Consequently, researchers in this modern scientific era have shown keen interest in the selective detection of these toxic gases. The development of fast, economical, selective, and highly sensitive gas sensors has become a crucial pursuit to accurately detect toxic gases and mitigate their adverse effects on the natural environment. Graphene-based nanocomposites have emerged as promising candidates for selectively detecting toxic gases due to their extensive surface area. This review paper provides a comprehensive summary of recent advancements in graphene-based gas sensors. The paper also offers an overview of various synthetic strategies for graphene and its hybrid architectures. Additionally, it delves into the detailed sensing applications of these materials. Herein, NiO nanoparticles (NPs) functionalized with a para-hexanitrocalix[6]arene derivative (p-HNC6/NiO) were synthesized by using a facile method and applied as a selective electrochemical sensor for the determination of bisphenol S (BPS) in real samples. Moreover, the functional interactions, phase purities, surface morphologies and elemental compositions of the synthesized p-HNC6/NiO NPs were investigated via advanced analytical tools, such as Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Additionally, the synthesized p-HNC6/NiO NPs were cast on the surface of a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) via a drop casting method, which resulted in uniform deposition of p-HNC6/NiO/GCE over the surface of the GCE. Additionally, the developed p-HNC6/NiO/GCE sensor demonstrated an outstanding electrochemical response to BPS under optimized conditions, including a supporting electrolyte, a Briton–Robinson buffer electrolyte at pH 4, a scan rate of 110 mV s−1 and a potential window of between −0.2 and 1.0 V. The wide linear dynamic range was optimized to 0.8–70 μM to obtain a brilliant linear calibration curve for BPS. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of the developed sensor were estimated to be 0.0059 and 0.019 μM, respectively, which are lower than those of reported sensors for BPS. A confined plunging liquid jet reactor (CPLJR) is an unconventional efficient and feasible aerator, mixer and brine dispenser that operates under many operating conditions. Such operating conditions could be challenging, and hence, utilizing prediction models built on machine learning (ML) approaches could be very helpful in giving reliable tools to manage highly non-linear problems related to experimental hydrodynamics such as CPLJRs. CPLJRs are vital in protecting the environment through preserving and sustaining the quality of water resources. In the current study, the effects of the main parameters on the air entrainment rate, Qa, were investigated experimentally in a confined plunging liquid jet reactor (CPLJR). Various downcomer diameters (Dc), jet lengths (Lj), liquid volumetric flow rates (Qj), nozzle diameters (dn), and jet velocities (Vj) were used to measure the air entrainment rate, Qa. The non-linear relationship between the air entrainment ratio and confined plunging jet reactor parameters suggests that applying unconventional regression algorithms to predict the air entrainment ratio is appropriate. In addition to the experimental work, machine learning (ML) algorithms were applied to the confined plunging jet reactor parameters to determine the parameter that predicts Qa the best. The results obtained from ML showed that K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) gave the best prediction abilities, the proportion of variance in the Qa that can be explained by the CPLJR parameter was 90%, the root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.069, and the mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.052. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the most effective predictor in predicting Qa. The Qj and Vj were the most influential among all the input variables. The sensitivity analysis shows that the lasso algorithm can create an effective air entrainment rate model with just two of the most crucial variables, Qj and Vj. Plunging liquid jet reactor (PLJR) has gained popularity as a feasible and efficient aerator and mixer. However, the measurement of air disentrainment rate (Qads), which affects aeration performance, has been overlooked by many researchers. In this work, a newly invented Al-Anzi disentrainment ring (ADR) device was incorporated in CPLJR to experimentally measure Qads and its effect on the net air entrainment rate. Furthermore, the effect of new variables (lADR and ds) and old variables (Lj and VL) on Qanet were also investigated. Results showed that shorter ds and lADR produced higher Qanet for the same ADR device. A new net entrainment jet velocity at the impingement point (VLnet) was measured at about 651 cm/s, above which bubbles left the base of downcomer as Qanet. Qanet increased linearly with VL; however, Qads increased until it reached maximum value, and then decreased. Bubble penetration depth and liquid rise height increased for all VL until they reached maximum, and then leveled off for the same lADR. A significant increase in Qanet values was achieved with this downcomer in comparison with the conventional one. Motivation Existing computational models can predict single- and double-mutant fitness but they do have limitations. First, they are often tested via evaluation metrics that are inappropriate for imbalanced datasets. Second, all of them only predict a binary outcome (viable or not, and negatively interacting or not). Third, most are uninterpretable black box machine learning models. Results Budding yeast datasets were used to develop high-performance Multinomial Regression (MN) models capable of predicting the impact of single, double and triple genetic disruptions on viability. These models are interpretable and give realistic non-binary predictions and can predict negative genetic interactions (GIs) in triple-gene knockouts. They are based on a limited set of gene features and their predictions are influenced by the probability of target gene participating in molecular complexes or pathways. Furthermore, the MN models have utility in other organisms such as fission yeast, fruit flies and humans, with the single gene fitness MN model being able to distinguish essential genes necessary for cell-autonomous viability from those required for multicellular survival. Finally, our models exceed the performance of previous models, without sacrificing interpretability. Because of the direct link between sea temperature and aquatic biodiversity, there is a need to analyze the temporal changes in sea surface temperature in various water bodies, especially the semi-enclosed ones. There has been substantial research undertaken on time series analysis as a powerful technique for studying the characteristics of long-term SST changes at regular time intervals. The present paper aimed to examine the monthly-averaged MODIS SST data (2001– 2019) over Kuwait Bay, i.e., the northwestern corner of the Arabian Gulf. Because different approaches can yield different results, the analysis of the SST time series was conducted using time and frequency domains. The preliminary analysis of the time series reported a significant SST peak in August 2010 that reached nearly 34.2 °C (SD = 0.17 °C) due to the moderate-intensity El Niño event in 2010. However, in the preceding year, we observed a cool SST anomaly in the range of –0.5 °C to –2.4 °C. The SMK trend test found that monthly climatological SST in September exhibited a significant upward trend (S9 = 103, r = 0.6, P = 0.0004). Pettitt’s change-point test indicated a significant change in the central tendency of SST data after April 2012. The annual periodicity of the SST in Kuwait Bay was constant over the 19 years. Furthermore, a very weak periodicity of 6-month has been barely noticed. Our present results provide large-scale guidance that affirms the importance of highlighting the severe SST fluctuations in Kuwait’s water to understand and improve its marine environmental status. Tile industry wastewater is known to contain a high concentration of TSS and turbidity resulting from various raw materials. In the present study, the effectiveness of the coagulation process on turbidity and TSS removal from Kuwait ceramic tile industry wastewater was investigated using ferric chloride as a coagulant. The experiments were conducted using jar tests to determine the optimum operating conditions of coagulant dosages, pH, and settling time. It was found that the coagulant dosage and medium pH greatly affect the efficiency of the coagulation process. A gradual increase in coagulant dosage from 10 to 50 mg/L increased the efficiency of turbidity removal from 95.6% to 99.5%. The efficiency of the coagulation process was also found to be dependent on pH values, where higher pH improved the efficiency of turbidity removal. It was found that a medium pH of 10, 1 h settling time, and 50 mg/L of coagulant dosage are the optimum process conditions to achieve almost complete removal of turbidity (99.5%) and TSS (99.8%). Chandler Abstract: Although the jelly layers surrounding amphibian eggs are known to be essential to fertilization, no biological activities have been reported for jelly macromolecules in any vertebrate. Here we provide evidence that the jelly surrounding Xenopus laevis eggs releases a small diffusible protein into the surrounding media that serve as sperm chemoattractant. Using video microscopy we find that Xenopus sperm will preferentially turn toward and contact a glass capillary filled with egg jelly extract. In experiments using a two-chamber bioassay device we find that egg jelly extracts are capable of stimulating sperm extract. In experiments using a two-chamber bioassay device we find that egg jelly extracts are capable of stimulating sperm movement across a membrane barrier sixfold over controls. This activity is not observed in materials unrelated to egg jelly and the response of sperm to egg jelly extract is clearly chemotactic rather than chemokinetic. A concentration gradient of the extract is absolutely necessary, and the chemotactic activity of the extract exhibits a biphasic dose dependence similar to that of chemotactic agents in other systems. We have been able to characterize the factor as being a heat-stable protein about 10 kDa in size. This study, therefore, provides the first clear evidence for a diffusible sperm chemoattractant in a nonhuman vertebrate, as well as the first demonstration of a physiological role for egg jelly macromolecules in Xenopus fertilization. The Kingdom of Bahrain announced its first case of COVID-19 infection on February 24, 2020. Since that time, the government has imposed several restrictions such as closures, banning gatherings, and closing border crossings to limit the spread of the pandemic and relieve pressure on the healthcare system. This article provides an overview of the current trajectory of the pandemic in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In addition, the article introduces and applies a methodology to analyze the impact of the interventions and precautionary measures enforced by the government to limit the COVID-19 disease propagation. The results show that most of the enforced precautionary measures were effective in reducing the spread of the disease by a percentage ranging from 20.2% to 41.8%. A religious occasion in Bahrain—involving large gatherings—had increased the spread of the disease by 28.7%. Abstract Background Neuronal growth cones follow specific pathways over long distances in order to reach their appropriate targets. Research over the past 15 years has yielded a large body of information concerning the molecules that regulate this process. Some of these molecules, such as the evolutionarily conserved netrin and slit proteins, are expressed in the embryonic midline, an area of extreme importance for early axon pathfinding decisions. A general model has emerged in which netrin attracts commissural axons towards the midline while slit forces them out. However, a large number of commissural axons successfully cross the midline even in the complete absence of netrin signaling, indicating the presence of a yet unidentified midline attractant. Results The evolutionarily conserved Ig proteins encoded by the turtle/Dasm1 genes are found in Drosophila, Caenorhabditis elegans, and mammals. In Drosophila the turtle gene encodes five proteins, two of which are diffusible, that are expressed in many areas, including the vicinity of the midline. Using both molecular null alleles and transgenic expression of the different isoforms, we show that the turtle encoded proteins function as non-cell autonomous axonal attractants that promote midline crossing via a netrin-independent mechanism. turtle mutants also have either stalled or missing axon projections, while overexpression of the different turtle isoforms produces invasive neurons and branching axons that do not respect the histological divisions of the nervous system. Conclusion Our findings indicate that the turtle proteins function as axon guidance cues that promote midline attraction, axon branching, and axonal invasiveness. The latter two capabilities are required by migrating axons to explore densely packed targets.

Ion selective membrane (ISM) is widely used in electrochemical engineering and micro-fluidic processes, yet accurate modeling of the ISM is still challenging due to many scientific issues. So far, assumptions on the "ideal ISM" have been used in most simulation studies involving ion transport and electrokinetic flow in ion concentration polarization systems, but the validity or accuracy of those assumptions has never been investigated. In this paper, using a two-dimensional nanochannel system with practical significance, we verify the validity of the ideal ISM model by making comparisons between the idealized ISM system and a more realistic permselective nanochannel system in terms of simplifications over the electrical potential, counter-ion concentration, and zero co-ion flux. Our results show that the simplifications of fixed voltage and fixed counter-ion concentration in the ideal ISM model are largely accurate in most situations, especially under high applied voltage and/or with high charge density inside the ISM. However, zero co-ion flux simplification is not exactly accurate in most occasions. Significant errors may be incurred by the zero co-ion flux assumption when steady state solutions are sought using the ISM model. Some discussions over the influences of structures of the nanochannel system are also added. The obtained results will help in obtaining detailed understanding of the transport features inside the nanoporous ISM, especially when the comparison between simulation and experimental data is necessary. Performance indicators and ranking methods are effective tools for assessing the environmental impact of emerging technologies and comparing the operational efficiencies of different processes. Desalination of seawater, which is vital for solving the water shortage in the Arabian Gulf region, should be assessed due to its adverse environmental impacts on the shallow and closed Gulf basin. The main objective of the current work is to develop and implement an environmental assessment methodology capable of ranking alternative desalination processes and technologies based on their environmental performance. The proposed methodology starts with identification of relevant indicators and uses the relative ranking of desalination plants together with an aggregated environmental index. The assessment approach was tested on selected desalination plants in the Arabian Gulf region. The results showed that the ranking methods are effective in aggregating the influence of individual indicators to produce a numerical value that indicates the rank of studied desalination plants with respect to their environmental impact. An approach combining genetic, proteomic, computational, and physiological analysis was used to define a protein network that regulates fat storage in budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). A computational analysis of this network shows that it is not scale-free, and is best approximated by the Watts-Strogatz model, which generates “small-world” networks with high clustering and short path lengths. The network is also modular, containing energy level sensing proteins that connect to four output processes: autophagy, fatty acid synthesis, mRNA processing, and MAP kinase signaling. The importance of each protein to network function is dependent on its Katz centrality score, which is related both to the protein’s position within a module and to the module’s relationship to the network as a whole. The network is also divisible into subnetworks that span modular boundaries and regulate different aspects of fat metabolism. We used a combination of genetics and pharmacology to simultaneously block output from multiple network nodes. The phenotypic results of this blockage define patterns of communication among distant network nodes, and these patterns are consistent with the Watts-Strogatz model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drosophila melanogaster has recently emerged as a useful model system in which to study the genetic basis of regulation of fat storage. One of the most frequently used methods for evaluating the levels of stored fat (triglycerides) in flies is a coupled colorimetric assay available as a kit from several manufacturers. This is an aqueous-based enzymatic assay that is normally used for measurement of mammalian serum triglycerides, which are present in soluble lipoprotein complexes. In this short communication, we show that coupled colorimetric assay kits cannot accurately measure stored triglycerides in Drosophila. First, they fail to give accurate readings when tested on insoluble triglyceride mixtures with compositions like that of stored fat, or on fat extracted from flies with organic solvents. This is probably due to an inability of the lipase used in the kits to efficiently cleave off the glycerol head group from fat molecules in insoluble samples. Second, the measured final products of the kits are quinoneimines, which absorb visible light in the same wavelength range as Drosophila eye pigments. Thus, when extracts from crushed flies are assayed, much of the measured signal is actually due to eye pigments. Finally, the lipoprotein lipases used in colorimetric assays also cleave non-fat glycerides. The glycerol backbones liberated from all classes of glycerides are measured through the remaining reactions in the assay. As a consequence, when these assay kits are used to evaluate tissue extracts, the observed signal actually represents the amount of free glycerols together with all types of glycerides. For these reasons, findings obtained through use of coupled colorimetric assays on Drosophila samples must be interpreted with caution. Summary: Background: Total food intake is a function of meal size and meal frequency, and adjustments to these parameters allow animals to maintain a stable energy balance in changing environmental conditions. The physiological mechanisms that regulate meal size have been studied in blowflies but have not been previously examined in Drosophila. Results: Here we show that mutations in the leucokinin neuropeptide (leuc) and leucokinin receptor (lkr) genes cause phenotypes in which Drosophila adults have an increase in meal size and a compensatory reduction in meal frequency. Because mutant flies take larger but fewer meals, their caloric intake is the same as that of wild-type flies. The expression patterns of the leuc and lkr genes identify small groups of brain neurons that regulate this behavior. Leuc-containing presynaptic terminals are found close to Lkr neurons in the brain and ventral ganglia, suggesting that they deliver Leuc peptide to these neurons. Lkr neurons innervate the foregut. Flies in which Leuc or Lkr neurons are ablated have defects identical to those of leucokinin pathway mutants. Conclusions: Our data suggest that the increase in meal size in leuc and lkr mutants is due to a meal termination defect, perhaps arising from impaired communication of gut distension signals to the brain. Leucokinin and the leucokinin receptor are homologous to vertebrate tachykinin and its receptor, and injection of tachykinins reduces food consumption. Summary: In mammals, fat store levels are communicated by leptin and insulin signaling to brain centers that regulate food intake and metabolism. By using transgenic manipulation of neural activity, we report the isolation of two distinct neuronal populations in flies that perform a similar function, the c673a-Gal4 and fruitless-Gal4 neurons. When either of these neuronal groups is silenced, fat store levels increase. This change is mediated through an increase in food intake and altered metabolism in c673a-Gal4-silenced flies, while silencing fruitless-Gal4 neurons alters only metabolism. Hyperactivation of either neuronal group causes depletion of fat stores by increasing metabolic rate and decreasing fatty acid synthesis. Altering the activities of these neurons causes changes in expression of genes known to regulate fat utilization. Our results show that the fly brain measures fat store levels and can induce changes in food intake and metabolism to maintain them within normal limits. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Viral infections and outbreaks have become a major concern and are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The development of successful antiviral therapeutics and vaccines remains a daunting challenge. The discovery of novel antiviral agents is a public health emergency, and extraordinary efforts are underway globally to identify safe and effective treatments for different viral diseases. Alkaloids are natural phytochemicals known for their biological activities, many of which have been intensively studied for their broad-spectrum of antiviral activities against different DNA and RNA viruses. The purpose of this review was to summarize the evidence supporting the efficacy of the antiviral activity of plant alkaloids at half-maximum effective concentration (EC50) or half-maximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) below 10 μM and describe the molecular sites most often targeted by natural alkaloids acting against different virus families. This review highlights that considering the devastating effects of virus pandemics on humans, plants, and animals, the development of high efficiency and low-toxicity antiviral drugs targeting these viruses need to be developed. Furthermore, it summarizes the current research status of alkaloids as the source of antiviral drug development, their structural characteristics, and antiviral targets. Overall, the influence of alkaloids at the molecular level suggests a high degree of specificity which means they could serve as potent and safe antiviral agents waiting for evaluation and exploitation. Jet velocity is an important parameter affecting the air entrainment rate of plunging liquid jet processes. While the vast majority of researchers have investigated the effect of jet velocity, only a few of them considered the effect of jet length in calculating the jet velocity at impingement point. This study investigates the difference (ΔV) between the jet velocity at the inception of the nozzle (Vj) and the impingement point (VL) for a range of operating conditions. Furthermore, bubble voidage inside the downcomer, another critical parameter in plunging jets, is estimated using three different voidage equations incorporated inside a momentum balance model to predict the two-phase elevation level (HR) inside the downcomer. Results showed that ΔV is significant (VL > Vj), especially at low jet flow rates and high jet lengths. Generally, the momentum balance model predicted the HR well, and its prediction improves with downcomer diameter. Summary: A number of repellent compounds produced by plants elicit a spicy or pungent sensation in mammals . In several cases, this has been found to occur through activation of ion channels in the transient receptor potential (TRP) family . We report that isothiocyanate (ITC), the pungent ingredient of wasabi, is a repellent to the insect Drosophila melanogaster, and that the painless gene, previously known to be required for larval nociception, is required for this avoidance behavior. A painless reporter gene is expressed in gustatory receptor neurons of the labial palpus, tarsus, and wing anterior margin, but not in olfactory receptor neurons, suggesting a gustatory role. Indeed, painless expression overlaps with a variety of gustatory-receptor gene reporters. Some, such as Gr66a, are known to be expressed in neurons that mediate gustatory repulsion . painless mutants are not taste blind; they show normal aversive gustatory behavior with salt and quinine and attractive responses to sugars and capsaicin. The painless gene is an evolutionary homolog of the mammalian “wasabi receptor” TRPA1/ANKTM1 , also thought to be involved in nociception. The rapid assessment and monitoring of native desert plants are essential in restoration and revegetation projects to track the changes in vegetation patterns in terms of vegetation coverage and structure. This work investigated advanced vegetation monitoring methods utilizing UAVs and remote sensing techniques at the Al Abdali protected site in Kuwait. The study examined the effectiveness of using UAV techniques to assess the structure of desert plants. We specifically examined the use of very-high-resolution aerial imagery to estimate the vegetation structure of Rhanterium epapposum (perennial desert shrub), assess the vegetation cover density changes in desert plants after rainfall events, and investigate the relationship between the distribution of perennial shrub structure and vegetation cover density of annual plants. The images were classified using supervised classification techniques (the SVM method) to assess the changes in desert plants after extreme rainfall events. A digital terrain model (DTM) and a digital surface model (DSM) were also generated to estimate the maximum shrub heights. The classified imagery results show that a significant increase in vegetation coverage occurred in the annual plants after rainfall events. The results also show a reasonable correlation between the shrub heights estimated using UAVs and the ground-truth measurements (R2 = 0.66, p < 0.01). The shrub heights were higher in the high-cover-density plots, with coverage >30% and an average height of 77 cm. However, in the medium-cover-density (MD) plots, the coverage was <30%, and the average height was 52 cm. Our study suggests that utilizing UAVs can provide several advantages to critically support future ecological studies and revegetation and restoration programs in desert ecosystems. Confined plunging jets are investigated as potential outfalls for the discharge of desalination brine. Compared to offshore submerged outfalls that rely on momentum to induce mixing, plunging jets released above the water surface utilize both momentum and negative buoyancy. Plunging jets also introduce air into the water column, which can reduce the possibility of hypoxic zones. In contrast to unconfined plunging jets, confined plunging jets include a confining tube, or downcomer, around the jet, which increases the penetration depth of the bubbles and can provide better aeration. However, the presence of this downcomer can hinder mixing with surrounding water. Therefore, laboratory measurements of dilution are reported here and compared to the dilution of unconfined plunging jets. In addition, qualitative observations of bubble penetration depth are also used to discuss aeration potential. For designs that increase the bubble penetration depth as compared to unconfined plunging jets, results show that dilution decreases as the depth of the downcomer is increased. However, it is shown that confined plunging jets can be designed with a short downcomer to provide higher dilution than unconfined jets. Validating remotely sensed sea surface temperature (SST) is a fundamental step in establishing reliable biological/physical models that can be used in different marine applications. Mapping SST using accurate models would assess in understanding critical mechanisms of marine and coastal zones, such as water circulations and biotic activities. This study set out to validate MODIS SSTs with a spatial resolution of 1-km in the Arabian Gulf (24–30° N, 48–57° E) and to assess how well direct comparison of dual matchups and triple collocation analyses perform. For the matchup process, three data sets, MODIS-Aqua, MODIS-Terra, and iQuam, were co-located and extracted for 1-pixel box centered at each actual in situ measurement location with a time difference window restricted to a maximum of ±3 h of the satellite overpass. Over the period July 2002 to May 2020, the MODIS SSTs (N = 3786 triplets) exhibited a slight cool night-time bias compared to iQuam SSTs, with a mean ± SD of −0.36 ± 0.77 °C for Aqua and −0.27 ± 0.83 °C for Terra. Daytime MODIS SST observations (N = 5186 triplets) had a lower negative bias for both Aqua (Bias = −0.052 °C, SD = 0.93 °C) and Terra (Bias = −0.24 °C, SD = 0.90 °C). Using extended triple collocation analysis, the statistical validation of system- and model-based products against in situ-based product indicated the highest ETC-based determination coefficients ( ρ t , X 2   ≥ 0.98) with the lowest error variances ( σ ε 2   ≤ 0.32), whereas direct comparison underestimated the determination coefficients and overestimated the error estimates for all MODIS algorithms. The ETC-based error variances for MODIS Aqua/Terra NLSSTs were 0.25/0.19 and 0.26/0.32 in daytime and night-time, respectively. In addition, MODIS-Aqua was relatively more sensitive to the SST signal than MODIS-Terra at night and vice versa as seen in the unbiased signal-to-noise ratios for all observation types.
