Abstract Evaluation of genetic biodiversity for micronutrients is crucial for breeding high-quality crops and addressing the negative impacts of mineral deficiencies. The objectives of this research were to assess genetic variation and the relationship between grain Fe and Zn levels and agronomic traits in a diverse collection of wheat varieties. Additionally, the study aimed to determine the correlation between microsatellite markers (SSR) and micronutrient quantities. A total of 42 genotypes (Iranian commercial cultivars, landraces, and Afghan and Swiss varieties) were evaluated over a two-year period. Fe and Zn levels were measured using two semi quantitative staining assays and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) facility. Semi-quantitative staining methods and AAS showed high correlations for micronutrient contents. Landraces exhibited higher Fe (63.79 mg/kg) and Zn (44.76 mg/kg) but lower grain yield compared with commercial cultivars. Heritability estimates ranged 53%-79.43%, suggesting that genetic variance played a higher contribution in the phenotypic variation of traits than environmental factors. Notably, Fe content displayed significant correlations with days to maturity. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) revealed that Zn content was correlated with four agronomic traits. Evaluation of genetic diversity using SSR markers demonstrated high genetic variation among the genotypes tested. The analysis of polymorphism information content (PIC) indicated that SSR primers had an average PIC of 0.75, with the Xgwm192 primer exhibiting higher PIC than others. Several SSR markers revealed association with micronutrient content that can be used in marker-assisted selection (MAS) programs aimed at selection of high micronutrient genotypes. In conclusion, the findings underscored the substantial genetic diversity present in micronutrient levels among global wheat genotypes, the potential of landraces for micronutrients biofortification of wheat cultivars through cross hybridization, the utility of staining methods for screening high/low micronutrient genotypes, and use of microsatellite markers for marker-assisted breeding aiming to micronutrient improvement in breeding programs.

Abstract Background Human cryptosporidiosis is distributed worldwide, and it is recognised as a leading cause of acute diarrhoea and death in infants in low- and middle-income countries. Besides immune status, the higher incidence and severity of this gastrointestinal disease in young children could also be attributed to the digestive environment. For instance, human gastrointestinal physiology undergoes significant changes with age, however the role this variability plays in Cryptosporidium parvum pathogenesis is not known. In this study, we analysed for the first time the impact of digestive physicochemical parameters on C. parvum infection in a human and age-dependent context using a dynamic in vitro gastrointestinal model. Results Our results showed that the parasite excystation, releasing sporozoites from oocysts, occurs in the duodenum compartment after one hour of digestion in both child (from 6 months to 2 years) and adult experimental conditions. In the child small intestine, slightly less sporozoites were released from excystation compared to adult, however they exhibited a higher luciferase activity, suggesting a better physiological state. Sporozoites collected from the child jejunum compartment also showed a higher ability to invade human intestinal epithelial cells compared to the adult condition. Global analysis of the parasite transcriptome through RNA-sequencing demonstrated a more pronounced modulation in ileal effluents compared to gastric ones, albeit showing less susceptibility to age-related digestive condition. Further analysis of gene expression and enriched pathways showed that oocysts are highly active in protein synthesis in the stomach compartment, whereas sporozoites released in the ileum showed downregulation of glycolysis as well as strong modulation of genes potentially related to gliding motility and secreted effectors. Conclusions Digestion in a sophisticated in vitro gastrointestinal model revealed that invasive sporozoite stages are released in the small intestine, and are highly abundant and active in the ileum compartment, supporting reported C. parvum tissue tropism. Our comparative analysis suggests that physicochemical parameters encountered in the child digestive environment can influence the amount, physiological state and possibly invasiveness of sporozoites released in the small intestine, thus potentially contributing to the higher susceptibility of young individuals to cryptosporidiosis.

To estimate the long-term effects of the Reading Recovery® intervention, a regression discontinuity design (RD) was implemented in a randomly selected sample of Reading Recovery schools during each year of the federally-funded i3 Scale-Up external evaluation (2011-2015) and also in one additional cohort during the 2016-2017 school year. Long-term outcomes were measured by collecting scale scores on state achievement tests in reading or English language arts (ELA) that were administered to students during 3rd and 4th grades (2013-2019). We were able to record and link 3rd grade state test score data in reading/ELA for 9,879 students, and 4th grade state test data for 6,345 students. Results suggest that the long-term impact of Reading Recovery on students' reading/ELA test scores in 3rd and 4th grades is statistically significant and substantially negative; students who participated in Reading Recovery in first grade had 3rd and 4th grade state test scores in reading/ELA that were, on average, 0.19 to 0.43 standard deviations (about one-half to one full grade level) below the state test scores of similar students who did not participate in Reading Recovery.

PurposeThe natural history in unselected cohorts of patients with pheochromocytoma/ paraganglioma (PPGL) followed for a period >10 years remains limited. We aimed to describe baseline characteristics and outcome of a large cohort and to identify predictors of shorter survival.MethodsThis retrospective single-center study included 303 patients with newly diagnosed PPGL from 1968 to December 31, 2023, in 199 prospectively supplemented since July 2020. Mean follow-up was 11.4 (range 0.3-50) years, germline genetic analyses were available in 92.1%. The main outcome measures were overall (OAS), disease-specific (DSS), recurrence-free (RFS) survival and predictors of shorter survival evaluated in patients with metastases at first diagnosis (n=12), metastatic (n=24) and nonmetastatic (n=33) recurrences and without evidence of PPGL after first surgery (n=234).ResultsAge at study begin was 49.4 ± 16.3 years. There were 72 (23.8%) deaths, 15 (5.0%), 29 (9.6%) and 28 (9.2%) due to PPGL, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and malignant or other diseases, respectively. Median OAS, DSS1 (tumor-related) and DSS2 (DSS1 and death caused by CVD) were 4.8, 5.9 and 5.2 years (patients with metastases at first diagnosis), 21.2, 21.2 and 19.9 years, and 38.0, undefined and 38.0 years (patients with metastatic and with nonmetastatic recurrences, respectively). The shortage of registered nurses (RNs) is a challenging situation in many developed and developing countries, and this phenomenon is expected to exacerbate in the coming years, given the rise in life expectancy at birth. Many scholars emphasize the importance of RNs in achieving quality care, preventing complications, and achieving desired medical and health outcomes. Therefore, the shortage of nurses has a direct impact on the health of the population. This study conducts a comparison between the shortage of nurses in Canada and Israel. The study found many similarities in the causes of this shortage, yet there are differences in the assignment of nurses as well as in the recruitment of foreign nurses from abroad. Further, the number of new graduates who joined the health system in Israel and Canada in recent years was constant and stable. Looking at the trends in the employment of nurses in recent years, we learn about an increase in the number of nurses employed and a flat line over the years in the ratio of nurses per thousand inhabitants in both Israel and Canada. Additional reasons for the shortage of RNs lie in the slight increase in the number of students graduating from nursing schools in both Israel and Canada. Finally, both countries need to develop the training of RNs as a result of the increasing medical complexity of the patients, which requires professional nursing intervention in hospitalization and in the community. The article also discusses the issue of increasing the supply of nurses through retention and migration policies.

Abstract Endometrial dating (ED) is the process by which the menstrual cycle day is estimated and is an important tool for the evaluation of uterine status. To date, ED methods remain inaccurate and controversial. We demonstrate how the rise of computerized virtual histology changes the state of affairs and introduce a new ED method. We present the results of a clinical trial where magnified images of ex-vivo endometrial tissue samples were captured at different cycle days, together with measurements of serum hormone levels on the same day. Patient testimonies about their cycle day were also collected. Computerized image analysis, followed by statistical representation of the tissue features, allowed mathematical representation of the cycle day. The samples underwent ED histological assessment, which is currently the ED gold standard. We compared dating results from patient reports, serum hormone levels, and histology to establish their concordance level. We then compared histology-based ED with the new method ED in the secretory phase (i.e. post ovulation). The correlation coefficient between the two resulted in an R = 0.89 with a P-value of P

There are differences in the features of nursing, in light of the transformations that took place, such as the tasks of clinic nurses in contrast to hospital nurses. This is also mirrored in the tasks of the 20th century nurse in comparison to the nurse of the 21st century; the standards of nursing are essentially the same but have been streamlined over the years with the introduction of various supporting technologies into the world of nursing. This article reviews the role of the nurse and its evolution over time and explores the differences between the nursing profession in the past, present, and future.

The role of a clinical nurse specialist in oncology varies greatly between healthcare systems, and implementing this healthcare role with its multifaceted and co-existing responsibilities may prove challenging. While already integrated into healthcare systems and services in several European countries, Asia, Canada, and the United States, other countries are just beginning to develop clinical nursing specialties. The current study aims to provide healthcare policymakers with up-to-date evidence that focuses on the diverse modes of oncology clinical nurse specialist role implementation across several healthcare systems and pertinent implementation challenges as described in the literature. A rapid evidence assessment was carried out in order to provide policymakers with a rigorous review in a condensed timescale. Initially, only items in the English language were included, and “grey literature” was excluded. We searched PubMed between 1 January 2022 and 28 February 2022 and two independent scholars reviewed items. Based on 64 papers, both non-scientific and papers that met the initial criteria of the rapid review, we describe the modes of implementation of the oncology clinical nurse specialist in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil and Australia. Barriers to implementation include conflicts around role boundaries, skepticism and lack of organizational support, as well as fears that oncology clinical nurse specialists will “encroach” on doctors’ powers. In contrast, an oncology clinical nurse specialist is found to be universally more accessible to patients and their families and can help physicians deal with difficult workloads, among other advantages. Conclusions: This role offers a myriad of gains for cancer patients, oncology physicians, and the healthcare system. The literature demonstrates that it is a necessary role, albeit one that brings specific implementation challenges.

Somatostatin analogs (SSA), specifically octreotide and lanreotide, have demonstrated antiproliferative effects in patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NET), a group of rare malignancies of diverse origin and presentation. A prominent feature of NET cells is the expression of G protein-coupled receptors called somatostatin receptors (SSTR). Although these SSTR are not uniformly present in NET, they can be instrumental in the diagnosis and treatment of NET. Apart from their application in nuclear imaging and radionuclide therapy, SSA have proven invaluable in the treatment of hormonal syndromes associated with certain NET (antisecretory effects of SSA), but it took more than two decades to convincingly demonstrate the antiproliferative effects of SSA in metastatic NET with the two pivotal studies PROMID and CLARINET. The current review summarizes three decades of SSA treatment and provides an overview of the clinical trial landscape for SSA monotherapy and combination therapy, including clinical implications and quality of life aspects, as well as ongoing fields of research.

Abstract Climate change has been associated with both latitudinal and elevational shifts in species’ ranges. The extent, however, to which climate change has driven recent range shifts alongside other putative drivers remains uncertain. Here, we use the changing distributions of 378 European breeding bird species over 30 years to explore the putative drivers of recent range dynamics, considering the effects of climate, land cover, other environmental variables, and species’ traits on the probability of local colonisation and extinction. On average, species shifted their ranges by 2.4 km/year. These shifts, however, were significantly different from expectations due to changing climate and land cover. We found that local colonisation and extinction events were influenced primarily by initial climate conditions and by species’ range traits. By contrast, changes in climate suitability over the period were less important. This highlights the limitations of using only climate and land cover when projecting future changes in species’ ranges and emphasises the need for integrative, multi-predictor approaches for more robust forecasting.

Background: The distribution of the blood vessel network at any point in time in any body tissue may provide valuable information with regard to the tissue condition, whether it is in a growth, declining or recovery phase as well as giving insights as to its angiogenesis functionality. The blood vessel three-dimensional network of the endometrium goes through a process of change over a relatively short period of 4 weeks on average. It is well accepted that angiogenesis within the endometrium is closely related to the success or failure of the implantation of the embryo. Objective and rationale: Our study aims to present a method to follow the three-dimensional evolution of the superficial blood vessel distribution in the endometrium throughout the uterine cycle. Method: This method utilizes differences in the observed broadband colors of the blood vessels in order to assess their depth coordinate below the endometrial tissue surface. We implemented the method using microscopic images of fresh, ex vivo, endometrial samples of different cycle days to obtain the statistical evolution track of the superficial blood vessel population in both human and animal (swine) samples. Outcomes: In human samples, we observed a systematic and consistent trend in the blood vessel diameter distribution at different tissue depths. We demonstrate that the magnitude of this trend evolves throughout the course of the female cycle. Wider implications: This method has the potential to further our understanding of the mechanisms of angiogenesis in tissues other than the endometrium. We propose that this method may also contribute to more precise endometrial dating and may assist in more accurate determination of embryo transfer timing within in vitro fertilization treatments.

The article contributes to a more efficient use of the theoretical, technological and application base, especially to the improvement of decision-making processes at the strategic level. It offers a methodological framework for solving the armed forces capability optimization problem by implementing modeling, simulation and operations research tools and theories.

Russian aggressions against Georgia (2008) and Ukraine (2014) led NATO into unprecedented changes in the NATO deterrence and defense posture at its eastern flank. The establishment of NATO Force Integration Units with their mission to facilitate high readiness forces deployment was one of the measures taken. The role and tasks of NATO Force Integration Units are very complex. They include a variety of different tasks across all levels: strategic, operational and tactical from peacetime up to activation of Article 4 or 5 of the Washington Treaty. Besides the main mission, these tasks consist of: assurance, deterrence, planning, information sharing, situational awareness, and liaison to Host Nation including contribution to strategic communication. The complexity of the performed tasks and their location in capital cities make NATO Force Integration Units an effective and valuable element of the NATO deterrence and defense posture at the eastern flank.

The study reviews the effect of the COVID-19 crisis on the satisfaction and performance of nurses during the crisis as examined in studies carried out in ten countries (Italy, Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, Spain, Canada, Romania, and Switzerland). The purpose of the study is to identify the scope and frequency of the phenomena reported by the nursing workforce from a broad global perspective and to provide information and recommendations to improve preparation for the future. The review shows that the COVID-19 crisis has affected the mental health of the nurses (Spain, Switzerland), anxiety, depression, and burnout (Switzerland, New Zealand, Canada, Germany), deterioration of working conditions mainly due to lack of staff, high employee turnover, and the lack of personal protective equipment (UK), and symptoms of stress and fear of contracting the disease (Romania, Germany, Canada). Also, the experience of coping during the pandemic period is seen as a deep mental trauma (Italy) and is characterized by the lack of mental support for the medical staff (Israel). The phenomena reported by the nursing staff in the countries examined caused less ability to function, lack of confidence, (to plan, concentrate, and organize), and a general decrease in motivation (Australia). Post-traumatic stress disorders were reported in all the countries examined.

According to World Health Organization WHO, Tuberculosis (TB) is the second cause of death from infectious disease worldwide. During 2021, 10.6 million people were infected with TB, and 1.6 million people died. TB is caused by pathogens belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), mainly by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb). Members of this complex are acid-fast bacilli, which can cause intrapulmonary and extra pulmonary TB, and can be divided into various lineages, based on genomic markers. The main public health threat comes from drug resistant M.tb strains, which are responsible for about 25% of TB death and treatment failure worldwide. Treating drug resistant TB patients significantly raises the costs of TB treatment. This study provides an overview of the demographic and drug susceptibility characteristics of newly diagnosed TB patients in Israel in 2021. The State of Israel has a very low level of TB endemicity and is at a pre-elimination phase. Notably, only 11.7% of the newly diagnosed TB patients were born in Israel. In this report, of the 154 new laboratory-confirmed TB patients, 66.7% had pulmonary TB, while 16% had extrapulmonary TB. Males accounted for 52% of the patients, with the most prevalent age group being 21-40. Most patients were citizens of Israel (53.9%), while 37.7% had no Israeli citizenship. Among non-citizens, there was a predominance of males and patients aged 21-40. The susceptibility profile showed a high resistance rate to streptomycin (18.2%) and to a lower extent to isoniazid (13.6%), pyrazinamide (8.4%), rifampicin (7.8%), and ethambutol (3.2%). Only 2 cases of XDR-TB and 10 MDR-TB strains were detected in Israel in 2021, with both XDR strains and 5 out of 10 MDR strains belonging to the Beijing lineage. Most of Beijing isolates were resistant to at least one tested drug. Genomic sequencing of 134 out of 156 strains and bioinformatics analysis using the MTBseq program and WHO mutation catalogue shows a good match with only 9 discrepancies between phenotypic and genotypic susceptibility profiles in first line drugs. The most common lineage is Delhi-Cas (23%) followed by the Beijing lineage (17%). Most patients from the Delhi-Cas lineage were born in Africa, while patients with Beijing isolates were born in different countries. Minimum spanning tree analysis identified 15 clusters. The study highlights the need for ongoing surveillance of TB using molecular and phenotypic tools to further decreasing the spreading level of the disease and develop effective treatment strategies.

This paper describes the methodology of combining experimental measurements with mathematical–physics analyses in the investigation of flow in the aperture and nozzle. The aperture and nozzle separate the differentially pumped chamber from the specimen chamber in an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). Experimental measurements are provided by temperature and pressure sensors that meet the demanding conditions of cryogenic temperature zones and low pressures. This aperture maintains the required pressure difference between the chambers. Since it separates the large pressure gradient, critical flow occurs on it and supersonic gas flow with the characteristic properties of critical flow in the state variables occurs behind it. As a primary electron beam passes through the differential pumped chamber and the given aperture, the aperture is equipped with a nozzle. The shape of the nozzle strongly influences the character of the supersonic flow. The course of state variables is also strongly influenced by this shape; thus, it affects the number of collisions the primary beam’s electrons have with gas molecules, and so the resulting image. This paper describes experimental measurements made using sensors under laboratory conditions in a specially created experimental chamber. Then, validation using mathematical–physical analysis in the Ansys Fluent system is described.

Uncovering the material dissipation mechanisms of two-dimensional materials is essential for their implementation in advanced devices. While graphene resonators are highly attractive due to their high operational frequency and excellent durability, they dissipate a considerable amount of energy due to significant material dissipation associated with atomic friction manifested by the relative slipping of atomic layers. We mitigate the atomic friction by changing the atomic composition of the devices through the insertion of boron and nitride atoms that create polar interlayer bonds and, therefore, also reduce the energy dissipation. As a case study, we built boron carbonitride (BCN) foam cantilever devices and studied their frequency responses compared to those of their graphene counterparts. Indeed, we show that inserting boron and nitride atoms into the lattice improves the interlayer interactions and, thus, reduces the interlayer atomic friction. In addition, the air dissipation of BCN is also lower than that of graphene. Therefore, we pave the path for the development of BCN devices with tunable dissipation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The continuous growth of wind power technology makes condition monitoring of wind turbine components crucially important for their operational efficiency. The main shaft bearings in wind turbines have been identified as one of the most critical components in the system, especially with the ongoing increase in rotor size and weight. This increase made the 4-point suspension drivetrain more preferable. In this study, we present a novel approach for condition monitoring of the main shaft bearings in a 2 Megawatt wind turbine with 4-point suspension drivetrain using primarily acoustic emission (AE). The focus was on the analysis of time and frequency domains of the AE signal, where the dominant frequency of each AE hit was identified and plotted back in the time domain to create the so-called dominant frequency map in specific time intervals for each bearing. A comparison between the two dominant frequency maps of the two bearings gives valuable insights into the condition of the two bearings. The distinctive nature of the dominant frequency bands in the dominant frequency maps presented promising potential for this method. The presented method is straightforward and can be automated and then integrated into a planned predictive maintenance programme for this wind turbine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abnormal liver blood tests and liver tumor burden are known prognostic factors in neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN). However, the relationship between biochemical liver parameters and hepatic tumor load is largely unknown in NEN and in high‐grade NEN (G3) specifically. The primary objective of this study was to correlate the biochemical parameters and liver tumor volume of patients with neuroendocrine tumors grade 3 (NET G3) or neuroendocrine carcinomas (NEC). We wanted to investigate whether patients with NET G3 with extensive liver involvement had less severely elevated laboratory liver parameters than NEC patients. In total, 46 patients with NEN were included, 31 had NEC and 15 NET G3. All patients had distant metastatic disease, with liver metastases being the most common (n = 39). Both laboratory results and semiautomatic volumetric measurements of liver tumor burden were obtainable for 34 patients at baseline and 26 patients at follow‐up. Alkaline phosphatase (AP), gamma‐GT (gGT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) increased significantly between the two time periods (p <.01). In a regression model, liver tumor burden significantly affected several blood parameters, for example, increasing AP, gGT, LDH, and aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) by a factor of 1.02–1.04 per unit increase (1% tumor burden; all p <.001). AP, gGT, and LDH were significantly lower in NET G3 (factor of 0.43–0.68) than in NEC. Here, we found that liver chemistries changed over the NEN disease course, correlated with hepatic tumor burden, and differed by histologic subtype.
