Proportionate-type adaptive filtering (PtAF) algorithms have been successfully applied to sparse system identification. The major drawback of the traditional PtAF algorithms based on the mean square error (MSE) criterion show poor robustness in the presence of impulsive noises or abrupt changes because MSE is only valid and rational under Gaussian assumption. However, this assumption is not satisfied in most real-world applications. To improve its robustness under non-Gaussian environments, we incorporate the maximum correntropy criterion (MCC) into the update equation of the PtAF to develop proportionate MCC (PMCC) algorithm. The mean and mean square convergence performance analysis are also performed. Simulation results in sparse system identification and echo cancellation applications are presented, which demonstrate that the proposed PMCC exhibits outstanding performance under the impulsive noise environments. In hyperspectral images, some spectral bands suffer from low signal-to-noise ratio due to noisy acquisition and atmospheric effects, thus requiring robust techniques for the unmixing problem. This paper presents a robust supervised spectral unmixing approach for hyperspectral images. The robustness is achieved by writing the unmixing problem as the maximization of the correntropy criterion subject to the most commonly used constraints. Two unmixing problems are derived: the first problem considers the fully constrained unmixing, with both the nonnegativity and sum-to-one constraints, while the second one deals with the nonnegativity and the sparsity promoting of the abundances. The corresponding optimization problems are solved using an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach. Experiments on synthetic and real hyperspectral images validate the performance of the proposed algorithms for different scenarios, demonstrating that the correntropy-based unmixing with ADMM is particularly robust against highly noisy outlier bands. This paper investigates the disturbance observer-based composite fuzzy control of a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with unknown dead zone. With fuzzy logic system approximating the unknown nonlinearities, composite learning is constructed on the basis of a serial–parallel identifier. By introducing the intermediate signal, the disturbance observer is developed to provide efficient learning of the compounded disturbance which includes the effect of time-varying disturbance, fuzzy approximation error, and unknown dead zone. Based on the disturbance estimation and fuzzy approximation, the adaptive fuzzy controller is synthesized with novel updating law. The stability analysis of the closed-loop system is rigorously established via Lyapunov approach. The unscented transformation (UT) is an efficient method to solve the state estimation problem for a non-linear dynamic system, utilising a derivative-free higher-order approximation by approximating a Gaussian distribution rather than approximating a non-linear function. Applying the UT to a Kalman filter type estimator leads to the well-known unscented Kalman filter (UKF). Although the UKF works very well in Gaussian noises, its performance may deteriorate significantly when the noises are non-Gaussian, especially when the system is disturbed by some heavy-tailed impulsive noises. To improve the robustness of the UKF against impulsive noises, a new filter for non-linear systems is proposed in this work, namely the maximum correntropy unscented filter (MCUF). In MCUF, the UT is applied to obtain the prior estimates of the state and covariance matrix, and a robust statistical linearisation regression based on the maximum correntropy criterion is then used to obtain the posterior estimates of the state and covariance matrix. Nonlinear similarity measures defined in kernel space, such as correntropy, can extract higher order statistics of data and offer potentially significant performance improvement over their linear counterparts especially in non Gaussian signal processing and machine learning. In this paper, we propose a new similarity measure in kernel space, called the kernel risk-sensitive loss (KRSL), and provide some important properties. We apply the KRSL to adaptive filtering and investigate the robustness, and then develop the MKRSL algorithm and analyze the mean square convergence performance. Compared with correntropy, the KRSL can offer a more efficient performance surface, thereby enabling a gradient-based method to achieve faster convergence speed and higher accuracy while still maintaining the robustness to outliers. To address the sparse system identification problem in a non-Gaussian impulsive noise environment, the recursive generalized maximum correntropy criterion (RGMCC) algorithm with sparse penalty constraints is proposed to combat impulsive-inducing instability. Specifically, a recursive algorithm based on the generalized correntropy with a forgetting factor of error is developed to improve the performance of the sparsity aware maximum correntropy criterion algorithms by achieving a robust steady-state error. Considering an unknown sparse system, the l 1-norm and correntropy induced metric are employed in the RGMCC algorithm to exploit sparsity as well as to mitigate impulsive noise simultaneously. As a robust nonlinear similarity measure in kernel space, correntropy has received increasing attention in domains of machine learning and signal processing. In particular, the maximum correntropy criterion (MCC) has recently been successfully applied in robust regression and filtering. The default kernel function in correntropy is the Gaussian kernel, which is, of course, not always the best choice. In this paper, we propose a generalized correntropy that adopts the generalized Gaussian density (GGD) function as the kernel, and present some important properties. We further propose the generalized maximum correntropy criterion (GMCC) and apply it to adaptive filtering. An adaptive algorithm, called the GMCC algorithm, is derived, and the stability problem and steady-state performance are studied. We show that the proposed algorithm is very stable and can achieve zero probability of divergence (POD). Compared with the least-mean-square algorithm, the least mean $p$th power algorithm shows a better robustness performance against impulsive noises such as the $\alpha$-stable noises. However, it still exhibits slow convergence rate and high kernel misadjustment. To overcome this drawback, a novel recursive logarithmic least mean $p$th (RLLMP) algorithm is proposed for the Volterra system identification under $\alpha$-stable noise environments. Instead of minimizing the $p$th power, the new algorithm aims to minimize the $p$th logarithmic cost, which makes it more robust against impulsive interferences. Furthermore, to enhance tracking performance, an improved variable forgetting factor (IVFF) algorithm (IVFF-RLLMP) is proposed, which is based on the robust estimation of outliers. Kernel adaptive filters (KAF) are a class of powerful nonlinear filters developed in Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS). The Gaussian kernel is usually the default kernel in KAF algorithms, but selecting the proper kernel size (bandwidth) is still an open important issue especially for learning with small sample sizes. In previous research, the kernel size was set manually or estimated in advance by Silverman׳s rule based on the sample distribution. This study aims to develop an online technique for optimizing the kernel size of the kernel least mean square (KLMS) algorithm. A sequential optimization strategy is proposed, and a new algorithm is developed, in which the filter weights and the kernel size are both sequentially updated by stochastic gradient algorithms that minimize the mean square error (MSE). Theoretical results on convergence are also presented. The excellent performance of the new algorithm is confirmed by simulations on static function estimation, short term chaotic time series prediction and real world Internet traffic prediction.
