Seawater Desalination uses hydrophobic membranes. Many techniques have been developed to improve membrane hydrophobicity by depositing particles on the membrane surface. In this study, a nanocomposite membrane utilizing Triethylenetetramine (TETA) is suggested. The membrane incorporates Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) in conjunction with Triethylenetetramine Dihydrochloride (TETA-DH). In water bath, different percentages of TETA-DH films are formed. Electro-spin fabrication of MWCNTs using TETA-DH yields smooth, low-pore membranes. Membranes and their characteristics are identified by contact angle, layer thickness, and conductivity measurements. Membrane performance is examined for heat flux and salt rejection. Compared to commercial membranes, the proposed membrane exhibits superior antifouling and anti-wetting features. The membrane exhibited permeation and rejection ratio of 46 Kg m2 h−1 and 99.99% respectively which is superior as compared with other membranes. The hydrophilic Surface Modifying Macromolecules percentage (LSMM%) is evaluated because it depends on average pore size, hydrophobicity, surface porosity, and shape. The tests demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed membrane for controlling membrane fouling.

9. An unsupervised framework for analysing heterogeneous log-files to identify multi-stage attacks

Cyberattacks have become increasingly advanced and prevalent on a global scale. One of the most detrimental types of cyberattacks is the multi-stage attack, often referred to as an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT), which combines espionage and sabotage, often over long time periods. Detection of these attacks is extremely challenging due to their deceptive approaches. The sequential events of these attacks might appear benign when performed individually or from different sources. Furthermore, existing tools often restrict their attention to single sources or rely on known patterns of behaviour. Thus, there is a need for approaches that employ empirical behaviour analysis to overcome the lack of existing tools and enhance existing multi-layered defence strategies. This research develops a novel framework to identify patterns and correlations be- tween malicious behaviours of multi-stage attacks such as APT. This framework applies unsupervised learning to heterogeneous logs and is therefore called the Unsupervised Analysis for Heterogeneous Log-files (UAHL) framework. This framework investigates multi-origin heterogeneous log files, using machine learning, in three main phases to extract inner-behaviours of log files and construct patterns of those behaviours over the analysed files. Finally, an Action Centre is developed to present sequential behaviours of attacks, utilising a custom visualisation method. In addition, the Action Centre allows administrators to browse and filter attack profiles along with the ability to show similarity rates between those profiles in terms of their contained behaviours. The framework utilises a dynamic method to eliminate the need for manually pre- defining the clustering parameters, requiring a high field knowledge and significantly affecting results. Moreover, to evaluate the framework, we have produced a (publicly available) labelled version of the SotM43 dataset, as well as using another dataset for the evaluation. Our results demonstrate that the framework can (i) efficiently cluster inner-behaviours of security-related logs with high accuracy, (ii) extract patterns of malicious behaviour and correlation between those patterns from real-world data, and (iii) present results in a meaningful format, along with effectively measuring similarities between the attack profiles.

14. English Language Teaching: Historical Overview, Current Issues and Suggestions for Enhancing Speaking Proficiency in EFL Contexts

- Abstract
The history of English Language Teaching (ELT) and learning in English as a Second and Foreign Language (ESL and EFL) contexts has gone through different practices. The role of memorization and repetition of English language structures has always been a dominant teaching attitude. This attitude has revealed unsuccessful results in promoting speaking proficiency among English language learners when communicating in real-world situations beyond the classroom context. Therefore, it is essential to address such practices and shed light on some of the issues that hinder English Language Learners (ELLs) from effectively using English in real-world communicative situations. This review paper focuses on ELT practices that have been unsuccessful in promoting English language learners' speaking proficiency. Additionally, it provides implications for classroom teaching instructions that integrate authentic tasks and materials. Implementing meaningful tasks that represent real-world situations could be a promising solution for enhancing ELLs' language competencies to enable them to transfer the language they learn to real-life situations beyond school settings. Some practical suggestions and recommendations are provided to enhance ELT in EFL contexts.

Childhood is an important period for determining long-term health in life. One of the biggest threats facing children is obesity. Globally, childhood obesity is reaching the level of a serious public health concern. In some countries, rates of obesity have more than doubled in the last two decades. For example, in Saudi Arabia a recent national study of 11,112 children aged from 2-7 years found the prevalence of obesity among Saudi children has almost doubled since 2002. Global literature shows that obesity is a complex issue and that many factors contribute to children becoming overweight. From a review of the Saudi literature, it is clear that no previous study has used observation as a research methodology to explore the factors affecting body weight in Saudi schools and this is the first study completed within the Islamic school context. The aim of this study was to explore factors that affect body weight among boys in three types of school in Saudi Arabia (public, Islamic and private). A case study design and qualitative methods were adopted. Data were generated through observations, interviews with teachers and students, and by analysing documents. Three research committees from Cardiff University and the Saudi Ministry of Education approved the study. The total interviewees numbered 33 students and 18 teachers. The data analysis process was thematic and used inductive techniques, findings across all cases are presented under four major themes. The school’s system and philosophy play a significant role in affecting body weight among Saudi boys in primary schools. This theme includes the teacher’s role, school canteen system, school programmes and the role of the Ministry of Education. For example, in the public and Islamic schools, canteens are important source of income and this directs each school to sell to students what they want regardless of its nutritional value. The school environment, its infrastructure and facilities was the second theme. Unlike the private school, the public and Islamic schools benefited from new, appropriate, designs. Both these two schools have outdoor sports facilities but they are not prepared to maintain and continue physical education lessons in extreme weather conditions. The students’ health behaviours are a further factor affecting body weight among Saudi boys at all types of primary school. This theme includes students’ preferences, society and community. Three factors that exist outside schools can also affect students’ body weight at all types of primary school. These are media, family, and languages. Drawing on these themes, recommendations are made for policy, practice and research.

Today, various applications in different domains increasingly rely on high-performance computing (HPC) to accomplish computations swiftly. Integrating one or more programming models alongside the used programming language enhances system parallelism, thereby improving its performance. However, this integration can introduce runtime errors such as race conditions, deadlocks, or livelocks. Some of these errors may go undetected using conventional testing techniques, necessitating the exploration of additional methods for enhanced reliability. Formal methods, such as temporal logic, can be useful for detecting runtime errors since they have been widely used in real-time systems. Additionally, many software systems must adhere to temporal properties to ensure correct functionality. Temporal logics indeed serve as a formal frame that takes into account the temporal aspect when describing changes in elements or states over time. This paper proposes a temporal-logic-based testing tool utilizing instrumentation techniques designed for a dual-level programming model, namely, Message Passing Interface (MPI) and Open Multi-Processing (OpenMP), integrated with the C++ programming language. After a comprehensive study of temporal logic types, we found and proved that linear temporal logic is well suited as the foundation for our tool. Notably, while the tool is currently in development, our approach is poised to effectively address the highlighted examples of runtime errors by the proposed solution. This paper thoroughly explores various types and operators of temporal logic to inform the design of the testing tool based on temporal properties, aiming for a robust and reliable system. Blind image deblurring aims to recover an output latent image and a blur kernel from a given blurred image. Kernel estimation is a significant step in blind image deblurring and requires a regularization technique to minimize the cost function and the edges of objects to generate a sharp image in a better way. This study proposes a new image regularization technique called Weber's Law Regularization (WLR) based on the Weber law phenomenon. The Weber ratio was used to preserve the edges of small salient objects and to minimize the cost function to obtain a sharp image while minimizing the ringing effect. To validate the WLR, experiments were conducted on benchmark synthetic and real word images and compared with existing state-of-the-art methods. This paper presents a skin cancer classification model that combines a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a nature-inspired feature optimization algorithm. A custom dataset comprising both malignant and benign skin cancer microscopic illustrations is derived from the ISIC dataset of dermoscopic images. Several preprocessing steps are performed on the input pictures, such as histogram equalization, gamma correction, and white balance adjustment, to improve visibility, quality, and make color corrections. Deep feature extraction and pattern recognition are conducted on both enhanced and original dataset images using the pre-trained CNN model EfficientNetB0. As a result of fusing these features, the model can capture rich details from both dataset versions at the same time. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), a nature-inspired feature selection algorithm is applied to perform model optimization by keeping the most relevant features and discarding the unnecessary ones. The optimized feature vector is then used with various SVM classifier kernels for the skin cancer classification task. The maximum achieved accuracy of the proposed model exceeded 98% through CB-SVM while maintaining an excellent prediction speed and reduced training time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Smart home systems (SHS) have become an increasingly important technology in modern life. Apart from safety, security, convenience and entertainment, they offer significant potential benefits for the elderly, disabled and others who cannot live independently. Furthermore, smart homes are environmentally friendly. SHS functionality is based on perceiving residents’ needs and desires, then offering services accordingly. In order to be smart, homes have to be equipped with sensors, actuators and intelligent devices and appliances, as well as connectivity and control mechanisms. A typical SHS comprises heterogeneous services and appliances that are designed by many different developers and which may meet for the first time in the home network. The heterogeneous nature of the systems, in addition to the dynamic environment in which they are deployed, exposes them to undesirable interactions between services, known as Feature Interaction (FI). Another reason for FI is the divergence between the policies, needs and desires of different residents. Proposed approaches to FI detection and resolution should take these different types of interaction into account. Negotiation is an effective mechanism to address FI, as conflicting features can then negotiate with each other to reach a compromise agreement. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop an Agent-Based Negotiation Approach (ABNA) to detect and resolve feature interaction in a SHS. A smart home architecture incorporating the components of the ABNA has been proposed. The backbone of the proposed approach is a hierarchy in which features are organised according to their importance in terms of their functional contribution to the overall service. Thus, features are categorised according to their priority, those which are essential for the service to function having the highest priority. An agent model of the ABNA is proposed and comprehensive definitions of its components are presented. A computational model of the system also has been proposed which is used to explain the behaviour of different components when a proposal to perform a task is raised. To clarify the system requirements and also to aid the design and implementation of its properties, a formal specification of the ABNA is presented using the mathematical notations of Calculus of Context-aware Ambient (CCA), then in order to evaluate the approach a case study is reported, involving two services within the SHS: ventilation and air conditioning. For the purpose of evaluation, the execution environment of CCA is utilised to execute and analyse the ABNA.

This article aims to review the historical development of continuing professional development programmes (CPDPs) for teachers, as well as the policies and objectives of such programmes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) from the inception of these programmes until now. Styles of CPDPs that the Education Training Centres (ETCs) offer are discussed. Moreover, we explore CPDPs in the KSA in terms of their design, implementation, and evaluation. Finally, the article presents various suggestions and recommendations that might contribute to solving and controlling the problems and obstacles that confront such programmes.

This meta-analysis is the first to provide a quantitative synthesis of empirical evaluations of mathematical intervention programs implemented in secondary schools for students with learning disabilities and mathematics difficulties. Included studies used a treatment-control group design. A total of 19 experimental and quasi-experimental studies containing 20 independent samples met study inclusion criteria. Results of a random effects model analysis indicated that mathematical interventions influence mathematics outcomes (g = 0.37, 95% confidence interval [0.18, 0.56]) for students with learning disabilities and mathematics difficulties. In addition, instructional time moderated the relation between mathematics interventions and student learning. Limitations of the study, future directions for research, and implications for practice are discussed.

This thesis examines the effects of Culture, the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), Expectation Confirmation Theory (ECT) and Technology Readiness (TR) on the satisfaction and usage continuance intention of Internet banking customers within the Saudi Arabian context. The aim is to develop and test a new framework for use in determining the factors that affect Internet banking customers’ actual usage behaviours, with a special focus on the role of cognitive processes, and cultural and personal psychological traits. This research uses cross-sectional survey questionnaire methods within a quantitative approach. 261 valid responses were received. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesised relationships within the research model in Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS 20) software. ECT is well established in conventional marketing literature and explains how cognitive beliefs and affects lead to customers’ repurchasing behaviour. It was first adopted for the Information Systems (IS) context and then customised to explain IS continuance intention behaviour. However, previous ECT customisations in the IS context present a significant knowledge gap because technology-based services are sensitive to individuals’ psychological traits, which ECT does not account for. This research integrates psychological traits and culture into the ECT framework to explain customer satisfaction and continuance intentions in the context of Internet banking usage. It combines ECT with the UTAUT in order to expand ECT to include more cognitive beliefs. Then it integrates TR and Culture to account for psychological and sociological traits. The results present a new contribution to the body of knowledge by validating a theoretically backed integration of the above models into one structural model. This model broadens the understanding of the factors that influence IS satisfaction and usage continuance intention. Compared to previous studies, the explanatory power of this model is a major improvement, with an R2 of (0.61) for usage continuance intention.

Android is the most popular operating system of the latest mobile smart devices. With this operating system, many Android applications have been developed and become an essential part of our daily lives. Unfortunately, different kinds of Android malware have also been generated with these applications' endless stream and somehow installed during the API calls, permission granted and extra packages installation and badly affected the system security rules to harm the system. Therefore, it is compulsory to detect and classify the android malware to save the user's privacy to avoid maximum damages. Many research has already been developed on the different techniques related to android malware detection and classification. In this work, we present AMDDLmodel a deep learning technique that consists of a convolutional neural network. This model works based on different parameters, filter sizes, number of epochs, learning rates, and layers to detect and classify the android malware. The Drebin dataset consisting of 215 features was used for this model evaluation. The model shows an accuracy value of 99.92%. The other statistical values are precision, recall, and F1-score. AMDDLmodel introduces innovative deep learning for Android malware detection, enhancing accuracy and practical user security through inventive feature engineering and comprehensive performance evaluation. As the development of high-performance computing (HPC) is growing, exascale computing is on the horizon. Therefore, it is imperative to develop parallel systems, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and programming models, that can effectively utilise the powerful processing resources of exascale computing. A tri-level programming model comprising message passing interface (MPI), compute unified device architecture (CUDA), and open multi-processing (OpenMP) models may significantly enhance the parallelism, performance, productivity, and programmability of the heterogeneous architecture. However, the use of multiple programming models often leads to unexpected errors and behaviours during run-time. It is also difficult to detect such errors in high-level parallel programming languages. Therefore, this present study proposes a parallel hybrid testing tool that employs both static and dynamic testing techniques to address this issue. The proposed tool was designed to identify the run-time errors of C++ and MPI + OpenMP + CUDA systems by analysing the source code during run-time, thereby optimising the testing process and ensuring comprehensive error detection. The proposed tool was able to identify and categorise the run-time errors of tri-level programming models. This highlights the need for a parallel testing tool that is specifically designed for tri-level MPI + OpenMP + CUDA programming models. As contemporary parallel testing tools cannot, at present, be used to test software applications produced using tri-level MPI + OpenMP + CUDA programming models, this present study proposes the architecture of a parallel testing tool to detect run-time errors in tri-level MPI + OpenMP + CUDA programming models. 49. Phenotypic plasticity and population differentiation in Suaeda maritima on a salt marsh

Suaeda maritima (L) Dumort is a polymorphic annual species of the family Chenopodiaceae that in the UK occurs exclusively in coastal salt marshes. The main aim of this study has been to examine the phenotypic variations within and between its populations in the heterogeneous microenvironments of a salt marsh. Detailed field characterizations of the growth, seed production and seed heteromorphism of four Suaeda maritima populations at Stiffkey salt marsh were conducted over three consecutive years, revealing considerable consistent phenotypic variation between populations on the high marsh, high-marsh creek bank, upper low marsh, and low marsh. Field environmental heterogeneity was assessed by taking measurements of sediment salinity, water content, organic content, redox potential, elevation in the tidal frame and annual number of tidal inundations. They demonstrated that different Suaeda maritima populations do indeed experience divergences between their environments that could both affect the phenotypic responses of developing plants and constitute selection pressures for the evolution of genetically differentiated populations. Experiments involving seedling reciprocal transplantation in the field and seedling transplantation to uniform laboratory conditions revealed significant differences among populations in terms of survival, growth and fecundity parameters. Detailed experiments examining the effect of salinity, temperature, light and storage conditions on seed germination and dormancy also revealed seed dimorphism and significant variation in the germination behaviour among populations. Suaeda maritima populations exhibited substantial evidence of genetic differentiation (reflecting the complex heterogeneity in their natural microhabitats) and, therefore, it can be suggested that this differentiation reflects adaptive ability to colonize wider range of habitats along the environmental gradients.
