Aim: This study aims to examine earthquake-related upper extremity orthopedic injuries, and in our clinic, the plastic, reconstructive, and esthetic treatment methods applied to them after the two biggest earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study and was conducted with 38 earthquake victims who were treated at the plastic, reconstructive, and esthetic surgery unit of a medical school health and research hospital in the Southeast Anatolia region of Turkey. Patient data were obtained retrospectively from electronic medical records, and descriptive statistical methods, Chi-square test, and post hoc were used for data analysis. Results: Of the earthquake victims, 55% were between 18 and 35 years old, 68% were female, 63% underwent plastic, reconstructive, and esthetic surgery due to upper extremity injuries, 50% had skin grafting, and 15% had amputation. In addition, 18.4% of the earthquake victims underwent surgery 3 times, and 13% were operated on 7 times. Conclusion: Careful attention should be paid to the treatment of upper extremity injuries that occur during major earthquakes. Delayed or inadequate interventions can result in amputation, highlighting the importance of plastic, reconstructive, and esthetic surgeons in disaster response teams. If possible, conservative treatment should be preferred for fractures in disaster environments. Amputation should always be the last treatment option for crush injuries. In cases requiring surgery, time should not be wasted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sever's disease is among the most common causes of foot pain in childhood. The etiology of Sever's disease is still under debate. The objective of this prospective study is to investigate the relationship between Sever's disease and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD). Methods: The study was prospectively conducted for 1 year between 2023–2024.Of 238 children admitted to our clinic with foot pain, 88 children diagnosed with Sever's disease were included in the study.A control group including 90 individuals was employed.Patients diagnosed with Sever's disease in the orthopedics outpatient clinic and healthy control group were evaluated by a pediatric psychiatrist in terms of ADHD based on the DSM-4 diagnostic criteria. Results: Fifty-seven patients were male, and 31 were female. While 45 male patients were diagnosed with ADHD, 12 of them did not have ADHD.While 17 female patients were diagnosed with ADHD, 14 did not have ADHD. ADHD was detected in 12 (13.3%) of 90 patients in the control group, comprising 9 boys and 3 girls. The prevalence of ADHD in the Sever's disease cohort was 62 (70.5%) out of 88, significantly higher than the control group's 12 (13.3%) out of 90 patients (p < 0.01). The high number of the patients diagnosed with ADHD among the Sever's patients who were not engaged in sports was found to be statistically significant(p < 0.01).The diagnosis of ADHD was found to be statistically more significant in boys with Sever's disease compared to girls(p < 0.018). Conclusion: Children with Sever's disease can be the candidates for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is thought that evaluating children, especially male children, diagnosed with calcaneal apophysitis within the framework of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will be valuable. Burn injuries are the third most common cause of death in children due to trauma. Hospitalizations related to burn injuries are common. Prolonged hospitalization associated with burn treatment can result in increased resource utilization, leading to higher costs. Thus, it is essential to investigate these areas to reduce costs. The study investigated the morbidity and length of hospital stay of paediatric burn patients, as well as calculated the social security costs of hospitalization and treatment. The retrospective observational descriptive study examined the medical records of 774 paediatric patients treated in a burn intensive care unit at a tertiary medical faculty hospital between 01 March 2019 and 31 March 2022. The invoice records of payments made by the Social Security Institution to the hospital in return for health services provided to patients were examined. The healthcare costs were calculated. A total of 57.6% of the participants were boys and 79.2% were between the ages of 1–4. About 90% of the cases involved burns with a total body surface area (TBSA) of less than 20% and a 2nd‐degree burn depth. Scalding was the most common cause of burns (88.2%). Among all patients, the mortality rate was 2.1% (n = 16). The mean length of hospital stay was 10.29 ± 9.59 days. The mean cost per day was 212.02 ± 190.94 US dollars ($US), and the cost per 1% TBSA was 241.70 ± 301.32 $US. According to the causes of burn injury, the mean cost of electricity was 5000.77 ± 8101.85 $US, fire 4818.02 ± 5852.22 $US, and chemical 3285.49 ± 4503.2 $US were observed in the first 3 ranks respectively. According to this study, paediatric burn cases occur due to preventable causes, and even though the mortality rate was low, the severity of burns, TBSA%, and presence of complications caused prolonged lengths of hospital stays, which caused social security costs to rise. Objective: Extra-articular distal femoral fractures account for 3% of femoral fractures, while they occur at a rate of 0.4% among all fractures. Although the basic treatment principles have not changed, the development of new implant designs for the biological fixation of this fracture is still ongoing. Among the treatment alternatives, internal fixation with anatomical plates and intramedullary nails are the most frequently utilized methods. Our objective in this research is to compare retrograde intramedullary nailing (RIMN), antegrade intramedullary nailing (AIMN) and distal femur locked plating (DFLP) methods in the treatment of extra-articular distal femoral fractures. Methods: The study retrospectively examined the data of 48 patients who underwent locked plating for extra-articular distal femoral fracture, 40 patients who underwent retrograde intramedullary nailing, and 36 patients who underwent antegrade intramedullary nailing between 2016 and 2021. Patients who had pathological fracture, periprosthetic fracture, ipsilateral tibial fracture and fractureassociated ligament and neurovascular injury and open fracture were excluded from the study. Fractures were classified based on the classification of Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen Foundation/Orthopedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) for distal femoral fractures. Functional findings were assessed with respect to the criteria determined by Sanders et al. and Lysholm knee score criteria. Results: The DFLP group included 48 patients (25 males and 23 females, aged 48.29±18.08 years), the RIMN group included 40 patients (19 males and 21 females, aged 49.93±18.31 years), and the AIMN group included 36 patients (15 males and 19 females, aged 46.22±18.6 years). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of age (p=0.727). The mean follow-up period was 26.04 months in the DFLP group, 25.9 months in the RIMN group, and 26.61 months in the AIMN group. The functional outcomes of the AIMN group were better than those of the other two groups based on the Sanders and Lysholm knee score criteria (p=0.001). Conclusion: The results of our current study revealed that all three methods yielded good results. Nevertheless, better functional outcomes were obtained in patients who underwent intramedullary fixation compared to the DFLP group. We suggest AIMN as a reliable method in the treatment of extra-articular distal femoral fractures due to preferable knee joint functions, low bleeding rate and low complication rates compared to other fixation methods.
