International audience; Abstract Objectives This scoping review aimed to assess the current state of knowledge regarding the relationship between bruxism and changes in density or volume of mandibular bone, based on medical imaging. Methods Literature review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR protocol. PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane library databases were searched for peer-reviewed articles by two blinded reviewers. Studies based on the evaluation of mandibular bone density and/or bone volume with imaging examination in adult patients were examined. The selected articles were summarized in PICOS tables and assessed for methodological quality. Results Nine articles were included, according to the inclusion criteria. They showed that bruxer patients had more bony exostoses of the mandibular angle, smaller condyles, and morphological changes for cancellous and cortical mandibular bone compared to non-bruxer patients. Conclusion Bruxism seems to induce morphological and anatomical changes in the different regions of the mandibular bone (condyles, mandibular angle, mandible body). Given the heterogeneity of the included studies, these results should be interpreted with caution. Further studies are needed to support these results, in particular via the analysis of three-dimensional imaging to overcome the limitations of panoramic radiograph.

International audience; The virome of the human oral cavity and the relationships between viruses and diseases such as periodontitis are scarcely deciphered. Redondoviruses were reported in the human oral cavity in 2019, including in periodontitis patients. Here, we aimed at detecting redondoviruses and at searching for a potential viral host in human saliva. Non-stimulated saliva was collected between December 2020 and June 2021. These samples were tested using real-time PCR regarding the presence of redondovirus and Entamoeba gingivalis DNA. Similarity searches were performed using BLAST against eukaryotic and prokaryotic sequences from GenBank. The redondovirus DNA was detected in 46% of the 28 human saliva samples. In addition, short fragments of redondovirus genomes were detected in silico within Entamoeba sequences. Finally, Entamoeba gingivalis DNA was detected in 46% of the 28 saliva samples, with a strong correlation between redondovirus DNA and E. gingivalis DNA detections, in 93% of the cases. Regarded together, these findings and previous ones strongly support the presence of redondoviruses in the human oral cavity and their association to E. gingivalis as their likely host.

International audience; The estimation of a biological profile in biological anthropology is a central point inthe study of human remains. To specify this profile, the observation of variations, and patholo-gies on the skeleton is a tool that makes an individual unique. In this research, the focuswas on the distal part of the humerus. Through the study of five individuals from an osteo-archaeological collection, conformational anomalies of the medial epicondyle of the humeruswere highlighted. The aim is to describe them and to propose an etiology of appearance. Forthis purpose, observation of the rest of the skeleton was carried out, in order to search forthe presence of other variations, in particular anomalies of fusion of secondary ossificationcenters. Overall, a non-fusion of the medial epicondyle of the humerus, two fused medialmicro-epicondyles and two supplementary fusions were observed. These are very rare anoma-lies, with an estimated prevalence of 0.7%. Conformational abnormalities of this area can leadto pain. Therefore, medical imaging for diagnostic purposes may be available: useful data forantemortem documentation in case of a disturbing disappearance. Following the study of theentire skeleton, a common etiology for these different conformations cannot be proposed. How-ever, two categories of etiologies can be proposed: a congenital anomaly and a developmentalanomaly with an environmental influence (mechanical or deficiency). The new knowledge ofthis area will enrich the use of individualization factors, especially in the context of forensicanthropology.

The mandible has various unnamed accessory foramina, and surgery is often performed in the symphyseal area. The aim of this study was to analyze the anatomical characteristics of mandibular lingual foramina with the objective of preventing clinical complications during implant surgery on an edentulous mandible.A total of 100 cone beam computed tomography scans of completely edentulous patients were included in this study. For each canal, nine measurements were recorded in millimeters: seven length or height measurements and two diameter measurements. The placement of a standard implant was simulated and whether the implant passed through the canal was noted. The results were analyzed by t-test and chi-squared at a significance level of 0.05. Pearson correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between variables.We identified 309 foramina: 236 medial lingual foramina and 73 lateral lingual foramina. We found no significant relationship between the number of foramina and the age of the individuals, or between diameter and the age or gender of the individuals. The mandibular canal was injured in 32.7 % of implant placement simulations.The risk of injury to neurovascular bundles is increased in edentulous patients due to vertical bone resorption.

WOS:000812453100001; International audience; Telomeres are specialized non-coding DNA sequences located at the end of chromosomes and that protect genetic information. Telomere loss over lifespan is generally viewed as a phenomenon associated with aging in animals. Recently, telomere elongation after hibernation has been described in several mammals. Whether this pattern is an adaptation to repair DNA damage caused during rewarming from torpor or if it coevolved as a mechanism to promote somatic maintenance in preparation for the upcoming reproductive effort remains unclear. In a longitudinal study measuring telomere length using buccal swabs, we tested if telomere elongation was related to reproductive success in wild adult female Columbian ground squirrels (Urocitellus columbianus) that were monitored from emergence from hibernation to the end of the reproductive season. We found three key results. First, female telomere length increased at the start of the breeding season, both in breeding and non-breeding individuals. Second, post-emergence telomere lengthening was unrelated to female future reproductive output. Third, telomere length decreased in breeding females during lactation, but remained stable in non-breeding females over a similar period. Within breeders, telomeres shortened more in females producing larger and heavier litters. We concluded that telomere lengthening after hibernation did not constrain immediate female reproductive capacities. It was more likely to be part of the body recovery process that takes place after hibernation. Telomere erosion that occurs after birth may constitute a physiological cost of female reproduction.

International audience; The main goal of dental education is to develop health professionals who will maintain and improve the oral health of patients. This requires the quantitative and qualitative assessment of dental student activity. The aim of this work is to describe the ECHO information system that was developed at Timone Hospital (France) for the monitoring and evaluation of dental student activity and to present the results of a qualitative evaluation of student perceptions of this system. According to the analysis of the UML model of care-related procedures and data, the pre-existing process of student evaluation was characterized by redundancy between administrative and educational data. ECHO was developed in PHP/MySQL and designed to centralize the two types of data in a unified computerized process. The qualitative evaluation of dental student perceptions of ECHO was performed using an anonymous online Google Form questionnaire. Among the respondents (102/254 students), 96% stated that ECHO is easy to use, 86% that it saves time, and 81% that it gives them a better overview of their activity. After several years of use, ECHO has solved many of the difficulties related to the use of internship paper booklets, while also providing a documentary database of the activities of our dental department. The student activity data stored in ECHO are directly accessible by faculty members and can be reused to facilitate departmental management and research and to improve patient follow-up.

International audience; The aim of this study was to assess on videographs the intra- and inter-rater reproducibility of the Smile Esthetic Index (SEI) that has been previously validated on photographs. Smile videographs were obtained using a smartphone associated with the Smile Lite MDP mounted on a tripod. They were then randomized and evaluated twice consecutively at a 1-week interval by three periodontists according to the SEI based on 10 variables. Cohen’s Kappa and Fleiss’ Kappa tests were performed to measure intra- and inter-rater agreement. Sixty-five smile videographs of 24 men and 41 women (mean age 33 ± 11.3 years) were scored. A mean intra-rater agreement of 0.68 (0.64–0.73) was obtained, representing substantial agreement. The inter-rater agreement calculated for each variable ranged from 0.31 for the variable “absence of visible excessive gingiva” to 0.90 for the variable “absence of diastema and/or missing inter-dental papilla.” Within the limits of this study, we have demonstrated that it was possible to use videographs to reproducibly evaluate an aesthetic score (SEI) previously validated on photographs.

International audience; Purpose : Mandibular arteriovenous malformations are rare congenital malformations which require multidisciplinary care. Implant-supported rehabilitation of significant bone defect after embolization and resection is poorly described in the literature. Clinical report : We present the case of a 24 year-old patient with a right sided mandibular arteriovenous malformations diagnosed after massive hemorrhage and treated by embolization and resection surgery. Implant rehabilitation was carried out 9 years later with a prior bone graft through iliac extraction and 3 short implants. The implant survival rate and patient satisfaction was evaluated at 3 years post-placement. Discussion : Arteriovenous malformations treatments frequently result in bone defects that are difficult to reconstruct because of probable unstable vascularization due to embolization. The presence of osteosynthesis material and artefacts at the radiological level complicates the implant planning due to the lack of visualization of the inferior alveolar nerve or artery and necessitates the placement of low height implants. Osteointegration in contact with embolization products should be monitored. The creation of a case series could be of interest in order to better understand implant treatment for patients with a history of arteriovenous malformations.

International audience; Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the perceived oral health of elderly persons and the clinical reality of their oral status.Background: Persons aged over 60 have considerable need for oral health care; a need that increases over time. However, this population appears to be unaware of their state of oral health, and this may be a further obstacle to professional management. We thought it useful to examine the objective and the perceived oral health of these patients. Understanding what may influence their perception can help us to improve their management.Methods: The data analyzed in this work are the findings of a field survey carried out in elderly nursing home residents. Their objective oral health was evaluated by using two variables: oral profile, determined by clinical examination, and the oral health index determined using the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT). Perceived oral health was evaluated using the various categories and fields of the General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI).Results: Our clinical study showed a discrepancy between perceived oral health and the clinical reality: although a significant association can be demonstrated between the OHAT and the GOHAI, there are considerable variations. It also appeared that the number of teeth and total edentation considerably influence perceived oral health and that findings vary according to different situations.Conclusion: Numerous factors influence elderly persons' perception of their true oral health. In order to improve our elders' quality of life, the necessary measures must be taken for the follow-up and regular monitoring of their oral health. At the same time, all possible means should be used and awareness should be raised to improve the health behavior and perception of patients and their entourage.

International audience; In this paper, we report the first synthesis and characterisations of bimetallic gold(I)–silver(I) calix[8]arene complexes. We show that the radiolytic reduction of these complexes leads to the formation of small bimetallic nanoparticles with an alloyed structure, as evidenced by XPS, HR-TEM and STEM/HAADF-EDX measurements.

Aim The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility and diagnostic contribution of protein profiling using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry applied to saliva, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and dental plaque from periodontitis and healthy subjects. We hypothesized that rapid routine and blinded MALDI-TOF analysis could accurately classify these three types of samples according to periodontal state. Materials and methods Unstimulated saliva, GCF and dental plaque, collected from periodontitis subjects and healthy controls, were analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. Based on the differentially expressed peaks between the two groups, diagnostic decision trees were built for each sample. Results Among 141 patients (67 periodontitis and 74 healthy controls), the decision trees diagnosed periodontitis with a sensitivity = 70.3% (± 0.211) and a specificity = 77.8% (± 0.165) for saliva, a sensitivity = 79.6% (± 0.188) and a specificity = 75.7% (± 0.195) for GCF, and a sensitivity = 72.1% (± 0.202) and a specificity = 72.2% (± 0.195) for dental plaque. The sensitivity and specificity of the tests were improved to 100% (CI 95% = [0.91;1]) and 100% (CI 95% = [0.92;1]), respectively, when two samples were tested. Conclusion We developed, for the first time, diagnostic tests based on protein profiles of saliva, GCF and dental plaque between periodontitis patients and healthy subjects. When at least 2 of these samples were tested, the best results were obtained.

Methanogen cultures require hydrogen produced by fermentative bacteria such asBacteroides thetaiotaomicron(biological method). We developed an alternative method for hydrogen production using iron filings and acetic acid with the aim of cultivating methanogens more efficiently and more quickly (chemical method). We developed this new method with a reference strain ofMethanobrevibacter oralis, compared the method to the biological reference method with a reference strain ofMethanobrevibacter smithiiand finally applied the method to 50 saliva samples. Methanogen colonies counted using ImageJ software were identified using epifluorescence optical microscopy, real-time PCR and PCR sequencing. For cultures containing the pure strains ofM. oralisandM. smithii, colonies appeared three days postinoculation with the chemical method versus nine days with the biological method. The average number ofM. smithiicolonies was significantly higher with the chemical method than with the biological method. There was no difference in the delay of observation of the first colonies in the saliva samples between the two methods. However, the average number of colonies was significantly higher when using the biological method than when using the chemical method at six days and nine days postinoculation (Student’s test, p = 0.005 and p = 0.04, respectively). The chemical method made it possible to isolate four strains ofM. oralisand three strains ofM. smithiifrom the 50 saliva samples. Establishing the chemical method will ease the routine isolation and culture of methanogens.

Pollution from urban runoffs is one such threats, yet some mangroves are used as a bioremediation tool for wastewater (WW) treatment. This practice can impact mangrove crabs, which are key engineer species of the ecosystem. Using an experimental area with controlled WW releases, this study aimed to determine from an ecological and ecotoxicological perspective, the effects of WW on the red mangrove crab Neosarmatium africanum. Burrow density and salinity levels (used as a proxy of WW dispersion) were recorded, and a 3-week caging experiment was performed. Hemolymph osmolality, gill Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) activity and gill redox balance were assessed in anterior and posterior gills of N. africanum. Burrow density decreased according to salinity decreases around the discharged area. Crabs from the impacted area had a lower osmoregulatory capacity despite gill NKA activity remaining undisturbed. The decrease of the superoxide dismutase activity indicates changes in redox metabolism. However, both catalase activity and oxidative damage remained unchanged in both areas but were higher in posterior gills. These results indicate that WW release may induce osmoregulatory and redox imbalances, potentially explaining the decrease in crab density. Based on these results we conclude that WW release should be carefully monitored as crabs are key players involved in the bioremediation process.

International audience; Modern clinical caries management involves early stage caries diagnosis and should fit with dental health policy. The objective of this study was to achieve early caries detection in enamel and dentine with a laser-based system (DIAGNOdent™ pen) first and secondary with a new fluorescence intra-oral camera (Soprolife®). A visual inspection with a loupe was used as control.

The microbial communities of the oral fluid are in direct contact with tobacco smoke, which may thus affect these communities. Few culture-based studies have analyzed the effects of tobacco smoking on the oral fluid microbiota. Using bacterial culture we investigated whether tobacco smoking altered the microbial diversity of the oral fluid, focusing on aerobic and facultative anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria otherwise comprising of major pathogens. Among 90 oral fluid specimens collected in 19 tobacco-smokers and 71 controls, the diversity did not significantly differ with age and with sex. However, diversity was significantly lower in tobacco-smokers (nine different species) than in non-smokers (18 different species) with all the species cultured in tabocco-smokers being also cultured in non-smokers. We isolated the human pathogen Streptococcus australis for the first time from oral fluid. Tobacco smoking significantly alters the saliva Gram-positive bacterial microbiota, including pathogens with potential implication in the pathogenesis of tobacco-related diseases such as periodontitis and peri-implantitis.

International audience; Trichomonas tenax, an anaerobic protist difficult to cultivate with an unreliable molecular identification, has been suspected of involvement in periodontitis, a multifactorial inflamma-tory dental disease affecting the soft tissue and bone of periodontium. A cohort of 106 peri-odontitis patients classified by stages of severity and 85 healthy adult control patients was constituted. An efficient culture protocol, a new identification tool by real-time qPCR of T. tenax and a Multi-Locus Sequence Typing system (MLST) based on T. tenax NIH4 reference strain were created. Fifty-three strains of Trichomonas sp. were obtained from peri-odontal samples. 37/106 (34.90%) T. tenax from patients with periodontitis and 16/85 (18.80%˚) T. tenax from control patients were detected by culture (p = 0.018). Sixty of the 191 samples were tested positive for T. tenax by qPCR, 24/85 (28%) controls and 36/106 (34%) periodontitis patients (p = 0.089). By combining both results, 45/106 (42.5%) patients were positive by culture and/or PCR, as compared to 24/85 (28.2%) controls (p = 0.042). A link was established between the carriage in patients of Trichomonas tenax and the severity of the disease. International audience; Sialolithiasis are the most frequent salivary gland disease, mainly affecting the submandibular gland. With the advent of minimally invasive techniques, total salivary gland removal should not be considered as the first-line treatment anymore. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is an alternative to surgery preserving the gland. The objective of our retrospective study was to evaluate the efficiency of ESWL on pain and obstructive syndrome in patients suffering from sialolithiasis. The global result felt by the patients was also considered. All patients treated between October 2009 and July 2016 for sialolithiasis by ESWL in our department were included. They were divided into two groups according to the concerned gland: a parotid gland (PG) and a submandibular gland (SMG) group. Our retrospective telephone questionnaire consisted in 4 questions about their symptomatology before and after ESWL, including pain self-evaluation before and after treatment. They were finally asked to evaluate the global result of the ESWL treatment: excellent, good, mean, or poor. In total, 55 patients were included in this study, 38 patients in PG group and 17 patients in SMG group. We observed a decrease of pain and obstructive syndrom after ESWL procedure in both groups. Better results were found on the obstructive syndrome in the PG group. Very few side-effects were reported by patients. Given that it has very few side effects, ESWL can easily be considered as first line treatment for sialolithiasis to avoid heavier treatments such as surgery. It should be the first-line treatment for symptomatic parotid sialolithiases. The treatment of symptomatic submandibular sialolithiases depends on the topography of the lithiasis.Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

A split-mouth randomized clinical trial was carried out to assess the effectiveness of sealants in preventing carious ICDAS (International Caries Detection and Assessment System) 3–6 lesions within a 2-year follow-up. We evaluated the effectiveness of 2 types of resin-based sealants, with and without fluoride, their retention rates, and the caries risk factors related to their outcomes. The study included 663 tooth pairs in 400 children (aged 5–15 years) considered to be at high individual caries risk (ICR) and presenting permanent molars free of caries or affected by ICDAS 1–2 lesions. In the first randomization, molars were either randomized to the treatment group receiving a dental sealant or the control group (nontreatment), and in the second randomization the sealant material to be used in the intervention group was selected. Uni- and multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were employed. At the 2-year follow-up, 483 tooth pairs were assessed: sealed molars had 83% (adjusted HR = 0.17; 95% CI: 0.15–0.20) less risk of developing ICDAS 3–6 lesions than molars without sealant. The magnitude of the protective effect was lower among teeth with ICDAS 1–2 lesions or with occlusal deep fissures than without. If the total retention rate of sealants was 70% at 2 years, sealant loss was not associated with the risk of caries (HR = 1.29, 95% CI: 0.92–1.79, p = 0.14). Sealants allow the prevention of new ICDAS 3–6 lesions or progression of noncavitated carious lesions in children at high ICR, and the effect of the sealant was similar regardless of whether it contained fluoride or not.

Introduction : Les appareils orthodontiques favorisent la rétention de plaque dentaire et rendent le brossage moins aisé. Ils entraînent des modifications à la fois quantitatives et qualitatives de la plaque dentaire, exposant ainsi davantage les patients porteurs de tels dispositifs aux pathologies carieuses et parodontales. Matériels et méthodes : Les auteurs expliquent, dans cet article, l’influence des thérapeutiques orthodontiques sur la plaque dentaire, sur le risque carieux et sur le risque parodontal, font le point des bactéries incriminées et rappellent l’importance d’un contrôle de plaque individuel et professionnel rigoureux. Discussion : En conséquence, il est du devoir des orthodontistes d’éduquer leurs patients aux méthodes d’hygiène bucco-dentaire et parodontale afin de contrôler ce facteur bactérien et d’éviter l’apparition de complications dentaires et/ou parodontales.

International audience; Dentin carious lesion is a dynamic process that involves de- mineralization and collagen denaturation. Collagen type I is the major protein in dentin and it has been investigated based on its optical properties. Multiphoton microscopy (MPM) is a nonlinear imaging technique that reveals the car- ies process using the collagen two-photon excitation fluo- rescence (2PEF) and its second-harmonic generation (SHG). Combining the histological and the International Caries De- tection and Assessment System (ICDAS) classifications with nonlinear optical spectroscopy (NLOS), 2PEF and SHG inten- sities of enamel and dentin were highly altered during the caries process. It has been proven that the ratio SHG/2PEF is a relevant indicator of the organic matrix denaturation [Ter- rer et al.: J Dent Res 2016;96:574–579]. In the present study, a series of measurable signals is made to detect early stages of carious lesion according to the ICDAS classification and to explore the relationship between these measures and theICDAS scale. Comparison of the efficiency of nonlinear opti- cal signals for caries detection with the ICDAS classification is essential to evaluate their potential for clinical applica- tion. In our study, the use of the NLOS measured by MPM allowed us to monitor a quantitative parameter (SHG/2PEF ratio) according to the dentin carious lesion state (ICDAS and histological examination). Three coherent new groups were defined (ICDAS 0/1; ICDAS 2/3; ICDAS 4/5/6), where the carious process can be clearly described with a statistically significant decrease of the SHG/2PEF ratio.

Introduction :L’esthétique du sourire s’appuie sur des données numériques, physiques, physiologiques et psychologiques de la beauté, sans oublier les désirs du patient. Elle est déterminée par la forme, la couleur et la position des lèvres, des dents et des tissus gingivaux. L’examen du parodonte dans le cadre facial, puis dans le cadre labial permet d’analyser la visibilité de la gencive lors du sourire naturel et forcé, la santé parodontale, le contour gingival, la ligne esthétique gingivale, la présence des papilles.Matériels et méthodes :L’ensemble de ces données va permettre d’établir un score d’esthétique gingivale, de déterminer les origines de la disharmonie et les traitements envisagés.Discussion :Au moment du plan de traitement global orthodontique, la chirurgie plastique parodontale peut modifier l’aspect et la morphologie gingivale afin de rétablir une harmonie du sourire. La chirurgie plastique parodontale soustractive traite les défauts d’espace biologiques et les excès de tissus perçus lors des éruptions passives incomplètes par gingivectomie ou déplacement apical des tissus gingivaux associés ou non à une ostéoplastie ou une ostéoectomie. Enfin, des injections d’acide hyaluronique dans les papilles permettent de les repulper et de minimiser l’aspect des trous noirs.

International audience; OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine primarily the oral health status of patients with upper aerodigestive tract cancer before radiotherapy, and secondarily the prevalence of risk factors for poor oral status.METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Marseille University hospital. Assessment criteria were the Decay, Missing and Filled (DMF) Index and periodontal status.RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-four patients, mean age 60.9years, were included. The most common sites of primary tumors were the larynx (28.6%) and oral cavity (26.6%). Current or past smokers accounted for 80.5% of patients and 67% were alcohol abusers. Most patients (83.8%) did not have xerostomia. They ate three meals a day (61%), with sugar consumption in 40%. The median number of daily tooth brushings was 2, with a manual toothbrush (81.2%). Few patients used dental floss or interproximal brushes. Individual DMF index was 17.6 (D=2.3, M=9.3, F=6.0) and was higher in patients with xerostomia and alcohol abusers (P=0.01). Osseous level was 62.3% and 57.8% of patients had osseous infections, which were more common with poor hygiene (P=0.04). Most patients (85.7%) had periodontal disease, but incidence did not significantly differ according to risk factors.DISCUSSION: The DMF index was higher in presence of periodontal disease and osseous infections. Alcohol and xerostomia were associated with a high individual DMF index and osseous infections were more frequent in patients with poor hygiene. Patients with upper aerodigestive tract cancer are at high risk of osteoradionecrosis if they do not receive dental treatment before radiotherapy.Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Masson SAS. International audience; The oral fluid microbiome comprises an important bacterial diversity, yet the presence of archaea has not been reported so far. In order to quest for the presence of methanogenic archaea (methanogens) in oral fluid, we used a polyphasic approach including PCR-sequencing detection, microscopic observation by fluorescence in-situ hybridization, isolation and culture, molecular identification and genotyping of methanogens in 200 oral fluid specimens. In the presence of negative controls, 64/200 (32%) prospectively analysed oral fluid specimens were PCR-positive for methanogens, all identified as Methanobrevibacter oralis by sequencing. Further, fluorescence in-situ hybridization detected methanogens in 19/48 (39.6%) investigated specimens; with morphology suggesting M. oralis in 10 cases and co-infecting Methanobrevibacter smithii in nine cases. M. oralis was cultured from 46/64 (71.8%) PCR-positive specimens and none of PCR-negative specimens; and one M. smithii isolate was co-cultured with M. oralis in one specimen. Multispacer Sequence Typing found one M. oralis genotype per specimen and a total of five different genotypes with 19/46 (41%) of isolates all belonging to spacer-type four. Statistical analyses showed a significant correlation between the PCR-detection of methanogens in oral fluid and tobacco smoking. These data indicate that M. oralis and M. smithii are oral fluid-borne methanogens in tobacco smokers. Both methanogens could be transmitted during intimate contacts such as mother-to-child contacts and kissing.

Methanogens have already been described in periodontitis but not in peri-implantitis. Thirty peri-implantitis samples and 28 control samples were collected in 28 consenting peri-implantitis patients. PCR-sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used as a broad-spectrum screening method and results were further confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR targeting the mcrA genes. Results showed a methanogen community dominated by Methanobrevibacter oralis in 31/58 (51%) samples including 16/28 (57%) control samples and 15/30 (50%) peri-implantitis samples. Methanobrevibacter massiliense was detected in 5/58 (8.6%) samples including 3/28 (1%) control samples and 2/30 (6.7%) peri-implantitis samples. The prevalence of M. oralis or M. massiliense did not significantly differ in peri-implantitis and control samples (exact Fisher test, P = 0.61 and P = 0.67, respectively). Further ponderation of the methanogen load by the real-time quantitative PCR for actin human gene again indicated non-significant difference (Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test, P = 0.48 and P = 0.40, respectively). These data show that the prevalence of methanogens does not differ in peri-implantitis lesions and healthy sites, when individuals are their own control. These data do not allow assigning a specific pathogenic role to methanogens in peri-implantitis; methanogens rather are part of the commensal and normal flora of the oral cavity.

Introduction Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma (CCOC) is described as an exceptional and hard to diagnose malignant tumor which was first reported by Hansen in 1985. The purpose of this review article is to show that CCOC is a not that rare entity and to discuss its various aspects in order to enhance the diagnosis. Material and methods A search in the English language literature was performed using the Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed and Medline databases between 1985 and 2016. Data were collected on epidemiologic, clinical, radiographic, histological, immunohistochemistrical, cytogenetic, management, follow-up and prognosis features of CCOC. Results Sixty-five studies from which a total of 95 case reports were included in the review. CCOC was generally seen in the fifth decade and the most common site was mandibular. The most frequently found symptoms were swelling, tooth mobility and pain. Radiologically, the image was radiolucent and could look like a cyst or a periodontal lesion. In situ hybridization techniques frequently expressed a gene fission of EWSR1. The treatment was mostly a radical surgical excision of the tumor with or without adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy. CCOC showed high rates of recurrence and mortality related with the presence of distance metastasis. Discussion Fission of EWSR1 gene could be the main element it the diagnosis of CCOC. A multidisciplinary approach, including a radiologist, pathologist and an oral & maxillofacial surgeon may be helpful in the evaluation and management of these lesions. With 95 reports found in English literature, we cannot say that CCOC is extremely rare anymore.

International audience; Mediastinal gray zone lymphoma, B-cell lymphomas with intermediate features between classical Hodgkin lymphoma and primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma, have not been well described in the literature. We report the clinical characteristics and outcomes of a large retrospective series of 99 cases centrally reviewed by a panel of hematopathologists, with a consensus established for the diagnosis. Cases were defined as classical Hodgkin lymphoma-like morphology (64.6%) with primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma immunophenotype, primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma-like morphology (30.3%) with classical Hodgkin lymphoma or composite (5.1%) (synchronous occurrence of classical Hodgkin lymphoma and primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma). The median age was 32 years (13-83 years); 55% were women. Thirteen of 81 evaluable cases (16%) were Epstein-Barr virus-positive. Twenty-eight percent of patients presented primary refractory disease (progression under first-line treatment or relapse within one year). The 3-year event-free and overall survival rates were 63% and 80%, respectively. Patients treated with a standard regimen (RCHOP/ABVD) had worse event-free survival (P=0.003) and overall survival (P=0.02) than those treated with a dose-intensive chemotherapy (high-dose RCHOP/escalated BEACOPP). Rituximab added to chemotherapy was not associated with better event-free survival (P=0.55) or overall survival (P=0.88). Radiotherapy for patients in complete remission had no impact on event-free survival. In multivariate prognostic analysis, ECOG-PS and anemia were the strongest factors associated with a shorter event-free survival and overall survival, respectively. In conclusion, this report describes the largest series of mediastinal gray zone lymphoma. Our data suggest that a dose-intensive treatment might improve the outcome of this rare and aggressive disease.

The fact of living at home or in an institution can influence the use of care and alter the patients’ perception of their oral health status.Methods: The data analyzed were taken from a survey on disability and health carried out in 2008–2009, which is representative of the population living in France. It consists of two sections, one centered on disability and health among home-dwellers and the other on patients living in an institution. In each of these two populations, we carried out descriptive analysis of three themes: use of care, forgoing of care, and oral health.Results: Although visits to physicians and specialists were frequent, visits to dentists were lower in both populations. While a minority of patients forwent care, it was dental care that was mainly forgone by both home-dwellers and institutionalized patients. The cost factor remained the principal reason, but other factors such as fear or accessibility problems were cited. Use of a dental appliance was considerably more frequent among institutionalized patients than among home-dwellers, with just over half the institutionalized population wearing a dental appliance. Perceived state of oral health remained difficult to interpret.Conclusion: To improve access to oral care for the elderly, the patients, their entourage and health providers need increased awareness and information on the importance of good oral health. Objective The objective of this study was to utilise a new methodological approach based on radiographic examinations to demonstrate a potential association between coronary heart diseases (CHD) as well as severe hypertension and alveolar bone loss (ABL) in older adults. Background Many studies, primarily assessing clinical parameters, underline the association between periodontal diseases and cardiovascular diseases. The relationship between ABL and CHD/vascular diseases (VD) is potentially of high importance because of their prevalence in populations, and they represent an important issue in the fields of epidemiology and public health. Therefore, this topic was approached with new tools. Materials and methods The study was comprised of 236 participants over 50 years. A clinical examination and a radiographic assessment of ABL were performed. Direct measures of alveolar bone level were recorded using CT scans, and different variables were studied (age, sex, Plaque index, cigarettes per day, coronary heart disease and vascular disease status). Aim To assess the influence of concentration, temperature and surfactant addition to a sodium hypochlorite solution on its dynamic viscosity and to calculate the corresponding Reynolds number to determine the corresponding flow regimen. Methodology The dynamic viscosity of the irrigant was assessed using a rotational viscometer. Sodium hypochlorite with concentrations ranging from 0.6% to 9.6% was tested at 37 and 22 °C. A wide range of concentrations of three different surfactants was mixed in 2.4% sodium hypochlorite for viscosity measurements. The Reynolds number was calculated under each condition. The goal of this study was to assess the reproducibility of an innovative method for facial analysis with three-dimensional-stereophotogrammetry (3D-spg).Twelve subjects with no obvious malocclusion participated in this study. For each of them, four photographs were acquired using the LifeViz(TM) , an absolute calibration 3D-spg system. The facial reconstructions were analyzed with the DermaPix(TM) image management software. Two different operators recorded distances between landmarks and each operator repeated the measurements after one week. The intra- and inter-examiner reproducibilities were assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC).This study showed reproducible intra and inter-examiners results for facial measurements (ICC comprised between 0.732 and 0.976) except for measurements that involve the inner part of the dental corridor (ICC comprised between 0.598 and 0.914).The measurements recorded by 3D-LifeViz(TM) system are accurate and reliable for research and clinical use. Moreover, it is simple and inexpensive compared with other 3D methods (laser scanner, 3D Computed Tomography, and 3D Cone Beam CT).The inter- and intra-operator reliability of the LifeViz(TM) 3D-spg method was demonstrated. The LifeViz(TM) 3D-spg method might be a useful method to accomplish indirect 3D measurements that are relevant to dental and facial diagnosis. (J Esthet Restor Dent, 2016).

International audience; Multiphoton confocal microscopy and nonlinear spectroscopy are used to investigate the caries process in dentin. Although dentin is a major calcified tissue of the teeth, its organic phase comprises type I collagen fibers. Caries drive dentin demineralization and collagen denaturation. Multiphoton microscopy is a powerful imaging technique: the biological materials are transparent to infrared frequencies and can be excited to penetration depths inaccessible to 1-photon confocal microscopy. The laser excitation greatly reduces photodamage to the sole focal region, and the signal-to-noise ratio is improved significantly. The method has been used to follow pathologic processes involving collagen fibrosis or collagen destruction based on their 2-photon excited fluorescence (2PEF) emission and second harmonic generation (SHG). Combining multiphoton imaging with nonlinear spectroscopy, we demonstrate that both 2PEF and SHG intensity of human dentin are strongly modified during the tooth caries process, and we show that the ratio between SHG and 2PEF signals is a reliable parameter to follow dental caries. The ratio of the SHG/2PEF signals measured by nonlinear optical spectroscopy provides valuable information on the caries process, specifically on the degradation of the organic matrix of dentin. The goal is to bring these nonlinear optical signals to clinical application for caries diagnosis.

International audience; Gender determination is a fundamental issue in forensic anthropology. Many techniques based on bone and dental remains have been proposed. It is not always possible to implement the techniques using bones, but teeth are often perfectly preserved. It has been demonstrated that the canine has the greatest sexual dimorphism, and the aim of this work was to provide an easy and accurate dental technique for determining the gender in the absence of other skeletal elements. The sample was composed of 210 CT scans with four healthy canines. The 840 canines were modeled using MIMICS® 10.01 software. The total volume of each tooth was determined. Seven mathematical models were determined by binary logistic regressions and ranked in order of relative performance. The seven proposed predictive models thus performed (0.910≤AUC≤0.938), with overall rates of correct predictions between 82.38 and 85.24%. The 4-canine model is the most powerful for predicting the gender.

International audience; Introduction: Sinus aspergillosis is a potential complication after root canal therapy of antral teeth. Indeed, zinc oxide eugenol cement overfilling in the sinus may promote fungal infection. Moreover, if sinus aspergillosis triggers chronic sinusitis with aspergilloma, it may also lead to invasive phenomena, especially for immunocompromised patients. Methods: We reported a sinus aspergillosis case of a patient treated with infliximab (Remicade; Janssen Biologics BV, Leiden, Netherlands). The purpose of this article was to explore the mechanisms of this pathosis, especially the impact of the root canal sealer overextension, which is a contributing factor for fungal infection. The surgical management and the follow-up are also described. Results: Six months after surgery, the patient showed no clinical signs and presented with a healthy and airy right maxillary sinus on the computed tomography scan. Conclusions: In conclusion, prevention and screening of aspergillosis of maxillary sinus may be considered before starting an anti tumor necrosis factor alpha therapy

This article presents the analysis of dental remains and waste from the dental office of a German rest camp of the First World War in order to study the living conditions of the soldiers, the care policy and the prosthetic rehabilitation techniques used in this context.The study included both dental and prosthetic remains, revealed during the excavation. The criteria to determine dental and periodontal health were the presence or absence of caries, wear, tartar and periodontal lesion. Location, severity and frequency of each of these parameters were examined. Regarding the prosthetic remains, the type of prosthesis and the materials used were determined.Three hundred and twenty seven (327) dental remains were analyzed. A high prevalence of large caries, especially in the molar areas, was highlighted. The incisal areas had however more wear and tartar. 183 casts of plaster dental arcade allowed to highlight a significant proportion of posterior edentulous. Prosthetic remains and laboratory waste revealed the use of vulcanite and porcelain for making dentures.

International audience; The atypical cadherins Fat (Ft) and Dachsous (Ds) control tissue growth through the Salvador–Warts–Hippo (SWH) pathway, and also regulate planar cell polarity and morphogenesis. Ft and Ds engage in reciprocal signalling as both proteins can serve as receptor and ligand for each other. The intracellular domains (ICDs) of Ft and Ds regulate the activity of the key SWH pathway transcriptional co-activator protein Yorkie (Yki). Signalling from the FtICD is well characterized and controls tissue growth by regulating the abundance of the Yki-repressive kinase Warts (Wts). Here we identify two regulators of the Drosophila melanogaster SWH pathway that function downstream of the DsICD: the WD40 repeat protein Riquiqui (Riq) and the DYRK-family kinase Minibrain (Mnb). Ds physically interacts with Riq, which binds to both Mnb and Wts. Riq and Mnb promote Yki-dependent tissue growth by stimulating phosphorylation-dependent inhibition of Wts. Thus, we describe a previously unknown branch of the SWH pathway that controls tissue growth downstream of Ds.

International audience; The hematocrit-to-viscosity ratio (HVR) has been widely used has an estimate of red blood cell (RBC) oxygen transport effectiveness into the microvasculature or as an oxygen delivery index. However, no study investigated the possibility of HVR to truly reflect RBC oxygen transport effectiveness or to be an oxygen delivery index. We measured blood viscosity at high shear rate (225 s-1), hematocrit, HVR, as well as the microvascular oxyhemoglobin saturation (TOI; tissue oxygen index) by spatial resolved near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) at cerebral and muscle levels in three population known to have various degrees of hemorheological abnormalities: healthy subjects (AA), patients with sickle cell SC disease (SC) characterized by moderate anemia and patients with sickle cell anemia (SS) marked by severe anemia. At both the cerebral and muscle level, HVR was positively correlated with TOI (r = 0.28; p = 0.03 and r = 0.38; p = 0.003, at the cerebral and muscle level, respectively). These findings suggest that HVR probably play a key role in blood flow and hemodynamic regulation in the microvasculature, hence modulating the amount of oxygen available for tissues. Nevertheless, the strengths of the associations are weak (R2 < 0.50), suggesting that other determinants modulate microvascular blood flow and oxygenation, such as vascular geometry and vasomotor reserve.

International audience; The study of intra-individual variability of acellular cementum apposition is a major issue in the estimation of age-at-death using cementochronology. Since the literature is scarce on the subject we extracted 51 modern teeth from 15 of known-age patients. We manually counted the acellular cementum increments on five cross sections from the middle third root of each tooth. Age estimation was then calculated by summing the number of lines to the average age of dental eruption. Our results showed some variability between counts within tooth, especially on premolars. The intra-individual variability of cementum deposition has been highlighted by comparing age estimates obtained for each tooth of one individual which is not surprising considering problems already described in the literature on this issue. Once premolars were excluded, the variation between teeth of an individual dropped to 0 to 5 years in 73% of cases. In conclusion, the intra-individual and intra-dental variability of cementum have to continue to be studied and quantified to obtain the most accurate and reliable estimation of age-at-death and potentially predict which region of interest should be considered prior to sectioning and counting.

Our aim was to determine the origin of the red fluorescence of carious dentine observed with the Soprolife® camera. We conducted in vitro studies to evaluate the origin of the red fluorescence using acids and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) to mimic caries and methylglycoxal (MGO) to evaluate the effect of glycation reactions on the red fluorescence. In every step of these models, we detected the changes of dentin photonic response with Soprolife® in daylight mode and in treatment mode. A Raman spectroscopy analysis was performed to determine the variations of the dentin organic during the in vitro caries processes. Raman microscopy was performed to identify change in the collagen matrix of dentine. The red fluorescence observed in carious dentine using a Soprolife® camera corresponds to the brownish color observed using daylight. Demineralization using nitric acid induces a loss of the green fluorescence of dentine. The red fluorescence of carious dentine is resistant to acid treatment. Immersion of demineralized dentine in MGO induces a change of color from white to orange-red. This indicates that the Maillard reaction contributes to lesion coloration. Immersion of demineralized dentine in an MMP-1 solution followed by MGO treatment results in a similar red fluorescence. Raman microspectroscopy analysis reveals accumulation of AGE's product in red-colored dentine. Our results provide important information on the origin of the fluorescence variation of dentine observed with the Soprolife® camera. We demonstrate that the red fluorescence of carious dentine is linked to the accumulation of Advanced Glycation End products (AGE). The study provides a new biological basis for the red fluorescence of carious dentine and reinforces the importance of the Soprolife® camera in caries diagnostics.

Ce travail se propose d'évaluer les liens entre ménopause et état de santé bucco-dentaire par une étude transversale menée sur 202 femmes ménopausées avec ou sans hormonothérapie substitutive (THS) et non-ménopausées, d'origine socio-économique et socio-culturelle diverses et âgées de 42 à 80 ans.Les 202 patientes ont fait l'objet d'un interrogatoire et d'un examen clinique approfondi. Les relations entre période de la ménopause et mortalité dentaire ont été déterminées par analyses bi variées et multi variées. On note alors que le nombre de dents absentes est plus faible chez les femmes issues de milieux socio–économiques favorisés, (p = 0,033). En outre, le nombre de dents absentes est fortement corrélé à la sècheresse buccale (p = 0,000). Par ailleurs, les femmes ménopausées sous hormonothérapie substitutive ont moins de dents absentes que les femmes ménopausées sans hormonothérapie substitutive, (p = 0,015). De plus, le nombre de dents absentes est significativement augmenté chez les femmes cardiaques non-diabétiques, (OR = 1,215).Ce résultat est sensiblement identique chez les femmes cardiaques, non-diabétiques ménopausées sans THS, (OR = 1,214). Enfin, on note un lien entre évènements stressants et mortalité dentaire (p = 0,042).Summary

International audience; The aim of this study was to establish a prediction formula to allow for the determination of sex among the southeastern French population using dental measurements. The sample consisted of 105 individuals (57 males and 48 females, aged between 18 and 25 years). Dental measurements were calculated using Euclidean distances, in three-dimensional space, from point coordinates obtained by a Microscribe. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to establish the prediction formula. Among 12 selected dental distances, a stepwise logistic regression analysis highlighted the two most significant discriminate predictors of sex: one located at the mandible and the other at the maxilla. A cutpoint was proposed to prediction of true sex. The prediction formula was then tested on a validation sample (20 males and 34 females, aged between 18 and 62 years and with a history of orthodontics or restorative care) to evaluate the accuracy of the method.

International audience; The few available studies on fetal age estimation concern very small samples, and statistical analysis is sometimes inadequate. In this survey, we used germs of deciduous teeth to estimate fetal age. Forty-nine fetuses and 40 mandibles were scanned, and observations and measurements were made on DentaScan images. After checking their repeatability and reproducibility (analysis of variance), we defined thresholds using Fisher's linear discriminant analysis to calculate the probability that a fetus was over or below a predefined age threshold. The forensic threshold which is of particular interest in France is 22 weeks amenorrhea. Relationships between fetal age and deciduous germ measurements were then sought by multiple linear regression. The thresholds gave very good results: 91.84% of good probability for the threshold of 22 weeks amenorrhea with no chance of error. The most precise age evaluation obtained nevertheless gave a range of €4.6 weeks amenorrhea, so greater accuracy is still needed.

This article describes an osteolytic odontogenetic lesion found on the mandible of a Neanderthal from the Middle Paleolithic site of Riparo Mezzena near the city of Verona (Italy). A pathology was revealed through X-ray and computerized-tomodensitometric examinations. This lesion was compared to present and sub-contemporary populations and indicates that it may have been of infectious origin, resulting from a bacterial invasion of the root canal of a coronal pulp exposure. The bacterial contamination may have resulted either from a traumatic fracture, a cavity, or extensive wear on the tooth.; Cet article présente une lésion ostéolitique odontogène observée sur la mandibule d'un fossile Néandertalien provenant du site Paléolithique moyen de Riparo Mezzena, près de la ville de Vérone en Italie. Cette pathologie a été mise en évidence par des examens radiologiques et tomodensitométriques. Par comparaison avec une lésion d'aspect similaire chez un patient actuel, l'étiologie de cette pathologie semble être d'ordre infectieux. Elle serait, sans doute, due à une invasion bactérienne de la cavité pulpaire à partir de la surface occlusale, par suite de la cassure accidentelle de la dent, ou d'une carie, ou encore d'une très forte abrasion.
