The majority of Iranian fig production is exported, making it one of the world's most well-known healthy crops. Therefore, the main objective of the current experiment was to investigate the effects of various types of organic fertilizers, such as animal manure (cow and sheep), bird manure (partridge, turkey, quail, and chicken), and vermicompost, on the nutritional status of trees, vegetative and reproductive tree characteristics, fruit yield, and fruit quality traits in dried fig cultivar ("Sabz"). According to the findings, applying organic fertilizers, particularly turkey and quail, significantly improves vegetative and reproductive characteristics. However, other manures such as sheep, chicken, and vermicompost had a similar effect on the growth parameters of fig trees. Additionally, the findings indicated that except for potassium, use of all organic fertilizers had an impact on macro and microelements such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and sodium amount in fig tree leaves. Also, based on fruit color analysis in dried figs, the use of all organic fertilizers improved fruit color. Moreover, the analyses fruit biochemical showed that the use of some organic fertilizers improved that TSS and polyphenol compounds such as coumarin, vanillin, hesperidin gallic acid and trans frolic acid. In general, the results indicated that the addition of organic fertilizers, especially turkey manure, led to increased vegetative productivity and improvement in the fruit quality of the rain-fed fig orchard. The accumulation of heavy metals in crops irrigated with wastewater is a serious environmental problem. Wastewater irrigation is widespread, particularly for rice due to its high water demands. This can lead to heavy metal accumulation in rice and subsequent entry into the human body, posing detrimental health effects. This study investigated heavy metal accumulation in 12 rice brands (6 imported and 6 domestic) from the Bushehr city market in Iran. The mean values of lead, arsenic, and cadmium in domestic rice brands were 0.246±0.194, 0.074±0.025, and 0.150±0.124 mg kg-1 respectively, while in imported rice brands they were 0.086±0.031, 0.085±0.021, and 0.031±0.007 mg kg-1 respectively. The mean lead and cadmium levels in domestic rice brands slightly exceeded the FAO/WHO limit, while the mean arsenic concentration was below the limit. To protect human health and reduce food contamination with heavy metals, preventive measures such as regular monitoring of heavy metals in food must be taken. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Covid-19 outbreak changed travel behaviour in many ways. This paper evaluates these changes in Tehran, Iran, from a transportation sustainability perspective. It uses data from travel surveys before and during the pandemic to evaluate changes in travel activity and their impacts on public transportation (PT) system costs and revenues, air quality and traffic crashes. A structural equation model (SEM) is used to assess the potential impact of passengers' characteristics, details of each transportation mode and the severity of Covid-19 on travel behaviour. Hypothesis testing is used to compare the changes that occurred in air quality and traffic crashes. SEM outputs indicate that the frequency of trips previously made by sustainable modes and changes in regular trips have the highest impact on the sustainability of trips made during the Covid-19 pandemic. Air quality declined in many city districts. The pandemic caused reductions in PT ridership and an increase in private car use, which threaten the long-term sustainability of public transit services. Crash fatalities declined slightly, particularly during periods of movement restrictions. However, motorcycle fatal crashes increased in comparison with the reduction in motorcycle trips, apparently due to increased traffic speeds. The government did not use the pandemic as an opportunity to promote sustainable and low-contagion modes. In this study, the optimization of the location of oil production and injection wells, the number of production and injection wells, and the economic evaluation in the water injection process has been carried out using three algorithms: PSO, GA, and HGAPSO. Optimizing the oil extraction process by optimizing well locations, the optimal number of production and injection wells, and economic evaluation can improve the performance and efficiency of the process. In this study, the optimization of the water injection process into oil reservoirs using the PSO, GA, and HGAPSO algorithms has been addressed. Additionally, economic evaluation, considering costs and profits from oil production using the best-optimized parameters, has been conducted, and the best Net Present Value (NPV) has been calculated. Initially, the optimal well location problem is modeled, taking into account reservoir characteristics and geological conditions. Using the PSO and GA algorithms, the best well location and number of water injection wells have been obtained, leading to improved efficiency and cost reduction. Then, the GA algorithm is used to combine and modify viewpoints and optimize the number and location of wells. This algorithm explores optimal solutions in the well location space. Economic evaluation is performed using the best-optimized parameters by the algorithms. Costs of water injection, oil production costs, and profits from increased oil production are considered. By calculating the best Net Present Value (NPV), optimal decisions regarding the water injection process and enhancing the performance of oil reservoirs are made. Simulation results indicate that the GA algorithm outperforms other algorithms and can be used as a robust and effective method for optimizing well locations and the number of production and injection wells in the oil injection process. Ultimately, this study assists the oil industry in making better decisions about optimizing water injection and improving the efficiency and profitability of the process using the introduced optimization algorithms. Background: Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy increase the chance of ovarian failure. Ovarian tissue transplantation (OTT) is a viable option for fertility preservation in these cases. We aim to report ovarian transplantation in a leukemia case undergoing the vitrification method. Case Presentation: The case was a 28-yr-old female in Research and Clinical Center for Infertility, Yazd, Iran who was suffering from leukemia. Ovarian biopsy was performed by laparoscopy surgery and transported to cryopreservation lab at 4°C for 1-2 hr. The ovarian cortex was removed from the medulla, and ovarian strips were cryopreserved by vitrification. This procedure used the equilibration and vitrification solutions including medium 199 supplemented with 20% serum, and ethylene glycol and dimethyl sulfoxide with concentrations of 7.5% and 20%, respectively. Before doing OTT, we assessed the tissue viability and follicular count by chick embryo chorioallantoic membranes and histologic survey, respectively. OTT was done after complete remission, following warmed tissue sutured together and transplanted on the residual medulla on the right side. On the left side, the ovary was removed completely; however, 2 strips were put on the peritoneal pocket. Anti-Müllerian hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone levels were 0.1 ng/mL, 36.5 mIU/mL, and 19.8 mIU/mL before OTT. During a 6-month follow-up, the anti-Müllerian hormone increased to 0.9, and then follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels decreased dramatically until 17.47 mIU/mL and 6.71 mIU/mL, respectively. Also, the patient had 3 cycles of menstrual periods. Conclusion: We demonstrated an appropriate hormonal profile, and the restoration of the menstrual cycle might indicate a successful transplant. Adolescence is a crucial period for identity formation and sexual exploration, and many adolescents turn to online media platforms to enhance this aspect of their lives. Given the interactive nature of these platforms, there is a possibility for adolescents to share sexual content. This study investigates the lived experiences of teenage girls regarding the consequences of sharing sexual content on social networks. Employing a qualitative method of descriptive phenomenology, this research focuses on understanding the multifaceted outcomes associated with the dissemination of sexual content in the sexually conservative culture of Iran. The participants comprised adolescent girls aged 16–19 residing in Tehran during the winter of 2023. A targeted sampling technique was employed, with data collection continuing until saturation was achieved. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data analysis was performed using the seven-step Claysey method. Through 12 interviews emerged 59 sub-codes, 14 main codes, and 4 core codes, encompassing the themes of need satisfaction, consequences within online relationships, interpersonal consequences, and social consequences. The findings of this study underscore the diverse consequences of sharing sexual content, influenced by cultural factors. These results aim to enhance parental awareness and support relevant professionals in safeguarding children and adolescents against potential stigma, trauma, and abuse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Leishmaniasis is highly prevalent worldwide, and while conventional medicine offers numerous treatment methods for cutaneous leishmaniasis, Iranian traditional medicine suggests various remedies. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an herbal combination containing Indigofera argentea leaves, Pistacia atlantica resin, and Salvia hispanica seeds in patients with zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. Methods: This study was conducted at the Leishmaniasis Department of Chabahar Health Center in southeastern Iran in 2021. It was a double-blinded randomized clinical trial involving 68 patients enrolled after clinical diagnosis, examination of smear samples using Giemsa staining, and PCR confirmation. The volunteers were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. Both groups received 'Glucantime ® as the primary medication weekly until complete healing or up to 12 weeks. Glucantime ® was administered intralesionally at a dosage of 0.1 cc on the wound's margin, with repeat injections at 1 cm intervals along the wound edge when necessary. In addition to the main drug, the intervention group received the herbal product topically twice daily until wound healing or for up to 4 weeks, while the control group received a placebo in the same manner. Results: 82.35% of patients in the intervention group and 20.58% in the control group achieved complete healing within four weeks. There was a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The herbal product demonstrated effectiveness in treating patients with zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. Kiruna-type iron oxide-apatite (IOA) and iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) deposits are commonly spatially and temporally associated with one another and coeval host magmatism. The Zanjan area in the Tarom-Hashtjin metallogenic province (THMP) in NW Iran hosts several iron oxide deposits that exhibit a close spatial and temporal relationship with Upper Eocene granitoids. Here, using fluid inclusion, mineralogy, and hydrothermal alteration data from the Chore-Nab iron oxide deposit in combination with other deposits, a new genetic model is developed to explain the formation of the iron oxide mineralization. Furthermore, evidence of an IOA-IOCG transition ore system (IO ± A) in this province is presented. The Chore-Nab orebodies have undergone sodic (albite) alteration associated with an early mineralization stage followed by calcic-sodic (actinolite-rich) alteration related to the formation of a second mineralization stage. The process was finally completed by late veinlets of chalcopyrite, which are related to potassic alteration. Fluid inclusion data show that the initial oreforming fluids (liquid-vapor- and liquid-vapor-solid)-type inclusions of disseminated ore) have an average temperature and salinity of 403 °C, 14.2 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 371 °C, 44.9 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The temperature and salinity of fluids decreased to an average of 277 °C and 8.9 wt.% NaCl equiv. during the formation of magnetite and magnetite-actinolite veins (LV-type inclusions). Subsequently, the values dropped to an average of 266 °C and 5.3 wt.% NaCl equiv. from late chalcopyrite veinlets (LV-type inclusions). These temperature and salinity values indicate a magmatic-hydrothermal ore system. Dilution and cooling of the hot magmatic-hydrothermal metalliferous fluid by mixing with meteoric fluids may have been the main mechanisms responsible for the deposition of metals transported as metal chloride complexes. A decrease in temperature and apatite content, as well as an increase in Cu content is observed from southeastern Sorkhe-Dizaj deposit (massive magnetite + apatite) to the northwest Chore-Nab deposit in the Zanjan area. The dominant element association in the Chore-Nab deposit (Fe) differs from IOCG (Fe-Cu-Au) and IOA (Fe-P) deposits. These results reveal that IOA deposits (e.g., Sorkhe-Dizaj) were formed along deep-seated crustal faults and ascending fluids, which transported Fe and minor Cu to intermediate levels of the system. Therefore, magnetite and sulfides precipitated to form the Chore-Nab IO ± A deposit. This model explains the transition of IOA-IOCG deposits within the same area, providing a valuable conceptual framework to define further exploration strategies in the Tarom-Hashtjin metallogenic province and elsewhere. Background: Evidence highlighted the high prevalence of some mental problems among individuals with psoriasis, including alexithymia and suicidal ideation. Objectives: The present study aims to investigate the prevalence and comorbidity of alexithymia and suicidal ideation in individuals with psoriasis in Iran. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients with psoriasis referred to Razi Dermatology Clinic and Beesat Clinic of hospitals affiliated to Guilan University of Medical Sciences, Rasht, Iran, in 2020. Psoriasis was diagnosed by a dermatologist, and the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients were recorded. The Toronto alexithymia scale (TAS-20) and the Beck scale for suicidal ideation (BSSI) were used to assess alexithymia and suicidal thoughts. Results: The mean age of patients was 37.56±10.58 years, and 51% were female. Among patients, 52% had alexithymia, 23% were at high risk of suicide, and 6% were at very high risk of suicide. The moderate severity of psoriasis had a significant association with suicidal thoughts (P<0.05). The TAS-20 score had a significant association with the male gender and younger age, and the BSSI score had a significant association with the psoriasis area (P=0.003). The highest score of BSSI was seen in those with psoriasis in the face and limb/trunk (10±4.36 and 8.56±8.52, respectively). Conclusion: Patients with psoriasis exhibit a significant prevalence of alexithymia and suicidal thoughts. As a rule, physicians’ reputation significantly influences public confidence in the medical profession. Unfortunately, the societal perception of physicians in contemporary Iran appears to be negatively impacted. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze and elucidate the fundamental causes of this phenomenon. This qualitative study employed content analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted in 2022. The study population consisted of 6 physicians, 6 nurses and 12 patients in the the affiliated hospitals in Kerman University of Medical Sciences selected through purposive sampling. Extraction of the main themes followed the Graneheim and Lundman approach, and data management was facilitated through MAXQDA 20. The study identified five themes encapsulating the causes for damage to physicians’ reputation: physicians' relationship with patients, physicians' relationship with the community, physicians' relationship with the medical profession, challenges within medical practice, and challenges related to medical education. Within these themes, a total of 38 subthemes emerged. The primary drivers that seem to damage physicians’ reputation include: non-effective communication, negative public attitudes toward certain physicians and medical centers due to malpractice, illegitimate relationships of physicians, gaps in physicians’ skills, insufficient education, and ethical lapses. It was concluded that several infrastructural elements negatively impact physicians' reputation. Due to the scarcity of meteorological observation stations in some areas, there is not enough data available for hydrological simulation as one of the main subjects of hydrology and environmental subjects. This can be partially solved by extracting the required data from global climate centers. The essential data for modeling rainfall-runoff of Dez watershed (16,000 km2), Khuzestan province, Iran, for a 20-year period (1990–2010) were obtained from NCEP CFSR climate center. The simulation (calibration and validation) was done by Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Identification of Unit Hydrographs and Component Flows from Rainfall, Evapotranspiration and Streamflow (IHACRES) models. The SWAT-CUP software has been used for optimization, calibrating and analyzing the uncertainty of the SWAT model by communicating with the model. The ability of the models to simulate the runoff of the basin was determined using the coefficient of determination (R2) and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE). R2 and NSE for the SWAT model were 0.75, and 0.78 (calibration), and 0.59 and 0.72 (validation); for the IHACRES model, they were equal to 0.63 and 0.69 (calibration), and 0.54 and 0.66 (validation), respectively. The SWAT model performed better than the IHACRES model by efficiently using the climatic database of NCEP CFSR center. The IHACRES model was also able to simulate the runoff of the watershed with a relatively high correlation with the observational data. It is possible to simulate and predict rainfall-runoff of the Dez watershed using the tested models for taking the measures, which may avoid natural phenomenon including flooding. Background: Congenital malformations of the digestive system (CMDS) are one of the major causes of newborn mortality, particularly in developing countries. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence, pattern, gender distribution of CMDS as well as ethnicity status among newborns in Golestan Province, northern Iran. Methods: This descriptive and analytical study was conducted on 36,156 live births to identify all newborns with CMDS, born between March 2018 and March 2019 in Golestan Province, north of Iran. The type of CMDS according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), the gender and ethnicity status of the newborns were recorded. The prevalence rate was estimated and compared using the exact Poisson method and odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval. Data were analyzed using STATA 14.0 software. Results: The prevalence rate of CMDS in newborns was 2.13 per 1000 live births. The risk of CMDS was significantly higher in males compared to females (OR=1.78, 95% CI: 1.12-2.85). The most common anomaly was Ankyloglossia (19.28%). The prevalence rate of CMDS among native Fars, Turkmen and Sistani ethnic groups was 2.15 [95% CI: 1.50- 2.99], 3.05 [95% CI: 2.06-4.35] and 1.48 [95% CI: 0.64-2.91] per 1000 live births, respectively. Conclusion: Due to the prevalence rate of CMDS and ethnic diversity in this region, effective prevention planning, early diagnosis and thorough screening are particularly important, especially in high-risk groups. Hyrcanian forests comprise a long strip along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea in northern Iran. Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis) is one of the most valuable forest tree species in the Hyrcanian forests. Bark necrosis and bleeding spots of oriental beech were observed in Savadkuh forests in Mazandaran province during summer 2021. Ten samples were collected from symptomatic oriental beech trees. The bark canker symptoms included stem tissue necrosis, dark brown to black spots on the trunk, bleeding with dark exudates and dark lesions in the inner bark. Twenty‐six strains of culturable bacteria were isolated from the samples which in culture were predominantly round, convex, smooth with entire margins on nutrient agar and a metallic green sheen pigment on eosin‐methylene blue (EMB) agar. Fourteen strains induced necrosis and browning of the tissues around the inoculation sites on acorns after 2 weeks. Five representative strains also caused dieback in twigs of oriental beech 3 weeks after inoculation. These bacteria were Gram‐negative, catalase positive and oxidase negative. All strains produced colonies with a green metallic sheen on EMB agar. Strains were negative in tests for starch and gelatine hydrolysis or production of levan. A phylogenetic tree based on concatenated sequences of gyrB and infB genes, of representative strains well as in each of the single gene‐based phylogenetic trees, indicated that these strains clustered with Brenneria alni NCPPB 3934T with high bootstrap values. Background: Data on the epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the Middle East are scarce. We aimed to describe the clinical phenotype, disease course, and medication usage of IBD cases from Iran in the Middle East. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of registered IBD patients in the Iranian Registry of Crohn's and Colitis (IRCC) from 2017 until 2022. We collected information on demographic characteristics, past medical history, family history, disease extent and location, extra-intestinal manifestations, IBD medications, and activity using the IBD-control-8 questionnaire and the Manitoba IBD index, admissions history, history of colon cancer, and IBD-related surgeries. Results: In total, 9746 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) (n = 7793), and Crohn's disease (CD) (n = 1953) were reported. The UC to CD ratio was 3.99. The median age at diagnosis was 29.2 (IQR: 22.6,37.6) and 27.6 (IQR: 20.6,37.6) for patients with UC and CD, respectively. The male-to-female ratio was 1.28 in CD patients. A positive family history was observed in 17.9% of UC patients. The majority of UC patients had pancolitis (47%). Ileocolonic involvement was the most common type of involvement in CD patients (43.7%), and the prevalence of structuring behavior was 4.6%. A prevalence of 0.3% was observed for colorectal cancer among patients with UC. Moreover,15.2% of UC patients and 38.4% of CD patients had been treated with anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF). Conclusion: In this national registry-based study, there are significant differences in some clinical phenotypes such as the prevalence of extra-intestinal manifestations and treatment strategies such as biological use in different geographical locations. A 25 m long sediment core from hypersaline Urmia Lake (north‐west Iran) was studied for the Late Quaternary depositional history and palaeoclimate variations using the abundance and compositional characteristics of Artemia faecal pellets. Sediment analysis is supported by scanning electron microscopy – energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, organic and inorganic carbon content measurements, and stable isotopes (δ13C and δ18O) from faecal pellet carbonates. The imprecise chronology of the core back to 50 kyr bp is supported by ten radiocarbon ages from faecal pellets and bulk sediments. The palaeoenvironmental record is subdivided into four periods: (i) During much of Marine Isotope Stage 3, a period of lake level lowering is characterized by a decreasing amount of faecal pellets, and an increasing amount of coated grains, sulphate minerals and reworked shell fragments. (ii) During late Marine Isotope Stage 3 and early Marine Isotope Stage 2 a lake level lowstand and a lake floor exposure is interpreted based on the relatively low abundance of pellets, which are multicoloured and appear together with volcanic lithics and rounded sulphate minerals. (iii) During late Marine Isotope Stage 2 the record is devoid of pellets but dominated by large sulphate crystals suggesting a prolonged low lake level. (iv) During Marine Isotope Stage 1 a relative lake level highstand is rapidly established with sediments that are highly abundant in fresh pellets. The modern lake level lowstand is represented by a salt crust. The δ13C and δ18O records measured from faecal pellet carbonates suggest a link with the precipitation versus evaporation balance in the lake over time. From bottom to top the linear trend towards more negative delta values illustrates the increasing amount of precipitation arriving at the lake from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene. Two prominent isotope minima during the Late Pleistocene and one prominent minimum in the early Holocene mark relative high lake levels, which can also be linked to Lake Van in Turkey. Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most prevalent form of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), with social and economic determinants significantly influencing its prevalence. This study aimed to analyze the socioeconomic inequalities associated with T2DM in Iran. Methods: Data from an observational survey in Iran, titled "Diabetes Care (DiaCare)," were utilized for this study. Socioeconomic inequalities were assessed through variables including Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c), Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG), and Triple target (HbA1c, blood pressure, LDL-C), using concentration indices (CIs) and a multivariate logistic regression analysis. Individual socioeconomic status (SES) was determined by calculating an asset index using principle component analysis (PCA) based on their properties. Data analysis was conducted using STATA software version 14. Results: A total of 13,321 participants were included in the study. The CIs were significantly positive for controlled HbA1c (0.0324) and triple target (0.1067), while for controlled FBG, it was 0.0125, although not significant. Among females, the CIs were significantly positive for controlled HbA1c (0.0745), FBG (0.0367), and triple target (0.209). Additionally, in the 45–55 and 65–75 age groups, the CIs were significantly positive for controlled HbA1c (0.0607) and FBG (0.0708), respectively. This index was significant for controlled Triple target in the 35–45 (0.376) and 65–75 (0.124) age groups. The CI for controlled FBG was significant in rural dwellers (-0.044) while the concentration of controlled triple target was significant in urban dwellers (0.0967). Controlled HbA1c showed significant concentration in both urban (0.0306) and rural (-0.0576) dwellers. Furthermore, the CIs were significant for controlled HbA1c in regions with medium prevalence (0.0534) and FBG in regions with low prevalence (-0.0277). This index was significantly positive for controlled triple target in regions with high prevalence (0.124). Conclusions: Diabetes care is more concentrated among individuals with higher SES. Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) as a prevalent tapeworm infection of human and herbivorous animals worldwide, is caused by accidental ingestion of Echinococcus granulosus eggs excreted from infected dogs. CE is endemic in the Middle East and North Africa, and is considered as an important parasitic zoonosis in Iran. It is transmitted between dogs as the primary definitive host and different livestock species as the intermediate hosts. One of the most important measures for CE control is dog deworming with praziquantel. Due to the frequent reinfection of dogs, intensive deworming campaigns are critical for breaking CE transmission. Dog reinfection rate could be used as an indicator of the intensity of local CE transmission in endemic areas. However, our knowledge on the extent of reinfection in the endemic regions is poor. The purpose of the present study was to determine E. granulosus reinfection rate after praziquantel administration in a population of owned dogs in Kerman, Iran. A cohort of 150 owned dogs was recruited, with stool samples collected before praziquantel administration as a single oral dose of 5 mg/kg. The re-samplings of the owned dogs were performed at 2, 5 and 12 months following initial praziquantel administration. Stool samples were examined microscopically using Willis flotation method. Genomic DNA was extracted, and E. granulosus sensu lato-specific primers were used to PCR-amplify a 133-bp fragment of a repeat unit of the parasite genome. Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier method to calculate cumulative survival rates, which is used here to capture reinfection dynamics, and monthly incidence of infection, capturing also the spatial distribution of disease risk. Results of survival analysis showed 8, 12 and 17% total reinfection rates in 2, 5 and 12 months following initial praziquantel administration, respectively, indicating that 92, 88 and 83% of the dogs had no detectable infection in that same time periods. The monthly incidence of reinfection in total owned dog population was estimated at 1.5% (95% CI 1.0–2.1). The results showed that the prevalence of echinococcosis in owned dogs, using copro-PCR assay was 42.6%. However, using conventional microscopy, 8% of fecal samples were positive for taeniid eggs. Our results suggest that regular treatment of the dog population with praziquantel every 60 days is ideal, however the frequency of dog dosing faces major logistics and cost challenges, threatening the sustainability of control programs. Understanding the nature and extent of dog reinfection in the endemic areas is essential for successful implementation of control programs and understanding patterns of CE transmission. We explored the significance of farm dogs reinfection in an endemic area in southeastern Iran, to provide better understanding of CE transmission and developing effective control programs. We monitored a cohort of 150 dogs previously treated for cystic echinococcosis by praziquantel. We showed that the prevalence of echinococcosis in the farm dogs, using PCR assay was 42.6% before praziquantel administration. To our surprise, a significant proportion of these dogs, approximately 17%, experienced reinfection with E. granulosus, 12 months following initial praziquantel administration. Background and Aim: Following genetic defects in cystic fibrosis (CF), mucus accumulation and hypoxic gradients develop in the lungs creating conditions for the anaerobic bacterial colonization. This study investigated the difference between the prevalence of some anaerobic bacteria and antibiotic resistance among healthy and CF groups. Materials and Methods: In this research, anaerobic bacteria were investigated in sputum samples of the CF patients (50 people) and the healthy individuals (18 people) in Tehran, Iran by culture method during 2021-2022. The sputum samples were cultured on Brucella blood agar, Brain heart infusion agar with vancomycin, Laked brucella blood agar with kanamycin and vancomycin, and Brucella blood agar with neomycin and vancomycin. Gram-negative and Gram-positive isolates were identified using biochemical methods and 16S rRNA sequencing, respectively. In addition, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the bacterial isolates was tested for ampicillin, clindamycin and ampicillin/sulbactam using E-test strips. Results: In the culture-based method, anaerobic bacteria were isolated in 33% and 24% of the healthy and CF groups, respectively. Bacterial isolates detected include Dialister spp., Fusobacterium spp., Lactobacillus spp., and Prevotella spp. The Fusobacterium isolates from the healthy group were sensitive to ampicillin, but 33% of Fusobacterium isolates from the CF group showed resistance to this antibiotic. Conclusion: In this study, the presence of anaerobic bacteria in the lungs of healthy and CF individuals was determined. The total frequency of these bacteria was higher in the healthy group than the CF group. A rich larger foraminifera assemblage from the Eocene carbonates of the south Sabzevar region (Now-Deh section) in central Iran indicates a late Ypresian to early Lutetian age. Nine species of Alveolina d’Orbigny are studied for systematics and biostratigraphy. The assemblage includes A. minuta, A. decastroi, A. cremae, A. cremae elongata, A. decipiens ayrancensis, A. celali, A. rugosa, A. cuspidata, A. frumentiformis. We have also found nummulitids (genus Nummulites and Assilina) and orthophragmines identified as N. campesinus, N. praediscorbinus, A. placentula, A. praespira, A. reicheli, A. ex. intrec. laxispira-maior and Discocyclina archiaci bartholomei. The recovery of Alveolina cremae elongata, A. decipiens ayrancensis, A. celali, A. rugosa, A. cuspidata and Assilina praespira has permitted for the first time to extend their geographical distribution outside of the classical peri-Mediterranean area to the central Tethys regions. The obtained biostratigraphy points to the Shallow Benthic Zones SBZ11 to SBZ13, indicating the occurrence of a Lower-–Middle Eocene carbonate system. Part of the age model is supported by the calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy that belong to the NP14b and CNE8 biozones, recorded from the central portion of the studied section. Issues regarding the application of the SBZ into the Middle East domains are discussed in terms of relative stratigraphic position and biogeographic dispersal of some significant Alveolina species. One of the most important aspects of climate change is alterations in the amount and characteristics of precipitation. The present study intended to project precipitation changes over Iran based on the regional models of the CORDEX project under two scenarios (namely, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). For this purpose, six indices, including maximum 1-day precipitation, simple precipitation intensity index, maximum length of dry spell, annual count of days when PRCP ≥ 10 mm, annual count of days when PRCP ≥ 1 mm, and annual total precipitation in wet days, were extracted. MERRA2 reanalysis precipitation data, highly correlated with observation data from 48 weather stations all over the country, were used for the 1980–2006 time period to assess the CORDEX project outputs. The results were presented in three different time periods, including the base period (1980–2006), the near future (2021–2050), and the far future (2071–2100). The results of the analyses indicated that four indices, namely the maximum 1-day precipitation, the annual count of days when PRCP ≥ 1 mm, the annual count of days when PRCP ≥ 10 mm, and the annual total precipitation in wet days, demonstrated a decrease in precipitation and an increase in dry spells all over the country except for the east and the southeast regions where these indices will increase compared to the base period (except for the maximum length of the dry spell). Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic disease caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus and is considered a neglected disease of public health worldwide. CE primarily affects the liver and demonstrates distinctive radiological findings in computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography (US). Surgery is considered the mainstay of CE treatment. The patient was a 17-year-old man admitted to the Emergency Department of Shahid Faghihi Hospital affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences with dull right upper quadrant abdominal pain, loss of appetite, abdominal distention, and fullness. An abdominal CT scan revealed a giant hepatic cyst measuring about 24x20x15 cm in the right hepatic lobe (RHL) with a pressure effect on the right kidney, pancreas, and bowel loops. Semi-chevron incision was done and the patient underwent partial precystectomy with capitonnage and omentoplasty. The surgical outcome was uneventful and the patient was discharged on the eighth day after the surgery with the oral Albendazole. Reviewing the literature, our case was the 5th rank according to the size of the recorded published cases. The most common countries where the largest liver hydatid cysts were reported were Greece and Turkey. The most common surgery was the open surgery and the most common incisions were Kocher and then Chevron incisions. When dealing with a huge liver cyst, a high index of suspicion for echinococcal etiology becomes important in endemic areas such as Iran. The choice of treatment for giant hepatic cysts substantially seems to be radical surgery by surgical ablation in general to mitigate the mortality and morbidity rate, because they are at risk of rupture, anaphylaxis, and so forth. Introduction: Alopecia areata is an inflammatory hair loss and a common autoimmune disease. Conducting treatment studies on alopecia areata is difficult due to unpredictable periods and even spontaneous recovery from the disease. In this study, the effectiveness of tofacitinib in treating alopecia areata was investigated. Materials and Methods: The severity of the disease was evaluated using the Alopecia Severity Tool (SALT), and based on the medical history and patient's documents and photos, the score before and after the treatment was obtained. The patients were prescribed tofacitinib tablets at a dose of 5 mg twice a day for at least 6 months and were followed for a minimum of 18 months. Results: No side effect was observed in 97.9% of the patients. After 6 months, except for three patients who did not need any maintenance dose, others needed an average daily intake of 7 mg of tofacitinib. After 18 months, the hair loss decreased by 6.45 times compared to the beginning and by 0.5 times compared to the end of 6 months (p < 0.05). In addition, it was found that body hair loss decreased 4 times compared to the beginning and 0.6 times compared to the end of 6 months (p < 0.05). The reduction of nail involvement after 18 months and 6 months was 1.2 times and 0.6, respectively, (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Treatment of alopecia areata with tofacitinib is recommended due to its effectiveness in reducing hair loss on the head, body, and nail involvement with few reversible side effects. Sheep is the primary source of animal protein in Iran. Birth type is one of the significant features that determine total meat output. Little is known about how long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) affect litter size. The purpose of this research is to investigate the DE–LncRNAs in ovarian tissue between multiparous and uniparous Shal ewes. Through bioinformatics analyses, LncRNAs with variable expression levels between ewes were discovered. Target genes were annotated using the DAVID database, and STRING and Cytoscape software were used to evaluate their interactions. The expression levels of 148 LncRNAs were different in the multiparous and uniparous ewe groups (false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05). Eight biological process terms, nine cellular component terms, 10 molecular function terms, and 38 KEGG pathways were significant (FDR < 0.05) in the GO analysis. One of the most significant processes impacting fertility is mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, followed by oocyte meiosis, gonadotropin-releasing hormone signaling pathway, progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation, oxytocin signaling pathway, and cAMP signaling pathway. Background: The common bed bugs, Cimex lectularius, and tropical bed bugs, Cimex hemipterus are the primary species of public health importance in the family Cimicidae. This study aimed to determine the morphometric criteria and prevalent species of bed bugs in eastern Iran. Methods: Bed bugs were collected from March 2021 to June 2022 from infested residential buildings and apartments in eastern Iran, including North Khorasan, Khorasan Razavi, and Sistan and Baluchistan Provinces. The morphological and morphometrical characteristics were used to identify collected bed bugs at inter- and intra-specific levels. Results: A total of 34 isolates comprising 127 adult bed bugs were collected from Bojnord, Mashhad, Neishabur, Taibad, Sabzevar, Kashmer, Zahedan, Saravan, Rask, Pishin and Chabahar. Of these, 33 isolates (n=124) were found to be tropical bed bugs, C. hemipterus, and one population (n=3) was identified as C. lectularius. The index pronotal width/length ratio was calculated from 2.72 to 2.94 and 1.98 to 2.47 for C. lectularius and C. hemipterus, respectively. The length/width ratio of the hind femur was 3.365 in C. hemipterus and 4.267 in C. lectularius. The ratio of length/width of the third femur (F3 l/w) between populations of C. hemipterus was different, and this difference was statistically significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that C. hemipterus was the dominant bed bug species in the east of Iran and provided more morphometric criteria of C. hemipterus for researchers to identify the species and determine the intraspecific variations in the present and future. Within the Tethyan belt, the NW-Iranian block is bound by two sutures, the Sevan-Akera suture in the north, and the Zagros suture in the south, where the pre-Cambrian geology is poorly constrained. Lower-Middle Cambrian sandstone in NW Iran is represented by quartz and feldspar dominated sub-arkose and sub-litharenite with well-developed cross bedding structures. They are interlayered with shale and limestone and overlain unconformably by Middle Cambrian dolomite. Here we describe and present U–Pb ages of the detrital zircon and rutile together with in-situ ε-Hf data from Lower to Middle Cambrian sandstones. Some zircons are characterized by oscillatory zoning and Th/U ratios of 0.3 to 2.0, pointing to an igneous provenance. Ages of the detrital zircons range from 481 to 2762 Ma, whereby the majority of zircons have ages between 524 and 1000 Ma (Neoproterozoic), and small peaks at 1800–2000 and 2400–2600 Ma. Late Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic zircons (1100–1750 Ma) are absent in the detrital record which is a distinctive feature of Gondwana-related detrital zircons. Detrital rutile has elevated Cr contents and variable Zr content (88 to 1087 ppm), suggesting derivation mainly from amphibolite-facies meta-basic rocks. U–Pb rutile ages range from 561 to 1253 Ma. Initial ε-Hf values of the Neo-Proterozoic zircons range from -10 to 20, suggesting an association of highly depleted mantle and crustal magmas. Thus, the Lower-Middle Cambrian sandstones in Iranian Azerbaijan were supplied from a Neoproterozoic igneous and metamorphic provenance. Sandstone whole-rock major and trace elements are in accordance with a detrital material provenance from continental granitoids and Precambrian recycled sediments. These results support the hypothesis that Iranian Azerbaijan Cambrian detritus was supplied from repetitive recycling of the crystalline basement and related sedimentary cover of the Saharides and the Arabian-Nubian Shield and deposited in a passive-margin setting in northern Gondwana land. Our results show a close geological tie between Iranian Azerbaijan, Sanandaj-Sirjan, Zagros, Alborz, and other Gondwana-Land-derived units in terms of Early Paleozoic detritus sources. Climate change alters the global distribution of leishmaniasis vector sandfly species. However, the possible effect of altering environmental factors on sandfly species varies by species and area. The aim of this study was to project the future potential effect of climate change on the Western Asian occurrence of the sandfly vector species Phlebotomus papatasi and Phlebotomus sergenti and the parasites Leishmania major and Leishmania tropica for 2041–2060 and 2081–2100 compared to their modelled climatic suitability patterns in the reference period 1970–2000. The model results suggest that by 2041–2060 and 2081–2100, in the coastal areas of the Levantine countries and the mid-elevation regions of Western Iran and Southeast Turkey, the climatic suitability of all the studied species is predicted to increase. In contrast, the model results suggest the decline of the populations of the studied vectors as well as the disappearance of the parasites in Iraq, North Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the inland regions of Western Asian countries. Considering the present-day population density patterns, it can be said that although in large regions of the region, the climatic suitability values are predicted to decrease, the populated Levantine regions seem to be at risk of climate change-facilitated increase in cutaneous leishmaniasis in the second half of the twenty-first century. The Zagros oak forests in Iran are facing a concerning decline due to prolonged and severe drought conditions over several decades, compounded by the simultaneous impact of temperature on oak populations. This study in oak woodlands of central Zagros forests in Lorestan province analyzed abiotic factors such as climate properties, topographic features, land use, and soil properties from 1958 to 2022. We found that higher elevation areas with steeper slopes and diverse topography show significant potential for enhancing oak tree resilience in the face of climate change. Additionally, traditional land use practices like livestock keeping and dryland farming contribute to a widespread decline in oak populations. Preserving forest biodiversity and ensuring ecological sustainability requires immediate attention. Implementing effective land-use management strategies, such as protecting and regulating human-forest interaction, and considering meteorological factors to address this issue is crucial. Collaborative efforts from stakeholders, policymakers, and local communities are essential to oppose destructive suburban sprawl and other developments. Sustainable forestry practices should be implemented to improve the living standards of local communities that rely on forests and traditional livestock keeping, offer forestry-related jobs, and ensure social security. Background: It has been proposed that a greater degree of adherence to a healthy dietary pattern is associated with a lower risk of depression and a poor quality of life (QoL). The Lifelines diet score (LLDS) is a new, evidence-base scoring system to define the quality of diet. We designed a cross-sectional study to investigate the association between LLDS with depression and QoL in Iranian adolescent girls. Methods: A total of 733 female adolescents were recruited from Mashhad and Sabzevar cities, Iran. Depression and QoL were assessed utilizing the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and SF-12v2 questionnaires, respectively. The LLDS was defined by dividing intakes of 12 food groups with negative or positive health effects into quintiles ranging 12 to 60 points. To explore the association between LLDS with QoL and depression, logistic regression was used in crude and adjusted models. Results: The prevalence of depression and poor QoL was 24% and 49%, respectively. After adjusting for confounding factors, adolescent girls in the highest quartile of LLDS compared with the participants in the lowest quartile had a 42% lower probability of reporting depressive symptoms (OR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.35–0.97, P = 0.03). In addition, the participants in the highest quartile of LLDS had lower odds of poor QoL compared with the subjects in the lowest quartile (OR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.42–0.92, P = 0.04). Conclusions: There is an inverse relationship between LLDS with risk of depression and poor QoL. Prospective and interventional investigations are needed to reach a clear vision. Background. The global rise of chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular disease (CVD), poses a significant public health challenge, being a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. In Iran, the surge in CVD incidence and its risk factors, along with a decrease in the age of onset, has notably increased the reliance on coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) as a life-saving intervention. Staged hybrid coronary revascularization (HCR), which combines percutaneous coronary intervention with delayed CABG, offers a novel approach for patients with complex coronary artery disease, potentially improving survival and reducing complications. Considering the newness of this treatment method and the limitations of previous studies, we investigated the results of staged HCR in acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients in this study. Methods. This observational study was performed on consecutive patients with acute STEMI who underwent staged HCR and were referred to Valiasr and Razi hospitals in Birjand from 2015 to 2022. The required information (demographic information, angiography result, and operation side effects) was collected in a checklist. If necessary, the patients were contacted by phone. After collecting the data, they were entered into SPSS version 16 software. Results. This study was conducted on 33 patients with a mean age of 64.88 ± 9.24 years (69.7% male). The average hospital stay was 11.6 ± 8.9 days (3 to 72 days). The mean ejection fraction and syntax score were 36.5% ± 10.2% and 31.21 ± 6.7, respectively. Following surgery and during hospitalization, arrhythmias were observed, including 33.3% with premature ventricular contractions, 18.1% with atrial fibrillation, and 3.1% with ventricular tachycardia. The average number of pack cells (red blood cells that have been separated for blood transfusion) and creatinine changes before and after hybrid surgery were 640.9 ± 670.9 cc and 0.055 ± 0.07. In the follow-up, 9.09% of patients had late mortality, 6.1% of patients had urinary tract infections during hospitalization, 6.1% of patients had surgical site infections, 3.1% needed dialysis, and none of the studied patients had premature death or need for reintervention. Conclusions. The results of our study indicated that staged HCR performed early after an ACS is not associated with significant mortality or complications. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, is influenced by various factors. Because there is evidence linking inflammation with chronic diseases, we hypothesized that there is a relationship between an empirical dietary inflammatory pattern score (EDIP) with odds of PCOS among the adult population. This case control study was conducted on Tehranian women in Iran. A total of 494 participants (203 women with PCOS in the case group and 291 healthy people in the control group), aged 18 to 45 years, were recruited for the study. Demographic information, anthropometric indices, physical activity level, and dietary intake were collected by a trained nutritionist. EDIP score was calculated to estimate overall dietary inflammatory potential based on 18 food groups. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS version 19. Based on the results, the mean age of participants in the case and control groups were 28.98 ± 5.43 and 30.15 ± 6.21 years, respectively. Individuals with PCOS had a significantly higher difference in EDIP score compared with healthy participants (2.03 ± 1.13 vs 1.70 ± 0.93, P <.001). Also, the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval for the risk of PCOS across quartiles of EDIP showed a significant direct relationship (P =.003). In conclusion, our study showed that there was a direct association between PCOS risk and EDIP score. Findings suggest that inflammatory index might be a potential mechanism linking diet and PCOS development. The aim of this study was to investigate the symbiotic relationship between arbuscular mycorrhizae (Funneliformis mosseae) and the ability of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) to mitigate urban traffic pollution. A factorial experiment with three replications and three factors (inoculated/non-inoculated with G. mosseae, traffic volume, and pot type) was conducted in Shiraz, a metropolis in south-central Iran. Inoculation with F. mosseae led to a 33% increase in root weight and a 20% increase in root length under a traffic volume of 4,200 Vehicles/H. Additionally, as traffic volume increased, stem length and dry weight of the entire plant inoculated with the fungus increased by 8.33% and 29.53%, respectively. The presence of fungus in the rosemary plant decreased the accumulation of Cd and increased the accumulation of Pb by 12.82% and 55.82%, respectively under traffic conditions of 4,200 Vehicles/H. The transfer factor (TF) of Cd and Pb in rosemary plant inoculated under these traffic conditions decreased by 25.74% and 25.24%, respectively. These findings indicate that mycorrhiza-inoculated rosemary plants can thrive in Cd- and Pb-contaminated soils, effectively remediating heavy metals, particularly Pb, with a TF >1. The Late Albian- Early Turonian Formation is the second-largest carbonate reservoir in the South and Southwest of Iran hosting significant accumulations of hydrocarbons deposited on the edge of the Neotethys. The purpose of this study is to analyze the sequence stratigraphy and Milankovitch cycles of the Sarvak Formation in three wells of the Anaran exploration block by using the Maximum Entropy Spectral Analysis (MESA) of gamma ray logs and integration with core studies to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the formation. The study of 353 microscopic samples led to the identification of 8 microfacies including (a) mudstone to oligostigenid wackestone with benthic and pelagic foraminifera, (b) packstone-rudstone, (c) rudistic with benthic foraminifers, (d) bioclast intraclast, (e) grainstone with benthic foraminifers, (f) peloid Wackestone to peloid wackestone with low benthic foraminifera diversity, (g) Peloid packstone with diverse benthic Foraminifers and (h) Bioclast Wackestone, which are distributed in three facies belts ranging from lagoon to shoal and open marine settings. In addition to four third-order sedimentary sequences were also identified based on facies changes combined with the Prediction Error Filter Analysis (PEFA), Integrated Prediction Error Filter Analysis (INPEFA) diagrams. Examining the Milankovitch cycles based on the analysis of the distances between gamma peaks and MESA revealed 100 thousand year cycles. Orbital dating according to the counting of the Milankovitch cycles indicates the equivalent age of 11 to 12 million years for the Sarvak Formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of a spiritual care program (SCP), on the body image and resilience of second-degree burn patients in Iran. In this semi-experimental study, 60 patients with second-degree burns were selected in the Tehran Mottahari Burns Hospital, Iran in 2022. These patients were divided through random allocation into two intervention and control groups. The patients of both groups filled out Beck's self-esteem Test (BSCT) and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) before, immediately, and 3 months after the intervention. In the intervention group, SCP was performed for eight sessions over two weeks. Firstly, the 4D Model of Spiritual Health and Well-Being was examined, then two one-hour sessions were held with each patient about each dimension, with a total of four dimensions including eight sessions, in which these dimensions were examined and discussed. There was no difference in the score of body image (P = 0.326) and resilience (P = 0.597) before intervention in the control and intervention groups. However, the mean of body image score in the intervention group immediately (109.56 ± 4.86) and 3 months after (109.16 ± 6.06) the intervention was significant, respectively. Also, the mean of resilience score in the intervention group was significant immediately (85.86 ± 6.78) and 3 months after the intervention (85.73 ± 6.27). The Kolijan bauxite deposit (southeast Mahabad, northwestern Iran) mainly contains aluminum-bearing iron ores and was deposited in karstic depressions and sinkholes of the middle Permian carbonate rocks of the Ruteh Formation. Based on microscopic observations, the aluminum-bearing iron ores were allogenic in origin. According to XRD and SEM-EDS analyses, hematite and goethite are their main constituents, accompanied by lesser amounts of kaolinite, illite, amesite, boehmite, rutile, anatase, calcite, pyrolusite, crandallite, and parisite-(Ce). Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are indicative of fractionation and enrichment of LREE (La–Eu) compared to HREE (Gd–Lu), along with positive Eu and Ce anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 2.29–5.65; Ce/Ce* = 3.63–5.22). Positive Ce anomalies can be attributed to the role of carbonate bedrock as a geochemical barrier and the precipitation of parisite-(Ce). A strong positive correlation between Eu/Eu* and Ce/Ce* (r = 0.84) indicates that Eu anomalies, similar to Ce anomalies, are closely dependent on an alkaline pH. The distribution and fractionation of elements in the iron ores were controlled by a number of factors, including the pH of the environment in which they formed, wet climatic conditions, adsorption, isomorphic substitution, scavenging, co-precipitation, fluctuations of the groundwater table level, and the role of carbonate bedrock as a geochemical barrier. Purpose: Recent evidence suggests that adherence to dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet can be effective in managing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We investigated the effect of DASH diet on hepatic fibrosis, steatosis and liver enzymes in patients with NAFLD. Methods: This 12-week randomized controlled trial was conducted among seventy patients with NAFLD who were randomly assigned into two groups including intervention group (DASH diet containing 50–55% carbohydrate, 15–20% protein, and 30% total fat) and the control group (a healthy diet containing 50–55% carbohydrate, 15–20% protein, and 30% total fat). Both diets were calorie-restricted (500–700 kcal lower than the energy requirement). The primary outcomes included hepatic fibrosis, hepatic steatosis, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT). Results: At the baseline, there was no significant difference between two groups in the level of hepatic fibrosis (P = 0.63), hepatic steatosis (P = 0.53), ALT (P = 0.93), AST (P = 0.18) and GGT (P = 0.76). A significant reduction was found in the intervention group compared to the control group in hepatic fibrosis (23 grades reduction vs. 7 grades reduction; P = 0.008) and hepatic steatosis (31 grades reduction vs. 9 grades reduction; P = 0.03) after intervention. In addition, a significant change was observed in the intervention group compared to control group in ALT (– 8.50 ± 8.98 vs. – 2.09 ± 7.29; P = 0.002), and AST (– 5.79 ± 6.83 vs. – 0.51 ± 6.62; P = 0.002). Conclusions: Adherence to DASH diet may be effective in management of NAFLD. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are environmental contaminants with unfavorable impacts on human health and nature. This study aimed to determine the PFOA and PFOS concentration in water and fish samples from Karun, the largest river in Iran. According to the results, the PFOA and PFOS in water samples were 5.81–69.26 ng/L and not detected (n.d.)–35.12 ng/L, respectively. The dry season displayed higher concentrations in water samples than in the wet season. The maximum PFOS concentration measured was related to Barbus barbules sp. (27.89 ng/g). The human health risk assessment indicated minor risks (hazard ratio, HR < 1) from PFOA and PFOS through consuming contaminated drinking water and fish. Only HR value of PFOS in downstream area exceeded slightly 1.0, indicating potential health risk due to consumption of the river fish. The aim of this study is to investigate death anxiety (DA) and related factors among critical care nurses. Using a cross-sectional research design, 325 critical care nurses in eight hospitals in Iran enrolled in the study. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that deputy head nurse (OR = 18.299; CI: 1.764–189.817; p =.015), shift morning fixed (OR = 8.061; CI: 1.503–43.243; p =.015), surviving parents (OR = 3.281; CI: 1.072–10.037; p =.037), number of children (OR = 1.866; CI: 1.157–3.010; p =.011), years of working experience (OR = 1.143; CI: 1.048–1.246; p =.003), number of end-of-life patient care in the last 3 months (OR =.900; CI:.828–0.977; p =.012), age (OR =.809; CI:.732–.893; p <.001), CCU nurses (OR =.250; CI:.100–.628; p =.003), and mild stressful life events (SLEs) (OR =.167; CI:.046–.611; p =.007) were significantly related to high DA. Beginning in 2016 Iran's naval posture in the Persian Gulf changed from a defensive-offensive strategy, which had been in effect since 2001, to an offensive one. This was reinforced in 2019–2020, when, in response to the Trump administration, Iranian military strategists determined that any potential confrontation with the country's adversaries is likely to take place at sea rather than on land or in the air. After the end of the Iran–Iraq war, Iran's naval strategies can be divided into three, each coinciding with different periods: defensive (1988–2001), defensive-offensive (2001–2016) and offensive (since 2016). The intensification of the US military presence in the Persian Gulf and issuing threats against Iran have played a central role Tehran's adoption of an offensive naval strategy. Features of this new strategy include the development of ballistic and cruise missile programmes; development and deployment of drones in naval manoeuvres; the use of air defence in supporting naval operations; deepening Iran's military presence in Persian Gulf islands; ensuring the ability to disrupt the flow of energy; conducting naval manoeuvres in collaboration with trans-regional powers and continued use of proxy warfare. The problem of becoming a member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has been an ongoing issue in the Iranian policymaking environment since 2009. One significant aspect of this issue is the FATF-related success or failure narratives from the perspective of policymaking. The current study uses the narrative method to analyse the stories defending and refuting the FATF Recommendations Bill in the Islamic Parliament of Iran (IPI). Two major competing narratives have been presented in the IPI by the two main Iranian political factions: the Principlists and the Reformists. The Principlists see the passage of the Bill as a failure, whereas the Reformists consider it to be a policy success. To gain a better position, both narratives have employed specific settings, characterisation, and emplotment. The findings demonstrate that the 'failure narrative' constructed by the Principlists is dominant as it has a better setting and characterisation than the 'success narrative' advocated by the Reformists. Although the 'success narrative' frames a better emplotment structure compared to the 'failure narrative', the 'failure narrative' is more forethoughtful and prudent as it uses conditional propositions in its emplotment, paving the way for the approval of the Bill in the future based on revolutionary rationality or expediency. A growing number of studies show that transgender people are at higher risk for psychiatric morbidities. This increased vulnerability can result from the discrimination, violence, and other forms of stigma transgender people experience. Several studies have assessed the stigma by studying the public attitudes and beliefs towards transgender people. Using the Genderism and Transphobia Scale, we evaluated how citizens of a metropolitan city in Iran think and feel about transgender people. A total number of 1202 participants, with a mean age of 41.57 years ± 13.41 (27.4% cisgender men and 72.6% cisgender women), were recruited via a random cluster sampling. Demographic data and socioeconomic status were collected for all the participants. The findings showed a notable level of transphobia. Participants identifying as men, being single, personally acquainted with a transgender individual, possessing a higher education, and having a higher socioeconomic standing displayed significantly more positive views towards transgender people. Iranian transgender people, living under a theocratic state, experience more challenges compared to those live in Western countries. Our findings demonstrate that educational level accounted for much of the variance in transgender attitudes. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted healthcare services worldwide, including bariatric surgery. There is a concern that the pandemic-induced stay-at-home orders and social restrictions may negatively affect weight reduction outcomes post-bariatric surgery. This study aimed to examine the impact of the COVID-19 on weight loss up to six months after three types of bariatric surgeries including One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB), RY Gastric Bypass (RYGB), and Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) before and two time periods during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using data from a comprehensive database of bariatric surgery patients in Iran. We recruited 882 patients who underwent bariatric surgery from the initiation of COVID-19 to 6 months before public vaccination (Time period 3); among them, 311 patients underwent surgery in the first six months of the pandemic (Time period 2). These patients were compared with 1368 ones in the control group who completed their 6 months follow-up before the pandemic. The study compared the BMI reduction, excess weight loss (EWL), and total weight loss (TWL) outcomes between these groups using Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) with gamma distribution to adjust for factors that were unevenly distributed across the groups. Results: The age of participants in time periods 2 and 3 had a mean (standard deviation) of 38.97 (10.99) and 38.84 (10.71), respectively. In all groups, the majority of patients were females, accounting for 76.02%, 71.06%, and 75.74% for the control group and time periods 2 and 3, respectively. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of weight reduction, as measured by BMI reduction, EWL, and TWL (related P values: 0.283, 0.465 and 0.169). Regression analysis indicated that higher baseline BMI values were associated with greater BMI reduction (0.04, 95% CI: 0.03–0.05), but this did not translate to higher EWL or TWL. Males showed greater BMI reduction (0.33, 95% CI: 0.18–0.49) and EWL (1.58, 95% CI: 0.79–2.37) than females, while females achieved higher TWL compared to males. Among different types of surgery, the OAGB resulted in more weight reduction among patients in the study. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study reveals that bariatric surgery remains effective for weight reduction during the first 6 months of the pandemic in Iran. Implementation of pandemic protocols ensures comparable efficacy to non-pandemic times. However, caution is needed in generalizing results beyond our specific context due to study limitations. The diapriid genus, Miota Foerster (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae) is discovered for the first time from the Middle East area, represented by four species in Iran. The specimens were collected using Malaise traps during 2011-2018 in northern Iran. Four newly recorded species were Miota fungorum (Kieffer, 1910), M. monilicornis (Kieffer, 1910), M. polita (Thomson, 1858) and M. thomsoni Wall, 1998. Background and Objectives: The role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in tuberculosis infection is well established. As microRNAs are able to change expression profiles according to different conditions, they can be useful biomarkers. Iranians and Afghans with tuberculosis were studied for three immune-related miRNAs (miR-let-7f, miR-125a, and miR-125b). Materials and Methods: A total of 60 Iranian and Afghan patients with active pulmonary TB were enrolled in the Pulmonary Department of the Pasteur Institute of Iran. Serum and sputum samples were collected simultaneously from all participants. A Real-time PCR was conducted to detect differentially expressed miRNAs. Results: Iranian (P<0.0001) and Afghan (P<0.0001) serum samples and Afghan (P<0.0001) sputum samples overexpressed miR-125a, whereas Iranian sputum samples showed downregulation (P=0.0039). In both Iranian (P<0.0001; P=0.0007) and Afghan (P<0.0001; P<0.0001) serum and sputum samples, miR-125b was overexpressed. Furthermore, miR-let-7f downregulation was observed in serum and sputum samples (P<0.0001), whereas Iranian sputum samples had no statistically significant differences (P=0.348). Conclusion: Overexpression of miR-125a and miR-125b has been detected in Iranian and Afghan samples. In both races, miR-let-7f downregulation has been confirmed. Identification of miRNA profiles under different conditions opens the door to evaluating potential new biomarkers for diagnosis, disease monitoring, and therapeutic markers in TB infection. Background: Diabetes as the leading cause of mortality and morbidity, have been increased by about 35% from 2011 to 2015 worldwide. The objective of this study was to assess the trend and pattern of diabetes and prediabetes prevalence in Iran and also evaluate the diagnosis and status of diabetes management. Methods: The results of this study are extracted from the National Stepwise approach to non-communicable disease risk factor surveillance (STEPS), conducted in 2007, 2011, 2016, and 2021 in Iran. We evaluated all obtained data by questionnaires (demographic, epidemiologic, risk-related behavioral data), physical measurements, and laboratory measures. Results: The prevalence of diabetes almost doubled from 2007 to 2021 among adults 25 years old and above. Diabetes prevalence increased from 10.85% (95% CI:10.30–11.40) in 2016 to 14.15% (13.42–14.87) in 2021. Prediabetes prevalence increased from 18.11% (17.46- 18,76) in 2016 to 24.81% (23.88–25.74) in 2021. Diabetes diagnosis stayed constant hence; diabetes coverage improved from 56.87% (54.21–59.52) to 65.04% (62.40- 67.69). Despite an enhancement in diabetes diagnosis and coverage, diabetes effective care did not improve significantly during 2016 and 2021, with a number of 35.98% (32.60- 39.36) in 2016 and 31.35% (28.20- 34.51) in 2021. Conclusion: The prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in Iran is almost doubled during the past 14 years. Although, several health policies had been developed to improve the screening and quality of diabetes care; there are still significant gaps in the effective control of diabetes. The highest quality pomegranate necessitates a tropical or subtropical environment for proper growth and development. This study evaluated two pomegranate cultivars including Rabab Poost Ghermez Neyriz (RPGN) and Makhmal Malas Shahreza (MMS) for physical traits, biochemical properties, and juice quality in their native locations as well as other warm and arid regions during two growing seasons (2019–2020 and 2020–2021) in Iran. The results showed that cultivars with the maximum redness (a*) were more likely to originate in cooler climates, and the cultivar's responses to changing climates were also different. According to pomegranate characteristics, cultivars in different regions had different fruit, aril, and skin weights. According to these findings, pomegranate fruits cultivated in other climates than the origin climate have a smaller edible fraction. The findings also demonstrate that pomegranate fruits cultivated in mountain climates have more significant biochemical parameters such as total phenol, anthocyanin content, antioxidant capacity, and vitamin C than those produced in desert environment settings. The increased titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), and pH values of pomegranates produced in origin climate than the warm environment; thus, suggest that changes in pomegranate cultivar origin had a clear impact on fruit juice quality. Environmental factors, such as wind speed, altitude, and annual precipitation, had a significant correlation with a* skin, TSS, fruit weight, aril weight, edible portion, pH, TA, phenol, antioxidants, and anthocyanin content. Background: The cancer registry system is an important part of the cancer control program. Improper coding of cancers leads to misclassification and incorrect statistical information about cancer. Therefore, in this study, the main objective of the qualitative analysis was the accuracy in assigning the codes to the pathological reports in the centers responsible for cancer registry. Methods: This study was descriptive, retrospective and applied. The data source in this study included 15,659 pathology reports received during the years 2017–2019 in the population-based cancer registry centers of Mazandaran province. Out of 1800 reports, 1765 samples of reports were selected and analysis was done on them by stratified random sampling method. A researcher-made checklist was used to collect data, and the Kappa agreement coefficient and Cohen's agreement percentage were presented to check the accuracy of the reports. STATA13 was used for data analysis. Results: 1150 of 1765 pathology reports (65.0%), did not have a topographic, morphological and behavioral codes and 410 (23.2%) had grade codes. The Kappa coefficient in reports with a topography code was 0.916 and with a morphology code it was 0.929, respectively. In behavior coding, the highest agreement is in the category of benign cancers at 65.2% and in grade coding in the category without grade is 100%. Conclusion: The most reports were on carcinoma morphology, and the Kappa coefficient in morphology codes has almost complete reliability. Background: Anopheles stephensi is the main vector of malaria in Iran. This study aimed to determine the susceptibility of An. stephensi from the south of Iran to bendiocarb and to investigate biochemical and molecular resistance mechanisms in this species. Methods: Wild An. stephensi were collected from Hormozgan Province and reared to the adult stage. The susceptibility test was conducted according to the WHO protocols using bendiocarb impregnated papers supplied by WHO. Also, field An. Stephensi specimens were collected from south of Kerman and Sistan and Baluchistan Provinces. To determine the G119S mutation in the acetylcholinesterase (Ace1) gene, PCR-RFLP using AluI restriction enzyme and PCR direct-sequencing were performed for the three field populations and compared with the available GenBank data. Also, biochemical assays were performed to measure alpha and beta esterases, insensitive acetylcholinesterase, and oxidases in the strains. Results: The bioassay tests showed that the An. stephensi field strain was resistant to bendiocarb (mortality rate 89%). Ace1 gene analysis revealed no G119S in the three field populations. Blast search of sequences revealed 98–99% identity with the Ace1 gene from Pakistan and India respectively. Also, the results of biochemical tests revealed the high activity of non-sensitive acetylcholinesterase, alpha and beta-esterase in the resistant strain compared to the susceptible strain. No G119S was detected in this study additionally the enhanced enzyme activity of esterases and acetylcholinesterase suggesting that resistance was metabolic.
