This paper compares the life satisfaction and working hours of Latin Americans and U.S. Americans using the AmericasBarometer and General Social Survey. While there are many common determinants of happiness, hours worked is not among them. Differences in cultural values, especially the distinction between collectivism (familism) and individualism that has long been a foundation of social development theory, may be why married Latin American males are less happy than married U.S. American males when working longer hours. Data collected by the General Social Survey from 1972 to 2008 are used to confirm that in the United States, in contrast to many other parts of the world, there is a gradient of subjective well-being (happiness) that rises from its lowest levels in large central cities to its highest levels on the small-town/rural periphery. This gradient, which is present alter controlling for many of the characteristics that affect individuals' happiness, is driven by several cleavages: between the size. density, and heterogeneity of major central cities and the smaller-scale, lower densities and relative homogeneity of areas beyond their borders, and between the black and white Americans differentially present in those locations. An exceptionally early and rapid fertility decline was achieved in Concord, Massachusetts by 1815. This decline was succeeded by a new demographic regime characterized by remarkable cyclical responsiveness to macroeconomic and macropolitical events. The evidence for declining fertility during the eighteenth century is consistent with so-called Malthusian-Frontier explanations of colonial-era demography, whereas the nineteenth-century responsiveness to economic and political change reveals a much earlier onset of Easterlin fertility cycles than has previously been postulated. Despite numerous and long-standing research to indicate that behavioral procedures can produce large gains in academic skill development, the techniques are seldom used in regular education. This can be a major problem when a consultant believes a behavioral intervention is required. Major reviews on programs that work in education have omitted reference to behavioral technology and prospective regular education teachers seldom experience in-depth courses on behavioral procedures despite the fact that the procedures have become increasingly more practical. Possible reasons for this situation include bias on the part of journal editors, the pervasive influence of psychodynamic psychology, and the association of the behavioral approach with nonhuman research and back wards of hospitals. In order to overcome this situation, we suggest that behavioral consultants (a) make greater use of their technology, (b) increase the scope of their research, and (c) forage in unexplored fields. The paper explores the question of who is likely to benefit from social change, and who is likely to find his taxes increased. Factors determining the selling price of single-family homes in Chicago are compared with factors related to variations in property tax assessments, to discover ways in which the market and the assessor differ. Results of these factors comparisons are then combined to reveal those factors causing variations in the assessment: price ratio whose effects could be eliminated by uniform percentage taxation based on market values. The technique is to develop a hedonic price index for house values and then to repeat the method of index construction for land, improvement and total property assessments and for the assessment: price ratio. This procedure enables direct comparison of factors contributing to the variance of prices with those related to assessments and from this to note significant differences that produce variance in the assessment: price ratio. The underlying rationale is that any commodity can be effectively disaggregated into a bundle of separately measurable characteristics.

Abstract: Four phases of interest in the distribution of city sizes are identified and current conflict in the literature is shown to be a consequence of poorly-selected units of observation. When urban regions are properly defined, US urban growth obeys Gibrat’s Law and the city size distribution is strictly Zipfian rank-size with coefficient q =1.0. Care has to be taken with definition of the largest urban-economic regions, however; the fit in the upper tail of the distribution is best when they are recognized to be megalopolitan in scale.
