Abstract

Unbound states in 17C were investigated via one-neutron removal from a 18C beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target. The energy spectrum of 17C, above the single-neutron decay threshold, was reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy from the measured momenta of the 16C fragment and neutron, and was found to exhibit resonances at Er=0.52(2), 0.77(2), 1.36(1), 1.91(1), 2.22(3) and 3.20(1) MeV. The resonance at Er=0.77(2) MeV [Ex=1.51(3) MeV] was provisionally assigned as the second 5/2+ state. The two resonances at Er=1.91(1) and 3.20(1) MeV [Ex=2.65(2) and 3.94(2) MeV] were identified, through comparison of the energies, cross sections and momentum distributions with shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations, as p-shell hole states with spin-parities 1/2- and 3/2-, respectively. A detailed comparison was made with the results obtained using a range of shell-model interactions. 7 pags., 3 figs., 1 tab., The one-neutron knockout from ^{52}Ca in inverse kinematics onto a proton target was performed at ∼230 MeV/nucleon combined with prompt γ spectroscopy. Exclusive quasifree scattering cross sections to bound states in ^{51}Ca and the momentum distributions corresponding to the removal of 1f_{7/2} and 2p_{3/2} neutrons were measured. The cross sections, interpreted within the distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction framework, are consistent with a shell closure at the neutron number N=32, found as strong as at N=28 and N=34 in Ca isotopes from the same observables. The analysis of the momentum distributions leads to a difference of the root-mean-square radii of the neutron 1f_{7/2} and 2p_{3/2} orbitals of 0.61(23) fm, in agreement with the modified-shell-model prediction of 0.7 fm suggesting that the large root-mean-square radius of the 2p_{3/2} orbital in neutron-rich Ca isotopes is responsible for the unexpected linear increase of the charge radius with the neutron number., We are grateful for the support of the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator staff in the delivery of the primary beam and the BigRIPS team for preparing the secondary beams.We thank Y. Abstract

Subjecting a physical system to extreme conditions is one of the means often used to obtain a better understanding and deeper insight into its organization and structure. In the case of the atomic nucleus, one such approach is to investigate isotopes that have very different neutron-to-proton (N/Z) ratios than in stable nuclei. Light, neutron-rich isotopes exhibit the most asymmetric N/Z ratios and those lying beyond the limits of binding, which undergo spontaneous neutron emission and exist only as very short-lived resonances (about 10−21 s), provide the most stringent tests of modern nuclear-structure theories. Here we report on the first observation of 28O and 27O through their decay into 24O and four and three neutrons, respectively. The 28O nucleus is of particular interest as, with the Z = 8 and N = 20 magic numbers1,2, it is expected in the standard shell-model picture of nuclear structure to be one of a relatively small number of so-called ‘doubly magic’ nuclei. Both 27O and 28O were found to exist as narrow, low-lying resonances and their decay energies are compared here to the results of sophisticated theoretical modelling, including a large-scale shell-model calculation and a newly developed statistical approach. In both cases, the underlying nuclear interactions were derived from effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. Finally, it is shown that the cross-section for the production of 28O from a 29F beam is consistent with it not exhibiting a closed N = 20 shell structure.Observation of 28O and 27O through their decay into 24O and four and three neutrons, respectively, is reported, with the 28O nucleus being of particular interest owing to proton and neutron magic numbers and its extremely asymmetric neutron-to-proton ratio. The comparison of the newly observed γ-ray transitions at 696(8) keV and 889(16) keV with our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja interaction established two excited states proposed to be the first 11/2- and 9/2- levels. The (p,p′) excitation cross sections were analyzed by the coupled channel formalism assuming pure quadrupole as well as quadrupole+hexadecapole deformations. This resulted in large deformation parameters placing V63 in the island of inversion located below Ni68., We are very grateful to the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator staff for providing the stable beam and to the BigRIPS team for the smooth operation of the secondary beams. Abstract

Direct proton-knockout reactions of Sc-55 at similar to 220 MeV/nucleon were studied at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Populated states of Ca-54 were investigated through -ray and invariant-mass spectroscopy. Level energies were calculated from the nuclear shell model employing a phenomenological intemucleon interaction. Theoretical cross sections to states were calculated from distorted-wave impulse approximation estimates multiplied by the shell model spectroscopic factors, which describe the wave function overlap of the Sc- 55 ground state with states in Ca-54. Despite the calculations showing a significant amplitude of excited neutron configurations in the ground-state of Sc-55, valence proton removals populated predominantly the ground state of Ca-54. This counterintuitive result is attributed to pairing effects leading to a dominance of the ground-state spectroscopic factor. Owing to the ubiquity of the pairing interaction, this argument should be generally applicable to direct knockout reactions from odd-even to even-even nuclei.

Abstract

A first gamma-ray study of Cl-47, Cl-49 spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with 50 Ar projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt deexcitation gamma rays were measured with the NaI(T1) array DALI2(+). Through the one-proton knockout reaction Ar-50(p, 2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low- lying states of Cl-49 from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J(pi) = 3/2(+) is deduced for the ground state of Cl-49, similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope K-51. The evolution of the energy difference E(1/2(1)(+)) - E (3/2(1)(+)) is compared to state-of-the-art theoretical predictions.

Abstract

The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or non-existence. A new experiment based on 8He(p,2p)7H{t+4 n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Abstract

The heaviest bound isotope of boron ¹⁹B has been investigated using exclusive measurements of its Coulomb dissociation, into ¹⁷B and two neutrons, in collisions with Pb at 220 MeV/nucleon. Enhanced electric dipole (E1) strength is observed just above the two-neutron decay threshold with an integrated E1 strength of B(E1)=1.64±0.06(stat)±0.12(sys) e² fm² for relative energies below 6 MeV. This feature, known as a soft E1 excitation, provides the first firm evidence that ¹⁹B has a prominent two-neutron halo. Abstract

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus F28 has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from Ne29/F29 beams at energies around 230 MeV/nucleon. The invariant- mass spectra were reconstructed for both the F(*)27+n and F(*)26+2n coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the F28 ground state, with Sn(F28)=-199(6) keV, while analysis of the 2n decay channel allowed a considerably improved Sn(F27)=1620(60) keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of F28. Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed F27+n momentum distribution following neutron removal from F29 indicates that it arises mainly from the 1p3/2 neutron intruder configuration. This demonstrates that the island of inversion around N=20 includes F28, and most probably F29, and suggests that O28 is not doubly magic.

Abstract

An inelastic α -scattering experiment on the unstable N = Z , doubly-magic 56 Ni nucleus was performed in inverse kinematics at an incident energy of 50 A.MeV at GANIL. High multiplicity for α -particle emission was observed within the limited phase-space of the experimental setup. This observation cannot be explained by means of the statistical-decay model. The ideal classical gas model at kT = 0.4 MeV reproduces fairly well the experimental momentum distribution and the observed multiplicity of α particles corresponds to an excitation energy around 96 MeV. The method of distributed m α -decay ensembles is in agreement with the experimental results if we assume that the α -gas state in 56 Ni exists at around 113 - 17 + 15 MeV. These results suggest that there may exist an exotic state consisting of many α particles at the excitation energy of 113 - 17 + 15 MeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A study of unbound states in 17C by means of one-neutron knockout from a fast moving 18C beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target was performed at the RIKEN-RIBF laboratory utilizing SAMURAI. The energy spectrum of unbound 17C constructed from momentum vectors of the forward going beam velocity 16C fragment and neutron covered an energy range of the decay neutron below about 6 MeV in the center of mass of 17C*. The relative energy Erel spectrum was characterized by two resonances at about 1.92 and 3.24 MeV in Erel and a possible multiplet at around Erel ~ 0.7 MeV. Momentum distributions of the knockout residue for the Erel= 1.92 and 3.24-MeV states well matched to those of p-wave neutron removal, providing a model independent confirmation of negative parity assignments for these states. The proposed level scheme of 17C was compared with a range of different shell-model predictions; it turned out that the YSOX shell-model interaction, employing the monopole-based universal interaction for the cross-shell two-body matrix elements and incorporating larger ?! excitations, gave a consistent account of it, including the locations of the 1=21- and 3=21- cross-shell states. Abstract

A new and independent determination of the Gamow-Teller branching ratio in the beta-decay of Na-21 is reported. The value 5.13 +/- 0.43% obtained is in agreement with the currently adopted value and the most recent measurement. In contrast to previous experiments, the present method was based on the counting of the parent Na-21 ions and the resulting 351 keV gamma-rays without coincident beta-particle detection.

Abstract

The structure of $^{44}$S has been studied using delayed $\gamma$ and electron spectroscopy at \textsc{ganil}. The decay rates of the 0$^+_2$ isomeric state to the 2$^+_1$ and 0$^+_1$ states have been measured for the first time, leading to a reduced transition probability B(E2~:~2$^{+}_1$$\rightarrow$0$^{+}_2)$= 8.4(26)~e$^2$fm$^4$ and a monopole strength $\rho^2$(E0~:~0$^{+}_2$$\rightarrow$0$^{+}_1)$ =~8.7(7)$\times$10$^{-3}$. Comparisons to shell model calculations point towards prolate-spherical shape coexistence and a phenomenological two level mixing model is used to extract a weak mixing between the two configurations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

CERN-Proceedings-2010-001 available at http://www.fluka.org/Varenna2009/procmat.htm; International audience; The nuclear structure of the 31Mg nucleus has been studied with the singleneutron knockout reaction. We report on the preliminary results of an experiment performed with the EXOGAM array coupled, for the first time, to the SPEG spectrometer at GANIL.We present a provisional result for the inclusive single-neutron knockout cross section of σinc= 90(5) mb. Preliminary exclusive cross sections for the measured bound states, including the ground state, are also presented. Finally, preliminary longitudinal momentum distributions for the ground state and first excited state are also shown. These results are compared to Monte Carlo Shell-Model calculations in the sd-pf region.

Abstract

The structure of N19-22 nuclei was investigated by means of in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic technique using fragmentation reactions of both stable and radioactive beams. Based on particle-gamma and particle-gamma gamma coincidence data, level schemes are constructed for the neutron-rich nitrogen nuclei. The experimental results are compared with shell model calculations. The strength of the N=14 and Z=8 shell closures and the weakening of the shell model interaction WBT are discussed.

Abstract

The energies of the excited states in very neutron-rich Si-42 and P-41,P-43 have been measured using in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy from the fragmentation of secondary beams of S-42,S-44 at 39A MeV. The low 2(+) energy of Si-42, 770(19) keV, together with the level schemes of P-41,P-43, provides evidence for the disappearance of the Z=14 and N=28 spherical shell closures, which is ascribed mainly to the action of proton-neutron tensor forces. New shell model calculations indicate that Si-42 is best described as a well-deformed oblate rotor.

Abstract

We discuss the use of one-nucleon removal reactions of loosely bound nuclei at intermediate energies as an indirect method in nuclear astrophysics. The breakup reactions are proved to be good spectroscopic tools and can be used to study a large number of loosely bound proton- or neutron-rich nuclei over a wide range of beam energies. As peripheral processes, they can be used to extract asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs) from which non-resonant capture reaction rates of astrophysical interest can be calculated parameter free. In this talk, we present results of a proton-breakup experiment carried out at GANIL (France) with a cocktail beam centered around 23Al at 50 MeV/nucleon. Momentum distributions of the breakup fragments, inclusive and in coincidence with gamma rays detected by EXOGAM Germanium clover array, were measured in the focal plan of SPEG energy-loss spectrometer. We present in particular the investigations of reaction rates for 22Mg(p,γ)23Al and 23Al(p,γ)24Si important for novae and X-ray bursts, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A measurement of the α(12C,α)12C reaction has been performed using resonant scattering with a gas target. Beam energies of 46, 51, 56 and 63 MeV were used to populate resonances in the excitation energy range of 11.6 to 22.9 MeV in 16O. The angular distributions of the elastic scattering were measured at zero degrees using an array of segmented silicon strip detectors with a minimum range of 0° to 30° in the centre of mass. The spins of 8 resonances between 14.1 and 18.5 MeV were obtained, confirming spin assignments made using elastic scattering in normal kinematics. An R-matrix analysis of the data was performed which indicates that the present understanding of 16O in this region is good, but not complete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The β-decay branching ratio of the GT transition in 21Na to the first excited state in 21Ne has been measured. The value obtained of 4.93(20)% is in agreement with the most recent measurement and with the value adopted so far. This confirms that the branching ratio is not the source of discrepancy in a previous measurement of β-v correlation coefficient which exhibited a 3σ difference with respect to the Standard Model prediction. Abstract

The low-energy levels of 19Na were studied in the center-of-mass energy (ECM) range from 2.6 to 3.4 MeV, by using the elastic and inelastic scattering methods in inverse kinematics. The 18Ne+p scattering reactions, leading to the ground state and the first excited state of 18Ne, were investigated by using a 66 MeV radioactive 18Ne beam and a polyethylene (CH2)n target. Abstract

An experimental spectroscopic investigation of some neutron rich Mg and Al isotopes around the shell closure N=20 has been performed. The delayed neutron and γ spectra, following the β-decay of 33Mg and 35Al have been measured using the delayed neutron detector array TONNERRE coupled with high efficiency EXOGAM clover detectors, a LEPS detector and eight low-energy neutron detectors. A detailed analysis of such spectra allows one to construct the level schemes of their daughters, 32,33Al and 34,35Si. The resulting spectroscopic information will provide stringent tests of large scale shell model calculations including np - nh excitations aimed at the understanding of the structural effects occurring in this region. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In-beam gamma-spectroscopy using fragmentation reactions of both stable and radioactive beams have been performed in order to study the structure of excited states in the neutron-rich 18,20C, 21–24O and 23,25F isotopes. For the produced fragments, γ-ray energies, intensities and γγ coincidences have been measured. Based on this information new level schemes are proposed up to the neutron separation energy for some of these isotopes. The systematics of the 2+ energy has been extended up to 20C in the C isotopic chain. Level schemes are suggested for 21O and 22O. The non observation of any γ-ray from 23O and 24O suggests that their excited states lie above the neutron decay thresholds. The study of F isotopes provides hint of the possible change in nuclear structure between the F and O isotopic chains. These results, together with the size of the N=14 and N=16 shell gaps in C,O,F isotopes are discussed in the framework of shell model calculations. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The structure of nucleus 25F was studied by use of in-beam -ray spectroscopy of the fragmentation of a 36S beam. The emitted rays were detected by BaF2 detectors. In the -ray spectrum obtained a wide bump between 3 and 4.5 MeV energy was observed corresponding to a set of γ rays, including their first and second escape peaks. In order to resolve the peaks and to determine the high-energy structure of 25F, the experimental spectra were compared to Geant4 simulations taking the complex line shape into account. The observed decomposition of the bump is in good agreement with the results of the two-step fragmentation experiment [Zs. Vajta et al., submitted to Phys. Rev. C]. Abstract

Measurements of the 4He(7Be,&agr;)7Be and 4He(7Be, p)10B reactions were performed using 7Be beam energies of 7.1 and 23 MeV and a helium-4 target, employing the thick target technique. Resonances were observed between Ex(11C) = 8.6 to 13.8 MeV. An matrix analysis was performed to characterize the spins and partial widths. This analysis showed that the observed sequence of states was consistent with that found for 7Li + &agr; resonant scattering populating resonances in 11B. A comparison of the proposed partial widths for decay with the Wigner limit indicates that several of the states are associated with cluster-like structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The results obtained from electron and in-beam spectroscopy experiments reveal that the 44S nucleus is located in a transitional region between the spherical 44Ca and the oblate 44Si. The comparison of the results with Large Scale Shell Model calculations points towards prolate-spherical shape coexistence where the ground state becomes the intruder configuration due to quadrupole excitations across the Z = 14 and N = 28 shell gaps. The reaction 20O(d,t) has been studied in inverse kinematics using a secondary radioactive beam produced with the SPIRAL facility at GANIL. Fragments, light charged particles and gamma rays were measured with the TIARA, MUST2, VAMOS and EXOGAM detectors and preliminary results are reported. Abstract

The shell structure of the nucleus implies the existence of magic numbers. Since several years many indications have been accumulated, theoretically as well as through experiments at various laboratories around the world, that if one moves away from stability, the location of the magic numbers shifts as an inescapable consequence of the evolving nature of the nuclear force itself. In this respect, it is the balance between the tensor and spin-orbit components that seems particularly instrumental. Abstract

The structure of theA/Z = 3 nucleus15B has been investigated using the in-beam-spectroscopy technique with a fragmentation reaction of a36S beam on a9Be target at 77.5. The fragments were identified and selected by their energy loss and time of flight using the SPEG spectrograph.-ray energies and intensities have been measured in coincidence with the projectile-like fragments. From this information as well as from the-coincidence relationships a level scheme is proposed for15B up to the neutron separation energy. The experimental results have been interpreted using shell model calculations in thepsdvalence space. Effects of the weakly bound nature of the valence neutrons have been observed.
