There is a large variety of goals instructors have for laboratory courses, with different courses focusing on different subsets of goals. An often implicit, but crucial, goal is to develop students' attitudes, views, and expectations about experimental physics to align with practicing experimental physicists. The assessment of laboratory courses upon this one dimension of learning has been intensively studied in U.S. institutions using the Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey for Experimental Physics (E-CLASS). However, there is no such an instrument available to use in Germany, and the influence of laboratory courses on students views about the nature of experimental physics is still unexplored at German-speaking institutions. Motivated by the lack of an assessment tool to investigate this goal in laboratory courses at German-speaking institutions, we present a translated version of the E-CLASS adapted to the context at German-speaking institutions. We call the German version of the E-CLASS, the GE-CLASS. We describe the translation process and the creation of an automated web-based system for instructors to assess their laboratory courses. We also present first results using GE-CLASS obtained at the University of Potsdam. A first comparison between E-CLASS and GE-CLASS results shows clear differences between University of Potsdam and U.S. students' views and beliefs about experimental physics.

An important contributor to non-exhaust emissions in urban areas is airborne particulate matter originating from brake systems. A well-established way to test such systems in industry is to use inertia dynamometer benches; although they are quite expensive to run. Pin-on-disc tribometers, on the other hand, are relatively cheap to run, but simplify the real system. The literature indicates promising correlations between these two test stands with regard to measured airborne number distribution. Recent studies also show a strong dependency between the airborne number concentration and the disc temperature. However, a direct comparison that also takes into account temperature effects is missing. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to investigate how the transition temperature is affected by the different test scales, under dragging conditions, and the effects on total concentration and size distribution. New and used low-steel pins/pads were tested against cast iron discs/rotors on both the aforementioned test stands, appositely designed for particulate emission studies. A constant normal load and constant rotational velocity were imposed in both test stands. Results show that a transition temperature can always be identified. However, it is influenced by the test scale and the frictional pair status. Nevertheless, emissions are assessed similarly when an equivalent frictional pair status is analysed (e.g. run-in). Further investigations for fully run-in samples on the pin-on-disc should be performed in order to finally assess the possibility of using the tribometers for the initial assessment of different friction materials. The electrical transport properties of graphene doped with gadolinium (Gd) adatoms have been measured. The gate voltage dependence of the conductivity shows that Gd produces n doping of graphene. The charged Gd ions act as scattering centers, lowering the sample mobility for both electrons and holes. The doping efficiency of Gd at 77 K reproduces theoretical predictions (0.7 electron per Gd adatom). On raising the sample temperature to even 150 K, clustering effects are observed and substantially modify the transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to assess ability to identify asynchronies during noninvasive ventilation (NIV) through ventilator waveforms according to experience and interface, and to ascertain the influence of breathing pattern and respiratory drive on sensitivity and prevalence of asynchronies. 35 expert and 35 nonexpert physicians evaluated 40 5-min NIV reports displaying flow-time and airway pressure-time tracings; identified asynchronies were compared with those ascertained by three examiners who evaluated the same reports displaying, additionally, tracings of diaphragm electrical activity. We determined: 1) sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values; 2) the correlation between the double true index (DTI) of each report ( i.e., the ratio between the sum of true positives and true negatives, and the overall breath count) and the corresponding asynchrony index (AI); and 3) the influence of breathing pattern and respiratory drive on both AI and sensitivity. Sensitivities to detect asynchronies were low either according to experience (0.20 (95% CI 0.14-0.29) for expert versus 0.21 (95% CI 0.12-0.30) for nonexpert, p=0.837) or interface (0.28 (95% CI 0.17-0.37) for mask versus 0.10 (95% CI 0.05-0.16) for helmet, p<0.0001). DTI inversely correlated with the AI (r 2 =0.67, p<0.0001). Breathing pattern and respiratory drive did not affect prevalence of asynchronies and sensitivity. Background: Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) is a novel mode of ventilation that has been demonstrated to improve infant-ventilator interaction, compared to the conventional modes in retrospective and short-term studies., Objectives: To prospectively evaluate the physiologic effects of NAVA in comparison with pressure-regulated volume control (PRVC) in two nonrandomized 12-hour periods., Methods: We studied 14 consecutive intubated preterm neonates receiving mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory failure. Peak airway pressure (Pawpeak), diaphragm electrical activity (EAdi), tidal volume (VT), mechanical (RRmec) and neural (RRneu) respiratory rates, neural apneas, and the capillary arterialized blood gases were measured. The RRmec-to-RRneu ratio (MNR) and the asynchrony index were also calculated. The amount of fentanyl administered was recorded., Results: Pawpeak and VT were greater in PRVC (p < 0.01). Blood gases and RRmec were not different between modes, while RRneu and the EAdi swings were greater in NAVA (p = 0.02 and p < 0.001, respectively). MNR and the asynchrony index were remarkably lower in NAVA than in PRVC (p = 0.03 and p < 0.001, respectively). 1,841 neural apneas were observed during PRVC, with none in NAVA. Less fentanyl was administered during NAVA, as opposed to PRVC (p < 0.01)., Conclusions: In acutely ill preterm neonates, NAVA can be safely and efficiently applied for 12 consecutive hours. The electric field applied between the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope and a metallic surface is shown to induce the reversible trans-cis isomerization of single azobenzene derivatives adsorbed on a Au(111) surface. The investigated molecule is symmetrically equipped with four tert-butyl groups, which decouple the azobenzene core from the metallic surface, facilitating the formation of highly ordered islands. Due to the spatial extension of the electric field, it is possible to switch many molecules within the same island simultaneously.

A crucial problem in molecular electronics is the control of the electronic contact between a molecule and its electrodes. As a model system, we investigated the contact between the molecular wire group of a C90H98 (Lander) molecule and the edge of a Cu(111) monatomic step. The reproducible contact and decontact of the wire was obtained by manipulating the Lander with a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The electronic standing wave patterns on the Cu(111) surface serve to monitor the local electronic perturbation caused by the interaction of the wire end with the step edge, giving information on the quality of the contact.
