Pharmaceutical processes are assessed critically in order to identify and characterize criteria for rejecting a synthetic route and thus trigger the search for a viable alternative. The synthetic route adopted must be highly innovative, flexible, environmentally safe, cost effective and must give substantial yield and early assessment of process issues will enable the process chemist to make a decision to embark on a search for alternative routes.
