurance type, hospital quality, employment of family members in hospitals, cost of services provided at hospital and information given to patients about their disease are the factors affecting the hospital selection decision by patients. Conclusions: Although various factors affect the governmental or private hospital selection, the high percentage of referring to Emam Reza governmental hospital and the pervasive role of physicians' advice in selection of hospital due to exclusiveness of physicians in educational-treatment centers, caused the patients not to practically have any roles in selecting their hospitals and thus the role of other factors in selecting hospital, was less. Amiri S, Fakhari A, Maheri M, Mohammadpoor Asl A. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in primary school children of Tabriz, North-West Iran. Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology 2010; 24: 597-601. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as its subtypes, in elementary school children and their demographic characteristics. A random clustered sample of elementary students was selected from schools of Tabriz, North-West Iran. The clinical diagnosis of ADHD was based on DSM-IV-TR criteria using an interview with children who were selected as scoring high on the Conner's teacher rating scale. A total of 30 schools and 1658 students were evaluated. The prevalence rate of clinical ADHD in the elementary students of Tabriz was 9.7%. Only two had been diagnosed previously. The mean age (standard deviation) was 9.39 (1.27) years. ADHD was more common among boys, students of the third level and children with an un-educated mother or father. It was not related to the type of school, age or birth order. Students with ADHD had lower school performance and orderliness reported by the school. Inattentiveness was more common among schoolgirls while the most common subtype was the combined one. Inattentive students had a significantly lower school performance. ADHD is common in elementary schools of this region and is correlated with poor performance. Greater awareness of parents and teachers concerning children at risk is necessary for an early diagnosis. Objectives: Too much diversity and ever increasing number of genetic disorders appear as a big challenge in coming future. One of the main sources of genetic disorders is the consanguineous marriages which are, unfortunately very common in our society. In order to prepare ourselves to accept the challenge, the first step is to get complete information of their prevalence and their risk factors. Patients and Methods: The study was made during 2003-2007 in Tabriz city of Iran. We selected 6000 families and a complete data was obtained on a questionnaire comprised of information regarding marital ages, number of pregnancies, type of delivery, ratio of consanguineous and non consanguineous marriages jobs of parents… etc and their effect on child malformations. Results: Consanguineous marriages of all types were related with increased congenital malformations (with ratio 43/1000 for consanguineous marriages and for non consanguineous marriages 28/1000). Mother age less than 18 and more than 35 particularly was accompanied with increased malformations while education of mother came out to be inversely related to congenital malformation. Conclusion: Increased stillbirths, consanguineous marriage and malformations, especially of musculoskeletal system require new planning on national level to control and aware people of the consequences of consanguineous marriages. [Display omitted] • Astarghan deposit includes skarn, porphyry and epithermal mineralizations (Cu–Au). • Epithermal mineralization of Au in Astarghan shows low-sulfidation characteristics. • Tetrahedrite and stibnite are the main hosts for gold in the Astarghan deposit. • Native gold also occurs in epithermal quartz veins as tiny particles of 50–200 μm. • The δ34S values of pyrites in all mineralization zones show magmatic origin. The Astarghan area in northwest Iran (~50 km north of Tabriz) represents an excellent example of coexisting and associated skarn, porphyry and epithermal mineralizations of copper and gold. This contribution aims to study the geology, alteration and mineralization in these deposits, as well as the occurrence of gold and its host minerals, and present the physico-chemical characteristics of ore-forming fluids and the sulfur origin, in order to get a better understanding of development and evolution of these mineralizations. The Astarghan porphyry stock (Oligo–Miocene) intruded the upper Cretaceous flysch-type sedimentary sequence (calcareous sandstone and limestone with intercalations of siltstone, shale and marl) and brought about metamorphism and metasomatism along the contact. The Cu–Au mineralization in the Astarghan area occurred mainly in three forms: (1) skarn patches along the contact (Zone A), (2) stockwork-type and disseminated porphyry mineralization within the potassic (at Kaghdara and Boiokwari areas) and phyllic (at Sildirimdara area) alteration zones (Zone B), and (3) native gold-bearing low-sulfidation epithermal veins within the argillic alteration zone at Nowrozkala area (Zone C). The micro-thermometric studies on the porphyry-type Kaghdara potassic alteration zone showed that homogenization temperatures for liquid-rich and vapor-rich 2-phase, as well as halite-bearing multiphase inclusions range about 160–420 °C, 220–460 °C, and 320–580 °C, respectively. Salinities of the 2-phase and multiphase inclusions have ranges of 5–25 and 40–70 wt% NaCl eq. , respectively. However, fluid inclusions present in the epithermal veins of Nowrozkala are mainly liquid-rich 2-phase, and their homogenization temperature and salinity values lie within the ranges of 118–325 °C and 0.6–7.4 wt% NaCl eq. , respectively. The approximate estimated depth of the sulfide and gold mineralization in the porphyry system ranges from 1.6 to 2.5 km, and in the epithermal system is < 0.9 km. The sulfur isotopic analysis of pyrite from the porphyry and epithermal mineralizations in the potassic alteration zone at Kaghdara and argillic alteration zone at Nowrozkala indicate that the δ34S values (–0.1 to –0.3 and –0.5 to –1.1‰, respectively) are close to the range of magmatic sources. Finally, electron probe micro-analyses indicate that besides independent particles of 50–200 μm in the epithermal veins, gold is mainly hosted by tetrahedrite within the porphyry-related phyllic alteration zone, but especially stibnite within the epithermal veins; these minerals, as well as epithermal polyhedral pyrites contain native gold inclusions. A road accident risk map that is designed to locate high-risk areas is an efficient way to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities. To produce an accurate road accident risk map, it is required to compute the probability of the accident's occurrence by considering the various variables that contribute to road accidents. To this end, this research proposed a generalized regression neural network tuned with self-organizing map to estimate the risk of road accidents. This hybrid predictive model estimates the road accident risk by considering 22 different predictor variables (features), including geographic characteristics, temporal conditions, weather conditions, road-related characteristics, vehicle-related characteristics, and driver characteristics calculated based on the authoritative data sources and volunteered geographic information (VGI). The required VGI was collected in this study by developing a third-party application that was run inside telegram messenger. To evaluate the performance and usability of the proposed model for estimation of the accident risk along the road, the developed model was applied to the Tabriz-Marand dual carriageway, Iran. In this sense, 30 different scenarios were designed, and for each scenario, the risk of the accident was predicted at 3008 points along the Tabriz-Marand dual carriageway. A quality assessment of the proposed approach for different scenarios demonstrated that the predicted accident risk had very high accuracy (average accuracy about 90.74%). According to the results of this research, distance from traffic control cameras, day of the week, driver's age, weather, elevation, and vehicle type were the most effective factors in high-risk areas of the study area. • A multiple integrated model was developed to predict soil hydraulic conductivity. • The MARS, M5Tree, SVM and ELM models were also implemented for Ks estimation. • The proposed model (MM-ANN) was recognized as a reliable model for estimating Ks. A multiple model integration scheme driven by artificial neural network (ANN) (MM-ANN) was developed and tested to improve the prediction accuracy of soil hydraulic conductivity (Ks) in Tabriz plain, an arid region of Iran. The soil parameters such as silt, clay, organic matter (OM), bulk density (BD), pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were used as model inputs to predict soil Ks. Standalone models including multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), M5 model tree (M5Tree), support vector machine (SVM) and extreme learning machine (ELM) were also implemented for comparative evaluation with MM-ANN model predictions. Based on several performance indicators such as Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), results showed that the calibrated MM-ANN model involving the predictions of MARS, M5Tree, SVM and ELM models by considering all the soil parameters used in this study as inputs provided superior soil Ks estimates. The proposed hybrid model (MM-ANN) emerged as a reliable intelligence model for the assessment of soil hydraulic conductivity with an NSE = 0.939 & 0.917 during training and testing, respectively. Azeri people are at present day mainly living in an area which comprises North (Azerbaijan) and South (Azeri Iran provinces) parts, living the biggest population in Azeri Iran provinces with about 17–20 million people. They were studied HLA-A, -B, -DRB1 and -DQB1 allele and extended haplotype frequencies in unrelated Iranian Tabriz Azeris from a rural area close to Tabriz City. The HLA extended haplotypes with highest frequencies are: 1) HLA- A*24:02-B*35:01-DRB1*11:01-DQB1*03:01, shared with Mediterraneans and southern Russians (Chuvash, which also show Mediterranean characters); and 2) HLA-A*01:02-B*08:01-DRB1*03:01-DQB1*02:01, found also in Chuvash and other Azeri samples from Tabriz. Neí's DA HLA-DRB1 genetic distances, HLA-DRB1 Neighbour-Joining dendrogram and Vista analyses show that population with closest distance is Kurdish, followed by Iranian Gorgan and Southern Russia/ North Caucasus Chuvash; probably these latter groups and Azeris were populating North Mesopotamia/ Caucasus Mts. since prehistoric times. Kurds (in Iraq and Iran) do not speak Turk while Azeris do: they are both genetically close, but they are not genetically close to present day Anatolia (Turkey) Turks who also speak Turk language and show a typical Mediterranean HLA profile. Introduction: Tumors are the second-most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. Due to the high prevalence and mortality rate, brain tumors are of great importance and makeup about 5% of all tumors. Different types of brain tumors have their special pattern based on age, sex, complaints on admission, radiological signs and sometimes, their family history and seem these patterns are changing according to the geographic region over time. In this study, we evaluate the incidence of brain tumors in the northwest of Iran. Materials and Methods: All patients with brain tumor diagnosis that were hospitalized between April 2011 and March 2016 evaluated. Exclusion criteria were considered as secondary tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) (metastases) and duplicate records for the recurrent disease of the same patient. Data collected from their documents and analyzed with SPSS version 16. Results: In the present study, male to female (M: F) ratio is 1:1. 92.5% of tumors are primary in which meningiomas (22%) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) (19.6%) are the most common types. The rarest tumor types are neurocytoma (0.3%) and chondroid chordoma (0.3%). GBM is the most common tumor in the male population and meningiomas are most common in females. Medulloblastoma and meningioma with a median age of 11 and 58 years, respectively, were known as the most common primary CNS malignancy of the youngest and oldest age of study group. Conclusion: The obtained data from this study revealed that age and sex are associated with the tumor types, which is consistent with the previous results. Brain tumors involvement pattern is changing in male patients somehow there is a tendency of involving more aggressive and malignant tumor types in male individuals could be seen. Background: Considering the importance of sexual drive among teenagers, parental and societal concerns about teenagers' sexual drives, particularly in religious communities such as Iran is of practical importance; therefore, this present research was designed to study students' sources of sexual knowledge acquisition. Methods: This research was carried out among 2600 high school students in the cities of Tabriz, Urmia, and Ardabil in Northwest Iran. Students were selected through a multi-staged randomized sampling method in Tabriz and by the convenience method in Ardabil and Urmia. The instrument was a self-administered questionnaire, which included 19 different resources. The resources were categorized into seven main groups and the results were statistically analyzed with SPSS version 11.5 software. Results: Based on the mean score of each of the seven main groups of resources, the ranking order of the resources was as follows: 1) immediate friends and peers 2) pictures, magazines, and books 3) audiovisual (CDs, foreign movies, satellite programs, and the Internet) 4) school trainings 5) physicians, clergy, and counseling centers 6) family (parents and siblings) and 7) close family members. The differences between the resources were statistically significant (P value= 0.0001). Conclusion: Results of the present study emphasize that teenagers should be educated in different areas of sexual problems with the help of parents, schools, and official sources and centers in the society as confident sources of obtaining sexual knowledge. In this work, a homogenous liquid–liquid extraction method was combined with dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction and utilized for the extraction of Co, Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Tl from honey samples before their determination by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. For this purpose, firstly, diluted honey solution was transferred into a glass test tube and mixed with a few milliliters of a mixture of n -butanol and choline chloride: menthol: p -aminophenol deep eutectic solvent. A homogenous solution was obtained. After that an appropriate amount of sodium chloride was added into the solution and sonicated for 6 min. During this step, the homogenous solution was broken and the mixture of n -butanol and the deep eutectic solvent mixture was collected on top of the solution. The supernatant phase was removed and quickly injected into deionized water. After centrifugation, the collected phase at the bottom of the tube was injected into the determination system. Under the optimum situations, low limits of detection (0.24–0.74 ng g–1) and quantification (0.79–2.46 ng g–1), high extraction recoveries (80–92%), and good repeatability (relative standard deviations equal to or less than 3.6% and 3.9% for intra– and inter-day precisions, respectively) were acquired. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the eating habits, physical activity, and body size perception by obesity status among 2–18 year old children in Iran. METHODS: This cross sectional study included 250 children and adolescents aged between 2 and 18. Participants' anthropometric measurements were measured, adherence of Mediterranean Diet was evaluated by a questionnaire, the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for children and adolescents (KIDMED), body satisfaction, and perception of body size. RESULTS: Mean age of subjects was 9.07±4.80 years, and 52.4% were girls. The KIDMED index score was 16.3% low, 54.3% moderate and 29.4% good. 72.7% of parents with overweight children and 36.4% with obese children, were perceived that their child was normal, and compared with 58.3% of overweight and 7.7% of obese participants perceived normal body size. There were no significant differences between physical activity in any weight status (p > 0.05) and between boys and girls in the KIDMED index and any of foods intake. There was a significant difference in mean differences of KIDMED index in boys in the four obesity statuses (P = 0.04), as well as in food consumption (P = 0.04), except for pulses in boys and girls. CONCLUSION: The percentage of obesity in boys is more compared to girls, the lowest KIDMED index score is for boys in the obesity group. Late Miocene volcanic rocks host the Sari Gunay epithermal gold deposit in NW Iran. These rocks are located within the Hamedan–Tabriz volcanic belt and occupy the northwestern part of the Sanandaj–Sirjan zone (SaSZ). The volcanic rocks span in composition from latite to dacite and rhyolite. Plagioclase, hornblende, biotite and quartz are the main phenocrysts in a fine-grained and glassy matrix. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry zircon U–Pb dating yielded crystallization ages of 10.10 ± 0.01 Ma and 11.18 ± 0.14 Ma for rhyolite and dacite, respectively. High ratios of Sr/Y (> 20) and La/Yb (> 20), high contents of Sr (≥ 400 ppm), low contents of MgO (≤ 6 wt%), Y ≤ 18 ppm (c. 16.5 ppm), Yb ≤ 1.9 ppm (c. 1.53 ppm) and weak negative Eu anomalies (Eu*/Eu c. 0.81) are compatible with a high-silica adakitic signature of the rocks. Regarding the location of the study area nearly 100 km from the Zagros suture zone, we argue that delamination of lithospheric mantle beneath the SaSZ has played a key role in the development of the adakitic rocks in a post-collision tectonic regime. The adakitic melts are suggested to have formed by partial melting of delaminated continental lithosphere and/or lower crustal amphibolite following the collision of the Arabian and Iranian plates. The aim of this study is determining the prevalence of smoking stages in adolescents of Tabriz city (northwest of Iran) and identifying the personal, environmental, and psychological factors relating to cigarette smoking. Fifty-seven high schools were randomly selected, and 4903 students were completed a self-administered questionnaire about cigarette smoking and the related risk factors. The association of independent variables with cigarette smoking was evaluated using the ordinal logistic regression model. In total, 17.3% of the participants were experimenters (95% CI: 15.8-18.9) and 5.0% were regular smokers (95% CI: 3.7-6.2). The results showed that the male gender (OR=2.92; CI: 1.94-4.77), age (OR=1.27; CI: 1.02-1.64), having general risk taking behavior (OR=1.50; CI: 1.02-2.21), presence of a cigarette smoker in the family (OR=1.78; CI: 1.23-2.54), friendship with close cigarette smoker friends (OR=2.52; CI: 1.65- 3.86), substance abuse experience (OR=8.27; CI: 2.61-25.61), attitude toward cigarette smoking (OR=1.22; CI: 1.10-1.27) and positive thinking about cigarette smoking (OR=1.05; CI: 1.01-1.14) are associated to cigarette smoking in adolescents. The cigarette smoking prevalence is minimal in Tabriz city adolescents, especially in girls; but the experimenter prevalence is considerable. Purpose: Aflatoxins (AFs) are a group of mycotoxins and secondary metabolites of various species of Aspergillus. There are various forms of aflatoxins including B1, B2, G1, G2, M1 and M2 types. Aflatoxins cause important health problems and have high potential effect on liver cancer. Therefore, numerous investigations have been conducted during last three decades. The aim of this work is to determine the contamination levels of nuts used by the confectionaries in Tabriz. Methods: A total of 142 samples including 35 almond, 26 walnut, 4 seeds of apricot, 6 sunflower seeds kernel, 6 sesame seed, 6 peanuts, 32 pistachio,13 hazelnuts and 14 cashews samples were collected from Tabriz confectionaries. The ELISA method was employed for the screening of total aflatoxins. Results: In 13 cases (28.1% of pistachios, 5.1% of walnuts and 7.1% of cashews) contamination rate of higher than 15 ppb were observed. The HPLC method was applied for the confirmation of ELISA results. Aflatoxin B1 was the highest detected AFs. Conclusion: The overall results of the tested samples indicated that the rate of contamination of pistachios is higher than the other tested samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Employees can be counseled on how they feel about their job. If any particular dimension of their job is causing them dissatisfaction, they can be assisted to appropriately change it. In this study, we investigated the factors affecting job satisfaction from the perspective of employees working in the health system and thereby a quantitative measure of job satisfaction. Methods: Using eight focus group discussions (n=70), factors affecting job satisfaction of the employees were discussed. The factors identified from literature review were categorized in four groups: structural and managerial, social, work in itself, environmental and welfare factors. Results: The findings confirmed the significance of structural and managerial, social, work in itself, environmental and welfare factors in the level of job satisfaction. In addition, a new factor related to individual characteristics such as employee personal characteristics and development was identified. Conclusion: In order to improve the quality and productivity of work, besides, structural and managerial, social, work in it-self, environmental and welfare factors, policy makers should be taken into account individual characteristics of the employee as a factor affecting job satisfaction. Background: The familial clustering of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in first and second degree relatives of patients supports the role of genetic factors. The proportion of heredity in its development is roughly 60%; however, most individuals closely related to someone with RA do not get the disease. Considering the lack of sufficient data on the familial aggregation of RA in Iran, we designed this study for clarifying the familial prevalence of RA. Objective: To determine the prevalence of RA among relatives of patients with RA and to evaluate the mean disease onset age in relatives. Methods: In a longitudinal study from July 2008 to July 2010, we followed 210 unrelated patients with RA and their first and second degree relatives (FDR+ and SDR+), by interviewing and physical examination of those with symptoms, to ascertain prevalence. Familial RA was defined by presence of at least two siblings fulfilling the 1987 ACR criteria for RA. Results: We demonstrated that 17.6% of patients have at least one affected relative. The prevalence of RA in the family of studied patients was 0.83% (42 people). Thirty-two in FDR+ and 10 people in SDR+ (2.53% and 0.26% of all family), also 1.12% in female relatives and 0.39% in male relatives had RA. The odds ratio for FDR/SDR was 2.52. The mean age at disease onset in relatives was 42.30 ± 1.51 years in FDR+ and 34.40 ± 2.10 years in the SDR+ group (0.03). Introduction: Bromhexine is a potential therapeutic option in COVID-19, but no data from a randomized clinical trial has been available. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of bromhexine in intensive care unit (ICU) admission, mechanical ventilation, and mortality in patients with COVID-19. Methods: An open-label randomized clinical trial study was performed in Tabriz, North-West of Iran. They were randomized to either the treatment with the bromhexine group or the control group, in a 1:1 ratio with 39 patients in each arm. Standard therapy was used in both groups and those patients in the treatment group received oral bromhexine 8 mg three times a day additionally. The primary outcome was a decrease in the rate of ICU admissions, intubation/mechanical ventilation, and mortality. Results: A total of 78 patients with similar demographic and disease characteristics were enrolled. There was a significant reduction in ICU admissions (2 out of 39 vs. 11 out of 39, P = 0.006), intubation (1 out of 39 vs. 9 out of 39, P = 0.007) and death (0 vs. 5, P = 0.027) in the bromhexine treated group compared to the standard group. No patients were withdrawn from the study because of adverse effects. Conclusion: The early administration of oral bromhexine reduces the ICU transfer, intubation, and the mortality rate in patients with COVID-19. This affordable medication can easily be administered everywhere with a huge positive impact(s) on public health and the world economy. Purpose: Nocturnal enuresis is one of the most common diseases in children, which can affect their mental health. The aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence of nocturnal enuresis in Iranian children through sys-tematic review and meta-analysis.Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted through systematic review and meta-analysis of studies during March 2000- July 2018. Articled related to the subject were reviewed by searching the Medline (PubMed), Scopus, ScienceDirect, SID, Magiran, Barakat, and Google Scholar databases where the heterogeneity of studies was investigated using I2 index. The data analysis was then carried out using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis soft-ware.Results: 15 articles with a sample size of 16614 individuals aged 3 to 18 years entered the meta-analysis process. The overall prevalence of nocturnal enuresis in children of Iran was 10.2% (95% CI: 7-14.8%). The highest and lowest prevalence of nocturnal enuresis was seen in children living in Tehran 28.5% (95% CI: 16.1% -45.4) and Tabriz 1.8% (95% CI: 1.2-2.8%), respectively. The findings of the present study revealed that the prevalence of nocturnal enuresis in children decreases with enlargement of the sample size. In addition, the prevalence of noctur-nal enuresis grows with an increase in the years of research, which is statistically significant (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence of nocturnal enuresis in the current study, health policy makers need to raise the awareness of families by taking efficient and effective policies. Background: Adolescents' addiction to internet is a serious problem worldwide, especially in the developing countries. Objectives: The current study aimed at estimating the prevalence of internet addiction (IA) and its relationship with interpersonal communication skills (ICS) and socio-educational factors among high school students in Tabriz, Northwest of Iran. Methods: In the current cross sectional study, a total of 2416 students were selected as a study sample size in 2010. The data were collected using a valid and reliable self-administered questionnaire. The direct standardization method was employed to calculate IA prevalence. Results: The prevalence of IA was 52.1% in males and 37.0% in females. The standardized prevalence of IA among the study sample was 45.8%. The results of logistic regression analysis suggested the association of the gender (odd ratios = 1.91) and ICS scores (OR = 0.97) with IA. Conclusions: The prevalence of IA among adolescents in the Northwest of Iran was high. Males were at higher risk of IA than their female counterparts. Background: Intention to smoking is a strong predictor of future smoking behavior. The aim of this study is identifying the personal, environmental, and psychological factors relating to intention to smoking in adolescents of Tabriz city (Northwest of Iran). Methods: Four thousand nine hundred and three (4903) students were randomly selected and completed a self-administered questionnaire about cigarette smoking, intention to smoking, and the related risk factors through multi-stage sampling. The association of independent variables with intention to smoking was evaluated using the multi-variable logistic regression model. Results: The mean age of student was 15.7 ± 0.73 years, and 42.9% of the samples were male. The results showed that 95.0% of students were in committer stage (students who had never smoked and were sure never start smoking). Having general risk-taking behavior (OR = 2.90; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21-6.97), smoker in the family (OR = 2.60; 95% CI: 1.20-5.61), and positive attitude towards cigarette smoking (OR = 1.30; 95% CI: 1.18-1.43) had statistically significant association with intention to start smoking in future. Conclusion: Majority of non-smokers have firm decision to not start smoking in the future. Having general risk-taking behavior, smoker in the family, and positive attitude towards smoking are associated with intention to smoking in adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From January to February 2008, 468 sheep carcasses (335 male and 133 female) in a Khosroshahr (suburb of Tabriz, East Azerbaijan province, Iran) abattoir were randomly selected for inspection. The aim of the study was to estimate the frequency of caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) in sheep and to compare the results of bacterial cultures and histopathology of suspected cases. The mean age of the population was 2.5 years. One hundred ninety-seven cases containing 153 (77.7%) males and 44 (22.3%) females had prominent enlargement of one of the lymph nodes (i.e., prescapular, prefemoral, inguinal, supramammary, or midiastinal); these were removed with the surrounding tissue for further evaluation. For confirmed diagnosis of CLA, samples were sent for microbiology and pathology analysis. Standard bacteriological culture methods for isolation of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis and tissue preparations for histopathological sections were performed. To evaluate the effect of age on the frequency of CLA, animals were categorized in four groups: under 1, 1-2, 2-3, and over 3 years of age. Based on the results, in 59 (12.60%) carcasses C. pseudotuberculosis was isolated, and in 94 (20.08%) of the cases histopathological studies revealed pathognomonic signs (lamellated exudates or onion ring) of CLA. The frequency of CLA based on bacteriological culture was 12.60% and on histopathological study 20.08%. In 37 (18.8%) of the carcasses, both bacteriological and histopathological studies confirmed CLA. The frequency of CLA following microscopic examination (20.08%) presented a more precise diagnosis compared to bacteriological culture (12.60%) and macroscopic evaluation of the lymph nodes ( P < 0.05). Furthermore, there was a positive correlation rate between the bacteriological culture and histopathological study ( r = 0.196, P = 0.006). The prescapular lymph node had the highest infection rate with 54 (1.70 ± 0.97) and supramammary lymph node had the lowest with two (0.07 ± 0.41) ( P < 0.05). There was an increase in CLA detection with increasing age ( P < 0.05), the mean age of animals with a positive CLA test were 2.92 years and in the oldest age group 31 (47%) cases had the highest infection. Abstract: Nowadays, natural-based oxygenated fuels, especially biodiesel and ethanol, have been considered as substitutes for fossil fuels. Because of relatively lower energy content of oxygenated fuels, it is necessary to blend them with fossil ones. In this research, authors conducted an investigation on some BED blends to determine and compare their effects on equivalence ratio, exhaust oxygen fraction and water and oil temperature in a diesel engine. For this purpose, 18 different blendes of ethanol and biodiesel with net diesel fuel were tested in a MT4-244 engine 1 [1] Iran Motorsazan Co, Tabriz, Iran. considering two engine speeds in full load condition. In almost all samples the equivalence ratio decreased with increasing of biodiesel and ethanol percents. Exhaust oxygen fraction in all of samples increased with increasing of biodiesel and ethanol percents, whereas the engine water and oil temperatures slightly reduced. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Linguatula serrata is a cosmopolitan zoonotic parasite in which carnivores and herbivores serve as final and intermediate hosts, respectively. The aim of this study was to compare the L. serrata nymphal infection rate and intensity of infection (mean number of nymphs ± standard error) to the appearance and pathological changes of mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) infected with L. serrata using sheep slaughtered in Tabriz, Iran. In addition, the effect of age, sex, and season on the prevalence of L. serrata infection was evaluated. For this purpose, over a four-year period, 31,078 MLNs from 3199 sheep were examined, with 4972 (15.99%) MLNs infected representing 518 (16.20%) sheep. Collected MLNs were categorized by color as normal, red or black and by consistency as normal, soft or hard. L. serrata were found in 8.88% of normal-colored MLNs, 14.45% of red (hemorrhagic) MLNs and 44.57% of black-colored MLNs, with the difference being significant for infection and infection intensity (P < 0.0001). In regards to MLN consistency, 7.98% of normal, 31.52% of soft and 5.42% of hard lymph nodes were found to be infected with the infection rate and intensity in soft nodes being significantly different (P < 0.0001). Pathological changes in MLNs infected with L. serrata nymph with normal color and consistency had calcification of the L. serrata nymph, granulomatous inflammation around the nymph and some neutrophils. Granulomatous inflammation around the L. serrata nymph, haemosiderophage, macrophage and lymph node depletion from lymphocytes were observed in MLNs infected with L. serrata nymph with soft consistency. In addition, MLNs infected with L. serrata nymph with hard consistency and black color contained neutrophils in the capsule's wall, caseous necrotic mass and L. serrata surrounded by a thick capsule. In regards to prevalence, age, sex and season (autumn) were significant (P < 0.0001, P < 0.01, respectively).
