Abstract

CODYRUN is a software for computational aeraulic and thermal simulation in buildings developed by the Laboratory of Building Physics and Systems (L.P.B.S). Numerical simulation codes of artificial lighting have been introduced to extend the tool capacity. These calculation codes are able to predict the amount of light received by any point of a given working plane and from one or more sources installed on the ceiling of the room. The model used for these calculations is original and semi-detailed (simplified). The test case references of the task-3 TC-33 International Commission on Illumination (CIE) were applied to the software to ensure reliability to properly handle this photometric aspect. The article examines the fictional works of first- and second-generation African immigrant writers who have recently emerged as new black voices in multiethnic American literature. International audience; La Réunion Island is a volcanic area located in a tropical climate context. Volcanism has built up a 7 km high cone over the last five million years. For the last two or three million years, magmatic, tectonic and weathering processes have been engaged in a gigantic race to shape the island’s morphologies, with dramatic consequences in terms of landforms such as volcanic peaks (the dormant Piton des Neiges and active Piton de la Fournaise), cliffs or “ramparts”, deep gorges and waterfalls which, together with endemic flora and fauna, helped the central part of La Réunion to be recently recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Yet, induced natural hazards such as volcanic eruptions and landslides remain a threat for the population.

Abstract

International audience; A coupled approach between Meso-NH (Non-Hydrostatic) LES (Large Eddy Simulation) meso/microscale scale atmospheric model and ForeFire area simulator is proposed for predicting fine-scale properties of surface propagating systems. Originally developed for large wildland fire simulation (with or without atmospheric coupling) ForeFire has been extended for the simulation of lava flow with the same numerical methods. Similarities in both problems include the requirement to take into account high-resolution topography for the simulation of front dynamics and the requirement to use atmospheric sub-mesh models in order to quantify surface energy and species fluxes to the atmosphere. To be representative of the phenomenon, typical resolution required for the simulation of a fire front or a lava flow is sub-meter (to have an explicit flame depth or narrow flow width) while atmospheric simulation of a typical domain (several tens of square kilometres) may not be performed at a resolution of finer than 50 meters in a reasonable computational time. Front tracking is performed by means of Lagrangian markers that allow simulating interface dynamics at high spatial resolution, temporal scheme is event based with a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy constant time step calculated for each marker iteration, allowing efficient simulation focused on active flow areas. The Lagrangian front dynamics is used to construct a "time of arrival" high-resolution field that is used to perform local budgets of the different surface fluxes models in a way similar to the level-set method. The two way coupling in a Meso-NH/ForeFire simulation typically involve the surface wind to drive the fire or cool the lava surface, and heat and water vapour fluxes to be injected in the atmosphere at each atmospheric time step. The ForeFire code has been built so that several front velocity function could be easily defined and applied at different locations of the surface (e.g. a fire front velocity model could be different in forest with canopy than in grassland), likewise surface fluxes models (combustion, eruption) can be added and defined in the same way, superposed as surface layers with each layer corresponding to an energy, mass or species flux that will be forced in the atmospheric model. Meso-NH and ForeFire resolutions are independent and the computational time needed by the surface model is a typically a fraction of the atmospheric simulation. Parallel strategy for the surface model mimics the one in the atmosphere model (with Lagrangian markers sent between parallel sub-domains), thus recovering the parallel efficiency of the atmospheric optimized parallel design. High-resolution simulation on a large wildfire experiment shows that coupled simulation does compare with the experiment with a better behaviour and more insight (atmospheric flow) than non-coupled simulations. Simulation of the 2007 eruption of Piton de la Fournaise (La Reunion Island, France), as well as the 2009 3000 Ha Aullène fire (Corsica Island, France) show that computations can be performed at large scale in good accordance with observation in a reasonable computational time.

Abstract

C-INV; International audience; Natural and social systems are the subject of many studies aimed at understanding their characteristic dynamics and functioning. These systems are characterized by a great variety of interaction between their components and by the fact that often, at different levels, collective phenomena give rise to emergent properties. Simulation, that creates an abstraction of a system as it evolve through time, is a particularly appropriate methodology for studying systems that are inaccessible through direct observation and measurement, either because they cannot be reproduced or because they cannot be directly experimented with. Since such systems may be conceptually described in terms of interacting entities endowed with a certain autonomy in a spatial environment, Multi-agent systems simulation have come to the fore in recent times as a relevant modelling approach. I propose to present and discuss lessons learned through several projects modelling projects performed in Reunion Island, a French overseas territory of 2512 square kilometres in the Western Indian Ocean which lead a project on a global scale to achieve energy self-sufficiency by 2030. The Island is perfectly suited to conduct simulation experiments: it is a small multi-ethnic territory with a fast growing population and many geographic constraints, but also many opportunities in sustainable development and requires that any decision should be based on a spatially explicit understanding of complex ecological systems and their interactions with social systems. Two applications in particular will be discussed, one dedicated to the collective management of agricultural biomass and a second to the management on land-use planning driven by the population dynamics and its distribution in the territory.

International audience; This paper focuses on Chris Abani’s Los Angeles novel, The Virgin of Flames (2007) that portrays a tormented artist of Nigerian and Salvadorian descent who falls in love with a Mexican transsexual and wishes to become a woman. Renamed “Black” by his Latina mother and obsessed with his origins and ancestry, the racialized protagonist tries to find his place in multiethnic America and keeps reinventing himself through multiple, ambivalent identities. This on-going rearticulation of ‘self’ and ‘other’ in a diasporic context disrupts the normative constructions of identity through race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Deviance, displacement, difference, and pluralism generate conflicting views and problematic indeterminacies that may be perceived as potentially liberating. We will examine through in-depth textual analysis in what ways and to what purpose Chris Abani exposes the uncertainties of his shape-shifting character. We will study how the novelist – who himself is a biracial and transnational artist – revises the fictional representation of the African Diaspora in the United States. Black’s desperate quest, his constant becoming and sense of ‘unbelonging’ serve to question rigid social categories. Abani addresses timely issues on identity politics and self-identification through a diasporic character that is emblematic of a rapidly changing and globalized world.

International audience; High-altitude clouds, like cirrus, have been identified as one important regulator of the radiance balance of the earth-atmosphere system (Twomey, 1991), and constitute about 30% of the earth's surface cover (Liou, 1986). Through radiation effects, these clouds are likely to modulate climate system on all scales and are important regulators of the radiative balance of the atmosphere despite their optical depth (Liou et al., 2002). Currently, role of cirrus clouds in the regulation of water vapor as well as the vertical transport of water vapor and ice particles in the vicinity of the tropopause is not perfectly known (Corti et al., 2008). The processes involved are debated (Kiemle et al., 2008) and different formation processes could lead to different cloud characteristics that require to be identified before specific statistical analysis (Keckhut et al., 2006). Lidar measurements provide accurate information on the vertical distribution of cirrus and, therefore, are now used to develop highly resolved cirrus database. A first climatology of cirrus clouds at Midlatitude from lidar measurements has shown cirrus clouds were observed in half of the time (~54%) with subvisible cirrus clouds (SVC) events composing ~23% of the occurrence (Goldfarb et al., 2001). However no distinction according the altitude have been investigated although altitude range and vertical extension of cirrus clouds are critical parameters for the radiative balance of the atmosphere. In a more recent study, a statistical multivariate analysis of one year lidar data acquired in south of France have been realized in order to determine distinct classes of cirrus showing three different classes (Keckhut et al. 2006). Similar results according the classification have been observed in this present study based on a climatology constructed over the period 1996-2007 using a high resolution Rayleigh-Mie-Raman lidar. As the database is long enough, the evolution of cirrus clouds occurrence has also been investigated, and showed different evolution for each cirrus cloud class.

Abstract

International audience; The Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas - re-baptised the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - came into being in April of 2005 when Venezuela and Cuba signed the Treaty of Commerce of the People. Under this treaty, Caracas began furnishing discounted hydrocarbons to Havana in exchange for medical services. This political and economic organisation is designed to promote regional cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean. What social conclusions can be drawn about this institution after five years of existence? What is the real impact of this alliance on the people it touches? This article seeks to establish a global overview of the ALBA's initiatives with particular emphasis placed on two humanitarian social policies: 'Operación Milagro (Operation Miracle)', whose objective is to provide surgical operations to people suffering from cataracts and other eye diseases, and the Cuban educational programme 'Yo, si puedo (Yes, I can)' aimed at teaching illiterates to read, not only on the South American continent, but also in other parts of the world as well, including Western Europe.

International audience; A system \\textbackslashmathcal M\ of equivalence relations on a set \E\ is \textbackslashemph\semirigid\ if only the identity and constant functions preserve all members of \\textbackslashmathcal M\. We construct semirigid systems of three equivalence relations. Our construction leads to the examples given by Z\textbackslash'adori in 1983 and to many others and also extends to some infinite cardinalities. As a consequence, we show that on every set of at most continuum cardinality distinct from \2\ and \4\ there exists a semirigid system of three equivalence relations.

Abstract

International audience; A classroom and office building on the French island of La Reunion, near Madagascar, demonstrates that sustainable design saves significant energy while providing a comfortable environment in an idyllic, yet challenging setting. Building orientation, shading, cross ventilation and ceiling fans nearly preclude the need for air conditioning for ENERPOS, resulting in an annual energy use index of 14.4 kWh/m² (4.6 kBtu/ft²). A building-integrated photovoltaic roof produces more energy than the building consumes. Sustainable site strategies include native vegetation to help prevent outside air from heating up before entering the building, and a car park located under the building to increase soil permeability and reduce flooding.

International audience; President of the Cuban Parliament since 1992, and member of the Political Bureau of the Cuban Communist Party, Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada is, after President Raul Castro and First Vice-President Antonio Machado Ventura, third in line in the Cuban government. Professor of philosophy and a career diplomat, Alarcon spent nearly 12 years in the United States as the Cuban ambassador to the United Nations. Over time, he has become a spokesperson for the Havana government. In this long interview, one that lasted nearly two hours, Alarcon did not seek to evade a single question. He comments on the role of Fidel Castro after his retirement from political life and explains the presence of Raul Castro at the center of power. He also speaks about the reform of the Cuban economic and social model as well as the challenges facing the Cuban nation. Alarcon then discusses the question of emigration and Cuban relations with the United States under the Obama administration. He also takes on the thorny question of human rights and political prisoners and does not hesitate to talk about Alan Gross, the American sub-contractor imprisoned in Cuba, as well as the case of the five Cuban agents detained in the United States. Alarcon then turns to the important question of oil deposits in the Gulf of Mexico and the potential consequences of their exploitation. The interview concludes with a discussion of the relationship of Cuba with the Catholic church and the Vatican, the imminent visit to Cuba of Pope Benedict XVI, Cuban relations with the European Union and the new Latin America and finally the future of Cuba after Fidel and Raul Castro.

Abstract

This study provides the first description of hydroid species and communities in Baa Atoll. 22 stations from 0 to 30 meters depth (except one at 50) were visited based on contrasted geomorphology, and 568 benthic specimens collected. Preliminary results provided a provisional list of 115 species, of which 100 are new records for the Maldives Archipelago. The hydroid fauna of Baa Atoll consists of 74% leptothecates and 26% antoathecates, and represents 26 families and 43 genera. Besides the Eudendriidae (7 spp), the most speciose families (>10 spp) were the Aglaopheniidae, Campanulariidae, Halopterididae, Haleciidae and Sertulariidae. Several new species are suspected but additional material and/or more taxonomic studies are required to complete the descriptions. The more common species are documented by underwater and laboratory photographs (29 spp), with a focus on aglaophenids. The species richness was high and well distributed in the varied locations visited. Richness was higher on atoll rim faro than inside the atoll. Richness was also higher on outer slopes and passes than reef flats and inner reefs of rim faro. The absence of Aglaophenia cupressina and of the fire corals Millepora was noticed. Combining records gathered from old literature data and those of this Baa Atoll study, the hydroid species richness in the Maldives reaches 160 spp, which is high like in other Indian Ocean islands.
