Although the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary (MBB) in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) is very important in reliably correlating Quaternary loess with other sediments in the world, particularly with marine and polar ice cores, its exact stratigraphic position remains controversial. Previous investigations usually placed the MBB between paleosol unit S8 and loess unit L8 in various locations. To better understand the spatial differences in the MBB position, a high-resolution paleomagnetic study was conducted in a loess section of the Lantian Basin at the southern margin of the CLP. The results show that the MBB is situated in the middle of the relatively weak paleosol unit S7, consistent with a recent report on the MBB based on a 10Be study from the Xifeng and Luochuan loess sections of the central CLP. However, the regional anomalously low magnetic susceptibility in paleosols S7 and S8 indicates that it is more reliable to determine the paleoclimate boundaries between loess and paleosol horizons of this segment with median grain size. Then, the MBB in the Yushan section can be correlated with the bottom of paleosol S7, corresponding to the older part of interglacial marine isotope stage 19. This result temporally reconciles the striking discrepancy of the position of the MBB recorded in between loess and other typical sedimentary sequences, and further confirms that the stratigraphic position of the MBB could spatially vary to a certain extent due to regional sedimentary or paleoclimatic conditions in the marginal areas of the CLP. In the Yushan section, the high-frequency variations of paleomagnetic directions during a long period of ~31 ka before the MBB, however, could not be attributed to a genuine response to the true geomagnetic behaviour. Moreover, the climate offset defined by the magnetic susceptibility and median grain size of the section can be preliminarily attributed to the regional geology and paleoenvironment background. A multiproxy-based stratigraphic division is considered very necessary when paleomagnetic and climatic boundaries are defined exactly in a specific area of the southern CLP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the Chinese Loess Plateau, stable carbon isotope values for total organic matter (δ 13 C TOC ) from more than 10 loess/paleosol sequences since the last glacial/interglacial show generally consistent variations, with enriched values normally occurring in paleosol layers. The only exceptions are records from the westernmost and northwestern Chinese Loess Plateau. However, both Asian summer monsoon intensity and temperature have been suggested as the principal factor affecting these consistently similar δ 13 C TOC variations. Until now, δ 13 C TOC records covering the whole Quaternary have been relatively rare, with problems including low resolution and conflicts in both the C 4 expansion history and with related climatic interpretations. In this paper, we report on high resolution, late Early Pleistocene low-frequency magnetic susceptibility ( χ lf ) and δ 13 C TOC data from Yushan section on the southern margins of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Our δ 13 C TOC data present an abstruse relation with the glacial/interglacial cycles represented by loess/paleosol sequences, with δ 13 C-enriched excursions in some paleosol layers and δ 13 C-depleted excursions in others. Furthermore, our δ 13 C TOC data shows negative and positive correlations with χ lf data, using a threshold χ lf value of 70 × 10 −8 m 3 /kg. If the χ lf data are taken as an indicator of pedogenetic intensity, and therefore an indicator of Asian summer monsoon intensity, there are two possible relations between Chinese loess δ 13 C TOC and Asian summer monsoon intensity, i.e. the Chinese loess δ 13 C TOC cannot simply be adopted as the sole indicator of Asian summer monsoon intensity, at least during the late Early Pleistocene on the southern margins of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Our results demonstrate that C 4 plants became a significant proportion of local vegetation cover only when Asian summer monsoon intensity exceeded a certain degree, for example, in the surface vegetation for the S15 and S16 paleosol layers of the Yushan section. The southeastern Chinese Loess Plateau is the terminal deposition area of dusts transported by the East Asian winter monsoon and the frontal area penetrated by the East Asian summer monsoon, and thus a climate sensitive region. This paper reports a rock magnetic study of a Quaternary loess-paleosol section in such a region. We tried to reconstruct the paleoclimate evolution history in the region during 1.95-0.40 Ma with magnetic parameters. The results show a general up-section decreasing trend of the ratio of HIRM/(SIRM-IRM), indicating a long-term decreasing trend of hematite coercivities in the deposits, which can be mainly related to the cooling and aridification trend of the environment in interglacial depositional area and glacial dust source region. The ratio, χ/ χ, widely used to reflect the variations of magnetic mineral grain size, manifests a long-term increasing trend of the magnetic mineral grain size and tends to indicate an overall weakening trend of the East Asian summer monsoon that controlled the pedogenic intensity. Although the regional multi-segmented paleoclimatic records revealed by several magnetic parameters in our study, the long-term Asian cooling and aridification trend inferred here is of global correlation significance. We present a summer precipitation reconstruction for the last glacial (LG) on the western edge of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) using a well-dated organic carbon isotopic dataset together with an independent modern process study results. Our results demonstrate that summer precipitation variations in the CLP during the LG were broadly correlated to the intensity of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) as recorded by stalagmite oxygen isotopes from southern China. During the last deglaciation, the onset of the increase in temperatures at high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere and decline in the intensity of the East Asia winter monsoon in mid latitudes was earlier than the increase in ASM intensity and our reconstructed summer precipitation in the western CLP. Quantitative reconstruction of a single paleoclimatic factor provides new insights and opportunities for further understanding of the paleoclimatic variations in monsoonal East Asia and their relation to the global climatic system. The application of rock magnetism methods to investigating the variations of magnetic minerals in the sediments is an important approach to the reestablishment of paleoclimate evolution. Thus we performed fine magnetic measurements on the loess-paleosol sequence (from L15 upwards to S5, in which L is short for Loess, S is short for Paleosol, the same hereinafter) of Yushan stratigraphic section, which is on the southeastern margin of Chinese Loess Plateau, in Lantian County of China's Shaanxi Province, and the thickness of which is ca. 40 m. Our study shows that the primary magnetic carriers of loess and paleosol in this section are magnetite, maghemite, hematite and goethite. Thermomagnetic analyses on the samples of representative horizons show that the higher pedogenesis degree of the sediments, the smaller variations of magnetization there will be before and after heating, probably related to the pedogenic alteration of loess sediments. Analyses of several magnetic parameters show a significant discrepancy between the paleoclimatic conditions recorded in the strata from the loess unit L15 upward to the paleosol unit S5 in the study area and those recorded in the relative strata of other sections on the Chinese Loess Plateau, and those recorded in marine sediments, indicating the great impact of regional geological background. Similarly, the rapid and intensive change recorded in the segment from L15 to S9-1, and the significant difference between the paleoclimate evolutions of the two periods before and after the change (from L15 to S9-1, and from L9 to the base of S6) indicate the strong alteration of magnetic carriers in the study area as a result of the alternations of summer and winter monsoons in East Asia. A high-resolution loess section in the western Chinese Loess Plateau, Yuanbao Section, was sampled for organic carbon isotopic analyses. The soil organic carbon isotope (δ Corg) varied between -22.6‰ and -27.5‰ during the last glacial at the section. During the last interstadial, the δ Corg values were more negative than those in both early and late periods of the last glacial by 4‰. The isotopic composition indicates a coupled response of the pure C3 plants to the temperature, precipitation and the concentration of atmospheric CO2. Decrease in temperature and the atmospheric CO2 concentration from the last interstadial to Last Glaicial Maximum (LGM) caused the organic carbon isotopes to become positive by 1.5‰ 2.0‰. The amplitude of 4‰ in the δ Corg variation during the last glacial should be mainly caused by the precipitation change. Therefore, the δ Corg variations of the Yuanbao Section during the last glacial period documented the large-amplitude fluctuation of the monsoon precipitation, which is estimated to be 250-310 mm more during the last interstadial than that in the LGM, and 100 mm more than that during early last glacial. The rapid changes of the monsoon precipitation on millennial scale during the last glacial have also been recorded in the isotopic variations in Yuanbao loess section. As the isotopic composition varies complicatedly as shown in the loess-paleosol sequence, it cannot be simply attributed to the abundances of C3 and C4 plants or be used as an indicator of the summer monsoon variations. The aeolian loess blanketing the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) is sensitive to climate change in monsoonal East Asia. Here, we present a multi-proxy climatic record from a Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequence from the Lantian Basin on the southern margin of the CLP. The measurements include magnetic susceptibility and related magnetic properties, bulk median grain-size, color reflectance, and the color-inferred hematite versus goethite ratio (Hm/Gt). A long-term aridification and cooling trend during the interval from ca 2.22–0.43 Ma is indicated by two magnetic grain-size proxies, corresponding to the global climatic cooling of the late Cenozoic. In addition, at least four intervals of climatic extremes are evident in the record of Hm/Gt ratio: at 1.71–1.65 Ma, 1.26–1.24 Ma, 0.94–0.86 Ma, and 0.62–0.48 Ma. These intervals are characterized by distinct regional climates, which contrast with the global climatic conditions represented in marine sediments. For example, a relatively arid climate is documented from 1.71 to 1.65 Ma, which was rapidly succeeded by a relatively humid climate which is associated with the earliest hominin (with an age of ca 1.63 Ma) in the Lantian Basin.
